Oh Christmas tree, how lovely are thy branches round. The fact Chanelle is in the National Guard and sometimes is away for months at a time has nothing to do with the tree. It remains in the couple’s living room because they like it. “My mom always had a real tree that had to be taken down,” Josh said. “But ever since I have been on my own, I have used an artificial tree and have left it up all the time.” Josh said it bothered him to see people harvest real trees that had to be discarded at the end of the Christmas season. When he and Chanelle married they got the white tree because she had always wanted one. When they moved into Josh’s grandfather’s house in Jamestown, the tree was once again put up to stay. “She did not really like the idea of leaving it up at first, but has gotten used to it and now likes it too,” Josh said. “Sometimes, even if it is not Christmas, I place a gift for her under

the tree.” Josh says that some people think he is lazy not to take the tree down, but that is not the case. He admits, however, it is convenient to keep it up. The tree is connected to the light switch near the front door and can be turned on when anyone walks into the house. But the main reason, the Lackeys keep the tree up year round is they just plain like it. “People get nicer at Christmas,” Josh said. “Maybe leaving the tree up can be a reminder of the holiday spirit to people as they pass by. Why not keep the Christmas spirit and everything that the tree represents going all year. “I think from Halloween to Christmas is my favorite time, but I don’t count down the days until it comes like some people. I just enjoy it when it is here.” And as for the Christmas tree in his front room, he continues to enjoy it all

(blue/green) bulb goes out I may replace it with pink. That is my wife’s favorite color.”

CALENDAR/LOCAL

Federal tax refunds delayed The Internal Revenue Service has reminded North Carolina taxpayers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) to plan on a refund delay until Feb.15. A recent federal law change aimed at making it easier for the IRS to detect and prevent refund fraud requires the IRS to hold the refund of any tax return claiming either the EITC or ACTC until Feb. 15. By law, the IRS must hold the entire refund not just the portion related to these credits. As of June 2016, 921,000 working individuals and families in North Carolina received $2.3 billion in EITC alone, putting an average of $2,523

into the pockets of lowincome working individuals and families. Similarly, 663,600 working individuals and families in the s t a t e received a total of $889.64 m i l lion in ACTC, an average of $1,341 per individuals and families. The IRS emphasizes that these are full-year totals for both of these credits and that only those claims filed before Feb. 15 will be affected by the new law. To avoid any further delays on their refunds, the IRS asks North Carolina taxpayers to file their returns as they normally do, not wait to file later in the season. Whether or not claiming the EITC or ACTC, the IRS cautions taxpayers not to count on getting a refund by a certain

date. The IRS issues more than nine out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days, some returns however, are held for further review. The IRS also encourages taxpayers to consider a tax-withholding checkup. By adjusting Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, taxpayers can ensure the right amount is taken out of their pay so that they will not have to pay too much tax or wait until they file their return to get a refund. Taxpayers should submit the revised form to employers, and employers will use the form to figure the amount of federal income tax to be withheld from pay. For help, use the Withholding Calculator on IRS.gov. The IRS has a special page on IRS.gov, https:// www.irs.gov/individuals/ steps-for-tax-filing-season, with steps to take now for the 2017 tax-filing season.

Potter addresses Historic Society By CAROL BROOKS Editor Potter Hal Pugh, of New Salem Pottery in Randleman, spoke to those in attendance at the annual meeting of the Historic Jamestown Society about the potters in the area, 16 of whom were in the Mendenhall family. Pugh and his wife Eleanor Minnock-Pugh produce a variety of original redware and stoneware pottery. They also replicate redware and stoneware pottery from the 16th through the 20th century. The couple researched their property and surrounding area and identified 16 former potteries, but not all have been located.

HAL PUGH The Pugh’s interest in history has enabled them to work as consultants to

archaeologists, historians and set decorators concerning historic ceramic

techniques and processes. Their pottery has been displayed and used by universities, historic sites, the movie industry and living history museums throughout the United States and abroad. Since big box stores were non-existent in the 1700s, settlers had to make their own pottery and utensils or know someone who did. Thus, many small potteries existed in the area. Potteries such as those owned by Beard, Mendenhall, Vestal and Hiatt were known to exist in the Jamestown area from its early settlement. “There were a gang of them,” Pugh said, “and there had to be more than one pottery. “We can trace them all back to the Beards. Their

pottery was across the road from Deep River Meeting. Benjamin Beard had his pottery there.” Beard was one of the first to make salt-glazed pottery in the area. The Pughs were contributors to the 2010 book Ceramics in America, in which they wrote, “In 1794, George (Mendenhall) sent his fifteen-yearold son Richard to Jesse Kersey of Chester County, Pennsylvania, to learn the potter’s trade. “Other workers at Kersey’s pottery included Mendenhall’s second cousin, Jonathan Howell Mendenhall, and Aaron Fraisure.” When Kersey closed his pottery shop, Richard Mendenhall moved to York, Penn., to learn the

tanning business with his brother, Stephen. Jonathan Mendenhall began studying pottery with Thomas Vickers. It has long been believed that a pottery once existed between the Mendenhall Plantation and the original Coffin House on West Main Street. Pottery sherds have been found in the area. “Richard Mendenhall sold a lot to William Lamb in 1842 on the south side of Federal Street (Main Street),” Pugh said. “The deed mentioned a potter’s shop on the property.” Pugh said Jamestown pottery is distinguished by being fired twice. Historic Society celebrates successful year By CAROL BROOKS Editor The Historic Jamestown Society held its annual meeting on Dec. 11 at Jamestown Friends Meeting. President Jane Payne and Mendenhall Homeplace Director Shawn Rogers reported on the many activities during the year. New events included historic talks, the Treasure Sale at Mendenhall Homeplace, participation

in the Jamestown United Methodist Bazaar and the Candlelight Tour of Old Jamestown. “It was extremely successful,” Payne said. “Everyone was really into it. “It took a lot of hard work. It was time-consuming – we made all the ornaments for the children’s tree. We really appreciate Richard and Carol Hay for offering their home.” Payne noted three major challenges needed to continue to promote the history of Jamestown

through the Historic Jamestown Society – money, membership and involvement. She urged participation in the various committees of HJS. Visitors to the Mendenhall Homeplace continue to come not only from the local area, but also from 29 states and nine countries as far away as China, Russia, Norway, Thailand, Spain and Peru. Several large groups, including school groups, also toured the Homeplace during the year. Rogers praised the volunteers for

helping with these tours. More than $23,000 was donated to HJS during the year and Rogers was able to secure grants as well. All the funds go toward preservation of the Homeplace and Jamestown history. Rogers mentioned that several projects, including repair of the plaster in the new parlor and reconstruction of the stone walkway along West Main Street would begin after the first of the year. Repair of the chimney stacks is also on the schedule for 2017.

Officers elected for 2017 are Jane Payne, president; Jane Wade, vice president; Karen Walls, secretary; and Jim Leonard, treasurer. Joining the Board of Directors for 2017-19 are Russell Walker, Tommy Walls, Annie Laura Perdue and Carol Brooks.

Save and spend wisely in 2017

New calendar changes time of celebration Christmas used to be celebrated on Jan. 6. When the British adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752, 11 days were dropped from the month of September to make the time element fit. For Britain and her colonies, this made Christmas day fall on Dec. 25. Some people were slow to accept the change and others chose to celebrate on both days. In traditional Christian churches, Christmas is celebrated as a period of time. It begins with Advent for the four Sundays before

Christmas to prepare for the coming of Jesus, continues with his birth on Dec. 25 and concludes with the revelation of Jesus to the wise men – Epiphany – on Jan. 6. Does your family celebrate Edpiphany? If your family celebrates this special occasion, email Norma, a.s.a.p, at the Jamestown News (james townnews@northstate.net) and tell her what you do. Include contact information in case she needs to get more information.

Did you get carried away with the holiday spirit this past season? On the heels of hefty spending, the New Year is the best time to take stock of personal finance habits and make beneficial changes for the year ahead. Here are some useful tips and tricks to spend and save wisely in 2017. Think Long-Term Don’t neglect the future. It’s never too early to save for retirement. In fact, the sooner you start, the better off you will be. Invest through a company-sponsored plan if possible. If not, look into IRAs that can help you grow your wealth exponentially. Create Categorized Funds Consider the 52-week savings challenge. In the first week, save $1, followed by $2 the second week, all the way through week 52, when you put aside $52. Sticking to this plan results in $1,378 saved at the end of the year, as well as any interest you’ve earned. Creating a savings account for a specific

purpose is a perennially sound savings strategy. Look for banks that are fee friendly, such as Ally Bank Member FDIC, ally. com, which allows you to open an Online Savings or Money Market account with no minimum and no monthly maintenance fee. You can deposit money easily through e-check deposit, direct deposit and you’ll earn interest compounded daily on your savings. In addition, putting this money in a separate account allows you to track your spending against the account balance. Use Shopping Apps It is incredibly easy to save money with a little online research. With a few minutes effort, you’ll find discount codes, loyalty programs or cashback websites that track your purchases and reward you for the extra step of navigating through their shopping portal instead of going straight to the big name retailers’ websites. Reap Rewards While no personal finance expert would advo-

cate running up credit card bills one can’t afford, savvy consumers know how to take advantage of credit card reward programs for hotel points, airline miles or just straight cash in their pockets. “Use credit cards that reward you for the things you buy the most,” says Diane Morais, chief executive officer and president of Ally Bank, the direct banking subsidiary of Ally Financial Inc. There are often offers for opening a new credit card with a minimum spend, such as the Ally CashBack Credit Card, which provides a $100 bonus when you make $500 in eligible

purchases during the first three billing cycles, and offers 2 percent cash back at gas stations and grocery stores, and 1 percent cash back on all other purchases – as well as 10 percent bonus on rewards that are deposited into an eligible Ally Bank account. If you don’t want to open a new account, check your current credit cards for promotions or cash back offers, which can add up quickly on everyday purchases. With a little homework, savvy consumers can make 2017 the year they spend strategically and save more. (StatePoint)

Interim’s salary, planner hiring discussion continues Editor, After Carrie Spencer resigned and before Chuck Smith was terminated, the Town had advertised for a Town Planner position at a starting salary of $44,417. But when Matthew Johnson became interested in his old job, the Interim Town Manager Cookie Billings changed the position to a different class and a different position called a Planning Director not just plain old Town Planner. From the approved minutes of the Sept. 20 meeting: “She (Cookie) had a meeting with Matt Reese, Council of Government. He reviewed the job description and came back with a recommendation. With the increased responsibilities and duties and grant expectation, he recommended we change the class from a 17 to 20 on our Assignment of Grades to Classes assignment. She recommended adjustment for approval.” The Council voted unanimously to change the classification. Changing in classes is normally done at budget time. Matt Reese didn’t use the definition that the American Planning Association defines a “Planning Director” at

https://www.planning. org/onthejob/descriptions/ director.htm. The definition has nothing to do with increased responsibility. “The Minimum Qualification: This position level requires a master’s degree in urban planning, public administration or a related field and a minimum of 8 years of progressive responsible planning experience. Generally, four years of experience must be in a supervisory capacity. AICP Certification is required, or ability to obtain certification within one year. Preference may be given to applicants possessing qualifications above the minimum.” In Jamestown, the Planning Department has only one employee. Matthew Johnson is not a Planning Director because he doesn’t supervise any people. One council member told me that the Council unanimously instructed Cookie not to fill the Town Planner position and to wait until the new Town Manager is on board. She ignored that suggestion and rehired Matthew Johnson anyway, the most disliked person in Jamestown due

So, have you got something about reading more books on your list of New Year’s resolutions? If so, I have some help. Four different books, at least one of which will be right for you. A bestselling inspirational cookbook-memoir by North Carolina’s most celebrated woman these days. A novel set in contemporary times about a half-human, halfbull creature who tries to make his way as a bluecollar worker. A look back at the racial turmoil of the 1960s through the poignant experience of one of North Carolina’s greatest basketball stars, and a literary novel about a troubled marriage that becomes a mur-

der mystery. These books will be featured in January on the new season of UNC-TV’s North Carolina Bookwatch. Public television’s popular program, “A Chef’s Life,” has made North Carolinian Vivian Howard a national figure. Now, her photograph on the lovely cover of her book, Deep Run Roots: Stories and Recipes from My Corner of the South, is on prominent display in bookstores everywhere. Howard organized her book in a new way. Not by collections of similar dishes like salads, appetizers, main dishes and desserts, but by foods, the raw ingredients. She gives chapters

to lots of reasons, some not following the N.C. General Statutes. Johnson was hired at a salary of $75,000, an increase of 69 percent over what the Town was planning to hire a new Town Planner at $44,417. Buddy Mann Jamestown

Editor, After reading the Dec. 28 paper, my jaw hit the floor when it was disclosed that not only was Cookie Billings making $16,500 a month with full benefits but she is also only required to work 30 hours a week! Seriously? Now we find that the Council has voted to extend her stay through August of 2017?? I now have genuine concerns as to the actual integrity of our Council. I’m not surprised that Lawrence Straughn made the motion to extend the time frame based on what has previously been written in this paper. But now that just means that everyone’s hands are equally soiled. I would have thought that the point to a town the size of Jamestown paying $66,000 for four months’ work in an interim capacity

was that they were going to help find their permanent replacement? I would assume that would be their primary responsibility? But over the past four months what have we seen? 1) The council voting to let her spend an additional $8,000 to have an outside agency assist in finding the permanent Town Manager. Which now puts us at $74,000 spent this year including what Cookie is being paid. 2) Very little “detailed” discussion in the town records or the newspaper about how things are going in finding someone, except that it is “in progress.” Under the questionable circumstances of the previous dismissal, I would have hoped for a more transparent process. 3) Numerous pictorial opportunities in the paper and online with Cookie attending various Jamestown events. None of those events had anything to do with finding a permanent replacement, mind you. But it does look like she’s had numerous good times as interim. I bet that if we had heard from her as much about efforts to find a town manager as we have about her efforts

at the golf course we’d be farther along in the process? Maybe? Maybe if our Town Council was maintaining some semblance of visible accountability I would have felt more assured. 4) She went and rehired the Town Planner that she originally hired years ago. Funny thing about that is I did not see a posting for that position either. Would the town have benefitted by a new mind with fresh ideas from an unknown by way of a vetting process? I guess we will never know that answer either, will we? Now we are told that the Council is giving her an additional eight months to find someone permanent. How motivated is she going to be to find that replacement now? I would have hoped that for the money being paid out that it would have been clear and time bound that Cookie’s No. 1 priority was to fill that position by the end of the year. But we now see the results we have gotten. Finally, I noticed that it has not been disclosed how much Cookie will be making yet. All public positions are supposed to have their incomes listed as a part of the public record. Just

Steven Sherrill’s The Minotaur Takes His Own Sweet Time tells how a fictional Greek legendary half-bull, half-man called the Minotaur adapts to life in a modern white workingclass community. Somehow Sherrill makes the reader set aside disbelief, overlook the Minotaur’s bullhorns, funny looking face and tortured way of speaking. Once that is done, Sherrill’s story of the Minotaur’s struggles to find a place in the human world is moving and compelling. In his new book, veteran sports journalist Art Chansky uses the experiences of UNC-Chapel Hill legendary basketball hero Charlie Scott to view the racial revolution of the 1960s. Game Changers: Dean Smith, Charlie Scott, and the Era That Transformed a Southern College Town” explains how Scott, the Tar Heels’

first African-American scholarship basketball player, could be a hero on the court and a lonely outsider on the Carolina campus. Although the racial climate in Chapel Hill was gradually improving, Scott never felt comfortably at home off the court. Still, his great playing ability earned him thousands of fans. Their admiration of Scott’s basketball talents helped many of them put aside their strict segregationist views. UNC-Wilmington writing teacher Nina de Gramont is an admired writer of literary fiction. Her fans may be surprised that she begins her latest book, The Last September, with a murder. A young wife, Brett, finds the body of her blood-drenched husband, Charlie, with his head bashed in and his throat slit. Brett becomes a suspect. A more likely murderer is her husband’s seriously men-

Coming home

Capra takes advantage of job position at his hometown bank By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer For Tony Capra, a move up the career ladder in banking meant coming home. He was recently named manager at Wells Fargo in Jamestown and has been at the bank about eight weeks. Having been raised in Jamestown, Capra graduated from Ragsdale High School and High Point College where he majored in business and minored in furniture marketing. After working for AT&T and MCI for a while he spent 10 years working in the furniture industry. “I always cashed my checks at Wells Fargo, where I had banked with my family since I was young,” Capra said. “Whenever Joe Jackson (bank manager at the time) saw me he always asked, ‘How’s the furniture business?’ One day, I finally told him it was not too good.” Jackson asked him for a few minutes of his time and told Capra he would do well in banking. Ready for a change in careers, Capra applied for a position with

Wells Fargo and six weeks later was hired as a banker in Winston-Salem. From there he went to Charlotte for four years. “I missed Jamestown and always said if I ever moved it would be back there,” he said. “I came home (to the Jamestown area) at least twice a month to see family.” Capra has twin sons who live in Greensboro and Winston-Salem. His mother continues to run the family business, Capra’s Deli. The deli was located on Greensboro Road for years before moving to a location on Hwy. 68 in High Point. “Ever since I was a kid, my family said, ‘Don’t get in trouble, your name is on the sign,’” Capra said with a smile. Of course, Capra wanted to make his family proud. But since going into banking, he also wanted to justify the confidence Jackson had placed in him by recommending him for the job. “I would not be here if it wasn’t for Joe Jackson,” he said. “You don’t want to disappoint the person who referred you.” The position of man-

ager at the Jamestown Wells Fargo seemed made to order for Capra and he feels fortunate to have gotten that job. “I am now manager where I used to bank and where Joe grabbed me,” he said. “You don’t know what you have till you move away. It is nice to be involved with my old community. There is a connection here with the deli, Wells Fargo and where I lived. I walk through the neighborhoods in town for exercise and soak it all in. To come back to the town where you grew up hits your heart. “I saw someone at the grocery store recently who pointed to me and told someone else, ‘That’s my banker.’ It brought a smile to my face. I continue to meet people from my past at work and that is a nice advantage.” Capra feels his job as bank manager is to make sure the bank operates effectively and efficiently and that customers get excellent service. He wants to continue to bring that hometown feel to the bank by building relationships with customers. “When you get to know your customers they feel comfortable with you and you can understand what their needs are – whether it

I want us to be the one bank that provides excellent service for all their needs. “Building trust with customers is my responsibility,” Capra added. “I want customers to feel like this is their ‘home’ where they keep their money and do their financing.” While riding around looking for a place to live

in Jamestown, Capra saw a for-sale sign in one yard and arranged to see the house. “I knew immediately when I walked in that it was the house for me,” he said. “I later found out that my next-door neighbors had been my neighbors when I was growing up. “When I moved in the past, I always saved the boxes, folded them and put them away. But when I

moved here I threw away the boxes. Even when I lived in Charlotte, I never changed my doctor or dentist or the person who cut my hair. I knew deep down in my heart I would come back.”

Top seven must-see sky events for 2017 Get ready to see an amazing eclipse, a comet encounter, close planetary pairings and more celestial wonders By Andrew Fazekas Among the many eyecatching astronomical shows coming up, 2017 may be best remembered for the much anticipated total eclipse of the sun that will cross the continental United States in August. In addition to that spectacular sight, sky-watchers will have a plethora of treats to look forward to in the coming months. To kick things off, an icy comet will swing by Earth in February, hopefully offering picturesque views. Elusive Mercury and giant Jupiter will both put their best faces forward as they appear their biggest and brightest early in the year. And in December, the annual Geminid meteor shower will put on an especially brilliant display. Meteor Showers 101 Meteor showers bring interplanetary debris, ranging from pebbles to boul-

ders, into Earth’s atmosphere. Find out how these dazzling displays come about. Here’s a rundown of these and other superb skywatching events worth circling on your calendar in 2017. • Feb. 11 – Comet 45 P/ HMP In the first half of February, sky-watchers may get a chance to see a comet swing by Earth. After rounding the sun in December 2016, Comet 45P/Honda-MrkosPajdusakova will be heading back to the outer solar system. On its journey it will make an appearance in our dawn skies, seeming to zip across the constellations Aquila and Hercules. On Feb. 11, it will reach its closest point to Earth at only 7.7 million miles. This should be the best time to catch sight of this icy visitor, since its brightness may reach naked-eye lev-

Stay tuned for a detailed viewer’s guide in February. • Feb. 26 – Annular Eclipse Lucky sky-watchers along a narrow path in the Southern Hemisphere will get to see a “ring of fire” eclipse of the sun. Also known as an annular solar eclipse, this stunning event

occurs when the moon’s disk is too small to cover the entire sun, and it leaves a ring of sunshine around the dark lunar silhouette. The eclipse path starts over the South Pacific Ocean, crosses South America and ends in Africa. North and south of this pathway, a much larger region of the world will be able to witness a partial solar eclipse. • March 29 – Mercury, Mars, Moon The crescent moon will make a neat triangle with two planets in March. After sunset, stargazers should look toward the western sky to see the thin crescent moon forming an impressive celestial triangle with Mercury to its lower right and ruddy Mars above the pair. What makes this event worth watching for, beyond the lovely display, is that the formation will help viewers see Mercury at its brightest and highest in our skies. The innermost planet is normally very hard to spot, since the tiny world usually gets lost in the glare of the sun. But at the end of March, it will reach its most distant point from the sun as seen from Earth, and so will be easier to catch. • April 10 – Moon meets Jupiter Jupiter and the moon will make an especially close pairing in April.

Brilliant Jupiter will be paired with Spica, the lead star of the constellation Virgo, all year long. But April will be extraspecial, as the largest planet in the solar system will also pair up with the full moon. On this night, both objects will rise together in the east moments after the sun sets in the west. And if you think that Jupiter looks even brighter than normal during this event, that’s because it will have reached opposition just three weeks before, when the planet is the biggest and brightest in our skies for all of 2017. • Aug. 21 – Total Solar Eclipse This year will be especially stunning for viewers in North America, as the sun will undergo the most amazing celestial disappearing act seen there since 1979. In August, a total solar eclipse will cross the United States from coast to coast, changing daytime skies into dark twilight for a few minutes along a narrow path from Oregon to South Carolina. Totality will touch many cities, and expectations are that most of the U.S. population will be within a day’s drive of places to see this dramatic event. A partial eclipse—where the moon seems to take only a bite out of the sun—will be visible over a much wider

area across the entire continent. Miss this one and you’ll have to wait until 2024 for the next total solar eclipse to grace North American skies. Stay tuned for detailed eclipse coverage in the months leading up to this grand August sky event. • Nov. 13 – Venus joins Jupiter The bright planets Venus and Jupiter will be exceptionally close in our skies in November. Two of the brightest celestial objects in our skies will have a superclose encounter at dawn on Nov. 13. Neighboring planets Venus and Jupiter will have a spectacularly close conjunction very low in the eastern sky. The two worlds will appear to be separated by only 18 arcminutes, or about equal to the apparent width of a half-lit moon. Since this conjunction event will take place so low to the horizon, the planets will be battling the glare of the morning twilight, and binoculars will make viewing more enjoyable. • Dec. 13 – Geminid meteors The annual Geminid meteor shower will reach its peak activity this night for viewers in the Americas. The Geminids are known to be quite prolific, with rates as high as 60 to 120 shooting stars an hour at peak times. This year’s event will be special because sky-watchers will only have to contend with the waning crescent moon until about local midnight. Once the moon sets, the best viewing will be in the predawn hours of Dec. 14 – exactly when the shower is predicted to reach its peak performance. Clear skies!

Our patrons are so generous. Many have purchased books from our Wish Tree, to donate back to our library. They are in honor of or in memory of loved ones, family members or colleagues. Let’s look at a sampling of new items ready for adults to check out. Hidden Figures is the true story of Black female mathematicians who worked for NASA. John Glenn’s recent death emphasized their worth, with some of his quotes showing his faith in these women. They were called human calculators. They used pencils, slide rules and adding machines to calculate the numbers it would take to launch rockets and to put a man in orbit. A new movie with the same story has just been released. Read the book, then see the movie. American Heiress is the true story of the kidnapping and brainwashing of Patricia Hearst. This book chronicles her participation in the SLA and the crimes she committed with them. Her trial, prison sentence and eventual pardon are also explored. Now she’s just a millionaire society mom who raises show dogs. Frontier Grit is anoth-

er nonfiction book about famous women from the pioneer days. An Oregon Trail suffragette, the first Mexican-American author, a frontier doctor, the first female senator and a celebrated stagecoach driver are just a few of the fascinating women profiled. From the California gold rush to the Hawaiian Islands to the Dakota Sioux people, this book has exciting stories to tell. Not all of our new adult books are nonfiction. We have some dynamite novels from famous authors too. Janet Evanovich brought back Stephanie Plum, girl bounty hunter with the hots for two guys, for Turbo Twenty-Three. James Patterson’s Alex Cross must solve the murder of his boss, the chief of detectives, in Cross the Line. No Man’s Land is David Baldacci’s latest. Special Agent John Puller keeps us in suspense when he is tasked with examining his own mother’s disappearance 30 years earlier. Everything We Keep, by Kerry Lonsdale, is a different sort of novel. A young woman is all set to marry her childhood sweetheart when he disappears in a boating accident. Her wedding day becomes his funeral day. This kind of novel is called romantic suspense because secrets emerge as she struggles to

Winter is here. There may be snow on the ground and there is colder weather with lots of soups and stews. Then, of course, there are stuffed-up noses. It all sounds great until you’re blowing your nose every two seconds and your throat could pass for sandpaper. And if all that isn’t enough, your lungs have to fight the losing battle of a cough so aggressive you feel as though the wind is constantly being knocked out of you. Sometimes these are just symptoms of a small cold, but other times they could be the flu (and you’ll be able to tell since the flu symptoms are nearly 10 times harsher than a simple cold). But let’s look at some home remedies for these health violators before resorting to chugging a bottle of DayQuil. We all know that vitamin C is a good thing to keep in your system when fighting a cold. You can make sure of that by taking your daily vitamins and maybe increasing the dosage of vitamin C for the duration of the cold or flu. A great herb to help combat your cold is Echinacea. Echinacea is a notable immune system booster and will also help take up arms against the germs with your white blood cells

to help insure a victory. There are also some very standard steps to taking care of yourself that I think we often neglect and opt to buy medicine instead. According to WebMD you must: blow your nose, rest, gargle and shower. You have to blow your nose regularly because half the time we’ll only blow our noses when we can no longer breathe out of them, but try to do it a couple times an hour to keep that mucus out of your system. Stay rested because your body won’t have enough energy to keep to your regular routine while fighting off a sickness. I once got over a cold by simply spending an entire day in bed, drinking tons of water and sleeping a lot instead of pushing myself. Believe me it works. Next time you feel a cold coming, get the upper hand and try all the above. And I’ll leave you with one last little tip. If you have a sore throat that is distractingly painful and you lose your voice, I would recommend an herbal throat coat. Traditional medicinal tea makes a great throat coat. Steep it and throw in some honey, you’ll feel noticeably better right away. It’s my quick fix if I need immediate relief. I wish you all a natural victory in this upcoming war on colds. And here’s a recipe that

will cure whatever is ailing you.

Winter Squash Soup Ingredients 1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 3/4 cup chopped onion 3 cups peeled and cubed winter squash 2 cups low sodium chicken broth (for more health benefits, use bone broth) 1/2 teaspoon thyme 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 pound low fat cream cheese, cubed Salt and pepper to taste Cooking instructions Heat the oil and butter together in a large saucepan over medium-high heat and saute the onion till translucent. Add squash, broth, thyme and cayenne pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 20 minutes, or until squash is tender. In a blender, puree squash mixture with the cream cheese (in batches) until smooth; return to the saucepan and heat through, but don’t boil. Salt and pepper to taste and serve. New course aims to meet changing needs of healthcare By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer The world of medicine is constantly changing as research finds new treatment options and technology provides better ways to administer therapies and monitor conditions. Guilford Technical Community College is again on the forefront of training professionals to meet the demands of today’s healthcare. This spring semester, GTCC is offering a new course for cardiac monitor technicians. Cardiac monitor technicians, also known as telemetry technicians, monitor heart activity and interpret heart rhythms of multiple patients from a central observation center, sometimes covering multiple acute care locations. Although they seldom, if ever, interact directly with patients, they are critical members of the healthcare team. “The face of healthcare is incredibly dynamic; it’s always changing,” said Warren Crow, RN, BSN, director of health careers and nursing assistant training program at GTCC. “Acute care hospitals are

One of those areas that has evolved is how we are using telemetry.” Although cardiac monitoring is a significant tool, hospitals are finding that unit nurses are so busy with individual patient care they have little time to study the

readings unless an alarm sounds. Also, the computers are designed to chart patterns over a specific period of time and cannot pick up subtleties. “It requires an astute person who can watch the heart rhythms and go ‘Wait, this was different from an hour ago. I haven’t seen this pattern. I’ve only seen it in short bursts.’ And at this point the computer has not

If I can interact with those rhythm changes early with intervention, my ability to prevent even the smallest amount of further cardiac damage is huge.” According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for cardiac monitor technicians is projected to grow by 22 percent from 2014 to 2024. already have or are in the process of adopting this type of telemetry program, GTCC developed this new course to meet the needs of this growing field. The class begins Jan. 9 and includes fundamentals of anatomy and physiology of the heart and cardiovascular system, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical legal ethics, communication

with other healthcare team members, and intensive monitor interpretations. Additionally, students will spend 24 hours training in a clinical environment with cardiac monitor technicians. Crow said experience in healthcare is recommended, but not required. The first students will graduate in February. “We’re not going to make the students diagnosticians,” he said, “but we want them to be astute in pattern recognition and understand the dialect of medicine. Communication with the nurse on the unit is critical, but at the same time has to be supportive of that nurse who may be so overwhelmed. “I think it is a very challenging job. This is like no other job you will ever have.”
