Town Council to discuss town manager position By CAROL BROOKS Editor The Jamestown Town Council will meet with the Piedmont Triad Regional Council in a special meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 4 p.m. to discuss the desired candidate profile and search process for a new town manager. The Town has contracted with PTRC to do the candidate search as well as for planning assistance during the search for a new planning director. The meeting is open to the public, but visitors will not be able to comment. Town Clerk Martha Wolfe said that comments could be made, however, at the regular council meeting, which follows at 6:30 p.m. At that meeting, the Council will hold a public hearing to consider an amendment to the permitted use table of the Land Development Ordinance to include banquet hall/special events facility. The amendment was approved by the Planning Board in October. The amendment is the result of a request from an event planner who is looking to open a banquet hall/special events cen-

ter in Jamestown. Previously, those types of facilities were not permitted within the town’s limits. A banquet or special events facility is defined as one rented by individuals or groups for private functions such as a ceremony, celebration, reception or similar activity. The Council also will consider adoption of a resolution directing Town Clerk Martha Wolfe to investigate a petition the town received regarding Koury Corp’s multifamily development. No further information about the petition was available at press time. This item was postponed from the October meeting. Interim Town Manager Cookie Billings will offer an update to the town’s new Jamestown Park Clubhouse Facility Use Guide adopted in August. Billings also will present a possible change in designation of funds for the Jamestown Public Library. Both Town Council meetings will be held in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Candlelight tour of historic homes offered to community By CAROL BROOKS Editor Ring in the holidays as you take a tour of three historic Jamestown structures at the inaugural “Candlelight Christmas Tour of Old Jamestown.” The event, presented by the Historic Jamestown Society, will be held Dec. 8, from 4:30-7 p.m. Included are the candlelit Richard Mendenhall house (c. 1811), Coffin-Robbins House (c. 1812) and Madison Lindsay House (c. 1814) where cider and cookies await visitors. “Over the past few years, we have had inquiries about Christmas programs or celebrations at Mendenhall Homeplace,” said Shirley Haworth, one of the organizers. “The reaction is always the same: ‘No, there haven’t been any special Christmas programs for many years now.’” Although not the first Christmas tour offered by HJS, this is the first candlelight tour. “Carol and Richard Hay have generously offered to add their lovely home (Coffin-Robbins) to the tour,” Haworth said. “These three homes have been part of the Jamestown scene since very early days. About 25 owners of property along Arnold J. Koonce City Lake – most of them Jamestown residents – attended the Nov. 3. meeting regarding regulations for the lakefront. The Jamestown owners’ property does not extend to the lakefront, rather it ends several hundred feet from the water. Restrictions are in place as to what the residents are allowed to do with those hundreds of feet, which are owned by the City of High Point. “It was a good meeting,” said Jon Cage, one of the property owners. “Overall, the tone of the meeting was very cordial and the officials appeared to want the homeowners’ input.” Cage said several major concerns were raised by the homeowners. Many were not in favor of proposed

signage indicating the city’s property line. “(These) could be unsightly and defeat the purpose of having a pristine lake that protects the natural beauty,” Cage said. The owners appeared to agree that protecting the lake is critical, something the city also stands behind. However, they believed some regulations were unnecessary. One example was the regulation that homeowners are not allowed to go to the edge of the lake to remove trash that has accumulated. Cage said common sense should prevail to let homeowners do the cleanup. City officials in attendance, however, expressed concern that High Point would be open to lawsuits if someone got hurt in the cleanup process. “Homeowners were concerned about the city potentially coming in and planting trees that could obstruct

the view of the lake,” Cage said. “Where there is erosion and real problems with portions of the shoreline, that may make sense but to plant trees unnecessarily and obstruct the lake view that many homeowners paid good money to enjoy should be discouraged.” Officials assured the property owners that this could not happen unless there were erosion issues. No decisions were made at the workshop meeting. Officials agreed to notify residents along the lake when the City Council plans to vote on the regulations. High Point will hold a separate meeting in the future for residents along Oak Hollow Lake.

Parking is available at the Mendenhall Homeplace and at designated areas across the street. Since there are no paved walkways at the Homeplace, sensible shoes are in order for those who tour. Admission is $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the Mendenhall Home-

On Nov. 10, the United States Marine Corps will celebrate its 241st birthday. In 1775, the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that “two Battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Today, there are more than 200,000 active-duty and reserve Marines, organized into three divisions stationed at Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton and Okinawa, Japan. Each

division has one or more expeditionary units, ready to launch major operations anywhere on short notice. Marines expeditionary units are self-sufficient, with their own tanks, artillery and air forces. The motto of the service is “Semper Fidelis,” meaning “Always Faithful” in Latin. Every year on Nov. 10, Marines receive emails, calls and Facebook messages wishing them a happy birthday. There are times throughout the year when Americans remember and honor its fallen comrades on Memorial Day or celebrate veterans on Veterans

Day. However, the Marine Corps birthday is a time where Marines focus on their brothers in arms, remembering the good and staring off into the distance as sorrow washes over them for all their fellow Devil Dogs who gave their lives for our freedom.

Veterans’ Day closing

The Town Hall will be closed Nov. 11. Due to the Veterans’ Day holiday, there will be no garbage pick up that day.

Corresponding with loved ones during times of war By CAROL BROOKS Editor It was a warm night in June of 1944 in High Point. Irene Brooks sat alone in the new home she and her husband had built. Jim was in the Army, at age 31, one of the last of his friends to be drafted. Due to regulations, he couldn’t tell her details about where he was stationed. But she knew. Irene pulled out Jim’s latest letter, dated a few weeks prior – but with a Miami APO address. It was full of the mundane life of a soldier in the Quartermaster Corps. Irene used a calendar to keep track of Jim’s locations, promotions and other notes about his service. On May 10, 1944, she wrote, “first letters from Jim in North Africa,” and on the 24th, “5 letters from Jim today. He must be in the Gold Coast of Africa.” She also pulled out her copy of a book, The Sun is My Undoing, by Marguerite Steen. The book, published in 1941, told

about the slave trade in several parts of the world, including the Gold Coast of Africa (now Ghana). The book also went into detail about the landscape and living conditions of the area – the area where Jim was stationed. Reading the book, perhaps she could feel like she was there with him. Irene and Jim were my parents. My father, James Brooks, served in the Quartermaster Corps of the Army in World War II, rising in grade to TSgt. While I don’t remember asking him to tell me about it, I do have the scrapbooks my mother made of the photos and letters he sent home from Fort Bragg, in North Carolina, Camp Lee in Virginia and several locations in Africa, where he was stationed for about 20 months. I always thought that Dad was not allowed to tell his location, for fear the enemy would intercept and learn valuable information. The War Department issued pamphlet No. 21-1 on July 29, 1943, titled, “When You Are Overseas – These Facts Are Vital,”

Mystery and WWII history interweave in Outer Banks book By CAROL BROOKS Editor In Chicago in 1940, German immigrant Nicholas Wolf decides to return to fight for his fatherland. During his journey back, he writes letters home to his wife Marlena until the letters suddenly stop coming. But did he really join the German army? In 1942 Marlena received a telegram from the United States government saying Wolf had died serving America as a Merchant Marine sailor. Stranger still, records were found in 1947 stating Wolf had been killed in action – as a German infantryman. “But then came even stranger news,” author Philip Gerard writes in The Dark of the Island. “According to the German records, he had died aboard a U-boat when it was sunk by an American bomber off the coast of North Carolina, at a place called Hatteras Island. No bodies were ever recovered.”

So begins Gerard’s story and how Wolf’s grandson, also named Nicholas, arrives on the Outer Banks island of Hatteras for a job and discovers the true story. He meets the residents of the tight-knit community, several of whom served in World War II. Their stories – and the truth about Wolf’s grandfather – are revealed through flashbacks. Although the book is fiction, the story of German U-boat submarine attacks on the coast during World War II is fact. The U-boats sunk many freighters and

several U-boats also were sunk, adding to the debris in the so-called “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Controversial offshore drilling – young Wolf’s reason for being on Hatteras – is also a story line. The book has received praise across the literary world. Author Wiley Cash sums up the book: “Philip Gerard’s The Dark of the Island combines the heft of a historical novel with the propulsive power of a literary thriller. This novel is one of those rare wonders of the book world; it’s a fast-paced story that resonates deeply. Readers will tear through this novel, but they’ll ponder its historical and environmental implications long after the last page is turned.” Gerard is no stranger to historical research. He is the author of the Civil War series of articles which ran from 2011-2015 in Our State magazine. He is currently a creative writing professor at UNC-Wilmington. The Dark of the Island is his second book set

on Hatteras Island, following Hatteras Light in 1986. The Dark of the Island

was published earlier this year by John F. Blair Publisher in Winston-Salem. It

is available from the publisher and on Amazon.

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Whose America will it be?

As I place these words to paper, the outcome of the 2016 presidential election is yet to be decided. I would like to join the throngs of those saying the rhetoric has made this one of the worst election seasons in history, but as a student of history, I know many before have been as bad or worse, they just were not in our lives. I will say this, it has been one of the worst that I have seen but the greatest difference is the violence that has been carried out by individuals who chose to attack persons, steal or vandalize property because they expressed a different preference in the race. Assuming that the votes are in and tallied and a winner of the popular vote declared, after the electoral college meets next month to finalize our process,

by guest columnist Randall Franks then there will be a new president-elect who will take office in January. It is time now for our country to come together and heal from the political turmoil of the last 18 months. Whomever is the victor, whomever is the loser, ultimately what

is important is we are Americans. We are all Americans and as that, we should rise to a higher standard and treat one another with the respect that our forefathers and mothers would expect. Generations struggled, fought and died so that we may enjoy the fruits of their labor and sacrifice and build upon their shoulders. We owe them and ourselves the effort of reaching for the stars and walking a path to make our country a place where we see each other through the eyes of understanding. We should be able, no matter where our hometown is, to walk down our streets safely, enjoy the opportunities to pursue our dreams, whether that means, raising a family, working a job or running a business, possibly providing jobs for others.

We are Americans, in the wake of this election that is what we are first, no political ideology should have precedence over who we are because that one element is what has provided the strength that has allowed our country to prevail throughout our history. If we spend our time fighting amongst ourselves, we will never notice the threats aimed at our republic from outside or miss those individuals on the inside with their hands in the proverbial cookie jar wishing to do harm at home. Assuming as I write, that there are no more post-election revelations that upturn the normal order of things, I encourage you to pray for our country, pray for our new leader, but most of all pray for the healing of the wounds that have been inflicted upon our country

One campaign’s happy ending By the time you read this, the election will be over. Some will be licking wounds, others celebrating. While the candidates have been appearing in every corner of our state, I have been traveling, too. I spent October on a nonpolitical tour, campaigning to help bookstores sell my new book, North Carolina’s Roadside Eateries: A Traveler’s Guide to Local Restaurants, Diners, and Barbecue Joints. Thanks to those booksellers and many of you, the book is selling well. It made the Southern Pines Pilot’s weekly Sandhills Best-Seller List for most of the past two months, three weeks as No. 1 in the Paperback Nonfiction category. On the road, I have learned a lot more about other people’s favorite eating-places. People like

by guest columnist D.G. Martin to talk about food and the restaurants they visit when they are traveling. One question I got at every stop is this: “Have you got Meadow in your book?” People love this buffet restaurant on I-40 (Exit 334) near its intersection with I-95, not far from Benson. Because there are no signs to show the way, some folks think that

Meadow is their personal secret stopping place on the way to the beach. They can regale you with descriptions of Meadow’s meats, vegetables in great abundance, and its unbelievable assortment of pies and cakes, all for one modest price. I found out new stories about eateries I included in my book. For instance, my North Mecklenburg High School friend Robert Cooke, now called Bob, recently retired as professor of agricultural and biological engineering at Cornell University. He now lives near the small farm just south of Cornelius where he grew up. His respected farm family was not wealthy, to say the least. But when we talked about Troutman’s, a popular barbecue restaurant in Concord featured in my book, he smiled and told me his dad took the family to eat there “all the time.” Remembering that going out for a meal was a rare treat 60 years ago, I said, “You all were not rich. How were you able to afford to go?” He replied that his daddy cut hickory wood from downed trees on their farm and took truckloads to Troutman’s, where he got credit to use for his family to get good meals. An enduring story in North Carolina politics is how Rufus Edmisten’s remarks about barbecue during his campaign for governor in 1984 may have

cost him the election. As he explained, “I got up one night and, in a very, very lax moment – the devil made me do it – I made a horrible statement. I said, ‘I’m through with barbecue.’” When Edmisten showed up for my visit to Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh, we persuaded him to tell us the whole story. It was so good we could have charged admission. And there is a connection to the book. Edmisten explained that his first call about the widely circulated quote came from his campaign treasurer Wilber Shirley. Shirley is the legendary owner of Wilber’s Barbecue in Goldsboro, an important chapter in my book. He is so important that he could be called North Carolina’s Mr. Barbecue. he continued, As Edmisten was smiling, but it was a forced and practiced smile, as he explained that Shirley was not happy with him. His next call came from the head of the North Carolina Pork Council adding his complaint. Many more that followed. Edmisten continued, “And things were never the same. And I always believed that if I hadn’t said that about barbecue, I might’ve won the governor’s race.” There is more. And if my editors allow me, I will tell a few more stories in another column sometime soon.

Bang the drum with Happy Beat By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer “It all started as a date night with my wife,” said Donald Batten. “She bought me a drum and it set on the shelf for a long time. One night we decided to use it and came to a class here in High Point.” Since that night, the Battens have become regulars at the weekly classes conducted by Happy Beat Drumming, a small business dedicated to creating happiness through music. “The most important thing to bring to class is a sense of humor,” said Robin Leftwich who founded Happy Beat Drumming six years ago with partner Rachel Juren. Fun and laughter were certainly part of a recent session. A small group of students gathered to practice a particular arrangement and, although each participant was serious about getting it right, there was no shortage of joking around. Leftwich and Juren are students of African drumming who found joy in

making music. Their goal is to share that joy by teaching others and by building a community of like-minded people. Music has always been a part of Leftwich’s life. She grew up following her musician father as he performed. She was drawn to the drums, especially West African drumming and she has traveled to the Dark Continent to study several times. Over the years, she studied and taught with different organizations. However, she had a desire to do more. She and Juren began conducting classes and soon Happy Beat Drumming came to life. “Drumming is an empowering thing,” said Leftwich. “You don’t think about anything else when you’re drumming. It takes up your entire body, your whole energy. It’s about what you’re doing in the moment. “We’ve had people here who have never picked up a drum and we’ve had professional musicians.” “It’s very rare we have someone who doesn’t really enjoy it,” said Juren. Leftwich likens drum-

ming to creating art in that the process activates all parts of the brain. It is a stress reliever and fires off what she calls “happy endorphins.” She and Juren do need the stress relief afforded by Happy Beat. They both have serious day jobs and still commit large blocks of time to the business. “This is not a commitment, this is a passion” said Leftwich. “Commitment is such a grown up word; this is like playtime.” Happy Beat Drumming has two established weekly classes, one in High Point and the other in WinstonSalem. It also offers a monthly advanced class. Students do not have to own a drum to participate. In addition, it conducts a Passport Series in High Point and Asheville, which is a one-day intensive course taught by Leftwich. Its Signature Series brings in guest instructors to fulfill its mission of championing different musical One of the most important tools for drumming is the artists. hands. In addition to teaching,

Leftwich and Juren make and repair drums, particularly the Djembe, which is a goblet-shaped West African instrument. “One of the phrases we use a lot for class is this is a failure-free environment,” said Juren. “We all make mistakes, but the attitude is people are not sitting around waiting for you to mess up so they can belittle you. We don’t ever want anyone to leave feeling they aren’t good enough, that they’ve failed. “At the end of the day everybody should walk out of here with a pep in their step, feeling good about themselves and what they’ve done.” For more information about Happy Beat Drumming, visit the organization’s website at www. happybeatdrumming.com.

State accepting applications for Bicycle Helmet Initiative Community organizations are now able to participate in a state program designed to save the lives of children through the distribution of bicycle helmets to lowincome families. The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Bicycle Helmet Initiative is accepting applications for the program through Dec. 9. “The primary goal of the Bicycle Helmet Initiative is to save lives,” said Ed Johnson, interim director of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Division. “Helmets are the

single most effective safety device available for kids on bikes, and we know that helmets can help prevent serious injuries and fatalities.” Selected applicants may receive up to 100 helmets through the program, and helmets are required to be distributed during a bicycle safety education program. The initiative was previously open to government agencies only. Applicants are encouraged to partner with other groups or agencies in the com-

munity to extend the outreach of bicycle safety awareness. Potential partnerships could include police and fire departments, parks and recreation departments, health departments, community centers, churches and other non-governmental organizations. The mission of the Bicycle Helmet Initiative aligns with Gov. Pat McCrory’s N.C. Vision Zero campaign, which aims to eliminate all traffic-related injuries and fatalities through coordinated efforts with public and private partners in traffic safety.

Funding for the Bicycle Helmet Initiative is made possible through sales of the Share the Road specialty license plate. The program has made thousands of helmets available to children since it launched in 2007. Winners will receive the helmets by April 30, 2017.

For more information and to download the application, visit the NCDOT Bicycle Helmet Initiative website.

Veterans’ Day and ‘The Wall’

By CAROL REED Jamestown Public Library

I don’t recommend The Sympathizer, by Viet Thanh Nguyen. I’m only saying this because Veterans’ Day is on Friday, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated on Nov. 13, 1982. Both special events made me think about The Sympathizer, which I recently read, except for the torture parts. I admit I had to skip those pages. The book is highly recommended by reputable sources, by UNC-G professors and by some of my friends. It was well-written, historically accurate and educational about the time period and people’s opposing attitudes toward the conflict. The story was written like a memoir of a Viet Cong agent, as he spies on his South Vietnam general and the Americans even after he is flown to Los Angeles for safety at the end of the war. Then he returns to Communist Vietnam. Thus the torture and “re-education.” A wonderful video based on the autobiography of Senator John McCain, is Faith of My Fathers. Senator McCain tells of his training at the Naval Academy, his days as a hotshot Navy pilot and his five years at the Hanoi Hilton as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He was beaten, starved and isolated, but nothing

destroyed his indomitable spirit. Unfortunately, this has torture in it too, but we can fast forward past those parts. Into No Man’s Land, by Ellen Emerson White, is written for elementary children so torture should be limited. The author wrote it as if she were an 18-yearold Marine keeping a journal of his experiences during the siege of Khe Sanh, 1967-1968. Thirty Days with My Father: Finding Peace from Wartime PTSD is Christal Presley’s experience as she has difficult conversations with her Vietnam veteran, angry, traumatized father. She is trying very hard to reconnect with him. This is autobiographical. Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam was written by Cynthia Kadohata for the middle school set. Cracker is a bomb-sniffing dog that bonds tightly with his young American soldier handler. Though this is fiction, American soldiers actually used lots of dogs in Vietnam. Many were left there as we hurriedly pulled our people out before the North Vietnamese soldiers took over. Meish Goldish wrote a nonfiction book about Bomb-Sniffing Dogs for elementary and middle school children. It includes references and an index, making it useful for school reports, as well as interesting reading.

End of Daylight Saving Time means drivers need to be alert some drivers. Glare from the rising or setting sun and from headlights in the darkened afternoon poses another problem, as it reduces the ability to see clearly. It can increase reaction time because of its three to five second effect on vision, which may cause drivers to suddenly slow down or drift in their lane. There are ways to deal with the changing conditions. For drivers, tips include • Protect your eyes from glare and take the time for them to adapt to darkness before driving; • Adjust the rearview mirror to the “night” setting to avoid headlight glare; • Wipe off your headlights and keep your windshield clean inside and out; • Going east in the morning or west in the afternoon, the sun may be in your eyes, so allow more space between your vehicle and those in front of you; • Take off your sunglasses at dusk; • Slow down; • Remember high beams can blind an approaching

driver, bicyclist or pedestrian. If blinded yourself, look down and toward the right edge of the road; and • Look for pedestrians, bicyclists and deer along the roadway, and remember deer are more active at night. For cyclists and pedestrians: • Wear brightly colored clothing, ideally with fluorescent or reflective gear; • A new state law taking effect Dec. 1 requires cyclists riding between sunset and sunrise to have a light on the front that can be seen at least 100 yards away, and to have a red lamp or mirror on the back; • Look left-right and then left again before stepping off the curb, or pulling across a road on a bike, even if there is a traffic signal at the location; • Pedestrians should walk facing traffic so they can see oncoming vehicles; • Bicyclists are required to travel in the same direction as other vehicles; and • Avoid jaywalking and crossing between parked vehicles. You’re much more visible using the crosswalk.

Students at Haynes-Inman Education center enjoyed kayaking, archery and golf during Outdoor Adventure Day.

‘Outdoor’ activities brought inside for students with special needs By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer “Floating” along the halls at Haynes-Inman Education Center had many students filled with such exhilaration it could literally be seen on their faces. Although most will never have the opportunity to kayak down a river, the ingenuity of staff members from Greensboro Mainstream Resources, Lakes and Environmental

Education allowed H-I students to experience the thrill of such an experience. They were pulled along the school hallways in specially designed kayaks on wheels. The Nov. 1 event was the third year Greensboro Parks and Recreation has offered students at HaynesInman the outdoor activities of adaptive kayaking, golf and archery at an indoor setting. The school, located off Harvey Road in Jamestown,

serves people from 3 to 22 years old, who have severe to profound cognitive and/ or physical disabilities. The H-I staff is continually working to provide these students with curriculum and extracurricular activities to match that of their peers, only designed to fit each student’s individual abilities. “It’s the law to provide free, appropriate public education to students with disabilities,” said Vicki Simmons, the adaptive

physical education teacher at Haynes-Inman. “But it’s much bigger than that. “If my child had a significant cognitive disability, I would want him or her to have educational opportunities in academics, the arts and physical education, enrichment activities and character education, which had been modified to the child’s abilities. All parents want that for their children.” Greensboro Parks and Recreation Mainstream

Resources coordinated the event. Their staff – Sharon Williams, Jennifer, Derek, Remmie, Bryan, Tiana, Bryce and Cherish, along with teachers, other employees and family volunteers from the education center, helped make the event special for the kids. Jamestown United Methodist provides food for the weekend to JES students By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer This is the second of a two-part series about food insecurities in local schools. Imagine being hungry, really hungry, and having nothing in the house to eat. For some this is almost impossible to imagine. But unfortunately, for many school children it is a reality. The lunch they get on Friday may be the last meal they have until Monday. North Carolina has several cities with some of the highest levels of food insecurity in the nation, including Greensboro and High Point. Children in our local schools are affected by this overwhelming problem. When Rev. David Blankenberg, pastor of Oakdale Campus Jamestown United Methodist Church, learned there was a need to provide food for the weekends to some children at Jamestown Elementary School, he felt lead to help. As a lay pastor at Blair Road United Methodist Church

in Charlotte, he had created a program called Book Bags of Love that provided food for the weekends to 30 local school children in need and their siblings. “I’ve always had a passion for making kids feel loved and cared for,” Blankenberg said. “This type of program helps supply their physical needs. I have heard stories about students’ grades improving when they are not worried about food. They can concentrate on learning.” Other churches in the Charlotte area began to do the same thing for different local schools and eventually about 150 students were being helped through the program. “A church had been doing this for Jamestown Elementary, but was not able to continue the program this year,” Blankenberg said. “Having past experience and knowing the vision and mission of the Jamestown United Methodist congregation, I thought helping the children at Jamestown Elementary who had food insecurities would be a natural for them. The more

I prayed about it, the more comfortable I became with the idea.” The response has been very positive and with seed money from the church, Blankenberg was able to

fill 20 bags with food, which he dropped off at JES for distribution on Oct. 28. Instead of book bags, plastic grocery bags are used to carry the food.

Each one the children takes home contains enough food for up to a family of four. Items are complete, with nothing that needs to be added for a meal or snack. “These are kids in our own community that are being helped,” Blankenberg said. Food and monetary donations are needed to keep the program going for the entire school year. Blankenberg hopes to find ways for the community to become involved. He especially likes the idea of kids helping other kids. “Those who have more could help those who do not,” he said. “We need to teach our children to see the needs of others and act on them, to realize that others’ needs are as important as their own.” Blankenberg says the immediate goal of the Book Bags of Love program is to fill the hunger needs of local children and their families, with 100 percent of fundraising donations going directly to purchasing food for the students. The long-term goal is to find a way to have them become partners in

the ministry. “There is a danger of seeing the children as targets of our ministry,” he said. “We need to engage them to be able to see their individual gifts to help others, to teach them to pay it forward when they can. It’s about giving when you have the opportunity.” Blankenberg says it is also important to keep the program open-ended, to listen for what the needs are and how to best fill them. In addition to providing money to buy food, members of the church and the community are invited to help with food donations, packing the bags and delivering them to school. To learn how you can best help with the Book Bags of Love program for children at Jamestown Elementary School, contact Blankenberg at david@ jumc.org.

Norma B. Dennis can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownnews@north state.net.

JUMC supports Kids’ Café Helping children with food insecurities is nothing new to members of Jamestown United Methodist Church. The 2016-2017 school year began the church’s fifth year of supporting Kid’s Café. The Café operated for the 2012-2013 school year at the Washington Terrace Park Community Center, then moved next door to Parkview Village Elementary School the following school year. Kid’s Café is a free afterschool program. It currently serves 25 children each day. Volunteers from JUMC are at Parkview each afternoon, Monday through Thursday, to assist children with homework, read books with them, play educational games and provide other interesting opportunities such as arts and crafts and even yoga. The daily program concludes with a hot, healthy, delicious dinner so no child in the program goes home hungry. On Fridays each child receives a bag filled with apples, oranges and other nutritious snacks for them to enjoy over the weekend at home. All of this is totally funded through the church family and by individual donations. “Our program’s Mission

Statement is Feed the Body, Feed the Mind, Feed the Soul, Spreading God’s Abundant Love,” said program coordinator Angie Magnum. Members of JUMC also will prepare and deliver Thanksgiving bags of food for all the families of children participating in Kid’s Café at Parkview Village Elementary School. The community is invited to help by “filling a bag” or making a donation towards the meals. The approximate cost of a bag is $50, but any donation is appreciated. Below are suggestions to complete a “bag.” Donations for Thanksgiving need to be received by Nov. 15. Checks can be made to JUMC or Kid’s Café. Note “Thanksgiving” in the memo line. 2-3 lb. sliced ham or turkey breast 1 box of stuffing 1 can cranberry sauce 2–14.5 oz. cans green beans 2-14.5 oz. cans collards or other vegetable 3-5 lb. bag of potatoes or 2 large bags of rice 1 package of dinner rolls 1 dessert to feed 4-6 people

Millis Road Elementary students recently held their 3rd annual canned food drive for Greensboro Urban Ministry. Dr. Maria Reid, a parent of two children at the school, organized the event again and challenged each class to bring in 100 cans from Oct. 24-28. The generous student body collected 2,508 cans and all 21 classes won a Krispy Kreme doughnut party. “Urban Ministry was so thankful for our donation that will help many families,” said Patti Wilson, school secretary.

In addition, these new dates will allow its partners, The Salvation Army and Fox 8, the opportunity to focus on and wrap up their holiday programs in November and December, and then concentrate all their attention on coats beginning in January. “We’re excited about this change,” said Chris Edwards, president of A Cleaner World. “Parents that are blessed with the ability to give their children new coats for Christmas

will need to make room in their closets, and I can’t think of a better way to continue the theme of giving than by donating an outgrown coat to a child in need.” In addition to the date change, A Cleaner World is also encouraging groups to collect coats for the program in weeks leading up to Christmas. A Cleaner World will begin accepting coats to be cleaned and repaired for Give A Kid A Coat starting Dec. 27. “We believe this addition will bring in lots of coats to help jump start the campaign,” explained Edwards. “We realized that with the later dates, there might be some families that need coats before distribution begins, so families in des-

perate need of coats before Give A Kid A Coat begins distribution will be served at The Salvation Army Family Stores by vouchers for a free coat from their stores.” More details about the kick off and the 30th campaign will be provided closer to the campaign dates. This year the campaign welcomes two new media sponsors. Overhead Door Company of Greensboro and Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services will help spread the word about this worthwhile program.

Give A Kid A Coat is sponsored by A Cleaner World, WGHP/Fox8, 107.5KZL, WKRR Rock 92 and The Salvation Army.

Wear Blaze Orange while hunting – It could save your life

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Home From The Hunt™ safety campaign reminds hunters to comply with blaze orange requirements as firearms seasons commence across the state. Hunters in North Carolina are required to wear a blaze orange-colored garment, such as a hat or a vest, that is visible from all sides when hunting certain game animals with a firearm. These animals include bear, feral hogs, deer, rabbit, squirrel, grouse, pheasant and quail. Deer hunters must wear blaze orange during a deer firearms season, regardless of weapon. “Blaze orange is a color that doesn’t occur naturally in the wild,” said Chet Clark, the Commission’s eastern outreach manager. “The color has become synonymous with safety. It signals caution to anyone who sees it, so wearing it is an easy and effective way for hunters and non-hunters to stay safe while out in the field.” Studies show that blaze orange clothing increases visibility of the wearer. This helps the wearer be seen by other hunters, especially in low-light situations. This can also be helpful when locating someone who is lost or injured. Even though this requirement does not apply to a private landowner, his or her spouse or children, so long as they are hunting on the landholder’s property, the Commission strongly encourages everyone to practice safety by wearing blaze orange. For more information on hunting seasons, Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permits and the Hunter Education Program, visit www.ncwildlife.org or call 919-7070031.

GO FAR 5K Nearly 1,500 participants ran or walked a mile or 5K with local school groups, friends and family members as part of Go Out For A Run (GO FAR) on a chilly Nov. 5 morning in downtown High Point. Students represented 27 schools in Guilford, Davidson, Randolph and Forsyth counties and reached personal running goals set in their clubs. Local participants included Jamestown and Southwest Guilford elementary schools.

Launched in 2003 in response to the childhood obesity epidemic, GO FAR is a comprehensive 10-week after school fitness program designed to teach children of all abilities about healthy eating habits, goal setting and how to train for a 5K. GO FAR teaches kids that active, healthy lifestyles are fun and can be sustained throughout their lives. More information can be found at www. gofarclub.org.

Hunters: Always consider several things before pulling the trigger As deer season continues across the state, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Home From The Hunt™ safety campaign reminds hunters to always take their time and positively identify their target before pulling the trigger. “It’s easy to get excited when you’ve got something in your sights,” said Chet Clark, the Commission’s eastern outreach manager. “It’s important to collect yourself and ensure there are no houses, vehicles or

people in front of or behind your target.” The four basic rules of firearms safety: • Always point a firearm in a safe direction. • Treat every firearm as if it were loaded and never assume a firearm is unloaded. • Keep your finger out of the trigger guard and off the trigger until ready to shoot. • Be sure of your target and what is beyond your target.

One good practice is to use binoculars to first identify a target and then sight through a scope only when ready to fire. All first-time hunting license buyers must successfully complete a Hunter Education Course, offered free across the state. For more information on hunting seasons, licenses, Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permits and the Hunter Education Program, visit www.ncwildlife.org or call 919-707-0031.
