Firefighters prepare to attack blaze near Lake Lure.

PSFD answers call to help mountain fires By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer The big, red fire engine rolling down the street is a welcome sight in times of trouble. Members of the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department are first to arrive when help is needed in Jamestown and throughout southwest Guilford County. So it is no surprise PSFD was quick to respond when a plea went out for help to control wildfires raging in the mountains of North Carolina. Historically dry conditions unfortunately set the stage for fire in western North Carolina during October and November. There is speculation some of the fires were intentionally set, while others may have been caused by carelessness or lightening strikes. But whatever caused the initial spark, the end result was thousands of acres of rough terrain in flames. With local fire departments overstressed, the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshall put out an urgent request for assistance across the state. PSFD sent two teams to fight the Party Rock fire near Lake Lure. The first team, consisting of four members of PSFD and two members of the Greensboro Fire Department, deployed Nov. 12 taking one engine truck and one brush truck. The second team of eight followed five days later. “We didn’t know exactly what to expect,” said PSFD Chief Steve Allred. “We thought it might be like the pictures you see on

“December 7, 1941 – a date that will live in infamy – the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” Those famous words spoken by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as he addressed Congress asking for a declaration of war undoubtedly struck a chord in the hearts of Americans following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. American citizens gathered around large radios to hear updates on the battle on the Pacific island nation where the U.S. had a military presence. Now, 75 years later, anniversary events are going on commemorating the attack and remembering those who lost their lives. According to the Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary website (https:pearlharb or75thanniversary.com), tensions had been building for years between the United States and former World War I ally Japan, which relied heavily on imports of American oil and steel. As that country’s military presence escalated, the United States embargoed shipments of aircraft, scrap metal, iron ore, steel and oil. Roosevelt froze all Japanese assets in the United States in July 1941, just five months before the Pearl Harbor attack. American intelligence intercepted some Japanese messages and knew an attack was coming – but did
not know where or when. “Approximately 360 Japanese warplanes were launched from six aircraft carriers, reinforced by battleships, cruisers, and destroyers. The first divebomber was spotted over Pearl Harbor at 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time. It was followed by 200 aircraft, which decimated the American ships anchored there, most of which were only lightly manned because it was Sunday morning. Among the 18 U.S. ships destroyed, sunk or capsized were the Arizona, Virginia, California, Nevada and West Virginia. More than 180 planes were destroyed on the ground and another 150 were damaged (leaving but 43 operational). “American casualties (killed or wounded) totaled more than 3,400, with more than 2,400 killed (1,000 on the Arizona alone). The Japanese lost fewer than 100 men.” (Source: History.com) The attack took one hour and 15 minutes.
The United States has had a naval base presence at Pearl Harbor since 1887. “In 1898, the SpanishAmerican War broke out, and the strategic use of the naval base at Pearl Harbor during the war convinced Congress to approve formal annexation. Two years later, Hawaii was organized into a formal U.S. territory and in 1959 entered the United States as the 50th state.” (Source: History. com) “The 1940 U.S. Census found more than 37 percent of the Territory of Hawaii’s residents were ethnic Japanese – threefourths of them born in America. Young leaders of the Japanese community took pains to demonstrate their loyalty to America and build support among other Hawaii residents. As war loomed, however, suspicions grew and military intelligence, the FBI and Honolulu police gave closer scrutiny of the local Japanese community. See PEARL on A3

Holiday shipping deadlines loom By CAROL BROOKS Editor You’re so proud of yourself. All your Christmas shopping is done and gifts are wrapped for you to take to friends and family. But is there still time to mail or ship packages to other parts of the country or overseas? With Christmas Day falling on a Sunday this year, it’s more important than ever to get your holiday shipping organized. If you want a gift to arrive by Christmas, you should shoot for a Dec. 23 delivery. Packages that don’t make it by Friday might not see delivery until Dec. 27, as Monday, Dec. 26, is an additional non-shipping day. To ensure your friends and family don’t think you’re a Scrooge who didn’t send them a gift, follow the holiday deadlines

we can to put out the fire. If no structures are involved, it does the forest good to have a bit of burning. So I think we should sit back and manage the fire and make sure no structures will be damaged.” They also learned how to manage a large-scale incident, work with numerous agencies and organize a multitude of resources. And there is no doubt PSFD firefighters will be the first to go if another urgent plea for help is issued. “It was a very good experience,” said Allred. “The biggest take away was the hospitality and the gratitude we received while we were there,” said Carson. “(People) knew these resources were coming to help them in their time of need and we know we would get the same thing in return.” Jane Whitehorne can be reached at (Photo/Courtesy PSFD) 336-841-4933 or jamestownlegals@ The primary job of PSFD firefighters was to clear brush from around buildings. northstate.net.

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Billings hiring, salary still in question Editor, One Council Member told me the salary of the Interim Town Manager Cookie Billings was a “done deal” before the Council assembled in a closed session on Sept. 1 to approve hiring Cookie and approving her salary. Cookie is limited to an annual amount she can earn and still draw her pension. Apparently without any authority, the mayor and Councilmember Ragsdale made an offer to pay her annual limit of $66,000 for working only four months.
She didn’t negotiate this salary. I told Cookie I thought it was an excessive amount. She said that I am the only one that has made that comment to her. Others have welcomed her back with open arms and hugs. She thinks she is worth this amount under the circumstances. The Town came to her asking for help. It was not a “done deal” until the Council voted unanimously to set her salary at $16,500 per month. Including benefits and salary, it takes $17,735 per month to have Cookie on the payroll.

What has Cookie done to deserve this much money on top of her pension? She hired Chuck Smith as public works director, made him an assistant manager and four months later pushed the Council to make him the new town manager. In a bizarre way the Town chose a Trump-style way of removing Chuck Smith when the mayor and
Councilmember Ragsdale walked into Chuck’s office and told him, “you are fired” on Aug. 29. When you tell this story to outsiders, people can’t believe we have a Council that literally gives away public money as a gift not for services rendered. Council should always be good stewards of public funds. In this
The winds pounded upon the side of the house and seeped beneath the cracks around the windows and doors letting the chill of winter in the walls warmed by the wood stacked and burning in the fireplace. The sound of bells tinkled as they were pulled from a wood box which sat by the evergreen tree placed with love in the corner of the main room. Pearl tied the small bells with yarn to the boughs. In a small pan, Grandma Kitty popped corn, which would soon string into lengths to surround the tree from top to bottom. “Well, that should be enough,” she said. “Everyone find a place and let’s get busy.” The time spent stringing brought all the family ‘round to sit upon every open space as stories of Christmas passed were recalled and hopes and wishes for the coming yuletide rang through the laughter. “I want a wagon,” Nellie said as Pearl used her to model the popcorn string instead of the tree. end-of-life decisions and driving, can save families years of heartache, tension and even legal battles. However, research indicates that about two-thirds of American families put off these conversations. “The reality is these are tough things to talk about,” says Huber. “Lots of families are either uncomfortable with the topics or they just don’t know where to start.” That’s why this holiday season, the local Home Instead Senior Care office is sponsoring the “40-70 Rule®” program, which includes an Action Plan for Successful AgingSM and other resources to help ease these conversations between adult children and their parents. The idea behind the “4070 Rule” is that by the time adult children are age 40 and their parents are age 70, they should have these critical conversations that
will impact the parents’ future. Huber says that he hopes families will use the tools within the program to look, see and talk with their senior loved ones about areas where a change may need to be made. “One of the greatest gifts you can give an aging loved one is to honor their wishes for how they want to live,” Huber says. “And in order to do that, you need to know what those wishes are, what the obstacles might be, and how to best handle them.” For more information about the “40-70 Rule” program or to obtain a copy of the Action Plan for Successful Aging, visit 4070talk.com. – Article submitted by Home Instead Senior Care®, a network which provides personalized care, support and education to help enhance the lives of aging adults and their families.

Annual fundraiser once again supports community causes By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer
The auctioneer, known to many as Hamilton Culler, strolled into the ballroom at Sedgefield County Club with his usual flare. He was ready to get members of Sedgefield Woman’s Club and their guests to open their purses for a worthy cause. “Are you ready to participate?” he asked the group. “By participate, I mean bid more than you think you ought to.” Culler lead everyone in singing a stanza of ‘Jingle Bells,’ “To show your willingness to participate,” he added with a smile. Get a handle on depression during the holidays The holidays can be stressful for anyone, but for people with depression, the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s can destabilize and sometimes debilitate. Stress-related events, such as the holidays, may trigger half of all depressive episodes. The good news is that knowing how to avoid common triggers can prevent an episode from occurring. “A relapse-prevention plan is key,” said Dr. John Langlow, M.D., medical director of New Directions Behavioral Health. “You can do a lot to lower the risk of relapse if you plan
ahead.” Here are some tips to help prevent depression during the holiday season: 1. Know your limits: Delegate what you can’t handle. Hosting parties, attending events and buying presents can overload nerves. It’s OK to ask for help or forgo a festivity. 2. Stay connected: If you don’t feel well, you might be tempted to isolate yourself. Being alone can make you feel worse. Socializing raises the oxytocin levels in your brain, which improves your mood. 3. Remember your meds: Schedules often go out the window during
the holiday season, so it’s easy to forget to take your medication. Ask a friend or family member, or set up an electronic alert to remind you when it’s time to take your medication. 4. Reduce or skip the holiday toasts: Drink too much and your medication stops working. Downing more than two drinks a day can prevent your meds from helping you. 5. Get out in nature: Fresh air, sunshine and exercise are nature’s medication. Serotonin and dopamine are chemicals produced in the brain that improve mood and protect against mental health disor-

OBITUARIES SOCIAL CLUB LIBRARY WEDDINGS
Pearl Harbor- 75 years ago By CAROL REED Jamestown Public Library
It was 75 years ago today that Japan (then our enemy, now our ally) destroyed our Pacific Navy. The very next day, our country declared war on Japan and entered World War II. Since then, a plethora of books have been written about the war, the effect it had on people and countries, and the hope that it would be the last big war. So far, so good – if we don’t count the Middle East turmoil. We just received two new books about Pearl Harbor. The first one is by Brian Curtis, titled Fields of Battle: Pearl Harbor, the Rose Bowl and the Boys Who Went to War. Just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the 1942 Rose Bowl was moved from Pasadena to Durham for fear of a Japanese attack on California. As the Duke University and Oregon State College teams prepared for the game, America was preparing for war. On New Year’s Day, the two teams clashed under gray skies with occasional rain, in front of 56,000 spectators. Days later, the players and coaches entered the military. Four players died, many more were severely wounded. One OSC player saved the life of a Duke man. Another OSC player, a Japanese-American, was sent to an internment camp in Idaho. The second book is Bill
O’Reilly’s Killing the Rising Sun: How America Vanquished World War II Japan. The research delves into the Japanese army that followed the samurai code where surrender was dishonorable. The emperor refused to surrender, despite the mounting massive death toll. Simultaneously, President Franklin Roosevelt died, and Woodrow Wilson had to decide whether to use the new bomb developed in Los Alamos by Oppenheimer and his team of scientists. O’Reilly brings it all back in great detail as he weaves a page-turning saga. Scandinavian countries had their own way of fighting. In Snow Treasure, by Marie McSwigan, Norwegian children smuggle the country’s gold on sleds, past the soldiers, to boats waiting to ship it to the United States for safe keeping, so the Germans couldn’t use it to finance the war. The Boys Who Challenged Hitler: Knud Pedersen and the Churchill Club, by Phillip Hoose, takes the reader to Denmark, a country that did not resist Germany’s occupation. A group of 15-year-old boys were deeply ashamed of their leaders’ actions and formed a secret resistance club that performed countless acts of sabotage. After they were tracked down and imprisoned, a full-blown resistance began. On the flip side, our country’s reaction to

Learning skills associated with fine dining Imagine dining on Iberian Cuisine with Tortilla Española (Central Spain) and Gazpacho Andaluz (Andalusia) as appetizers. Follow that with entrees Paella Valenciana (Valencia) and Pescados Salsa Romesco (Catalonia) and sides of Frijoles and Espinaca (Spain) served with Rosemary Coca bread. Now imagine topping this delicious meal off with Vanilla Flan for dessert. Students in the Occupational Course of Study classes at Ragsdale High School got to do more than just imagine such a meal when they enjoyed it all during lunch at Guilford Technical Community
College’s culinary arts department on Nov. 22. This experience was academically and culturally based. Students all dressed up for the event and were taught table etiquette and the proper use of silverware when fine dining. “Few high school students get to actually experience proper table etiquette outside the home,” said Lori Nunes, OCS teacher. “Our plan in the OCS program is to prepare students for their post secondary transition.” The students also received a tour of the facility and kitchen conducted by Connie Loman, a student at GTCC.
The following students in the Guilford County Schools have achieved academic distinction for the third quarter and are included on the school system’s “A Team.” Students in Grades 9-12 who received a 4.0 or better grade point average during the first nine-week grading period qualify.

Following each season, The First Tee of the Triad presents awards to students who excel in any of the nine core values; awards are not necessarily presented for each value every year. As The First Tee of the Triad CEO Mike Barber announced the award winners, Wagner, who finished tied for fifth in his eighth Wyndham Championship appearance earlier this year, presented the awards and hosted a question and answer session for the award winners and their parents. The following
children representing multiple Piedmont Triad communities were recognized for their 2016 achievements: Jansen Bailey: Perseverance Award Grandover Resort Madison Cook: Community Award Gillespie Golf Course Gregory Reitz: Sportsmanship Award – Winston Lake Golf Club Sarah Walden: Code of Conduct Award – Gillespie Golf Course

lead. The final 3:51 of the frame was dominated by the Cowboys going on a 17-3 blitz, which started with a 14-0 run, to close out the opening stanza at 26-13. The second quarter had more Southwest momentum, including the apex in which a dunk by Ty Radford gave the Cowboys their largest lead up to that point at 38-19 at the 5:20 mark. Southwest managed to increase on the margin slightly just before the half with a deep 3-pointer, taking the tally to 49-27. Although the pace slowed slightly, the control of the game was still very much in favor of the hosts as the third frame closed with the Cowboys holding a 67-37 lead. The final frame was a bit sloppy but was highlighted by a ferocious dunk by Jalen Snipes as
“The First Tee is very near and dear to me,” Wagner said. “I’ve been attending First Tee events for a long time, but it was incredible to present the awards. There was one kid, I got to shake his hand earlier behind the scenes, and his hand was shaking – he was nervous. I just wanted to give him a hug. It’s crazy to be on this side of it now. I remember when I got to meet a PGA TOUR player when I was really young; I still remember it. It was the highlight of my life, and it made me want to play on the PGA TOUR. To get to meet these kids and hand out trophies for the wonderful things they’re doing was really special for me.” In addition, nine First Tee of the Triad students achieved ACE certification, the pinnacle of The First Tee. After completing the first four levels of certification, PLAYer, Par, Birdie and Eagle, students have the option of working towards the final step in the program. ACE focuses on personal planning and reinforces skills learned earlier
in the program. ACE graduates have also completed projects in four areas: community service, career, college and golf. The First Tee of the Triad ACE graduates, age and the locations they represent are below: Preston Ball, 18, Tanglewood Park Ryan Birkedal, 18, Tanglewood Park Donovan Durham, 18, Gillespie Golf Course Matthew Guo, 17, Tanglewood Park Wesley Holiday, 18, Gillespie Golf Course Colin Kirk, 16, Tanglewood Park Sofia Kremidas, 17, Winston Lake Golf Club Seth Lomison, 18, Winston Lake Golf Club Cassie Paulin, 17, Tanglewood Park “Hundreds of thousands of kids have gone through The First Tee programming, but only a very minor fraction of them graduate from the ACE Program,” Barber said. “A large percentage of the students that have achieved ACE Graduation have come from our chapter – nine in one year is unheard of. We have reason to believe our 2016 graduating class is the largest in the entire history of The First Tee. Our ACE graduates are shining examples of what longterm First Tee participants can achieve. Many of these students were accepted into First Tee national events this year representing our local chapter – that’s an incredible honor for them and our chapter. “We are extremely proud of our ACE Graduates and

These students are setting terrific examples of the core values First Tee programming teaches every day. All of our First Tee of the Triad students can look to these award winners and ACE graduates as examples of how to take advantage of all The First Tee programming offers. Congratulations to all of them for their accomplishments and achievements.” The First Tee of the Triad is currently operating at 17 facilities throughout the Piedmont Triad, central North Carolina and southern Virginia. Its programming is offered at Bryan Park in Browns Summit, Country Club of Salisbury, Gillespie Golf Course in Greensboro, Grandover Resort in Greensboro, Goodyear Golf Course in Danville, Va., Greensboro National Golf Club in Summerfield, Indian Valley Golf Course in Burlington, Iron Play Par 3 Links in Summerfield, Jamestown Park Golf
Course, Oak Hollow Golf Course in High Point, Rick Murphy Golf Academy in Greensboro, Ringgold Golf Course in Ringgold, Va., Statesville Country Club, Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, Winding Creek Golf Course in Thomasville and Winston Lake Golf Course in Winston-Salem. The First Tee of the Triad is one of 180 chapters operating some 1,000 golf programming locations in all 50 states and four foreign countries with more than 10 million participants. More than 7,000 elementary schools participate in The First Tee National School Program. For additional information, visit www.thefirstteetriad. org. The First Tee, an initiative of the World Golf Foundation, has as its mission, “To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.” The goal of The
First Tee is to provide the golf-learning facilities and the experience that will enable kids from every walk of life to partake of a game that teaches values for life and which can be played for a lifetime. Founded by the World Golf Foundation in 1997, The First Tee is a way to bring golf to children that otherwise would not be exposed to the game or its positive values. The program is overseen and has the active support of committee members representing Augusta National Golf Club, the Ladies Professional Golf Association, PGA of America, PGA TOUR and the United States Golf Association. Former President George W. Bush serves as Honorary Chairman; he succeeds his father, former president George H.W. Bush, who served as the The First Tee’s Honorary Chairman since the organization’s inception in 1997 and now serves as the Honorary Chair Emeritus.
over NW Guilford earlier in the week, while the Whirlies were looking to break out of an 0-4 funk to start the season. Last season’s game went in favor of the Cowboys in convincing fashion, 79-60. After watching the Cowgirls dismantle the Whirlies in the first game, the Cowboys were motivated to come out strong. A perfectly-executed tip on the jump ball lead to a 3-point play the old fashioned way, giving the Cowboys a 3-0 lead only four seconds into the game. A rebound and transition basket for Southwest made it 5-0. The Whirlies tallied a 3-pointer at the 5:53 mark. Southwest would put the clamps down defensively going on an 18-0 run before Grimsley got on the
board just before the close of the first quarter, which made it 23-5. The Cowboys went on a 10-0 to open the second quarter, putting the game at 33-5. It wasn’t until the 5:05 mark that the Whirlies got a basket, making it 33-7. Grimsley still fought hard to close out the opening half at 48-13. A monstrous put-back slam by Kobe Langley ignited the crowd in the opening seconds of the second half. Another Cowboy basket made it 52-13 before the Whirlies managed a free throw at the 6:40 mark. It wasn’t much longer until Southwest got the margin across the 40-point threshold, but a basket just before the buzzer made the score 62-24 at the end of the third quarter.
The Cowboy bench showed heart, playing in the final stanza as they held their own as they closed out the convincing 78-38 victory.
SW Guilford records victories during week Nov. 29 SW Guilford boys 88 NE Guilford 50 This was the home opener for the Cowboys of Southwest Guilford. The Cowboys were coming into the contest following their first regular season loss in November since 2009 and were looking to get back to playing quality Southwest basketball. In their last outing, the Cowboys were uncommonly out of sync. This game pitted the hosts against the visiting Rams of Northeast Guilford. The game opened up as a back-and-forth contest as the teams traded basket after basket for just over four minutes. At the 4:40 mark, the Rams took a 10-9 lead, which turned out to be the last time they would

DECADENT TREAT-FILLED Creating one-of-a-kind desserts doesn’t have to take hours in the kitchen or even exceptional baking skills. With a little imagination and the right tools, you can whip up surprisingly delicious sweets that will surprise and delight your friends and family. Focus on flavor If your baking repertoire typically consists of white cake and chocolate frosting, spice things up a bit by experimenting with new fillings and flavor combinations. Opt for complementary or contrasting tastes for a truly delectable dessert. For example, pair fudgy chocolate cake with tangy berries, or see how a bold flavor like lemon adds a new dimension to a mild vanilla. Add a special touch Infusing new flavors into your favorite cake or brownie recipe is surprisingly easy when you use bakeware made for the purpose. Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware Brownie Cake Cones 3 ounces unsweetened chocolate 2 sticks butter 1/2 cup cocoa powder 2 1/2 cups sugar 3 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons baking powder nonstick cooking spray Vanilla Frosting (recipe below) or ice cream

helps home bakers easily create “treat-filled” desserts. Each bakeware set comes with two pans: One pan creates the bottom half of the cake and forms indentations in the cake you can fill with fruit, puddings, candy and more, while the second pan creates the top half of the cake, which hides the surprise fillings. Shape it up Artfully applied frosting and other decorations can instantly dress up a basic cake, but another option is upgrading the shape of the cake itself. In addition to traditional square, round and sheet cake pans, the Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware collection includes mini heart cakes, fluted cakes, mini loaf cakes and a cake cones pan. These special shapes make it easy to create enviable desserts out of classic recipes. Find more surprisingly easy dessert ideas at FillablesbyBakersAdvantage.com.
