Parade means official start to Christmas holiday in Jamestown

It was a perfect North Carolina day for the annual Rotary Club Christmas Parade in Jamestown on Dec.

6. Sunny skies and warm temperatures provided a comfortable atmosphere for parade watchers to en-

joy the 99 entries as they passed by. Danny Harnden, FOX8 sportscaster, served as Grand Marshall for the event. Of special note was a

convertible with the hat and coat of former congressman Howard Coble draped on the back in memory of the many Jamestown parades

in which he participated. Although he passed away Nov. 3, Coble will long be remembered not only for the work he did representing the sixth district, but for the joy he received from participating in community

events. If you were not able to attend this year’s parade, sit back and enjoy browsing through pictures here and on page A8 of some of the highlights. If you did attend, enjoy the memories.

Council holds year-end meeting By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer The final Town Council meeting of the year is always a happy occasion as councilmembers and town staff celebrate the holidays. But every other year it is also a bittersweet time as sitting councilmembers leave office and new members are sworn in.

Outgoing councilmembers Brock Thomas and Will Ragsdale will be honored at the Dec. 15 meeting and incoming members Billy Ragsdale and Lawrence Straughn will be sworn in. The meeting will start one-half hour early, as is the custom. On the agenda is a public hearing to consider a text amendment to the Land Development Or-

dinance regarding permitted buildings in the Main Street zoning district. Residents of the Forestdale East subdivision will have the opportunity to learn the results of a stormwater report of the area. Several sections have been identified as problem areas. At the town’s request, Jamestown Engineering Group conducted a study. A new member will be

Planner to speak at Historic Society annual meeting By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer Jamestown’s history – and upcoming bicenten-

nial – takes on a special meaning this year when the town’s planner, Carrie Spencer, addresses the Historic Jamestown Society’s Annual Meeting on Dec. 13. Spencer’s topic will be “What Does It Mean to Walk with History?” Spencer, who joined the town in January, previously worked in Summerfield, another small town steeped in history. The meeting will begin with a brief business session to install new officers and board members. Current President Shirley Haworth and Mendenhall

appointed to the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee since current chairman Straughn has resigned due to his election to the Town Council. The Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. Dec. 15 in

the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend. The preceding evening, the Town Council will hold a special Closed Session meeting for the purpose of a performance evaluation

of the Town Manager.

Oops!

Although we aren’t exactly sure what happened, the driver of this vehicle apparently zigged when he should have zagged. On Dec. 8, employees and patrons at A Beauty Shop in Stafford Square on East Main Street heard a commotion and upon investigating saw this SUV had taken a nosedive into the parking lot in front of Galloni’s Triad Door Service. Thankfully no one was injured, but this vehicle will definitely need a trip to the body shop. (Photo/Submitted)

even if that benefit is indirect. Government and commercial UAS operators must adhere to state and federal requirements established by the North Carolina General Assembly and the FAA. Each classification is subject to specific regulations and guidelines. While recreational UAS flights are not heavily regulated, the FAA and model aircraft enthusiast groups have established a number of guidelines which should be followed to ensure a fun and safe experience: • Always fly below an altitude of 400 feet and fly within your direct line of sight. • Do not fly within 5

miles of an airport, near stadiums or other public events, or for compensation. • Do not fly UAS that weigh more than 55 pounds. • Do not fly at night, even if your UAS is equipped with lights. “UAS technology is fun and exciting, but it needs to be used responsibly,” said Division of Aviation Director Bobby Walston. “These guidelines will help ensure the safety of people in the air and on the ground.” North Carolina has laws governing drone use. UAS users are subject to all North Carolina laws.

NCDOT offers tips for drone safety This holiday season, one of the most popular gifts might actually fly off the shelves. Whether they’re called quadcopters, radio controlled planes or any of the high tech brand names, drones are expected to be big sellers this year, with some estimating as many as 700,000 will make their way into Americans’ homes by the end of December. All of these devices fall under the category of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). “We’re proud of North Carolina’s legacy of being first in manned flight,” said NCDOT Secretary Nick Tennyson. “The academic and industry researchers in our state will make us a

leader in unmanned flight as well.” NCDOT’s Division of Aviation has established guidelines for UAS operation in North Carolina. Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the NCDOT Division of Aviation classify UAS flight operations by three categories: • Recreational – Any UAS flight that is conducted solely for the purpose of recreation. • Government – Any UAS flight conducted by a government entity to support their work. • Commercial – Any UAS flight that serves a business purpose or provides a business benefit,

Sedgefield Woman’s Club hosts Christmas auction to aid others By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer “Just raise your hand, that’s all you have to do. Raise your hand and say ‘two,’” Hamp Culler called out as he encouraged the 210 guests at the Sedgefield Woman’s Club Annual Christmas Luncheon and Auction to raise the bid on an item. “It’s all for a worthy cause.” For the fifth year, Culler provided wit and flare to keep women bidding during the live auction part of the event. Items up for bid included everything from a trip to Hilton Head to a decorated Christmas tree, large metal snowman, chest of drawers, Valentine stay at Grandover, dinner for eight prepared by Sedgefield Country Club chef James Patterson, better known as J.P., and more. The Christmas luncheon

and auction is an opportunity for old and new friends to visit with one another, enjoy a delicious meal and open up their hearts and purses to help others. Last year the club raised $15,000 at the Christmas auction, which also includes a silent auction held before the luncheon begins, raffle prizes from local businesses and wine raffle. Proceeds from this year were not available at press time. “We support local and international efforts and contribute to at least 30 different (charitable) organizations each year,” said Rebecca Scheffer, president. “We also provide a scholarship to a Ragsdale senior.” Sandy Soroush chaired this year’s event.

Opinion

Can we please stop? Guest Editorial by LAURA FINLEY

Surely some uber-conservative political candidates will call me out on “politicizing tragedy” but I don’t care. I don’t want to pray for victims. I don’t want to seek vengeance on perpetrators. I want this never to happen again; I want to never feel this weight again. Not just something but so many things must be done. My heart is so heavy to learn of not one but two mass shootings in the U.S. on Dec. 2. While the news is focused on San Bernadino, Cal., as I write at least 14 people are dead and 17 seriously injured,

another mass shooting occurred earlier in the day in Savannah, Ga. We have now endured more shootings in 2015 than days in the year. Yes, that’s right, an average of more than one per day. What do we do? It won’t be easy, that’s for sure. But there are some obvious components, and some other things we need to consider that are rarely part of the public dialogue. Gun control? Check. We have to create sensible policies that at least make it more difficult for dangerous people to acquire dangerous weapons. Provide better mental health services? Check. Without a doubt we need to

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

be way better at recognizing who is suffering from mental illness, who among that population might be a threat to themselves or others, and offer supports for them to reduce the chances of horrific violence. But in addition to those seemingly obvious answers, we also need to think about what motivates mass shooters in the first place. While some suffer from mental illness, many are simply people who have lost hope, who see themselves as worthless. The above-listed solutions do nothing to address how we change the hearts and minds of people. I do not profess to have all the answers, nor do I think any

one thing is “the” solution, but I do think we need to talk a lot more, and act a lot more, to create a populace that sees violence itself as abhorrent. We need to create a society in which people’s natural instinct for dealing with difficult times is not to pull out a gun or other weapon but rather to seek help and guidance and to use their humanity and creativity to work out another answer. What I am not hearing much about is the importance of teaching people to think and act differently. We need to teach young people (and every age – it’s never too late.) that they can and have to express how they feel. We

need to teach people how to receive that information and how not to judge but to empathize and support. We need to help people learn how to adapt when things don’t go as planned, and we need to learn to be better cheerleaders for one another. We need to teach people resiliency, as things will likely be challenging at some point but with ample coping skills we can not only survive but thrive. We need to figure out how to help people see a ray of light, a bit of hope, in what can often be perceived as a hopeless situation. In essence, we need peace education. Everywhere. All the time. Peace education teaches people that

not only are there nonviolent ways to resolve conflict but that each one of us is responsible for doing so. It emphasizes that we have to build our capacities for love, acceptance and understanding if we want a better world. Laws and policies can help, but changing the way we think is imperative. Can we please agree to do this? It’s hard, but also not that hard. Our future seriously depends on it. Another way is possible, people. Let’s make it happen.

a 1940s spy thriller set in World War II Washington where a young North Carolina woman confronts Axis plots. Music and culture: Doug Orr and Fiona Ritchie recently won the 2015 Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award for their book, Wayfaring Strangers: The Musical Voyage from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia. The book and accompanying CD tie the mountain music of Appalachia to its people’s homelands in the British Isles. Food: Sheri Castle’s The Southern Living Community Cookbook is

a perfect gift for anybody who loves the old community and church cookbooks. Bridgette Lacy’s new Sunday Dinner is a short combination memoir and recipe collection celebrating our region’s tradition of big family meals. In Foods That Make You Say Mmm-mmm, Bob Garner travels across the state to tell us about our favorite foods. Marcie Ferris’s The Edible South: The Power of Food and the Making of an American Region is an in-depth look at the origins of Southern foods. For history and political buffs, William Leuchtenburg’s The

American President: From Teddy Roosevelt to Bill Clinton, came out last week. One reviewer’s opening sentence was simply, “Wow!” Two recent biographies of important North Carolina figures might be good choices: Julian Pleasants’ The Political Career of W. Kerr Scott: The Squire from Haw River, which recently won the Ragan Old North State Award for Nonfiction, and John Hood’s Catalyst: Jim Martin and the Rise of North Carolina Republicans. Finally, there are two compelling nonfiction

works by N.C. State professors: Cat Warren’s What the Dog Knows: The Science and Wonder of Working Dogs about the life and work of a cadaver dog, and Rob Dunn’s The Man Who Touched His Own Heart, a captivating history of efforts to understand and heal human hearts. There will be more about some of these books in later columns. In the meantime, take this list to your local bookseller who can help you make selections and suggest other options for folks on your gift list.

Dec. 11, 1941 – A major turning point in World War II occurred as Japan’s Axis partners, Italy and Germany, both declared war on the United States. The U.S. Congress immediately declared war on them. President Roosevelt then made the defeat of Hitler the top priority, devoting nearly 90 percent of U.S. military resources to the war in Europe. Dec. 11, 1998 – The House Judiciary Committee approved three articles of impeachment charging President Bill Clinton with perjury and obstruction of justice. Dec. 12, 1870 – Joseph Hayne Rainey of Georgetown, S.C., became the first African American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Dec. 12, 1998 – The House Judiciary Committee approved a fourth and final article of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, charging him with making false statements in his answers to written questions from Congress. Dec. 13, 1862 – During the American Civil War, the Battle of Fredericksburg

occurred in Virginia as the Union Army of the Potomac under General Burnside suffered a costly defeat, losing 12,653 men after 14 frontal assaults on well entrenched Rebels on Marye’s Heights. Confederate losses were 5,309. Dec. 14, 1911 – Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole. Dec. 15, 1791 – The Bill of Rights (first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution) became effective following ratification by Virginia. Dec. 15, 1890 – Sioux leader Sitting Bull (native name Tatanka-yatanka) was killed in a skirmish with U.S. soldiers along the Grand River in South Dakota as his warriors tried to prevent his arrest. Dec. 15, 1939 – “Gone with the Wind” had its world premiere in Atlanta. Dec. 15, 1961 – Nazi SS-Colonel Adolf Eichmann was sentenced to death in Jerusalem for his role in the Holocaust. Dec. 15, 1964 – Canada adopted a new national flag featuring a red maple leaf on a white background.

What book for the perfect gift this gift-giving season? Have you seen the TV ad with George Foreman? “People ask me all the time, George, how do I get my idea in front of companies.” Well, this time of year people ask me all the time “DG, what is a good book for me to give this Christmas?” I don’t have one perfect answer. But I can suggest some recent North Carolina related books to consider. Memoirs: Three prominent North Carolina writers shared their life stories in recent books. In Half of What I Say Is Meaningless, former state poet laureate Joseph Bathanti tells how a working class Catholic from Pittsburgh confronts the Bible Belt when he moves to North Carolina. Bestselling author of Under the Tuscan Sun, Frances Mayes, in Under Magnolia: A Southern Memoir, gives an account of growing up in the small-town 1950s South. Famed novelist David Payne, in Barefoot to Avalon: A Brother’s Story, tells about growing up in Henderson and the family stresses that exploded when his younger brother was killed in an automobile accident. The explosion of race-

by guest columnist D.G. Martin related discontent in our cities and campuses pushes us to look for wisdom in the experience of others. The memoirs of Howard Fuller in No Struggle, No Progress and Damon Tweedy in Black Man in a White Coat can give people of every color a better understanding of the experiences of black people in a white world. Mysteries: Two famous North Carolina writers, Kathy Reichs of the Bones series and Ron Rash of Serena fame have new books set in the North Carolina mountains. Reichs’ new book is Speaking In Bones, and Rash’s is Above the Waterfall. Margaret Maron gives us Long Upon the Land, her final Judge Deborah Knott book. Sarah Shaber’s brand new Louise’s Chance is

Couple brings beach dining inland By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Jessica Yakout and her husband Jack are passionate about seafood. “When I head toward the beach, I feel the ocean calling to me,” Jessica said. “Some of my best memories are big seafood dinners with family. Jack has similar memories.” It is little wonder that when the couple decided to open a new restaurant in Jamestown, they elected to focus on seafood. “There is nothing like this in the area,” Jessica said.

The Yakout’s 6-year-old daughter selected the name Captain’s Fish House for the restaurant, which is located at 709 W. Main Street. She also helped her parents select some of the decor. The couple got many ideas for the decorative touches – such as rope lining the entrance, a boat beside the building and the color – from observing their favorite seafood restaurants at the beach. “We probably looked at a billon shades of blue before selecting the one we used,” Jessica said. “This looks like the beach and we wanted to bring a little bit of the beach to Jamestown. “I think it has a homey feel and

that is what we were looking for. I wish my grandparents were here to see it. They loved seafood.” The business held a soft opening Nov. 10 and is currently open from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 12-5 p.m. Sunday. Plans for the future include extending hours to cover lunch. “We are family owned and operated,” Jessica said. “As a small business, we are more focused on our customer base and serving the community. We are always looking to improve our craft.” Jessica is more than co-owner in the business, however. She is serving as manager of Captain’s Fish House. Her association with the food industry began in high school when she worked part time at a restaurant. She was later promoted to head waitress. “I love food service,” she said. “There is something about feeding people that makes me happy.” Jessica met Jack when he came into the restaurant where she was working. Although he has a degree in engineering, he had owned a restaurant for a while before they met. “Jack likes being a small business owner and enjoys food service also,” she said. But we love the seniors who come in as well. Our goal is to be a growing and prosperous family restaurant for all ages. “We are pleased with the response we have gotten so far. We have had repeat customers

and a lot of good feedback. It is exciting for us and we look forward to seeing what others in Jamestown have to say.”

Foot care is important to overall health By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer Painful feet can affect your ability to tackle basic daily tasks. When it is uncomfortable to walk, it is difficult to perform your normal routine. All you want to do is take your shoes off and sit down. Even if aching feet don’t cause you to curtail your activities, they can certainly cause you to enjoy life less. Going about your business while in pain saps your energy and your good humor. According to information from Foot.com, an online foot health network, the average adult takes between 4,000 – 6,000 steps a day. Fitness expects say we should average at least 10,000 steps a day to maintain health. No matter how you look at it, that’s a lot of pounding the pavement. Factor in that a quarter of the body’s 206 bones are located in the feet, it’s no wonder our dogs are barking at day’s end. So it comes as no surprise

Healthy feet are happy feet. that foot health is an important component to maintaining general well being. Dr. DeKarlos M. Dial discussed foot health during a recent program in the Concerning Women series conducted at High Point Regional UNC Health Care Millis Regional Health Education Center. “I had a patient with bunions who was very selfconscious about her feet,” said Dial. “After treatment, she was no long self-conscious. Her feet felt better and she started wearing sandals and getting her toenails painted. “Foot problems can

affect anyone at any time in life and there are treatments to help. Surgery can make a real difference, but it is used only as a last resort. There are three reasons to have foot surgery – pain, pain and pain.” Dial, a physician with Cornerstone Foot and Ankle at Westchester, spoke about some of the most common foot problems including Plantar Fasciitis and ankle injuries as well as other conditions. “Plantar Fasciitis affects 2 million people a year and about 10 percent of all Americans will experience it at some time in their lifetime,” said Dial. “It is the most common thing a foot doctor will see in his office. “The hallmark symptom is in the morning when you wake up and get out of bed, you put you foot down and it hurts, it really hurts. There will be excruciating heel pain that will reduce over time, but never go away completely. Usually there is no history of trauma and there may or may not be swelling, but most likely you will be limping.”

Plantar Fasciitis, Dial explained, is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, often caused by excessive stretching. The key to treatment is addressing the reason for the stretching followed by anti-inflammatory drugs and exercise as well as wearing properly fitted shoes. If surgery is necessary, the success rate is 90 percent. Another common problem Dial deals with is ankle sprains. “Roughly 15 percent of all sports-related injuries are ankle sprains,” said Dial. “They are the most common muscle-skeletal injury causing patients to go to the emergency room. What happens usually is you turn your heel over, often when playing sports. But lately I’ve seen several women wearing high heels turn their ankles. It’s very common with shoes that aren’t very stable.” Depending on the severity of the sprain, treatment ranges from wrapping the ankle with an elastic ban-

dage to weeks in a cast. Podiatrists, or foot doctors, treat many other conditions including bunions, hammertoes, flat feet, toenail fungus, ingrown toenails as well as diabetic foot problems. The point to remember is the importance of seeing a physician

for a complete evaluation. “Many problems can be avoided, or prevented, with proper care of the feet,” said Dial.

OBITUARIES SOCIAL CLUB LIBRARY WEDDINGS

Kings and Princes By CAROL REED Jamestown Public Library Kings don’t seem to be as popular as queens and princesses. The Jamestown Library doesn’t have nearly as many books about kings and princes. Maybe it’s because men don’t wear twirly dresses that are so popular with little girls. The King’s Speech is a movie based on a book written by Mark Logue. The title is ambiguous. Does it mean a speech that the king gives? Or does it mean his speech impediment, like his life-long stutter? The true story is based on the relationship between the Duke of York who becomes King George VI and his speech therapist Lionel Logue. Both book and movie are worth checking out. Young Prince Philip: His Turbulent Early Life is a biography of England’s longest serving consort (royal spouse). He is married to one of the most famous women in the world and is easily recognized, but his origins remain a bit obscure. Read Philip Eade’s book to see a whole new side, his upbringing in Greece, France and Nazi Germany, to this dignified prince. Philippa Gregory wrote

The King’s Curse which tells about an old curse that may be responsible for all of Henry VIII’s troubles. This fictional tale is Gregory’s specialty: Henry’s wives, their lives, loves and deaths. Author Jack Whyte wrote a historical novel about Robert the Bruce, Scotland’s most famous king. This young man was a favorite of the English King Edward but was betrayed and used by all he trusted. Was he a traitor to England or to Scotland? It seems like even he wasn’t sure at some points in his short life. The most recent interest in princes was sparked in 2011, with the royal wedding of Catherine Middleton and Prince William, heir to the throne after his father Prince Charles. Since then, they have had two children and still seem to like each other. The royal wedding had all the pomp and splendor required. Books were written and DVDs produced. The British Broadcasting Corporation covered The Royal Wedding at Westminster Abbey, including Catherine’s arrival, the ceremony, the carriage procession and the traditional appearance on the balcony at Buckingham Palace. Vicki Simmons named District Employee of the Month The banner above the door to the gym at HaynesInman Education Center bears a message inviting guests to feel compassion, hope and kindness. Not your typical sports-related message, but then Vicki Simmons is not your typical physical education teacher. Simmons, an adapted physical education teacher at this special needs school, was named the December Guilford County Schools Employee of the Month. Compassion, hope and kindness is what Simmons offers the students and staff at Haynes-Inman Education Center, who know that she will do anything she can to assist and celebrate them. “Victoria Leigh Simmons is the most enthusiastic teacher that I have ever had the pleasure of working with in 40 years,”

says physical therapist Margaret Akingbade. “She loves her students and they love her back. Her adapted PE program is the envy of her peers throughout the state of North Carolina. “This wonderful teacher is never too busy or too tired to help anyone who needs her help, including staff, parents and students alike. She is an asset to her profession and to our Guilford County Schools community.” As Employee of the Month, Simmons received a $50 gift card from Sam’s Club, which has given more than $6,000 to outstanding GCS employees since 2005. During the month of December, her photo will hang at the district’s central offices, at Haynes-Inman Education Center and at the Sam’s Club on Wendover Avenue.

College News WOFFORD COLLEGE Bonner Scholar Emily Batista attended the National Bonner Congress meeting Oct. 9-11 at the University of Houston. The mission of the Congress is to develop their Big Ideas, strategize about issues in their region, and learn from each other and national partner organizations. Batista, a member of the class of 2017, is majoring in accounting. She is the daughter of Jose and Rebecca Batista of Greensboro.

In the fall of 1990, the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation began recognizing students who demonstrated the ability to succeed both in the classroom of their colleges and in the communities beyond those classrooms. To promising students whose economic situations ordinarily demanded that they spend their out of class hours and summer months raising money to meet college expenses, the Bonner Foundation awarded scholarships and provided other practical support.

It is the kind of love that lasts throughout eternity, without changing. It is the kind of love that leaves the halls of glory and comes to live on this earth, in human form. Everlasting love sacrifices Self for others voluntarily. This kind of love comes in the form of a tiny newborn baby, dependent on others for everything. Three from RHS sign to continue sports in college By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer It’s a proud day at Ragsdale High School when a student-athlete signs a letter of intent to continue their sport at the college level. It’s a better day when multiple student-athletes sign, as was the case on Dec. 1 when Chesney Ward, Erin Whitman and Cameron Bope gathered with their friends and family in the school’s media room. Athletic Director Brian Herndon said signing events are about more than just the student athletes. “I get this feeling when we have these ceremonies – you can tell it right away – these folks up here are excited but their buddies, their friends, their teammates, classmates are as excited as they are,” Herndon said. “That’s how it ought to be.” “These three up here have represented us just like you do,” he continued, pointing to the audience, “with class and dignity and in a first class manner.” Herndon also congratulated the parents who served as examples to their children. Chesney Ward will attend Duke University next fall and participate in the track & field program. Her parents, Ron and Pam, attended the signing ceremony along with other family members. It was track coach Anne Popek who steered Ward into pole vaulting to supplement her track prowess. “Chesney is going to a great place,” Popek said of Duke. “She earned it. She works hard.” “I want to thank her for pushing me,” Ward said. “I

didn’t know if I wanted to do it or not.” Ward has been running track since seventh grade and pole vaulting two years. “I love the performing aspect of vaulting, where running makes me nervous,” she said. “Both are so rewarding.” The highest she has vaulted was 12 feet 5.5 inches. Her personal best performances have come at national meets. Ward is not just an athlete. “She is incredible on the violin,” Herndon said. “One of the best in the state.” Ward has played violin for 11 years and will take that interest to Duke as she majors in music. Although several years down the road, she is thinking about pre-med for graduate school.

Erin Whitman will attend Averitt College in Danville, Va., and play volleyball. Her parents, Roger and Beth, attended the signing ceremony. Whitman was a cheerleader when she first came to Ragsdale, but volleyball soon caught the majority of her time. She actually began playing in the fourth grade at the Ragsdale YMCA, with a little urging from her father who played volleyball in high school and college. At 5 feet 9 inches tall, No. 15 Whitman was captain on this fall’s team, which finished 12-13 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Her position is outside, front row and back row. “Sometimes I have a little bit of a temper,” Whitman said, “which can be a good thing because when I get angry, I start doing better and hitting harder.

“I’m one of the big hitters. I do a lot. I never come out. “Volleyball is everything to me. I love it more than anything.” “She brings the thunder when she hits the ball,” said Glenn Cashion, who was filling in for first-year coach Jeff Mei. Cashion was quoting from an area newspaper. “She’s oftentimes seen reaching under the net and congratulating an opponent. “That speaks very highly of her character, the athletic program and of her school.” Whitman can play both hard and sand courts but prefers the indoor hard courts. She is thinking about coaching once she finishes college, where she plans to major in special education. Cameron Bope has signed with the University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive, N.C., in lacrosse. His mother, Carol, attended the signing ceremony. Coach Jay Goldsmith was out of town for the signing, so Herndon filled in. “When Cameron came here we were getting to be decent in lacrosse,” Herndon said. “We’re a whole lot better now. “He’s fast and has good ball/hand/eye skills. He’s relentless – never lets up, no matter what the score is.” Bope started playing lacrosse in the seventh grade and rose to be captain of last year’s team, which finished 8-9 overall and 6-7 in the conference. He’s looking forward to his senior season. “In seventh grade I got cut from the baseball team so I instantly went out for lacrosse,” No. 15 Bope

‘Reindeer’ racers prepare to romp By GINNY SCHAADT Ragsdale YMCA Healthy Lifestyles Coordinator

You know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen, but if you missed out on the 11th Annual Katherine A. Ragsdale Reindeer Romp 5K, then you are unaware of the 325 others. That’s right, 325 racers took part in last year’s 2014 Reindeer Romp and more than 400 are expected this year. The 2015 Reindeer Romp marks the 12th Annual 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk event hosted by the Mary Perry Ragsdale YMCA, 900 Bonner Drive in Jamestown. The event raises funds for the Annual Giving Campaign, the YMCA’s annual scholar-

ship program that provides assistance to families who may otherwise be unable to participate in our programs. Supporting the Reindeer Romp supports your neighbors and community. Racers will range from 4 years old and up and will feature several area Go Far racers as well. Go Far is a national program designed to help combat childhood obesity along with teaching children responsibility and goal setting by training for and completing a 5K event. We encourage every member of the family to run this race and be active at the holidays. Create positive healthy habits and live life to its fullest. This is also the final race in the 2015 Run 4 the Y race series. You don’t want to miss it.

but three of the final 18 Titan points. A Tim Kilpatrick bucket and free throw gave the Titans their first lead, 59-58, at the four-minute mark. The lead changed hands on each ensuing possession, with Scott scoring three consecutive baskets for GTCC. Walton’s basket with 1:15 remaining tied the score again at 67.
