Water Authority to test for 1,4-dioxane By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer

Braving the cold for a cause

(Photo/Scott Dennis)

Students from Tiger Rock Martial Arts took a deep breath and plunged into the chilly waters at an outdoor pool to raise funds for Special Olympics. See more pictures on page B1.

The Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority (PTRWA) plans to run tests this spring at a pump station on Groometown Road to determine if 1.4-dioxane is contaminating the drinking water coming from the Randleman Reservoir on Deep River. The station receives sewage from High Point’s Eastside Wastewater Treatment Plant before sending it on to the

Reservoir. The unregulated solvent came to light recently after it was discovered that although the levels of 1,4-dioxane found in untreated water in the Reservoir are not considered dangerous, those levels rise farther north along Deep River. In addition, towns downstream of the Reservoir have tested high levels of 1,4-dioxane from the Cape Fear River. Deep River feeds into the Cape Fear. The Environmental Protection Agency has tagged

1,4-dioxane as a “probable human carcinogen” and is considering adding it to its list of regulated contaminants. The EPA says that 1,4-dioxane is used as a solvent. Consumers can come in contact with 1,4-dioxane through use of cosmetics, detergents and shampoos. It is used in the manufacture of antifreeze, paint, paint strippers and varnish. The Centers for Disease Control indicates a person also can be exposed to 1,4-dioxane See WATER, page A3

Student ideas for Oakdale include retail and residential By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer February’s Planning Board meeting drew a larger number of audience members than is usually present for anything other than an original Forestdale neighborhood rezoning public hearing. They were there to hear what students from N.C. A&T had envisioned for the Oakdale Cotton Mill area. Actually, the mill site and mill village is only half of the students’ focus. It really encompasses almost the whole length of Oakdale Road, a project the students termed Oakdale Hollow. Last fall, seniors in the N.C. A&T Landscape Architecture Program visited the town as a class project to study the 150-acre area along Deep River. They researched a variety of topics, returning in October to lead a Community Design Workshop to get citizen input. The ideas generated from that meeting were analyzed in class and presented for the semester’s grade.

Two of the students, Zanard Choice and Cameron Constantine, presented the class’ well-designed findings to the Planning Board and audience members on Feb. 8. “It was important to create a sense of community,” Choice said of their designs, which often harkened back to the days when the mill was a bustling part of Jamestown. People used to know everything about the mill – who worked there, who ran the store, etc. and frequented the Oakdale Community Center which burned down in 1955, the students said. A portion of their designs incorporated the vision of a new community center as well as what they called an agricultural center, like when people had gardens behind there homes. With the proposed Jamestown Bypass running through the center of the site, the designs were divided into north and south sections, with the north being more contemporary and commercial and the south being the mill and

village area. The students envisioned a greenway trail running under the bypass from north to south. Much of the area is undevelopable due to being wetland area along Deep River. The students envisioned elevated walkways over portions of the wetlands. In the northern section, the students proposed a commercial center along Oakdale Road, approximately where the water tower used to be. Behind that would be a village of single-family homes and amphitheater. At the Oakdale Mill, the area would be enhanced with an agricultural center, arboretum, wedding village and single-family homes, using existing structures if possible. A boathouse and docks – or at least river access – is also possible. The mill itself was not studied. The students identified nine structures of historical importance in their study, including the Public Library and the RobbinsHolton Mill on Dillon Road.

New non-denominational church begins in Jamestown By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Purpose: “Love God, Love People, Serve The World.” Love People. It could be said The Summit Church is going back to its roots. Located at 4440 High Point Road in Kernersville, the church first began meeting at Southeast Middle School on Easter of 2000. It moved

to its current location in February 2008. Attendance continued to climb and found the church holding two services on Saturday and three on Sunday. “It was either build a larger building or go with multiple locations,” said Pastor Brian Marston. “We decided to invest our time and energy in taking (God’s) message out.” On March 13, some of the congregation will follow the charter members’ example and begin meeting in a school. The Summit Church Jamestown will hold services in the auditorium at Ragsdale High School on Sundays at 10 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m. This is not the first extension of The Summit Church. Approximately three years ago, the church began a congregation at Oak Ridge Elementary School.

“That group is currently praying for land on which to build a church,” Marston said. “They feel God will make it clear when the time is right.” Feeling the need to expand yet again, the staff at The Summit Church realized that the second biggest attendance at their church was coming from the Jamestown area. “When we saw we were reaching people in this area, it made sense to start where so many in our congregation lived,” Marston said. “The principal at Oak Ridge Elementary is friends with Mr. (James) Gibson, the principal at Ragsdale. She mentioned to him how good it was to have the church at her school. When we considered the possibility of coming to the Jamestown area, the staff approached Mr. Gibson about meeting here.”

Arrangements were made for The Summit Church to have a satellite church at Ragsdale. “The school has been fantastic to help us get started, and we look forward to a continued relationship with the staff.” Marston said. “We are excited about being here. There are 20,000 plus people living within a five-mile radius of Ragsdale. We believe this is a great opportunity to share the love of Jesus.” Five staff members have been hired for The Summit Church Jamestown, including Marston. He has served as a youth pastor for 16 years, the past nine at The Summit Church. Named to the position of campus pastor for the Jamestown location last November, Marston will minister to the congregation here. During Sunday worship, the music will be live and

Marston will lead the opening and closing remarks. The Reverend Jonathan Robbins, the lead pastor at The Summit Church, will preach the main sermon, which will be broadcast from the Kernersville location. Peak, a program for children ages birth to 4K, will be offered at both the 10 and 11:30 a.m. services, as will KidSummit, a program for ages 5K-fifth grade. “We plan to begin something for kids in grades 6-12 in August,” Marston said. “Called Impact, it has its own time to meet. The one in Kernersville meets on Wednesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. and the one in Oak Ridge meets on Sundays from 6-7:30 p.m.” Marston and his wife Brooke, intend to relocate to the Jamestown/High Point area with their four children. “I want to be invested in

the community,” Marston said. “We are committed to this ministry and I plan to put my whole heart into it. “

Human Trafficking major problem locally, statewide, nationally Triad Ladder of Hope created to help victims By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer Sandra Johnson was sitting quietly in a local restaurant recently sipping on a smoothie when her invisible radar went on high alert. “There is a man and a young girl coming in the door. When I see something like that I watch very closely,” said Johnson. “I am constantly watching; I can’t not watch.” What she was looking for were signs the young girl might be in distress; that she might be a victim of human trafficking. A form of modern-day slavery, human trafficking is a highly profitable, growing criminal industry in which the perpetrators use force, fraud or coercion to control and profit from their victims through sexual exploitation or forced labor. According to the International Labor Organization, it generates $150 billion in illegal profits yearly. Johnson is founder of Triad Ladder of Hope, a 501(c)(3) faith-based, nonprofit organization

SANDRA JOHNSON dedicated to eradicating the exploitation, sale and enslavement of men, women and children. But how did this average woman from the Piedmont Triad take on such a daunting crusade? And why should she even care? Isn’t this something that happens in third world countries or big cities like New York, Miami or Los Angeles? “North Carolina is in the top five states for slavery,” said Johnson. “That’s what people need to understand that it’s happening in your backyard. You can’t turn your back and ignore this.” Little more than a decade ago Johnson had never heard of human traf-

WATER – continued from front by breathing contaminated air. EPA guidelines allow 3.1 parts per billion in the drinking water. The treated water coming from the Reservoir is 2 parts per billion, well within safety margins. Earlier tests at the Groometown Road station, however, found 1,4-dioxane levels as high as 19 parts per billion. Jamestown is part owner of the Randleman Reservoir along with High Point, Greensboro, Archdale, Randleman and Randolph County. PTRWA’s testing at the station will be part of the regular testing schedule. It is believed some of the 1,4-dioxane comes from the site of the former Seaboard Chemical Corp., which declared bankruptcy in 1989. The site has a Jamestown address, but it is not within the town’s jurisdiction. The site is also surrounded by the former High Point landfill, which closed in 1993. Approximately 163 acres are involved. Seaboard officials were required to clean up the site, which operated as a recycler and hazard waste disposal company on Riverdale Drive. Seaboard had its share of problems while in operation from 1974-1989. The company was denied a special use operating permit by Guilford County in 1989 as a result of many years of hazardous waste violations, forcing the company into bankruptcy. It was reported the company also owed creditors $2 million at the time. Cleanup at the Seaboard site was scheduled to begin in February 1990 to remove dangerous chemicals and waste, including drums of potentially explosive ether. Chemicals were removed by the fall of that year, with tanks and equipment cleaning to continue for several months. In March, Guilford County officials complained they had not received a complete inven-

tory of the chemicals at Seaboard from state officials and Seaboard despite repeated requests. The county added that some “activities” either had not been performed at all, or were not completed. The state eventually took over the cleanup operation and a number of drums containing hazardous waste were returned to the companies that brought them to Seaboard for disposal. Area media reported in October 1990 that “chemicals from Seaboard Chemical Corp. in Jamestown likely will show up in the proposed Randleman reservoir.” (The Reservoir opened in 2010.) The article went on to predict that the concentration of the chemicals would not have an adverse impact on the water quality. It is apparent that the initial cleanup was not thorough enough. The News & Record reported in January 2005 that a new cleanup on the Seaboard site as well as the former High Point landfill site would start in the fall. (A later report stated July 2006). The article stated that “drums of solvent were spilled, dumped and buried on the site, and some toxins leaded from barrels into groundwater.” The cleanup plan included capturing contaminated groundwater in eight wells as well as allowing some water to basically filter through a stand of trees to reduce the harmful chemical. This cleanup process is ongoing. Treatment of the drinking water at the Randleman Reservoir reduces the resulting chemicals to an acceptable level. Note: 1,4-dioxane was incorrectly identified as 1,4-dioxine in the Feb. 10, 2016 Jamestown News. Carol Brooks can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownnews@north state.net.

ficking. A woman at her church had been offered a job, but was unable to take it. The lady asked the church missions pastor if he knew someone who might be interested. He recommended Johnson. The job was an eightmonth position, funded by a federal grant, working for an organization in High Point that was starting a network of emergency trafficking services. “I had no clue that modern day slavery and human trafficking even existed until they explained what the job was,” said Johnson. “I took two hours of training over the phone and then we were on a mission to interview potential victims. The whole time I was going to church with a young girl that was a victim of human trafficking and I had no clue.” A young Filipino girl working as a nanny brought her charges to Johnson’s church. The two became friends and the girl began sharing some of her circumstances. She was required to take care of the children as well as do all the cooking, cleaning and laundry, none of which she was paid for. She also was

verbally abused. Johnson remembers becoming angry at the situation and urged the girl to find another job. She didn’t understand how this could be happening and why the girl was so scared. The girl was not an illegal alien, but her trafficker was holding her documents. She was told money would be sent to her family and she could become a citizen, neither of which happened. “My heart was so broken for this issue how could I walk away,” said Johnson. “I prayed that God would show me what He wanted me to do.” So at age 60, with no nonprofit experience and a high school education, Johnson launched Triad Ladder of Hope. The organization’s four-step “ladder” works to raise awareness of the problem, to rescue victims, to restore rescued victims by providing necessary services, and to help victims move beyond the trauma into new life. “When I started, my desire was to step in and help the victims that were being rescued,” said Johnson. “But at the time, very few were being rescued.

Education had to be done before people could understand that this was going on.” Johnson began asking to speak at local churches, women’s groups, wherever anyone was willing to listen. She soon became a sought after speaker and continues to provide community and professional training on the issue. “It’s hard to stand and talk about 6-year-old girls being molested and sold for sex,” said Johnson. “They can be sold over and over again. They can be sold as many as 32 times a day and there are only 24 hours in a day. “It’s boys as well as girls and it’s adults also. You’ve got people in their 60s, 70s and 80s being exploited. Look at those people begging on the street, holding signs asking for work. It’s very possible those people are victims of trafficking.” Despite the fact that human trafficking is a growing crime, Triad Ladder of Hope is making a differ-

ence, especially through its educational efforts. “There are more people aware now,” said Johnson. “Each year, more and more people are talking about it. Law enforcement offers training for recruits. We have worked with social services and health departments providing training. There are hotels that are training their employees in what to watch for. “We are making a difference.” Next Week: How Triad Ladder of Hope is combating the problem.

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Lee Smith’s best story yet Lee Smith’s upcoming book, Dimestore: A Writer’s Life, tells her best story yet. After publishing 13 novels and numerous short stories that have won for her a passionately loyal group of fans and friends, the bestselling Hillsborough author has written a memoir, her first non-fiction book. It turns out that the real stories she tells are even better than the wonderful ones she has told in her novels and short stories. Her descriptions of the real characters in her life are, like her fictional characters, compelling. When Dimestore comes out in a few weeks, it will open the door for her many fans to know her as well or better than her good friends do.

by guest columnist D.G. Martin It will give clues about how growing up in a small Appalachian coal mining town and spending most of her life working, writing and raising a family here in North Carolina have influenced her writing. Readers will learn that her seemingly idyllic growing-up time, with devoted

parents and surrounded by loving members of an extended family, was full of challenges. In a chapter titled “Kindly Nervous,” Smith describes the “immense anguish” her beloved father felt during bouts of bipolar mania. But for Smith there was a bright side to her father’s condition, which he described as “kindly nervous.” When her father could not sleep, he would work all night long at the Dimestore he owned in downtown Grundy, Va. Smith accompanied him to the store and slept on a pallet under his desk. In the morning, he took her to breakfast. “How I loved those breakfasts. I got to have my scrambled eggs and my own big white

the 13-year-old Lee to have lunch with him. “Our luncheon,” she writes, “remains one of the most memorable occasions of my youth.” After a long formal lunch with lots of conversation about Lee’s love of literature, the doctor asked her if, because both parents were ill, she was worried about getting sick herself. Lee replied, “You mean, if I am going to go crazy, too.” When the doctor said, “yes,” Lee thought, “How did he know? Because that was exactly what I thought about, of course, all the time.” The doctor kindly assured her that he was a good doctor and she seemed to be “a very nice, normal girl, and I am here

to tell you that you can stop worrying about this right now. You will be fine.” She was fine, and, as she faced other challenges throughout her life, instead of complaining, she explains how such events can be blessings for an author. “This is an enviable life, to live in the terrain of one’s heart,” she writes. “Most writers don’t – can’t – do this. Most of us are always searching, through our work and in our lives: for meaning, for love, for home. Writing is about these things. And as writers, we cannot choose our truest material. But sometimes we are lucky enough to find it.” We, her readers, are so lucky she did.

her a note, but after I found it and showed her, she phoned grandma and my aunt crying about the mistake. Her need to tell everybody was humiliating. I hated my mother totally. It took a year, but I went to live with my daddy. We moved a lot. His wife didn’t want me around. If I write to him now, he returns it with errors corrected and recommended edits. Nothing pleases him. Mom remarried and has twin boys and wants to reconcile. It’s probably for the best, but how do I forgive what happened? A. You were hurt and angry about the misunderstanding with the note, but 10 years is an awfully long time to hold a grudge. You’ve described a good, strict but loving, mother. When the incident with the note happened, she was just recently divorced and probably extra emotional, and when one feels that way there is a great need to talk to people about upsetting things. You must also have been affected by your parents divorcing, so I’m sure emotions were run-

ning high. Perhaps from your more mature age of 19 you will be able to understand that and forgive her now. Can you try to imagine how your mother must have felt? Your life with your dad wasn’t your mother’s fault, but he has to share some of the blame for your unhappiness. You are also partly to blame because your 9-year-old self hated your mom and you made the choice to leave her. You’re intelligent and compassionate enough now to reconcile with her. You only get one mother in your life, so try to form a new relationship with her as the adult you now are. You are her first born and I think you will always hold a special place in her heart. One day, perhaps, you’ll have a family of your own, and I hope you’ll want your mom and your siblings to be a part of that. Best regards, Alexandra

Triad is Ground Zero for aviation By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer In the not too distant past, many people thought that we would soon discard automobiles, trains and airplanes for more “spaceage” travel such as vacuum tubes, space ships and, yes, even transporters to get around. In 2016, we still use the original forms of transportation, but one aspect is poised to, as it were, “take off” – aviation. More specifically, the companies that maintain the country’s large fleet of airplanes. Locally, Guilford Technical Community College is leading the way in training students to move into this growing field. Just read what GTTC’s website says about it: “The sky is the limit at GTCC! The aviation programs offered can get you behind the yoke of a 747 in two years or less. If flying is not your thing, GTCC also has programs that train you how to work on the engines of airplanes and how to configure the systems that operate the plane.” The school is so involved in the aviation field that the school’s president, Dr. Randy Parker, participated in a panel discussion Feb. 4 focused on the business of

DR. RANDY PARKER aviation in the Triad. The meeting was held, fittingly, at the Marriott Airport Hotel at Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI). Joining Parker were Kevin Baker, executive director of PTI; Kip Blakely, vice president of Customer and Government Relations at HAECO Americas at PTI; and Charlie Creech, president, North State Aviation at Smith Reynolds Airport in WinstonSalem. The panel was sponsored by Triad Business Journal. GTCC began its aviation training in 1969 with one program, Aviation Management Technology, adding an Avionics and Airframe and Powerplant mechanics

program in 1970. Today, GTCC offers training in four disciplines – Avionics Technology, Aviation Management, System Technology and Career Pilot Technology – at three multimillion dollar buildings on its Aviation Campus located at or adjacent to PTI. The school has had 558 students enrolled in aviation programs in fall 2014 and spring and summer 2015, the latest figures available. In addition, 215 students have been enrolled through continuing education programs. “With the growth and vision that this community in the Triad has, it’s (like being) Ground Zero for aviation in North Carolina,” Parker said at the meeting. GTCC’s Donald W. Cameron Campus is located about 5 1/2 miles north of the airport and is the site of several industrial labs. Parker said companies often bring their own equipment to the campus for training. Proximity to the airport aids in drawing companies to the Cameron Campus. Students at GTCC’s Aviation Academy at T.W. Andrews High School in High Point can earn up to two years of college credit and an associate college degree while in high school. They can get a head start as airframe and powerplant mechanics, avionics techni-

cians or pilots. Once they graduate high school, they lack only nine months of training before becoming FAA certified. Several 11th-graders job shadow workers at HAECO Americas – which specializes in aircraft engineering and interiors – once a week for five weeks to learn more about their specialty. Creech is a great supporter of training at community colleges. “Right now, our industry is a $63 billion dollar industry globally,” Creech said. “It’s getting ready to go to an $85 billion industry by 2020. It will be a $100 billion industry by 2025. “I can’t tell you all how wonderful it is to live in North Carolina. The community college system in this state is second to none. They have been very, very helpful to us.” “We need to have the workforce (in aviation),” Baker said. “There are maybe 20 cities in the whole U.S. that have the kind of depth of staff that we have. That puts us in a really good spot. To have the crown jewel of GTCC sitting right on our campus and creating those employees, it’s amazing.” Baker said the industry has changed since he replaced Jamestown’s Ted Johnson as the airport’s executive director in 2010.

The airport now covers over 600 acres. A new bridge over Bryan Boulevard – set to open in 2017 – will open up more than 600 additional acres for expansion north of the present airport campus with the potential of drawing large-scale equipment manufacturers. “We must have land for any company that wants to come,” Baker said. He added that as the airport and its complementary businesses grow, out-of-state visitors will come to the area to train, thus adding to the Triad’s economic base. He pointed out that in December, Honda Aircraft – with world headquarters in Greensboro – began delivering locallymanufactured HondaJets to customers, and that HondaJet pilots are coming to PTI for training. Representatives from Smith Reynolds Airport in WinstonSalem and Burlington Airport also spoke at the Feb. 4 meeting, enforcing the view that what is good for GTCC aviation and PTI is good for the entire area. “We are an aviation community,” Parker said. “We want people to think the Triad.”

Airport History From humble beginnings in the 1920s, Piedmont Triad International Airport has grown to become an East Coast transportation hub situated at the heart of the Triad economy – a major economic driver, a partner with local businesses and the source for convenient travel wherever people want to go. 1927 – Eight miles west of Greensboro, the airport began as a pasture labeled by noted racing pilot Captain Roscoe Turner as “the best landing field in the South.” The Tri-City Airport’s Lindley Field formally opened May 28. In July, the first passenger flew from the airport in a chartered plane to New York City. 1928 – Lindley Field became a stop on the eastern mail route. Pitcairn Aviation, the government’s airmail carrier, made the first delivery of air mail in North Carolina on May 1 at 8:15 p.m. Pilot Sid Malloy landed with two incoming bags of mail and took on three sacks of mail for his next stop, Atlanta. 1930 – Pitcairn Aviation became Eastern Air Transport and launches North Carolina’s first passenger service from the Triad. In 1935 Lindley Field was closed by order of the US Department of Commerce because of two near crashes. It reopened in 1937 with two new paved 2,500-foot runways and a passenger terminal. 1941 – The GreensboroHigh Point Airport Authority was created by the North Carolina General Assembly to own, operate and manage the airport in Guilford County. On April 22, 1942, the Airport Authority held its inaugural meeting. Greensboro department store executive Joseph T. Martin was elected the Authority’s first chairman. High Point resident R.T. Amos became Vice Chairman and Caesar Cone of Greensboro began a 26year career as Secretary. In the 1940s, the US

Army Air Corps assumed control of the airport for the duration of World War II. The airport was a hub for the Overseas Replacement Depot (ORD), a refueling station and a training site for fighter and bomber pilots. The Army built a second steel hangar and a control tower. 1950s – A decade of growth and planning set the precedent for strategic development of the regional airport. Significantly, the Authority purchased more than 900 acres of land around the airport to save it from other development. Runways were again lengthened to accommodate newer aircraft, a new air traffic control tower was constructed and an instrument landing system was installed. In 1958 a new 34,000-square-foot terminal opened, featuring aircraft gates, a restaurant, bank, operations office and counters for tickets and rental cars. 1967 – The Airport hired Roger Sekadlo, as its first executive director – a post he would hold for 20 years. Under his guidance, the Airport Authority adopted a dramatic $63 million Master Plan, a package of dramatic changes that required the relocation of the entire airport facility to the northwest area of the airport’s property, as well as runway improvements, design of a new terminal and expanded general aviation and cargo areas. 1970s – The airport gained greater prominence on the East Coast offering passenger service from Delta, Piedmont, United and Eastern Airlines. Cargo carriers, including the postal service, textile manufacturers and Federal Express – a new overnight letter and package delivery service – were shipping tons of freight each year. General aviation expands, with Air Service investing in a new 10-acre site and the arrival of newcomer Atlantic Aero. 1972 – Ten years after joining the Airport Authori-

ty, Stanley Frank was elected chairman – a position he would occupy for 19 years. Frank had quickly become a presence at the airport after moving to Greensboro in 1936, logging thousands of miles as a private pilot. His vision of the airport and its role in the Triad economy would drive the airport’s growth and planning for nearly three decades. 1982 – Exponential growth was becoming familiar to the Airport. That year saw the opening of a new passenger terminal – the heart of today’s terminal – and the airport’s main runway was extended to 10,000 feet, making it the longest in the state. Piedmont Airlines, the largest carrier serving the Triad, constructed a major maintenance facility. The following year, the Marriott opened a $16 million, 300room hotel on the airport property. 1990 – TIMCO Aviation Services opens its world headquarters at PTI. Over the following two decades, the company would grow into one of the world’s largest independent aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) providers. TIMCO supports leading global airlines, governments and aircraft leasing companies with comprehensive, individually-tailored aircraft care services, employing nearly 3,000 people in facilities at a number of airports across the country. 1993 – The Airport Authority appointed Edward A. “Ted” Johnson executive director of PTI. First hired by the airport in 1968, Johnson held a number of posts, including that of director of development. Johnson knew the airport and its carriers and partners like no one else. On his watch, PTI saw dramatic change in air service and investment at the airport. Possibly Johnson’s most important contribution was the successful recruitment of the FedEx mid-Atlantic sorting facility to PTI

which included the construction of a third runway at the airport. Combined, these two accomplishments positioned PTI as the catalyst for regional growth. 1998 – FedEx Corporation announces its intentions to build a mid-Atlantic hub at PTI, one of only five FedEx hubs in the country. In addition to the hub, the project would include the construction of a parallel, 9,000-foot runway, the construction of new roads around the airport and the construction of a new cloverleaf airport entrance, at a total cost of nearly $500 million. 2000 – PTI continues to play a central role in regional growth. Guilford Technical Community College Aviation Center at PTI expanded its training program for airline mechanics, boosted with a $250,000 gift from Tom Davis. 2005 – Comair selected PTI for its Southeastern Maintenance Facility location, which opened in 2006. 2006 – The airport opens an expansion to the North Concourse, which adds another 40,000 square feet to the terminal and brings the number of gates to 25. The airport also opens a 43,000 square-foot expansion to the main terminal to accommodate security gates at the north and south concourse.

h

2007 – Honda Aircraft Company selects PTI as its global headquarters. In subsequent years, Honda Aircraft Company would expand the campus to include administrative offices, its research and development center, its manufacturing center and the site of a major repair and maintenance facility, employing 1,000 people at these facilities on the airport campus. Allegiant Airlines begins low-fare service to Florida destinations, eventually establishing itself a fixture at the airport for low-fare service. 2009 – FedEx opens its mid-Atlantic Hub at the Airport, establishing PTI as a key link in the company’s national overnight delivery system. The FedEx midAtlantic Hub, located on a 175-acre site at the airport, consists of seven buildings, a fuel farm and an aircraft ramp with eleven gates. The 475,000-square-foot sort building is the center point of the facility and is designed to handle 24,000 packages per hour with provisions in place to expand to 48,000 in the future. 2010 – The airport opens a 9,000-foot parallel runway, which allows simultaneous aircraft take-offs and landings at the airport for the first time, and opens new opportunities for airside development at the

airport. Ted Johnson retires after 17 years as the airport’s executive director and a career at the airport that started in 1968. Kevin Baker is tapped to succeed Johnson as executive director. The airport unveils an ambitious Master Plan Update that includes new facilities such as an improved Control Tower and establishes the airport as a key aerospace center on the East Coast. The Master Plan reveals a vision to connect the airport to existing property by constructing a taxiway bridge over I-73 and for expanding the airport’s reach by acquiring property northwest of the airport. 2011 – The airport begins a major interior renovation project to provide passengers with a superior airport experience. The renovation includes the installation of free wireless Internet and charging stations for passenger devices, and numerous interactive kiosks guiding passengers to ground transportation and nearby accommodations and restaurants. 2013 – Frontier Airlines based in Denver, Co., begins PTI’s first flights to Denver. The airline announces non-stop service to Orlando, Fla., and Denver.

My real life has been pretty normal. I grew up, got married, had children, taught school and now work in this small community library. I’ve never been in a coma, nor felt helpless for months at a time, but I read a book called Still Life, by Joy Fielding. The victim of a hit and run “accident” is in a coma. She can hear what’s being said but can’t respond in any way. She learns that it may not have been an accident and that someone she loves attempted her murder. We have experiences in books that we won’t get in real life, thank goodness. Our book club just discussed The Boy in The Suitcase, by Lene

Compassion is defined as sincerely caring about others, an emotional response to the suffering of others that motivates a desire to help and going out of your way to help the physical, spiritual or emotional hurts of another. Does she turn him over to the police or try to find his family? Most of the discussion centered on why he was in the suitcase, but I kept thinking, “What would I do?” Call the police, but maybe people think differently in another country. In real life, I’ve never been an orphan, but Christina Kline gives insight into that experience in Orphan Train. I’ve never been an alcoholic or married to a murderer, but The Girl on The Train lets me see what that would be like. Choosing the right educational path By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer When Zoe Kelley thinks about her upcoming graduation in the spring, she has reason to be doubly excited. Not only will she be getting her high school diploma, she also will have gained two years of college education in the process. Kelley is among 42 students in the first graduating class of the Guilford County Schools STEM Early College at North Carolina A&T University. She began the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) program with its first freshman class in 2012. Each year, an additional grade level was added. As freshmen and sophomores, students take all honors and AP classes. Juniors and seniors are registered as full-time college students taking between 12-15 credit hours each semester. “Ideally, you can have 60 credit hours at the end of your senior year,” Kelley said. Students must apply to become part of the STEM Early College and are selected based on their grades, test scores, recommendations and written essays. “This year we have added an interview component to the application,” said Jamisa Williams, principal of STEM Early College. “We want to look at the whole picture for each student. Our school is always in the public eye and we need students who are good at communication as well as academics.” Before 2012, Guilford County Schools had only one early college program at Guilford College. The one at A&T is specific to STEM education. “Research has show that the United States is falling

It also enables students to get two years of college credit for free, and there is something attractive about being a high school student on a college campus.” The STEM Early College is housed in Smith Hall, but the upperclassmen have access to any other classes offered to the college students. STEM students can choose one of three pathways including engineering, bio medical science, or renewed energy and sustainability. Although the upperclassmen are taking classes under college professors, the GCS system has counselors and academic advisors for all four high school grade levels to help students be successful. A few students, however, find the STEM program is not one they wish to con-

tinue. Since the school’s inception, it has lost about 10 percent of students who choose to return to their home high schools. “The workload is a lot for high school students,” Williams acknowledged. They do two to three times more school work on a weekly basis to study and prepare for classes. To be a college student at age 16 takes a great deal of maturity and time management skills. “These students are highly competitive and the majority get into other colleges that meet their long-term needs. As STEM graduates they have the ability to make decisions about their future before everyone else.” Williams noted that Kelley is a good representative of what the STEM program is all about, saying that she is well rounded and academically advanced. Kelley, who is president of the STEM Early College student body, feels she took a risk by deciding to attend early college, but it is a risk she is very glad she took. “I was always interested in math and science in middle school,” she said. “In early college, they push

GCS hosts public forums The Guilford County Board of Education will hold public forums in February and March to hear what the community has to say about two different topics: the superintendent search and school resource officers (SROs). The board will discuss what the community would like to see in its next superintendent. All forums will start at 7 p.m. and are scheduled for: • Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Northern High Auditorium, 7101 Spencer Dixon Road, Greensboro. • Thursday, March 10 at Southeast High Auditorium, 4530 Southeast School Road, Greensboro. • Monday, March 21 at Dudley High Auditorium, 1200 Lincoln Street, Greensboro. Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green’s last day with GCS will be March 18, before he takes on his new role as executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. The board hopes to have a new superintendent selected before the 2016-17 school year begins. Nora Carr, chief of staff, and Terrence Young, chief information officer, were selected as co-interim superintendents until a permanent replacement is found.

The board will also listen to the community’s thoughts on the role of SROs in schools with two separate meetings. Both forums will start at 7 p.m. and are scheduled for: • Monday, Feb. 29 at Penn-Griffin School for the Arts Auditorium, 825 Washington Street, High Point. • Thursday, March 3 at Grimsley High Auditorium, 801 Westover Terrace, Greensboro The forums will be held in addition to regularly scheduled board meetings which are Feb. 25, March 8 and March 24. Anyone wishing to speak at any of the forums is invited to do so and can sign up at the event or by calling (336) 3708100 any time before 5 p.m. the day of the forum. In addition to input received from the surveys, public forums and public comment, written statements from any local groups or organizations may be submitted to Allison Schafer via mail at NCSBA, P.O. Box 97877, Raleigh, NC 27624, via email at aschafer@ncsba. org, or via fax at 919-841-4020. These statements should be received no later than March 16.

As I See It

by Shirley Adkins, Womack Publishing, Star Tribune “I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear; but now mine eyes seeth Thee.” (Job 42:5) When I read this verse, I thought about how often we hear and hear and hear about God and all His wonders, gifts, mercies and forgiveness, but never see Him. Hearing the words isn’t enough. We need to see Him. Alrighty, then. How do we see Someone who isn’t physically visible? For one thing, we must want to see Him, then we have to look for Him. No you won’t see a big, longhaired, white bearded person with a barrel voice booming at you. But, you might see a smile on a strangers’ face or a new calf romping in the pasture. You might see a rainbow in the sky or receive an unexpected gift in the mail. An answered prayer, just missing that deer that jumped in front of your car, a warm hug from a friend when you’re in need of it. These are all God’s love reaching out to you. My Sunday School class has been learning a Bible verse a week. The first thing we do is go over that verse together and talk about what it actually means. Memorizing words isn’t the object. We want these verses to find their way into our hearts and become part of our daily lives. God is helping us do this. As we learn His words, we are making Him part of our lives. As a result, we are seeing Him every day. “I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear; but now mine eyes seeth Thee,” Job said. This man had been through more tragedy in a short time than 10 people go through in a lifetime put together. But, he came out of it not just hearing, but seeing with brand new eyes. What will it take for us to see God?

you as hard and fast as they can. I would absolutely not be where I am without my experiences at early college.” Guilford County’s Magnet and Choice Schools programs, along with the insight of her parents, Mark and Amber Kelley, has allowed all of Kelley’s education to be selected to her best advantage. In fourth grade, she moved from her elementary school in High Point to Florence Elementary School in Jamestown. While there she participated in the school’s clown club and continues to serve as a mentor for students in the club. She attended Kernodle Middle School, another step Kelley feels prepared her for admission to the STEM Early College. As a high school freshman on the campus of A&T, Kelley and five other students participated in the NASA Student Space Flight Experiment Program (SSEP). The group sent an experiment to the Space Station. As a sophomore, Kelley took part in the Real World Design Challenge, a national aeronautical competi-

tion. They competed at the state and national levels. She won a National Merit Award for her involvement in that program. “These were extra curriculum opportunities,” Kelley explained. “High Point Central would have been my home high school, so I was also able to participate as a member of its marching band for four years. I have always enjoyed music and that was relaxing to me. “It helped me maintain my sanity, she added with a smile. “Many STEM students are involved in sports or other activities at their home schools.” In addition, Kelley participated for three years in the High Point Rowing Club, which practices in Jamestown. Kelley has received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. She likes the idea of studying computer science at the naval academy. “It is a big commitment, but a win-win situation,” she said. “You get to receive a good education and better yourself, and you get to serve your country. But I am taking my parents’ advice and looking at all my options before

deciding where to go.” Kelley’s younger brother and sister are currently attending the N.C. Leadership Academy in Kernersville. “Wherever we go to school, it is someplace that is pushing us,” Kelley said. “As former elementary school counselors, our parents have a lot of insight of the way the education system works and it helps them know where we should be. They are pretty great parents.” Kelley is more than satisfied with the decisions her parents made that helped her be on her current educational path. She recommends the STEM Early College to anyone who truly wants to be there. “If you are driven and want to move forward, it is absolutely the place to be,” she said. “I am 100 percent grateful for my opportunity.” To learn more about the STEM Early College, check the website http:// stemec.gcsnc.com.

“Get Out and Get Active” during National Heart Month

The High Point Parks & Recreation Department, Go Out for a Run (GO FAR) and The Foundation for a Healthy High Point want everyone in the community, from children to senior adults, to “Get Out and Get Active” during National Heart Month by walking the healthy maps around the city. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Communities, health professionals and families can work together to create opportunities for people

to become more physically active and make healthier choices. Organizations like GO FAR teach children in our community about character building, nutrition and goal setting. In High Point/Jamestown there are nine options for the public to choose from. Locations include: Allen Jay Recreation Center, 1073 East Springfield Road, High Point Deep River Recreation Center, 1529 Skeet Club Road, High Point High Point Athletic Complex, 2920 School Park Road, High Point High Point City Lake Park, 602 West Main Street, Jamestown Morehead Recreation Center, 101 Price Street, High Point Oakview Recreation Center, 503 James Road,

JMS wrestling ends season with 12-2 record The Jamestown Middle wrestling team recently concluded a very successful season with a 69-15 win over rival Southwest Middle. The win gave the Tigers an outstanding 12-2 dual meet record. The Tigers also finished in second place in the Guilford County wrestling tournament held on Feb. 6. The Tigers had 11 wrestlers earn a medal. Finishing in third place were Anthony Orfanedes, Corey Womack and Cameron Young. Second place winners were Wesley Misenheimer, Logan Smith, John Fowles and Nick Glasgow.

Champions were Mike Gipp, Josiah Cherry, Carlos Diaz, Ernest McCloud and Ahmad Smith. The Tigers also had some very impressive season records as Cherry (17-0), Gipp (12-0) and Smith (17-0) all finished undefeated. McCloud and Diaz both finished 16-1. The Tigers also had many impressive seventh graders and Coach Curt Switalski is very optimistic about next year’s team.

Jumpers endure cold water to raise funds for Special Olympics

By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer If participants in last year’s High Point Polar Plunge thought the water in the outdoor pool at the Sportscenter Athletic Club

was a bit nippy, this year’s water and outdoor temperatures were even lower. The water was actually warmer than the air, clocking in at 38 degrees compared to a cold 34 degrees – even less when counting a wind chill factor. Among the jumpers were

members of Tiger Rock Martial Arts, which included students, parents and siblings. This was the third Polar Plunge sponsored by the High Point Police Department to raise funds for Special Olympics. “Our guys participated in other

Polar Plunges for about seven years, but decided to have our own,” explained Lt. Lee Lanier, Polar Plunge coordinator for the High Point Police Department, during an interview last year. After their plunge, participants used the athletic club’s indoor

SWG ends season with one loss Submitted by GREG VLAZNY, Southwest Guilford The Cowboys were in unfamiliar territory to close out the regular season on Feb. 12 – trying to bounce back after a loss for the first time this season. Despite the loss, the Cowboys could still clinch at least a share of the Piedmont Triad Conference title for the fourth consecutive season with a victory tonight at High Point Central. In the previous game between these conference foes, both teams were coming out of weather cancellations and neither team was able to prepare. In the end, the Cowboys were too

talented and deep for the Bison. This time around, both teams are coming off of losses and trying to end the regular season with a positive win. The game opened sloppy with neither team able to put the ball in the basket until the Cowboys got on the board with two free throws at the 5:30 mark. Stifling defense by the Cowboys held the Bison scoreless for the entire opening frame. However, uncharacteristic sloppy play and missed open looks only made the tally 8-0 at quarter’s end. The Cowboys continued to hold the Bison off the scoreboard until a basket was made a minute into

the second quarter to make it 10-2. A Southwest 9-0 spurt pushed the game out until some free throws stopped the bleeding for Central. The margin got to 27-8 until the Bison ended the half on a 4-0 spurt taking the tally to 27-12 headed into the break. The third quarter was when Southwest finally got into a rhythm on both sides of the ball and got the lead to 50-20 until a late 3-pointer by Central closed the frame at 50-23. The final frame was a frantic and sloppy battle as Southwest’s bench scrapped until the final horn at 66-47. With the win, Southwest clinches at least a share of

the regular season championship for the fourth straight year. Central was led by Raekwon Blocker with 12 points. Southwest was paced by Orlando Smith with (17), Kaymon Mitchell (13), Kameron Langley (11) and Kobe Langley with (10).
