Town looks to update ordinances

Jordan Johnson was excited to learn that she had won a creative writing contest and her story would be made into an opera.

Urban chickens. Sounds like a good name for a rock band, doesn’t it? But in Jamestown’s case, it’s something that the Planning Board is considering regulating – chickens within residential districts, that is. Planning Director Matthew Johnson presented five items to the Board for discussion at its Feb. 13 meeting: urban chickens, tattoo parlors, winery/distillery/brewery land uses, fence materials (chain link in residential areas) and parking of oversize commercial vehicles in residentially-zoned areas. All items relate to an update to the town’s Land Development Ordinance. Johnson said he has been contacted about several of these topics and expects other questions to arise in the future. Some items are not addressed in the LDO and some need clarification. After some lighthearted discussion, the Planning Board Carol Brooks can be reached at 336agreed that these were areas that could 841-4933 or jamestownnews@northstate. cause concern and asked Johnson to do also was able to attend a net. further research and present his report at rehearsal for it. “At the performance they announced that I had written the story, then told the name of the person who had turned it into the opera,” Johnson explained. Although Johnson enjoyed writing this story and creating a recent nonfiction report on Harriet Tubman, she admits she is much more interested in art, science and math. As a fifth grader, she is eligible to enter the contest again this spring, but is not sure if she will. Of course, she has no way of knowing if she would win a second time, she just thinks others should have the opportunity. (Photo/Jane E. She then weaved Jordan Johnson, a student at Florence Elementary School, watched as a story she had written unfolded live on stage, performed by members of the Greensboro Opera. The performance was the prize for a creative writing contest open to fourth and fifth graders in Guilford County. Each spring, students have the opportunity to submit a story and one is selected to become a short operetta during the opera company’s annual performance for area schools. Johnson’s story, “The Stolen Voice,” was this year’s winner. “My friend Trinity talked me into entering,” Johnson said. “We were both in the fourth grade last year and she heard about the contest from the music teacher. I just found out I had won a few weeks ago when Ms. Williamson, the music teacher, got a letter about it and told me. I was really surprised.” To write the story, Johnson put her random

the plot together, adding the glamor of a big house (mansion), the mystery behind the main character – Brittney – having her voice stolen and how it was found and returned to its rightful owner. “I just used my imagination,” Johnson said. “It starts when Brittney attends a sleepover at a friend’s house. While all the girls are singing, Brittney starts to sound like a chicken. The girls went into the woods to look for her voice and found that trolls were the ones who had stolen it. “Somebody had to do it,” she added with a smile. Johnson’s story is definitely not a tragedy as it ends happily with Brittney’s voice restored. Because the school did not want parental guidance for the contest, Johnson’s parents, Tiffany and Christopher Sifford, did not realize she had entered it. But she did let her friend Trinity critique her work. Not only did Johnson get to see the opera performed for the students, she

How the Mendenhall family helped the slaves when she tried to take them anywhere, either by the Confederates or the Federals, so she just kept them in Jamestown. They were free when the surrender happened.” “(The Mendenhalls) did what they had to do,” Browning said. “George knew from the get-go what he was planning to do. I don’t think there is any question he thought he knew exactly what would work. “He himself never really said much about it, but that, to me, is what George C. Mendenhall really was.”

By CAROL BROOKS Editor George Cameron Mendenhall was disowned from Deep River Meeting in January 1825. In 1824 he had married Eliza Dunn and part of her dowry included about 25 slaves, mostly girls. The Quaker was disowned because Quakers did not believe in owning slaves. In a talk to the High Point Museum Guild on Feb. 15, Jamestown historian Mary Browning spoke about Mendenhall and his efforts to free these – and other – slaves. “Oddly enough, the Quakers have the most to tell us about slavery,” Browning said. Many Quaker records under the care of the North Carolina Friends Historical Society contain references to slavery. George C. Mendenhall inherited the property of his grandfather James Mendenhall, who had a house and mills along Penny Road, now under the waters of Koonce City Lake. “Shawn Rogers of the Mendenhall Homeplace found a record that said Eliza Dunn had deeded to the (N.C.) Manumission Society two or three slaves for them to own, then transport to freedom when possible,” Browning said. “That’s what the Manumission Society was in the business of doing, transport slaves (to free states or other countries.)

“The Society was unable to take the slaves because they said Eliza was not of age. “This was very interesting,” Browning said. “She wasn’t a Quaker, she was Methodist-Episcopal, but she decided to have these slaves emancipated.” Eliza died following childbirth in 1825, leaving George to raise their son, James Ruffin Mendenhall. The following year, George, a birthright Quaker, went to Montgomery County and purchased a slave, Sally, and her baby daughter Miranda. The bill of sale states that two men had forced the sale in the county Superior Court, but

the circumstances were unclear. It is not known if Eliza brought her slaves with her when she came to live with George in Jamestown but Browning speculated the slaves did come to Jamestown. She suggested that Sally and Miranda, the slaves George had purchased, might have been related to Eliza’s slaves. Eliza’s will stipulated that the slaves be released, and George might have been trying to unite a family with the purchase. George dragged his feet on freeing the slaves until his marriage to Delphina Gardner in 1832, as staunch a Quaker as ever

lived. Delphina’s mother gave permission only after George agreed to emancipate the slaves. The couple made plans to transport the slaves to the free state of Ohio, but Delphina first taught them to read and write their names, believing the slaves needed to learn how to live independently to survive after emancipation, even the elderly ones. Teaching slaves to read and write was against the law. It is believed that Delphina and George had a hand in emancipating around 50 slaves, often accompanying them on their journey to Ohio. Sally and Miranda were part of that emancipa-

tion effort. George drowned in the Uwharrie River in 1860 but left a detailed will, giving the remaining slaves to Delphina. As tensions were rising leading up to the Civil War, she immediately put together a group of around 15 slaves for a new trip to freedom. She wrote in 1861, “I expect to go west with (George’s) emancipated servants about the 15th of next month and be absent some 5 or 6 weeks.” Browning said that left about 12 young men on the Mendenhall land in Jamestown. “(Delphina) was sure they would be conscripted

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A ‘new’ barbecue holiday … from 1766 How about a new holiday that would support North Carolina’s “First in Freedom” slogan and, at the same time, call attention to our pride in our distinctive favorite food: barbecue? Got your attention? The Campaign for Real Barbecue, an organization led by barbecue gurus John Shelton Reed and Dan Levine, proposes to celebrate a “Wilmington Barbecue” holiday on the fourth Monday of February. Reed and Levine usually use their platform to extol the virtues of “real” North Carolina barbecue, which is meat cooked slowly over wood coals. “When so-called barbecue is cooked over gas flames,” Reed told me, “I can smell the gas when I eat the meat.” But Reed and Levine also educate us about the connection between politics and barbecue. Their search for such connections took them all the way back to late February of 1766 when “the Royal Governor of North Carolina, William Tryon, attempted to win the New Hanover militia’s good will by treating them to a barbecue. He did not succeed:

citizens of Wilmington threw the barbecued ox in the river and poured out the beer. (This was not an early expression of North Carolinians’ preference for pork; they were upset about the Stamp Act.)” Reed and Levine explain that this “expression” of discontent with British authority came seven years before “the Boston Tea Party of 1773, when some rowdy New Englanders threw boxes of tea in Boston harbor to protest a British tax.” They argue that the Wilmington event was not only “seven years earlier than the Tea Party, its story is much more colorful. While the Tea Party offers only a pitiful attempt to

avoid the blame by dressing up as Mohawk Indians, the barbecue story involves a stand-off between the local militia and the British Navy, a conflict between the Governor and the courts, a duel to the death, and a suicide by disembowelment.” Reed and Levine ask why the Boston Tea Party has gotten all the attention, and they answer, that it is a matter of superior publicity by publishers located in the Northeast states. “And the regional disparity in public relations skill persists to this day: Boston has a Tea Party museum entirely devoted to ‘the event that lead [sic] to an American Revolution!’ while the Barbecue has been almost entirely forgotten, even in Wilmington.” Reed and Levine found their facts in The history of North Carolina from the Earliest Period published in 1829: “In the latter part of the month of February, there being a general muster in the town of Wilmington, the governor, with a view to please the militia, caused an ox to be barbecued and had a few barrels of beer

unheaded; but the people, displeased with his endeavors to counteract their opposition to the stamp act, threw the roasted ox into the river and spilled the beer on the ground.” The disorder continued, reminding us that our current president is not the first political leader to lambaste judges. Governor Tryon accused the chief justice of favoring a defendant charged with participating in a fatal duel arising out of the disturbances. The chief justice was so devastated that he “fired a pistol in his own mouth; the fire not proving mortal, he took out his pen-knife and, ripping open his belly, drew out part of his entrails and soon after expired.” Back to the present. So far, there has been no official action on the proposed Wilmington Barbecue Holiday. But there is no stopping us from taking matters into our own hands, gathering at our favorite barbecue eateries on Monday, and raising our glasses of sweet iced tea to the people in Wilmington who stood up to British oppression long before the Boston Tea Party.

By contrast, travel rewards programs often have tiers, different levels of membership with varying benefits depending on how often you travel or how much you spend. While the basic tier may offer discounted hotel rates or free Wi-Fi, the higher tiers might come with free room upgrades (including to coveted suites) and guaranteed early check-in and late check-out. Recognize why companies might have rewards programs. When you’re a big fan of a company or product, getting rewarded for your loyalty can be great. After all, it’s a free perk if you were going to make the purchase anyway. But try not to get too attached to a particular company or product based solely on the rewards program. Buying something simply because you get a discount as a member, or making a purchase “for the points,” might be a waste. You could find yourself with a pantry full of products that are slowly going

bad, or paying more for a trip because you didn’t comparison shop the offerings from other airlines or hotel chains. Joining a rewards program could lead to overspending if you’re not careful. Recognizing that the programs could be designed to get you to spend more, and more often, can help you refrain from overspending. Here are a few additional ways to make sure you maximize your benefits. Don’t double-count your savings. You’re tricking yourself if you consider the rewards points from a retailer’s program as savings when making a purchase and then consider the same points as savings (again) when you redeem them for store credit. Count the rewards once, or don’t make them part of your buying decision at all. Keep your programs organized. Points in some programs expire if you don’t use them within a specified period or have recent account activity. You could use a website, app or spreadsheet to help track your accounts, how many points or miles you’ve earned and when they expire. Another way to avoid

overspending is to consider your net cost when comparison shopping. To do this, you’ll need a list of the dollar value of each programs’ rewards points. You could take a shortcut and copy the values other enthusiasts place on each program’s points. Or, you could make estimates of your own based on trips or purchases you regularly make. Now you’ll know when 1,000 points are worth $1 or $10 and can plan your purchases accordingly. In the end, you want to be able to make as close to an apples-to-apples comparison as possible, inclusive of the value you place on the rewards. Bottom line: Consumer rewards programs offer a wide variety of benefits, including exclusive savings and complimentary perks. While it’s often free to join the programs, and you could get rewarded for doing so, keep the big picture in mind and be careful about letting your membership lead to unnecessary purchases. Make the most of your rewards program membership By NATHANIEL SILLIN

I’m often intrigued and sometimes inspired by stories of people traveling the world using points and miles. There’s a wellknown (within certain circles, at least) man who earned over a million airline miles by purchasing more than $3,000 worth of pudding during a special promotion in 1999. Or, you might have heard about people using coupons during a grocery store’s membership-only sale to get food and household products for free. While I might not be as enthusiastic as some world travelers, or as extreme as some couponers, I do see the benefit in a program that’s free to join and offers you potentially money-saving perks. However, I also know it’s important not to get so caught up that I wind up spending more money than I would otherwise. As a friend of mine loved to say, “never spend a dollar to save a nickel.” The perks of membership. There are many loyalty or rewards programs to choose from and the rules and benefits can vary. For example, a grocer’s program might offer the

Group fights cancer with creativity By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer Ginger McCall sits quietly wielding her paintbrush carefully over the canvas. She has chosen a bright rose as the background color surrounding one of four hearts she will transform into a special Valentine’s display. She isn’t quite ready to join in all the chatter and laughter swirling around as others in the room prepare their own canvases. She is ready, however, to take back control of her life and joining this group is the first step. “I finished radiation last week,” said the cancer patient, “and I decided I was going to get involved in some of the support groups.” The group McCall chose is a painting class sponsored by Wine and Design, an art studio that provides stepby-step instructions on replicating featured paintings in a fun, social setting. This group meets the last Friday of each month, excluding May, June and July, in the Hayworth Cancer Center at High Point Regional UNC Health Care. Jenny Ragsdale started the group about five years ago. She had opened a Wine and Design franchise

in Jamestown a year earlier. She was looking for a way to honor her late mother-in-law Katherine Ragsdale when she decided to donate painting classes to the Cancer Center. “It’s really a friendship group,” said Ragsdale. “It’s a lot of fun.” Members of the group, which includes those currently undergoing treatment, those in remission and friends and family members, create a new piece of art each month. All materials for the paintings, as well as snacks, are donated, thanks to a partnership with the Pink Ribbon Luncheon. The annual luncheon is a fundraiser for Hayworth Cancer Center’s Pink Ribbon Program, which is designed to enhance the lives of women and men newly diagnosed with cancer. In May, the group foregoes its usual painting time and attends the Pink Ribbon Luncheon. One year, the canvases created by group members were used as part of the décor for the event. Although those participating come and go, and sometimes the numbers are small, the group offers a chance to forget about fighting the disease. Daisy McCorkle was diagnosed with colon and

Sitting in the hospital room at that moment, she didn’t know if she had 10 minutes of life left, let alone 10 years. “This group doesn’t focus on what you are going through, but puts your mind on creativity,” said McCorkle. “You still have a life, you can still do things. You are still able to create. You are not the cancer, but are still a person. Sometimes people forget that. “And you make lifelong friends.” McCorkle and Bobbie Bibeau became friends while going through chemotherapy together. Their friendship continues with painting class as well as other activities, like bowling and volunteering. “I like the fellowship of being with people that have gone through the same thing I have,” said Bibeau. “I like helping other survivors.” Bibeau has invited sever-

al people to join the group, including her daughter Cheryl Todd, a two-time cancer survivor. “Painting takes your mind off other things,” said Todd. “You leave the world outside the door.” Although she has not experienced what these women have, Ragsdale appreciates their strength and courage in fighting the battle against cancer. “It is so rewarding for me,” said Ragsdale. “It also is very special that my husband, George, says it means so much to him that I would do this to honor his mother.” The next meeting of the painting support group is Feb. 24 at 9 a.m. in the resource room of Hayworth Cancer Center at High Point Regional UNC Health Care. The best way to get calcium

By LEANNE ELY Dinner Diva When a woman is in her prime, she is more likely to think about keeping in shape and maintaining her figure than broken hips and osteoporosis. However, not thinking about preserving bone health at this age is a big mistake because that’s when something can be done to maintain healthy bone mass. Young women build bone mass until about 25, and after that, it’s all about maintaining that bone mass. The biggest factor in prevention of osteoporosis is, of course, a calcium-rich diet. Milk products, grains, fresh fruits and vegetables all contain some level of calcium with dairy being the kingpin of calcium. The issue of eating a diet rich in calcium is absorption and while supplements are helpful, food is best. But if you are looking at getting a supplement, the best supplemental calcium to buy will have magnesium in it, with a 3-to-1 ratio of calcium to magnesium for optimal absorption. But back to food. Oxalic acid, present in healthy foods such as spinach and oatmeal, actually blocks calcium absorption. And even though these foods themselves are rich in calcium, the availability of

that calcium isn’t viable because of the presence of oxalic acid. That doesn’t mean spinach and oatmeal should be stricken from our diets – we just need to understand that the calcium we think we’re getting from these sources is severely limited because of the oxalic acid (and we shouldn’t eat too much of them, either). Chocolate’s also rather high in oxalic acid – not that anyone may have been looking to chocolate to fulfill her calcium requirements. Another way we lose out on calcium absorption is through consumption of carbonated beverages. Phosphorus, which is naturally present in any drink with carbonation, hinders absorption of calcium as well. It may not be necessary to completely abstain from all soda drinking, but it is a good idea to limit the amount consumed and certainly to not drink it daily. In the past few years, it has been brought to light that weight-bearing exercise helps with calcium absorption. For so long, so many women have relied heavily on aerobics or walking to be their sole exercise, but that doesn’t cut it as far as bone health is concerned. The very act of lifting weights is what strengthens the bones – it isn’t just exercise itself.

Here are some fun ways to sneak calcium into your diet: Sesame seeds have 60 milligrams of calcium per ounce, and sunflower seeds have 33 milligrams. Top your salads liberally with these calcium-rich seeds. Powdered milk is full of calcium and a great way to get a creamy soup without the fat. Use broth as the liquid base for the soup, and simply add as much powdered milk as you like to achieve creaminess. Oranges, broccoli and tofu all have surprisingly higher levels of calcium and should be considered great snacks. Turnip greens, kale and collard greens are also calcium rich, and can be easily mixed in to many meals. Here’s a recipe that will keep your bones strong.

Chicken and Orange Kale Salad Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 /2 tbsp. coconut oil 1 medium clove garlic, minced Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 4 large boneless skinless chicken breast halves 1 medium orange, peeled and segmented 1 large carrot, peeled and shredded 4 cups chopped kale

/4 cup orange juice 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary 1 /4 cup diced red onion Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a small bowl, combine coconut oil, garlic, salt and pepper. Rub mixture into chicken. 1

Place chicken in a large baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes per side or until chicken juices run clear. Uncover and allow chicken to cool. In a large bowl, toss together remaining ingredients (onion through rosemary). Using two forks, shred

chicken. Add to the salad. Toss and serve.

Garden club meeting focuses on fraud Cedarwood Garden Club members met Feb. 9 at the home of Becky Cooke. Cooke and Carol Fogleman co-hosted the meeting, which had 14 members and one former member, Shelby Wright, attending. John Moran of the North Carolina Secretary of State’s office presented an informative program about investment fraud and guarding one’s assets in a scary world. He especially encouraged all members to keep the telephone number of his office handy (1-800-688-4507) so they could call to check the registration of anyone who wanted to broker their invest-

ments. Club members were surprised to learn just how many major Ponzi schemes had been perpetrated on North Carolinians. Husbands and former members will be invited to the 50th anniversary luncheon to be held in May at the Jamestown United Methodist Church fellowship hall. In the Spotlight section, Pat Little gave an entertaining account of her life before and after she met her husband. A nominating committee comprised of Pat Little, Cathy Lanham and Judy Gecinger will present a slate of officers for 2017-2018 at the March meeting.

Wouldn’t you like your children to be great readers? If children can’t read well, they can’t do well in science, social studies or even math. Remember those word problems? Nobody can make you a guarantee, but here are some simple ideas that are bound to have some effects. • Show your child that reading matters to you. Find books that he likes. Let him see you reading. Visit the library together. Read to him every day. • Spend time together. Talk about lots of things. Listen carefully when she talks. Ask her questions about her day. Answer her questions about the world as best you can. • Help him learn the alphabet. Look for letters when you are out. Say the letters and the sounds they make. Practice writing letters with your child as you color together. Make letters with sidewalk chalk or with a stick in the dirt. Find the letters of his name on boxes of cereal at breakfast. • Help her build a large vocabulary. Name things constantly, colors, foods, animals and kinds of weather. Use lots of action words, like walk, run, jump, fly. Talk about the way things are, the way things were and the way things will be. • Read with your child. Listen as she reads her favorite book out loud, over

and over again. Take turns reading the pages. When she gets the words right, tell her “Good job!” • Help him understand the story. Ask him to tell you about the story. What happened? Who did what and why? How did the story begin? How did the story end? What does he think of the story? Listen to his answers. Reading matters a lot. Spending time together (without the cell phone glued to your ear) matters a lot. Listen to your child as she begins to read, as she improves her skills and as she understands what she reads. Even big kids like to have family members read to them. Don’t stop reading out loud just because your child can read to himself. Keep on reading to each other. Jamestown Public Library offers group story times for toddlers and preschoolers on Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Mothers, fathers, grandparents and babysitters are invited to bring their children. Come for our Saturday morning movie, “Finding Dory,” on Feb. 25. Then drop into the children’s room or the juvenile nonfiction room to check out some books to read as you cuddle on the sofa together. Share your love of reading with your children by coming to the library with them. Read together at our small community library.

Haynes-Inman gets First Tee equipment By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer As of last week, the gymnasium at HaynesInman Education Center can become a golf course at any given time. On Feb. 16, Vicki Simmons, the adapted physical education teacher at Haynes-Inman, showed students, staff and guests gathered in the gym how each hole works. The First Tee of the Triad had provided golfing equipment used to outfit the course. Simmons adapted the equipment to fit the needs of students at Haynes-Inman who have physical and/or cognitive disabilities. The First Tee is a national organization that teaches youth ages 7-18 the fundamentals of golf as well as character traits useful to the game and in all aspects of life. It began in 1997, but The First Tee of the Triad did not start until 2008, exposing area children to The First Tee message through after-school and outreach programs. In 2011, the organi-

zation began to donate equipment to schools in the Triad, starting with 21 schools in Forsyth County. All 79 elementary schools in Guilford County have received equipment to be used in physical education classes at a cost of approximately $3,500 per school. “By the end of the year we hope to have First Tee equipment in 150 schools in the Triad,” said Mike Barber, CEO and president of The First Tee of the Triad. “We want to reach as many young people as possible. Our goal is to teach not only knowledge of the game, but also character development and core values that kids can use throughout life. The core values include honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. “We provide lesson plans that reflect our nine core values and, at our expense, train PE teachers how to teach it,” Barber said. “The curriculum that goes with our program fits perfectly with the Guilford

County Schools character development.” The equipment is the same for all schools. It includes oversized clubs that fit movement and muscle coordination typical with that of beginners, tennis-style balls and a variety of targets. In 2014, Simmons borrowed The First Tee equipment from Union Hill School and set it up in the Haynes-Inman gym, adapting it for the students’ needs. She then sent pictures to Mike Barber to show him how The First Tee could work at that school and he also visited the school to see what she had done. “It was the first time I had seen the equipment adapted,” Barber said. “Every child should have the experience – the excitement of success.” “The First Tee does such a good job with colorful equipment that gives more excitement to the game,” Simmons said. “I am thankful to First Tee for including us. Our kids may never play a real game of golf, but now they will know

what it is like. They can be as excited as any kid when they get to play.” The equipment HaynesInman received will be shared with Gateway and CJ Greene education centers. “We are reaching between 35-50,000 kids across the Triad with The First Tee program,” Barber said. “We are very excited about our success.” Norma B. Dennis can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownnews@north state.net.

The First Tee of the Triad is currently operating at 17 facilities throughout the Piedmont Triad, central North Carolina and southern Virginia. It will be returning to Jamestown Park Golf Course in the spring and registration is now open. Scholarships are available. SW Guilford boys take conference championship title Feb. 17 SW Guilford 60 NW Guilford 51

In their final Piedmont Triad 4A Conference Tournament before realignment, the regular-season champion Southwest Guilford Cowboys faced off against the only team to beat them, the Vikings of Northwest Guilford. Just like last season, these two conference foes split the regular season. This time around it was the Cowboys who jumped ahead with a run to open the game. The Vikings, however, responded with a spurt of their own to

make it 9-7 at the. The teams traded baskets with Northwest claiming the lead for the first time at 12-11 with 3:12 to play. Southwest responded with another 4-0 spurt before Northwest turned it up and reclaimed the lead at 18-17. The final 20 seconds of the quarter were outstanding, as Southwest made a basket, then Northwest Guilford’s Reggie Davis hit a three-quarter court shot to give the Vikings the lead at 21-19. The second quarter opened up with both teams not being able to find a good offensive rhythm, but the Cowboys managed to

tie the game at 21 apiece. The Vikings held a small lead throughout the frame and took a small 34-30 lead going into the break. During a halftime discussion reemphasizing defense and rebounding, the Cowboys started to limit Northwest to single shots on the offensive side. The Cowboys and Vikings still traded baskets throughout the frame as the Vikings defense continued to slow the pace of the game. Despite that however, the Cowboys took a 45-43 lead with 1:10 to play in the frame. Those final 70 seconds showed the Cowboys had committed to playing

better solid team defense and got a good defensive stop to end the quarter at the same score. The final frame continued the heated battle. Southwest quickly struck to get the margin at 47-43 just 30 seconds into the frame. There was another solid defense of stop-andscore. In a foul-filled quarter, Southwest managed to get all of the key stops and shoot a good field goal and free-throw percentage to slowly pull away for a strong, tough and physical win on the road 60-51. The Cowboys head into the State Playoffs after winning the regular season

Drug trafficker Chimenes Pavao bribed officials to look the other way, then set up a fully furnished, tastefully decorated three-room suite, complete with air conditioning, a refrigerator, a library, a flat-screen TV, a DVD player and a treadmill. The luxury cell was discovered when a bomb threat caused police to search the entire prison. • If you’ve ever been the victim of a purse-snatching, here’s a discouraging bit of information: Those who study such things say that four out of five perpetrators get away. • In 1804 our planet hit

Clothes sprinklers

By LARRY COX

Q: In my mom’s laundry room I found two clothes sprinklers that I remember her using when I was a child. One is a ceramic Dutch boy that fits on a soda pop bottle filled with water. Is it worth keeping? – Barbara, Pine Bluff, Ark. A: Before steam irons, clothes requiring ironing had to be manually dampened with water. Sprinklers came in many designs. For example, I have seen ones featuring cats, dogs, a rooster and even a monkey. Typical prices for some of the more unusual ones are: elephant with shamrock on tummy, $150; an extremely rare Dachshund,

$500; Mary Poppins, $100; and “Dearie is Weary” in yellow dress, $350. Even common ones generally sell in the $10 to $25 range, so the answer to your question is yes, your sprinklers are worth keeping.

Q: My family collects almost everything imaginable. Several years ago, we started picking up matchbooks when we found them in hotels, bars and restaurants. Since there were five of us looking, we soon discovered we had gathered more than 4,000 different ones. I would like to continue this hobby and need your advice. Is there a club for collectors and a basic reference book? – Lynne,

Gainesville, Fla. A: One of the largest groups is the Rathkamp Matchbook Society with chapters throughout the country. For information, contact Linda Wolfe, 13 Creekstone Drive, Mont Alto, PA 17237. There are several reference books available. My personal favorite is The Matchcover Collector’s Price Guide”by Bill Retskin and published by Antique Trader Books. This comprehensive guide features more than 10,000 matchcover descriptions and estimated values in over 150 categories. I am certain that when the first matchcover was created in 1889, few realized it would it become one of the premiere advertising vehicles of the 20th century. Matchbooks have become an important American collectible as well. Q: I have a cast-iron cooking utensil and a child’s tin watering pail. Do you think these items have any value? – Mitchell, Monroe, Louisiana A: I carefully examined the photos you sent and have come to the conclusion that your items are fairly common and worth only two or three dollars each.

RECIPES/LEGAL NOTICES

Make any day taste like Sunday With school, work and evening activities all spiraling in different directions, most families find that some things have to give. Make sure quality time around the dinner table isn’t one of them with these savvy solutions that can help make weekday meals a cinch. One-dish wonders Most busy families are well-versed in the benefits of slow cooker meals, but when you haven’t planned that far ahead there are other options, such as your oven’s broiler, that allow you to capture the convenience of single-dish meals. A cookie sheet filled with your favorite protein, veggies and a sprinkle of seasoning will broil in minutes. Just remember to cut your protein into small pieces that will cook through quickly and line your sheet with foil for easier cleanup. Another quick-fix idea: empty the odds and ends from the pantry and veggie drawer to make a stir-fry in minutes. Go for the gold When it comes to mealtime, Sunday dinner is the gold standard. It’s the one day of the week when you’re most likely to go “all out” and prepare a great-tasting meal. But you can achieve similar meals during the week using delicious, time-saving sides such as packaged Idahoan Signature Russets mashed potatoes, which can be made in just 5 minutes. The smooth flavor of Idahoan Signature Russets – like original homemade mashed potatoes with just a hint of butter and cream – makes any day taste like Sunday. Quick-prep proteins Every family has its favorite go-to meals that stand the test of time. Build your repertoire with a few recipes centered on proteins that take next to no time to prepare. Eggs don’t have to be restricted to the breakfast table, especially in preparations like a frittata or quiche. Or rely on seafood, which can be seared to perfection in minutes. A mild white fish is an ideal foundation for creating diverse, rich flavors, such as this Seared Halibut with Lemon Butter Sauce.
