Town Council talks projects and money By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer It was a long night for Jamestown Town Council members on Feb. 16 as the 6:30 p.m. meeting lasted nearly 4 hours. For audience members, however, the meeting was only two hours long because the rest of the time was devoted to a closed session to discuss a personnel issue. As revealed in a budget amendment briefly discussed after the closed session, the Council apparently discussed hiring a new part-time person for special events planning. That amendment for funding a salary for this person was not approved. Earlier in the meeting, the Council held a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) citizen input session, although no one in the sparse audience was given the opportunity to speak. The projects on the town’s list are broken down into “must do,” “should do” and “could do” items. “That’s a simple way for us to prioritize the projects,” said Chuck Smith, town manager. “Any project or item that has a health

impact, safety, (or) welfare gets a higher ranking.” He added that as a result of grants and state and federal funding the town has received this year, the East Main Street sidewalk (Lydia’s Sidewalk) and the East Fork Road pedestrian bridge over Koonce City Lake were moved to the “must do” list. Greens reshaping at the golf course – the CIP for several years – also moved to the top of the list. All of these projects have scheduled completion dates of this year. The state of the town’s roadways was one of the top priorities for the 201617 CIP, along with increases for the current year, which ends June 30. Public Services Director Paul Blanchard asked for an additional $25,000 in the current town budget for general street repairs. This will match the $25,000 the town receives from Powell Bill allocations to resurface the streets that are in the most distress. His department has been reviewing all the streets in the town to assess the need for repairs. “It’s a list you will never complete,” Blanchard said. He pointed out that the streets in Whittington Hall have not needed much maintenance in recent years, but are now showing signs of wear. For the 2016-17 fiscal year, Blanchard is requesting $225,000 in the CIP General Fund budget for street repairs. He also said that some of the town’s water lines and sewer system need to be replaced and are listed in the “should do” category. “Chuck has done a great job to make sure we have a Capital Improvement Program so we won’t wake up one day and every line is in trouble,” Blanchard said. It looks like the former Daimler bus facility on Gate City Boulevard (formerly High Point Road) will finally see some action this year. Guilford Technical Community College, which purchased the property in 2013 for $7.4 million, announced plans earlier this month to seek bids for renovating the site. The project is estimated to cost $17 million to renovate the 37-acre bus campus for the school’s advanced manufacturing center and house the transportation and welding programs. With design and construction costs added in, the tab will run $24.5 million. Funding will come from bond transfers from construction of the Cameron Campus. “We are expanding our welding labs and adding a Center for Advanced Manufacturing,” said Dr. Randy Parker, president of GTCC. He added that the site will include robotic manufacturing equipment and a 3-D printing lab. “The reason we’re expanding is to be able to do training,” Parker said. “We’re so booked up now that we don’t have the opportunity to train ev-

Currently, receiving is in a congested area and is dangerous to students. Designs for the facility show a sleek, modern entrance to the existing 242,000 square foot warehouse with a glass front and a new second floor over a portion of the existing building. Moser Mayer Phoenix Associates is serving as architect for the project. GTCC had originally planned to

move the transportation and welding programs to the new Cameron Campus on Hwy. 68, which opened in 2014, but when Daimler moved out practically next door to the Jamestown campus, school officials decided it was logical to stay close to home. Money had something to do with it, of course. Bids for construction at the Cameron Campus came in 25 percent higher than anticipated. “To give you an idea what a good deal this is for the taxpayers of Guilford County, the building we were going to build … (on Cameron Campus) See GTCC, page A3

Fire at Piedmont Environmental Center was intentionally set.

Fire can be good for the environment By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer Motorists traveling along East Fork Road near Jamestown Park on Feb. 10 were probably surprised to see smoke rising from the trees. Nothing to worry about, however. It was a controlled burn at the North Preserve of the Piedmont Environmental Center. With the combined ef-

forts of PEC staff, the City of High Point Parks & Recreation Department, N.C. Forest Service and High Point Fire Department, controlled burns are conducted for several reasons. They help reduce the hazardous “fuel” created by brush and naturally occurring overgrowth, to improve wildlife habitats and to help the pine forest re-generate itself. “When fire opens up the forest and clears away thick

growth, we are safely removing the conditions necessary to create a dangerous and possibly catastrophic fire,” said Dick Thomas, executive director of PEC. “Controlled fires also benefit wildlife. Grasses, trees and shrubs, which emerge following fire, are tender, succulent, and packed with nutrients. Leaves, needles, sticks, and other natural debris are transformed into avail-

Leap year is here By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer It’s that time again. Another four years have passed and leap year is upon us. Instead of its usual 28, February gets an extra day this year. What is leap year and why do we have it? Well, it all comes down to the battle between the solar system and the Gregorian calendar. A year is the length of time it takes the Earth to travel once around the Sun, otherwise known as an or-

bit. Typically, that period of time is defined as 365 days and is reflected in the modern Gregorian calendar, the internationally accepted civil calendar by which we mark time. In actuality, it takes the Earth approximately 365.25 days to complete that journey, also called a

solar year. During a normal year, or non-leap year, the calendar ignores that extra quarter of a day. It appears the man-made calendar works faster than the Earth’s motion through space. However, over time and without correction, the calendar year would drift away from the solar year. By adding a day in February every four years, we are able to keep our calendars in sync with the Earth and its seasons. How did February get the leap day? It was all because of a little vanity on the part

able nutrients and further improves the health of the forest.” The Piedmont Environmental Center is located at 1220 Penny Road on the edge of Arnold Koonce City Lake. Its North and South Preserves surround the Bicentennial Greenway all the way to Gibson Park. Carol Brooks can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownnews@north state.net.

of a couple of Roman emperors. When Julius Caesar became emperor of Rome, the Julian calendar had 355 days and every two years an extra 22-day month was added. He ordered his astronomer Sosigenes to find a better system, which came to be the 365-day year with an extra day every four years. In Julius Caesar’s calendar, February had 30 days and July, his namesake month, had 31 days with August having only 29 days. However, See YEAR, page A7

Racoon found to have rabies virus

The Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health is alerting residents that a raccoon found on East Whittington Street in Greensboro tested positive for the rabies virus on Feb. 22, 2016. This is the first confirmed case of animal rabies in 2016. North Carolina law requires that all domestic pets (cats, dogs and ferrets), whether living inside or outside, age 4 months or older be vaccinated. Even animals that are confined in outdoor fenced areas should have current rabies vaccinations, because wild animals can get into these areas and attack your pets. Rabies continues to circulate within our wildlife population even in the winter months. The best way to protect your family and your pet’s safety is to vaccinate your pets against rabies. Check to make sure all of your family pets are properly vaccinated against rabies and get their shots updated as needed. A simple rabies vaccination can protect your pets against this dangerous health risk. For more information or to schedule an educational program, contact Guilford County Animal Services at 336641-4459 or visit www.myguilford.com.

It’s not double vision that motorists along Vickrey Chapel Road are experiencing these days. There really are two sets of highway signs in several places near Ragsdale High School. One set alerts you – twice – that the speed limit is 35 mph in that area while another set just down the road warns of a reduction to 25 mph.

Triad Ladder of Hope fights against slavery By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer We think of slavery in the United States as a very dark time in our history. A war was waged that, in part, fought to bring down the institution of slavery. At the end of the Civil War, the adoption of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution forever outlawed the practice – theoretically. The dirty little secret is that slavery did not end with abolition in the 19th Century. The practice continues today in every country in the world, including the United States. Fortunately, there are still freedom fighters working to save the victims of

modern-day slavery. Sandra Johnson is one of those freedom fighters. She is founder of Triad Ladder of Hope, a 501(c) (3) faith-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating the exploitation, sale and enslavement of men, women and children. Johnson battles every day to raise awareness about human trafficking, especially in our state. “North Carolina is in the top five states for slavery,” said Johnson. “That’s what people need to understand – that it’s happening in your backyard. You can’t turn your back and ignore this. “There are a lot of different reasons for slavery being so bad in North Carolina. We have a large immigrant population

here. We produce products that need labor. We have military bases. We have major interstate highways. We have resort areas. Any time there is a large event – furniture market, ACC tournament, circus, NASCAR – you will find sex trafficking going on. Traffickers will bring people in for prostitution and also will try to lure in local girls.” According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC), there were 118 human trafficking cases reported in North Carolina during 2015. During the same time period, the NHTRC hotline received 563 calls relating to North Carolina. Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment,

PROJECTS – continued from front The Oakdale Road sidewalk project is scheduled for construction in 2017. The Council heard some bad news when it was revealed that the cost of renovation of the greens at the golf course would probably be higher than anticipated. The most recent figure in January was already considerably higher ($328,000) than originally estimated ($210,000). One project that could be delayed in next year’s CIP is the Forestdale East stormwater project. “(With all) the projects that we have ongoing at this point, I would recommend delaying that project another year,” Smith said. “We may have some unknowns coming in this year and next year we may have to use some of the Fund Balance to do these projects.” Councilmember Lawrence Straughn appeared to be against the delay. “If the (pipe) collapses you have about three houses where the basements are going to be under water,” he said. “One of them’s mine.” Also included in the upcoming CIP was a Corridor Study to determine how the Jamestown Bypass will influence Main Street. The study will offer suggestions on how the town and businesses can draw motorists

back into town. Town Planner Carrie Spencer said the study would be done by the High Point Metropolitan Planning Organization at no cost to Jamestown.

In other business, the Council heard reports from two organizations that receive grants from the town. Jamestown Public Library Director Jamie Cyrus said that 46,845 people have visited the library within the past year to check out materials, use the computers or Wi-Fi, have a test proctored, attend a class, research or study or to get help from the staff. By far, the most use is in the Children/Young Adult book section. The Library receives $60,000 from the Town of Jamestown and $55,500 from Guilford County for operations. Additional funds come from the Friends of the Library and other donations. The majority of the grant from Jamestown, 54 percent, is used for payroll for one fulltime and four part-time staffers. Another town grant recipient is the Historic Jamestown Society. Mendenhall Homeplace Director Shawn Rogers said of the $5,000 grant, $2,400 will be used for new signage designating the town’s

National Register district. Another $2,600 will go toward restoring the historic stone walkway in front of the Homeplace and installing a handicap ramp from the parking lot. Rogers also reported on other grants received by HJS, and noted last year was a record year. “Altogether last year, we raised over $46,000,” Rogers said. “Which easily doubles more than we’ve ever brought in.” Following the grant reports, the Council reappointed Mayor Keith Volz to the Piedmont Triad Regional Council, with Councilmember Straughn as alternate. Volz was also reappointed as the town’s representative to the HPMPO’s Transportation Advisory Committee, with Councilmember Georgia Nixon-Roney as alternate. A proposed discussion of the town’s mission and vision statements was postponed until the March meeting to allow the Parks & Recreation Advisory

harboring, obtaining and transporting of persons by use of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of subjecting them to forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. Its victims often are “hidden in plain sight.” Johnson experienced first hand how a victim can be right before your eyes and yet not be seen. A young Filipino girl working as a nanny brought her charges to Johnson’s church. Johnson had no idea the young woman was forced to care for the children as well as do all the cooking, cleaning and laundry, none of which she was paid for. She also was verbally abused. Her trafficker held her travel documents and used fear and intimidation to control her. When Johnson learned the truth about this young woman, she was so disturbed that she couldn’t turn away from the problem. Today she tirelessly wages war against human trafficking through Triad Ladder of Hope. Johnson says education is key to ending modernday slavery. People must be made aware that it exists and learn how to recognize victims. She spends much of her time speaking to churches and civic organizations. She

also conducts training sessions for community groups and businesses on how to recognize and combat the problem. In addition, Triad Ladder of Hope has several outreach programs. Reflect Hope Outreach involves teams of volunteers who regularly visit local strip clubs. The women working there are believed to be at great risk for or have already become victims of sexual exploitation. The volunteers bring gift bags filled with personal items to give the women, try to build relationships with them and encourage them to seek help. Jobs for Life is a faith-based jobs training program focusing on vulnerable women in shelters who are at risk to become sex trafficking victims Johnson said sometimes the only place a trafficking victim is allowed to be alone is the bathroom. Triad Ladder of Hope purchases soaps, which are then wrapped with labels featuring the NHTRC hotline number. Volunteers visit hotels and ask permission to place the soaps in the hotel bathrooms. Triad Ladder of Hope has business-size intervention cards that feature the NHTRC hotline number. Volunteers tape cards to

the back of public restroom doors or hand them to people who they believe might be victims. Currently, the organization is looking for property to use as a safe house for victims. It has been a slow process, but change is taking place. The efforts of Triad Ladder of Hope are making a difference. “We are doing this to get victims rescued,” said Johnson. “Everything we’ve done, God has done. It’s been an amazing journey with God, to see how He has provided and equipped us to do this work.”

was $30 million, $200 a square foot,” Parker, told the Jamestown Planning Board in June of 2013. “This particular property we’re getting at $33 a square foot.” Parker said the school’s master plan indicates an additional 250,000 square of space on all GTCC campuses (there are currently seven) will be needed by 2020 to meet the educational needs of its students. The Daimler property gave the school about half of the needed square footage. Parker joked that school officials have been calling the Daimler campus “6012,” a reference to the street address behind Sheetz, and that an official name has not been chosen. With the two Jamestown locations separated by Guilford College Road, the question arose about how students would get from one campus to another. The Carol Brooks can be answer – a vehicle tunnel reached at 336-841-4933 under Guilford College or jamestownnews@north Road. “We have the preliminary state.net. Committee and Planning Board the opportunity to discuss the statements. In his manager’s report, Chuck Smith said his request for speed reductions on Main Street and East Fork Road were denied by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. NCDOT’s findings do not indicate the need to reduce speed limits in these areas. Smith also added that the town is still waiting for payment of $52,408 from FEMA for reimbursement for costs incurred from the March 2014 ice storm. The Pinecroft-Sedgefield’s Annual Report to the Town Council will appear in next week’s Jamestown News. The next Town Council meeting will be March 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers. The public is invited to attend.

design work and survey done,” Parker said, “and we’re working with utility companies.” There is no projected start date for the tunnel’s construction. Construction of this tunnel has effectively ended plans for a tunnel under the railroad tracks to the Center for Business and Industry offices and conference center, located in former townhomes off Guilford College Road. This will be the third facility the school has opened in the past three years, including an aviation classroom near Piedmont Triad International Airport and the Cameron Campus just north of the airport. “Things are moving along,” Parker said. “We’re looking forward to getting started. “It will be great for Jamestown.”

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Preparing for the primary Guest editorial by BRENT DUCHARME, Attorney-Fellow with the UNC Center for Civil Rights

As the March 15 primary approaches, recent changes in state voting law are adding an extra layer of confusion for North Carolinians navigating the path to the polls. It is vital for voters to be prepared for the election on March 15. Voters with questions or concerns can call the national Election Protection hotline at 888-OUR-VOTE (888687-8683). The hotline is available during early voting and will be staffed by volunteer attorneys and trained UNC Law students on Election Day. Under North Carolina law, the last day to register for the March 15 primary was February 19. If you failed to register last week, you can still vote during the early voting period, which is scheduled to last from March 3 to March 12. During early voting, you can go to an early voting site, register, and vote in one stop. There is no

same-day registration on Election Day (March 15). During the early voting period, registered voters can cast a ballot at any of the designated early voting sites in their county. Check with your local county Board of Elections for information on where early voting sites are located and when they will be open. If you plan to vote on March 15, you must vote at your assigned precinct. You can check your registration and find your polling place at the NC State Board of Elections website: https://enr. ncsbe.gov/voter_search_public/. On Election Day (March 15), the polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. All voters will be asked to present a photo ID. Acceptable photo IDs include a North Carolina driver’s license or other DMV-issued photo ID, a U.S. passport, a U.S. military ID card or a tribal enrollment card. The address listed on the photo ID does not need to match the address on a voter’s registration. However, school-issued student

IDs will not be accepted. Voters who arrive to the polls without an acceptable ID can still cast a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots, and accompanying declaration forms that explain why a voter does not have a photo ID, will be available at all voting sites. Voters casting provisional ballots must also either: (1) provide their birthdate and the last four digits of their Social Security Number on the declaration form; or (2) present a voter registration card, bank statement, utility bill or government document with their name and address on it. If you encounter or observe any problems while trying to vote, call the national Election Protection hotline at 888-OURVOTE (888-687-8683). Remember these important points and exercise your constitutional right to vote: 1) if you didn’t register before February 19 and you want to vote, you must vote during the early voting period, from March 3 to March 12; 2) vote early if possible at

any early voting location in your county, but on Election Day go your assigned polling place; and

3) bring your photo ID, but even if you don’t have one, you can still vote.

Would a name change be enough? Should Fayetteville State University, the state’s oldest public HBCU (historically black college or university), change its name to the University of North Carolina at Fayetteville? Last week The Fayetteville Observer reported that the name change was being considered in the General Assembly. The proposed name change drew mixed reactions from the school’s alumni and students. Some, like Raymond Privott, president of FSU’s National Alumni Association, think the change would diminish its heritage. Others, like Curtis Worthy, president of the Cumberland County alumni chapter, are open to change. According to The Fayetteville Observer, he said, “Things do change. We need to change with it. It’s not the world we grew up in. It’s the world

by guest columnist D.G. Martin we have to adapt to and live in.” Of the nation’s 104 HBCUs, 11 are in North Carolina. FSU, Elizabeth City State, North Carolina A&T State, North Carolina Central and WinstonSalem State are part of the University of North Carolina system. In addition, Barber-Scotia, Bennett, Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone, St. Augustine’s and Shaw are private institutions. Other proposals for some

of the public HBCUs are floating around the legislature. Financial and leadership challenges face both public and private institutions. Meanwhile all HBCUs are confronted by the question, why do we need to maintain historically black institutions when the doors to other universities are no longer closed to African-Americans? Even the most passionate supporters of HBCUs are asking, “What is their future and what must be done for them to survive?” Award-winning journalist Ron Stodghill, now teaching at Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte, responds to these questions in his timely book, Where Everybody Looks Like Me: At the Crossroads of America’s Black Colleges and Culture. shows us how her desire to study African-American authors led her to conclude that an HBCU, namely Howard, would be her best choice. Bill Cosby used his television show to popularize HBCUs, even wearing various college sweatshirts from time to time and promoting the mythical HBCU Hillman College. He gave $20 million to Spelman College in Atlanta. But, even before the allegations of multiple sexual crimes stained Cosby reputation, his criticism of young blacks and HBCU leadership had compromised the value of his support. Morehouse College business and finance professor John Williams transformed “a sleepy business and finance program into a kind of academic juggernaut, a prestigious gateway for black males to become big ballers on Wall Street.”

Williams’s success was based on “tough tutelage, which blended rigorous analytical training with strong argumentative and presentational skills.” He told Stodghill, “We’ve been placing brothers on Wall Street since the midseventies.” With these and similar stories Stodghill shows why HBCUs are still treasured and remain an important college-level alternative for some African-Americans. He does not lay out a pathway for HBCU survival. But his stories persuaded this reader that HBCU survival requires much more than university name changes and can only come through “tough love” adaptation and reform, generous support from a wider group of donors and renewed federal support for their students.

Community efforts make a difference at Jamestown Elementary By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer “What a Difference a Day Makes” could well be the theme song for the 2015-2016 school year at Jamestown Elementary School. On Oct. 23, 2015, staff members from WFMY News2 in Greensboro came to JES on Make a Difference Day to help paint the media center – a gesture that will continue to be enjoyed long into the future. In addition to painting, they rearranged shelves and moved books. They also completed some landscaping projects outside the school. As the group worked, segments of the station’s news shows were filmed on location. The workday was part of a $5,000 grant the school received from News2 to purchase books and remodel the school’s media center. “I got to meet the anchors you see on television and those who work behind the scenes,” JES media specialist Amanda Austin said. For the past several years, News2 has selected a school whose media center needed to be updated and provided it with funds to help make the changes. Jamestown Elementary was one of three in the running for this year’s grant. “At the beginning of the school year, a lady from

News2 came to our school to talk to the principal and me and took pictures,” Austin explained. “We were chosen to get the grant. The station wanted a minimum of $3,000 spent on books and the rest could be used as needed.” Sherwin Williams donated the paint along with breakfast and lunch for those who were working. Austin selected the school’s colors of blue and orange for the paint, but in softer tones to brighten the walls. Besides buying books with money from the grant, she was able to purchase accents, such as large letters/words denoting where certain types of books are located. With so many improvements being made to the media center, Leah Callaway, the school’s counselor, reached out

to Jim Watford, associate minister at her church, Jamestown United Methodist, to see if it would make a donation toward new furniture. “Jim got back to me and said they would be willing to sponsor all of it,” Callaway said. “Our church already has a ministry with Parkview Elementary through the Kids’ Café and tutoring,” Watford said. “We wanted to expand the ministry to our local school. It is part of our neighborhood. Joe Lorber, the missions chair, raised donations from the congregation for the media project. “News2 brought books and painted the media center, we purchased furniture and a rug.” Austin’s father, John Johnson, upholstered two couches and she purchased

two coordinating chairs and a rug to complete the newly designed reading area. “The books I had ordered came while I was out of work on maternity leave,” Austin said. “When I came back, there were five boxes of books to open and catalog. It was so exciting.” The update to the media

center that started on Make a Difference Day is not quite finished, however. Jamestown United Methodist Church also is purchasing lightweight, stackable chairs to place around the reading tables. They are on order and expected soon. Thanks to a caring com-

munity, the media center at JES has a fresh look and lots of new reading material to both inform and entertain young minds.

Loved again – bicycles get new owners By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Previously-loved bicycles are finding new owners thanks to a repair ministry that includes Mark Bingham and Joe Lorber, members of Jamestown United Methodist Church. Bingham began refurbishing used bicycles about eight years ago at the request of the Rev. Sonny Reavis, former pastor of Ward Street United Methodist Church in High Point. Reavis felt there were children in nearby Oak Hill Elementary School who would never be financially able to own a bicycle. He organized a program for area kids to participate in bike rides around the neighborhood on the refurbished, two-wheeled bicycles. Donna Smith began helping Bingham do the repair work about two years ago and Lorber, chairman of the missions committee at Jamestown United Methodist, has been working on the project for the past eight months. “We have three work stations in the basement at Ward Street United Methodist that allow us to work on the bikes in the air,” Lorber said. “That is where all the magic happens. “Over the years, the owners of Bicycle Toy and Hobby Sales in High Point have

made it possible for Bingham to get parts needed to repair the bikes.” Recently the pastors at Jamestown United Methodist talked to Leah Callaway, the counselor at Jamestown Elementary School, about ways the church could help the students. The bicycle ministry was mentioned and Callaway and Jamestown Principal Dwayne Jordan were excited at the idea of providing bicycles to some of their students. During Awards Day on Feb. 12, all the students’ names were placed in a container and through a random drawing 11 lucky children in grades K-5 became bike owners. While bicycles are still being made available to kids through Ward Street United Methodist Church, the three who are part of the ministry to repair them hope to continue to give bicycles to more students at Jamestown Elementary also. “The bikes are not doing anyone any good if they are fixed and setting in the church basement,” Lorber said. To make the project work, however, donations of used bicycles are needed. They can be any size and made for either gender. To donate bicycles, contact Bingham or Lorber through Jamestown United Methodist at 336-454-2717.

It does not take much thought to realize that the free education offered to today’s children is not really free. Much of it is paid for with tax dollars, money from the pockets of each citizen. But there are often needs not covered by county, state and federal funds. It is for those times that the local community steps up to fill in the gaps, especially for children and families in need. Leah Callaway, a counselor at Jamestown Elementary School, has seen the community help time and again throughout her long career at the school. “I could always call on Jamestown United Methodist to help with food or with clothes from the church’s outreach center,” Callaway said. The association between JUMC and Jamestown Elementary began when Olin Jackson, a member of the church, was principal of the school. A child needed shoes

h

and he asked if someone could help get them. Doris Berry saw that the shoes were supplied and from that the Outreach Center (thrift store) evolved. “As a church, we want to become more involved with the school,” said Jim Watford, associate pastor at JUMC. “The Anchor Sunday School class has helped with a food pantry at the school for several years. Recently we conducted a school supply drive and are working toward establishing tutoring and Lunch Buddy programs.” Callaway noted that many organizations and individuals have helped the school. “For a long time, Jamestown Presbyterian has sponsored families at holidays by providing toys, clothes and food,” she said. “They help throughout the year with rent for those in need and conduct summer food drives. “Some people provide help anonymously. We appreciate all the community does to help our school and its students. When we need it the most, an outpouring of helps comes through.”

It’s a circus around here

Look out Ringling Brothers, there’s a new circus in town. Students at Jamestown Presbyterian Preschool delighted family and friends with circus performances on Feb. 10-11. The preschoolers dressed up as ducks, bears, elephants, lions and dogs to perform. They even had strong men and women with barbells and weights (made from balloons). Of course, no circus would be complete without clowns. This was the first circus for Jamestown Presbyterian Preschool but everyone had so much fun that plans are to make this an annual event.

The Cedarwood Garden Club held its February meeting at the home of Co-President Lynette Smitherman. There were 14 members present. Sharing the duties of hostess with Lynette were Pat Little and Millie Maultsby. Also assisting were Sherrie Richmond and Cathy Lanham. Smitherman featured a Valentine theme in table appointments and refreshments. Wild Bird Feeding Month. Be sure to keep your feeders full. Birds need the suet cakes this time of year, too. I put my feeders on the back porch to keep the cats entertained. I also spread peanut butter on my wood pile to attract the squirrels. They love teasing the cats. We have three new bird books for young children. Early Bird was written by Toni Yuly, in which the Early Bird rushes to the garden to have breakfast. We think she wants to eat the Early Worm, only to find out that they are friends and want to have breakfast together. Pair it with Nest by Jorey Hurley, which is a picture study of a year in the life of a bird. Each page only has one or two words, but the drawings of the robin family really don’t need words. The author puts an educational page at the back for families who want to know more about robins. On the Wing is a collection of poems about birds. David Elliott wrote the poems and Becca Stadtlander drew the pictures. Sprinkle a few poems in between the stories. The three books together will make a great story time for little ones. Patrick Ness took an old Japanese folktale and turned it into an adult novel about a broken hearted man who rescues an injured crane. The Crane Wife tells the story of the man’s transformation as surely as the crane is transformed into his beautiful wife. Olivia’s Birds is the story of an 11-year-old and her efforts to save the birds and other wildlife after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Author/artist Olivia Bouler’s paintings

Students begin running club as Service Learning project

By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer When students in Laura Gonzalez’s sixth grade AA class at Jamestown Middle School began discussing ideas for a Service Learning Club, Gonzalez suggested the possibility of starting a GO FAR (Go Out For A Run) club. Jamestown Middle had never sponsored such a club, but Gonzalez had learned during a summer conference that middle schools were participating. “Our new principal (Trent Vernon) came from Johnson Street Global, a K-8 school, which participated in GO FAR,” Gonzalez said. “About half the children I teach had been in the program in elementary school. “Sixth graders cannot take part in school sports so they were excited about the idea of a running club.” The group needed $320 to purchase a GO FAR license for their school and students took on the challenge to raise the funds. They sold concessions at home basketball games and sold candygrams to other students and staff during the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. Gonzalez’s students put the candygrams together and delivered them on Feb. 12. “They took everything personally, including

counting money from their sales,” Gonzalez said. The students also took responsibility for advertising the fundraising events, which included making posters and a PowerPoint presentation for the school’s “Good Morning” television announcement show. They wrote the copy about the events for the principal to read on his weekly phone message to parents. “I am as proud as a peacock for what they have done, “Gonzalez said. “They are learning good social skills such as talking to others, including adults.” Because Gonzalez could see the students needed extra help raising funds, she requested a donation from the PTA to assist with the project. The group opted to pay for the entire license, which will cover the races for this spring and next fall. “The money the students have earned will be used toward their race registrations,” Gonzalez explained. Students will begin running in March preparing for a 5-K race to be held May 7. They will practice at school once a week and are encouraged to run at home as well. The club is about more than running, however. It includes learning about good nutrition and character development. “In the process, the stu-

Her sixth graders share a certain amount of pride because they are the first group from JMS to participate in GO FAR. Gonzalez’s goal is to get sponsors to continue the program next year and open it to all grade levels. Several staff members and Principal Vernon are interested in running with the club. “I am excited to see what happens, knowing that my little group will be the founding members,”

Gonzalez said with a smile. “I want my kids to feel empowered by this experience. I would love to have them come back as leaders to mentor others.” Coach Kristen Williams is helping Gonzalez work with the 31 students participating in this year’s GO FAR club. Gonzalez acknowledged that to continue the club next year for all grade levels she would Students created posters need more volunteers. “It is important to get sales. as many kids involved in school activities as pos- the classroom. “Next year we want to sible. GCS schools recognized for focus on character Guilford County Schools have another reason to say, “GCS, yes!” Three of the four schools selected as 2016 State Schools of Character in North Carolina are Guilford County Schools. Haynes-Inman Education Center, Oak Hill Elementary and Southeast High were named 2016 North Carolina Schools of Character by Character.org in Washington D.C., a national advocate and leader for the character education movement, and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Schools of Character are schools that stand out in their use of character development to drive a positive impact on academics, student behavior and school climate. The GCS schools were among 68 schools in the country receiving

the honor this year, and three of four in North Carolina. Dudley High, Wiley Elementary and the Middle College at GTCCHigh Point also received State Schools of Character Honorable Mentions. These schools of character join seven other GCS schools that have been named State Schools of Character since 2014. Once a school receives the honor, they keep it for three years. With 10 State Schools of Character, GCS has the most in North Carolina. GCS also has three national schools of character, named by Character. org, and is one of only 21 National Districts of Character in the country. Schools and districts keep the national designation for five years. The focus on character is mak-

GCS’ Character Development initiative is credited with reducing out of school suspensions by 24 percent between the 2007-08 and 2012-13 school years and increasing the perceptions of students who feel safe in their schools. “We are proud of the work all these schools are doing to build safe and caring learning environments for our students, while also helping our students become more well-rounded individuals,” says Charlos Banks, executive director of student services and character development. “Our students are learning the skills and qualities that their future employers are looking for, personal traits like self-discipline, respect, integrity and kindness.”

As I See It

by Shirley Adkins, Womack Publishing, Star Tribune The Bible is full of angels yet there seem to be many people who don’t really believe they exist. I know for a fact that they do, the spiritual kind and the physical kind. Hebrews 13:2 tells us to “be not forgetful to entertain strangers; for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” This verse refers to Genesis 18 when Abraham entertained three strangers, unaware that they were angels. Sometimes, angels come in the form of earthly friends lending a helping hand or words of comfort and encouragement. It may be a friend you haven’t heard from in a long time and she calls just when you need that special lift. When that happens, it is just like Jesus has laid His arm across your shoulders and reassured you that “everything will be alright.” Have you ever gotten confirmation from an unexpected source at just the right time? Have you ever gotten physical help from someone when you didn’t think anyone knew you needed it? These things are not coincidences. They are your Father letting you know that He knows you and cares for you in even the smallest way. Psalm 91:11 reminds us “He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” Angels are all around us, the heavenly kind as well as the earthly kind. Think about this… maybe you are someone’s angel.

when Caesar Augustus became emperor, he wanted his namesake month to be special, too. He added two days to August to match July and February ended up on the short side. In 1582, Pope Gregory revised the Julian calendar stating that leap days should not be added in years ending in “00” unless that year was also evenly divisible by 400. For example, 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. This correction was designed to stabilize the calendar over thousands of years. So far, the math has worked correctly in the Gregorian calendar. However, in about 10,000 years we might have to recalculate. Why are we so fascinated with leap years? Well, it’s just different. The chance of being born on leap day is one in 1,461. People who are born on Feb. 29 are called “leaplings” or “leapers.” In non-leap years, these folks can choose to celebrate their birthday either Feb. 28 or March 1. About 4.1 million people around the world have been born on Feb. 29.

Some notable “leaplings” include Pope Paul III, singer Dinah Shore, motivational speaker Tony Robbins and big band leader Jimmy Dorsey as well as serial killers Aileen Wuornos and Richard Ramirez. Leap year also marks a time for women to take the reins and propose marriage. One theory is the custom dates to the 5th Century when an Irish nun complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose. St. Patrick then supposedly gave women the chance to pop the question every four years. Another theory suggests Queen Margaret of Scotland was behind a 1288 law allowing unmarried women to propose during leap year and any man refusing was fined. Enjoy the novelty of this leap year. You will have to wait four more years to celebrate another one.

Hayes signs to play soccer at Catawba By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer Oftentimes, our future is based on our own efforts. At other times, our future is the combination of nurturing, environment and relationships. For Julia Hayes, it’s a bit of both. Hayes, who recently signed to play soccer at Catawba College, grew up in a soccer household. Her father, Morris, was her coach in the Jamestown Youth League and older brother Eric was a soccer player, currently playing for Guilford College. It was natural, therefore, for Julia to pursue a soccer career. “My brother is my role model,” Hayes said. “I wanted to do everything he did.” She tried volleyball and horseback riding as a child, but kept feeling a draw to soccer. “I like meeting new friends and it keeps you in good shape,” Hayes said. “It’s fun to travel. I’ve been to so many different states with soccer. “I’m really thankful for all of the people I’ve gotten to play with, the places I’ve gone, and all my coaches for helping me.” This year, Hayes is a

captain of the team as well as being one of the team’s defenders. “Normally defenders don’t get recognized that much because they don’t score goals and they don’t assist,” said Coach Brien Braswell, “but they are a vital part of any team.” Braswell said Hayes is one of the team’s top servers and is often picked to do the penalty kicks, used to break ties. “She’s a true student athlete,” Braswell said. “She excels in the classroom as well as the playing field. She has made scholar athlete every season she has played at Ragsdale.” Hayes watches soccer on television every chance she gets to improve her own game. While she did not pick out one athlete that she follows, she is a big fan of the U.S. Women’s National Team and plans to root for them in the 2016 Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro in August. Hayes plans to major in sports marketing at Catawba. She will continue as a defender, but will have to earn a spot as a starter among a large incoming class. She wants to see how her freshman season goes before considering a career as a professional.

The First Tee of the Triad spring registration opens Spring registration at The First Tee of the Triad is now open. The First Tee of the Triad is the local chapter of the international movement to teach children life skills through golf. Among the highlights of The First Tee of the Triad’s spring classes are those designed just for girls and others designed for teens only. “Girls Golf 2gether” is offered at The First Tee of the Triad “flagship locations,” Gillespie Golf Club in Greensboro and Tanglewood Park in Clemmons. “Teens on the Tee” is offered at Gillespie Golf Club and Winston Lake in Winston-Salem. Both of these classes are considered beginner level. Parents are encouraged to register their children for the Par 3 Series in addition to after-school programming to enhance their developing skills in a fun, competitive atmosphere. “Getting a new year started is always exciting for our staff because we know how much the children enjoy our programming,” said Mike Barbe,

The First Tee of the Triad CEO. “It seems like it was just yesterday that (PGA Tour golfer) Chesson Hadley helped us present our 2015 awards last November, but here we are about to start a new season. “We’ve come a long way since our chapter was founded back in 2007. We have 16 locations throughout the Piedmont Triad, and we can potentially improve the lives of thousands of children every year. That’s why we love what we do at The First Tee of the Triad.” Spring classes begin the week of April 4 at The First Tee of the Triad locations

throughout the Piedmont Triad including Jamestown Park Golf Course; weekday classes are 4:30-6 p.m. Classes run eight weeks, but a ninth week could be added if necessary for weather-related make-ups. Eagle classes will last 10 weeks. After-school programming is $75 for the session. All participants, new or returning, are required to register for classes in order to guarantee their spaces. Information on programs, registration and scholarships for all classes is available at www.thefirst teetriad.org.

cer team made it to the quarterfinals of the state championship in 4A in 2015, the farthest any Ragsdale soccer team has advanced, male or female.

The Piedmont Triad 4A Conference Semifinals pitted the No. 1-seeded Southwest Guilford Cowboys against the No. 4-seeded East Forsyth Eagles on Feb. 17. The Eagles overcame and held off the Ragsdale Tigers the previous night in the opening round with the Cowboys coming off a first-round bye. The Cowboys swept the Eagles in the regular season, but beating the same opponent three times in the same season is not an easy thing to do. The Eagles hosted this year’s tournament and come into the game feeling good. The game opened with an East Forsyth basket and after a Cowboy miss, the Eagles made a free throw

to go up 3-0. It wasn’t until the 5:50 mark that the Cowboys got on the board, making it 3-2. The Eagles quickly got another basket, but on the ensuing possession, a Cowboys 3-pointer tied the game up at 5 with 3:47 to go in the quarter. A couple of possessions later the Eagles went back up at 7-5, but yet again a Cowboy 3-pointer gave the Cowboys the lead for the night at 8-7. From there, Southwest closed the frame out with a slim lead of 13-11. The second quarter saw the Cowboys push the margin to 9 but the Eagles refused to let the gap get any wider in the stanza and the half closed at 31-22. The second half was owned by the Cowboys as they methodically stopped the Eagles and put the ball in the basket on the other side. The third quarter

closed with the Cowboys up 53-33. The final stanza was a back-and-forth affair, but still too much Southwest as the Cowboys finished with a 71-54 victory to advance to the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference championship game on Friday night. (Southwest lost to Northwest Guilford in that game 88-80 in overtime.) E. Forsyth 11 11 11 21 54 Southwest 13 18 21 18 71 E. RECIPES

Give Sides Center Stage I

t’s often hard to arrange meals for busy families on the go, but dinner can still be approachable and wholesome. One easy solution: transform a simple everyday side dish into a meal that will have your family asking for more. These recipes, created in partnership with lifestyle expert Sandra Lee, feature Bob Evans’ collection of highquality, like-scratch side dishes ranging from mashed potatoes to macaroni and cheese. The sides, found in the refrigerated section of most local grocery stores, are made with real ingredients and the perfect blend of seasonings to make entrees taste just right. Find more mealtime solutions that put side dishes at the forefront at Farm Fresh Ideas (bobevans.com/recipes), a club that provides recipes, a personalized recipe box and helpful tips in the kitchen. Macwich Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Servings: 4 8 slices garlic bread, frozen 1 package Bob Evans Macaroni and Cheese 4 slices cheddar cheese 16 dill pickle chips (optional) 1 can tomato soup, prepared (optional for dipping) In large non-stick skillet over medium-low heat, heat 8 bread slices for 3 minutes and flip over to evenly warm through. Prepare macaroni and cheese according to package directions. Place 1/2 slice of cheddar cheese on each piece of garlic bread. On 4 pieces of garlic bread, evenly spoon 4 ounces (about 1/2 cup) of macaroni and cheese on top of cheddar cheese/garlic bread slices. Place remaining 4 slices of garlic bread on top of macaroni and cheese stack. Toast both sides for an additional 2 minutes or until bread is toasty brown and cheese is melted. Serve with dill pickle chips and tomato soup for dipping. Orzo with Italian Sausage, Mushrooms and Spinach Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Serves: 4 4 tablespoons butter, divided 1 cup uncooked orzo pasta 1 can (14.5 ounces) low sodium chicken broth 1 pound hot or Italian sausage 1/2 cup diced onion 1 cup sliced mushrooms

MACWICH 1 tablespoon freshly minced garlic 10 ounces baby spinach 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese salt and pepper, to taste In a large sauce pan over medium-high heat, melt 2 tablespoons butter and add orzo. Stir until lightly browned. Add chicken broth and bring to boil. Cover. Reduce heat and simmer about 15 minutes, until orzo is tender and liquid is absorbed. Meanwhile, in large skillet over medium heat, add sausage and crumble with potato masher until fully cooked, about 5 minutes. Add onion and mushrooms, and continue to cook until onions are translucent and mushrooms are tender. Add garlic and saute 30 seconds or until garlic becomes fragrant. Turn heat down to low. Add spinach and cover pan to allow spinach to wilt. Set aside until orzo is done. When orzo is done, add sausage mixture and Parmesan cheese and mix well. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

BAKED POTATO PIZZA 1 package Bob Evans Glazed Apples 1 cup frozen sweet cherries 1 cup blackberries or raspberries 1 cup pear, diced

Remove from oven and let set 5 minutes before serving.

Heat oven to 375˚F. In large mixing bowl, mix together glazed apples and fruits. Pour into 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Bake uncovered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. While fruit is baking, mix together ingredients for streusel. Streusel Topping 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1 cup uncooked rolled oats 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon 8 tablespoons (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces Mix together brown sugar, oats, flour and cinnamon until evenly combined. With fingertips, blend in butter pieces until small clumps form and butter is well incorporated, about 2 minutes. Sprinkle topping evenly over fruit and place back in oven uncovered. Bake until streusel is lightly browned and fruit is tender, about 30 minutes.

Time-saving tips These simple tricks from Sandra Lee will cut minutes off your busywork, so you can get to the more important things like enjoying time with your family. 1. Shave minutes off meals using tools in original ways: An ice cream scoop makes cookies and meatballs in a flash; an egg slicer quickly cuts mushrooms and berries. 2. To further speed up slow cooker prep time, keep favorite premixed seasoning packets, pre-sliced vegetables and jarred sauces on hand. 3. Desserts need not be made from scratch to have a homespun feel. Dip packaged cookies in chocolate, embellish bakery cupcakes or create lollipops from candies.

Pursuant to N.C.G.S. §45-21.10(b), and the terms of the Deed of Trust, any successful bidder may

be required to deposit with the Trustee immediately upon conclusion of the sale a cash deposit of the greater of five per cent (5%) of the amount bid or Seven Hundred Fifty Dollars ($750.00). Any successful bidder shall be required to tender the full balance purchase price so bid in cash or certified check at the time the Trustee tenders to him a deed for the property or attempts to tender such deed, and should said successful bidder fail to pay the full balance purchase price so bid at the time, he shall remain liable on his bid as provided for in N.C.G.S. §45-21.30(d) and (e). Reasons of such inability to convey include, but are not limited to, the filing of a bankruptcy petition by an owner or debtor prior to the confirmation of the sale and reinstatement of the loan without the knowledge of the Substitute Trustee. If the validity of the sale is challenged by any party, the Substitute Trustee, in his sole discretion, if he believes the challenge to have merit, may request the Court to declare the sale to be void and return the deposit. The purchaser will have no further remedy.
