Planning Board approves East Main Street rezoning By CAROL BROOKS Editor Attendance at the March 13 Planning Board meeting was anticipated to be so large that a sign was posted on the council chambers door directing visitors next door to the Civic Center. Good thing. Nearly all the seats were filled by those wanting to learn more about one of two rezoning public hearings. The first public hearing concerned a request from Davis Family Enterprises, LTD, for property located at 413 E. Main St., regarding a change from Conditional Zoning-Agricultural (CZAG) to Conditional Zoning Single Family Residential (CZ-SFR). At the begin-

ning of this public hearing, Planning Board member Ed Stafford recused himself because he is handling the sale of the property. Alternate Russell Walker replaced Stafford. “The applicant is interested in marketing the property for sale for single-family homes,” said Jamestown Planning Director Matthew Johnson. “The applicant has voluntarily requested a condition that the property shall not be subdivided into more than five lots.” Forestdale East residents were relieved that there will not be a cut-through road from East Main Street. The residents also learned that current streets Wynnwood and Somerset would not be extended into the property.

The smallest lot is slightly over two acres. With the requested zoning, multifamily dwellings are not permitted. “It’s doing our neighborhood a favor by splitting it up this way,” said Planning Board member Eddie Oakley. Johnson noted that the Main Street property is part of the town’s scenic corridor overlay district. Oakley requested any buildings have the same road setback as Jamestown United Methodist Church up the road, so as to not spoil the scenic corridor. The minimum setback is 50 feet. Johnson added that an additional condition could be requested to preserve the white fence that borders East Main Street. In addi-

Only one person spoke against the rezoning. Steve Brannon was concerned about roads being torn up during construction and the long time it takes to make repairs.

Speaking in favor, Stafford, the real estate agent, reinforced the fact that the Davis family has requested low-density development, not multifamily, on the property, with no subdividing. Following a brief discussion period by the Board and a few more questions from the audience, the

request was unanimously approved. It will go before the Town Council in April.

Rezoning would affect Riverwalk By CAROL BROOKS Editor The March 13 Planning Board meeting drew many residents of the Riverwalk community for a rezoning request that would affect their neighborhood. Riverwalk residents will already be impacted by the Jamestown Bypass – official NCDOT designation U-2412-A. Residents met with representatives of NCDOT in November to learn how close the bypass would come to their properties. Now a rezoning request has residents stirred up again. When the Riverwalk project was planned in 2000, a portion near the townhomes on the west side of Dillon Road was designated to be the site of eight condominiums, the Palisades Condominiums. The site was never developed due to uncertainty regarding the bypass location. The owner now is looking to sell the property and has requested rezoning from Single Family Residential (SFR) to Conditional Zoning Multi Family Residential (CZ-MFR) for the approximately 1.5-acre site. “The property was previously zoned R-8 PUD with conditions prior to the adoption of the 2009 Land Development Ordinance,” said Jamestown Planning Director Matthew Johnson. “It was rezoned in 2009 to SFR as it was believed that with smartphone

Riverwalk rezoning discussions were continued until the April 10 Planning Board meeting. The red area is the property requested to be rezoned. this parcel would be taken by NCDOT for the road project.” The property is adjacent to the bypass right of way and the driveway would be along the right of way. CZ-MFR zoning more closely matches the origi-

nal R-8 PUD zoning and is comparable to the Riverwalk zoning. “It should have been zoned in 2009 like the rest of Riverwalk,” said Rich Glover of Jamestown Engineering Group, who is representing the seller.

“This is really just to correct the zoning. The owner does not have plans to develop it. “Any conditions that are applied as part of a rezoning stay with the property until it’s rezoned again or developed,” Glover said.

Even though the owner does not plan to develop the property himself, he has placed a condition on the application to limit the permitted uses to either singlefamily dwellings, townhomes or condominium units. This means further owners could not exceed these limits of construction. Access would be from Misty Waters Lane. Access from Dillon Road is impossible because it’s part of the DOT right of way. Vern Queen, president of the Riverwalk West Homeowners Association, spoke in opposition to the rezoning. “All construction would be coming through Riverwalk,” Queen said. “There’s only one entrance. We’ve got enough turmoil now with the bypass. “There are also too many unknowns about what they would build that would lower the value of our community.”

Queen asked other Riverwalk residents who are opposed to the rezoning stand. Approximately 16-18 people stood. Some spoke later in opposition. “We are going to be so impacted by the road and any building that is done on that piece of property is going to impact those people who bought property in that area along the river,” said Louise Miller. “I will be highly impacted because I live on the dead end [of Misty Waters Lane],” said Carolyn Braswell. “The main reason for moving [there] was it was a loving, quiet, safe area. More traffic would change the whole dynamic of the neighborhood.” “We bought there for safety and quietness,” said Norris Guy. “This would tear that apart.” “If this happens, we are being squeezed two ways,” See RIVERWALK, page A3

Cedarwood Garden Club enhances local community by planting camellias By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer To help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Cedarwood Garden Club, members are planting five camellias, the club flower, in public places throughout the community. The first of the camellias was planted late in 2016 at the Cedarwood Drive entrance to the neighborhood. George Orfanedes, who is a Cedarwood resident and volunteer for the neighborhood, planted the camellia for the garden club. A second camellia was planted at the Mendenhall Homeplace Herb Garden. Tentative plans are to plant another one at the Mendenhall Homeplace and

a couple at the Cedarwood pool. The exact locations are yet to be determined. “We chose to plant five camellias to represent each decade the club has been chartered,” explained Sherri Richmond, club president. “Right now we are waiting for warmer weather to plant the others to make sure the plants get a good start.” Norma B. Dennis can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownnews@north state.net.

Sheriff’s Report Vehicle purchased with counterfeit bills

• Rickey Boyd reported that someone used counterfeit money to purchase a vehicle owned by Manuel Torres on March 14 at 2 p.m. at 3419 Dillon Road. The counterfeit bills amounted to $3,300. Boyd was assisting Torres with the sale. • Deputies responded to a call that a resident had received harassing phone calls on her cell phone several times between March 13 and 16.

Sheriff offers tips against breaking and entering Sheriff BJ Barnes reports the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office has seen an increased amount of vehicle breaking and enterings over recent weeks in and around the eastern portion of the county. In the majority of these cases, the victims left their vehicles unsecured with valuable items in plain view. The unknown suspect(s) have targeted residential neighborhoods in the area of Burlington Road, Mt. Hope Church Road, Liberty Road and Williams Dairy Road. The suspects have been targeting unlocked vehicles between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. The suspects are possibly operating a Chevrolet truck of unknown make and color. The deputies and detectives of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office have offered the following tips to prevent vehicle B&Es: • Lock and secure your valuable items: In many cases, victims have not secured their valuables and leave them in plain sight, such as a cell phone or

handgun in an unlocked car. Please lock your vehicle. • Record serial numbers: Any items such as computers, GPS, cell phones and weapons all have serial numbers, and we recommend having these recorded in a safe place. • Photograph expensive and unique items: A picture is worth a thousand words. A photograph of an expensive piece of jewelry would describe a unique piece better than words any day, and this will assist an officer if a similar piece is located. • Activate vehicle alarms: If you have an alarm, activate it when you leave your vehicle. If you see or observe suspicious person(s), vehicles or activity, contact the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office with as much detailed information as possible. Everyone is encouraged to call 911 and report any activity that seems out of place in their neighborhood. Citizens also are encouraged to be a good witness by writing down license plates and getting good descriptions of suspects and vehicles. If possible take a photo; however, do not put yourself in danger.

Sheriff Barnes wins Heart of MADD award Sheriff BJ Barnes was presented the Heart of MADD Award, in a ceremony held March 10. The following excerpt was read, as Sheriff Barnes was presented the award: “Sheriff BJ Barnes has always been supportive of all his deputies arresting impaired and under age impaired drivers. When approached about forming a multi-agency DWI Task Force in 2012, he was all for putting a team together and helped with contacting other agency department heads to see which agencies wanted to participate. During the last five years, his staff has gone to him on several occasions with different ideas that included all facets of DWI enforcement and he has always made himself available

In 2016, when the educational position needed funds to purchase items to assist with educating the public, Sheriff Barnes supported the team on securing funds from outside sources such as the ABC commission. “Sheriff Barnes continues to work with multiple media outlets to spread educational information on the dangers of impaired driving and underage drinking. He continues his message with his strong partnership with GHSP and MADD. Sheriff Barnes has been a strong supporter of MADD and always willing to send deputies to events

and functions of MADD. “In 2016, Sheriff Barnes still searching for ways he can reach the public, teamed up with the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission with a campaign called “Talk IT Out.” He teamed up with Sheriff’s across North Carolina and local Police departments to continue his education efforts, focusing on the dangers of underage drinking. Sheriff Barnes really wants to save lives and reduce fatalities from impaired driving crashes and underage drinking. He is always humble, never wanting the attention on himself but on his deputies and staff instead. Passion for career as big as all outdoors By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Growing up on a farm in Pilot Mountain, Josh Tucker had the fields and woods as his playground. “I was outside almost all the time,” he admits. “My dad was an outdoor person too and he taught me a lot. I attended Appalachian State University because there were a lot of outdoor activities in the mountains.” As the new park supervisor at High Point City Lake, Tucker is happy for the opportunity to share his joy of the outdoors with others in High Point and the surrounding area. Although Tucker graduated from Appalachian with a major in parks and recreation, working in that field was not his original plan. In high school he considered being a biologist or a history teacher, even serving as an intern for a middle school history class. “History was my favorite subject,” Tucker said. “I had a lot of good teachers. But in college I learned about the professions

Working outside and with the public is a combination that drew Josh Tucker to a career in the parks and recreation profession. associated with a parks and recreation degree and realized I could get paid for doing some-

thing I loved – being outdoors.” As a sophomore, he began to change his career focus.

“I had a lot in common with other students in this major and it fit me better than anything else,” Tucker said. After graduating in 2013, Tucker’s first job was with the Parks and Recreation Department in Winston-Salem. He also served as park supervisor for Surry County before coming to High Point. “I liked this area,” he said. “I had heard good things about the parks and rec department and wanted to be part of it. It was a good opportunity for professional growth.” As supervisor, Tucker oversees the day-to-day operations of City Lake Park. He also helps plan and develop programs and activities at the park. “That is a team effort, along with the assistant supervisor and others in the Parks and Rec Department,” he said. Tucker loves that his job is anything but routine, noting that there is something new happening everyday. He personally enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking, camping and other outdoor sports. “The biggest benefits of my

job are being outside and working with the public,” Tucker said. “This job is a good combination of the two. I cannot imagine being cramped up in an office all day.” Of course, Tucker finds himself working at the time others have the opportunity to enjoy recreation, but that fails to hamper the pleasure he takes from his job. “I hope to work in parks and rec for my entire career, wherever that might take me,” Tucker said. “There are so many directions you can go with it.” In addition to a major in parks and recreation, Tucker has a minor in business management and certifications in pool operations and playground safety. “I think all that has helped me be able to move up the ladder in my career,” Tucker said. “Plus, I am passionate about this work. That is what drives me – I want to do a good job.”

Guilford Education Alliance hosts the 2017 Education Summit On the morning of April 5, 18 selected Guilford County schools will open their doors to the community, serve breakfast and host a talk about the challenges and opportunities each unique school faces as they seek to educate the diverse student population in our county. It’s all part of Guilford Education Alliance’s annual Education Summit, an event designed to help the community, area busi-

nesses and local educators come together to see how they can form beneficial alliances to further the goal of providing every child with an education and a future. “GEA, and our many community partners, believe when children and schools thrive, a community thrives,” said GEA executive director Winston McGregor. “There are ways for the general public and area businesses to partner with our schools to

help educators in innovative ways and often, it just starts with a conversation.” Last year, GEA invited the community into schools for the first time and over 300 people attended. McGregor said the impact was immediate. “After the 2016 summit, we had participants commit to supporting schools they visited in a variety of ways – from a church throwing a teacher appreciation luncheon to an individual

Although not required for rezoning, Planning Board members expressed concern about the request and requested to see plans for development of the property. The Board asked for

MOMENTS IN TIME

• On March 22, 1947, in response to fears about communism in the United States, President Harry Truman issues an executive decree establishing a sweeping loyalty investigation of federal employees. Loyalty boards were to be set up in every department and agency of the federal government. • On March 23, 1839, the initials “O.K.” are first published, in The Boston Morning Post. Meant as an abbreviation for “oll korrect,” a popular slang misspelling of “all correct,” its popularity exploded when it was picked up by politicians. • On March 24, 1955, Tennessee Williams’ play “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” opens in New York. The play would win Williams his second Pulitzer Prize, following “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 1947. • On March 25, 1933, President Herbert Hoover accepts the newly commissioned USS Sequoia as the official presidential yacht. The Sequoia would go on to serve eight U.S. presidents.

Previously, the Department of Commerce had used it as a decoy to catch Prohibition lawbreakers. • On March 26, 1987, responding to a 911 call, police raid the Philadelphia home of Gary Heidnik and find a veritable torture chamber where three women were chained to a sewer pipe. Heidnik helped inspire the Buffalo Bill character in Thomas Harris’ “Silence of the Lambs.” • On March 27, 1905, the high-profile murder of two London shopkeepers is solved using fingerprint evidence for the first time when a thumbprint found on the side of the cashbox was matched to one of the suspects. • On March 28, 1941, workers start clearing trees from hundreds of acres of land 30 miles west of Detroit, in preparation for construction of the Ford Motor Company’s Willow Run plant, which will build B-24 bomber planes. Early on the plant was plagued by labor shortages and earned the nickname “Willit Run?”

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Use your tax refund wisely It’s tax time again – which for many Americans means that a tax refund is on its way. If you’re going to get a refund this year, how can you use the money to your best advantage? Of course, it’s always tempting to spend the check from Uncle Sam on something fun. But a tax refund could be sizable – the average amount in 2016 was $2,857, according to the IRS – so putting this money to work could help boost your progress toward your financial goals. Here are some possibilities for using your refund: • Help fund your IRA. If you were to receive a tax refund of $2,857, you’d have slightly more than half of the $5,500 annual IRA contribution limit for 2017, although, if you are 50 or older, you can contribute an extra $1,000. Consequently, you may find it much easier to fully fund your IRA for the year – and you should do exactly that, because an IRA is a great retirement savings vehicle. If you have a traditional IRA,

that’s where you keep most of your money, you could take a big hit. Owning an array of investments – such as stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit and so on – can help prepare your portfolio to weather the effects of market volatility. By adding new investments, or increasing your holdings of existing investments, you may be able to further diversify your portfolio – and you can use your refund for this purpose. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss.) • Contribute to a 529 plan. If you have children or grandchildren whom you’d like to help send to college, consider using your tax refund to help fund a 529 plan. Your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes, and your earnings are distributed tax-free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (However, withdrawals not used for higher education expenses may be subject to

both income tax and a 10 percent penalty.) • Pay off some debts. You can help improve your financial picture by reducing your debt load – but it may make sense to prioritize these debts. For example, rather than make an extra mortgage payment, you might want to first tackle those debts or loans that carry a high interest rate and that don’t allow you to deduct interest payments. After all, your monthly mortgage payment will remain the same even if you make an extra payment, but if you can get rid of some smaller debts, you will free up some cash that you could use to invest for your future. Think carefully about how to use your tax refund. It represents an opportunity that you won’t want to waste. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Connel Ware. He may be reached at 116 E. Main St., Jamestown, 336-841-5822.

to wonder about my own transitions, not only from married woman to widow but also from national radio talk-show host to … who knows what?” Rehm’s poignant story of her husband’s gradual dying process touches readers’ heartstrings and, at the same time, shouts out an important and controversial public policy challenge. Her book begins, “On June 14, 2014, my husband, John Rehm – age eightythree – began his withdrawal from life. The aides at Brighton Gardens were instructed to stop bringing medications, menus, or water.” Later in the book she describes how John’s illness, Parkinson’s, gradu-

ally took away his ability to care for himself, even with Diane’s help. She describes the pain both felt when it came time for him to move from their apartment into an extended care facility. She writes, “One of the first feelings that strikes me is Guilt, with a capital G. I’ve wrestled with my conscience and the conviction that I should have taken care of John myself during his final year and a half. But that would have meant giving up my career, and I wasn’t ready to do that. And John wouldn’t have wanted me to do that.” But, she continues, “There are moments when the feelings of guilt are overwhelming.” Every spouse and every child who has guided a declining family member away from the home that was a loving base knows those feelings of guilt. Knowing that Diane Rehm has gone through the same sad experience will bring comfort to many readers. As John’s condition deteriorated and he could do nothing for himself, he wanted to die and sought a way to end his life. He told his physician “that because

Parkinson’s disease had so affected him that he no longer had the use of his hands, arms, or legs, because he could no longer stand, walk, eat, bathe, or in any way care for himself on his own, he was now ready to die.” But when he asked his doctor to help with drugs that would simply “put him to sleep,” his doctor told him that state law in Maryland would not allow it. John was angry. His doctor explained that he could bring about his own death within a couple of weeks by stopping eating and drinking. John followed that pathway, and death came, just not at a time when Diane and their children were with him. Diane is still angry. She writes, “I rage at a system that would not allow John to be helped toward his own death.” Not all of her fans will agree with her controversial advocacy for laws permitting medically assisted suicide. But all of them will be grateful for her moving description of the loss of her husband and how it put her On My Own.

much as the muscle mass to reduce risk of death. The study jibes with one from two years ago that determined that BMI levels aren’t as important as body composition – in other words, muscle mass. How do seniors gain muscle mass? It’s not easy, as we tend to start losing muscle at about age 40.

The first step to build muscle is to consult your doctor before you change your diet or start any new kind of exercise. Ask if the following changes are correct for you: Protein – While it helps build muscle, seniors shouldn’t get too much because it can stress the kidneys. This is where your doctor can help calculate how much you should get in a day. Carbs – We need to burn these for energy. Without carbohydrates you’ll use protein for energy, instead

of using your protein to build muscles. Water – You need the right amount to help absorb the nutrients in your food. Again, your doctor can calculate it for you. Measure the amount of water you should have in a day and keep it handy on the counter or in the fridge. Working out – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has put a 126-page book online called Growing Stronger for seniors who want to start strength training. Look for it at www.cdc.gov.

Losing radio’s Diane Rehm Diane Rehm’s scheduled visit to Elon University on April 6 is reminding fans of her public radio program how much they miss her since her retirement at the beginning of this year. For 37 years her morning talk show made her one of America’s most influential people. Her program attracted smart and articulate guests from diverse points of view. Her respectful, sometimes halting questions, prompted conversation that challenged her listeners to reassess their positions on important issues. When she faced a personal health battle with a rare neurological disorder, spasmodic dysphonia, something that affected her voice and threatened her career, she prevailed and made her unique voice a signature asset and an inspiration for others. In her recent book, On My Own, Rehm deals with other challenges she has faced, including the long, gradual decline and eventual death of her husband, John. Dealing with his death and her pending retirement, she wrote, “I began

That’s according to researchers who spent eight years surveying 6,400 patients with cardiovascular disease. They divided the patients into four groups: high muscle/high fat, high muscle/low fat, low muscle/high fat and low muscle/low fat. The winners (those with improved survival odds) were those with the high muscle/low fat combination. The level of fat doesn’t matter as

State of heart surgery advancing with new techniques By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer The goal of medical research is to find better ways to diagnose, treat and cure disease. Over the years many advances have been made allowing for more positive outcomes for patients. Among those advances are innovative procedures to treat various heart and coronary artery diseases, especially better surgical options. Dr. Steven Chapman, a cardiothoracic surgeon with UNC Regional Physicians Cardiothoracic Surgery, discussed some of these options during a recent program at Millis Regional Health Education Center in High Point. “Techniques have been developed to avoid opening the sternum and the breast bone and to avoid using cardio-pulmonary bypass, or heart-lung machine, due to potential organ damage that it might cause,” said Chapman. “Most minimally invasive surgeries, how-

DR. STEVEN CHAPMAN ever, have significant disadvantages and, therefore, traditional open technique has remained the gold standard and it is used by most cardiac surgeons in the country.” Traditional open-heart

surgery involves an incision made in the chest through the breastbone. The heart is stopped and a bypass machine takes over the work of the heart and lungs. This type of procedure is most commonly

used to repair or replace heart valves and to bypass arteries clogged due to cardiovascular disease. Although, according to Chapman, this procedure is the gold standard for treating certain conditions, it is not without risks including infection, heart attack or stroke, organ failure, blood clot and memory loss. “However, we are seeing excellent results using some of these minimally invasive techniques,” said Chapman. “These early results are very encouraging.” Chapman went on to describe several of these procedures including minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB), off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB), hybrid coronary bypass, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and robotic lung surgery. The MIDCAB option avoids stopping the heart and using the heart-lung machine. Instead, a much smaller incision between the ribs on the left side of the chest is used. In the

OPCAB procedure, however, the chest is opened as in traditional surgery yet the heart is not stopped, thus there is no need for the bypass machine. Hybrid coronary bypass combines two standard treatments for coronary artery disease: angioplasty with stents and artery bypass graft surgery. In this procedure, a cardiologist will place stents in certain blocked arteries while a cardiothoracic surgeon connects bypass grafts. This essentially brings the catheterization lab into the operating room in order to avoid open-heart surgery. TAVR repairs the heart valve without removing the old, damaged valve. The new valve is put in place through a catheter. TAVR can be especially useful for those patients who are poor candidates for other surgical procedures. Chapman said this option, and others, are relatively new and require a specialized operating room, which is hoped to be available later this year at High Point Regional UNC Health Care.

Robotic cardiac surgery is done through very small cuts in the chest. With the use of tiny instruments and robot-controlled tools, surgeons are able to operate in a way that is much less invasive. “The robot precisely mimics the movements of my hands,” said Chapman. “It is unbelievable how it works. There is a better outcome for the patient, which is what we are always after.” For various reasons, some patients are poor candidates for traditional bypass surgery. These minimally invasive techniques might be good options for them. However, Chapman said it is important to discuss all options with your physician and ultimately choose what is best for your particular circumstance.

New interim executive director named for Say Yes Guilford

Nadia Del Valle, National Program Director for Say Yes to Education, has been appointed Interim Executive Director of Say Yes Guilford, the chapter of the national nonprofit organization that serves the 70,000 public and charter school students in Guilford County, North Carolina. Del Valle succeeds Mary Vigue, who is leaving Say Yes Guilford after serving as Executive Director since October 2015, shortly after Say Yes announced that Guilford County had won a national competition to be its latest partner community. The national Say Yes to Education organization said that it would work with the local community partnership to identify a permanent successor to Vigue. “We thank Mary Vigue

for the invaluable role she played in launching Say Yes Guilford, and, in particular, for ensuring this fall that thousands of Guilford County high school students went to colleges and universities with scholarships and other support from Say Yes Guilford and its higher education partners,’’ said Mary Anne SchmittCarey, the president of the national Say Yes to Education organization. “We look forward to working with the leadership of the local partnership as it ramps up the support services it will provide to students and their families so that they are fully prepared to not only seize the opportunity afforded by a scholarship but also to complete a college or other postsecondary education.” Del Valle was the senior

director of Operations and Programs for Say Yes chapter in Buffalo, N.Y., before serving as national program director for Say Yes to Education. Her responsibilities included oversight of expanded learning opportunities, including those offered by the Say Yes Buffalo partnership after school. She was previously executive director of the Erie County Youth Bureau, the upstate New York agency responsible for providing funding to various youth development programs throughout the county. While attending college in California, Del Valle was responsible for the oversight of four youth centers and three community centers located on the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base, providing services to over 2,500 families.

You may be aware that Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus is ending their tours in May this year. The elephants have all gone to the Center for Elephant Conservation, where they have room to roam. The tigers all retire to Big Cat Rescue north of Tampa. Other circus animals will find retirement homes, too. There is no word on what the performers will do with the rest of their talented lives. Some may go on to Cirque du Soleil; some will go to work at the animal retirement facilities. The Greatest Show on Earth was formed in 1881. Their shows were performed under tents called the Big Top. They travelled in trains a mile long. Ringling Brothers began one circus in the west while Barnum and Bailey traveled in the east. When the eastern circus toured Europe, the western circus took over the east. Small circus wars commenced. When Barnum and Bailey returned to the U.S.A., they had to go west, until they combined all three circuses, but then split them again into the red and the blue units. I’m confused too. Some terrific books were written about circuses. Loads of people read or

have heard of Water for Elephants, a bestseller and favorite of book clubs everywhere. Author Sara Gruen tells the story of a 90-year-old man in a nursing home, as he reminisces about his years in a traveling circus. The dramas occur because of the people, as well as the elephant that never forgot the cruelty of one man. Love, jealousy, side show freaks, exotic animals all combine to make this a must read book. Jamestown Library has it on CD, too. If you choose to listen to it, you will miss the photographs, but will hear the story in two voices: that of the old man and that of his younger, not quite out of vet school, self. Truevine is a biography about two albino boys who were kidnapped as they worked in a field and held as sideshow freaks. Their family worked for years to get them back and to get justice for them. Beth Macy traces their lives and the family’s struggle. The Night Circus was written by Erin Morgenstern. This is another good choice for book clubs. It has magic, romance, illusion and circus acts. The circus just appears and is only open at night, offering breathtaking amazements within the black and white striped tent. This is real magic, not just sleight of hand, but the

Now is the time for families to register their students for kindergarten. Families may register at any time, up to and including the beginning of school, but GCS encourages families to enroll in the spring to ensure they receive important communications from school before the first day of class.

To register a student for kindergarten, parents must contact the child’s assigned school, which can be found through GCS’ school assignment locator, and provide a proof of residence, certified birth certificate, immunization (shots) record and a Health Assessment Transmittal Form. While the health

department and pediatricians should have the transmittal form, parents are encouraged to print it out and provide it to their doctors to ensure the correct form is completed. Families may call the GCS Student Assignment Office at 336-370-8303 with any additional questions.

GTCC women headed to national basketball tourney

Guilford Technical Community College’s women’s basketball team has qualified for the 2017 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Women’s National Basketball Tournament March 21-25 in Harrison, Ark. Bobby Allison, GTCC’s women’s basketball coach, said that one of the team’s biggest strengths is their shared ability to play the game. “We have 13 players, and every one of them can play tough,” said Allison, who recently won the 400th game of his coaching career in women’s basketball. “This isn’t just a oneor two-person team; they’re all strong players.” This will be the GTCC women’s basketball team’s third time competing on the national level. They pre-

viously qualified in 2010 and 2015. Allison said that reaching this stage in the tournament proves that the team’s hard work has paid off. “They’ve just kept going and worked hard,” he said. “These were kids who believed in something and went for it.” GTCC’s women’s basketball team will compete against 15 other schools in the NJCAA Division II Women’s Championship in Pioneer Pavilion on the south campus of North Arkansas College. For more information on the NJCAA Division

II Women’s National Championship, visit http:// www.northark.edu/campus-life/athletics/NJCAA-
