McCrory announces raises for teachers By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer Gov. Pat McCrory returned to his alma mater once again to announce plans to raise teacher pay. On April 5, McCrory held a press conference in the media center at Ragsdale High School during which he rolled out the first initiative for the state’s 2017 budget. He proposed a 5 percent average pay increase for all teachers and other certified school personnel as well as a 3.5 percent bonus based on experience. “Today our No. 1 priority is education,” he said. However, McCrory’s focus on education was somewhat diminished by the controversy over HB2. Prior to the press conference, PayPal announced it was withdrawing plans for an expansion in Charlotte that would have created jobs for over 400 people. This withdrawal is a direct
result of HB2, which the General Assembly passed and McCrory signed into legislation March 23. House Bill 2, the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, puts in place a statewide policy banning individuals from using public bathrooms that do not correspond to their biological sex. The bill also reserves the right to pass nondiscrimination legislation to the state government, saying state laws override local ordinances. When pressed on the issue, McCrory said he was focused on what matters to the people of the state. “I want to respect people who disagree with the basic common sense rules that I had here at Ragsdale High School in which boys used the boys locker room and girls used the girls locker room,” he said. “What we’re trying to correct is government overreach which was going to force businesses and our schools to do just the opposite. If
people disagree with that, that’s part of our democratic process and I’m going to respect that. But I also expect to have these basic guidelines of privacy and expectations of privacy respected. I’m not sure what more I can say about that. “I’m here to talk about education, which ties directly to our quality of life and our economic development. I want to focus on the things that are important to the people of North Carolina and education is one of those important things.” McCrory called the pay increase for teachers the center point of the budget. The increase would boost teacher pay, including health and retirement benefits, to an average $66,000 per year. This positions North Carolina above average in teacher pay in the Southeast. The increase is hoped to draw more people to the teaching profession as well as lower teacher attrition. Also, the budget includes

Madison Media Center at Ragsdale High School. an additional investment of $2 million to establish a scholarship program to attract new highly qualified math and science teachers. The push continues to modernize classrooms. The new budget includes an additional $29 million for classrooms resources and teacher training to use new technology. McCrory would commit funds to expand opportunities for special needs students. This funding would provide scholarships for students to attend schools
that could meet their unique needs. Also, the budget includes monies for boosting community college graduation and expanding college access. McCrory said these education initiatives are a fulfillment of his administration’s promise to put teachers first. “I’m very, very proud of this major teacher commitment,” he said. Speaking of the late Ruth Revels, his former teacher at Ragsdale who recently
passed away, McCrory said he believes she would have rewarded him with a gold star for his efforts to help teachers. “This is a priority not only of me, but it is a priority of the people of North Carolina.”

Council discusses projects, budget in special session By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer There are three major projects currently underway or to be started in the next few months in Jamestown. That means there is nothing on the town’s Must Do list for the town’s proposed Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for the 2016-17 or upcoming years. That could be a good news/bad news scenario for both residents and the Town. “We’ve got a lot of things on our plate right now that we’re finishing up,” said Mayor Keith Volz at a special Budget Workshop April 5. “We’re going ahead in 2016 with sidewalks, golf course and clubhouse. “What big things can we look at (now) that citizens would want (in the future)?” “We have so many projects going on now, it’s hard to think of more,” said Councilmember Georgia Nixon-Roney. Volz suggested restoring the lights on the baseball fields at Jamestown Park as well as bringing back the tennis courts and adding disc golf. Council members appeared to agree. “What we’re doing out at the golf course, I think the natural progression is going to do something to
the ball fields as well,” said first-term Councilmember Lawrence Straughn. Volz also looked ahead toward a possible canoe/ kayak put-in area on Deep River as part of the Deep River Paddle Trail. “We have a lot of unique things to offer,” he said, “and that would definitely be a unique thing. “Along with bike trails, that aims toward the idea of a healthy lifestyle (of Jamestown) between two big towns. These are nice amenities to offer citizens to live here.” The town bills itself as a walking community. A sidewalk along Penny Road from West Main Street to the City Lake would complete an approximate 6-mile walking loop of Jamestown. Volz believes High Point is interested in partnering with Jamestown on the sidewalk project. Anticipated annexation of the Koury Corporation property at the Guilford College Road-Jamestown Parkway/Gate City Boulevard intersection will benefit the town’s coffers, but not for a few years. Still, the town’s CIP can reflect these projected assets for several years in the future. “Newer streams of rev-
enue coming into town … we can put into the CIP,” said Volz. “Then we can start planning.” “You need a short-range plan and a long-range plan,” said Councilmember Billy Ragsdale, to be used as money comes available. “It all boils down to money,” said Volz. “It’s planning and patience.” “I don’t have the final CIP projects list sorted as yet,” said Town Manager Chuck Smith. “Funding for many of the proposed capital projects and items are still under review.” Budget Following discussion of the CIP, the Council had the opportunity to review the preliminary budget for 2016-17 and to suggest additions or deletions. “This budget is very preliminary,” said Smith. He added that current expenses exceed revenues. There is no proposed change in the tax rate, however, Smith has proposed a 4 percent water-sewer increase. This is the third straight year the department has seen an increase. “The proposed 4 percent water fee increase is based on a 3.6 percent Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority and 4 percent City
of High Point water rate increase,” Smith said. “The proposed 4 percent sewer rate increase may be adjusted due to a City of High Point proposed 16 percent sewer rate increase for Jamestown which equates to $124,000. “The water and sewer fees revenue are used to purchase water from PTRWA and High Point and pay for treatment of Jamestown’s wastewater at the Eastside Wastewater Treatment facility. “ Smith said the revenues also pay for capital projects such as the new Public Services facility, the PTRWA plant expansion, Eastside WWTF upgrades and the proposed water main replacement along West Main Street between Dillon and Oakdale Roads. Income from the golf course will suffer in midlate 2016 due to the greens renovation while the course is closed. It is expected to be open by Labor Day. The preliminary budget anticipates a loss of nearly onequarter of a million dollars for 2016-17. “On the bright side, we do expect Golf Shop concessions to generate 60 percent more revenue over this year and plan for a success-
ful 2017 calendar year,” Smith said. Other salient points gleaned from the budget meeting include: • Funding for Phase 2 of the Oakdale Road sidewalk project from the railroad tracks to Chimney Court. • Replacement of Christmas decorations along Main Street. • Funds to conduct a tree inventory and maintenance plan. The town will match a grant with in-kind labor, thus no town funding is required. • Repairs will continue on the Town Hall and Fire Department buildings. • Additional funding is being requested for town events, including Jamestown Day, three summer music events in Wrenn Miller Park, the Craft and Yard sale, and Play in the Park at Jamestown Park. • The preliminary budget includes covers to be placed over the new golf course greens to prevent winter kill. • Non-profit grants held steady in 2016-17, with the four agencies requesting grants receiving the same amount as the previous year. • The corridor study proposed by Town Planner
Carrie Spencer is not in the budget the Council saw last week. Her proposal is an 80/20 matching grant with High Point. Spencer is looking for funding options for the town’s 20 percent. The study could be added if requested by the Town Council. • Smith proposed raising the vehicle tax in the General Fund from $5 to $25 per vehicle, bringing in approximately $11,000 for the town’s estimated 2,300 vehicles. This money could be used for street maintenance. Discussions among Council members, however, did not appear to favor Smith’s proposal and the vehicle tax hike was not included in the budget. Smith will present the Budget Message at the May 17 Town Council meeting, with a vote expected at the June 21 meeting. Unrelated to this year’s budget, the Council approved a change order to the Jamestown Park clubhouse renovation project to include siding and roofing for the cart barn to make the two buildings similar in appearance. Council to discuss zoning, water By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer The Jamestown Town Council faces a lengthy agenda for its April 19 meeting, but it appears most of the items can be dealt with quickly. However, some will require discussion. Of interest to not only golfers but town residents is the awarding of the contract for the greens renovation at Jamestown Park Golf Course. Bids were presented
at an April 12 meeting when the decision was made. That bid will be presented to the Town Council for approval. Mayor Keith Volz will continue the discussion on the town’s proposed Mission and Vision statements. Following the Planning Board’s April 11 meeting, the Council will set a date for a public hearing for a rezoning request from Koury Corporation for properties located at the intersection of Guilford College Road and Jamestown Parkway/Gate City Boulevard. The
request is a change from Bypass to Conditional Use Bypass. Koury has also submitted a master signage plan that will be discussed in a second public hearing, date to be determined. The Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority is planning an expansion of the Randleman Reservoir water treatment facility to 14.7 million gallons per day, up from 12 mgd. The expansion would allot Jamestown a larger share of water coming from the facility. That means the town would no longer have to purchase
the additional water needed from High Point. (Jamestown News, March 30). Exactly how much the town would receive is based on the number of PTRWA members who agree to participate in the expansion. At the April 19 meeting, Town Manager Chuck Smith will discuss the town’s rerating allocation. The Town Council will meet in the council chambers at town hall at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

April is National Safe Digging Month This April marks the ninth annual National Safe Digging Month, reminding North Carolina residents to always call 811 three working days before any digging project. National Safe Digging Month is formally recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate and has traditionally earned the support from nearly every state governor across the country. When calling 811, homeowners and contractors are connected to NC811, the local one call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of their intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags, paint or both. Every six minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first calling 811. Striking a single line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a call to 811. Installing a mailbox,
building a deck and planting a tree or garden are all examples of digging projects that should only begin a few days after a call to 811. “As April marks the traditional start of digging season, we are using this month to strongly encourage individuals and companies to call 811 before they begin digging,” said Louis Panzer, executive director of NC811. “By calling 811 to have the underground utility lines in their area marked, homeowners and professionals are making an important decision that can help keep them and their communities safe and connected.” The depth of utility lines can vary for a number of reasons, such as erosion, previous digging projects and uneven surfaces. Utility lines need to be properly marked because even when digging only a few inches, the risk of striking an underground utility line still exists. NC811 encourages area residents to visit www. nc811.org or www.call811. com for more information about digging safely.

Pinwheel garden blooms at GSO police station
On Wednesday, April 13 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m., the Greensboro Child Response Initiative will be hosting a Pinwheels for Prevention community event to raise awareness about preventing child abuse. The Pinwheel Garden will be “planted” in front of the Greensboro Police Department’s Patrol Division 4 substation at 1106 Maple St. The event will include representation and contributions from more than 30 partners, including City Council, County Commissioners, the Kellin Foundation, Backpack Beginnings, Ready for School-Ready for Life, the
Cemela Foundation and many others. Pinwheels for Prevention® is a national campaign to create awareness about the role all individuals play in the healthy development and growth of our nation’s children. This is the third year that the organization has held this event. It is free and open to the public. “Preventing child abuse and neglect and making sure children grow up
in safe, stable, nurturing homes and communities is one of the best things we can do to positively impact the future of our families,” said Dr. Kelly Graves who co-developed CRI and leads the program. “Planting the pinwheel garden is our effort to promote a call to action. It represents our hope that every adult will play an active role in supporting the children and families in our community.”
GSO Fire Department tests hydrants The Greensboro Fire Department is conducting its semi-annual fire hydrant testing April 18 through May 18. All city hydrants will be tested to ensure that they are operable and able to produce the required water pressure when needed. Because this testing must be done during normal operating hours, it will be impossible to know in advance just where or when the testing will take place in any specific
area. Opening hydrants can sometimes cause a temporary discoloration of water in nearby homes. The discoloration is not harmful in any way and can be cleared up by running the water for a few minutes. If you observe a hydrant which is out of service or experiencing problems, contact the City of Greensboro Water Department at 336-3732033. The Fire Department tests the
hydrants, but does not perform any maintenance. This kind of testing not only ensures the protection of Greensboro’s residents, it also is an evaluation indicator used by the Insurance Services Office, which rates cities according to the fire protection they offer. The ISO rating resulted in the elevation of the Greensboro Fire Department to a Class 1 protection rating in 1997, the best rating possible.
Guilford County confirms fifth case of animal rabies this year The Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, is alerting residents that a bat found in the 2400 block of Regents Park Lane in Greensboro tested positive for the rabies virus on March 29. Exposures are being determined. This is the fifth confirmed case of animal rabies in 2016. North Carolina law requires that all domestic pets (cats, dogs and
ferrets), whether living inside or outside, age four months or older be vaccinated. Even animals that are confined in outdoor fenced areas should have current rabies vaccinations, because wild animals can get into these areas and attack your pets. Rabies continues to circulate within our wildlife population all year around. The best way to protect your family and your pet’s safety is to vac-
cinate your pets against rabies. Check to make sure all of your family pets are properly vaccinated against rabies and get their shots updated as needed. A simple rabies vaccination can protect your pets against this dangerous health risk. Garden party creates memories and raises funds for community service By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Moments in time can be captured with photographs. They can also be captured as memories of something or someone special that a person wants to recall. For members of the Sedgefield Woman’s Club it was a little of both as they gathered for the group’s annual spring garden party fundraiser. “When we were trying to think of a theme for the spring event we talked about going back in time to a simpler lifestyle and highlighting members’ photos,” said Cindy Baggett, cochair for the event. “We came up with the idea, ‘A Moment In Time.’” Along with Baggett, Kelly Butler served as cochair. Committee members included Teka Bryan, Stephanie Martin, Stacy Miller, Sara Collins, Paige Daniels, Marta Evans, Margot Jozefowicz, Laurie Kovak, Jennifer Yorks, Blair Kopf, Becky Arrington and Adele Filip. As guests arrived, they were greeted to a large display of pictures of members in days past arranged in the foyer outside the ballroom at Sedgefield Country Club. Blair Kopf, incoming president for the 2016-2018 Sedgefield Woman’s Club, captured a moment in time by wearing favorite jewelry pieces from her maternal grandmother’s collection. “They just seemed to fit the occasion,” she said with a smile. But it was memories shared and made as members greeted, hugged and enjoyed time together that highlighted their moments in time at the April 8 event. As much fun as that was, the group did not forget the main reason they had come. The spring garden party helps raise money to fund the club’s many community projects. Each member donated items to be used for a silent auction, then graciously opened their purses to buy items they liked for their personal use or for gifts. As with their Christmas auction, a variety of cakes, candies and cookies were available for sale. Plants and other indoor and outdoor home décor filled other tables, creating a range of items from which to choose. After the bidding started, participants could be seen keeping a watchful eye on the items they wanted, hoping to make the final bid and carry home their prize.
Blair Kopf, above, captures a moment in time as she enjoys wearing her grandmother’s jewelry. Once bidding ceased, the ladies settled down to learn if they were the lucky winners of raffle items represented by bags into which they dropped tickets they had purchased. Many of this year’s prizes included a combination of shopping and eating experiences. Excitement in the room ran high as ticket after ticket was pulled and guests realized their numbers had been drawn. A final drawing for those who had contributed photos for the display awarded a prize to Jamie Soule. Leslie Scher, chair of the education committee, introduced Elizabeth Stamey, the 2015 Mary Eakes Scholarship winner. Stamey plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and major in psychology and continue graduate work for a degree in speech pathology. “Singing is a passion for me and I hope to audition for a musical group at Chapel Hill,” Stamey said. In addition to participating in Ragsdale High School’s choir Rhythm and Rhapsody, Stamey is also active in other school activities, her church and

Corridor study for Main Street is unnecessary Editor: Jamestown News (4/6/16) article “Corridor Study would aid business, vehicle issues” surely is a misprint, right? Taxpayers feel far too many studies have been done and all they’re doing is spending taxpayers’ money that we no longer have. I’m quoting: “‘Main Street is part of a major thoroughfare that is the only EastWest connection between GreensboroHigh Point,’ Spencer said in a memo to the Jamestown planning board in February.” Since no one in Jamestown remembers me and many more working for years (our time and our money) trying to get bypass put over to Business 85, which is from Greensboro to High Point; therefore, Main Street is not the only connection to High Point-Greensboro. At that time, the Jamestown politicians didn’t want to hear of it. Anyone remember this? As for any more studies and spending taxpayers’ money uselessly, it’s time to eliminate the tax and spenders and send them packing. Enough damage has been done to Jamestown and, as the old saying
Letters to the Editor goes, “now is the time for all good things to come to an end!” Any questions? Shirley deLong Jamestown Ed. note: Spencer was speaking of Main Street through Jamestown being the only connection between the cities and was not alluding to nearby Business 85 or Wendover Avenue. HB2 should be repealed I believe that all adult citizens should have the same rights. I also think that local governments should be allowed to pass legislation that protects individuals that are discriminated against, especially when the state government won’t. Because of this I think that House Bill 2 should be repealed. I have started a petition online. I would like you to go to Change.org, look up Repeal House Bill 2, and sign it. Thanks. Like actors, putting ourselves in the shoes of others to understand How hard is it for a white person to really understand the black experience well enough not to get into trouble when speaking about hot-button matters of community concern? Ask Hillary Clinton. Or ask her husband, the former president. Both have spent their lives working to improve the economic conditions of blacks and to increase the opportunities available to them. They take pride in their close associations with African Americans. But, when it comes to talking about race, they have proved that anybody can get into trouble. It makes one wonder why a white author like North Carolina native and bestselling author Robert Morgan would take on a project that involves writing from the perspectives of two escaped slaves making their ways from enslavement to someplace where they can be free. Morgan grew up in the mountains near Hendersonville close to where his popular novel, Gap Creek, was set. His latest, Chasing the North Star, begins in nearby South Carolina, where a crafty teenaged runaway slave named Jonah Williams begins a northward journey towards freedom. Along the way, his adventures and his contacts with the people he meets are reminiscent of those of Inman, the Civil War soldier in Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain. Early on he meets a young enslaved woman
by guest columnist D.G. Martin named Angel, who decides to follow him. Sometimes together, sometimes separated, they make their sometimes different ways towards freedom, beginning in a stolen small boat drifting past Asheville on the French Broad River, then walking to Kingsport, stopping at the backdoors of big houses and begging for a piece of cornpone or something else to eat. In Roanoke, Va., they find work in a high-class brothel. There are close calls and adventures on every pathway and at every stop. After a miraculous escape from jail in Winchester, Va., and a dangerous ride in a railroad boxcar, the two make their way into Pennsylvania and, finally, to Ithaca, N.Y. Morgan himself has traveled that same route, from where he grew up in the Carolinas to Ithaca, where he has long taught at Cornell. “They were in more trouble than they knew,” Morgan told me when we talked about the book

recently. He was referring to the Fugitive Slave Act, which made all slaves, even those who escaped to the North, subject to being captured by bounty hunters and returned to their owners. Morgan’s Jonah and Angel won me over with their spirit, determination and the craftiness and luck that got them out of every difficult situation. After every episode, I wanted to keep reading to see how they would get to and through the next challenge. Still, I wondered whether African-American readers would respond positively to an adventure of two blacks created by a white man. I think Morgan has approached the task sensitively. For instance, instead of having Jonah and Angel speak in a heavy dialect that might be seen as patronizing, their speech is more like that of modern teenagers. I pressed Morgan about the risks of a contemporary white male getting into the shoes and mindsets of young, enslaved people living 160 years ago. In response, he scolded me a little bit. He explained that good fiction cannot just be writing about ourselves or what we know already. Otherwise, the result is simply autobiography. The best fiction, he says, comes with characters the author creates based on careful research and then steps into those characters, like actors playing important roles. A good author, Morgan says, has to be like a good actor and fill the role of the created characters. It is no accident, he told me, “that the world’s greatest writer (Shakespeare) was an actor.”

Can you make your investments less ‘taxing’? Tax Freedom Day, which typically occurs in late April, according to the Tax Foundation, is the day when the nation as a whole has earned enough money to pay off its total tax bill for the year. So you may want to use this opportunity to determine if you can liberate yourself from some investment-related taxes in the future. Actually, Tax Freedom Day is something of a fiction, in practical terms, because most people pay their taxes throughout the year via payroll deductions. Also, you may not mind paying your share of taxes, because your tax dollars are used in many ways – such as law enforcement, food safety, road maintenance, public education and so on – that, taken together, have a big impact on the quality of life in this country. Still, you may want to look for ways to reduce those taxes associated with your investments, leaving you more money available to meet your important goals, such as a comfortable retirement. So, what moves can you make to become more of a “tax-smart” investor? Consider the following: • Know when to hold ’em. If you sell an investment that you’ve held for less than one year, any profit you earn is considered a short-term capital gain, and it will be taxed at the same rate as your ordinary income. (For
by guest columnist Connel Ware 2016, ordinary income tax rates range from 10 percent to 39.6 percent.) But if you hold the investment for longer than one year, your profit will be taxed at the long-term capital gains rate, which, for most taxpayers, will be just 15 percent. If at all possible, then, hold your investments at least long enough to qualify for the lower capital gains rate. • Look for the dividends. Similar to longterm capital gains, most stock dividends are taxed at 15 percent for most taxpayers. Thus, dividend-paying stocks can provide you with an additional source of income at a tax rate that’s likely going to be lower than the rate on your ordinary earned income. As an added benefit, many dividend-paying stocks also offer growth potential. With some research, you can find stocks that have paid, and even increased, their dividends over a period of many years. (Be

aware, though, that companies are not obligated to pay dividends and can reduce or discontinue them at their discretion.) • Use those tax-advantaged accounts. Virtually all retirement accounts available to you, whether you’ve set them up yourself or they’re made available by your employer, offer some type of tax advantage. With a traditional IRA, or a 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan, your contributions are typically tax-deductible and your earnings can grow tax deferred. Contributions to a Roth IRA, or a Roth 401(k), are never deductible, but earnings can grow tax free, provided you meet certain conditions. The bottom line? Contribute as much as you can afford to the tax-advantaged plans to which you have access. Tax Freedom Day is here and then it’s gone. But by making some tax-smart investment decisions, you might reap some benefits for years to come.

Mendenhall homecoming focuses on artifacts By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer In recent years, the Historic Jamestown Society has focused on many ways to revitalize the Mendenhall Homeplace. Historical research continues to be done, cleaning has been accomplished throughout the property and soon chimneys on the 200-plus-yearold house will be replaced. Volunteers, affectionately named “The Thursday Ladies” for the day they come, have gone through files and boxes, categorizing the history, not only of the Homeplace, but of Jamestown and many of the original families who settled the town 200 years ago. Through outreach, many artifacts have been acquired. They will be on display to the public in an exclusive preview of Mendenhall family furniture, quilts, documents and photos on April 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the Homeplace. “Within the last year, a number of historically significant

Guilford County’s spring cleanup set for April 16 Guilford County residents can dispose of their household hazardous waste, outdated electronics, tires, appliances and personal documents for free at the County’s annual Spring Cleanup on April 16 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Staff from Guilford County and the City of Greensboro will be ready to collect these waste items at the Lee Street parking lot, located at 1730 W. Lee St. across from the Greensboro Coliseum. The event is open to all Guilford County residents. Business waste is not accepted through this program. Last year, 747 vehicles dropped off more than 13 tons of electron-
ics and TVs, seven tons of household hazardous waste, 14 tons of tires, two tons of appliances and scrap metal and 14 tons of personal documents. This year, county staff members are making preparations to collect more of these materials at this popular annual event. Guilford County Planning and Development is again partnering with the City of Greensboro to offer this secure, free and environmentally sound way for residents to dispose of many types of waste they have in their homes. The event is part of the County’s environmental awareness campaign: “For PETE’s sake
RECYCLE!” By participating in the 2016 Spring Cleanup, residents keep valuable commodities and toxic materials out of our landfills, ensuring they will be reused or recycled safely instead. Shred Ace, a new sponsor to the event, will be offering free onsite shredding services for residents. Residents can drop-off the following items: Tires, white goods (appliances – stoves, refrigerators, washers, air conditioners, water heaters, microwaves, etc.), paint and supplies, pesticides, antifreeze, motor oil and oil filters, cleaners, batteries, household and garden
Myth Buster – Eating well does not have to cost a lot
By LEANNE ELY Dinner Diva
Everyone’s concerned about watching the grocery budget these days, and rightly so. Food costs are climbing, and there’s no sign of this trend stopping anytime soon. I’m often met with resistance when I talk about eating nutritious foods (especially as part of a Paleo lifestyle) because people claim they can’t afford to eat healthy. To be honest, it can seem expensive at first, especially if you’re looking at the $15 package of chicken breasts when you know you can buy a frozen lasagna for $5 that will easily feed your family of four. I could sit here all day and tell you that eating a healthy diet will pay for itself in spades in the long run, but the fact is, we only have so much money to spend on food. So, the following tips will help you stretch your grocery budget, even if you’re a Paleoista. Purchase ingredients and not packages. Stop looking for the healthiest granola bars or gluten-free brownies on the shelf. Instead, buy ingredients to make your own healthy snacks (Blending a banana and some Medjool dates tastes like a homemade Larabar). Or, even better, eat nature’s own snack foods by eating whole foods like apples, berries and seeds. Same thing goes for foods like almond flour – if it comes in a bag, there’s a chance you can make your own. If you have a good food processor, buy some natural almonds in bulk and
ground them into flour. If it’s a really good machine, you can make your own almond butter and almond milk, too. Make your own condiments. If you aren’t Paleo, but want to eat healthier buy organic corn kernels for your weekly movie night. Purchase dried beans instead of canned and cook them yourself. See where I’m going with this? Stop looking for convenience because convenience is expensive, y’all. Buy frozen fruits and veggies in bulk. Frozen produce is just as nutritious as fresh, and it’s much more affordable to purchase frozen than it is fresh. I always suggest people buy enough fresh produce like lettuce, asparagus, broccoli and zucchini to use at the beginning of the week, and then have frozen on hand for the last part of the week. This stretches the budget a bit and allows for less food spoilage. Rethink your meat purchases. Protein is expensive, but there are ways to save money in the meat department. Buy whole chickens, and cut them into pieces yourself rather than buying the more expensive chicken pieces where the work has been done for you. When it comes to beef, choose less expensive cuts and learn how to cook them properly. Those cheap cuts can be the tastiest if you cook them low and slow by braising or stewing them. An even better way to save on meat costs is to get together with some neighbors and see about sharing the cost of a whole cow or pig to put in your freezers.
It seems like an expensive purchase up front, but it will pay for itself over the course of six months or so. Know what needs to be bought organic. Shop according to the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 to ensure you’re eliminating the greatest amount of pesticides from your diet without going broke to do so. You can see an updated list at ewg.org, where you’ll learn that potatoes and apples should always be purchased organic (so if your budget doesn’t allow for those items, buy conventionally grown sweet potatoes and mangoes instead). Stop splurging. Look for unnecessary items in your cart and remove them. You don’t really need to spend $4 on bottled water. You also don’t need those individual coffee pods. Take a good look at your home and see which nonessential items you are wasting your money on (this includes junk food and “treats”). Stick to the list. Make a meal plan at the beginning of each week and make your shopping list according to that plan. At the store, stick to the list. Being prepared like this, having a list that corresponds to the meals you need to make for dinner each day, also prevents trips to the grocery store throughout the week to pick up a missing ingredient. Leanne Ely is a NYT bestselling author and the creator of http:// SavingDinner.com, the original menu planning website, bringing families back to the dinner table for over 15 years.
chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and other types of household hazardous waste E-waste, including computers, televisions, electronic games and toys, cell phones, VHS and DVD players, stereo equipment and any other household items with a microchip or a plug. Personal documents for shredding are limited to a maximum of three boxes per vehicle. Many of these services are available year-round to county residents. However, some, like tire disposal and document shredding, are not always free of charge. Spring Cleanup 2016 will provide free services while help-
ing raise public awareness about safe, responsible disposal of these materials. The event is also designed to assist the community in complying with the North Carolina landfill bans that apply to tires, large appliances, antifreeze, lead acid batteries, used oil filters, computer equipment and televisions. The annual Spring Cleanup is sponsored by Guilford County Planning and Development, Greensboro Field Operations, Greensboro Coliseum and Shred Ace.

‘Play at the Park’ comes to Jamestown By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer
For the past four years, the town hosted an Easter Egg Hunt Festival at the Turner Athletic Field at Jamestown Park. Unpredictable weather plagued the event so town officials have reimagined it for all ages as “Play at the Park,” April 16, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., again at Jamestown Park, 7041 East Fork Road. The purpose of the new event is to promote recreation at the park – including the golf course – and to draw more people to the park for family fun.
There will be organized flag football, baseball, basketball, soccer and volleyball events. Stroll over to the playground area for horseshoes and cornhole. For golfers, there will be half-price driving range buckets and two-for-one play after 12 p.m. Pay for one golfer and the second plays free. Free Junior Golf Clinics will be offered from noon1 p.m. for ages 8-10 and 1:30-2:30 p.m. for ages 11-13.
Titanic Disaster By CAROL REED Jamestown Public Library Where were you on April 15, 1912, at 2:20 in the morning? Most of us were not yet born, but we all know about the disaster that followed the RMS Titanic striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic. If there had been enough lifeboats, the tragedy could have been minimalized, but less than half the people could get on lifeboats. Many of those boats were sent from the ship not filled to capacity. The “women and children first” rule meant that lots of men drowned. The wealthy or upper decks were evacuated first, leaving the poor emigrants from Ireland and Scandinavian to die. This “indestructible” ship was on her maiden voyage from England to New York, carrying 2,224 passengers and crew. More than 1,500 people died, with about 705 being saved by a ship steaming to the rescue. Books, films, documentaries, essays, editorials and more were, and still are, being written about it. For some reason, disasters and mysteries fascinate people. Mary Pope Osborne’s Magic Treehouse adventure with Jack and Annie in Tonight on the Titanic is one popular example. The children
find themselves whisked aboard that fateful ship, not certain if they will survive. Mary’s husband Will Osborne wrote a companion to the early chapter book. It is a research guide filled with information about icebergs, survivors, heroes and real children on the ship. I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 is for older elementary children and is another popular example. Other titles in Lauren Tarshis’ series are I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005, I Survived the Japanese Tsunami, 2011 and I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941. All of these books help children realize that real people lived and died during these horrible times. Perhaps it will make our children a bit more sympathetic to disaster victims and survivors. Then there are nonfiction books like Titanic: Voices from the Disaster by Deborah Hopkinson. This book draws on stories from survivors and archival photographs to describe the Titanic, from its launch to its sinking. For people looking for information on this famous ship, try checking out this book. If you want more visual detail, watch a great film called Titanic: the

Community effort creates new teachers’ lounge for Union Hill Elementary staff By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer With the vision of Union Hill Elementary School Principal Shayla Savage and the help of a caring community, an empty 24-square-foot room at the school has been transformed into a state-ofthe-art teachers’ lounge. Comfortable seating areas, tables and chairs, desk space and a television made the room the perfect place to not only take a brief break, but also to enjoy lunch, have teachers’ meetings or training sessions. In the future, a “brag board,” on which staff members can post pictures of students and/or family, will be added to the room. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the room was

staff to enjoy lunch and discussed the possibility of converting the room into a lounge with the High Point Chamber of Commerce. “I wanted to show my staff that they are appreciated,” she said. “I believe it is part of my job to take care of the staff and they in turn will take care of the kids.” Having received a generous donation toward the purchase of furniture, when Savage began to look at prices she realized it would not be enough. As different individuals, businesses, churches and groups stepped up to help, however, the lounge became a true oasis from the busy
work schedule for the staff at Union Hill. The first donors to the teachers’ lounge were Phil and Shari Driscoll. Other donors included the company of Edward Ferrell & Lewis Mittman (Gregg Arrington, vice president of operations), along with a network of manufacturers, suppliers, designers and retailers from North Carolina Furniture Institute. Donations from Erwin Lambeth Company, Marquis Seating and Jamestown Presbyterian Church also helped make the lounge a reality. “The end result was truly a team effort,” Savage said.

If you feed birds, feed them well
If you’re feeding wild birds already, you know they become much like your pets. If you haven’t tried bird feeding you might want to start. Watching wild birds at feeders, right outside your window, is truly an enjoyable pastime. Seeing beautiful birds at the feeder is not only a beautiful sight it encourages feeding good quality feed, not only for nutritional reasons, but also to attract certain species of birds and large numbers of birds at the feeder. Have you ever wondered what’s in one of your favorite packaged foods, grabbed the box from your pantry, read the ingredients list and realized you still didn’t know what you were eating? The ingredients in some processed foods can read like a chemist’s shopping list. Now imagine if your backyard birds could read. What would they say about the ingredients in the food
The type of food you put out will determine the kind of birds that come to your feeder. you feed them? A growing number of Americans are choosing natural foods for their pets; nearly a third say they prefer natural products, according to PetFoodIndustry.com. People who feed wild birds care about them just as much as their four-legged pets and want to know they’re feeding their backyard birds the most natu-
ral and nutritious options available. It’s hard to feel that confidence when reading the mystifying ingredient list on the feed bag makes you feel like a bird brain. The wild bird experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products Co. offer some tips for ensuring you’re feeding your feathered friends a healthy, natural diet that
As I See It
by Shirley Adkins, Womack Publishing, Star Tribune I love the story in John 11 about Jesus raising His friend Lazarus from the dead. It has many lessons for us. Verse 35 is commonly called the shortest verse in the Bible. “Jesus wept.” Have you ever wondered why? Yes, his friend had died, but Jesus could have prevented that. His friends Mary and Martha were deep in grief over the loss of their brother. Jesus’ tears were probably empathetic. But, I wonder if another reason Jesus wept was because He knew where Lazarus was (in Heaven) and that he would be brought back here to live and die all over again. This is purely speculation on my part, of course. Another thing that strikes me about this event is the reaction of the sisters when Jesus arrived. They actually reprimanded Jesus. “Lord, if you had been here this wouldn’t have happened.” Sometimes in our grief we are apt to lash out at God. Trust me, He understands. And Jesus knew the women were speaking from grief. When Jesus got to the grave site, He told someone to roll the stone away from the cave entrance. Now, it had been four days since Lazarus died (and he wasn’t embalmed, as we do today) and decomposition had set in. Four days is significant. People of that time and culture believed that when a person died, the spirit hovered around the body for three days. Since Lazarus had been dead four days, they would have known that his spirit was not there anymore. After the stone was rolled away, Jesus prayed…. thanking God for hearing Him. Now, here is something else I have thought about. Jesus called (with a loud voice) for Lazarus to come out of the grave. I’ve wondered why Jesus didn’t go in and bring him out. Probably because by Lazarus coming out on his own, it proved to be a real miracle. Also, why did Jesus call him out with a loud voice? Was it so Lazarus could hear Him or so everyone else could hear Him? (I’ve often wondered if it was to urge Lazarus to come back) After this miraculous event, I wonder what Jesus and Lazarus talked about. Heaven? Was Jesus asking about what Cousin John (the Baptist) was doing or Moses or Elijah? Wish I could have been a “fly on the wall” during some of their chats. So, the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead has many lessons for us. The most important is to trust our Lord and Savior. Mary and Martha knew that Jesus could have saved their brother from death. They believed in Him. But, did they trust that He could raise someone from the dead? We must learn to trust God with everything, even if it seems like something bad at the time. He can bring good from everything. “I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25) That pretty much says it all, don’t you think?
they’ll appreciate: • Avoid seed blends that are full of cheap fillers, like oats and red milo. Fillers not only lack nutritional value, birds will kick them right out of the feeder. Select natural feed comprised of top-of-the-crop seeds and pass by seed coated with chemicals and mineral oil. • Take note of ingredients you can’t read, often it’s an indication the ingredient is a synthetic or lab engineered. Ingredients like Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex and Thiamine Mononitrate aren’t found in natural food, they’re man-made versions of vitamins. Since wild birds normally get all their vitamins and nutrients from natural sources, adding a synthetic version is questionable at best. The rule of thumb for buying all natural is if you can’t read it, don’t feed it. • Focus on serving feed with an ingredient list you can read and understand. For example, Cole’s Sunflower Meats contains
nothing but shelled sunflower seeds. Easy, right? It’s a favorite feed to a wide range of backyard birds, too. • Either get to know the types of birds visiting your feeder and research feed they prefer, or buy feed from a reputable company who has already done that work for you. Cole’s offers select natural seed choices developed and based on factual research about what birds really eat. Feed is specifically formulated to attract certain species of birds as well as the largest number of birds, too. When you know and serve what your backyard birds prefer, you’ll keep them coming back to your feeders. • Feel free to supplement seed and feed with natural food you already have at home. For example, jays and woodpeckers love raw peanuts, while mockingbirds and orioles love fruit, and chickadees, blue jays and cardinals savor suet. Soak raisins and currants in water overnight, then place them on a table feeder, or
purchase blends with a dried fruit and nut mixture, like Nutberry Suet Blend. To attract orioles and tanagers, skewer halved oranges onto a spike near your feeders for a special treat. • Don’t forget the importance of the right type of feeder. Dish and bowl feeders are great for serving fruits, while most birds will appreciate a terrific tube feeder for seeds both large and small. Traditional tube feeders are great all-purpose feeders, and a musthave for backyard bird feeding. • Buy feed from companies who specialize in wild bird food. Some companies offer bird feed as a side product to their main business of pet products or grass seed. Cole’s exclusively produces and sells products for feeding backyard birds.

Successful art show and auction worth repeating again and again By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Just because something proves successful once, is it worth repeating? The staff and students in the visual arts classes at Ragsdale High School think so. The result was the second annual Art Show and Silent Art Auction held April 5 inside the entrance to the school’s Arts and Athletic building. “Staff and members of the community who missed it last year were sorry and wanted us to do it again, and the ones who came enjoyed it so much they wanted us to do it again too,” said Jennifer Pfeiffer, an AP art teacher at Ragsdale and advisor to the Art Club. The repeat included a silent auction for window art crafted by AP students and members of the Art Club. Real windows of various shapes and sizes provided the canvases on which artists painted an image of their choice. Some were painted on the outside of the window and some on the inside. A few students elected to paint parts of their painting on each side,
providing an extra depth to their design. Rosie Burr and Marilou and Tom May donated windows for the project. Burr, who owns Floral Prism, also donated a stained glass picture for the prize in a raffle drawing. There were a total of 15 windows for sale. Participants purchased a $2 ticket in order to bid. Sufficient time was allotted for interested buyers to look over the windows and make their bids while enjoying refreshments, background music provided by a DJ and displays of artwork by underclassmen and senior AP students. The staff of the visual arts department at Ragsdale includes Pfeiffer, Anne Popek and Rachel Moore. Student teacher Sierra Clark also helped with the auction and art show. “It was a great night,” Pfeiffer said. “We raised just under $300 this year.” A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to Duke cancer research in memory of the late Teresa Vernon. Hannah Vernon, Teresa and David Vernon’s daughter, is a junior at Ragsdale
and president of the Art Club. Hannah’s brother, Thomas, a freshman, calls himself an honorary Art Club member because he often attends the group’s functions. Some of the funds will be used for activities and supplies so all Art Club students can afford to participate. The Ragsdale Art Club, which is in its second year, has 22 members. “We dropped the morning meetings this year,” said Pfeiffer, who began the Art Club last year and also helps coach women’s basketball. “We typically meet twice a month and average between 10-15 at each meeting.” Pfeiffer views the auction as more than a fundraiser for the club. “The main reason we started the event was so students could show their artwork to the community, their peers, teachers and parents,” she said. “It was another way to give students a sense of ownership and for them to take pride in what they do.” Pfeiffer noted that several parents have told her they did not know how tal-

Special Olympics awarded grant to focus on improved health for local athletes As people across the globe recognized World Health Day April 7, Special Olympics North Carolina began expanded health programming for people with intellectual disabilities, a population that lacks access to adequate healthcare and faces significant health disparities. This new programming is made possible through a $25 million commitment to Special Olympics International from the Golisano Foundation. Special Olympics has made athlete health a strategic priority and will work to accelerate health efforts to include a turn-key referral process that provides Healthy Athletes follow-up care with community-based network of providers. This work will move toward the ultimate goal of inclusive health care for people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics NC will be expanding health partnerships and programming with the help of health and wellness partners in a selected area of the state over the next three years. The expanded health programming will include health screenings in areas such as vision and hearing as well as followup care for participating athletes while also engag-
ing athletes in weight loss, fitness and nutrition education programs. People with intellectual disabilities are part of one of the largest and most medically underserved disability groups in the world. Millions with intellectual disabilities lack access to quality health care and experience dramatically higher rates of preventable disease, chronic pain and suffering, and premature death in every country around the world. In developing and developed countries alike, people with intellectual disabilities are consistently one of the most marginalized population subsets – a status that comes with horrific health outcomes. A 2013 United Kingdom study found that people with intellectual disabilities were more than twice as likely to die before the age of 50 than the general population. Barriers that contribute to this include stigma and discrimination, insufficient or lack of health care provider
training, over-attributing symptoms to a particular condition which results in conditions being untreated and undiagnosed, limited prevention education reaching this population, limited self-advocacy, cultural beliefs, increased poverty and poor enforcement of laws and policy to protect this population. For example, one Special Olympics study found that 52 percent of medical school deans and 56 percent of students reported that graduates were “not competent” to treat people with intellectual disabilities. Over the past 19 years Special Olympics International has grown to become the largest global public health organization specifically focused on people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics is making strides for ensuring inclusive health and working with corporations, organizations, universities, hospitals and health care professionals to do more to ensure people with intel-

pring celebrations wouldn’t be the same without one classic centerpiece: leg of lamb. Whether roasted or grilled, a leg of lamb is a tried and true addition to the Easter or Passover table – or any time. As elegant as it is, it’s also quite simple to prepare. For a new take on tradition, swap conventional mint jelly with a vibrant salsa verde or mint-pistachio pesto for a fresh, but familiar, flavor that complements the rich taste of American lamb. Find more springtime celebration-worthy American lamb recipe ideas at americanlamb. com. Boneless Leg of American Lamb Follow these easy guidelines for preparing the perfect roast: • For generous portions, figure on one half pound of American lamb per serving. • Use a good meat thermometer to determine doneness. Medium Rare: 145˚F; Medium: 160˚F. • Remove the roast from the oven when the internal temperature reaches 10 degrees less than your desired temperature; it will reach desired doneness while it rests, allowing the meat’s juices to settle. • Carve the roast across the grain so the meat will be tender.
Roasted Boneless Leg of American Lamb with Fingerling Potatoes, Leeks and Mint Salsa Verde Serves: 6-8 Mint Salsa Verde 3 garlic cloves, smashed and peeled 2 cups loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves 1 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves 3 anchovy fillets 1 tablespoon capers, drained and rinsed 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons plus 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil, divided Lamb 3-3 1/2 pounds boneless leg of American lamb, butterflied 2 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided 3 large leeks 2 pounds fingerling potatoes, halved lengthwise 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Position rack in lower third of oven (so roast will be in the middle) and heat
to 325˚F. With food processor running, add garlic cloves. When finely minced, stop motor, remove top and scrape down bowl. Add parsley, mint, anchovies, capers, salt and pepper. Pulse until ingredients are finely chopped. Pour in 2 tablespoons olive oil and pulse to combine. Transfer about two-thirds of paste to small bowl and cover with remaining olive oil. Cover tightly and refrigerate until serving time, or up to 2 days. Lay lamb flat on cutting board with fat side up. Trim fat to no more than 1/8 inch. Turn meat over and trim away any large chunks of fat from interior, but leave the rest intact. Be careful not to trim away connective tissue that holds meat together. Season lamb on both sides with 2 tea-
spoons salt. Spread salsa verde paste over interior of meat to edges, rubbing into crevices. Reserve remaining salsa verde. Roll lamb up lengthwise into cylinder. Use kitchen twine to tie cylinder at 1 1/2-inch intervals. Tie another piece of twine lengthwise to secure ends. Allow lamb to sit at room temperature 1-2 hours before roasting. (If you plan to wait more than 2 hours before roasting, loosely cover and refrigerate roast, but bring to room temperature before cooking.) Pat outside of roast dry using paper towels before roasting. Trim dark green tops from leeks. Halve leeks lengthwise and rinse well. Pat dry and cut into 2-inch pieces. Put leeks and halved potatoes in large roasting
pan. Drizzle vegetables with olive oil, season with remaining salt and toss to coat. Spread vegetables around roasting pan in even layer. Place lamb roast on top, seam-side down and transfer to oven. Roast until an instant-read thermometer inserted into center of meat reaches 135˚F for medium-rare, about 1-1 1/2 hours. Transfer lamb to cutting board and allow meat to rest for 20-30 minutes, loosely covered with foil. (The internal temperature will increase to 145˚F.) Bring reserved salsa verde to room temperature. Toss vegetables in roasting pan to coat in pan drippings. If they are tender and browned, set aside in a warm spot while meat rests. If not, return to oven to finish cooking. Trim away kitchen twine
and cut roast into 1/2-inchthick slices. Arrange slices over vegetables. Stir salsa verde to incorporate oil, spoon it over meat and serve. Grilled Butterflied American Lamb Leg with Mint-Pistachio Pesto Serves: 6-8 3 pounds boneless leg of American lamb, butterflied salt and pepper (to taste) Mint-Pistachio Pesto 1 cup shelled pistachios 1 cup fresh mint (leaves only) 1/2 cup fresh Italian parsley 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon lemon juice (to taste) 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (to taste) freshly ground black pepper (to taste) pinch red chili pepper flakes
Heat oven to 350˚F. Lay lamb leg open on a cutting board. Trim off visible fat. Season lamb generously with salt and pepper; allow to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes prior to grilling. Toast pistachios by placing in single layer in shallow dish or pan and baking 8 to 10 minutes. In food processor, add pistachios, mint, parsley, oil, vinegar, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt, pepper and chili flakes; blend until somewhat chunky. Heat grill to mediumhigh. Grill lamb leg to medium-rare (remove from heat when thermometer reads between 130˚F and 135˚F), or to desired doneness. Rest meat, lightly covered, for at least 10 minutes before serving. Slice meat across grain into thin slices. Serve lamb with pesto, grilled vegetables and salad.
