PTRWA approves water allocation By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer

On April 12, the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority officially voted to expand the water treatment facility at the Randleman Reservoir. The move was not unexpected. This is good news for Jamestown. Only three of the six partners of the water treatment facility – Jamestown, Archdale and Greensboro – were interested in receiving additional water made available by the expansion from 12 million gallons per day (mgd) to 14.7 million. “Over the last month, I have met with Greg Flory, executive director with the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority (PTRWA), Interim Archdale City Manager Zeb Holden, and had discussions with Rich Glover, Jamestown’s representative on the board to discuss the Kime water plant expansion,” said Jamestown Town Manager Chuck Smith. “Given Jamestown’s average water consumption for 2014-15 was approximately 466,000 gallons per day (gpd) and with the Grandover development and other high demand users interested in connecting to Jamestown’s water system, it makes financial sense for Jamestown to increase water allocation beyond the Jamestown’s discussed water allocation amount of 133,000 gpd.” Exactly how much more water Jamestown would receive depended on two factors – how many partners bought into the expansion and how much Greensboro needed. Greensboro is the

largest consumer of water from the reservoir. “Greensboro has informed the PTRWA they will not need their full allocation of 2.33 mgd,” Smith said. He met with Holden to discuss the remaing share of Greensboro’s allocation of 867,000 gpd. The result was that Archdale would receive 625,000 gpd of Greensboro’s share with Jamestown receiving 242,000 gpd, or 13.89 percent. The additional cost for Jamestown would be $166,667. “Since Jamestown would be contractually bound to pay for a minimum of 25 percent of the new water

allocation amount, Jamestown would be obligated to pay for 93,750 gpd (25 percent of the 375,000 gpd) in addition to the 400,000 gpd for a total of 493,750 gpd,” Smith added. The 493,750 gpd is above the town’s current average of 466,948 gpd. “Jamestown would normally purchase the additional 66,000 gpd above the 400,000 gpd PTRWA allocation from High Point at a rate of $1.88 per 748 gallons, costing $165.88 per day or $4,976.47 over a 30-day period,” Smith said. “In the contract agreement with Jamestown obligated to purchase a minimum of 93,750 gpd, Jamestown See WATER, PAGE A3

The Jamestown Planning Board unanimously approved a rezoning request by Koury Corporation on April 11. Koury had asked to rezone part of 6115 Jamestown Parkway from Bypass (B) to Conditional Use Bypass (CZ-B). The site is approximately 23.95 acres. Also included in the rezoning request was the eastern corner of Guilford College Road at 6029 West Gate City Blvd., next to the credit union. Koury asked that this property of approximately 13.7 acres be rezoned from CZ-B to CZB, due to a change in conditions. The properties are planned for future expansion of the Grandover development and will include retail, restaurants, residential and a retirement community. The new development is within the extraterritorial jurisdictions of both Jamestown and Greensboro. Koury has agreed to voluntary annexation of the Jamestown portion for office, commercial and residential use. Steve Showfety, president of Koury Corporation, addressed the Planning Board, and spoke about the new Grandover development. He cited the architectural and landscape designs of current Grandover commercial developments along Grandover Boule-

Koury Corporation recently received approval from the Jamestown Planning Board for rezoning of areas 1, 2, 3 and 4 within Jamestown’s extra-territorial jurisdiction. Area 1 is slated to be apartments. Other development will be announced at a future date. The Jamestown Town Council will discuss the matter in May. vard as the type of design Jamestown would see in this new section. “We’re sensitive to the landscape requirements, long-term building plan,” Showfety said. “(We) worked with municipalities to develop an equitable water and sewer (plan) that will make water and sewer available to Camelot Estates … and the community college if they so choose and the development they’re doing behind Sheetz.” “Our pledge to you is to do a quality job,” Showfety said. “That’s not part of this zoning hearing. That’s by

statute.” Of interest to many in attendance was Koury’s plan to construct about 190 multi-family apartment homes along East Main Street between Millis Road and Jamestown Parkway. The apartments will back up to the Camelot Estates subdivision across the street from Millis Road School. Many residents of that subdivision, as well as representatives from GTCC, Gardner Hill Station and the Villas at Sedgefield attended the Planning Board meeting. CALENDAR/LOCAL

Distracted driving campaign is underway April is Work Zone Safety Awareness Month to remind motorists to slow down, don’t drive distracted, watch for workers and drive safely through work zones. The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) are launching a new work zone safety awareness campaign, “Do Your Part and Drive Smart. Slow Down. Don’t Drive

Distracted.” April is chosen as Work Zone Safety Awareness Month as it marks the beginning of construction season in North Carolina. It is also held in conjunction with National Work Zone Awareness week, April 11-15. There are approximately 600 active major work zones across the state. Work zones are not limited to interstate highways as road construction and maintenance activities

often affect U.S. routes, N.C. routes and secondary roads as well. “As we enter construction season we need to remind motorists to slow down and pay attention in work zones to prevent injuries and fatalities,” said Governor Pat McCrory. “Getting drivers to slow down and pay attention in work zones is critical in protecting drivers and construction workers alike.” National statistics show

that four out of five work zone fatalities are motorists, and that more than half of work zone crashes are the result of speeding and driver inattention. In North Carolina between 20112015, there were 18,024 crashes that resulted in 88 fatalities in work zones. In 2015 alone, 19 people were killed in work zones, including three workers. In addition to the initial ticket and court costs, a conviction for speeding in

a designated work zone in North Carolina will result in a fine of $250. Workers do not need to be present in a work zone for a speeder to be cited.
NCDOT encourages motorists and highway workers to educate themselves about the dangers associated with work zones and to: Stay alert; Respect the work zone signs, flaggers and warnings; Turn on your headlights;

Don’t tailgate; Stay in one lane; Don’t drive distracted – put down the phone, don’t read, don’t groom or eat; Don’t drink and drive; Obey posted speed limits; Watch for workers; Exercise patience; and Expect the unexpected. To learn more about work zone safety in North Carolina, visit the NCDOT Work Zone Safety Program’s website.

Spring is here and summer is on its way, and vacations are being planned. To help you save money and time on your road trips to many parts of the country, N.C. Quick Pass is cutting the cost of its hard-case transponders in half to just $10 with a spring promo-

tion through June 20. Thanks to partnerships with E-ZPass, Georgia’s Peach Pass and Florida’s Sun Pass, customers with a N.C. Quick Pass hard-case transponder have access to the largest transponder coverage area in the nation, covering 17 states, including North Carolina. “It’s a great way to not only save money and time while traveling, but also means one less hassle for

your trip,” says N.C. Quick Pass Director of Customer Service Susan Pullium. “There is no need to make sure you have enough change or cash as you come up on a toll booth, as the transponder will have you covered and enable you to quickly go on your way.” The hard-case transponder gives drivers a discounted rate when traveling on the Triangle Expressway in the Raleigh

area, and can also be used on toll highways and bridges and in some locations even for transponderonly interstate exits and travel lanes in other states. They include Delaware, Florida (SunPass), Georgia (PeachPass), Illinois (I-Pass), Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New

Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and West Virginia. Once you set up your N.C. Quick Pass account and place the hard-case transponder on the inside of your windshield, you are ready to go. You can get more information on how you can

sign up for a transponder and maintain your account on the N.C. Quick Pass website, by calling the customer service center at 877-769-7277, or by visiting the service center at 200 Sorrell Grove Church Road, Suite A, in Morrisville (off Airport Boulevard, south of I-40 Exit 284).

High Point DAR celebrates anniversary by celebrating Old North State By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer A 100-year anniversary deserves a special celebration and that is exactly what members of the Alexander Martin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in High Point have planned. The group will celebrate the occasion of its 100th anniversary with a series of events and activities. From May 9-15, the High Point DAR, in partnership with over 35 organizations, will host a week of activities that highlight the history, culture, gardens, music and cuisine of North Carolina, one of America’s original 13 colonies. “We started planning a celebration about two years ago,” acknowledged Pat Plaxico, chair of the program committee. “We originally thought of holding a fundraiser tea, then decided on a one-day seminar “Tapestry of History Preservation” highlighting art, music and historic sites.” As the group continued its plans, members realized there were several activities already scheduled near the date of their proposed seminar. When other groups learned about the event being generated by the DAR, they wanted to be part of the celebration. “I was thrilled when people wanted to participate,” Plaxico said. “Our DAR received a grant from the High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau to use for publicity and to create a website about the event.

A tour of the John Haley House beside the High Point Museum is among the many activities planned during the weeklong Old North State celebration sponsored by the Alexander Martin DAR chapter and friends. Other groups are providing in-kind donations. People are coming from all over the state to participate and celebrate the Old North State. “When you get it all down on paper, you see just how much there is to do in High Point. Where activities were not already scheduled, I filled in the holes to add variety.” Yvonne Matlotz, a member of the Martin Alexander DAR, created a calendar of events to make it easy to see what is happening on a daily bases. The anniversary activities include many free events, some free events that require reservations and others for which there is a charge. The DAR members will host their planned fundraiser, “A Tapestry of Historic Preservation: Six Special Speakers & Lunch,” on May 12 at First Presbyterian Church in High Point. Registration

begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program ends at 3:30 p.m. The cost is $50. To attend, contact Sallie Bardelas at 336-882-9330. “With the money we raise, we hope to erect a historic marker commemorating our organization, which will be placed on Farriss Avenue,” Plaxico said. “Our first regent lived in a house on the corner of Farris and Main, which is now Millis Square, a group of shops.” Some other activities include a virtual tour of the Museum of the American Revolution, which is scheduled to open in Philadelphia in the spring of 2017. The program be held May 10 in the Hayworth Fine Arts Center on the campus of High Point University. The cost is $60, which includes the program, a picnic lunch and a donation to the Museum as a Cornerstone Charter Member. Advance reservations are required.

On Friday and Saturday, “Shop Talks” feature over 20 participating retail merchants along a twomile section of North Main Street. A free trolley will run between the Convention and Business Bureau and the train station then back, making stops along the way. Conductors will share the history of High Point’s Main Street. “Bloom,” a garden tour hosted by the Southwest Renewal Foundation and High Point by Design will be held Friday through Sunday, and highlight outdoor living at five houses on Johnson Street. CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Fire in Fayetteville leaves gap in Chapel Hill Why did a fire in Fayetteville cause a panic in Chapel Hill? When I got word about the April 9 fire that destroyed the Haymont Grill in Fayetteville, a little bit of me got destroyed, too. The Grill was a few blocks away from a house at 1805 Bragg Blvd., into which I and seven other lieutenants had stuffed ourselves while we were stationed at Fort Bragg in the early 1960s. The Grill became our favorite eating place, in part because Pete Skenteris, the longtime owner, took care of us. In early 2015, he told Chick Jacobs of the Fayetteville Observer, “Once someone comes once, they keep coming back. They become our

by guest columnist D.G. Martin friends, not just customers. We use only fresh ingredients, fresh ground beef and seafood.” I think he told me the same thing in 1963. Since then, whenever I passed through Fayetteville, I tried to stop for a bite to eat and for a visit with the Grill’s current clientele and with

Skenteris, who had taken care of my roommates back then and thousands of others like us since then. So you can understand why the far away fire took away something from me. But the Chapel Hill panic about the fire was about more than my memories. If you read this column regularly, you may remember that I have written about Haymont Grill several times recently. I used it as an example of the kind of place I wanted to include in my new book titled North Carolina’s Roadside Eateries: A Traveler’s Guide to Local Restaurants, Diners, and Barbecue Joints to be published in October by UNC Press as a part of its Southern Gateways Guides series.

Looking for old-time, locally owned, restaurants that are community gathering places, ones that are close enough to the big highways for travelers to find them and, rather than loading up with franchise fast foods, have a meal with the locals, there could be no better find than Haymont Grill. The fire that gutted the Grill caused an estimated $750,000 in damages. Almost nothing survived except the iconic sign “Hamont Grill” that perched atop the building. Why was it Hamont and not Haymont? That abbreviation came about because a sign with six letters cost $5,000 less than one with seven letters, and in the early days Skenteris needed to save every dol-

When changing jobs, should you leave 401(k) money behind?
 By NATHANIEL SILLIN

With the average American spending only 4.6 years at any given job, it’s never been more important to have a plan for any retirement funds you’ve accrued at any employer. A big problem that began during the 2008 recession but continues today involves loans, hardship withdrawals and complete cash-outs of 401(k) plans. A 2015 Boston College study (http://crr.bc.edu) reported that 1.5 percent of retirement assets “leak out” of 401(k) plans and personal IRAs each year, reducing an individual’s wealth at retirement by about 25 percent. Meanwhile, a 2014 Fidelity Investments study sounded a particularly urgent alarm about 401(k) cashouts and workers under the age of 40. The mutual fund giant noted that 35 percent of all participants were simply cashing out their 401(k) assets when leaving a job. However, for workers aged 20-39 – indeed, those with the longest savings horizons – that number jumped to 41 percent. So what should you do? A great deal depends on your age, time to retirement and specific needs. Start by taking an inventory of your retirement assets. Either alone or with the help of a qualified financial or tax expert, put together an official list of current and former 401(k) plans, personal IRAs or, depending on your years of work history, assets from traditional defined benefit retirement

plans that were popular more than 20 years ago. Then see where you are. Make sure you always review retirement options whenever you change a job. If an employer is highly motivated to get you on board, query the company about the retirement savings options that would fit the position you’re interviewing for. Ask hiring managers in general terms about how well their retirement options have performed and if you would have the option of rolling over your 401(k) assets to that employer. If, for example, your prospective employer has a more generous matching feature than your current employer has, that could create a favorable environment for transferring those assets. If not, you may want to keep your money in your employer’s existing plan or consider a rollover to a personal IRA with the features you’re looking for. Ask plenty of questions. Evaluate IRA choices carefully. If you are considering rolling your former employer’s assets into a personal IRA, evaluate your tax situation, both Traditional and Roth IRA options and their performance and fee levels before you arrange for a transfer. Go for the best-performing investment options that fit your needs and anticipated retirement date. Employer-based 401(k) plans generally disclose investment choices and

investment fees (www.dol.gov/ebsa/ publications/401k_employee.html). It may be a good idea to get qualified help to review those documents. Age is important. There’s typically a 10 percent penalty if you withdraw money from a 401(k) or IRA before age 59½. But if you lose or leave your job at age 55 or later (or earlier for certain public employees), you can generally take 401(k) withdrawals without penalty. An IRA rollover requires the account holder to be at least 59½ years old before they can take a penalty-free IRA distribution. While keeping your money invested as long as possible is key to a successful retirement, withdrawal issues are also important to consider based on your age and time to retirement. Invest on your own. It’s important to do parallel personal retirement planning with any employer-based retirement options available to you. Again, get qualified help to assist you in evaluating the retirement savings and investment decisions you make on your own and at work. Bottom line: Frequent job changing can derail anyone’s retirement planning. Whether you roll over a former employer’s retirement assets every time you switch or decide to keep your money in certain plans, get help if you need it. Dropping out of high school needs a second thought Q. I’m a junior in high school, 17, and have a job and plan to get my license, buy a car, and go to college. I want to drop out of school – my classes are pointless – and get my GED. If I drop out, I’ll have enough time to work two jobs, study for my GED and save up enough for college. I know my dad will not let me do this (he has his GED, too). I have no idea what to do.

Advice from Those Who Care

A. Getting a GED and going on to college is harder than graduating from high school. Everything depends on a high SAT

score. You’ll need to show that you can do college level work and didn’t drop out of high school because you couldn’t handle the work. How about grades? Any disciplinary issues with your school? You will have to submit school transcripts and a letter of recommendation from at least one teacher. You can delay admission to a college for a year, which gives you extra time to work. Some schools allow students to take community college

classes for dual credit – look into this before you make a final decision. Your school counselor and the local community college can tell you if that is an option. This may upset your dad a lot. That is something to consider. He may feel he failed you and will be embarrassed by people who will assume that you dropped out because you are stupid or bad. Best regards, Nanny-Nan

the Grill and a beautiful photo of its “Hamont” sign. “In a few days, it will be too late to make a change without incurring great expense,” my editor told me when he learned about the fire. “You can remove the Haymont description now, but it has to be now, not later. We think it’s best. Otherwise your book will be out of date when it’s published. But we have to decide now.” Finally, I agreed to remove the listing. The book will not be the same without the Grill. Nor will my world be the same without knowing that Pete Skenteris and the Haymont Grill are waiting to welcome me back to Fayetteville.

NORTH CAROLINA HISTORY • April 20, 1971 – The US Supreme Court, in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, upheld the use of busing to achieve racial desegregation in schools. The ruling allowed Charlotte and other cities nationwide to use mandatory busing and student assignment based on race to attempt to further integrate schools. Swann v. Mecklenburg arose in 1965 when a black parent, James E. Swann, challenged the system that kept Charlotte’s black students apart from the white majority. Changes in memory as we age do not always lead to Alzheimer’s By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer We’ve all been there. You walk into a room and can’t remember what you came in for. During the middle of a conversation, you can’t recall the name of a good friend. It is very annoying when this happens, but it also can be very scary. Are these little memory lapses an indicator of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease? According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.4 million Americans are living with the disease, which includes an estimated 200,000 under the age of 65. Someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s every 66 seconds. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the fifth leading cause of death for those 65 and older. Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. However, Dr. Laura Baker has made it her life’s work to change that fact.

(photo/Jane Whitehorne)

Dr. Laura Baker of Wake Forest School of Medicine discusses age-related changes in memory. Baker is a cognitive neuroscientist and associate professor of geriatrics and gerontology at Wake Forest School of Medicine. Her primary focus is to find a cure for Alzheimer’s, or at least, to determine who will get the disease and to find ways to delay its onset. She recently discussed memory loss during a program jointly presented

by the Adult Center for Enrichment, Hospice of the Piedmont and High Point Regional UNC Healthcare. “Why does memory get worse as we get older? asked Baker. “Why is it that some people develop even worse memory and develop a disease? Why is it that some people happen to have very good memory and thinking skills long

into their later years? These are very difficult questions to answer and understand.” At birth, everyone is very similar. However, the influence of culture, environment, nutrition and stress affects how the body ages over time. Every body reacts differently to those influences. In addition, how well the body is maintained physically plays a very important role in the aging process. “We all become more different from one another as we get older,” said Baker. “So when we’re 65 and memory is not what is used to be, is that normal? I don’t know. If we all were the same, we would know very easily when memory goes bad.” However, Baker added, sudden changes in memory that are very different from others should be investigated. These changes could be caused by a head injury or stress or some other medical condition. Yet, they also could be an indication of dementia or Alzheimer’s. Having said that, Baker commented there are some normal, memory-related

changes that occur as we age. Those include: forgetting names; being unable to multitask easily; taking longer to learn new things; and being unable to quickly recall information when you need it. Changes that are not normal include: feeling confused; getting lost or turned around, especially in your own home; repeating conversations; difficulty managing daily tasks, such as turning on the stove; and loss of interest in activities. Unfortunately, there is often a substantial period of time during which these abnormal changes develop. Baker calls it the gray zone. During this time, there are subtle signs family members may notice, but the person continues to carry on daily life. However, the person knows something is wrong. He feels overwhelmed, scared and exhausted trying to maintain his life. Until more treatments are developed, the best way to combat dementia and Alzheimer’s is prevention. The best strategies to save the brain include: increase physical activity; make

healthy dietary choices; improve mood; reduce stress; and proactively manage medical issues. “As time passes, if you have not been touched by dementia yet, you will be,” said Baker. “Dementia is often a topic no one wants to talk about because it’s an old persons’ disease. “Older adults who are dealing with dementia are dealing with loss and it is not a loss they ever wanted. They worked their whole lives to have some free time at the end and then during the free time at the end they have dementia. Anything we can do as a community to give back to them is highly commendable. “(At Wake Forest) we have a thriving research program where we are trying to identify new treatments and new ways to prevent the disease. That is my sole purpose in life, for the rest of my life, to study ways to slow it down or prevent it.”

Free event focuses on child abuse prevention, health and safety In honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, three local organizations are working together to draw attention to the need to end child abuse and to focus on the health and safety of every child in Guilford County. The third annual “Get Out and Play Day” will be held on April 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at High Point City Lake Park. The event is free and geared toward families with children of all ages. Children will enjoy carnival games, slides, a bounce house, entertainment, face painting, demonstrations, prize drawings and more. Parents can secure Kid ID’s for their children, get connected to local resources and participate in the fun. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. At 9 a.m., children from the community will plant a pin-

wheel garden in memory of North Carolina children who died in 2014 at the hands of a parent or caregiver. Blue pinwheels, the symbol for Child Abuse Prevention Month, may be purchased for $2 at the event. All proceeds will go toward future child abuse prevention efforts. Every hour a different speaker will take the stage to share how our community can work together to protect children. “This year the focused Topic will be on Child Sexual Abuse. Guilford County continues to rank #2 out of the 100 counties in N.C. in population of registered sex offenders.” “We are at an epidemic status, and we must all be involved in prevention, this is a call to action,” states Patti Marlowe. Marlowe, prevention specialist at the Greater High Point YMCA, started this event two years ago to raise

awareness about child abuse, and to connect parents, grandparents, caregivers and other community members with information about prevention. “Last year, more than 1,200 families participated in the event, and we’re hoping to top that this year,” said Marlowe. “We’ll have some fun together while also addressing a topic that’s important to our whole community. Our goal is to raise awareness about the prevalence of child abuse and to get prevention information into the hands of all adults who would like to get involved in this effort.” High Point YMCA, Darkness to Light and S.A.F.E. Child of Guilford County are sponsoring the event. Other organizations advocating for the health and safety of children will be there to answer questions and to connect people to resources.

Road trips and writing By CAROL REED Jamestown Public Library “The blank page is like a road trip that has yet to be planned. There is a destination…and there are an infinite number of paths to use to reach that destination. It is the goal of every writer to fill that blank page and make that journey as interesting as possible for the reader so that once that destination is reached, the reader is left wanting to remember…the excitement of the journey.” Paulie Anderson, Valley Voice, CO. When we think of authors, some of us are in awe of what they have accomplished or that they were smart enough to get published. Writer Margaret Maron doesn’t always know who the murderer is when she begins her next mystery. Some authors say the characters speak to them, get into their minds. These characters grow and change because they want to, not because the author has a choice. At a recent literary conference, five authors were featured. Anthony Doerr was the final speaker. He wrote All the Light We Cannot See which has become a very popular book club choice. Our Lunch Bunch just discussed it last week. I had been told it was about a blind French

girl and a young Nazi soldier meeting during World War II. When I read the book and found that they actually only spent about half a day together, I was disappointed and said so. Everybody else pounced on that attitude and began extoling the virtues of the book, which made me appreciate it much more. The longest discussion was about the disposal of the huge diamond. What happened to it? Did they know it was real? Where is it at the end of the book? Another of the authors was Colm Tóibín whose latest book is Brooklyn, a story about an Irish immigrant girl who falls in love with an Italian man. A movie has been made of this book so it must be more exciting than it sounds. Another of his books is The Master. This is a novel about the 19th century writer Henry James. It examines his life of loneliness and failed relationships. Sounds depressing, right? Yet all the authors at this conference spoke of writing being a lonely activity. Karen Joy Fowler was the third author who spoke. Her novel, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, is based on true experiences of some families who tried to raise infant chimpanzees as a family member. The human sister to the chimp was heart-

Other authors at the conference were Curtis Sittenfeld (The American Wife) and Emily St. John Mandel (Station Eleven). Because the conference was in Colorado, not many folks from North Carolina attended, but maybe next year. Our local conference Bookmarks will be held in Winston-Salem in September. Several people spoke during the public comment section, some in opposition, but several who were undecided. Although others indicated approval, no one spoke in favor of the rezoning. In a 2015 agreement, Jamestown agreed to an Annexation and Public Utility Reimbursement Contract with Koury to provide water and sewer lines to the town’s portion of the development. Under the agreement, the town would split the cost of the project, with Koury doing the installation of water and sewer lines, a pump station and a force main. The Town would reimburse Koury for $575,000. It is unknown if that figure is still current.

Also unanimously approved by the Planning Board was a signage plan for the Koury property. On April 19, the Jamestown Town Council was expected to set a public hearing date for its May meeting to hear the Koury requests.

LOCAL Think Big Reading Room opens with celebration By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer “We have to know how to read if we want to succeed,” sang fourth grade students at Union Hill Elementary School as they held open books in front of them and swayed to the music. The words were part of a song penned by Lillie Harris, the school’s music teacher, for the grand opening of the Think Big Reading Room on April 13. Guilford County School officials and community leaders, along with some Union Hill staff and students, gathered in the gym to celebrate the occasion before moving down the hall for the ribbon cutting that formally opened the room. The Think Big Reading Room is the concept of former presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy, to promote leisure reading as a key to unlocking a child’s full potential. The first one was established in 2000 at Hall’s Cross Roads Elementary School in Aberdeen, Md.

Since that time, 138 Think Big Reading Rooms have been created in 17 states and Washington, D.C. The Think Big Reading Room at Union Hill Elementary is the first of its kind in North Carolina. It was based on the Carson concept and made possible through a $15,000 donation from a friend of the High Point Community Foundation. “The reading room is a bit magical,” said Amy Warner, executive director of the Carson Scholars Foundation. “The more you read, the better student you become.” A video message from Dr. Carson shared how his mother’s encouragement to read changed his life. “She made my brother and I read two books each week and write a book report to give her,” said Carson, who admits to being a poor student up to that point. “We did not know she was illiterate and could not read the reports we gave her.” Once Carson began to read more, however, he got so involved he wanted to read all the time. He

You don’t have to be a victim of circumstance.” Carson challenged stu-

dents to do their best, read every day and always think big. Following the program, Nora Carr, co-interim GCS superintendent, noted that Union Hill Elementary was the perfect place to establish a Think Big Reading Room. “The donor wanted a jewel in High Point and Ed Price (a member of the GCS School Board)

thought Union Hill was a great place to start,” she said. “This was an opportunity to get more reading material into the hands of kids who need it.” The reading room differs from the library because all the books and literature there are geared for the students’ reading pleasure. There is nothing directly connected to research, reports or curriculum. “There are over 500 books in the room,” said Susan Steen, co-assistant principal at Union Hill. “They are arranged by theme with books for all reading levels in each section. Students can go to the section that interests them the most.” A schedule has been created so all the classes can

come to the reading room at least once a week. “This is a great opportunity for kids to read what they enjoy – just for fun,” said Union Hill media specialist Keyunda Miller. “The library is more academic,” she added. “But I hope to increase the library’s selection so if a student finds something they like in the reading room they can check out a book in the media center to take home and continue to read about it. The reading room will impact the kids so much because they will be reading more.”

Highway Patrol to conduct ‘Operation Drive to Live 2016’ With the beginning of prom season, North Carolina the Highway Patrol will conduct Operation “Drive to Live” during the week of April 18, 2016. The operation will be conducted from 6 a.m. through 5 p.m. each day. The operation is an initiative by the Highway Patrol to reduce the number of teenage related traffic collisions and deaths. According to National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, young drivers are significantly over represented in fatal crashes, particularly 16 and 17 year olds. One area that is particularly concerning is distracted driving. Our youngest and most

inexperienced drivers are most at risk, with 10 percent of all distracted driving crashes involving drivers under 20. In 2015, the Highway Patrol investigated over 58,812 motor vehicle collisions involving drivers and passengers who were between the ages of 15-19. Of those collisions, 10,501 injuries were reported and 107 resulted in one or more fatalities. Troopers will be enforcing all traffic laws around the state’s schools and conducting traffic safety education programs at the high schools prior to the school year ending.

All that jazz

(Photo/Submitted)

Brandon Walker, Julian Broddy and Ryan Hawks participated in the All County Jazz clinic April 13-14 at Grimsley High School. Throughout the clinic, there were lots of thoughts about jazz exchanged and great discussion among the students. The concert provided some classic charts and excellent solos led by Mr. Mondre Moffett from N.C. A&T State University.

As I See It

by Shirley Adkins, Womack Publishing, Star Tribune I think one of my favorite authors is Corrie ten Boom. If you are not familiar with her, do some research. She was quite a lady. After losing most of her family to the Nazis in World War II and living in one of the worst concentration camps, Corrie was released on a “technical error.” Her life was never the same again. She traveled the world over testifying to the love and faithfulness of God. She called herself the “Tramp for the Lord.” (Also the name of one of her books.) Corrie made many personal sacrifices in her ministry for the Lord, but many people were brought to the cross of Jesus because of her. Matthew 9:27-31 tells of the time Jesus healed two blind men. Verse 29 says, “Then touched He their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.” How much faith do we have? Enough to be healed? How much is enough? “As a grain of mustard seed.” That is pretty small. Corrie ten Boom learned that we use what faith we have at the time for the crisis of the time. The more we show, the more God gives us. Faith is a spiritual muscle… the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Corrie ten Boom suffered much for her faith to be refined. We may also have to suffer, “tried by fire,” in order for our faith to be strong enough to say, “Yes, I’ll trust You, NO MATTER WHAT.” It is easy to have faith on the mountain top, but when we get lost in the deep, dark valleys, remember “there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still” (quote from Corrie). “O keep my soul and deliver me; let me not be ashamed for I put my trust in Thee.” (Psalm 25:20) (NOTE: Corrie wrote many books, including The Hiding Place, which became a movie.)

Adopt-A-Highway volunteers and NCDOT promote Litter Sweep

Hundreds of volunteers from across North Carolina are participating in some spring cleaning – outdoors. The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Adopt-AHighway program kicked off its Spring Litter Sweep on April 16. The event will run through April 30. Volunteers from local businesses, schools, non-profits and community groups work with NCDOT to help keep North Carolina’s roadways clean throughout the year. Adopt-A-Highway groups are encouraged to take part in the biannual litter sweeps, which are held in the spring and fall and help increase cleanup and motivate the community to be good stewards of the environment.

The Adopt-A-Highway Program was established in 1988 to decrease the amount of litter on the state’s roadsides and improve environmental beauty and quality. Roadsides are available for adoption in all 100 North Carolina counties. Adopt-A-Highway groups commit to cleaning their designated roadways at least four times a year. NCDOT provides all groups with safety vests, gloves and bags. “We are proud of our volunteers,” says Don Lee,

state roadside environmental engineer. “We appreciate their work in helping us keep North Carolina clean, green and beautiful.” Visit the Adopt-AHighway website for more information or to apply. Questions regarding the program or applications can be directed to Mike Causey at 919-707-2956 or Kim Wheeless 919-7072974.

The Town of Jamestown held it spring Litter Sweep April 16. Participants included employees from Martin Marietta Jamestown Rock Quarry and Guilford Technical Community College. The group collected about 20 bags of trash. It covered Main Street from the bridge at Wade Street to the railroad underpass, Ragsdale Road to Gannaway Street to Main Street. Also, Oakdale Road to the railroad tracks and Dillon Road to the railroad tracks. Cleanup included a portion of Guilford Road from Main past Wrenn Miller Park, and the entrance sign at Guilford and Guilford College roads.
