Greens renovation to begin next week By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer ShapeMasters, Inc. of Southport has been chosen as the construction company to renovate the greens at Jamestown Park Golf Course. The company came in with a low bid not to succeed $170,000 which was accepted at the April 19 Town Council meeting. Two other companies also submitted bids with estimates of $195,956 and $224,807. Golf course architect Lester George, of George Golf Design Inc., recommended ShapeMasters. “All three of the contractors were qualified and are members in good standing of the Golf Course Builders Association of America,” George wrote in a letter to Chuck Smith, Jamestown town manager. John Crowe, golf course superintendent, said ShapeMasters has worked on courses such as Duke University Golf Course, St. James Plantation and Old Chatham and is currently finishing up a project in Kenya. Work should begin May 6 and be completed midJune on the nearly 42-yearold course. Total estimated time, including grow-in for the new sprigs, would mean the course would reopen Sept. 3, Labor Day weekend. The greens will be constructed to USGA standards. Audience members noticed a sigh of relief coming from council members after the unanimous vote. Mayor Keith Volz had a big smile on his face. “It’s been, what, three years?” Volz said of the project finally getting underway. Actually, serious discussion began in 2009-10 about what needed to be done to upgrade both the aging golf course and clubhouse. The clubhouse is currently undergoing renovation and expansion. In January of this year, George presented an assessment of the greens, which included: too much slope; 40-year-old Bentgrass; contamination issues of Bermuda, Poa Annua grasses and other noxious weeds; and very limited pin positions. His estimate at the time was $417,500. Current overall estimate is $366,000. Rather than contract out the work, the Town will save money by using Jamestown staff to provide some of the labor.

heritage and neighborly atmosphere while actively managing growth associated with being located next to larger neighboring cities. “Jamestown will maintain a small town environment with a vital Main Street, residential neighborhoods, and its historical character as its focus. “Jamestown will continue its commitment to recreation and community wellness by maintaining our walkways, Jamestown Parks and Golf Course and the Wrenn Miller Park. “Jamestown will be attractive to both young and old with a variety of housing choices and price ranges. “Jamestown neighborhoods, schools, businesses, historic districts and parks are key building blocks for Jamestown. We will reserve areas for each type of use while buffering each from the other as possible. “We seek an attractive town that benefits from its historic sense of place and is well landscaped and accessible to pedestrians. We will create a favorable atmosphere for compatible commerce, ones which are clean and provide good job opportunities for our residents.” The new statements will be included in a future revision of the Land Development Plan. A copy of both statements is available on the town’s website, www.jamestown-nc.us. Carol Brooks can be reached at 336841-4933 or jamestownnews@northstate. net.

New chapters begin in the history of area churches By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Oakdale United Methodist and Jamestown United Methodist churches are beginning new chapters in their history. The congregations are forming a partnership, with the resulting church called Jamestown United Methodist. Membership of the Oakdale congregation will be transferred to JUMC and Oakdale UMC will become the Oakdale Campus of Jamestown United Methodist Church. “This is not the death of a church, but the coming together of two congregations to build on each other’s strengths,” said the Rev. Tom Latimer, senior pastor at JUMC. “The faith, talent and commitment are the same in both churches. The partnership will insure and secure a United Methodist ministry at (the Oakdale) campus.” In the fall of 2015, members at Oakdale United Methodist celebrated the church’s 100-year anniversary at it current location, 534 Oakdale Road, Jamestown. However, the group’s recorded history shows that as early as 1876, people in the community began holding prayer

A couple of years later, officials at Oakdale Cotton Mill assisted area residents in building a brush arbor at which they held revival and some Sunday services. A Sunday school was held in a schoolhouse built on Oakdale Road in 1882 south of the current church location. Following a United Methodist church conference in 1902, the first wooden church building was constructed in 1915 and the present brick structure dates to 1942. For years, the church at Oakdale thrived, but as the demographics of the community changed – with people moving, aging and dying – Oakdale UMC was faced with the challenges of a dwindling congregation. In spite of the

changes, members continued to minister within the community. One example is the preparation of meals for area homeless. At Christmas in 2014, they prepared 400 meals and continue to make meals for the homeless once a month. Last December, Dr. Nancy Rankin, superintendent of the Northern Piedmont District of the Western N.C. Conference, approached Pastor Latimer and Pastor David Blankenburg, the student minister at Oakdale, about the possibility of merging the two churches. “We saw that a partnership could be healthy for both congregations,” Latimer said. “The idea is not new. It has come up over the past 10-12 years,

Memories The lay leadership from Oakdale United Methodist will lead the worship service on May 22 at what will become the Oakdale Campus of Jamestown United Methodist. Included in the service will be a time of sharing memories about the church. A covered dish meal will follow in the fellowship hall. Regina Easter, a former member of Oakdale United Methodist has already shared this memory of her experience at the church. “Oakdale was my first church. We lived on McClure Road, off Oakdale Road. My German Shepherd dog, Blackie, would walk with me to church and lie on the front stoop until I came out after Sunday School and Church.

“I enjoyed everything about Oakdale Church – Sunday school, church, the choir, MYF, Bible school, and the preaching, of course. I can remember Mrs. Mert (Myrtle Hodgin) whom I always thought was an “angel.” I can envision her sweet, always smiling cherubic face right now. Who could ever forget the MYF hay rides and wiener roasts. “Oakdale Methodist played a large part in forming the person I am today. Thank you, you sweet old church, for giving this once little girl a strong and loving foundation to grow on.” Others who would like to have their memories included in a special insert to the May 22 Sunday bulletin may send their comments to Elizabeth Greeson at greeson.elizabeth@yahoo.com.

important to maintain the Oakdale name and presence there.” Although there has been a positive reaction to the partnership by both congregations, members at Oakdale cannot help but feel mixed emotions. “My grandparents helped start the church,” Greeson said. “It is the only church I have ever known. There is no way to tell how many lives in the community were affected by that church. There was a presence and spirit there. It had a place in everyone’s heart. It is hard to explain, but it was part of who we were and how we grew up. “But you hear about small rural churches nationwide that are closing and no one wanted our church to close.” Greeson noted that Oakdale is not coming to the partnership with a debt, but rather with

assets, both financial and members willing to be part of ongoing ministries. She has already volunteered to participate in the JUMC Outreach Center (thrift store). “I see a lot of opportunities to join in ministry with the congregation at JUMC and for them to join us,” Greeson said. “It will be amazing what we can do working together.” “I see us coming together as a people and using each other’s talent’s,” agreed longtime Oakdale member Carol McGuire. “As I reflect on our church’s past, it gives me mixed emotions,” Greeson added. “I am not sad or worried about the future, but as I look back, I am sentimental.”

The days are getting longer, y’all. And you know what that means? It’s just about time to get those gardens in, the patio furniture out and to tackle that spring cleaning. but the timing was never right. This time it has taken hold. Both churches voted to join together. Every thing is official with the effective date of July 1.” With the proximity of the churches, many members already have relationships through the community. The youth from Oakdale have often participated in activities and mission trips with those from Jamestown. “There have never been any boundaries between the two churches,” said Elizabeth Greeson, a member of Oakdale. As the partnership moves forward, the leadership of both churches will discuss the transition of finances and the merging of leaders and congregation. “A lot of good things are happening at Oakdale and we want to build on that,” Latimer said. “We want to honor and respect the ministries, tradition and people of Oakdale UMC while fully integrating everyone into servant leadership, pastoral care and decision-making. The gifts and graces among the people of both congregations will translate into ministry among the community. “We see signs of life for the Oakdale community and future growth. It is

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Volunteers are key to SHIIP’s success Did you know that North Carolina has more than 1.77 million Medicare beneficiaries? All those beneficiaries are served by more than 900 volunteers and coordinators from SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program. That equates to more than 1,600 beneficiaries for every SHIIP volunteer. A division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance, SHIIP was established in 1986 to help educate Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers about Medicare, Medicare supplements, long-term care insurance, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D prescription drug plans and other health insurance options for people with Medicare. In addition to the program’s

professionally-operated call center, SHIIP has a volunteer base of 120 county coordinators and 973 volunteers who provide free, unbiased counseling about Medicare in all 100 counties of North Carolina. Without its remarkable and dedicated volunteers, SHIIP could not reach out to all the people using Medicare in our state. Volunteers for SHIIP must successfully complete a computerized training course to become certified to better help people with Medicare. They are required to attend quarterly follow-up trainings and must provide 40 hours of counseling services annually to maintain their certification. Volunteers are also required to submit reports on each client they assist. These records show they

by guest columnist Jeanie Schepisi have helped 108,094 Medicare beneficiaries in one-on-one counseling sessions last year alone and hosted 7,909 public and media events. This is an outstanding accomplishment equal to about 87,000 hours of service. SHIIP staff is very grateful for

the volunteers’ hard work, and we can never thank them enough for all that they do to assist people with Medicare. SHIIP is always looking for new volunteers. Would you like to give back to your community? Do you have computer skills? Are you a people person? Do you have the ability to easily explain things to others? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may be a great addition to the SHIIP family of volunteers. To learn more about becoming a SHIIP volunteer, call our office today at 855-408-1212, or contact the SHIIP coordinating site in your county. Let us educate you about Medicare so you can help the citizens of this great state. If you have questions about

Medicare, contact SHIIP at the N.C. Department of Insurance at 855-408-1212 or visit www. ncshiip.com.

Senior Resources of Guilford is the local SHIIP Coordinating Site for Guilford County. They may be reached at 373-4816 or 884-4816. SHIIP Volunteer Counselors are available to meet with clients, at no cost, at Senior Resources in Greensboro (located in the Dorothy Bardolph Building) and at the Roy B. Culler Senior Center in High Point. We want to take the guesswork and worry from the person who is going on Medicare. For more information about SHIPP, contact Jeanie Schepisi, SHIIP Piedmont Area Regional Manager.

Groping and hoping: Why John Hart is so good and why the latest book took so long to write Can’t we just find something that we can agree upon? Thrown into a silly unnecessary bathroom dispute that has brought unwelcome international attention, good North Carolinians of all ideological, religious and political persuasions would like to have something that brings them together. It happens on May 3 with the release of John Hart’s latest literary thriller, Redemption Road. Residents of Hart’s hometown get the jump on the rest of us this Saturday (April 30) when he returns to Salisbury to talk about his book and distribute copies to old friends. Hart flashed onto the literary scene about 10 years

by guest columnist D.G. Martin ago, writing four bestselling thrillers in four years, The King of Lies, Down River, The Last Child and Iron House. He was the first author to win backto-back Edgar Awards for Best Novel. He sold more than two million copies of his books. Then Hart moved his

family to Virginia and took a long break. That left his giant fan base missing his bestselling, award-winning literary thrillers. Now he is back with Redemption Road, a book that has already drawn widespread praise. Kirkus Reviews says, “Enough characters, confrontations, secrets, and subplots to fill the stage of an opera house – and leave spectators from the orchestra to the balcony moved and misty-eyed.” And plenty enough, I think, to get our minds off the “Bathroom Bill” at least for a few hours. When I talked to Hart recently about Redemption Road, I wanted to know why it had taken so long and how his writing process differs from those of other

writers. The book’s central character, Elizabeth, is a police detective with a complicated background. She holds a firm belief that her mentor in law enforcement, Adam, now being released after serving a long sentence, was wrongfully convicted of a brutal murder of an attractive young mother. Her search for the real killer is the story line that holds Hart’s complex set of plots together. Hart’s stories are based on characters rather than complicated plots charted in advance. “For me,” he said, “the books always begin with an idea of who the main character is. I have to see this person very, very clearly and know two or three emotional driv-

ers that are going to shape that person throughout the book. Before I know the plot, I always see the character first. “I’ve met so many novelists through the course of these years and what I’ve discovered is that there’s a large group that outlines everything. They know exactly what they’re going to do before they write the first word of prose. Then there are those like myself who grope and hope. We make it up as we go and we go to bed every night fearful that we’re going to wake up with nothing the next morning, and if you, God forbid, wake up at three in the morning, you’re never getting back to sleep, but I think that’s the most exciting way to

write because the outliners, once they’ve got that document, they’re basically building widgets. I mean all the excitement goes out of it. For me, the excitement of the job is getting up every day just eager to see where the story goes.” Hart’s method works well unless the central character does not click or deliver the kind of story he wanted. When this happened midway through the first version of his current book, he tossed his manuscript and began anew with a different central character, Elizabeth. The resulting character and story took much longer to write. It took a long, long time, but Redemption Road is worth the wait.

Social media can be friend and enemy By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer Social media is a phrase thrown around a lot these days, often to describe what we post on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, among others. But what is social media and is it our friend or our enemy? A panel of social media professionals recently discussed this topic during a Speakers’ Series program sponsored by the Communication and Foreign Language Department of Guilford Technical Community College. According to Kevin Lee, chairman of the GTCC Computer Technologies department, social media is any form of electronic communication. It allows for the sharing and consuming of information via web-based communication tools. “Do you know that you leave a digital footprint every time you get online?” asked Lee. “You have to be careful what you do online.” People often use social media to stay in touch with friends. Sometimes conversations or pictures shared between friends are not meant for public consumption. Lee cited an example of party pictures a teacher posted while traveling on summer break. The school board saw the pictures and she was asked to resign or be fired. The teacher attempted to fight the charges, but ultimately a court of law upheld the school board’s decision and she was

Today, according to Lee, 90 percent of recruiters and hiring managers report they have looked at the social media profile of an employee candidate. He added that 69 percent have rejected a candidate based on information found on social media. Lee suggested being very mindful of privacy settings within the sites used. Also, set up multiple profiles for different purposes, such as a personal presence for friends and a professional persona for business. “Think about what you post

before it’s out there, because once it’s out there, it will persist forever,” said Lee. “Think about what you want your brand to be and that is what you want to convey to the audience.” Renard Spratling, associate professor of Computer Technologies, said your “brand” is the message your online activity conveys. “What is your online activity saying about you,” said Spratling. “Not only is it your brand, but ultimately you are communicating a message to everyone that comes across what you have

online. “What is your message? Some people’s message is laughter. Some people’s message is motivation. You can control what message you are sending out based on your online activity.” Spratling said by being intentional about your online activity, you could generate revenue streams by sharing your message. The first step to earning money from online activity is to set up a website. From there you could sell products or services, hosts advertisements or endorse products. Some people blog,

which is a chronological log of thoughts published on your website. Fourteen percent of bloggers earn money from their posts. Social media has become a major tool in the corporate world. Claire McCaskill, a senior account executive with Targetbase, a strategic communications company, said ads are targeted to you because of your online activity. “Every time you sign up for something, whether on a website or a social media site, there is a terms and conditions button that everybody just blows right past,” said McCaskill. “That has all the permissions you’ve just given this company to talk to you. “Within those permission statements, you have given this company permission to take a list with your name on it and share it with Facebook. Now Facebook can place ads in your newsfeed that are specifically targeted to you based on previous online activity.” McCaskill said now social media is evolving beyond pushing ads and working to build consumer relationships. Companies give something to consumers to draw them in and keep them coming back to their sites. The panel concluded social media has good and bad aspects. Being thoughtful about your online activity is key to wise social media use. Jane E. Whitehorne can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownlegals@northstate.net.

Hawaiian Lei Day

By CAROL REED Jamestown Public Library

I guess somebody will name a day to honor just about anything. Sunday is Hawaiian Lei Day. Now leis are those flower necklaces the hula girls wear, the ones they give tourists as they land in Hawaii. They are very pretty, but a whole day to honor them? Maybe we should just honor all the flowers on the islands, or all the jewelry or all the hula girls. Or maybe I should search our computer catalog for leis. I came up with the computer thinking I meant “leys” which is not the same thing. Then I tried “Hawaii.” We have some interesting items on that topic from Kathy Reichs (television Bones series) to Michael Crichton’s Micro and even some Magic Treehouse books for kids by Mary Pope Osborne. The most exciting book is Unthinkable: the True Story of the First Double Amputee to Complete the World-Famous Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon. When Scott Rigsby was a teenager, he was riding in the open back of a pickup truck that was towing a three-ton trailer. When it was clipped by a semi, Scott was thrown out and dragged 324 feet before being pinned under the trailer. He lost one leg then, and the other one

soon after that. After 26 surgeries in 12 years, he did the impossible. He crossed the finish line on October 13, 2007, the finish line of the Ford Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. This man is amazing, and he accomplished this feat in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Soul Surfer is the true story of a young girl who lost her arm in a shark attack off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii. Bethany recovers and returns to become a world surfing champion. Both the book written by Bethany Hamilton and the movie are so inspiring, but the DVD shows the great beauty of the islands. The Descendants is another Hawaiian book made into a movie. Kaui Hart Hemmings wrote this novel about a man estranged from his family. He gets more involved when his wife is in a coma. His problems multiply with one addicted daughter and another needing attention. Then there is the dilemma of what to do with the property given to his family by the royal family generations ago. George Clooney stars in the DVD and, again, there is the scenery. If you are looking for information, think Pearl Harbor. Many, many books have been written about

the Japanese attack on our Navy on Dec. 7, 1941. Totally unprepared, even though we may have had hints that it was coming, we lost ships, planes and over 2,400 people during that attack. For a documentary version, try The Decades Collection: 1940s. For a more fictionalized DVD, Pearl Harbor, starring Ben Affleck, is very suspenseful. Pictured above are Cathy Lanham, Bonnie Schurr and Bernie Walsh. Shirley Haworth, right, president of the Historic Jamestown Society, was the guest speaker.

Garden club members enjoy art display at April meeting The Cedarwood Garden Club met on April 18, a beautiful spring day, at the home of Cathy and Joe Lanham. Hostess Cathy Lanham was assisted by Bernie Walsh and Bonnie Schurr. Members were treated to a tour of the exquisite paintings done by Cathy and her husband, Joe, that adorn many rooms of their home. Cathy’s life was the “Spotlight Moment” this month. She and Joe have traveled much of the world even being in places when earthquakes and tsunamis occurred.

Shirley Haworth from the Jamestown Historical Society gave a program about the history of this area and the many hours of research that occur to keep adding to this history. She told of the many stories they have found in the Mendenhall history and are still learning more. It was amazing to learn of all the many other things the Historical Society does. A visit to the Mendenhall Homeplace is worth the trip. The next meeting will be on May 12 at the Chop House Grille.

Make sure your child is ready for kindergarten Spring has started, flowers are blooming and your rising kindergartener is very excited about starting school. One very important part of preparing your kindergartener is making sure they have their immunizations (vaccinations). Kindergartners are now required to have two doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine if they do not have a history of disease documented by a health care provider and the fourth dose of polio vaccine must be given after 4 years of age and before entering school for the first time. The Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Division has immunization appointments available for rising kindergartners during the month of April at both locations (Greensboro and High Point). Immunization

appointments are also available at other times. call 336-641-3245 for an appointment. If your child is covered by private insurance or Medicaid, bring your child’s card with you to the appointment. Due to the success of vaccines, some of these diseases are rarely seen in the United States; however they do still exist and can cause serious illness, disabilities and even death. Make sure to protect your child with the proper vaccinations. As research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown, vaccines are very safe and effective in preventing childhood diseases that can be contagious and life-threatening. The most common side effects are pain and swelling at the site where the vaccine (shot) was given. Some children may

experience a headache and fever. Serious reactions to vaccines are very rare. Parents will have to provide proof of vaccinations on the first day of school. Remember to bring your child’s immunization (shot) record for school entry. A physical exam is now required for any student new to the North Carolina public schools regardless of the grade level. Your child’s health care provider must complete the required Health Assessment Transmittal form. It is available at your child’s school or online at https://www2.ncdhhs.gov/ dph/wch/families/ For more information about vaccinations or for an appointment, call the Guilford County Department of Health and Human services, Public Health Division at 336641-3245.

Rising sixth graders get a glimpse of what middle school is like

By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Several Jamestown Middle School cheerleaders welcomed guests with hearty cheers as they entered the doors of the school at its first annual Rising Sixth Grader Night on April 21. Students from all grade levels participated in the event – from conducting tours of the school and the evening’s activities to representing clubs, music organizations and other opportunities available to sixth graders. Lowes Foods provided snacks for the event. Over 200 guests from all of JMS’s feeder schools took advantage of the occasion to become acquainted with the school’s layout, programs and staff. “We have always had a more formal program, but wanted to try something new and different this year,” said Laura Gonzalez, a sixth grade social stud-

ies teacher and department chair. “We wanted it to be interactive with games, music, videos and just a festive atmosphere for our parents and incoming students. It was a drop-inand-out type format.” Rising sixth graders also visit JMS each year with their feeder schools, but the special night was designed especially to make the 2016-2017 sixth graders and their families feel welcome. “I hope the smiles we saw were indicative of the students’ excitement to be here,” Gonzalez said. “We are excited to have them.” Gonzalez and other sixth grade staff members hope to make next year’s Rising Sixth Grade Night even bigger and better than this year’s. “We would like to see it become more of a community event,” Gonzalez said.

GTCC competed against more than 60 delegations and received the two highest awards: the Overall Outstanding Delegation Award and the Overall Outstanding Position Papers Award. Three GTCC students received the Outstanding Delegate Award, the highest individual award at the conference. Lindsay Pendleton of High Point received the award for his committee work in the China Security Council. Kevin SolteroSilva of Greensboro received recognition for his work in the Economic and Social Council for Asia and the Pacific committee, and Lance Parker of Greensboro and Kathryn Nieri of Summerfield both received

the Co-Outstanding Delegate for their work in the United Nations Development Program. The papers are scored by the conference chairs and evaluated for writing style, format, tone, research and purpose. GTCC represented the delegation of the People’s Republic of China in a variety of committees and competed against more than 30 other colleges and universities including Clemson University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Wake Forest University. “This was an overall team effort in terms of research, preparation and performance at the conference,”

As I See It

by Shirley Adkins, Womack Publishing, Star Tribune As the story goes, He was born in a stable, grew up in a small town, learned the carpentry business and, at the age of about 30, became a traveling preacher. This preacher became well-known for his teachings, healings and miracles. A lot of people followed him around, including some who saw him as a “rebel-rouser.” Controversial? You could say that. He once broke up a lucrative business just outside the church doors. He stood up to the leaders of the day. So, what happened to this fellow? Well, he was hauled off to court… in the middle of the night… illegally tried… convicted of crimes he had not committed. He was punched in the face, spit on, beaten and tortured and then crucified on a cross. Why did all this happen to a “good man?” Because He was more than just a “good man.” He was and is the Son of God. He went through all this for you and for me, so we could face Eternity with Him. He loves us and died… not just FOR us, but in our place, willingly. He was not “made” to do it. It was His choice. Now, we have a choice. We can believe this story that is told in God’s Word and choose to live for Christ or we can choose not to believe it. God gave us free will. He will not attempt to force us to love Him. Forced love isn’t love at all. What will your choice be? “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15b) Your choice today determines what will happen to you when your life on this earth ends. After you take your last breath, it is TOO LATE! No going back. Choose Jesus. You won’t regret it. “Let us search and try our ways and turn again to the Lord.” (Lamentations 3:40)

said Matthew DeSantis, Model UN Club advisor and associate professor of political science at GTCC. “Certainly, Lindsay, Kate, Kevin and Lance deserve individual recognition for the amazing efforts they put forth in their committees, but we would not have been able to win the overall outstanding delegation award without great effort from each member of the team. “The exciting part for me is that nearly everyone is coming back next year, and I really look forward to seeing what this group can accomplish.” DeSantis started the Model UN Club in 2012. He remains on the SRMUN board of directors, serving a two-year term. The GTCC Model UN Club is comprised of GTCC students Shantique Bantum, Haya Baker, Josh Castro, Kathryn Nieri, Ruth-Helen Obas, Lance Parker, Lindsay Pendleton, Kevin Soltero-Silva and Danielle Wiggins.

Rain fails to dampen spirit of Color Walk and Roll participants

LOCAL

In spite of the rainy weather, Haynes-Inman Education Center celebrated its 4th annual Color Walk and Roll April 22. “The Color Walk and Roll is a celebration that represents the wonderful character traits we show each other in our daily lives,” said Jane Kepley, K-12 art specialist at Haynes-Inman and Color Walk and Roll coordinator. “We represent these traits in the different colors we paint on our shirts at each station.” The colors used at Friday’s event and the character traits they represent include: red for compassion and respect, purple for dignity, yellow for hope and happiness, blue for patience, orange for perseverance and green for strength. Haynes-Inman was named among the North Carolina Schools of Character for 2016. New to this year’s celebration was a concert by the BMT Band, a group of staff from CJ Greene and Herbin-Metz education centers who have been playing together for the past five years. A large number of volunteers also helped make the occasion special for the Haynes-Inman students. In addition to regular weekly volunteers, others who helped were from the Pilot Club of Greensboro, Jamestown Middle School Builders Club and Art Club, Ragsdale High School wrestling team, Southern Guilford High School interns, A&T University and “Say Yes.” “We appreciate all who came to help,” Kepley said.

Create a cash stash for the unexpected (StatePoint) April is Financial Literacy Month, a time dedicated to teaching Americans how to establish and maintain good financial habits. The month provides a good opportunity to assess whether you have a solid plan in place to support your financial goals – and that means planning for emergency expenses, too. The best time to plan for unexpected

expenses is well before they happen. One strategy to consider is to open an emergency savings account where you can stash cash specifically for unexpected expenses or short-term savings goals. That way, you can avoid having to pay for these expenses with a credit card and incur interest. Regardless of your financial circumstances, a rainy day fund offers peace of

mind and, if you plan well, it won’t derail your other long-term savings goals. To get one started, consider the following tips from Ally Financial Inc., which offers personal finance tips, tools and education through its Wallet Wise financial literacy program: • Create an account specifically for emergencies: Many make the mistake of assuming that a standard savings account can also serve as a rainy day fund. However, dipping into savings when your roof leaks, may not be the best solution. Start an account that’s only purpose is for emergencies. Some banks, such as Ally Bank, will allow you to create “nicknames” for the accounts to reinforce their purpose. • Specify amount to be allocated: Set a goal for your fund that could cover most emergencies with a little extra to spare. (Some plumbing repairs can easily run close to $1,000.) Determine how much you would realistically need if an emergency were to arise. Set up a recurring transfer or direct deposit to automate savings. If money is tight, decide where you’ll cut corners to make your plan work. For example, directing $30 a paycheck to a rainy day fund in lieu of going out for dinner one night will help plan for the future. • Fee free is the way to be: Maximize your savings potential by finding a bank that won’t charge you a monthly maintenance fee, or penalize you for dipping into your emergency fund. Better yet, an account that earns a competitive interest rate or one that is compounded daily will allow your emergency fund to grow faster on its own. • Ensure you can access funds:

Save now for later needs.

Many Money Market Accounts come with checks or a debit card to ensure quick access to funds, because emergencies usually don’t happen at convenient times. The benefits of such accounts allow you to pay a locksmith, plumber or roofer directly without needing to run to the bank. Why add an additional step to a stressful situation? For additional tips on what you need to know to be smart with your money, visit allywalletwise.com. Everyone is going to face a situation where an emergency strains his or her budget. You don’t leave home in the rain without an umbrella, so don’t take on life without the same safety net. A rainy day fund is a smart way to guard against financial stress.

CHICKEN BURRITO SALAD

M

oms pride themselves on serving their families wholesome, homemade meals. But here’s the reality: 60 percent of moms think that coming up with dinner ideas is more difficult than getting their children to go to bed on time. Moreover, 61 percent of moms frequently order takeout or go out to eat because they don’t have the ingredients on-hand to make dinner. It’s time for a new strategy. When it comes to mealtime, a well-stocked pantry can be the difference between culinary success and a dinner failure. With a pantry full of canned foods, a delicious and nutritious homemade meal is just minutes away. It’s no secret that canned foods are convenient, but did you know that cans are also one of the best ways to get food from the farm to your family’s table? Canned fruits and vegetables are picked and packed when they’re at their peak of ripeness and nutrition, sealing in their freshness and flavor. Just like home canning, the canning process locks in foods’ natural goodness so it’s at arm’s reach whenever you’re ready to get cooking. A pantry stocked with canned ingredients is also a source of recipe inspiration. Staples such as canned chicken, corn, green chilies, olives, beans and tomatoes atop lettuce combine to create a wholesome Chicken Burrito Salad the whole family will enjoy. And in less than 30 minutes, a box of fettuccine and a can of spinach transform into a hearty Pasta with Spinach Pesto.
