Group tours local historic sites By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer Approximately 78 participants in the Vernacular Architecture Forum, which met in Durham June 1-4, visited historic sites in the Piedmont as part of the conference. In Jamestown, they toured several locations, all within walking distance of each other. Preservation Greensboro Director Benjamin Briggs led the local tour and Mendenhall Homeplace Director Shawn Rogers and volunteers also spoke to the group. The theme for the forum was “From Farm to Factory, Piedmont Stories in Black and White.” In addition to conference forums, the group toured plantation housing for blacks and whites; diversified farms of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; turnof-the-20th-century textile and tobacco factories and their associated villages; Quaker communities and churches built by Germans, Scotch-Irish and African Americans; rural schools and urban universities; rural courthouse and crossroads communities; and urban neighborhoods throughout the state. The Vernacular Architecture Forum featured tours to 11 towns in North Carolina, including Jamestown. While here, the

group studied five buildings, Old Meeting House in City Lake Park, Mendenhall store, Mendenhall house, Mendenhall barn and Madison Lindsay house. No other stop included as many historic buildings in such close proximity. Participants also presented scholar papers on various topics relating to architecture and sociology and anthropology. The forum attracted participants from across North America. Participants include scholars from many fields, including history, architectural history, geography, anthropology, sociology, landscape history, historic preservation and material culture studies. Organizers, including architectural historians and students, visited the area in the summer of 2015 for fieldwork to prepare the program. They mea-

sured, studied, discussed and questioned many of the architectural decisions made by early builders as well as the history of the region. This information was compiled into a booklet available at the forum. The cover for the booklet featured a door from the bottom level of the bank barn at the Mendenhall

Homeplace. “It’s like a detective story,” Briggs said last year. “Folks are trying to understand the complexity of the history of all these buildings. We need to spend a week here. Every time we find a mystery, it ends up with five more questions. “There’s a recognition that Jamestown has this wonderful vernacular architecture. All these archi-

tectural historians (today) are enjoying examining and trying to figure out construction techniques and materials and thought processes of how these buildings were built and how they evolved through time.” “The fact that nationally-renowned experts from Colonial Williamsburg and Old Salem have come to Mendenhall Homeplace to

examine and document the built history of Jamestown speaks to the significance of the structures that we hold in trust for the enjoyment and enlightenment of our neighbors and guests,” Rogers said last summer.

Newlyweds enjoy present, don’t worry about future By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Like many married couples, James and Louise started their relationship as friends. As their friendship deepened they decided to get married. Instead of asking Louise’s father for her hand in marriage, however, James asked her son, Tim. “I asked him what he thought of the idea and he said it was alright with him,” James said. “If he had said no, I guess I would have just had to forget her,” he added with a chuckle. Not only did Tim agree to the wedding, he and his wife, Bobbi, helped get the marriage license and arrange a small reception for the couple. Bobbi found a dress that belonged to Louise that she had never worn and James’s stepson brought over a suit for him to wear. The help was neces-

sary because at age 87, James no longer drives and at 82, Louise’s attention to detail is not what it once was. The couple are residents of Shannon Gray Rehabilitation and Recovery Center in Jamestown, where they met and fell in love. After talking to Tim, James asked Rev. Williams, pastor of Emmanuel House of Prayer who conducts Sunday services at Shannon Gray, to perform the ceremony and was disappointed to learn they had to wait to get a license. But on May 29, James Benson and Louise Watkins were married in a meeting room at Shannon Gray, in a small ceremony attended by approximately 75-80 family members and friends. “The pastor’s daughter sang a song,” James said. “I don’t remember what it was, but it had the word love in it. “When the ceremony was over, I didn’t wait for the pastor to say, ‘You may kiss the bride.’ I just kissed her anyway,” James noted with a smile. James is known around Shannon Gray for his happy attitude and smiling countenance. “When I first checked out Shannon Gray to see what it would be like for Mom, James was the first face I saw,” said Tim

MR. and MRS. JAMES BENSON Watkins. “He was smiling and I thought if everyone was like that, Mom would be happy there.” James used to work as a crossing guard at Pilot Elementary School and Tim, a long-time bus driver, later recalled waving to him each day as he passed by. At the time he never imagined the turn of events that would bring James into his family’s lives. “When James and Louise met, it did not take long for them to fall for each other,” said Kayleigh

Dorsett, activities director at Shannon Gray. “They met during the activity sessions and soon began to come there together. Louise would wait in the hall for him to escort her. Before long, we noticed handholding and a kiss now and then. “The first time I met her I knew I liked her,” James said. Louise’s son and daughter-in-law took the couple on “I thought he was nice,” an overnight honeymoon trip to the mountains. Louise said of James. “I fell in love with him and Following the ceremony, See NEWLYWEDS, thought getting married Tim and Bobbi took the page A5 was the thing to do.”

Greensboro detectives are warning the public about the possibility that a local magician may be involved in child pornography. Police stress that this warning is issued as a precaution in the interest of protecting children, and that the man under investigation has not been charged with these offenses yet. On June 2, detectives served a search warrant at 1036 Hill St. after receiving a credible anonymous tip that Randolph Milton Williams, 64, was allegedly downloading pornographic images of children from the Internet. A search of Williams’ residence resulted in detectives seizing his computer and a vast collection of videos and disks suspected to contain explicit sexual images of underage children. Detectives are in the early stages of examining the material to determine the extent of Williams’ involvement in the pornography. At this point, detectives cannot determine whether or not Williams was manufacturing pornography, or viewing existing images. While searching the home, detectives also found items indicating that Williams may freelance as a children’s entertainer by performing magic tricks and telling jokes. He may use the name of “Mr. Funny.”

Art and science blend to give students real-life research experience By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer If anyone thinks the arts and sciences do not mix, a local group of high school students is proving them wrong. On May 25, they participated in NetSci Showcase 2016, a precollege educational traineeship program focused on network science, neuroimaging and the effect of music on the brain. Most of the students are talented musicians. All have worked throughout the school year researching the subject during weekly meetings at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) in Greensboro. “The program brings kids to authentic science – it is real,” said Michelle Lovett, an advanced placement and honors academy biology teacher at Southwest Guilford High School. Lovett began the after-school program at Southwest after Mikayla Siomski, a former student in her Freshman Focus class, wanted to study the effects of music on the brain for her senior project. “We had completed a small study during a workshop in the freshman class,” Lovett said. “When Mikayla was a senior in 2013-2014, she asked me to mentor her senior project on the subject.” Lovett connected Siomski to Dr. Robin W. Wilkins at JSNN. Siomski

studied how different types of music alter brain networks. She had her brain scanned at rest and listening to different types of music and learned data processing. “Mikayla learned so much, I wondered who else would like to do the same kind of research and the following year opened it up to other students,” Lovett said. “The first year we had five students and last year we had eight. When Chelsea Joyce, a former student teacher with Lovett, learned her sister Shelby, a student at Ragsdale, was interested in music therapy, she mentioned it to the leaders of the NetSci cohort and Shelby was invited to join the program. “I have a strong passion for music, but also an interest in the medical field,” Shelby Joyce said. “It has previously been accepted that these two fields do not cross. However, the NetSci Education program is a prime example of how beneficial interdisciplinary studies can be and of the groundbreaking discoveries they elicit. “The program has provided me with a way to enjoy both of my passions simultaneously and to discover and appreciate the complex web of relations they weave.” In recent years, STEM programs have been designed to integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the classroom. Kraft, MRI physicist and director, data processing Gateway MRI Center, assistant professor Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering; Michelle Lovett, advanced placement and honors biology teacher, Southwest High School; Lauren Overton, sophomore at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Avery Sanov, sophomore SWHS; Grace Vu, senior SWHS; Sebastián Sánchez, freshmen SWHS; Bethany Sanov, sophomore SWHS; Dillon Rubalcava, senior SWHS; Shelby Joyce, junior RHS; Kayla Quick, senior SWHS; Mikayla Siomski; Lemar Martin, senior SWHS; and Chelsea Joyce, science teacher, Northwest High School. emphasis is being placed on STEAM, which adds art to the STEM curriculum. “It adds a dynamic of creativity because of students’ artistic minds,” Lovett said. Lovett serves as advisor to the NetSci Education program, an academic club for high school students planning to attend college. Most of the participants are band or orchestra stu-

Interested in attending The NetSci Summer Workshop 2016 will be held July 25-29 from 2-5 p.m. at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering and Gateway MRI Imaging Lab in Greensboro. It is designed for pre-college high school students who have an interest in both music and the science of networks in the brain. Participants will gain lab experience in MRI scanning and processing and learn how researchers take big data and process it into functional pictures to better understand how music impacts brain networks. To learn more, email robinwwilkins.gmail.com or lovettm@gcsnc.com.

dents or interested in neuroscience. “They are learning skills they can use going forward – research, writing in abstract, designing posters, giving talks and professional social skills,” Lovett said. Wilkins and Lovett are working to get grants that could expand the opportunity for additional students to continue research on how music affects the brain. They also are conducting a NetSci Summer Workshop from July 25-29 at the JSNN and Gateway MRI Imaging Lab. The workshop is open to any pre-college high school student interested in both music and the science of networks in the brain. Lovett believes authentic science experiences that

students have now will play a part in creating the next generation of scientists. Sebastián Sánchez, a rising sophomore at Southwest Guilford and a violist, saw a poster last fall about the program geared especially for musically trained students interested in science, and he was immediately interested. “Participating in the program this year has helped me think about career choices in this field and opened my eyes to what I might want to do in the future,” Sánchez said. “I have learned more about brain anatomy and conducting brain research in the real world.” Sánchez plans to attend the NetSci Summer Workshop and participate

in the program again next year. Joyce also plans to continue participating in the program for as long as possible. “The NetSci Education program has given me a brighter outlook on my future and career, as it has shown me that I can pursue my interest in the medical field without forgoing my passion for music,” Joyce said. “Also, members of my cohort, while once strangers from a rival school, are now my friends. Those friendships are not something I plan on giving up.”

CBCC begins Students Saving Summer scholarship program The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) is giving high school and college students a chance to earn a scholarship and save local lives through its Eighth Annual “Students Saving Summer” scholarship program. Students who organize and host a successful blood drive with CBCC between June 1 and Sept. 30, 2016, have the chance to earn scholarship money for their secondary education. Those with the top

five producing blood drives will each receive a $1,000 scholarship from CBCC. Since 2009, CBCC has awarded almost 400 scholarships and grants. “Students, who make up more than 20 percent of our donor base, play a vital role in helping save local lives,” said Martin Grable, president and CEO of Community Blood Center of the Carolinas. “Since our blood supply tends to drop in the summer with families on vacation and school blood drives on hiatus,

‘Students Saving Summer’ is as critical to our summer blood supply, as education is to these students’ futures. Our scholarship program is a way we can give back to our students for the amazing effort they make in helping patients in our area hospitals.” To be eligible for the scholarship, participating students must hold their blood drive between June 1 and Sept. 30, 2016; choose a location; recruit donors; recruit friends, family members and neighbors to

donate; and collect a minimum of 25 units of blood. Each student will be paired up with a CBCC representative who will provide assistance with planning the blood drive. The CBCC scholarship donation must be directly transferred to the college, university or other learning establishment of each recipient’s choice. For more information or to participate in the “Students Saving Summer” Scholarship Program, contact Robin

Sparrow at 336-663-6082 or at RSparrow@cbcc.us. Students are encouraged to contact CBCC as soon as possible to schedule their blood drive. About Community Blood Center of the Carolinas The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) is a non-profit community-based blood center and the primary blood supplier to 27 regional hospitals, serving 20 North Carolina and three South Carolina counties. CBCC focuses exclusive-

ly on gathering red blood cells, platelets and plasma from volunteer donors to save local lives here in the Carolinas. CBCC is a member of America’s Blood Centers, North America’s largest network of community-based, independent blood centers providing more than 50 percent of the nation’s blood supply. For more information on hosting a blood drive or donating blood in your area, visit www.cbcc.us or call 336-938-0269.

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Town negligent in golf course management Editor, Congratulations to our city manager, Mr. Chuck Smith, for convincing our Town Council that our Class “A” PGA pro, Michael Hutcheon is no longer needed at Jamestown Park. Ever since Mr. Smith convinced the Council three years ago to cut Michael’s income by $14,000/year, they have had a rather rocky relationship. Michael knew how to manage the golf course operation and all that went with it. Since Mr. Smith has taken over the “management” of the golf course, Jay Gardner, greens superintendent and one of the hardest working people I have ever known, retired. He was replaced by John Crowe, who is doing a super job. The snack bar, run by Christine and Charlie, was the best around. They were

gone long before the old clubhouse closed. Last year, the “new” management decided to have part-timers work more hours to play golf. Consequently, several of them quit. I am not finding fault with the remaining personal trying to run the course, but the lack of enforcement of rules for running the course. There is no one available. Before the course was closed for long-needed renovations, it was a ship without a rudder. There was no phone line for a few days when they moved to the temporary pro shop. There was no way to use a credit card. Hard to run a business without a phone. The city now has a chance to have one the best municipal courses in the area and one of the finest clubhouses. It will be up to the Town Council to staff both with profession-

June 8, 2009 – North Carolina State University terminated former first lady Mary Easley’s $170,000-a-year job after emails showed that former Gov. Mike Easley had served as an intermediary when the school hired her. June 9, 2009 – In Garner, an unexplained explosion at a ConAgra Slim Jim factory left at least two people dead. June 10, 1718 – Blackbeard’s ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, ran aground about this time and soon sank off the coast of Beaufort. In 1997 underwater archeologist raised a canon believed to be from this ship. June 12, 2011 – North Carolina’s Democrat Gov. Beverly Perdue became the state’s first governor to veto a budget bill since the chief executive was given the power in 1997. Letters to the Editor als, otherwise, we will have an $800,000 hot dog stand and a golf course where anything goes. One bright spot. We are probably the only golf course in the country that is in compliance with HB2 and the federal mandate for transgender bathrooms. This was accomplished by another management decision to put cold drink machines in both women’s rest rooms on the course. Respectfully submitted, Don Douglass Jamestown Thanks from Library Dear Editor, Many, many cheers go out to all those hardworking people who made the Jamestown Public Library

Annual Fish Fry a huge success. Many thanks from the Friends of the Library Committee to all those who volunteered for the many hours of work it takes to create an event such as this. The committee is chaired by Dale and Sue Metz, with the invaluable assistance of Jamie Cyrus, our librarian, and our special friend, Alan Johnson, who has helped with set up and clean up for many a year. The fish was ably cooked by Larry Dunn, Alan Ebel and Leon Plummer who are so good at it that they are in danger of being asked to do it again next year. Norris Haynes provided the propane for the fryers. Hush puppies were made by John and Lily Carden, hard at

work for three hours over hot kettles. Carol Dunn and Sue Metz made several buckets of coleslaw. All 250 baked potatoes were scrubbed, wrapped and cooked by Julia Ebel, Al and Linda Munns, Gary Haynes and Leon and Peggy Plummer. Many of these people did double (and triple) duty when the door opened and the crowd flowed in. The food was served by Don and Cheryl McDaniel, Mike and Ann Hardeman, Jerry and Ronda Odenwelder – all members of Jamestown School Alumni. Bobbie Huggins and Natalie Reiffer served up the iced tea, with the lemons provided by Nancy Wilson. Judy CaldwellMedero served as a runner. Linda Munns and Peggy Plummer supervised the baked goods table, with donations from so many cooks that we have lost

track. Sue Rothermal worked at the ticket table all evening. She also provided us with members of Boy Scout Troop 8, Darius, Darren and Alex who breaded all the fish. And then there were businesses in the community who took an interest and made kind contributions of money or goods. They would include Doug Witcher, Budget Printing, Old Mill of Guilford and Tex and Shirley’s. We also have to mention the Jamestown Methodist Church who generously allowed us to use their kitchen, and Emily McCracken who helped us order the food. Last but not least, a big thank you to all the fine folks from the community who came to eat, chat and enjoy being in Jamestown, N.C. Thank you all! From Friends of the Jamestown Public Library

Remembering Ali and Patt Derian The death of Muhammad Ali last week took away Donald Trump’s monopoly of television news coverage, at least for a time. There was some irony, of course, as the “I am the greatest” clips from Ali replaced similar campaign assertions by Trump. Ali and Trump are certainly the two most unapologetic and unabashed public proclaimers of their own superiority in my lifetime. Ali was an extraordinary boxing champion, almost as great as he said he was. However, what made him an historical figure and earned our enduring respect was not his talk or boxing. It was his courageous confrontation with our society about its policies of racial discrimination and about the country’s unwise war in Vietnam that was sapping its strength and spirit. Coincidentally, on the same day we learned about Ali’s death, a church service in Chapel Hill gave tribute to another person whose tenacious advocacy helped change our country for the better. Patricia Derian and her husband, Hodding Carter, came to Chapel Hill in 2005. While Carter, who had been spokesperson for the U.S. State Department during the Carter administration, became an active teacher and commentator, Derian was not so well known to us. Therefore some were surprised to read former President Jimmy Carter’s praise of her extraordinary work. “As the senior State Department official in charge of human rights during my administration, Patt spent hundreds of hours meeting with victims and

by guest columnist D.G. Martin their families. She became a champion of oppressed people around the world, helping me exert pressure on dictatorships from Argentina to South Korea. Because of her determination and effective advocacy, countless human rights and democracy activists survived that period, going on to plant the seeds of freedom in Latin America, Asia and beyond.” Similarly, The New York Times’s obituary showed her to be a tenacious fighter for human rights throughout the world, pushing her colleagues in government to use the country’s clout to pressure foreign governments to improve. For example, The Times wrote, “By most accounts, thousands of lives may have been spared because of her work. One big success came during Argentina’s ‘Dirty War,’ when teachers, lawyers, labor leaders and others were being seized by the country’s ruling junta, held without charges and in some cases executed as part of a so-called antiterrorism campaign. Ms. Derian

outraged Argentina’s military leaders when she brushed aside their denials of involvement in the abductions and murders of civilians. In one meeting with the military, in 1977, she whipped out a floor plan of a government building. ‘You and I both know that as we speak, people are being tortured in the next floors,’ she was quoted as saying. Jacob Timerman, an Argentine journalist who was tortured by the junta, said in 1977 that Ms. Derian had saved him from certain execution.” Earlier, in the 1960s in the times of Muhammad Ali, her tenacity had been honed fighting for equal rights in Mississippi. As Hodding Carter said about his wife, “She was the bravest person I ever knew. Stone cold killers did not faze her. She walked without apparent pause into face-to-face confrontation with evil – a murderous sheriff in Mississippi who specialized in back-shooting black folk, or a slick Argentinean junta leader who pretended he knew nothing of the torture center two floors below his office. She knew what was right and what was wrong; she knew the central thrust of America’s founding documents; she understood what Christ taught and the saints exemplified. She could not and would not stand silent as the Bill of Rights, international law and congressional intent were subverted, whether in the name of ‘our way of life’ or real politik.” By the time you read this, Trump’s “I am the greatest” will be back on TV. I will still be remembering Muhammad Ali and Patricia Derian.

Surgery not only option for back pain By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer Oh, my aching back. Almost everyone has uttered those words at one time or another, especially after strenuous exercise or a hard day at work. But for many people, an aching back is a constant problem not caused by activity. One of the most common back problems causing people to seek help from their doctors is lumbar spinal stenosis, which is a disorder caused by the narrowing of the spinal canal. “Lumbar spinal stenosis is a clinical syndrome, or a collection of symptoms, of lower extremity pain,” said Dr. Gerald Zupruk, a neurosurgeon with UNC Regional Physicians. Zupruk discussed this

DR. GERALD ZUPRUK

syndrome during a recent program at Millis Regional Health Education Center in High Point. “There may or may not be back pain with spinal stenosis,” said Zupruk. “There can be pain in the

buttocks and legs. It is associated with decreased space in the spine. In other words, the nerves are getting squeezed. “It is very common. Around 10 percent of us will experience symptoms sometime in life.” As with many ailments, spinal stenosis is most often a result of the aging process. Normal wear and tear causes open spaces in the spine to shrink, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves that travel from the spine to the arms and legs. While spinal stenosis may cause no symptoms in some people, other people may experience pain, tingling or numbness, and muscle weakness, especially in the legs. According to Zupruk, the classic presentation of symptoms

includes a dull or aching back pain that spreads to the legs, which become weak. The pain is worse when standing. Those with spinal stenosis tend to lean forward when sitting or walking because that position relieves the pain. The numbness, tingling and weakness in the limbs often lead to other problems. Those who suffer from spinal stenosis may become less physically active causing weight gain, worsening of other conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, and depression. Although getting X-rays, CT scans or MRIs help to determine if spinal stenosis is present, Zupruk said these pictures do not always tell the whole story. Some people whose scans indicate ste-

nosis have never experienced pain. Therefore, it is very important when making a diagnosis to have a complete medical workup in addition to scans. Zupruk said surgery is a good option for some stenosis patients. However, he prefers to try a variety of different treatments first, such as exercise, physical therapy or over-the-counter painkillers. “Every surgery carries some risk,” said Zupruk. “We want to try all other options first. We are always looking for better ways to do things to help our patients.”

JMS teacher receives math award

The importance of mathematics instruction in schools cannot be overestimated. To emphasize this reality, the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) strive to recognize and reward Secondary Teachers who exemplify mathematics teaching excellence by nurturing students’ enthusiasm through involvement in mathematics fairs, projects and competitions to supplement and enhance everyday classroom expe-

riences. This recognition is for those teachers who succeed in motivating students to excel in mathematics. Danielle Hendren, a seventh-grade teacher at Jamestown Middle School, received the Outstanding Secondary Mathematics Teacher Award, which recognizes and rewards secondary school teachers who exemplify mathematics teaching excellence. Hendren will receive a one-year membership in the NCCTM, a personalized award and recognition at the NCCTM State Conference in Greensboro.

Hendren has been in education for five years. Dr. Trent Vernon, principal, and the administrative team at JMS nominated her for the award. “We would love to nominate you for the NCCTM Outstanding Math Teacher recognition,” Vernon said in an email to Herdren. “We agree that you are a model teacher and would be a terrific representative for Jamestown Middle School and our math department. “I hope you know how much we appreciate your hard work and that we are honored to recommend you

for this recognition!” As part of the process, Hendren was required to complete an application form. Jen Arberg, M.Ed curriculum coordinator for Middle School Math Guilford County Schools, and Leigh Jones, executive director of secondary curriculum and instruction, presented the award to Hendren recently during an afterschool faculty meeting. JPL’s Summer Reading, Enrichment Program By CAROL REED Jamestown Public Library On Your Mark, Get Set… READ! at the library this summer, for children from preschool to fifth grade. Middle schoolers’ summer theme is Get in the Game – READ! Because our summer reading themes involve physical fitness and health, most of our programs will revolve around the sciences, competitions, sportsmanship and play, but we’ll also pay attention to nutrition and mental health some weeks. We open on June 23, at 10 a.m. with the whiz bang magic of Chris and Neal, two dynamite magicians who can make white doves and cockatoos appear out of books and explosions. Whole families and all ages, from preschool to retired folks, will love this program. You may remember their performance from two years ago. It is new and improved, if you can imagine any improvements. It was fantastic. Olympic stories and games, relay races, martial arts, yoga and more will fill the following weeks, with experts, gardeners and guest readers leading

the sessions. Crafts will abound, from Frisbees and rockets to growing tomatoes and lettuce. Mad Science will enlighten and entertain children and their parents. Dancing is good for the heart and soul, and could win teens some prizes with our GameStop partnership. Play sports trivia or Hunger Games tag (No blood will be shed, we promise.) We’ll have water games and field day, and plenty of opportunities to play with our food during the snack-sized version of “Chopped.” Close out the summer with movies for everybody. Besides the wonderful programs, we offer reading charts and prizes for children and teens as they keep up their skills by practicing reading and enjoying books all summer. Our prizes include exciting new books, puzzles and themed toys. The Grasshoppers baseball team donated lots of merchandise. Wouldn’t it be fun to go ice skating in July at The Ice House? Or your family can get artsy at the Greenhill ArtQuest Studios. Other prizes include tickets to Tweetsie and Kersey Valley Maze, or the Kersey Valley Ropes

for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before starting college. Starting in July, Say Yes and the respective university or college each student selects will verify enrollment and determine the amount of the lastdollar scholarship the student is eligible to receive. Say Yes will then disburse funds directly to the college or university. All together, Say Yes Guilford received 4,917 certification forms with 98 percent of all seniors who applied listed among

Local girl earns Girl Scout Silver award

Jessica Cook of Jamestown is among 223 girls from Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont to receive her Girl Scout Silver Award – the second highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. Girl Scout Cadettes in grades 6-8 who earn the Girl Scout Silver Award complete a minimum of 50 hours toward a service project that betters their community and leaves a lasting impact on those around them. Girls work in small groups or individually to design and execute the project,

building life skills, exploring careers, gaining leadership abilities and committing to self-improvement along the way. “The Girl Scout Silver Award projects leave behind a legacy the girls can be proud of,” said Lane Cook, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont. “It teaches our girls to become effective leaders, putting their skills into action to provide services and opportunities for people in their communities.”

GTCC part of federal experiment to extend Pell to high school students The U.S. Department of Education has selected GTCC as one of 44 postsecondary institutions in the United States to participate in an experiment that allows high school students taking college-credit courses to access Federal Pell Grants. As part of this experiment, an estimated 10,000 high school students will have the opportunity to access approximately $20 million in Federal Pell Grants to take dual enrollment courses provided by colleges and high schools throughout the nation. Nearly 80 percent of the selected sites are community colleges. GTCC is the only educational institution in NC to be selected to participate.

Dual enrollment, in which students enroll in postsecondary coursework while also enrolled in high school, is a promising approach to improve academic outcomes for students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. A growing body of research suggests that participation in dual enrollment can lead to improved academic outcomes, especially for students from low-income backgrounds and first-generation college students. Research suggests that participation in dual enrollment can lead to better grades in high school, increased enrollment in college following high school, higher rates of persistence in college, greater credit

accumulation and increased rates of credential attainment. GTCC currently offers Career and College Promise, a tuition-free program (based on eligibility requirements) that allows high school students to earn college credit toward an associate degree in arts or science or a diploma in a technical career. However, students are responsible for the cost of books and fees, which can often be a hindrance for many students who wish to enroll, Whitlow said. The new Department of Education experiment will help supplement those costs. Whitlow expects to see an increase in Career and College Promise as a result. GTCC will hold an information session for high school students and their parents who are interested in learning more about Career and College Promise as well as the new Pell grant experiment. The session will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 13 in the Percy H. Sears Applied Technologies building auditorium on the Jamestown Campus, 601 E. Main St., Jamestown. The session will include information on how to apply, eligibility and financial aid. The deadline to apply for financial aid is July 1. Boy Scouts get Eagle Awards

Members of Boy Scout Troop 17 who received their Eagle Awards during the past year were honored at a banquet May 9 in the fellowship hall at Jamestown United Methodist Church. Included in the group were Walker Dennis, Zachary Moore and Collin Black.

Walker Dennis – Dennis has participated in Scouting for approximately seven years. He began as a Bear and made his way through Cub Scouting, gaining an Arrow of Light. “It was interesting moving up to Boy Scouts,” Dennis said. “My parents weren’t there on camping trips anymore; I had to cook my food with only a little experience. Over the first year, I learned the tools of the trade and have now become the senior patrol leader of the troop.” Dennis decided to work on his Eagle before starting high school. After achieving the rank of Life Scout, he learned that only 5 percent of all Scouts obtain the rank of Eagle. Scouts who don’t earn Eagle either quit or age out. “I didn’t want to be juggling school and all of my other activities while trying to earn my Eagle,” he said. I decided to finish my Eagle and use my new leadership skills to help out my troop for a long time.” For his Eagle project, Dennis created adapted books for Haynes-Inman Education Center. He has volunteered at HaynesInman for five years and

wanted to do something that would help the students in that school. Dennis learned that planning was an important part of doing the Eagle project. “If I had not planned my project out, I would still be on square one,” he acknowledged. Dennis recently completed 9th grade. In addition to Scouts, he participates in Tae Kwon Do and is a 2nddegree black belt. He also has a level 3 yellow belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His short-term goals are to continue all three of these activities. He has yet to determine any long-term plans for the future. “I still have a bit of time on my hands to figure out what I’ll be doing,” he said.

enjoyed building and racing pinewood derby cars, camping, building campfires, cooking and exploring the outdoors. he earned the God and Family Award, Super Achiever Award and the Arrow of Light. Moore continued as a Boy Scout to fulfill his wish of becoming an Eagle Scout. He earned the God and Country Award and 43 merit badges. He participated in many campouts, service projects, summer and winter camps and merit badge colleges. He also attended the 2013 National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia. “Through my years of scouting, I have held many leadership roles and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow,” said Moore. “My most challenging but most rewarding experience has been the completion of my Eagle Project. It consisted of a four-unit changing room for the Junior ROTC program at my high school, a total of 283 service hours and raising $800 in donations and supplies.”

Scouting has led Moore to an interest in Aviation. He joined the Aviation Post in Greensboro where he has had the opportunity to build more friendships, camp, work air shows, learn more about aviation and fly planes. Currently, he is working on his PADI Scuba certification through the aviation post. Moore just finished his sophomore year at Trinity High School. He has participated in football, wrestling, track and JROTC. He also has completed his basic welding certification. This summer will be Moore’s third year participating in the Randolph County Junior Sheriff’s Academy. Moore plans to attend college to study aviation and get his pilot’s license. He wants to join the United States Navy and his ultimate dream is to become a Navy SEAL. “My Scouting experience will help me be better prepared for my military career and thereafter,” said Moore. “My family has played

Collin Black – As a first grader in 2004, Black began Scouting as a Tiger Scout. He earned the Arrow of Light and crossed over to Boy Scouts in 2009 with Troop 17. “I enjoyed Boy Scouts with Troop 17 and quickly moved through the ranks until high school sports slowed me down,” Black said. He did not quit, however, but continued to participate in Scouting. He especially enjoyed camping, biking, rifle and shotgun shooting, summer camps and working on his Eagle rank. At one summer camp, Moore became a BSA lifeguard and has worked as a lifeguard in the summer at a local pool. For his Eagle project, he elected to build an enclosure at Jamestown United Methodist Church that would be used to store cardboard for recycling and other materials. “This was a great project, offering experience in many types of construction including wood framing, roofing, vinyl siding and installing a steel door,” Black noted. “This project helped out the church greatly as they have needed a space like this for a long time, and the church

was willing to supply the materials.” Black learned that construction does not always follow a plan or schedule. He wanted to complete the project in two weekends, but it took closer to four. “This project was a big success because of the many volunteer helpers I had including my family, Kevin Reeves, fellow Scouts and leaders of Troop 17 and my Eagle advisor, Mike Mullins,” Black said. Black recently graduated from Southwest Guilford High School. While there, he was involved in many sports including soccer, swimming, lacrosse and cross country. He made sure to keep his academics his number one priority including several AP and Honors classes. Black plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering. By the time he graduates he hopes to have worked as an intern at a company and maybe work with them full time. He would like the opportunity to travel to new places and learn about different areas of the world. “If I have children, I will encourage them to join Scouting and hopefully participate as a leader in their pack or troop,” Black said. “I plan to be involved in my church. I will always be able to use the lessons I learned in Boy Scouts to help me and others get things done and accomplished.”

Millis Road hosted their annual art show after school on May 27. Each student presented a favorite piece of work created in Tammy Larrick’s art class for display. Artworks included paintings, collage, sewing, drawing, clay, multi-media and weaving. “I think it is important for students to take pride and ownership of not only their personal artwork but also the entire art show,” Larrick said. “This body of work truly represents the diversity and personality of our school.” Top left, Many fifth graders selected hands for the art display; bottom left, Kindergarteners were pleased with the pictures of pandas that they created. As I See It

by Shirley Adkins, Womack Publishing, Star Tribune When the risen Christ appeared to his followers for the last time before His ascension, He instructed them to stay in Jerusalem. He said to “tarry ye in the city.” In other words, don’t run out and start “doing things.” Wait. Sometimes we get so caught up in what we feel like we “have to do” that we miss the directive to tarry, to wait until the time is right. Jesus knew the disciples were not ready to convert the world. They didn’t have all they needed. What did they (and we) need? He said they would be “endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49) The followers of Christ did just what He asked them to do. They stayed together in Jerusalem, prayed a lot, fellowshipped together…. and waited. They weren’t sure what they were waiting for, but they waited. Acts 2 tells us what happened then. The followers were together “with one accord” and the Holy Spirit of God came down upon each of them. That is when they got busy. The city was filled with people from all over and these folks heard these Galileans speaking in their own languages. And the Word spread and souls got saved and Christianity started to spread from one place to another. The lesson to us is this. God has a timeline, a plan. If we just jump right in and take things into our own hands, we can mess up greatly. Sometimes we need to “tarry,” to wait for His directions. Sometimes we have to wait until God prepares another person’s heart to be receptive to His word. Sometimes we have to wait until WE are prepared to do His work in the right way. The early followers of Christ needed to have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. So do we. We need Him in our prayer life, in our physical lives and in our spiritual lives. We need to heed His direction. Jesus said to His early followers and to us, “But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) But, we can’t do it on our own.

Tammy Larrick, the art teacher at Millis Road Elementary School, took on the role of an End-of-Grade (EOG) fairy May 27 to encourage kids as they faced final testing. She is shown zapping fourth grader Isabella Bryant with “good wishes” as Bryant’s sister, second grade student Skylar looks on. “Every year we have a EOG pep rally at Ragsdale stadium,” Larrick explained. “Students in grades K-2 are not tested. They line up in rows on two sides and give kids in grades 3-5 high fives as they go down the middle. The Ragsdale High School cheerleaders and band members are also there to inspire students to do their best.” Millis Road sponsors a tacky teacher contest and students scream for whomever they think is “best dressed.” April Brown and Michele Collins, fourth grade teachers, tied for first place this year. Pancreatic cancer now third leading cause of cancer deaths By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer and is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. It is expected to claim the lives of 41,780 people in 2016 and more people will die from pancreatic cancer this year than from breast cancer. According to the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, “Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all major cancers. 94 percent of pancreatic cancer patients will die within five years of diagnosis – only 8 percent will survive more than five years. 74 percent of patients die within the first year of diagnosis. “The average life expectancy after diagnosis with metastatic disease is just three to six months.” The pancreas is only about six inches long but it has an important job in the body. It makes enzymes to help digest and break down foods, along with producing hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which control blood sugar levels. Several Jamestown residents are currently suffering from pancreatic cancer. They, and family members, were willing to talk to

the Jamestown News about the disease but asked to not be identified in this article. Like any cancer, you may have it but not know it. In 2008, Scientific American magazine wrote, “Pancreatic cancer is typically diagnosed at a late stage because it doesn’t cause symptoms until it’s too late. Weight loss, abdominal pain, jaundice [a yellowing of the skin due to toxic buildup in the liver] – those are the most common symptoms. They usually start after the tumor is a significant size. By then, chances are, it has metastasized [that is, spread to other parts of the body].” “I had no symptoms. It was found in a routine test.” said Jamestown resident Susan (name

has been changed). “I started thinking about my obituary. “The statistics were so grim, I didn’t even want to know about them. Pancreatic cancer does not have the success rate of some of the other (cancers).” Treatment procedures are improving every year and survival rates for people diagnosed early have also risen, but only slightly. Survival rates vary based on the type of cancer experienced. The five-year survival rate for stage I neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer is about 61 percent, according to the American Cancer Society, but only 1 percent for stage IV exocrine cancer. The size of the cancer tumor is a factor in survival, the larger the tumor, the lower

survival. Surgery can prolong the life of a pancreatic cancer patient and many outlive the five-year window. Other treatments include ablation or embolization treatments, radiation, chemotherapy, drugs and immunotherapy. Men over 40, smokers, drinkers and diabetics are prime candidates for pancreatic cancer. More and more women, however, are now being affected and some research indicates a family history of the disease could be a risk factor. One relative of a survivor in Jamestown said that other family members – especially men – should be tested on a regular basis for pancreatic cancer. In 2008, Scientific American magazine wrote, “When doctors do pancreatic cancer surgery, they take out 95 percent of the pancreas, including the tumor, and then they leave a small remnant of the pancreas in there that serves [the insulin-producing] functions.” Lives can be extended if pancreatic cancer is caught early, but only one in five patients survive a full year. Actor Patrick Swayze’s pancreatic cancer was caught early and he lived 20 months. Astronaut Sally Ride lived 17 months following her diagnosis. However, Apple founder Steve Jobs lived seven years after diagnosis and removal of his pancreas.

Other famous names who died of pancreatic cancer include actors Joan Crawford, Ben Gazzara, Anne Francis, Fred Gwynn, Rex Harrison, Michael Landon, Donna Reed, Pernell Roberts and Bonnie Franklin; singers Ray Price and Luciano Pavarotti; musicians Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Henry Mancini and Jack Benny. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was diagnosed in 2009 and is still judging cases, beating the five-year odds. Susan wants everyone to be alert to the problem of pancreatic cancer. “I feel like I need to pay it forward, to let somebody know who may not suspect that having stomach problems and having them go on and not treated and ending up too late.” November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month, but patients and physicians want the information to be in the forefront yearlong. There are many pancreatic cancer support groups online. For more information about pancreatic cancer, visit www.pan can.org or www.cancer.org.

County Hall of Fame inductees include Wyndham’s Long By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer A Wyndham Championship go-getter is one of 10 new members selected for the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame, class of 2016. Greensboro was on the verge of losing its PGA golf tournament, first played here in 1938, until Bobby Long stepped up. The retired insurance executive worked behind the scenes to save the tournament, now known as the Wyndham Championship, which was not on the PGA Tour schedule for 2007. The Greensboro Jaycees Charitable Foundation Board (later renamed the Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation Board) was formed in 2005 to oversee tournament operations. As chairman of the PTCF, Long devised a financial model that saved Greensboro’s spot on the PGA Tour, where it has thrived ever since. A long-time golfer, Long was instrumental in moving the tournament from Forest Oaks Country Club to Sedgefield Country Club. He worked as a liaison between sponsor Wyndham Worldwide and the PGA Tour. “He was the man who saved the tournament as far as I’m concerned,” said Wyndham Championship Tournament Director Mark Brazil. For Long, it was a matter

of bringing people together as a city and a region. This kind of vision was nothing new for Long. He was a key fundraiser to build Greensboro’s downtown baseball stadium and a key figure in the development of the Elon University School of Law, located in Greensboro. He is a graduate of North Carolina State with a double major in business and economics. Also included in the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame are Melvin Fair, who wrestled at Andrews High School; Tommy Grayson, head football coach at Eastern Guilford High School 1976-91; Delton Hall, who played football at Grimsley High School and six seasons in minor league baseball; Darlene Joyner, who played basketball and volleyball at Guilford College and coached at Northwest Guilford High School; Sue Shinn, who played volleyball, basketball and field hockey at High Point College and coached at Andrews High School; and Phil Weaver, who played at Grimsley High School and coached basketball and softball at Grimsley. Legends Class (posthumous induction) members for 2016 are Carlton Harris, who played tennis at Greensboro Day School; Bobby Hedrick, who played football at Eastern Guilford; and James A. “Bud” Kivett, who played football, baseball and track

at High Point Central and won numerous city golf championships; The induction ceremony will be held Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. on the arena floor of the Greensboro Coliseum. Individual tickets are $75. For ticket information, including table sponsorships, contact Demp Bradford at demp. bradford@greensboro-nc. gov. The Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame was established in 2005 to honor the outstanding achievements of individuals in the sports arena from Guilford County. The inductees represent a wide range of sports from basketball to motorsports to baseball to sports journalism. Some of the honorees have been recognized by having stadiums or gymnasiums named for them while others are recognized mostly in the hearts of the children they coached. Each honoree has left a unique footprint in Guilford County and represents the diversity and heritage of the county. Five easy ways to relax, recharge and have fun on a boat this summer (BPT) – Feeling stressed? Adding water to your summer plans may be one of the best remedies. More than four in five Americans say being around water relaxes them, and 72 percent feel healthier after spending time on the water, according to a 2015 Discover Boating survey by Wakefield Research. With Americans working longer hours, the need to take vacation time is greater than ever. Four in 10 Americans are not using all their paid time off (PTO), according to Project: Time Off’s 2015 research by GFK Public Affairs. One easy solution? Get out on the water and go boating. It not only benefits overall well-being, it’s also more accessible than many think. In fact, millions of Americans go boating each year on more than 15 million boats in the U.S., according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. “Today’s technology can make it difficult to fully disconnect and relax, which is why boating offers a unique solution,” says Carl Blackwell, president of Discover Boating. “Surrounded by water, fresh air and your favorite people makes a boat one of the rare places where you can focus on each other, forget about daily distractions and enjoy the outdoors.” Whether on vacation or staycation, there are fun, stress-free ways to get on the water. These insider

tips can help anyone get started in fishing, wakesurfing, sailing, personal watercraft and cruising this summer. Take a class. Sign up for a boating lesson to hone those powerboating, sailing or watersports skills by mastering the basics while having fun along the way. Popular options around the U.S. include boating classes, on-water training courses, watersports camps, youth boating programs and more. Join a club. Find a boat club near you for a hassle-free and cost-sharing way to access a versatile fleet of boats. Simply pay a monthly fee and book your time online. Most boat clubs take care of docking, cleaning and maintenance, with members responsible for fuel. Plus, most offer extensive boater education

courses as part of the membership. Share the fun. Share the fun and the budget. Fractional ownership programs are similar to boat clubs offering shared access to boats paired with maintenance and education, with a few subtle differences – an annual fee versus monthly dues and assignment of members to a particular boat, similar to a property timeshare instead of a fleet of boats. Rent a boat. Rental options are available on most waterways and provide hourly or daily access to a variety of boat types. Rental outfitters provide tutorials on operating a boat, share safety instructions and offer suggestions on destinations. Another rental option new to the market are peer-to-peer rentals, allowing you to

rent someone else’s boat, which usually includes insurance and captains for hire to help you set sail. Charter a trip. Explore new waters and experience the boating lifestyle by chartering a boat trip with family or friends. Chartering offers options – bareboat (with no captain) or crewed (with captain and crew) for a few days or weeks long. Pick your preferences and chart your course. Find your way on the water by using Discover Boating’s get on the water interactive tool, just enter your zip code to find rentals, boat clubs and more close to home. If you’re curious about owning a boat, whether new or previously owned, take the next step and research all your options on DiscoverBoating.com.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was award-winning Canadian novelist, poet and literary critic Margaret Atwood who made the following sage observation: “War is what happens when language fails.” • Many people don’t realize that the parachute was invented before the airplane. The first person to use a parachute and survive was Louis-Sebastien Lenormand, who jumped off the tower of the Montpelier Observatory in 1783. • You’ve doubtless heard of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven” – or at least the famous line “Quoth the Raven, nevermore.” When the poem was published in 1845, it immediately

became wildly popular, catapulting the previously obscure poet to national celebrity. Future president Abraham Lincoln liked it so much that he reportedly committed the lengthy verse to memory. Despite criticism from such literary lights as William Butler Yeats (who called the poem “insincere and vulgar … its execution a rhythmical trick”) and Ralph Waldo Emerson (who said, “I see nothing in it”), the popularity of “The Raven” continued unabated, inspiring a plethora of parodies, including “The Gazelle,” “The Turkey” and “The Pole-Cat.” Popularity didn’t translate into financial success, however; Poe died in 1849, shortly after being found a penniless wanderer

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Midnight Special” (PG) – Roy (Michael Shannon) has just kidnapped his own son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), from a Southern cult (led by Sam Shepherd) that wanted to use the boy for his supernatural abilities – he sees and hears things we don’t, and other worldly lights emanate from his eyes and hands. Of course, the government wants control over the boy, and it has a quick-thinking NSA specialist (Adam Driver) trying to unravel the mystery while the manhunt unfolds. Joel Edgerton and Kirsten Dunst also are there to assist getting Alton to his destination, but what awaits him there remains shrouded in intrigue. Director Jeff Nichols lets the special effects (though

admirable) take a backseat to the suspense and powerful performances, notably from Shannon – an intense actor who is great at depicting men with thunderstorms hiding behind stoic faces. Some viewers might not find satisfaction in the concluding act, but everyone can appreciate the road it takes to get there. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” (PG-13) – More than a decade after their endearingly quirky nuptials, Toula and Ian (Nia Vardalos and John Corbett) are trying to re-spice their relationship while anxiously preparing for the collegedeparture of their eye-rolling teen daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouras). It also turns out that Toula’s parents were never technically married because the priest back in Greece never signed the marriage certificate, so there’s another overblown wedding to plan as a centerpiece for the family comedy. Those who were pleasant-

ly surprised by the charming nature of the original will sadly see anything unique and surprising washed away – it’s strictly formula and gags-by-numbers this time around. Much of the cast returns for this sequel, but many of them seems at a loss when it comes to reproducing that initial charm. “The Brothers Grimsby” (R) – The ultraraunchy comedy from Brit comic Sacha Baron Cohen follows two young orphan brothers, separated as children and reunited as a mismatched action team. Nobby (Baron Cohen) is a moronic yokel and drunkard, who’s overplayed redeeming quality is his love for his younger brother, Sebastian (Mark Strong), who has grown into a killer super-spy for MI-6. Cohen’s comedy used to laugh at things we weren’t comfortable acknowledging, but now it’s mostly about butts and gross-outs. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

CONTRACT BRIDGE

Avoidance play

By STEVE BECKER

Assume you’re in three notrump and West leads a spade. East covers dummy’s queen with the king, and you win with the ace. Since your most promising suit is clubs, there is a strong temptation to lead a club to the queen at this point – but it is best to resist that temptation. East might take the queen with the ace and return a spade, putting the contract in danger if the clubs turn out to be divided unfavorably. In the actual case, if you play a club toward dummy at trick two, you eventually finish down one. It is far better to lead a diamond to the jack at trick two and play a low club toward your hand. If East has the ace and takes it, the contract becomes certain, while if West has the ace, he can do you no harm whatever he returns. After winning the club with the jack at trick three, you continue to guard against the danger of East’s gaining the lead. Abandoning clubs for the moment, you lead a dia-

mond to the queen and return a low heart from dummy. This is sure to tie East into a knot again if he has the ace, since if he plays it, you have nine tricks, while if he plays low instead, you remain on firm ground. In the actual deal, you win the heart with the king and establish your ninth trick

by reverting to clubs. The strategy employed here is called avoidance play. Declarer proceeds in such a way that the dangerous defender – in this case East – cannot play high, except at the cost of a vital trick or tricks. Played this way, the contract is certain against any lie of the cards. © 2016 King Features

LEMON BLUEBERRY PANCAKES

Versatile soy adds variety, boosts nutrition (Family Features) Whether you’re looking to scale back on animal products or simply want to add some variety to your cooking repertoire, soy may be your solution. Soy is the only plant with protein comparable to meat, eggs and dairy, and it provides health benefits, including heart, muscle and bone strength. It is also the only protein recognized by the FDA for its role in reducing cholesterol and risk of heart disease. If you’re uncertain how to cook with soy, you may be surprised by the diverse

ways you can incorporate this nutrient-rich food into your meals and snacks. As these recipes show, it’s easy to cook with soy throughout the day, from fluffy breakfast pancakes to a fresh take on hummus or a delicious tofu dinner loaded with flavor. In addition to the nutrition benefits and versatility, soy uses fewer natural resources, such as water and land, than any other protein source, so you can feel good about making it a star ingredient in your kitchen. Find more recipes and inspiring ideas for cooking with soy at soyfoods.org.

Surprising uses for soy Looking for creative ways to incorporate more soy into your diet? You may be surprised by all the ways you can build delicious snacks and meals around this plant protein: Tofu: extra-firm replaces meat protein in recipes such as grilled kabobs and sandwiches, or use soft or silken in place of mayonnaise and sour cream in creamy dishes, such as soups and dips. Edamame: serve these green soybeans in the pod for an appetizer or add to dishes, such as chili or stir-fry, for protein-packed flavor and texture.

Soymilk: ideal for beverages such as smoothies and lattes, over cereal and in cooked dishes, such as puddings or custards. Dairy alternatives: a wide range of dairy-free products are available, including soy-based “yogurt,” “cheese” and frozen desserts. Soy crumbles: perfect for chili, spaghetti sauce and tacos, this “veggie ground” contains 75 percent less fat than ground beef. Soy flour: improves taste and texture and elevates the nutrition profile when mixed with wheat flour.
