Sign of support

With everything that has been happening involving police officers in recent days, Jeffrey Brommer of Jamestown felt he had to do something to show his support. That support was in the form of holding a sign at the corner of East Main Street and Guilford Road on Monday. Many vehicles tooted their horn and drivers gave a thumbs up or peace sign as they passed Brommer. “There’s a lot we can do to say thank you (to the police),” Brommer said. “It’s important they know how much people care about them.”

FOX 8 news reporter Alex Rose, above right, and photojournalist Daniel Markus highlighted qualities of Jamestown during a broadcast in the town July 13.

Jamestown among best places to live in N.C. By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Residents of Jamestown were probably more pleased than surprised to learn their town was 12th in the Top Best Places to Live in North Carolina. Some even thought it should have ranked better. SmartTravel.Tips recently compiled the list and Alex Rose of FOX8 News found it while searching travel sites. He contacted Jamestown Town Manager Chuck Smith and on July 13 did a short essay on the six o’clock news about Jamestown and Elon, another Piedmont town that was third on the list. The top 12 towns in order included Pinehurst, Davidson, Elon, Winterville, Holly Springs, Trent Woods, Apex, Cary, Black Mountain, Valdese, North Chase and Jamestown. Although small in population, approximately 4,000 people, Jamestown has always been big in its support of education, one of the qualities on which the towns were judged. The historic town can boast of the first medical school in North Carolina and classes for AfricanAmerican youths by the Quaker community during times of slavery. Today, five schools within its boundaries and two in its

extra-territorial jurisdiction (including an elementary school and community college) help keep the average test scores of Jamestown 15 percent higher than the national average. Statistics show that 91 percent of its residents are high school graduates and 42 percent hold a college degree. Other figures show unemployment 50 percent and poverty 28 percent lower than the national average, while the median household income is 53 percent higher. Add to that the fact the overall crime rate for Jamestown is 68 percent lower making it a safer place to live and the small town nestled between High Point and Greensboro carries a big punch for excellence. “All this information could be found through census, crime, poverty and unemployment data,” said Smith. “Then it was likely just compared to the national average.” Smith posted the information about Jamestown being named 12th among the top 12 places to live and in less than 24 hours, the post had reached over 24,000 people. There were 2,866 likes to the Facebook page, more than what any other stories on the town’s Facebook page has garnered in the past. “It has really been far reaching,” Smith said.

(Photos/Norma B. Dennis)

“There have been comments such as ‘Wow,’ ‘It should have been number one,’ and ‘I liked living there in the 70s and going to Ragsdale.’ “A lot of people are sharing that post and that says a lot about Jamestown.” Statistics being what they are, the most telling quality for Jamestown is its small-town atmosphere and sense of community. “I was raised here and raised my son here so I have deep family roots in the community,” said resident Martha Wolfe. “I like that hometown atmosphere and the friendly people. It is a close-knit community where you can always run into someone you know. “I also like that everything you need is within the town limits – banks, grocery store, post office, restaurants. When I was 18 years old I couldn’t wait to get out of Jamestown and go out west to college. But as soon as I got there, I realized I had made a big mistake and came back to Jamestown as soon as I could.”

Blue lines show area to be rezoned.

Another zoning problem arises By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer

According to many Jamestown residents, the town-wide rezoning in July 2009 caught many by surprise – not at the time but months and even years later when it came time to sell or improve their property. Since that time, sevNorma B. ous zoning. Most notable is the original Forestdale neighborhood, which came to light when owners of the former Potter House property requested rezoning for a drive-through restaurant. The residential neighborhood had been rezoned to Commercial/Main Street Transitional (C/MST) from Single Family Residential (SFR), angering residents who did not want to see commercial businesses enter. The most recent request

was heard at the July 11 Planning Board. Robert Lackey and Michael Bryant, owners of a four-unit apartment complex at 210 Oakdale Road, requested a change from Single Family Residential (SFR) to Conditional Zoning Multi-Family Residential (CZ-MFR). “This is really just paperwork,” said Planning Board Chair Art Wise, “to settle something that got caught in the shuffle.” Town Planner Carrie See ZONING, page A7

Watersheds play important part in everyday life By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer

Did you know Jamestown is in a watershed? Several, to be exact. “So what?” you may ask. “What’s a watershed?” The answer is a big “what.” Everyone lives in a watershed area, that is, a high land area or ridge that seeps or drains (sheds) water from rain or melting snow into a low point. That water collects into a lake, creek, river or even a wetland before traveling on into an ocean.

“Jamestown has three watersheds: City Lake (Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. City Lake), Oakdale, and Randleman,” said Jamestown Public Services Director Paul Blanchard. “All three are in the Deep River watershed, which is part of the Cape Fear River Basin. The state has 17 river basins. Cape Fear is the largest. “The City Lake Watershed includes the following Jamestown areas and neighborhoods: most of

original Forestdale, Woodbine, Quarterpath Trace, the Penny Road area; and Cedar Creek. It also includes Cedarwood, which is in our ETJ. “The Oakdale Watershed includes the areas along Deep River from City Lake Park to the Oakdale Mill site,” Blanchard added. “The neighborhoods in the Oakdale watershed include Riverwalk, Misty Waters Channel Cove, most of the areas along Main Street from Robbins Street

to Teague Drive, Penny Heights (Lee, Moore and Jackson streets and the Hillstone Drive area) and the Oakdale Mill area. While Jamestown is in the Cape Fear River Basin, signs on East Main Street and Oakdale Road at Bull Run Creek and at Deep River on West Main Street (Photo/Carol Brooks) indicate the land drains into Sign indicates Randlethe Randleman Lake Wa- man Lake Watershed. tershed. HP police to hold community forum High Point Police Chief Kenneth Shultz and the High Point Police Department will hold a community forum on Thursday, July 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chamber, 211 South Hamilton St. In light of the media attention in recent weeks surrounding police/community interaction, the forum will serve to explain how High Point does policing in a way that has helped the community avoid many of the issues that other departments face around the country. “We have a nationally acclaimed police department with a great story to tell that the community needs to hear. The more we tell the story, the easi-

er it will be to understand what sets our men and women in uniform apart,” observed City Manager Greg Demko. “Combine that with a community that has done its part to keep High Point safe and I don’t think there is any doubt that we have something special in High Point,” he said. Attendees will be asked to submit their questions throughout the night. These questions will be read and answered by the Chief immediately following his presentation. For more information about the community forum, call the Communications and Public Engagement Department at 336-8833124 or 336-883-8507.

Tenth rabies case this year confirmed The Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health is alerting residents that a fox found on Logandale Court in Greensboro tested positive for the rabies virus on July 12. There were two human exposures. This is the 10th confirmed case of animal rabies in 2016. North Carolina law requires that all domestic pets (cats, dogs and ferrets), whether living inside or outside, age 4 months or older be vaccinated. Even animals that are confined in outdoor fenced areas should have current rabies vaccinations, because wild animals can get into

Police offer Craigslist transaction advice in video Craigslist has fast become the “go to” place for connecting to buy and sell items. Everyone loves a deal, but what price are you willing to pay for a bargain? Between years 2014 and 2015 Greensboro has seen a 13 percent increase in robberies of people related to Craigslist and a 33 percent increase in fraud cases that deals with obtaining property by false pretense. An example of this would be paying for concert tickets that later proved to be fraudulent. The Greensboro Police Department wants to reduce the crimes associated with on-line classified ads by offering prospective buyers and sellers sound safety advice when conducting the transactions. Working alongside senior NC A&T Journalism Mass Communication major Charlotte Jones and producers from the Greensboro Televsion Network, officers wrote and filmed a video to educate, alert and change behaviors when using Craigslist. Part of the “Don’t Let This Be You” series, the scenarios in public service announcement mirror actual events taken from police reports. The video can be viewed at https://www.you

Buying and selling through Craigslist and similar sites can be a fast and profitable way to gain new merchandise and earn extra cash. Taking precautions and reducing your risk of becoming a victim is much more valuable than any of the stuff and monetary gain you may earn. The “Don’t Let This be You” video reinforces these lessons with a dose of realism that should convince anyone to conduct the exchange at a police station.

Watkins, who helped produce the video. “It’s important that people understand they can control when and where to meet someone to buy or sell an item. We always recommend that the transaction occur at a police station.” The Police Headquarters at 320 Federal Place is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Calm seas, beautiful scenery, excellent fishing make trip worthwhile By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer An experience with seasickness while fishing for tuna years ago was enough to make Harold Proctor leery of deep-sea fishing. But at the encouragement of hunting buddy Shanon Spivey, he decided to try it again. Spivey and Clyde Gray were planning a fishing excursion to Homer, Alaska, which needed six participants. Proctor agreed to join the group for its recent trip. “I just decided if I was going to do stuff like that, I better go ahead and do it,” Proctor, an avid hunter and fisherman, said. Gray, who often enjoys fishing at the coast, tries to make the Alaskan fishing trip about every two years. “June is the opening month of halibut season,” he said. “The best time to fish is at a high, slack tide on the last quarter of the moon.” Since Gray and friends have been going to Alaska to fish, he has seen several changes in the sport. “Homer claims to be the halibut capitol of the world,” Gray said. “When we first started going there, you were allowed to catch two halibut a day and it did not matter what size they were. Now you can only catch four a year. If you catch two in one day, one has to be over 28 inches long and the other under that.” There are also limits on other fish. You may catch a total of five rockfish, but only one can be colored. Salmon is limited to two a day or five for the season. “We were catching so many salmon that the captain said it was the best run he had seen in three or four years,” Gray said. “We were the only boat consistently pulling them in.” In order to fish, a threeday or seven-day out-ofstate license is required. The men chartered their fishing trip with DeepStrike Sportfishing LLC. The boat was the Grand Aleutian, captained by David Baynes. It was the first time they had used

that service. “The captain we used to fish with retired and recommended David,” Gray said. “Now I would use no other.” Proctor noted that the captain and first mate, a young woman named Hastings Frank, a.k.a. Bob to the fishermen, make the trip exciting for the group. “The trip was all about us,” he said. “They did everything they could to make us happy. One day we spent about 30 or 40 minutes watching killer whales (orca) swimming around our boat. The captain stopped so we could take pictures.” During the weeklong Alaskan trip, the men fished three days and caught approximately 1,200 pounds of fish. After they were cleaned and vacuum-sealed for transportation, the men brought home 520 pounds of fileted fish, which they divided among themselves. “It is the most we have ever caught,” Gray said. When not fishing, the men enjoyed a bit of sightseeing. Their cabin was across a bay from a large glacier and the men saw lots of wildlife. “The worst part of the trip was it never got dark,” Proctor commented. “We had 23 hours of daylight, which made it hard to sleep. “We supposedly had a resident Moose with two babies and since it was light I looked for them any time I got up during the night. But I never saw them.” Gray admitted that the seven-hour plane ride from Atlanta to Anchorage was also difficult, but the scenery and fishing once they arrived were worth any discomfort. As for Proctor’s worry about getting seasick, that did not happen. “I took some (motion sickness pills) to help me on the boat and I never got really sick,” he said. “That made my trip so good. I would definitely like to go again.”

Top: Participants in the Alaska fishing trip included friends and acquaintances, from left, Clyde Gray, Gerald Pitts, Shanon Spivey, Harold Proctor, Jay Jackson and Larry Stephenson. Bottom left: The boat’s first mate, Hastings Frank, called Bob by the six fishermen, left, posed with Harold Proctor after he reeled in a copper rockfish. CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Our two great Robert Morgans North Carolinians of my generation have been blessed with two important Robert Morgans. One is the mountain-born-and-raised and acclaimed writer who is featured this week on North Carolina Bookwatch for his latest novel, Chasing the North Star. The other, the former U.S. senator, died on Saturday. My dream had been that author Morgan would write a book about Sen. Morgan. Author Morgan has shown he can write beautifully and authoritatively about historical figures. Remember, for example, Boone, his wonderful biography of Daniel Boone, and Lions of the West, his collection of studies about Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, John Johnny Appleseed Chapman, David Crockett, Sam Houston, James K. Polk, Winfield Scott, Kit

by guest columnist D.G. Martin Carson, Nicholas Trist and John Quincy Adams. A few years ago in this column I raised this question: Who is the most interesting North Carolina political figure yet to be the subject of a major biography? Back then my nomination for the most interesting potential biography was former Sen. Morgan. Here, slightly revised, is how I explained my sug-

MOMENTS IN TIME

• On July 22, 1923, John Dillinger joins the Navy in order to avoid charges of auto theft. A decade later, Dillinger’s reputation was forged in a single 12-month period, during which he robbed more banks than Jesse James did in 15 years. • On July 23, 1984, Vanessa Williams gives up her Miss America title, the first resignation in the pageant’s history, after Penthouse magazine announces plans to publish nude photos of the beauty queen. • On July 24, 1911, American archeologist Hiram Bingham gets his first look at Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca settlement in Peru. The site itself stretches for 5 miles, with over 3,000 stone steps linking its many levels. Today, more than 300,000 people visit every year. • On July 21, 1775, Patriot minutemen in whaleboats raid Little Brewster Island, in Boston Harbor. The raiders temporarily drove off the island’s British guard before burning the wooden parts of the point’s lighthouse. Ten days later, 300 minutemen returned to the island to prevent the British from making repairs. • On July 25, 1898, during the Spanish-American War, U.S. forces launch an invasion of Puerto Rico. With only seven deaths, U.S. troops under Gen. Nelson Miles were able to secure the island by mid-August. • On July 26, 1908, the FBI is born when U.S. Attorney General Charles Bonaparte orders a group of 10 newly hired federal investigators to report to the Department of Justice. Notorious gangsters such as George “Machine Gun” Kelly and John Dillinger met their end at the hands of the FBI. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

N.C. HISTORY • July 21, 2011 – The U.S. Federal Election Committee ruled that John Edwards, the former North Carolina presidential candidate, must repay $2.3 million to the U.S. Treasury mostly as a result of excessive matching funds that his 2008 campaign accepted. On Aug, 5 the U.S. Federal Election Commission ruled that Edwards must repay $2.2 million. • July 22, 1587 – A second English colony of 114-150 people under John White, financed by Sir Walter Raleigh, was established on Roanoke Island off North Carolina. • July 22, 1941 – George Clinton, American musician and the principal architect of P-Funk was born in Kannapolis. He was the mastermind of the bands Parliament and Funkadelic during the 1970s and early 1980s. • July 22, 1967 – Carl Sandburg (89), historian and poet (Abraham Lincoln: Prairie Years), died in Flat Rock • July 22, 2008 – North Carolina-based Wachovia Corp., the 4th largest U.S. bank, lost $8.86 billion in the second quarter. • July 23, 1993 – In South Carolina, Larry Demery and Daniel Green came upon James Jordan sleeping in his car and proceeded to rob him. As Jordan awoke Green shot Jordan, the 56-year-old father of basketball star Michael Jordan. Green was found guilty of murder in April 1995. Demery pleaded guilty in May 1995 • July 25, 1729 – North Carolina became a royal colony.

gestion. Maybe my decision was influenced by a canoe trip a group of us made with the aging former senator down the Cape Fear River from Lillington to his home a few miles downstream. On the way down the river I heard for the first time some stories about North Carolina politicians. But it is not only the stories that make me wish for a good biography of Morgan. A close look at his career could help us begin to see an answer to the question people so often ask about North Carolina. How could the same people have chosen to have a conservative like Jesse Helms and a liberal like Terry Sanford serving them in the U.S. Senate at the same time? You could come close to an answer if you could understand how Morgan

could have been an enthusiastic supporter of liberal Frank Graham in his 1950 U.S. Senate campaign and then manage the 1960 gubernatorial campaign for segregationist candidate Dr. I. Beverly Lake. Or if you could figure out how Morgan developed a conservative reputation as a state senator and then, when elected state attorney general in 1968, made the office a vigorous consumer advocacy agency. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974 as a moderate, with considerable support from conservatives, he was defeated six years later by a campaign that defined him as an ultra-liberal. A few years later Morgan worked for liberal Walter Mondale’s campaign for president. So what was Morgan – a conservative or a liberal? I think his biographer

will find he was both, and he was neither – like most North Carolinians. Maybe the stories will help. Morgan always felt a great affection for Beverly Lake, but he said that he tried to get Lake to take a more moderate position on school segregation in the 1960 gubernatorial campaign. Morgan remembers, “Dr. Lake said, ‘Now Robert, you have to remember that it is in the middle of the road where you are most likely to get hit and killed.’” Morgan thought people of different persuasions could work together if they could put ideology aside. Morgan told me that one of legendary UNC playwright and professor Paul Green’s cousins was very conservative even by Harnett County standards. Nevertheless, when Morgan brought the liberal

Sen. George McGovern to Harnett County, Green’s cousin and McGovern ate breakfast together at the local café. Later Green’s cousin told Morgan that he might have voted for McGovern for president if he had only known him before. Good stories and a possible answer to why North Carolina has both a conservative and a liberal face could make author Robert Morgan’s biography of Sen. Robert Morgan an important contribution to the understanding of our state’s history, and a great read.

games dropped the risk of memory decline by 14 percent, making crafts lowered it 16 percent, socializing saw a 23 percent drop and reading cut it by 30 percent. Computer use had the greatest effect at 42 percent. What researchers don’t know, however, is exactly

how it works – whether it’s because of the lifestyle that computers users have or because using a computer actually causes brain changes. Still to be determined: whether increased participation or computer use would yield an even bigger reduction in risk. What does this mean for us? It means we should stay engaged, learn new things, accept challenges, be active and go out and socialize. We could even combine activities: Take a computer class that meets at least once a week, and afterward

go out for lunch and coffee with a group of students. Or use the Internet to look up craft and hobby instructions and get ideas for new projects, or meet with a group to create crafts together. Use the Internet to sign up for news feeds and stay up on current events, or join a current events meet-up and socialize at the same time. There are lots of possibilities, and all could have a positive outcome.

How to balance job, kids and dreams Q. I’m 29 and feel like I’m stuck; all I do is work at minimum wage in a pub. I have two small children and a fiance I see when I can. I try to do the house wifey jobs, be a mum and work, but I’m struggling and getting more in debt. My fiance wants me to be a housewife and pay my wages but I enjoy earning money. I’m losing precious time with my kids but don’t know what else I can do. I want a proper job like social services where I can be around people but also spend time with my children and boyfriend. A. It’s good that your fiance is willing to support you so that you can be a mother to your children. Raising healthy, emotionally strong and courageous children is the most important social service job you

can have, one that is often neglected in our desire for our own self-fulfillment. I suggest you accept the financial support your fiance offers and take a class in the area you’d like to work in or do some parttime volunteering or parttime work in the field you want to gain experience in so you’ll have the tools you need to have a rewarding career when the children are grown. Build your skills while the children are growing up but put your family first now. You only get one chance to do it right. Being a mom is a full-time job; being a wife is a full-time job. Adding another full-time job is just too much. Best Regards, SaraJ

Computer use pays mental dividends for seniors Using a computer just once a week can help seniors avoid memory and thinking declines by a whopping 42 percent. So says a recent Mayo clinic study. This wasn’t a small study. Nearly 2,000 seniors participated, and all were age 70 and over. Four years earlier they had filled out a questionnaire that covered playing games, making crafts, socializing, reading magazines and computer use. Researchers then tracked them over time. Fight with mom got physical Q. I know I should respect my mother, but sometimes neither of us respects the other. I’m 19, and she and I have the same personality so we clash a lot. I love her, but yesterday she said she couldn’t stand me. In her anger she shoved me and yelled in my face; when I pushed her away she told me to keep my hands off her. Then she yelled at my sisters telling them to stop acting like me. I don’t know what to do. Help? A. You and your mother could try to get into the habit of biting your tongues. Arguing and pushing isn’t healthy and it sets a poor example for your sisters. You are nearly an adult and need to learn to act like one. You can’t expect your mother to change unless you do so yourself. As a start, apologize to

your mother. She should do that too, but you owe it to her to take the first step. Second, think about what you do that makes things harder for her. That is not an excuse for what happened, but think about what kinds of things create tension. Then Google “anger management.” Learn how to cope with tension and anger and find resources and services that are available. Some day all of this will be in the past. Do your part in getting there soon. Best regards, HomerB

Girls form team to complete Girl Scout Silver project By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Every since Juliette Gordon Lowe began the first troop in 1912 in Savannah, Ga., the Girl Scouts organization hasbeen striving to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. As they worked on their Silver Award, Girl Scouts’ second highest honor, Greta Wagner and Josie Banner have set an example of all that Girl Scouting encompasses – courage to try something new, confidence as they sought help from strangers and character as they supported their community. Their Silver Award project included building a large bench to place along the trail that winds around the lake at Adams Farm, where the girls live. Both girls have been involved in Scouting since they were 5 years old. They are members of Cadette Troop 40936, which meets at the Jamestown Public Library with leaders Jamie Cyrus and Allison Hocker. “Greta and I thought we would make good partners to work on a project together,” Josie said “Since we both live in Adams Farm we decided that building a bench would be a good way to give back to the community.” The girls emailed the property manager to see what type of bench would

be appropriate. He suggested making one similar to three other benches made as Eagle Scout projects. “Ours will be better,” Josie said. “We are using the same style, but it will be twice as big so more people can use it at one time. It is located in a shady spot. “It is also handcrafted by Girl Scouts,” Josie added with a smile. “The bench has a natural look, but we plan to landscape around it with bushes and flowers so it will look even nicer,” Greta said. The girls began by submitting their project plans to the Girl Scout Council. Josie carried out a major fundraising project that netted $401. She made and sold Oreo ice cream pies and dog treats and collected donations from the community. The money will be used to pay for the landscaping and a plaque to place on the bench stating it is a Girl Scout Silver Award project. Greta first wrote a letter to Lowe’s in High Point and then talked to the manager personally about donating some of the materials for the bench. “We are so grateful that they donated all the materials,” she said. Greta also discussed the type of plaque to be used with Coy Conklin at Triad Trophy Shop. He not only helped her select the best one, but shared information about how the process used to be done compared with

how it is done today. The girls’ fathers, Ken Banner and Tracy Wagner, served as mentors in the actual construction of the bench and provided help with the heavy lifting needed for the construction. The girls kept a log of all the activities leading to the project’s culmination and their family documented their work with pictures. “This is the first time I have done such a project and I learned a lot about building,” Greta said. Josie agreed and is pleased that their project can be enjoyed by their families and the entire community. “We were not just building a bench, but we are building a community,” she said. The girls put the bench into place on July 16 and hope to complete the landscaping by mid-August when they will hold a dedi-

cation of the bench and small reception. In the fall Josie will attend the STEM Early College at North Carolina A&T and Greta will go to Ragsdale

High School, where she hopes to continue playing soccer at the high school level. Both girls plan to stay in Scouting and want to work toward getting the

Girl Scout Gold Award.

The project almost completed, the girls take a break to enjoy their success.

Pokemon Go By LILLIAN CARDEN Jamestown Public Library

As you may have heard, the new smartphone application called Pokemon Go has been released and is quickly gaining popularity all over the world, including right here in Jamestown. The app features a game with augmented reality, which means that players (called trainers in the game) walk around in the real world and interact with both physical and digital objects to catch creatures based on the trading card game Pokemon. As players walk around in the real world, their phones’ GPS signals track their location and notify them of nearby digital Pokemon to catch. Trainers also can interact with PokeStops, which are realworld locations, usually a historic marker or public building. These stops have items that trainers can win, such as extra Pokeballs, powerups or potions. Once a trainer has several Pokemon and has reached a high enough level, they can battle other trainers at gyms, which are located at public buildings or parks. The Jamestown Public Library is one of these gyms. I collected Pokemon trading cards when I was a kid, so I was very excited to try out this new game on my phone. I was even more excited when I realized that the game required you to

actually walk around in the real world to find all the stops. My husband and I both got the game on our phones and decided to walk around Jamestown for the evening and play. We found that there were many PokeStops, Gyms and Pokemon all over Jamestown. As we walked around town looking for Pokemon to catch, we met several groups of people who were also playing the game on their phones. Two young boys that we met were already several levels ahead of us and gave us pointers on where to find the best stops. Another group that we met informed us that the library was one of the big gyms in Jamestown. Although my trainer in the game had not yet reached a level high enough to battle other trainers at the gyms, I’m sure if I keep playing, I will reach that level soon. In addition to walking in order to find all the locations in the game, some aspects of the game require you to walk certain distances to unlock objects. I found this out when my app told me I had to walk a 5K in order to “hatch” a virtual egg and get a new Pokemon. Like a lot of people, I am not easily motivated to exercise – but I got walking right away to try to hatch that egg. It may turn out to be just another fad, but the Pokemon Go app is a great way to encourage people of

all ages and backgrounds to get some exercise outside, meet new people, go new places and have fun. Obviously, I’m a huge fan of the library and spend a lot of time there, but there are probably many residents of Jamestown who don’t. Maybe this new app will help those people connect with the library and other great places in town they may not know about. (Editor’s note: Be careful when playing this game. Some people have already been injuried from not looking where they were walking.)

Benefit to help local hair stylist

By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Longtime Jamestown hair stylist Ruth Kiger has always made it a point to help customers or community members in need. She has sponsored food drives, collected donations, cut hair for people in retirement facilities and even gone to funeral homes to provide a final style for customers. Now that Kiger is facing a battle with cancer, her church, Groometown Baptist, is sponsoring a fundraiser to help with her medical bills, and is inviting the community to participate. Members are hosting a yard sale at the church, 4202-A Groometown Road, Greensboro, on July 30 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. In conjunction with the yard sale there will be a bake sale also. A hot dog sale will be held from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (under the shelter on the left side of the church), during which time musical entertainment will be provided. Kiger always aspired to be a hair stylist, but got in trouble at age 9 for a choppy haircut she gave her sister. She later began to fix hair for her mother and aunt, and finally took cosmetology classes. She has cut and styled hair professionally for approximately 39 years. After working for another beautician, Kiger decided to open her own shop in High Point. In 1993, she moved her shop, Divine Designs, to 705 W. Main Street in Jamestown. “I liked the location and the large airy space with room for several stylists to work,” she said in 2013 during an interview for the celebration of two decades at her Jamestown location. “I have the best

To give back to someone who has given so often to others, the community is invited to attend the Ruth Kiger Benefit (hot dog, bake and yard sale) July 30 at Groometown Baptist Church.

Shopping with your children By LEANNE ELY Dinner Diva

Do you grab your purse and duck out the door the minute you know your kids are looked after so you can shop for groceries alone? While it’s a nice treat to do the food shopping by yourself from time to time, I think that it’s very important to bring the children along with you whenever you can. Shopping for food is a crucial life skill, and the best way for them to learn how to select produce and to spot the best deals is for you to actually show them. If you’re worried about your little ones asking for treats and misbehaving in the store, just remember that teaching them how to act in public and how to respond to hearing the word “no” are important life skills also. It might not be easy the first time or the third time, but you’ll get there. Now back to the shopping. The first thing to remember is that you should always stick to the perimeter of the store. Why? Well, if you stick to the outside of the store,

where the fresh produce, meat and dairy are, you shouldn’t have any trouble with your kids begging for unhealthy treats. It also helps to ensure you’re not making unhealthy choices yourself. Here are some other shopping with kids tips for you: Go to the market. Even better than sticking to the perimeter of the grocery store? Start out at the local farmers’ market so your kids can meet the people who grow the food you’ll be eating that week. Encourage them to ask the farmers questions and to really connect with the food items they encounter. Let the kids choose. Try to be flexible with your grocery list and let the kids make some of those important shopping decisions. For instance, tell them you need three green vegetables, two orange vegetables and a fruit in every other color of the rainbow. Go with the items they choose even if you foresee a disaster. The only catch should be that they’ll have to eat the foods they choose when you serve them. Talk to them. Explain

how you know if one pear is ripe and one isn’t. Teach them how to look for the perfect bunch of bananas. Tell them why you choose the organic kale over the other kale. Talk about the prices of items and how to tell which protein is the best deal. Reward good behavior. When time comes to pay for your groceries, if your child or children have not given you any grief during the shopping adventure, tell them how proud you are of the way they behaved. Consider rewarding that good behavior if it’s something you’ve been working towards. Depending on the age and interest of your children, some ideas might be a new book, an hour at the park, a toy car or some crayons or stickers. New students to get warm welcome at GTCC By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer New students at Guilford Technical Community College will receive an especially warm welcome when classes resume in August. Week of Welcome is an innovative new program designed to better engage students and to help them acclimate to college life. The week begins Aug. 9 and ends Aug. 15, when fall classes start, with most activities occurring on Thursday, Aug. 11. “(On Aug. 11 of Week of Welcome) we are having some purposeful activities for our new students,” said Susan English, director of instructional support and special projects at GTCC.

“We are providing some specific activities that expose them to some of the necessities of college. “In some cases we are having sessions, like how to do the library and how to do tutoring. Other opportunities will be in a fair kind of setting where we will have food, student ambassadors doing tours, and tables where people can share about clubs. We also are having an open house, or

a mixer, where students can meet and greet faculty without being in the classroom.” Like many community colleges, GTCC traditionally has held registration up to the day before class starts. “You’ve got people coming in, thousands of them actually, the last five days of registration,” said Kirby Moore, GTCC registrar. “Then they are going right into school with no opportunity to take a breath, to get their books or to meet their faculty. By ending registration a week before classes start, we open up opportunities for students and our departments to prepare.” At four-year colleges and universities, the week prior to beginning class is an inviting and exciting time for students. There is a

wide range of activities in which students can participate, such as parties, live music and other performances, sports challenges, stunts and open-air markets. It is that type of energy GTCC wants to cultivate during Week of Welcome. “It gives us a little bit of breathing time to not only welcome students with energy and passion, but also to provide some specific interventions that we hope will improve their success,” said English. Moore added many late-registering students had been identified as high risk. They also received the least amount of attention because of time constraints on faculty and staff. He said data shows the more students engage with faculty outside the class-

Rotarians honored for continued achievement Jon Spillman of Jamestown, Rotary District Governor for District 7690 for 2016-17, recently honored two Jamestown Rotarians for their service to Rotary and the Jamestown Community at the Jamestown club’s July 12 meeting at the Ragsdale Civic Center. Tom Allred, was recognized as a Rising Star. The District Governor awards The Rising Star to someone who is newer in the club who has taken on club duties and responsibilities and become heavily engaged in the club activities. This Rotarian demonstrates accomplishments and is growing in their Rotary experience. Martin Senell was recognized as a Shining Star in the Rotary Club. The Shining Star represents a more experienced Rotarian who has consistently taken on duties and responsibilities and continues to demonstrate “Doing Good in the World,” Rotary leadership and involvement through the years.

Rotary District 7690 covers 15 counties and has 49 clubs serving their local communities, as well as supporting numerous international projects. Rotary’s number one goal is to eradicate polio throughout the world and according to the group’s slogan, is “this close” to completing the task.

room, the more likely they are to be retained. Week of Welcome, therefore, provides more opportunities for that engagement. GTCC also envisions this as an opportunity to welcome back faculty and staff. Although this is new to the school, English believes it will be successful and hopes to expand it for future semesters. “We want people to take advantage of this as they feel comfortable,” said English. “I think we are going to see folks embrace this opportunity and be appreciative. “We are very, very excited about it.” Jane E. As I See It

“For I know the thoughts I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” (Jeremiah 29:11) If God has peaceful thoughts for us, why is there so much hurt and heartbreak in this world? The world, even our personal lives, are so full of people who love wielding power and control over us (sometimes just because they can). Is this contrary to what the Bible teaches? Not really. Our Creator gave us a free will that leads us to exerting our independence. Forced love is not love so He gave us the will to love or not. And bad things happen because we make the wrong choices. When we try to “do” everything right, we are conscientious people, and things still seem to go wrong. What then? Does our faith waver? Sometimes. Why? Because we do not REALLY trust God to look after us (even though we may say we do and even want to). Someone said “God’s timing is always right. Wait patiently for Him.” Have you ever had something happen that seemed utterly ridiculous or even very hurtful and you couldn’t see how anything good could possibly come from it? Maybe even years later, you looked back and found yourself saying “I never would have imagined how well that would work out.” God’s timing. Most of us just don’t know how to “live loved.” On the human level, we feel we have to earn or deserve true love. But, with God, He loves us no matter what. Yes, bad things happen. Things we often have no excuse or explanation for. But, never doubt that your Father loves you. Whatever happens, He will never, even for a minute, leave you. We can’t always feel His presence, but that doesn’t mean He isn’t there. “….and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:20b) Is something happening in your life that makes you feel like it is the end of your world? Trust Jesus. He knows that feeling and totally understands.

Scott named scholar athlete of the year for Allen Jay Middle

Win Scott, 13, of Jamestown, received the male scholar athlete of the year award for Allen Jay Middle School in High Point last month. Allen Jay is a 200-day-a-year leadership-based magnet school in the Guilford County Public School System that just finished its first year of competing in athletics as a 5th through 8th grade middle school. Scott, a 7th-grader, was the only student who played on every team the school offered to male students, starting for the soccer, volleyball, basketball, track and baseball teams. He also maintained a straight-A grade average the entire year and did not miss a day of the 200-day school year. Some highlights of his athletic season were scoring a hat trick in a soccer game; sinking four game clenching free throws with 19 seconds remaining to lead the basketball team to their first ever basketball win; pitching the first five innings and

catching the final two innings of a onehit victory over Eastern Guilford Middle School in which he also stole home for the game winning run; and winning three of his four one-mile races including a season best time of 5 min. 24 sec. while also competing and winning most of his long jump and half mile competitions at each meet. An academic highlight, along with maintaining straight A’s, was being chosen with three fellow students to greet, guide and sit in on meetings with Gov. Pat McCrory as he visited Allen Jay in February. While this was the school’s first year of athletics as a new 5th through 8th grade middle school, Allen Jay has been around since 1928 and in 1964 it became the first place that Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Kay Yow coached while teaching high school English. Scott’s grandmother, Ruth Scott of Jamestown, taught at Allen Jay in the 1950s.

Caddies offer more than clubs to golfers By CAROL BROOKS Staff Writer Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone with you all the time, giving advice and carrying your load no matter what the situation? Some lucky people have such a person. Many golfers know the experience. Golf caddies. You’ve seen them crouching down to read a putt, showing the line of a drive, checking the wind, cleaning clubs, lugging golf bags that could weigh up to 50 pounds around five miles of golf course each day and holding umbrellas over their bosses to stay dry. PGA and LPGA golfers are professionals who know their sport well enough to play without help. But it’s always good to have an oncourse coach, buddy and sometimes shrink handy to back up your course of action or to put your mind back on the job at hand. The old caddie rule of “show up, shut up and keep up” does not hold true these days.

“A good caddie is more than a mere assistant,” said famed British golf writer Henry Longhurst. “He is a guide, philosopher and friend.” Maybe not always a friend. “Sometimes I just want to punch him,” said Bubba Watson’s caddie Ted Scott in a 2011 interview with CNN, “but I love him. And I know he feels the same about me. But don’t let anybody else say anything bad about us. We’ll go into battle for each other. “It takes a long time to learn someone and that’s the art of caddieing – you have to learn your player.” “Good caddies are worth their weight in gold sometimes,” said PGA pro Lee Westwood several years ago. Often golfers themselves, caddies can be seen during practice rounds pacing off yardage and rolling balls on the greens to projected pin placements, all to get a lay of the land and give their boss every advantage. Caddies are aware of weather conditions, local rules

and often have to call down unruly spectators. Anyone following the LPGA will see a little more caddie involvement. Most of the women have their caddies line up behind them on each shot, including the putt, to make certain their alignment is correct. This has caused some controversy among LPGA members, but it is perfectly legal according to the Rules of Golf. However, a player will be assessed a two-stroke penalty if the caddie does not move out of the line of play before the player begins the shot. Players are also penalized if the caddie breaches any other rule of golf. Some caddies have become famous in their own right, usually for the player they work for: Steve Williams (Tiger Woods/ Adam Scott), Fluff Cowan (Woods/Jim Furyk), Jim Mackay (Phil Mickelson), Joe LaCava (Fred Couples/ Dustin Johnson/Woods), Paul Tesori (Webb Simpson), Bruce Edwards (Tom Watson), Squeaky Medlin (Nick Price/John Daly) and Fanny Sunesson (Nick Faldo) are just a few household names. Mackay has been on Phil Mickelson’s bag since 1992 when Mickelson turned pro. Announcers at last week’s Open Championship mentioned several times that several times “Bones” Mackay had talked his boss into a different club off the tee. Always urging his player on, Mackay fell to the ground when Mickelson missed a putt on the final hole on the opening day that would have been the lowest round ever in a major cham-

pionship. Some golfers employ a family member on their bag. Patrick Reed won the 2013 Wyndham Championship over Jordan Spieth with his wife Justine carrying his bag. Justine jumped into his arms after his first win and planted a kiss on his lips, something not seen with most other professional/ caddie duos. Caddies on the PGA tour earn a base salary between $1,000 and $2,000 each week. In addition, they receive a bonus of up to 10 percent of their player’s winnings. Local caddies at the country club or municipal course, however, make considerably less. The average weekend 30-handicap duffer usually doesn’t have the advantage of a caddie and must haul his own clubs around and rely on his own wits. If you play some courses in Pinehurst and other wellknown locales, however, you are required to use a caddie. The local caddies are familiar with the course, which can be helpful to golfers who don’t play the course regularly. It’s been said that local caddies could save you 10 strokes during a round with their knowledge. Even though having a trusted caddie by your side is advantageous, sometimes you just have to make your own decisions. Sergio Garcia used a local caddie in 2012, the year he won the Wyndham Championship. He told the Associated Press, “He’s not a professional caddie, but I don’t feel like I need that at the moment.”

Yes, you can

When the temperatures climb, it’s natural to reach for a refreshing drink to cool down. However, many of the places you’d most enjoy a sip of wine or a spritzer – such as pools, beaches and parks – are locations where wine glasses and bottles aren’t usually welcome. That’s why cans are a growing trend among some of your favorite summertime beverages, which make it easy to enjoy a drink when and where you want, giving any moment a touch of summer. After all, sleek, lightweight singleserve cans are easy to carry and pack in coolers, beach bags and tubs of ice. Look for options such as Barefoot Refresh Spritzers, which are flavorful, light and lively beverages with a signature spritz. Two refreshing flavors – Crisp White and Summer Red – are delicious straight from a chilled can, poured over ice or mixed in a cocktail.

If you’re limited to a smaller backyard or picnic table, activities such as bean bag toss, board games or cards are sure to help set a fun mood. • Bluetooth speaker.
