Crimes dip in 2018 By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Lt. T.P. Popek of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office gave an annual report of crime in Jamestown at the February Town Council meeting. There were 57 Part One crimes (murder and nonnegligent homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny/theft and arson) reported in 2017,

including 43 larcenies and five burglaries. There were also four motor vehicle thefts, and two robberies. The figures indicate a decrease of 12 total crimes from the previous year.

“Most crime is along Main Street,” Popek said. Dollar General on West Main Street continues to be the target of much of the shoplifting crimes with 17 reported incidents. Topping the list were 66 reports from the Ragsdale High School area. November was the busiest month for the department in Jamestown with nine Part One crimes committed, seven of those being larcenies. Since 2013, Part One

crimes have averaged about 62 each year. Not only was there an overall decrease in Part One crimes in 2018, but there was also a decrease of 68 percent in burglaries and 40 percent in aggravated assault, for a total decrease in crime of 16 percent. The Jamestown division of the Guilford County Sheriff’s office is led by Capt. D.R. Pruitt, Lt. T.P. Popek and Detective Sgt. C.A. Rogers. There are also 36 other personnel.

Jamestown Rotary Club honors parade volunteers By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Christmas 2018 may be past, but it has not been forgotten. At least it was on the minds of Jamestown Rotary Club members as they gathered for a meal Jan. 22 to celebrate last year’s Christmas parade and recognize the volunteers who helped make it a success. “The Rotary Club has sponsored the Christmas parade for at least the past 20 years,” said Cliff Paddock, club president. “The town has always been a big help to us and for the past two years we have been assisted by members of the Ragsdale YMCA and Jamestown Business Association.” Kevin Bottomley, executive director of the Ragsdale Y, introduced volunteers from his organization. Jamestown Mayor Lynn Montgomery introduced town officials and staff, and Stevra Hudson, JBA president, acknowledged its members. She also presented plaques from the JBA to Mitchell’s Grove United Methodist Church for the best-decorated parade see rotary, page 2

Fire department calls increased in 2017-18 By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department’s Assistant Chief Tommy Cole, presented the yearly report at the Jamestown Town Council Meeting on Jan. 15. “PSFD responded to 3,396 calls last year (July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018),” said Cole. That figure reflected an increase of 336 from the previous year. Of that number, 1,975 were medical incidents, 281 were firerelated, 303 were motor vehicle accidents and 607 were service or good intent incidents. The Jamestown station, #46, where Cole is stationed, is staffed by two full-time personnel, a training officer and two shift firefighters. It continues to be the second-busiest station within the PinecroftSedgefield Fire Department, behind Mackay Road, with 741 calls in

2017-18, an increase of 34 calls. Of those calls, the 509 medical incidents greatly outnumbered any other calls, typical of most departments, but accounting for 70 percent in Jamestown. Many of those calls were to Shannon Gray Rehabilitation and Recovery Center. Fire-related incidents for Jamestown were 39, motor vehicle accidents 26 and service/good intent incidents were 91. There were also 77 fire alarm events. Responding to calls is not the only duty of the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department. Fire prevention and education is important. The department held 337 programs in their district, attended by 131,748 children and adults. Of that number, 22,309 attended the 41 programs in Jamestown. Firefighters are consee fire, page 2

Box puppet “play” in 3 easy steps By donna erickson donna’s day: creative family fun Turn a dreary winter’s day into a “play day” filled with whimsical box puppets your family can make in three easy steps. Pick characters from a favorite book and retell a story “puppet show” style. Or mix and match characters from several books. You might even create some puppets that look like family members for an even livelier troupe. Use extra props and make funny voices and sound effects for a memorable performance. Before you begin making your puppets, collect a few empty food boxes, such as single-portion cereal boxes, which are quite easy for younger children to manipulate. As your cast of puppet characters grows, it’s definitely fun to use boxes in a range of shapes and sizes.

Here’s what you’ll need: — 1 single-portion cerealbox, paper lining removed and open end glued shut. (For a larger puppet, use a standard-size cereal box.) — Poster paint and brushes — Markers — Construction paper — Glue and scissors — Odd and ends, such as felt, ping-pong balls, cotton balls and yarn for beards and hair Here’s the fun: With the front of the box facing you, draw a horizontal line around the middle of the box. An adult should cut along the line on the front and two narrow sides of the box. Do not cut the line on the back of the box. Instead, make a fold on that line so you can bend back the two connected halves of the box. Insert your fingers and thumb in the openings to test moving the “mouth” of the puppet.

Paint the outside of the box or cover it with construction paper. If you are making safari-style puppets, you might want to use adhesive-backed paper in tiger, lion or zebra prints. Add craft supplies to represent the appearance of a book character or person in your family or neighborhood. Glue on ping-pong balls or plastic milk-jug lids for eyes. Make a dot in the center of each one with a marker. Add yarn or cotton balls for hair, and felt or craft foam for ears. Don’t forget to make

a tongue and glue it inside where the box opens and closes. Draw teeth or lips on the outside of the box. Add other details to create a distinct personality. Jamestown, North Carolina By linda willard JAMESTOWN friends meeting Have you ever wondered how Jamestown, North Carolina got its name? Did we borrow the name from Jamestown, Virginia? Did someone named James decide that the town should be named for him? Unlike Jamestown, Virginia, Jamestown, North Carolina is a vibrant, thriving, and growing community. By the 1700s, Pennsylvania Quakers were moving into the area in search of better land for farming. One of the first Quakers to settle in present-day Jamestown, North Carolina was James Mendenhall. In 1775, James Mendenhall moved to Georgia. His son, James remained in the area and established the village of Jamestown named in honor of his father. By the late 1700s, Jamestown had several brick buildings that faced the road that ran through the village. This made Jamestown

the first place in Guilford County, North Carolina to look like a town. In the late 1790s, Jamestown was a designated polling place. In 1812 Jamestown was granted a state charter. The Mendenhall family established the first grist mill and lumber mills. When the water level in the Deep River is low, you can still see the remains of the Mendenhall mill. Much of the land that was the original Mendenhall farm is now located in the High Point City Lake Park. During the American Revolution, British army troops under the command of General Cornwallis camped near present-day Jamestown. Some say that the camp site was actually on the grounds of Deep River Friends Meeting. Troops under Cornwallis foraged from local farms for provision prior to their encounter with General Nathaniel Greene at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. In 1811, Richard Mendenhall,

the son of James Mendenhall, built what is now the historic Mendenhall Plantation. Richard Mendenhall was a tanner and business man. If you tour the Mendenhall Plantation, you will see where Richard did much of his tanning. The building across the street from the Mendenhall Plantation was used as a store by Richard Mendenhall. Jamestown is also known for the Jamestown Rifle. The Jamestown Rifle, a muzzle loading gun, was manufactured in Jamestown and was prized for its accuracy. There are forty-one places in the world named Jamestown. Thirty of those places are in the United States. The other eleven are in Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Saint Helena, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia. As far as I can determine, Jamestown, North Carolina is the only one named for a member of the Mendenhall family. Most if not all of the others are names for King James.

There will be popup bargains each day and on Saturday the cost will decrease to $5 for a brown paper bag filled with books. “One way or another we want to find homes for a lot of good books,” Naples said. “It is a win-win situation.” “We hope people will come back to use the library and return to the book sale next year,” Ebel said. Ebel was instrumental in starting the library’s special book sale last year. It was held in the Swedish classroom. She and other core volunteers visited various mega book sales, gleaning ideas on how books were displayed and sales conducted. “We have expanded on their ideas and made the sale our own,” Naples said. “We are trying to make it easy for people to select their books and shop.”

Sponsors are being sought to help make the sale a success. They will be acknowledged in the library newsletter, on fliers given at the book sale check out and on Facebook. Names also will be prominently displayed during the sale and at the library checkout desk for one month after. Donations for the sale may be dropped off at the library until Feb. 15. Volunteers are still needed to help sort books, conduct the sales and restock tables as books are sold. Funds from the sale and sponsorships will be used to enhance the library’s selection of books, as well as DVDs and audio books. Friends of the Library core booksale volunteers are excited to see the sale grow from a notion to a reality and plan to make the sale an annual event. “We want to build a brand that will be (recognized) every year,” Naples said.

He is like a drill sergeant on parade day, making sure everything fits together.” On behalf of the club, Paddock presented Senell with a gift of appreciation. Senell, in turn, credited Leigh Ann Gray, his office assistant when he began working with the parade, with coordinating all the parade entries at that time. Montgomery shared in detail a story about a small child lost along Ragsdale Road and how members of the community pulled together to assure the child was safely returned to his father. People helping people is what makes Jamestown special, she acknowledged. Other guests for the evening included Dave McCoy, past district governor, and Claudia Cannady, Rotary

Cole listed several department accomplishments for the time period: replacement of self-contained breathing apparatus, replacement of a 1992 engine with a 2018 engine, replacement of a 1998 tanker with a 2018 tanker, installation of new staffing software, and completion of an insurance inspection resulting in a class rating of 2 in Jamestown and 3 in the rest or the department, which covers rural areas. The lower the rating is, the better. Very few fire departments in the state have the Class 2 rating. “We are very proud of these ratings,” Cole said. “Everybody who lives in our fire district in Jamestown should be very excited.” According to the PSFD website, “In the fall of 1951 there were several bad house fires in the Pinecroft-Sedgefield vicinity. Several residents of the area decided to call a meeting at the Guilford Courthouse to organize a fire department. Robert Neely, a lawyer and resident of the district, made the application for incorporation. A meeting was held in his office on March 28, 1952. The district was estab-

Rotary International has partnered with other organizations to eradicate polio around the world, Cannady noted. “I originally joined Rotary thinking I could get business referrals,” she said. “But I stayed because of the people I met. Rotary is not a service organization. It is friends getting together to have a good time and help others. Helping others gives us satisfaction.” District 7690 is comprised of 49 clubs. But it is also included in a network of clubs around the world. “In Rotary, you will be welcomed with opened arms and friendship anywhere you go,” Cannady said. “2018 was a good year for us,” Geoff Swan, president elect of the Jamestown Rotary, said as the meeting concluded. “We hope to repeat the performance next year.”

lished on a membership basis. A few months later, the Board of Directors authorized the purchase of a new pumper that pumped 500 gallons of water per minute. The new pumper was put into service on Jan. 28, 1953. The truck was housed in the rear of the Gate City Truck Stop on High Point Road, which was leased for $1 per year from Frank Joyce. The department was originally on a subscription basis, with each property owner paying ten cents on one hundred dollar evaluation. In 1956, the tax district was established.” The Jamestown and Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Departments merged in 2003. It currently is made up of 47 career firefighters, 30 volunteer firefighters, a Ladies’ Auxiliary and other support personnel. Cole regrets that the number of both career and volunteer firefighters goes down every year. “It’s a sign of the times,” he said. Many of the resident firefighters who live at each station in 24-hour shifts are students in GTCC’s fire academy. “We offer this program to get them in the door and hopefully retain them as volunteers and eventually hire them as career staff,” Cole said. The department operates six engines, two tankers, one heavy rescue, one fire and rescue boat and a brush truck, among other vehicles. The Jamestown station houses three engines and a Guilford County Emergency Services vehicle. The total operating budget for PSFD for fiscal year 2017-18 is $3.95 million, with $527,000 supplied by the Town of Jamestown. PSFD covers approximately 52 square miles, stretching – and covering in part – Greensboro, High Point, Pleasant Garden and Randleman. It also services the Randleman Lake area. Interstate 85 accounts for most of the vehicle calls.

The Tuscarora War’s dirty secret There is a secret about North Carolina’s early colonial days, something even more disturbing and horrifying than traditional slavery. I learned about it reading UNCWilmington profesBy d.g. martin sor David La Vere’s One on one “The Tuscarora War: Indians, Settlers, and the Fight for the Carolina Colo- olina was sparsely settled, mainly nies.” That book interested me by Virginians moving south onto because I want to learn more about the lands around the Albemarle the 18th-century explorer, John Sound. Proprietors in England to transport groups of poor German refugees and Swiss paupers to lands along the Neuse River near today’s New Bern. La Vere writes that after overcoming great odds, “De Graffenried’s colony of Swiss and German Palatines at the mouth of the Neuse River was thriving, expansion up the Neuse seemed a real possibility.” Therefore, Lawson and Graffenried made a trip up the Neuse, through Tuscarora lands to scout sites for future settlements. “All the while, the Indians grew more worried and angry as the abuses against them escalated and their complaints fell on deaf ears. That spark came in mid-Septem-

ber 1711,” according to La Vere, with this trip up the Neuse. The local Tuscarora king or chief, offended and threatened that his territory had been invaded, captured Lawson and Graffenried and put them on trial for their lives. When one of the more radical Indian leaders berated him, Lawson lost his temper. “He argued back, his anger and sarcasm apparent to all.” Lawson was doomed and shortly executed. Graffenried remained in custody while the Indians planned and carried out their first attacks on September 22, 1711, appearing at first as friendly visitors to the settlers’ farms and then striking suddenly from ambush when the defenses were down. North Carolina’s efforts to beat back the Tuscaroras were unsuccessful. The colony had not enough manpower, firepower, or money. Help finally came from the wealthy sister colony to the south. South Carolina sent two expeditions to relieve its northern neighbor. Hold on, we are close to the dark secret. The first expedition led by John Barnwell set out with a force of about 700 men. Only 35 were reg-

ular militia. The rest were Indians. The results were mixed, and the Tuscaroras remained a threat. The second expedition led by James Moore, made up of 113 militia and 760 Indians, wiped out the Tuscarora at their stronghold at Neoheroka, near present day Snow Hill in Greene County, and unplugged the Tuscarora “cork” on settlement in the interior of North Carolina. Why did South Carolina so enthusiastically aid its neighbor? Why did South Carolina Indians provide the critical manpower? Writes La Vere, “Above all, it was a chance to enrich oneself by looting the Tuscarora towns and taking slaves, which they could sell to waiting South Carolina traders for guns and merchandise.” North Carolina’s early colonists secured their colony by facilitating and participating in the enslavement and sale of captured Tuscaroras by South Carolina Indians. That is history’s dirty secret.

Get over it — Trump’s not going anywhere By Rich lowry The walls supposedly are always closing in on Donald Trump. The end is always beginning. He’s going to quit. He’s going to be impeached and removed. He’s going to decide not to run again. Somehow or other, he’s going to relieve everyone of the responsibility of ever thinking of him again, and especially of the responsibility of defeating him in an election. Such scenarios are a constant topic in private conversations. The allure is obvious. It is the promise of deliverance. After tormenting his enemies for so long, Trump’s going to make it easy for them. He’s just going to go away. It is true that the odds of Trump somehow not serving out his term are, given his erratic personality and the wild card of the Mueller investigation, higher than those for a normal president serving in normal times. But they are still slim. Perhaps special counsel Robert Mueller’s report will send a torpedo into Trump’s bow. It seems more likely that a report will contain damaging and embarrassing revelations that, whatever the initial shock, will be quickly absorbed by the political system and especially Trump’s supporters. The velocity of the news cycle, driven in part by the sheer volume and pace of Trump controversies, works in his favor. The resignation of Jim Mattis rocked Trump’s administration to the core — for all of about 36 hours. And does anyone remember the revelation that talks over a Trump Tower project in Moscow went on longer than first realized? Probably not. Why would Trump ever quit? This is a man who has fought and clawed for every ounce of public attention — good or bad — he can get throughout his adult life, and

now, occupying the biggest bully pulpit on the planet, he’s just going to walk away? Despite media reports that Trump is perpetually furious and feeling besieged, he has never shown the slightest brittleness or sense of being overwhelmed in public. He’s always his same ebullient, combative, outrageous self. He’s the least likely president to get worn down by an impeachment fight. What would discourage or deflate the normal human energizes him. The same applies even more to his running for re-election. After enduring several years of having to govern, not his natural aptitude, why would he throw away the opportunity to campaign, which he clearly relishes? Because he’d be convinced he’d lose? Short of a Mueller catastrophe, this doesn’t seem very likely. Remember: All sorts of people tried to convince him he’d lose last time, and they were all wrong. Having won the presidency once polling at a little over 40 percent in the RealClearPolitics average, he’d surely figure that he could do it again. For any president, winning a second term is the highest validation. Trump, so sensitive to status, must feel this imperative more than most. Besides all this, no one should really hope for a premature end to the Trump presidency. Whatever the circumstances, it’d be a trauma to the republic and not accepted by a significant plurality of the electorate. The wish fulfillment of Trump’s critics is better directed toward the less spectacular, yet difficult-enough task of beating him in 2020. Delightful and fanciful but moderately hard to follow, the whole thing is

a little too over-the-top, including Keira Knightly as an aggressively flighty Sugar Plum Fairy. But we loved relative unknown Jayden Fowora-Knight as the steadfast Nutcracker soldier Phillip. “Boy Erased” (R) — Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe play small-town, religious parents whose world is rocked by the admission that their seemingly normal son (Lucas Hedges) is gay. The preacher and his wife send the boy to a Christian conversion camp, where he is to be reprogrammed out of his wayward feel-

Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy in “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” ings. It’s tragically hard to be a loving parent whose values are at odds with your child’s sexuality. It’s tragically hard to be happy and well-adjusted at the expense of being yourself.

This film recognizes those realities while exposing the shameful practices and futility of so-called conversion programs. Based on the autobiographical account of Garrard Conley. “Hunter Killer” (R) — When a U.S. submarine goes missing in icy waters off Russia, intel determines that a coup d’etat is developing and a super-sinister rogue minister is looking

to cause World War III. Sub commander Joe Glass (Gerard Butler) is called upon to check it out — because he’s not like those other by-the-book captains, obviously — while the Navy Seals go in to rescue the kidnapped Russian president. Glass brings his special brand of rulebreaking disaster management, enlisting the help of a salty Russian commander (the late Michael Nyqvist). “The Hunt for Red October,” it’s not. So batten down the hatches, because this cheese-action flick has no chill at all. “Suspiria” (R) — Talented, ambitious American dancer Susie (Dakota Johnson) is accepted into a renowned German dance company, whose artistic director (Tilda Swinton) runs a decidedly immer-

sive program. Another student, Patricia (Chloe Grace Moretz), goes missing after outing the dance company to her therapist as a coven of witches. Susie climbs the ranks, while violence and mayhem surround the ritualistic actions of the dance company. Swinton plays three parts in this film and one is an older German male psychotherapist. I still can’t tell if it’s supposed to be obvious that it’s her under all that latex. That about sums up how I feel about this art-house horror. Healthy Living

Is big and tall patient getting petite-size meds? being much larger than average, your blood volume is probably only a little above the average, since the increased bone mass, muscle mass and, in most people your size, fat mass are disproportionate to the blood. Some medicines go to the blood, others to “lean body mass” and still others preferentially to fat. So while you are correct that you are getting a smaller concentration of medicine, that’s still OK most of the time. For medications that need to be dosed precisely, those with a narrow toxic to therapeutic ratio (such as some antibiotics, heart medication and chemotherapy), the dosing is based on height, weight, age and sometimes kidney and liver function.

never had any problems with their Pap smears by age 65 are very unlikely to ever develop any, and I agree with the recommendation by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to stop them at age 65. Mammograms are more controversial, but my personal practice is to continue to recommend them for most women until about age 75. I stop recommending mammograms to women when they have an underlying medical condition that makes it unlikely that they will receive benefit from continued screening. Deciding when that is takes some experience and a lot of discussion with the patient and sometimes her family. There is no absolute age cutoff for mammograms, and getting a mammogram on a healthy 80-year-old might make sense. Getting a mammogram on DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years a woman with incurable lung cancer, for old, in good health with no cancer in the example, does not. family. Up to now, I have always had regular Pap smears and mammograms. Now I Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer am aware that there are different thoughts individual letters, but will incorporate them in the as to whether those tests are needed at my column whenever possible. Readers may email age. What is your advice? — J.G. questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.

By keith roach, M.D. to your good health DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71 years old, stand 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weigh 325 pounds. The “average” person is half my size, yet when I get medication for various ailments (e.g., gout, pain, flu shots, etc.) I get the standard dose. I assume I have more physical mass as well as a larger blood supply, which leads me to the conclusion that I am receiving a smaller concentration of medicine than the typical patient. Am I correct? — M.K. DEAR M.K.: All medicines have concentrations at which they work optimally. Too low a dose and they aren’t effective, and too high a dose increases risk of toxicity. Some drugs have a very small range that’s both effective and nontoxic, and these are referred to as having a “narrow toxic to therapeutic ratio.” Others have a very large range where they are effective and nontoxic, such as most over-thecounter pain medicines and flu shots. Penicillin has a very wide toxic to therapeutic ratio, but I use that example

precisely because some people will have an allergic reaction. There is no drug — prescribed, over-the-counter or supplement — that is either perfectly safe while being effective, or perfectly effective while being safe, for every person. The concentration of the drug in the appropriate area of the body (sometimes blood, sometimes the affected organ, sometimes urine) may depend on the dose DEAR J.G.: For Pap smears, there is as well as your characteristics.
