Johnson property major 2021 discussion Of all the items to come before the Jamestown Town Council in 2021, the fate of the former Johnson Farm property along the corner of Guilford College and Mackay roads was undoubtedly the most controversial — and has yet to be resolved after nearly two years. To recap, Diamondback Investment Group announced plans for the property on Feb. 12, 2020, at two neighborhood meetings at GTCC. The development would
hinge on whether the Jamestown Town Council approved Planned Use Development (PUD) zoning, which it did in June of that year. The Facebook group Jamestown United was formed in February 2020 to discuss concerns about the potential development of the Johnson property. Organizers printed yard signs saying “Keep Jamestown Jamestown” and even had T-shirts made. Members of the group continues to watch for what they believe are irregularities in the handling of the property and to keep Jamestown’s small-town feel. The Planning Board held seven
meetings over several months to discuss Diamondback’s plans in detail before denying the rezoning request in November 2020. The Jamestown Town Council followed suit in February of 2021 by denying the rezoning. The Council believed the plan was inconsistent with the Comprehensive plan for several reasons. Diamondback pulled its annexation request as a result. But the matter did not stop there. According to the Guilford County Information Service, Diamondback had not actually owned the property when it requested
rezoning but purchased the properties at 2207 and 2221 Guilford College Road and 5300 and 5303 Mackay Road from the Johnson family for $14.5 million on June 30, 2021. That same day, the company turned around and sold the property to developer D.R. Horton for a reported $18 million. Knowing development on the property was inevitable, and noting the need for professional help to determine the future of this 466.7-acre property, the Town appointed Tom Terrell as land use attorney in August 2021. “It is uncommon than any town anywhere has a tract of land
Stories worth remembering By nORMa B. dennIs FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Good things about good people would pretty much describe the stories I write for the Jamestown News, and each person or group I interview has impacted me in some way. So trying to select stories from 2021 to highlight was a daunting task. Here are a few I have chosen. • Dianne Keene is owner of Sophisticuts Salon in Jamestown. But her love of God and mission work also lead her to become executive director of operations on an all-volunteer board of directors in America, which serves Mercy and Grace Ministries in Honduras. The mission of Mercy and Grace is to reach people for Christ while meeting the needs of the poor. Each year, the ministry facilitates between 20-25 mission teams to Honduras. Since it started, Mercy and Grace has installed about 20 community water filtration systems and thousands of bucket purification systems in individual homes. It has also participated in feeding programs; ministering in hospitals and medical clinics; sponsoring youth, pastor and marriage conferences; conducting Christian concerts, Vacation Bible Schools and tent revivals; and handling construction projects, school assemblies and evangelism of all types. • When Covid kept the handbell choirs at Jamestown United Methodist Church from performing their Christmas concerts in person, director Evan Petty and associate pastor Erin Betleg decided a video recording could be the solution. This proved more challenging than first imagined, however. Trial and error revealed that sounds from the lights in the room, traffic outside, whistles from passing trains and even the recording equipment interfered with the melodious sounds of the bells. Every tiny sound was magnified. The solution was a darkened room with the equipment placed outside it. All that was inside the room was one stereo microphone. Petty led the musicians using a glow stick so they could see his directions. Although making the videos was time consuming, sharing the music in an online format was inspiring. Petty has considered doing videos in the future to complement the bell ringers’ in-person performances. • For the less sports minded, reading the story of Mark Winfield Scott pitching a perfect game was a good opportunity to expand their knowledge. Not to be confused with a nohitter, where the opposing team gets no hits, a perfect game means no one on the other team gets on base at all. There are no hits, no walks, no one hit by a pitch and no errors. Perfect games are rare. Only 23 perfect games have occurred in Major League baseball history out
this large and this central and an opportunity to decide what it’s going to be,” Terrell said at the time. “You cannot afford to get this wrong. It will change the character, the functionality of this town forever.” He said the roll of the Planning Board was not to design a site and not to step into the role of developer. By statute, the board’s roll is to look at the town’s Comprehensive Plan and to determine whether of not a plan agrees generally, not 100 percent, with the town’s vision for its future. see jOHnsOn, PAGe 2

of almost a quarter million played. Scott’s was the 59th perfect game in NCHSAA history and the first seven-inning perfect game in Guilford County. But Scott refused to take all the credit for his accomplishment. He credited his catcher Sam Ross with giving him confidence to throw the pitch calls of Coach Donnie Maness and Pitching Coach Chris Perry. He also acknowledged his teammates for getting the hits needed to seal the win against a competitive team that had five players signed to play college baseball. Scott has been recruited to play baseball for North Carolina State University. • Scouts earning a Gold Award, Girl Scout’s highest honor, is nothing new. But for Paulette Mitchell and Melissa Wolfe, co-leaders of Ambassador Troop #40836 the excitement of seeing a member of their troop receive that award was multiplied. Their entire troop of six girls was presented the award during a special ceremony. Each Scout met the important prerequisites through organizing and implementing a Take Action project during their Cadette years, which earned them the Silver Award. They also had to complete a Leadership Journey, which opened the window to begin the Gold Award process. Gold Award recipients included Ananya Ramesh, Jade Martin, Katie Whittington, Leah Robinson, Natalie Haas and Zoe Mitchell. • Jamie Shields, a fourth grade teacher at Millis Road Elementary School wanted to give her students an opportunity to express themselves
about the changes they experienced during the upheaval of school closings. Having moved up with the class from third to fourth grade, she was with them when school closed in the spring of 2020 and when it opened in the spring of 2021. She shared with them pictures of children during the polio era listening to their lessons on the radio. Shields had students write narratives of their experiences and take pictures that represented their lives during the pandemic. The school’s art and music teachers also participated in the project. Shields gave all the project pieces to Marian Inabinett, curator of collections at the High Point Museum and she crafted them into doublesided triangle signboards featuring pull quotes, likes and dislikes, photos and self-portraits. All the students’ work premiered at the museum June 5 and was on display each Saturday during the summer. • Victoria Jones took the very real pressure of life and turned it into a career. Receiving news that she had brain cancer, which was affecting her vision, Jones refused to let the diagnosis defeat her. With encouragement from her family she returned to school after treatment to become trained in all types of massage therapy. She passed her boards on the first try and received her state license. “It was one of the proudest days of my life,” Jones said. Following in the footsteps of her parents Lovie and Mohamed Zeko who have had their own company in the food industry, Jones opened her own massage therapy business, Under Pressure Massage & Bodywork, in Jamestown. • Mosaic: A Lifespan Studio allows see ReMeMBeRIng, PAGe 2
It’s not often a resident of Jamestown is elected to a Superior Court office in Guilford County — but 2022 might be the year. LuAnn Wilkinson has filed to run for Guilford County Clerk of Superior Court. A native of Trinidad and Tobago, she has lived in the county since 1992 and Jamestown since 1999. Her family moved to the United States when she was a young child. Wilkinson, 36, received a degree in sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She began working for the court system in 2012 as a deputy clerk, working in both District and Superior courtrooms. She became assistant clerk in 2017. Perhaps ironically, Wilkinson began working under current clerk Lisa Johnson-Tonkins in 2014. Johnson-Tonkins is running to keep her position. Wilkinson left the clerk’s office in 2020 to join the public service sector. She is

In that role, I work with law enforcement, legal agencies, court personnel and Family Justice Center staff to provide wraparound services for people within our community.” Wilkinson believes her background is perfectly suited for clerk of Superior see CLeRk, PAGe 6
Cold temps put crimp on golf course revenue By CaROL BROOks FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Several days with very cold temperatures kept golfers away in November, the latest figures available. The total revenue for the Jamestown Golf Course for the month was $64,030 and operating expenditures were $102,972. This indicates a net operating loss of $38,942. There was also an operating loss in November 2020 of $37,064. The difference is due to an increase in number of employees, as well as more bad weather days (cold), leading to less play. Additionally, there were fewer rounds played in November this year compared to the same month in 2020, 1,861 rounds played compared to to 2,221 rounds. Year-to-date, rounds played are down by 3,270.

The grill had a net loss of $2,912 for November 2021 compared to $1,769 last year. Year-to-date, the grill has a net loss of $5,576 compared to a net loss of $3,288 in 2020 year-to-date. Fewer rounds played translate to fewer food and beverages purchased. Greens fees revenue this year were down approximately 9 percent in November but only down 1 percent for the fiscal year. Golf shop inventory sales were down 20 percent in November and 7 percent for the fiscal year. Overall, total golf course revenue was up less than 1 percent for the fiscal year. November food and beverage sales were down approximately $1,000 compared to the previous year. December figures from Jamestown Park operations will be presented at the Jan. 25 Town Council meeting.

continued from front “You can raise issues and make recommendations and you ought to be doing that,” Terrell advised. “Don’t confuse density with quality. They are completely unrelated.” In August the Town also appointed Seth Harry of Seth Harry and Associates, Architects and Planners, as community planner. Harry scheduled several public workshops in September, inviting developer D.R. Horton to attend. Harry took the feedback from each meeting and drew plans, renderings and models that represent those ideas. These plans were presented at the following meetings to see if what was heard was what the community wanted. These Property Visioning Workshops are available at www.you-
tube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC. In September of last year, residents learned that in March, prior to the June sale, Diamondback Investment Group had contacted the Guilford County delegation to the North Carolina General Assembly with a request to move the annexation line closer to Jamestown, making the Johnson property within Greensboro’s jurisdiction. The company presumably believed the development would have a better chance if within Greensboro. Town and Diamondback representatives attended a Zoom meeting with the Guilford delegation but the delegation did not vote. The Town never heard back on the matter. No local bill relating to the matter had
been filed with the General Assembly within the appropriate timeframe, so the property remained in Jamestown’s jurisdiction. At its Nov. 8, 2021, meeting, the Planning Board approved D.R. Horton’s request to rezone the property Planned Unit Development (PUD). The Town Council will make the final decision at a later date. As of this writing, D.R. Horton has not filed any plans with the Town of Jamestown for development of the Guilford College/Mackay road property. The company and the Town are working on a development agreement for the property, which will be presented in the near future in a public hearing.
remembering continued from front local individuals with special needs — called resident artists — to participate in craft sessions several times a week under the guidance of artists and assistants. “They come to the studio to create art projects of their choice, including such things as pottery, painting, jewelry and mosaic artwork,” said Dawn Ashby Caldwell, senior director of art and entertainment for Lifespan in Guilford County. “Participants, who range in age from about 19 to 60, can pick and choose to work on what they do best and what they most enjoy doing.” Making it is just the beginning, however. Their art is sold in a variety of venues, including gift shops and galleries in 10 area locations and at group or individual shows. The artists get 50 percent of the sales. They look forward to selling their artwork and earning their own money. It is a job for them. The Mosaic: A Lifespan Studio began seven years ago and Caldwell is excited to continue its goal of attracting more artists and helping them grow. • Since 2013, Brenda For-

lines has been helping area immigrants gain the status of American citizen. She, along with Evelyn Frost and Chuck and Ola Moy, teaches weekly citizenship classes at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church in Greensboro. During the last six years of her 30-year career with the North American Mission Board, Forlines also worked in Florida with a group of Karen People from Burma. “I fell in love with these people,” Forlines said. “After I retired and moved to High Point to be near family, I still wanted to work with them. I found out Friendly Avenue Baptist had a Karen ministry. Bryan Bresson, pastor of its Karen church, explained to Forlines the need for citizenship classes and she has worked tirelessly teaching immigrants how to successfully become naturalized citizens. The classes have had more than 80 people become U.S. citizens. • Jamestown’s original fire truck made its first official appearance in the town’s annual Christmas parade. Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department, accompanied him on the ride. Jamestown purchased the 1928 American LaFrance pumper fire truck from the city of High Point in 1948 to use in its first fire department. The truck was retired as a working engine in 1968. It saw many owners before being purchased once more by the town of Jamestown in 2017 due to its significance to the town’s history. Working within a budget for parts, Thomas, Bruce Dillon and Art Wise, with occasional help from Knight, donated countless volunteer hours to return the old engine to the look of its glory days. Now that the engine is finished and mobile, it will live at the Jamestown PinecroftSedgefield Fire Station 46, and be used in parades and for special occasions. It is interesting to see the size difference of the original fire truck compared to the town’s newest truck and to realize with gratitude the improvements in fire safety. • For Jorge Ortega, director of Guilford County Animal Services, the new Animal Resource Center on Guilford College Road is

not about looks but functionality. For that, Ortega gives it a five-star rating. The focus is on the wellbeing — mental and physical — of the animals, as well as that of the staff, volunteers and guests. “It improves animal care and housing, provides lots of natural light and reduces the spread of disease,” Ortega said. The design was a collaborative effort of consultants and staff visits to other facilities to get ideas of what works best. The new shelter includes a spay and neuter suite, surgery prep areas and an animal ICU. There are separate wings for dogs and cats with workstations throughout the building to make it easier for cleanup and care of the animals. Indoor/outdoor kennels allow dogs to go outside in gated, fenced areas, something that was not available at the old facility. Cats also have the ability to spend time outdoors. According to Ortega, all the improvements lead to happier, healthier animals, reducing their stress and making them more adoptable. He noted that the priority of the center is to provide for public health and safety. But pet adoptions play a large part of the Animal Resource Center’s programs, as well as pet education and helping to keep owners and pets together.
Area Deaths & Funerals Dale James Metz Dale James Metz, 75, passed away peacefully in Hospice Care on January 5, 2022. Dale was born in St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania, October 9, 1946. He was the son of James Edwin Metz and Beula Gustafson. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Spas Metz, daughter, Jessica Metz (Tom), son Aaron Metz, granddaughter Annalise Metz, mother Ann Black Metz, brothers Jeffrey Metz (Donalyn) and Gary Metz (Donna), nieces Brittnay Metz and Jaimie Metz, and a large extended family who will all miss him dearly. He met his wife Susan while attending SUNY Geneseo where he studied Special and Elementary Education. Shortly after graduation he joined the US Air Force where he served his country as an English language instructor for Vietnamese soldiers. After 4 years of service Dale and Sue moved to Greensboro where they would raise a family and become an exceptional part of the Piedmont Triad community. Dale was an active member of many performing arts groups including, Community Theater of Greensboro, High Point Community Theater, 5 by O’Henry Company, NC Shakespeare Company, Snow Camp Historical Drama and numerous others. Some of his favorite roles included Captain Hook, The Ghost of Christmas Present, Fagin, and The Wizard of Oz. His most cherished role, however, was always as Santa Claus for thousands of children over the years. Dale was a very civic minded man who served the community throughout his life. He was on many and varied boards of non-profit organizations that focused on the needs of underserved populations. As a teacher and principal he was a tireless advocate of education for all and used both his actions and words to bring recognition and understanding of these issues to others. During the more than 20 years he served as principal, he helped to develop Gateway Education Center into one of the premier programs for special needs children in the country. Dale and Susan were married for 53 years. They had many adventures together, performing, traveling, laughing, and raising two children, Jessica and Aaron. The addition of a beautiful granddaughter, Annalise, brought boundless joy into his life. He also loved communicating with and visiting family all around the country. He was generous and open-hearted and treated everyone he met as a friend. No one loved to laugh more than Dale. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in his name to the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Association online or Herbin-Metz Education Center PTA, 400 O’Ferrell St, Greensboro NC, 27405. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, January 16, 2022, at the Jamestown United Methodist Church, Jamestown, NC. Masks and social distancing will be required, and other Covid precautions may be in place. Online condolences can be made at www.haneslineberryfhsedgefield.com

Healthy soup makes eating vegetables easy By patti diamond divas on a dime Like most folks, I’ve resolved to eat more vegetables in the new year. Here’s an inexpensive and appetizing idea that’s been making my goal much easier. Each weekend, make one big pot of Very Versatile Vegetable Soup to enjoy for lunch the entire week. This soup is delicious, but to avoid the “soup again?” syndrome, simple additions to the basic vegetable soup totally change up the flavors so we don’t get bored. Some variation ideas follow the recipe. What makes this recipe unique is that the veggies are sauteed for a little caramelization, maximizing their natural sweetness. This adds tremendous depth of umami flavor you don’t usually find in vegetable soup. Of course, you can add any veggies you like to this soup, but I concentrated on lower-carb veggies. However, strong tasting vegetables like broccoli or asparagus tend to overpower the other flavors. This delectable recipe can be made on the stovetop or a crock

(Remember that you’re not cooking the veggies, just sauteing for the scrumptious flavor it imparts. If you get a little golden color, that’s fantastic!) 2. Add the garlic and mix it together for 1 minute. Add cabbage and stir. I add a little salt and pepper now. Cook until the cabbage begins to wilt. continued from front Court, a four-year term. “I have a thorough understanding of the importance and function of the Clerk of Superior Court office within the judicial system,” she said. “I loved the work that I did during my time there. However, I have identified areas that could benefit from a fresh perspective and new leadership, particularly accessibility to the courts, integration of technology and staff efficiency. The combination of my leadership skills and experience as an actual clerk make me an ideal candidate that can affect the necessary changes to meet the needs of our community.” Wilkinson has four goals — and one immediate goal — if elected. “My first goal is reducing the high rate of employee turnover by proactively addressing the current work culture. I want staff to feel supported and empowered so that they are committed to a mission of true public servanthood. “My second goal is to collaborate with the current supervisors to create a clear, consistent, and uniform training system. Knowledgeable, competent clerks can provide customer service that goes beyond a
warm smile — they are able to create interactions with low errors, which will create a more efficient office. “My third goal is to prepare the office for technological advancements. This spring, the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts is moving towards electronic filings. This task is no small feat, but when completed will transform our courts system as we know it. “My fourth goal is accessibility of the office. I think it is important to have policies that do not prohibit the public from accessing the judicial system. From Oct. 5, 2020, the Guilford County Clerk of Court’s office has been on a modified schedule. Even during the onset of the pandemic, the modification in hours has not aligned with that of other offices within the courthouse or continued court schedules. Shorter hours create significant challenges for not only judicial partners, but the citizens of Guilford County. “Another immediate goal is the creation of a committee to review all internal and external audits and rectify any outstanding.” The Clerk of Superior
Court is responsible for the administrative and recordkeeping functions of District and Superior Courts; collecting money that is owed to agencies, parties, or the state; is the judge of probate; and hears special proceedings such as guardianship and adoption. The elected clerk manages the staffing and support of deputy and assistant clerks to carry out these duties. “I want the citizens of Guilford County to be invested in the success of local offices such as the Clerk of Superior Court,” Wilkinson said. “A strong Clerk’s office results in stronger courts and stronger local systems create better communities.” Note: In December, the N.C. Supreme Court put candidate filings on hold in response to a lawsuit challenging the new congressional and state legislative district maps. While redistricting does not have a bearing on the clerk’s race, all primary elections have been postponed until May 17. It is not known at this writing when candidate filling will resume. Since Johnson-Tonkins is a Democrat and Wilkinson a Republican, a primary election is required.
