Temporary road keeps Oakdale open during bridge construction A detour on Oakdale Road began Jan. 14, but it is only a slight shift onto a temporary roadway while the North Carolina Department of Transportation constructs a bridge over the new Jamestown Bypass, or Project U-2412A as it is officially called. Traffic will be moved to the temporary road for approximately one year. “NCDOT decided to install a temporary road due to the railroad crossing on Oakdale being a switching station for trains and some of the trains can sit and block the road for 30 to 45 minutes at a time,” said Kris Lorenz, resident project engineer with NCDOT. “This would cause traffic to be trapped with no way to get around and also, if there was an emergency, no one would be able to respond to the emer-
gency while a train had the road blocked.” Originally told Oakdale Road would be closed for the bridge construction, in October 2021 the Jamestown Town Council learned NCDOT would not close the road for bypass construction, but would construct the on-site detour. Lorenz said the temporary road is approximately a half-mile in length and is nearly the same height as the old road but drivers should be careful because it is slightly narrower. The driveways of two houses on Oakdale Road were affected, but NCDOT was able to connect those driveways to the temporary road. NCDOT has had a few more problems causing delays in construction. “We have had some problems getting the existing utilities moved out of conflict with the new road and [that] has added work to the
aarP committee plans for 2022 By CaROL BROOKs FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com Jamestown’s AARP Livable Communities Committee started the new year at its Jan. 6 meeting discussing a survey that is available from the national committee. The local group is planning on presenting the survey to the Jamestown area this year to see if residents believe the town lives up to its designation as a member of AARP’s Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities, a designation it received in November. Members discussed the length of the survey and whether all the questions applied to Jamestown and whether others should be added. The group will meet again in March to further discuss the survey. The AARP age-friendly network encourages states, counties, cities, towns and rural areas to prepare for the rapid aging of our nation’s population. The network encourages elected officials and local leaders to focus on and strengthen the features and services that help to make communities livable for residents of all ages, from the cradle through retirement. The next step for the local committee is to plan programs and events for the network. Through the agefriendly program, AARP helps participating communities to become more livable and age-friendly by creating safer and more
walkable streets, needed housing and transportation options, better access to key services, and opportunities for residents to participate in community activities. The committee discussed holding a live and virtual event in February. The topic was not decided but several pre-recorded programs are available. There is also the possibility of a shred event around tax time this year. Councilmember Rebecca Rayborn, who heads the Livable Communities Committee remarked that many adults had the opportunity to learn more about how computers, their smart phones or other items worked during the period when Covid19 discouraged gathering together. “Have virtual meetings allowed you to visit more with people?” she asked the committee, which itself was meeting via Zoom. Talk turned to the successful Santa for Seniors gift drive held before Christmas. It was organized at the last minute but boxes placed at Town Hall and Cakes by B’s Blue House Bakery collected “a trunk full” of donations for the nearby Shannon Gray Rehabilitation and Recovery Center. Items included socks, puzzles, crossword and Sudoku books, adult coloring books, toiletries and more. Jamestown is the 585th community to enroll in the AARP Network of AgeFriendly States and Communities program.

project,” Lorenz added. The current projected opening of the Jamestown Bypass, from I-74 in High Point to Guilford College Road in Jamestown is Nov. 1, 2023, approximately one year from an earlier announced date. The bypass has been in the planning stages for decades. Right-of-way acquisition began in 2009 but stopped when funding for the project was eliminated. Acquisition resumed when funding was restored. Construction began in 2019. This is the fourth road leading into Jamestown to be closed or detoured in recent years. Motorists used a temporary bridge over Deep River in 20062007 as a new bridge was constructed on West Main Street. East Main Street was closed from Teague Drive for several months in 2008 as the North Carolina Railroad constructed a second track over the railroad bridge. The detour directed motorists several

miles out of their way along Guilford and Guilford College roads. More recently, East Fork Road closed in 2020 for construction of a pedestrian bridge over High Point City Lake. Motorists were directed to Penny Road as a detour.
Motorists traveling Oakdale Road will be detoured onto a temporary road while a new bridge is constructed over the Jamestown Bypass. The view is looking south toward Harvey Road. The former Oakview United Methodist Church is on the top right.
Metz leaves legacy of caring By nORMa B. dennIs FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com There has been a lot said recently about stars who have passed away and left a hole in the heart of Hollywood. Just as deep felt, however, is the passing of Dale Metz on Jan. 5 and the hole he has left in his community. “I feel bad for Guilford County as we lost a North Star,” said Tom Anderson, a teacher at CJ Greene Education Center. “Few times in history is a person born who impacts so much and so many and is willing to be an example of this.” Metz, who for 21 years served as principal of Gateway Education Center, a public school that serves students with severe mental or physical disabilities, fought to extend appropriate education to kids with significant impairment, even before it was the law of the land. And they did. “I don’t think there’s anyone more dedicated than he was to doing whatever it took to support the special needs population,” said Margaret Akingbade, a physical therapist who worked with Metz at Gateway. CONTINUED FROM FRONT Gateway. “He knew about you and about your family.” “Every year on her birthday until she passed away at 102, Dale led a mini pilgrimage to visit Bennie Leigh Inman (founder of the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy and Orthopedic School, which led to Gateway),” Akingbade said. “That is how much he recognized and valued her contribution to our students. Many of our significantly-involved students are winners because of these giants.” Much of his free time included involvement in his community at large. Following his work with After Gateway from 2005 to 2009, he was the co-founder and past president of Handy Capable Network, a nonprofit that employed people with disabilities to refurbish used computers. He worked as a loaned executive, helping coordinate, inspire and challenge donors for the 2010 United Way fundraiser campaign. He was past executive director of the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Association, past president of the Greensboro Civitan Club, and served on the board or as a volunteer with the Guilford County Commission on Aging, the board of directors for the Arc of Greensboro and Hospice of the Piedmont. Among his varied pursuits, he was active in his church and served with the Friends of the Jamestown Library. Metz enjoyed acting and appeared with the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and acted in or directed

over 100 community, college and professional theater productions. He also acted in motion pictures and served as an advisor to motion pictures that deal with disabled children, enabling students from Gateway to participate in several movies. Locally, he portrayed Jamestown physician Dr. Madison Lindsay during historical events at the Mendenhall Homeplace and enacted the part of the good Dr. Shubal Coffin’s ghost at the home Coffin had built beside the railroad (now often called the Yellow House). One of his favorite roles, however, was that of Santa Claus to thousands of children. He was especially gentle with those who had special needs. “He knew our kids and knew how to hold them and what to do if they became upset,” Beck said. “It was so comforting to us as teachers and to the parents, who were happy to get pictures of their children with Santa.” In November 2011 Metz received the North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award and in October 2013, he received the Lifetime of Service Award from The Volunteer Center. “Dale was larger than life,” Beck said. Dale’s passing urged over 100 past and current school staff, students, and families to come together on a Facebook Messenger Group to reconnect, share photos, catch up and chat for many hours and days. “The group is Dale’s Kiddos as he was fond of calling all of us ‘kiddo,’” said Phyllis Page, a former staff member. “We all felt like Dale was with us as we spent the first day reconnecting, because Dale loved nothing more than to sit with his friends sharing stories and laughing. The group plans to reconnect in person in the future and to work together on a physical memorial to honor Dale.” The community may morn, but his legacy of caring will not soon be forgotten. It continues in all the lives he has touched.

JAMESTOWN, N.C. (Jan. 13, 2022) – A 17-year-old dual enrollment student and a longtime staff member have been named the winners of Guilford Technical Community College’s MLK Jr. Service Award. The award, being presented for the first time this year, honors members of the GTCC community who demonstrate a commitment to Martin Luther King Jr.’s ideals and help further the college’s commitment to diversity. A GTCC employee and a GTCC student will receive the award each year. Malaika Siddique, Pakistan native enrolled in GTCC’s Career and College Promise program, and Sybil Newman, director of GTCC’s Titan Link, have been honored with this year’s MLK Jr. Service Award. Siddique formed a nonprofit a year ago to help the poverty-stricken in her home country. The nonprofit funds monthly distribution of needed items in Pakistan, like warm clothes during the cold winter and water supplies during the hot summers. She has volunteered at Helping Hand for Relief and Development to box clothes and other necessities for the need in third-world countries. She has also taught a social-emotional learning class to first graders and is a blood donor ambassador at the American Red Cross. “This award is extremely valuable to me as it validates all the effort I’ve put toward community service and it motivates me to continue

This award is also the first one where I have accounted for my nonprofit, so winning this means my first step toward more progress and success.” Newman manages the college’s Titan Link program, a program that helps not only GTCC students, but also faculty and staff during difficult times. The program’s help comes in many forms, from financial to childcare to transportation and much more. Her group shined brightly throughout the pandemic, but especially early in the crisis when they were able to secure more than 300 laptops for those students who
didn’t have a home computer when GTCC’s classes went remote. “This award is a blessing. The idea of being of service is about who Dr. King was. That’s what I do,” said Newman. “I’m the conduit between students and their separation from school. I don’t separate myself from them because it could be me. I don’t think the homeless couldn’t be me because there by the grace of God go I.”
