Historic Society offers tour of cemetery When the early Quakers (Society of Friends) settled in the area around what is now Jamestown, they needed a place to worship. They established Deep River Friends Meeting in 1754 at what is now the corner of Penny Road and West Wendover Avenue and buried their dead in a cemetery beside the meetinghouse. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Shawn Rogers, director of the Mendenhall Homeplace in Jamestown, will conduct a history walk titled “Tales from Beyond the
Grave” of the cemetery on Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. “We view the tour as a means of raising much needed funds for Mendenhall Homeplace and Historic Jamestown Society,” Rogers said. “We are recommending a donation of $5 per person, with proceeds benefitting HJS. However, all are welcome regardless of their ability to contribute.” Rogers reached out to Scott Wagoner, the minister of Deep River Friends, for permission to conduct the tour. It will be similar to tours conducted by Max Carter at New Garden Friends. Deep River Friends Meeting Cemetery is one of the oldest in Guilford County but there are no

More refining on development by Planning board by CarOL brOOks freeLAnce Writer cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Planning Board is getting closer to finalizing their recommendations on how the proposed Castleton Village development should look. The Oct. 12 meeting went over points discussed at the Sept. 28 meeting, tightening up the list and prioritizing suggestions into must-do, should-do and want-to-have done lists. Once the list is complete, it will be handed over to the developer, Diamondback Investment Company, for review. For both single-family and townhome design, the type of material on the exterior of the structures is important, with the Board wanting quality material, not vinyl, as the primary material used. “We do need direction,” said Amanda Hodierne, representing Diamondback. “It’s important to hear the various aspects of what you consider ‘quality’ and let us get back and show you something in the form of a rendering. That way you don’t have to make such a narrow list.” For single-family residential design, the Board listed the following must-haves: • quality and a variety of materials; • the garage is not the focus of the front of the unit; • density; • variety of lot sizes; see PLannInG, PAGe 2
records to indicate when the cemetery was established. The actual number buried there is unknown but Rogers estimates it could be over 1,000 in the old burying ground. The church’s website states, “The earliest Friends did not believe in marking graves, but occasionally a rough fieldstone was used, the deceased’s initials scratched on the surface. It is interesting to note that as this custom became more widespread and elaborate, regulations for maintaining simplicity were established. An 1831 instruction states that stones were to be no see CeMeTery, PAGe 2

Be Strong Challenge encourages mindful movement by nOrMa b. dennIs freeLAnce Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com As North Carolina slowly begins to reopen following all the shutdowns due to the coronavirus, YMCAs across the state are encouraging communities to get back into a fitness mindset with a Be Strong Challenge. The six-week program is designed to reenergize spirit, mind and body and challenges participants to move for 20 minutes a day for five days a week. “It can be any kind of mindful movement,” said Priscilla Nobles, wellness director for the Ragsdale Family YMCA. “Any movement that feels good to your body. You can do it at home, at the gym or anywhere.” “The COVID-19 pandemic has worn us down,” said Ronda Anderson, YMCA of Greensboro president and CEO, in a statement explaining the challenge. “It’s isolated us in so many
ways. We know that we are always stronger together, and this challenge provides an opportunity to get active and healthier as one big family.” The challenge began Oct. 19, but Nobles says it is not too late to register and participate. It is free and open to the entire community, not just Y members. Visit the website ymcagreensboro. org/strong to learn more about the challenge, which is run through text messages. Text STRONG to 74121 and follow the prompts to join. Mondays will include a coaching session, Wednesdays will provide encouragement to continue and Fridays will be a celebration of completing another week of the challenge. “The first week will focus on accountability and preparing a plan to begin,” Nobles said. “Every week has a different theme and challenge. These will be explained in texts and
Facebook videos.” In addition to selecting an individual accountability partner, participants can join a Facebook group that provides more accountability. Representatives from different Y’s in the YMCA of Greensboro district will share motivational videos to help keep participants on target. A tracking sheet is available online. It can
be printed and placed in a prominent spot in your home to remind you of your goals and progress. Those who complete the challenge will receive a free tee shirt and be entered in a drawing for a six-month membership to the Y. The joining fee is being waved for any non-member who chooses to join the Y between now and Dec. 5.
Project bArK supports a $10/$15 fix by nOrMa b. dennIs freeLAnce Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com It’s an exciting time for volunteers of Project BARK (Bringing Animals Relief and Kindness). As they look forward to the organization’s quicklyapproaching 10th anniversary, they can look back with satisfaction to all the group has accomplished. Since it started in December 2010, Project BARK has placed 1,409 free dog houses, placed 28 abused animals in “forever” homes, funded more than 8,500 spay/neuter procedures (with more scheduled weekly, which in turn has prevented more than 40,000 unwanted animal births), placed 205 shelters in feral cat communities and provided six 10-by10-foot temporary enclosures for mother dogs and puppies until appropriate homes could be found. Project BARK is the brainchild of Libby Scandale, a former art teacher at Ragsdale High School. While walking her rescued Cairn Terrier, Beasley, on cold winter nights, she could not help but think of

The oldest section of the cemetery, known originally as the Burying Ground, is largely free of grave markers.” “Understandably, burial records for the cemetery are not complete,” Rogers said. “Keep in mind that many early burials were not recorded and some of the records have been lost to time. Deaths were often recorded in Quaker meeting minutes, but burials rarely were. Also consider that many early Quaker burials were unmarked, or marked with a simple fieldstone devoid of any identifying information. A number of fieldstones have been removed over the years, or have seemingly sunk below the ground, due to erosion and the effects of the freezethaw cycle. “We view the tour as a fun and educational way of highlighting some of the more interesting and meaningful stories associated with folks who are buried in Deep River Friends Cemetery,” he continued. “Many of their lives have had a lasting impact on our community and we believe that their stories are worthy of being shared.” Many familiar names from the

T.M.G.: There isn’t a condition called “brittle veins”: Whoever told you that was trying to explain a symptom you have. They may have meant that your capillaries (the smallest type of blood vessel) break easily. That’s a cause of easy bruising. They may have meant that you have stiff blood vessels, from calcium or cholesterol. That’s a cause of high blood pressure. They may have been trying to draw blood or put in an IV and found that your vein “blew,” meaning the needle went through the vein entirely and you had bleeding under the skin. There are also some rare blood disorders causing blood vessels to become fragile, and sometimes inflamed. These can be quite serious, but I doubt you have one of these. You would have been referred to a specialist. While I understand why medical professionals will use nonspecific terms like these, they can lead to confusion. PLannInG continued from front • larger lot sizes with a minimum of 10,000 sq. ft. for single-family detached, as specified in the current Land Development Ordinance; • a deeper setback from the street to make certain any vehicle parked in the driveway does not overlap the sidewalk; • a variety of garage locations; and

• separate driveways for each unit. Two items appeared on the should-have list: • a crawl space, not slab, for single-family detached units and • a porch and/or covered entryway. For townhome design, the Board echoed some of the same must-haves as for single-family residential, but added: • double garages should be 24 feet wide, single garages 12 feet wide; • a variety of styles; • no more than six units in one building, with four preferable; • one or two stories are permitted, with age-targeted housing being one story; and
• unable to see the backs of the units from the street. A major point of contention is the density, or number of units, in the development. Currently there are 708 townhouses planned and 775 single-family houses, for a total of 1,517 residential units, with 3.25 units per acre, more than the Board prefers. Some of the must-have points above would cause those numbers to be lowered. There was some talk of having a maximum of 1,000 units in the development but the Board will wait to see what Diamondback comes back with on the new plans. Whatever number of units is finally decided upon, there will be an impact on
the already overcrowded school system. The Board would like to see a musthave agreement of some kind of mitigation strategy for a new school and a want-to-have saying the developer would donate 40 acres for a school, perhaps stipulating that if the school were not built within a stipulated timeframe, the acreage would revert back to the developer. If the Guilford County School system received acreage for a school by donation, it would probably move a new school in that area up in the construction timeline. Pilot Elementary School in Adams Farm was built as a land donation. There is still a question
as to whether a ball field or Farmer’s Market are needed in Castleton Village and who would maintain the Farmer’s Market. The Board feels those sections of the original plan could be put to better use. If retained, the Board would like to see the ball field relocated away from the corner of Guilford College and Mackay roads. For the first time in several meetings, the public was invited into the building for comments. However, after waiting over two hours, only one person spoke. The basic list from the Sept. 28 meeting is part of the Oct. 12 packet available on the Town’s website, www.jamestown-nc. gov/my-government/meet-
ing-minutes. The video of the meeting is available at www.youtube.com/c/ TownofJamestownNC. Planning Board members still welcome comments from residents. A list of members and contact information can be downloaded from www.jamestown-nc. gov/my-government/planning-zoning. The next meeting of the Planning Board will be Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center. The public is invited to offer comments at the meeting. The meeting will also be streamed live on the Town of Jamestown’s YouTube page. The link is as follows: www.youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC.

continued from front ters. The idea emerged to use plastic barrels supplied by a local carwash and later by Miller Brewing Company in Eden and place them on wooden bases for stability. Many were given away free of charge and some were sold for $20 to help cover expenses. Slone would load seven or eight on his truck and volunteers would walk along streets in low-income neighborhoods to find dogs without shelters. “We would distribute all of them within a couple of hours,” Slone said. “During our original outreach program for dogs without shelters we found many female dogs that were unfixed,” Scandale said. “This perpetuated the problem of unintended litters placed at the animal shelter.” In 2011, Project BARK began its first steps toward a spay/neuter program. “We understood the challenge within six months and in May funded the first one,” Slone said. “To date we have funded 8,500 spay and neuter procedures.” “Mathematically this represents keeping tens of thousands of unintended litters from being born,” Scandale added. After the anti-tethering ordinance was enacted, the need for shelters decreased and Project BARK volunteers shifted their main focus to making sure animals were spayed and neutered. The group originally worked with two clinics to provide this service, but now have four locations in Guilford County, including James Landing Veterinary Hospital, Sheets Pet Clinic, High Point Veterinary Hospital and The Humane Society of the Piedmont. Qualified Guilford County pet owners receive a voucher that allows cats, small dogs and pit bulls or pit mixes to be spayed or neutered for $10 and large dogs for $15. “This is a big county and we could use more places willing to handle low-cost spay and neuter procedures,” Slone said. “Our vision for the near future is to get at least two more providers under our belt.
We really need a vet on the east side of Greensboro.” Project BARK receives funding from Guilford County to help in their spay/ neuter program. “We are so grateful to the Guilford County Commissioners for seeing both the economic and humane benefits of spay/neuter,” Scandale said. “It is much more cost-effective to prevent thousands of unintended animal litters than to house, care for, and medically treat those thousands, in hopes of eventual adoption at our animal shelter. With spay/neuter, everyone wins.” Project BARK has strong partnerships with other local animal advocacy groups such as SPCA of the Triad, Break the Chain Kennel Kru, Animal Rescue and Foster Program (ARFP) and others.
