Hay wins Preservation Award BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com It was a little harder to pick the winner of the 7th annual Mary A. Browning Historic Preservation Award than in previous years, but Richard Hay emerged as the winner. “We had a bumper crop of nominees this year, and we had some good ones,” Browning said at the Oct. 17 presentation ceremony featuring six nominees. “We have lots of people who have worked hard … to help with preservation … and take Jamestown’s history very seriously.” Hay lives next door to the Mendenhall Homeplace in the Dr. Shubal Coffin house, also known as the Coffin-Robbins-
Tilden house. He was nominated by someone who wished to remain anonymous and represented the Robbins, Tilden and Hay families. “Richard, with his wife Carol, owns, lives in, maintains, studies and preserves the house known as the Dr. Shubal Coffin house on West Main Street in Jamestown,” the nomination letter read. Hay inherited the house from his mother, Martha Hay, a former active member of the Historic Jamestown Society. It was Martha who moved the house farther back in the lot, away from the street, and enlarged it, “without changing the essential character of the house and by following the guidance of the North Carolina Department of
Cultural Resources.” Richard Hay investigated the old pottery operation that was on the lot adjoining his home. Martha Hay recalled stories told by her grandmother, Martha Robbins Tilden, who knew Minerva Mendenhall, the oldest daughter of Richard Mendenhall who constructed the homeplace on West Main Street beside the Coffin house. Tilden was born in what is now called the Madison Lindsay House, which she arranged to be moved from its original location on the corner of Scientific and Main Streets to the Mendenhall Homeplace. Tilden’s father purchased Coffin’s house in the 1850s when the SEE HAY, PAGE 6

Council approves several items BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com After several months of discussion, on Oct. 20 the Jamestown Town Council finally unanimously approved the Coronavirus Intergovernmental Agreement with Guilford County. Jamestown has been approved for up to $40,070 of the county’s relief fund to be used only for Covid-19-related expenses from March 27 to Dec. 20 of this year. One requirement of the agreement that all expenses must first be submitted to FEMA, but Jamestown has not had many expenses and the Council questioned whether they should approve the agreement. “I spoke with the county manager,” said Kenny Cole, Jamestown town manager. “Since the town does not have a lot of expenditures, he suggested [we] submit our expenses to Guilford County.” With the Council’s approval of the agreement, Finance Director Judy Gallman presented a budget amendment to cover the expenses of the purchase of a camera and tripod system to better broadcast meetings to the public via the Town’s YouTube channel. The camera system is portable and can be used in various locations as needed. Since the coronavirus hit and social distancing became
A surprise candidate in 2024
Guess what. The presidential election is just about to begin. “You mean just about end,” I can hear you thinking. But I am talking about the 2024 presidential election campaign. It will be going strong even before all the votes in the 2020 contest have been counted. No matter who wins this year, there will be an open seat in 2024. If Trump wins, he will be term-limited and ineligible

to run again. Should Biden win, he will almost certainly not run for a second term that would begin when he would be 82. As he said earlier this year, “I view myself as a transition candidate.” Thus, whether or not Biden wins, Democratic presidential hopefuls will go to work immediately. Kamala Harris, whether she is vice president-elect or simply a U.S. senator, will be pointing for 2024. Other senators in contention include New Jersey’s Cory Booker, Minnesota’s Amy Klobuchar, Colorado’s Michael Bennet, Virginia’s Tim Kaine, and Massachusetts’ Elizabeth Warren. Kaine may be less ambitious and flashy than his fellow senators, but is solid and has the experience of running a national campaign as Hillary Clinton’s running mate in 2016. Add former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper to the list if he wins a senate seat in the 2020 election. Lots of Democratic governors will be thinking about running, including Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Andrew Cuomo of New York, Jay Inslee of Washington state, Gavin Newsom of California, J. B. Pritzker of Illinois, and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan.

Teacher embraces space study for the next generation Janis McDonald may never become an astronaut, but that fact has not diminished her fascination with space and space travel. She describes herself as a science, space nerd. It began as a child when she watched the “moon walk” and other space launchings. Her parents took her to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and she in turn took her children there. When she learned about the N.C. Space Education Ambassadors program, she naturally wanted to participate. She applied for the program – both doubtful and hopeful that she would be chosen. McDonald, a chemistry teacher at Southwest Guilford High School, was excited to learn she was one of 15 teachers statewide selected as the first cohort of

Her enthusiasm for the NCSEA program is clearly evident when she talks about it. As a chemistry teacher she hopes to share how the skills necessary for space travel are related to chemistry and the other sciences. “And that one does not have to actually be a ‘rocket scientist’ to work in the science field,” she added.

From The Front COUNCIL
CONTINUED FROM FRONT the norm, all Town meetings have been broadcast on YouTube but the quality has not always been satisfactory prior to the purchase of the camera and microphones for each council or committee member. The amendment passed unanimously. There was a lively discussion among Council members on whether to officially participate in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, at no cost to the Town. The Town would also be eligible for related AARP grants. Mayor Lynn Montgomery asked if it was basically an assessment. “Yes, you incorporate it in your planning,” Cole said. “We’re already doing it,” said Councilmember Rebecca Rayborn. She and another Jamestown resident visited the AARP North Carolina Conference in November 2019 and learned about it. “We were excited because so much of what we talk about doing in Jamestown and what we already do is completely in line with their age-friendly and livable communities,” Rayborn added. “It’s kind
of getting credit for what we’re already doing.” In 2016 Jamestown became a Certified Retirement Community, so the age-friendly community would tie into that designation. Councilmember John Capes did not think now was the time to join the network. “I do think the whole concept is a great idea,” Capes said. “I have nothing against it at all. “The timing is wrong with the Johnson property right now. We have a lot on our plate already as it relates to the Johnson property.” He added that Council decisions and Planning Board decisions – including the Johnson property – should be kept separate at this time. He intimated that some people might perceive one decision could affect a decision by the other. “The optics are a problem,” Capes said. “We should definitely pursue this [but] table it right now.” Other councilmembers disagreed. “I think there’s a market for it in Jamestown,” said Martha Wolfe, noting
with an update to the Comprehensive Plan in process, age-friendly communities could be incorporated into the plan. Capes’ motion to table the resolution died for lack of a second, but a motion to approve it passed by a 3-1 vote. In other business: The late Alan Johnson was honored with a resolution recognizing his contribution with not only saving the Jamestown Public School and its restoration as the Jamestown Public Library but his lifelong commitment to the building. Johnson was an active member of the Old Jamestown School Association, the Jamestown Alumni Association, Friends of the Library and Library Board of Trustees. A plaque has been installed outside the library in his honor. Alan Johnson Jr. accepted the resolution honoring his father who died in April. Town Attorney Beth Koonce reported that one of the two cases Lori Herron and her husband filed against the Town has been dismissed. The cases are related to the Town’s
Board of Adjustment ruling in February, assessing civil penalties for failure to remove the 10 pot-bellied pigs she keeps at her house at 2216 Guilford College Road, following a notice of violation from the Town of Jamestown on Feb. 27, 2019. Koonce believes the second case will not be heard until after the first of the year. The Town is proceeding with demolition of 301 Lee Street. Cole reported the Town has begun an inventory of the houses at the Oakdale Mill village. When the inventory is complete, the Planning Department will issue a letter to the owner to remedy the issues. Construction has begun on a new human resources office at Town Hall. Although the meeting was open for public comment, no one spoke. The Council went into closed session to discuss the performance evaluation of the Town Manager. After approximately one hour, the Council resumed the open session but no further business was discussed and the meeting adjourned.
Area Deaths & Funerals Cynthia Davis Hassell SALISBURY – Cynthia Davis Hassell, 78, died at her residence on Friday, October 16, 2020. Cynthia was born in High Point on May 10, 1942 to the late George Drennen Davis and Ruth Gorham Davis. In addition to her parents, a daughter, Christine Elizabeth Hassell also preceded Cynthia in death. Cynthia was a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church where her parents were also members. Cynthia had a love of trains and train travel, which was one of the reasons she moved to Salisbury. Since moving to Salisbury she was a member Rufty-Holmes Senior Center and the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. She also was an avid birdwatcher. Cynthia spent over 18 years as a business assistant at the endodontic practice of Olmsted, Torney, Mohorn, Mohorn and Morgan, DDS, PA. Cynthia's greatest enjoyment in life was being a grandmother; her grandchildren were the love of her life. Cynthia is survived by her son, William "Bill" Bundy Hassell, Jr. and wife, Robin of Buford, GA; brothers, N. Parke Davis II and wife, Dottie Miller Davis of Asheville, G. Drenner Davis, Jr. and wife, Shirley of Louisburg and her five grandchildren, Hannah Noel Hassell, William "Trey" Bundy Hassell III, Emily Elisabeth Hassell, Madeline Olivia Hamor and Miles Christopher Hamor. Should North Carolina’s Governor Roy Cooper win a solid reelection victory, he could be in play as someone who could help Democrats win a competitive state in 2024. There are many other prospects. Pete Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Stacey Abrams, 2018 gubernatorial candidate in Georgia, and business leader Andrew Yang have, by their articulate and energetic campaigns, shown they can compete in any political race.
There will be more candidates and lots of good competition, but I predict the Democratic nominee in 2024 will be Kamala Harris. On the Republican side, a group of Mikes will compete. Vice President Mike Pence will start out at the top of the prospects list, closely followed by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. There is a covey of U.S. senators including Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee,

Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Ted Cruz of Texas, Josh Hawley of Missouri, Mike Lee of Utah, Marco Rubio of Florida, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Rick Scott of Florida, and Tim Scott of South Carolina. In addition to DeWine, other governors will compete, including, Greg Abbott of Texas, Ron DeSantis of Florida, Larry Hogan of Maryland, and Nikki Haley of South Carolina, a former governor and ambassador to the United Nations.
We don’t give you the world . . . just our little corner of it.
Other possibilities include Paul Ryan, a former House speaker, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Then there are Ivanka and Donald Jr., and maybe other Trump family members who could claim the crown. My prediction for the Republican nominee in 2024 is Mike Pompeo. He has military, legislative, and foreign policy credentials to go along with a record of loyalty to Trump. So, there you have it.
In 2024, Kamala Harris and Mike Pompeo will win their party’s nomination and square off against each other in the general election. You can count on it, except there is a wild card if Donald Trump loses this year’s election. That wild card is Trump. Earlier this month former Trump aide Steve Bannon told The Australian newspaper that if Trump loses the 2020 election, he will run again in 2024. Bannon said, “I’ll
make this prediction right now: If for any reason the election is stolen from, or in some sort of way Joe Biden is declared the winner, Trump will announce he’s going to run for reelection in 2024. You’re not going to see the end of Donald Trump.”

Toast pumpkin seeds for nutritious treat
Good Housekeeping NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER Clam chowder, New England’s signature seafood dish, derives its name from chaudière, the French word for “cauldron.” The saltiness of clams and pork varies; taste the soup before serving and season if needed.
BY ANGELA SHELF MEDEARIS THE KITCHEN DIVA Pumpkins are one of the highpoints of the fall harvest. The fruit originated in Central America. Pumpkins -- like cantaloupes, cucumbers and squash -belong to the Cucurbitaceae, or gourd family. Most of the pumpkins that are grown in the United States come from Illinois and become available in October. Whole pumpkins and the carved pumpkin shell are often used as decorative items. The interior pulp is a nutritious addition to savory and sweet dishes, but don’t throw out the seeds! Pumpkin seeds make a tasty snack that’s low in calories, high in protein and rich in fiber, as well as vitamins B, E and K, and zinc, iron and magnesium. Pumpkin seeds also contain many beneficial fatty acids and amino acids. The flat, dark-green pumpkin seeds, or pepitas as they are often called, are covered with a yellow-white husk. Pepitas are a key ingredient in Mexican recipes and are often used in the cuisines of many other cultures. Toasted pumpkin seeds add a nutritious crunch when used as a topping for sauteed vegetables or salads. Grinding pumpkin seeds with garlic, parsley or cilantro and adding olive oil and lemon juice to the mixture makes a wonderful salad dressing. Pumpkin seeds are also a delicious addition to oatmeal-raisin cookies or granola recipes. Pumpkins seeds are a power-packed addition to sauces, soups and salads, and they’re a healthy snack. Roasting and adding spices enhances their flavor. This recipe provides a few sug- 1 Vance-Kerr-5p5x10p5-draft3.pdf gestions for preparing pumpkin seeds.
1 cup water 18 large (about 4 pounds) littleneck clams, scrubbed 3 slices bacon, chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 pound (3 medium) all-purpose potatoes, peeled and chopped 2 cups half-and-half 1 cup milk 3/4 teaspoons salt or to taste
TOASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS 1 pumpkin (field or sugar), about 2 cups 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons salt, plus more for sprinkling Cooking oil spray 1. Cut a fresh, ripe pumpkin in half. Remove the membrane and seeds, and as much pulp as possible. Separate out seeds (leaving some of the pulp on adds to the flavor). 2. Do not rinse the seeds, as they will steam instead of toasting. Pick through the seeds and remove any that are split. Do not place the seeds on a paper towel, as seeds will stick to the paper. Instead, place seeds on a sheet of waxed or parchment paper, or on lightly oiled aluminum foil. Heat oven to 300 F. 3. For Spicy Pumpkin Seeds, mix 1/2 teaspoon each of garlic powder, onion powder, salt, cumin, sugar and coriander and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper with the seeds before toasting. 4. For Sweet Seeds, mix 3 10/15/20 4:23 Pumpkin PM tablespoons of dark brown sugar and
1/4 teaspoon of salt with the seeds before toasting. 5. Spread the vegetable oil on a shallow pan. Sprinkle seeds over oil in single layer. Bake 10 minutes, stir and spray with the cooking oil spray. Bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, stir and spray with the cooking oil spray. Bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes as needed or until lightly browned, being careful not to burn them. 6. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with salt. The seeds will become crisper as they cool. Shell the seeds, or for more fiber, eat them whole. Store in an airtight container. 1. In a 5- to 6-quart saucepot, heat water to boiling over high heat. Add clams; heat to boiling. Reduce heat slightly; cover and simmer until clams open, 5 to 10 minutes. Transfer clams to a bowl as they open. Discard any clams that have not opened. 2. When cool enough to handle, remove clams from their shells and coarsely chop. Discard shells. Strain clam broth through sieve lined with paper towels into measuring cup; if necessary add enough water to equal 2 cups. 3. In same clean saucepot, cook bacon over medium heat until lightly browned. With slotted spoon, remove bacon to paper towels. Add onion to drippings in pot; cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in flour and pepper until blended; cook 1 minute. Gradually stir in clam broth until smooth. Add potatoes; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes. 4. Stir in half-and-half, milk and chopped clams; heat through (do not boil). Stir in bacon. Taste for seasoning; add salt as needed. Makes about 6 cups. * Each serving: About 371 calories, 22g total fat (11g saturated), 77mg cholesterol, 534mg sodium, 24g total carbohydrate, 18g protein. doctor moved to his new home about a mile east, currently referred to as the Yellow House. Her parents also owned what is now called the Robbins-Holton mill and house on Ragsdale Road on the banks of Deep River. “Richard’s ancestry ties to much of Jamestown’s history,” the nomination letter reads. “He has faithfully followed the family tradition and has become a valued member of the historical community here in Jamestown.” Other nominees for the award were Elizabeth Greeson for her work with Oakdale Methodist Church, Shirley Haworth for her work with HJS, Gary Haynes for his work as architect of the reno-
vation of the old Jamestown Public School into the Public Library, Alan Johnson for his work in saving the school for the library and Carol Brooks for her historical articles in the Jamestown News and her work with HJS. “The award honors the many people around our extended area who make sure our rich history stayed alive and was available to be appreciated by people who visited us and for those of us who were here to gain new insight as new research came forward,” said Shirley Haworth, HJS president. “The annual award is in recognition of people who worked to preserve and maintain the history, tradition and stories of this area.”
The award, given by the Historic Jamestown Society, honors Browning, a well-known local historian and genealogist. She has used census records and the National Archives as well as research in the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College, local libraries and newspaper archives to compile her ever-expanding notes on the area. “It’s been a pleasure to participate in this award program since it began,” Browning said. The award is usually presented in May, which is Preservation Month nationally, but due to COVID-19, the ceremony was delayed until October at a shelter at High Point City Lake Park.
