Drums Alive brings out the music within The sounds of tapping drumsticks and whacking pool noodles against large, brightly-colored balls filled the room as Randi Lee led participants in a session of Drums Alive. Lively music set the stage for the recent cardio drumming activity at A Moment in Time meeting at Jamestown United Methodist Church. The meetings allow those facing memory challenges and their caregivers to enjoy mutual activities.

It did not take long to see that the drumming session was a hit with both participants and volunteers. Lee normally conducts Drums Alive sessions at retirement communities working with residents in all levels of care. She also has open classes every Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Senior Resources of Guilford County in Greensboro. Before the drumming session began at A Moment In Time, Shelby Kline talked briefly about Healthteam Advantage, which gave a grant to provide Drums

Diamondback wanted Johnson property to be in Greensboro It appears Diamondback Investment Group wanted to build on the Johnson farm property so much that the company looked into having it annexed into Greensboro, instead of its current location within Jamestown’s extra-territorial jurisdiction. Jamestown’s Interim Town Manager Dave Treme informed the Town Council on Sept. 21 that in March of this year – after the Town Council had denied their development plan in February – the company contacted the Guilford County delegation to the North Carolina General Assembly with a request to move the annexation line closer to Jamestown, making the Johnson property within Greensboro’s jurisdiction. Diamondback approached the senators and representatives individually to plead the case, presumably believing the development would have a better chance if within Greensboro. Treme was notified and invited to participate in a Zoom meeting March 11 – along with Planning Direc-
therapist with a nationallyrecognized certification in neurology music therapy and is a certified Drums Alive instructor. Although Lee has always loved music, it was not her first career choice. She felt there were no opportunities for work in that field unless one chose to perform or teach. “I did not want to do either,” she acknowledged. “So I started college at East Carolina University as a Photo submitted nursing major.” A Moment In Time participants enjoyed using drum sticks and cutoff noodles to complete a cardio-drumsee drum, page 6 ming activity.

Alive for the meeting. Participants and volunteers then took their places in front of the huge, multi-colored exercise balls and the fun began. “Not only does the drumming provide cardio benefits, it helps activate many areas of the brain,” Lee said. “It helps with handeye coordination and the sessions provide socialization where individuals can come together and participate in a musical experience.” Lee, owner of Magnolia Melodies Music Therapy, is a board certified music
tor Matthew Johnson, Clerk Katie Weiner, Mayor Lynn Montgomery and land use attorney Tom Terrell – with Diamondback representatives and a majority of the members of the Guilford delegation. “It was mostly a listening session by the Guilford delegation,” Johnson said and Treme said there was not a formal petition to the General Assembly in Raleigh. “Normally, if it’s a local bill, you have to have the support of your delegation,” Treme said. He added he did not believe the delegation understood what the matter was about. “Primarily this was a request by Diamondback to withdraw that property from our jurisdiction, which the General Assembly has the legal right to do,” Johnson said. “The delegation listened to see if [Jamestown] was agreeable to it.” Each interested party had an opportunity to speak for 30 minutes. Treme was very complimentary about Montgomery’s advocacy for Jamestown as she cited Diamondback’s inconsistencies with the 2007 Comprehensive Plan. see johnson, page 5
By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Being born an American citizen could certainly be considered a blessing. Becoming a naturalized citizen, however, takes lots of effort. But it is well worth the time and energy to those who seek citizenship in what was referred to for years as “the melting pot of the world.” Immigrants have come to this country with the idea they could become Americans no matter their origins. Although immigration to the United States is more complicated than it was over a hundred years ago, the idea is still the same. People from all over the world are welcomed and encouraged to integrate into American society through citizenship. To become a citizen, an immigrant needs to learn about America’s social, economic, and cultural standards, starting with at least a basic ability to understand and use the English language. Since 2013, Brenda Forlines has been helping area immigrants gain the status of American citizen. She, along with Evelyn Frost and Chuck and Ola Moy, teaches weekly citizenship classes at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church in Greensboro. Following graduation from college,

Feeling led to attend seminary, she then began a lifetime career working with the Baptist Home Mission Board (later called North American Mission Board). She worked as director of Christian Social Ministry at various Baptist associations along the east coast ranging from the inter city of Philadelphia to Jacksonville, Fla. “I always did the same type of work only under different titles,” she said. “My job was to get churches more see citizen, page 6
Tour of historic cemetery returns for second year By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Last year’s tour of the burial ground at Deep River Friends Meeting was such a success that the Historic Jamestown Society is offering it again this year – for four days instead of the one held last year. “I was delightfully surprised by the robust turnout for last year’s cemetery walk,” said Shawn Rogers, director of the Mendenhall Homeplace in Jamestown. “Unfortunately, a number of folks reached out to me last year to express their disappointment with the fact that we only offered one tour. We made sure to address that issue this time around.” This year’s “Tales from Beyond the Grave” will be held Oct. 15 16, 29 and 30, beginning each day at 4 p.m. Rogers will tell stories about some of those interred in the burial ground, often ending up at the person’s gravesite. “We view the tour as a fun and educational way of highlighting some of the more interesting and meaningful stories associated with folks who are buried in Deep River Friends see cemetery, page 6

Bland Simpson’s North Carolina The next time somebody asks you to describe North Carolina, pull out and read aloud this quote from the beginning pages of Bland Simpson’s new book. “It is a line of sandbars some nearly thirty miles out into the Atlantic Ocean some less than a mile from the mainland; a set of broad, flat terraces, vast farm lands, and timber stands broken by willow-clad rivers both black water and brown and by their deep gum and cypress swamps, occasional bluffs, and green and golden marshes; a host of hills

By d.g. martin One on one made of red clay and sand, growing pines called loblolly and longleaf, oaks called white and red and turkey and blackjack, red maples and river birches and hickories with shaggy bark; and then a profusely eruptive land of tall folds upon folds, peaks, ridges and rocky tops, domes, cliffs, grassy balds, and gorges, a host of mile-high mountains, too, with a vast quilt of blue haze laid out over it all.” Then, if you really like this person, guide her to Simpson’s new book, “North Carolina: Land of Water, Land of Sky.” It is stuffed full of color photographs of sights across North Carolina taken by Simpson’s wife, Ann Cary Simpson, professional photographer Scott Taylor, and naturalist Tom Earnhardt. The lovely photos supplement the book’s main attraction, a trip across North Carolina led by a master communicator who is thoroughly familiar with and deeply in love with his subject. In his first section, “This Wet and Water-Loving Land,” Simpson takes readers up and down the coast from “sleepy Plymouth,” to the British Cemetery on Ocracoke Island, through the swampy land of the Lumbee along the Lumber River, wind-

ing up in Southport and its gravesites “beneath the bending and yearning live oaks, the small sassafras, the unmoving Spanish moss.” In his second section, “Short Hills and Sand Hills,” he guides us across the Piedmont including poignant stops from his boyhood in Chapel Hill’s Battle Woods, Forest Theatre, and Gimghoul Castle. He shows us other underappreciated sites all over the region, including, for instance, “The Uwharries stand tall and proud high above the same-named river that flows through them, national forest and a mountain range (one of the oldest on earth) comprising the biggest wilderness in the middle of North Carolina, a great wild country scarcely known, if at all, to most of our citizens. South and west of Asheboro, west of Troy and the state zoo and the state pottery center in Seagrove, this 50,000-acre big empty with its almost 1,000-foot peaks lures wild spirits to it, for the Uwharries are full of streams, trails, and ghosts.” Simpson’s third section, “Jump-up Country,” demonstrates that, while his prior writings have focused

on the eastern part of the state, he has not neglected the awesome treasures of the rivers and high mountains in the west. He takes us to some of his favorites. One of them, Max Patch in Madison County near the Tennessee line, “a-top-of-theworld corner” about which he writes, “With a 360-degree view, we looked down upon a rim of hills all around us and rolling blue hills beyond us in all directions, at crags and haze and clouds already in valleys near and far below, this midafternoon of a summer’s day.” The book concludes on a somber note, Simpson’s visit with William Friday shortly before he died in 2012. Friday warned that the natural treasures, such as the ones described and illustrated in this book, were in peril. He saw only negative actions from state government regarding the preservation of our rivers and streams. Simpson concludes, “What Mr. Friday saw— and foresaw—was instead a message of carelessness, recklessness, and even defiance of common sense, and this was what had so clearly driven his concerns about water during the last months of his life.”

From the Front Teen who made threats to schools released By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com
Rayshaun Williams, the Jamestown teenager arrested for threatening mass violence to area schools via social media, was released into the custody of his mother, Jalida Gwinn, on Oct. 1. Williams, who was arrested Sept. 22 after High Point Police received numerous tips that threats had been made, focusing on Southwest Guilford, Andrews, Southern Guilford, Southeast Guilford
and Northeast Guilford, via Snapchat. Pictures of firearms appeared on the site but no firearms were found at Williams’ residence in the new Magnolia on Main development in Jamestown, just inside town limits. He admitted to the social media threats when he was arrested. Williams received a hearing on Oct. 1 and a judge ruled that he was neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community and the $250,000 bond was reduced. The actual amount of the new bond was not released.
Williams’ attorney, Jason Keith, believes the original bond was excessive. “I understand the purpose of the court, the criminal justice system trying to deter that type of activity,” Keith told WFMY last week. “However, given the nature of his lack of criminal history his cooperation, the fact he was involved in giving any information they requested, coming from a single-parent home, he’s just a high school student who wants to go to the prom. That’s an excessive bond.”
At Friday’s hearing, the principals from Southwest and Northeast Guilford high schools both said they did not oppose the bond being lowered. The state also did not oppose it but wanted it to be within the legal guidelines. One stipulation of Williams’ release was that he must disable all social media and follow recommendations of a mental health evaluation. He is expected back in court Oct. 29 and, if found guilty, faces a sentence of 39 months in prison.

continued from front At the end of the meeting, Rep. Jon Hardister, who was moderating, said the delegation would consider the matter. “They did not achieve a consensus,” Johnson said and Treme added that there was no vote, and the Town has not heard back from the delegation. Johnson did not find that any local bill relating to this had been filed with the General Assembly within the appropriate timeframe. So, the Johnson property remains in Jamestown’s jurisdiction. In March 1991, Jamestown and Greensboro signed an annexation agreement noting a line over which
neither municipality could annex. This agreement was renewed in December 2018 and will expire Jan. 1, 2048, unless renewed. The Town has a similar annexation agreement with High Point, which will also expire in 2048. “One of the goals of the 2007 Comprehensive Plan was to add areas that should be in the annexation jurisdiction to our zoning jurisdiction,” Johnson said. Added to ETJ in 2008, the Johnson property had been on Jamestown’s side of the annexation agreement since 1991. Diamondback announced plans for the property at two neighborhood
meetings at GTCC Feb. 13, 2020, but immediately received pushback from the audience. One year later, on Feb. 16, 2021, the Jamestown Town Council denied the rezoning request and Diamondback withdrew the annexation request. The Statement of Consistency read at the Council meeting noted Diamondback’s plan was inconsistent with the Comprehensive Plan for a number of reasons. The Jamestown Planning Board spent seven meetings in discussion from August to November last year before denying the rezoning request in November.
Trustee, or Trustee’s agent conducting the sale, may begin the sale up to one hour after the time fixed herein as provided in NCGS 45-21.23. An order for possession of the property may be issued pursuant to NCGS §45-21.29 in favor of the purchaser and against the party or parties in possession by the clerk of superior court of the county in which the property is sold. Any tenant who resides in residential real property containing less than 15 rental units that is being sold in a foreclosure proceeding under Article 2A of Chapter 45 of the General Statutes may terminate the rental agreement for the dwelling unit after receiving notice pursuant to G.S. 45-21.17(4) by providing the landlord with a written notice of termination to be effective on a date stated in the notice of termination that is at least 10 days, but no more than 90 days, after the sale date contained in the notice of sale, provided that the mortgagor has not cured the default at the time the tenant provides the notice of termination. Upon termination of a rental agreement under this section, the tenant is liable for the rent due under the rental agreement prorated to the effective date of the termination payable at the time that would have been required by the terms of the rental agreement. The tenant is not liable for any other rent or damages due only to the early termination of the tenancy. Town applies for AARP Livable Communities designation By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Will Jamestown become an AARP Livable Community? That’s what the Livable Communities Committee and Jamestown Councilmember Rebecca Rayborn, who also leads the committee, hope. The application was submitted in September and the result should be known later this month. According to the application, 29.5 percent of Jamestown residents are age 60 or older. The town is already a Retire N.C. certified retirement community. Several of the town’s assets make the town an ideal candidate. High on the list is the walkability of the town, making it convenient to attend yoga, movies and music in Wrenn Miller Park, parades, dining and shopping. The Jamestown

AARp CONTINUED FROM FRONT able to audit courses free of charge. Pennybyrn at Maryfield features a five star-rated transitional rehab, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing facility. A standalone transitional rehabilitation center specializing in short-term rehabilitation is currently under construction. Pennybyrn also has plans to open a seven-day-a-week Adult Care and Support Center. The recently-approved Parks & Recreation Master Plan includes many amenities for older adults, including flat walking paths, ample shade, dog parks, and space for yoga. Town plans also include an updated pedestrian plan, bike lanes, advocating for affordable and age-in-place housing when opportunities arise, and the possibility of a senior services center. AARP defines a livable community as “one that is safe and secure. It offers choices in where to live and how to get around. Livable communities enhance personal independence, allow residents to remain in their homes and communities as they age, and provide opportunities for residents of all ages, ability levels, and backgrounds to engage fully in civic, economic, and social life.” Features include mixed-use zoning, safe and varied transportation options, and diversity of housing types. Livable communities also include public spaces that benefit everyone. They also provide access to essential businesses, such as grocery stores. Several Jamestown residents attended a statewide AARP conference on age-friendly communities a few years back and realized that the initiative could be a great fit for Jamestown. After the Town Council gave approval, the committee sprang into action, with the help of Bob Gerken, a local member of the N.C. AARP Triad Region Leadership Team. “The Livable Communities initiative gives us the opportunity to formalize partnerships and makes our work as it relates to older adults less piecemeal,” Rayborn said. “Rather than responding to senior residents’ needs and interests as one-off situations, those services will be integrated into each of our community efforts. We are confident that having a Livable Communities designation by AARP will give us the extra incentive and backing to better articulate the needs of older adults in Jamestown when strengthening and making new connections with local agencies.” She noted that many senior-targeted programs might exist of which the Town is not aware. CONTINUED FROM FRONT When auditioning to participate in the school’s choir, Lee learned that ECU was one of three schools in the state that offered a degree in music therapy. “I fell in love with music therapy and changed my major,” Lee said. “I was already at a school that taught it – it was like that was meant to be.” Lee began using cardio drumming at independent living facilities. But while attending a National Music Therapy conference, she learned about Drums Alive and saw how much more could be done with drumming. She contacted a Drums Alive master trainer to learn all the techniques and has since been using them with her work with seniors. “I love being up there in front of them,” Lee said. “I can see how engaged they are. Emotion is radiating from them, even from behind masks, which makes it a great experience for me as well.” Participants and volunteers at A Moment in Time liked the Drums Alive session so much, they hope to have Lee return for a future visit.
“Everyone enjoyed Randi’s drumming,” said Laura Gulledge, coordinator for A Moment In Time. “It didn’t matter if you got it right. It just mattered if you moved and had fun. Movement and socialization is so important to brain health. Our cafe tries to feed the souls of our participants and volunteers. For a moment, we can escape from the disease of dementia and reconnect with each other.”

CONTINUED FROM FRONT involved in the community through outreach.” During her last six years in Florida, Forlines also worked with a group of Karen people from Burma. “I fell in love with these people,” Forlines said. “After I retired and moved to High Point to be near family, I still wanted to work with them. I found out Friendly Avenue Baptist had a Karen ministry and talked to Bryan Bresson, pastor of its Karen church, about how I could help. He said they needed a citizenship class.” The rest, as the cliché goes, “is history.” Forlines has been helping to teach citizenship class ever since. To apply for citizenship, an immigrant must have legally lived in the United States for a minimum of five years (three if married) and have a green card. They also must be able to speak, read and write basic English. In class they learn 100 facts about the history, Constitution, Declaration of Independence and economy of the United States from the 1700s forward.

The United States Citizenship Immigration Service supplies a list of words that students also must study. The immigration test will include 10 questions from the 100 facts they have learned and applicants must demonstrate the ability to read a sentence and write one that is dictated to them. “Each week we teach five-eight questions, then break into small groups and practice going over them,” Forlines explained. “I give homework to help them practice.” Forlines and friends also help immigrants fill out their citizenship application forms, which are very detailed. “People take the class until they are ready to take the test,” Forlines acknowledged. “I encourage them to let me decide when that is. It could take months or years, depending on their speaking ability. The younger ones who have been to school here do well, but it is harder on the older ones.” The citizenship classes have had 82 people become United States citizens. when the early Quakers (Society of Friends) settled in the area around what is now Jamestown, they needed a place to worship. They established Deep River Friends Meeting in 1754 at what is now the corner of Penny Road and west wendover Avenue and buried their dead in a cemetery beside the meetinghouse. The site is listed on the national Register of Historic Places. Deep River Friends Meeting Cemetery is one of the oldest in Guilford County but there are no records to indicate when the cemetery was established. The actual number buried there is unknown but Mendenhall Homeplace Director Shawn Rogers estimates there could be over 1,000 in the old burying ground. The church’s website states, “The earliest Friends did not believe in marking graves, but occasionally a rough fieldstone was used, the deceased’s initials scratched on the surface. It is interesting to note that as this custom became more widespread and

elaborate, regulations for maintaining simplicity were established. An 1831 instruction states that stones were to be no higher than nine inches with only the initials of the deceased. by 1846 the instruction was relaxed to a height of 12 inches, with names, birth and death dates. The oldest section of the cemetery, known originally as the burying Ground, is largely free of grave markers.” “understandably, burial records for the cemetery are not complete,” Rogers said. “Keep in mind that many early burials were not recorded and some of the records have been lost to time. Deaths were often recorded in Quaker meeting minutes, but burials rarely were. Also consider that many early Quaker burials were unmarked, or marked with a simple fieldstone devoid of any identifying information. A number of fieldstones have been removed over the years, or have seemingly sunk below the ground, due to erosion and the effects of the freeze-thaw cycle.”

His physical resemblance and mannerisms are eerily similar to his dad, and any inconsistencies in personality can be chalked up to the character being 30 years younger. As a party appetizer, cheesiest is easiest By patti diamond divas on a dime As we catapult headfirst into party season, we’re often faced with a dilemma. What am I going to serve or bring to the party? I have the answer! Bake a wheel of brie. We all love easy, quick and inexpensive appetizers, and this one is always a huge hit. Whether the party is beer-keg casual or black-tie formal, it’s a proven fact — everybody loves cheese. Baked brie is especially nice in the colder months when warm and gooey sounds particularly inviting. Rich and creamy brie makes a simple, yet elegant appetizer, and is so versatile because it pairs perfectly with sweet or savory toppings. An 8-ounce wheel of brie costs around $5. Add a baguette or French bread (from the day-old rack if possible!), some crackers, slice an apple and you’ve got a sophisticated appetizer for four to six people for well under $10. This is so much better than a couple of bags of chips. Baking brie couldn’t be easier. Simply place the brie on a piece of parchment paper and score the top of the brie with a paring knife. Bake at 350 F for 15 minutes or until the cheese is soft and melted, then serve — ta-da! It’s delicious just like that. Another option is to top the brie with something sweet or savory, then bake it to melted perfection. Sweet ideas for toppings include any kind of jam, fruit compote, chutney, dried fruit, fresh berries, figs or even cranberry sauce.
Savory topping ideas include caramelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, olive tapenade, bacon, roast peppers, herbs and sauteed mushrooms. The creaminess of brie pairs beautifully with salty, crunchy nuts. Mix something sweet, something savory, something crunchy and you’ve got a delectable appetizer. If preparing brie at home is new to you, here are answers to some common questions: Is the white rind edible? Absolutely yes! While some prefer to remove it, it’s not necessary. Scoring the top rind of the brie helps it to be easily scooped up with the melty inner cheese after it is baked.
