About Town COMPILEd By NORMA B. dENNIS FIRE HYDRANT TESTING The Pinecroft Sedgefield Fire District began their semi-annual fire hydrant testing Oct. 1 and will continue this operation throughout the month. All hydrants in the Pinecroft Sedgefield Fire District will be tested to ensure they are operating properly and are able to produce the required water pressure when needed. This testing also includes all hydrants in the Town of Jamestown. Because the testing must be done during normal operating hours, it is impossible to know in advance just when or where the testing will take place in any specific area. Opening hydrants can sometimes cause a temporary discoloration of water in nearby homes. The discoloration is not harmful and can be cleared up by running the water for a few minutes. LOOSE-LEAF COLLECTION The Town will begin loose-leaf collection Oct. 26 and continue it through Feb. 26, 2021. This allows leaves to be collected at the roadside without bagging them. It will be done on a rotating system every three to four weeks. To take advantage of the loose-leaf collection: Rake leaves to the edge of the yard behind the curb. Remove sticks, rocks and other debris that could damage the Town’s equipment. The staff will discontinue the collection if debris is found in the leaf pile. Do not park vehicles on, in front of or near your leaves.
Halloween attractions adopt COVID precautions By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com WARNING: Enter our attraction along a dark, winding dirt road, surrounded by haunted woods. If you are brave, roll down your windows to take in the night’s stale air … but beware! From the moment you arrive on Kersey Valley property, you are fair game to each and every haunted creature residing here. You will encounter special effects of light, sound, smell, dense atmosphere, air pressure, and may come in contact with liquid substances. Leave your best pair of sneaks at home, but bring an extra pair of undies! Such is what visitors can expect during a visit to Spookywoods at Kersey
Valley Attractions. But although things are scary and spooky, there will be some differences this year due to COVID-19, both at Spookywoods and the popular Maize Adventure. It has been proven that COVID-19 is less likely to be contracted from outdoor attractions such as these than around people indoors. Kersey Valley’s websites offer a health and safety policies list at the top of the home page. The attractions will operate at 50 percent capacity this year
and guests must wear a mask. You might even see a ghost or ghoul in a mask. Temperatures will be tested and pre-screening questions asked upon entry. Management urges patrons to purchase tickets in advance online, remain in their car and join the “virtual queue” until contacted. To join the virtual queue, follow the directions on the card given to you from the parking attendant. Scan the QR code and await instructions on entering. If you purchase at the ticket booth on site you will be asked to return to your car and join the virtual queue line. But beware, tickets are limited by the hour and you may find the tickets sold out if SEE HALLOWEEN, PAGe 2
Planning Board tightens ideas for Castleton Village The Jamestown Planning Board continued discussions on Sept. 28 in another three-hour meeting about the plans for the proposed Castleton Village development along Guilford and Mackay roads. The discussions are prior to a vote to rezone several pieces of property for the development. “I feel like we’ve visited some topics quite a bit, and we probably are ready to move on,” said Planning Board chair Sarah Glanville. “We left off with architecture last time.” Jason Epley, whose company, Benchmark Planning in Charlotte, is working with the Town on an update to the Comprehensive Plan, returned to help guide the Planning Board in the process. Epley recalled several points important to what Jamestown wants in the development, including residential composition, residential architecture, bike and pedestrian usage, parks, public space, open space, commercial development, community impact and landscaping. The Board agreed that they would like to see a
variety of brick and stone facades in the design and emphasized there should not be an overuse of vinyl siding. Of course, the traditional brick sidewalks currently in the town should be used. The group wants all mechanical equipment buffered or hidden as much as possible. “If we try to keep the quality and the variety under control, that is our greatest concern,” said Eddie Oakley. As befitting an older town like Jamestown, several board members stated that porches would be a nice feature. “They give character to a home,” said Ed Stafford. Steve Monroe, who works with Aging in Place companies, stated that the older generation needs porches., and added that these types of homes sell fast. However, to add a porch would require a deeper setback from the road. On the subject of density, most in attendance agreed that the current lot sizes were too small. Enlarging the lots would decrease the density. “We need more land for these people,” said Sherrie Richmond. “We’re looking out for their future.” SEE vILLAgE, PAGe 2
Cedarwood Garden Club October Mailbox and Yard of the Month
The Cedarwood garden Club has chosen the October monthly awards for the neighborhood. The mailbox of the month is awarded to Ronnie and Cal Bryant, 100 Sagewood Road. Pink Begonias are surrounded with a border of slate in a landscaped garden. Nancy and Bob Harvey, 99 Fairidge Court, win the yard of the month. This yard has a lush green lawn edged perfectly with pine bark. An Autumn front door wreath completes the seasonal look. Congratulations to our “Cedarwood garden Lovers."
Thankful for cars
Automobiles may just be one of life’s most useful inventions. I remember my dad telling me it was an all-day trip by horse and wagon to visit relatives in nearby Randolph County. Now, with a car we can make day trips to the beach and back. And what a blessing to hop in one and drive to work, to our favorite restaurant, to visit friends or to go to the store for food and medicine. Now, I live only two miles from the nearest grocery store, so it could be conceivable to make that journey without a car. I could walk to the store, complete my shopping and

walk back home – maybe pulling my purchases behind me in a little red wagon. But anyone who knows me knows that is not going to happen. I would more likely be rooting in the nearby woods for nuts and berries

halloween continued from front you wait to purchase upon arrival. If you are part of a group, you may enter together, with a preferred maximum of eight people. Your group will not be mixed with others that are not part of your household or the social bubble you commonly are around. The first hour each night is reserved for high-risk guests, healthcare workers, first responders and the older population. The staff has completed the Count on Me NC program, a public health initiative that teaches participants how to keep others safe from COVID-19. Handwashing stations are available at the entrance, the midway and entrances of each section. The
staff clean high-touch areas on a regular basis. Spookywoods As if the pandemic is not scary enough, the management of Kersey Valley Attractions has gone out of its way to be even more creative this year. Like everyone else, the actors wear face masks, but the art department has integrated them into the actors’ faces so guests may not even be able to tell the actor is wearing a mask. Spookywoods, now in its 36th season, is nationally known as one of the country’s Top 10 Haunted Attractions. It all started by a dare between
teenagers to enter a farmhouse in 1985. A family of bats scared the boys and sparked the idea to create a haunted house. Over three decades later, Kersey Valley Spookywoods has expanded to become one of the nation’s largest haunted attractions with a year-round staff of builders and artists with a passion

ties, drive-by retirement recognitions, drive-by picnics, drive-by food collections for those in need, drive-by fundraisers, driveby food pickup from all types of restaurants and drive-by library services. We have even used our cars for drive-up veterinarian visits and drive-in church meetings. We can drive to our destination, get in line and see friends in their cars or standing by the wayside – at socially acceptable distances, of course. I, for one, will take advantage of my car and get in line to enjoy all the drive-by activities available to meet my physical needs and social pleasure. Perhaps we will meet at a drive-by, drive-up or drive-in. If so, don’t forget to wave.

Maize Adventure The theme for the Maize Adventure this year is a farm, with a barn and chickens outlined in the corn. Groups are asked to keep 30 seconds of walking space from those in front or behind. The tram is available this year, running around the Maize with a few spooky extra riders to ensure social distancing. The Maize Adventure is open from 11-6 Saturdays and 1-6 Sundays. Kersey Valley Attractions is located at 1615 Kersey Valley Road in Archdale. For more information, call 336-431-1700. For tickets, visit spookywoods.com and maizeadventure.com.

continued from front with any degree of physical prowess. One can travel across the entire country in a car if so desired. As useful as cars have become to our everyday lives, they have gained even more significance during the 2020 pandemic when social distancing is so important. They have provided a way for people to connect and be distant at the same time. Cars, and other vehicles, have become instruments of socialization. Without them we might have been limited to talking to our neighbors across the fence instead of expanding our view of the community at large. To get us through this time of “keeping our distance,” we have used cars for drive-by birthday par-
for Halloween that is sure to make you scream and laugh. Scary attractions include Film Noir, Murder of Crows, Sanitorium, The Seventh Seal, Stone Haven, The Torture Chamber, Willows Bog, Leon’s Chop Shop and more. Spookywoods runs thru Nov. 14 and is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Check the website for times. Age 12 and under not recommended. However, if your child is mature enough to understand the monsters only pretend to want to eat them, they are welcome. There are no refunds for leaving early.

An interesting point came up when members realized the house plans submitted did not fit the lot sizes submitted in the plan. The house renderings are wide while the lots are deep. Larger lots would allow space for larger garages and even garages on the side. Several said they did not like the idea of “garage homes” where the garage is the first thing you see when you drive up to an address. Oakley questioned whether Diamondback can fit the house plans on the lots and incorporate the changes suggested by the Board. Discussion then switched to the architectural style of the townhomes. “To me, the one-car garage makes little or no sense,” Oakley said. He referenced the new townhomes on Gannaway where the small one-car garage forces other cars into the street. Board member Dennis Sholl did not support the two-car garage concept, noting that often there is only one person living in the townhome. He added, however, he would like to see 12-foot-wide garages, large enough for a large SUV, with storage space on the sides. Additionally, driveways should be deep enough so a car parked in a driveway did not block sidewalks. The Board decided a variety of oneand two-car garages are needed. “Typically the double garages sell faster,” noted Stafford, who is a real estate agent. “With the information we got initially on a Planned Use Development
(PUD), we are supposed to be able to design it the way we think Jamestown should have it,” Richmond said. “We need to be very comfortable in saying what we want, in changes, in sizes, garages and everything.” “This is not to diminish the project,” Oakley said. “It’s to make it better. I want to see it to be a class act.” The number of attached units causes concerns for the Board, with a rendering presented five to six units together. Four units in one block is preferable. Stafford mentioned that six is the normal configuration. In the end, the Board said what is needed is a variety of styles, heights and plenty of green space, with the garage set farther back to align with the front door. Glanville is still concerned with the possible overcrowding of area schools, with potentially 348 school-age children in this development. The Board would like to see a variety of businesses in the commercial area, including restaurants, ice cream parlors, small shops, professional and medical services, a day care and more. “My hope is we can get our list of recommendations in order so that the developer [Diamondback Investments] can come back with what they have incorporated from our discussions and we can see where we are and soon start public comments,” Glanville said. The Planning Board urges citizens to contact them regarding concerns.
Meeting Oct. 12 The Planning Board will continue their discussions on Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. This meeting will move to the Council Chambers at Town Hall due to early voting in the Civic Center. Plans call for summarizing their comments regarding initial proposal. Then the floor will open for speakers. Since the Council Chambers is a much smaller room than the Civic Center and social distancing will be observed, speakers will be allowed to enter one at a time to speak. Anyone wishing to speak should line up outside the Council Chambers doors beginning at 6 p.m. An usher will escort individuals one at a time to the podium where they will give their name and address and will then have three minutes to address the Board related to the topic of the public hearing. The public comment period is not a time for dialogue with the Board and the Board may not respond to questions asked but will make a note of any concerns. Persons entering the building will be subject to a temperature check with a contactless thermometer before being ushered to the podium to present their comments to the Board. A people entering the building are expected to wear a face covering as well. Because of the limited space, there will not be public seating for the meeting. The meeting can be viewed live at www.youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC.

eating right can help fight breast cancer By ANgELA SHELF MEdEARIS tHe KItCHeN DIVA
the risk of invasive cancer. A natural substance in raw carrots called “falcarinol” can slow the growth of cancer cells. Falcarinol is inactivated by heat or cooking, so it is critical to eat raw carrots, too. A few apples a day may truly keep the breast-cancer surgeon away. Specifically, studies show that natural substances found in apples decrease the number of tumors, the size of tumors and tumor growth rates in animal models. The more apple extracts the animals were fed, the greater the reduction in cancer. Green tea consumption may reduce your relative breast cancer risk by more than 50%. Green tea is rich in potent “polyphenol” antioxidants that protect your DNA from damage and shortening, reduce inflammation, reduce estrogen and reduce breast tissue density. The recommended amount to consume is two to four cups per day, or you can take a green-tea supplement. Enjoy this Apple and Carrot Salad with a cup or glass of green tea, and you’ll incorporate three delicious cancer-fighting ingredients into your diet.
A pink ribbon is the symbol worn in October for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. Tragically, more than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die from it this year in America. Although breast cancer occurs mainly in women, men can get it too. Many people do not realize that men have breast tissue and that they can develop breast cancer. About 1,970 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men. About 390 men will die from breast cancer. New medical research strongly suggests that you can eat and live proactively to prevent breast cancer before it strikes. Current anti-breast-cancer medical efforts are aimed at critical early detection with mammograms. Early detection allows doctors to treat the cancer while it is still small and confined to the breast. We invite you to join your community as we show our support to everyone who has faced a cancer diagnosis. On Friday, October 9, we will light luminaria at Life Community Church in Jamestown at 7:30 PM. The event will be held to remember and honor the people in our lives who have faced cancer. This event will serve as a fundraiser for Relay For Life of Guilford County. Luminaria bags are available for purchase for $5 and you may dedicate a bag for a loved one by visiting www.relayforlife.org/guilfordnc. Craft-felted autumn acorns By dONNA ERICKSON DONNA'S DAY: CreAtIVe FAMILY FUN Felting “acorns” using fluffy natural wool is a relaxing and enjoyable fall activity for all ages. It’s especially suited for young children who like to get their hands in soapy water to shape and change the structure of the soft wool into dense felted wool balls. The material used for making the soft balls is called wool roving, available at some craft stores, yarn shops or online (resources below). It is wool that has been cleaned, combed and sometimes dyed. You’ll discover that the lovely colors are so inspiring, it’s hard to choose favorites. Use real caps from fallen acorns you’ve foraged from your yard or on nature walks for these stunning, artful creations. You’ll be gluing the felted acorn balls to the caps. For a variation, drill two tiny holes through the acorn cap and thread a string for a felted acorn necklace, make an ornament to hang on a tree branch, or hang several in
a windowsill. So many possibilities! Here’s the stuff you need for a 1-inch felted acorn: — a piece of 2-inch-by-6inch slightly stretched out wool roving — small bowl of hot water with a drop or two of liquid soap — hot glue gun or glue suitable for fabrics — a large acorn cap Here’s the fun, using a hands-on “wet felting” technique: 1. Roll up the first inch or so of the wool, then twist slightly and continue rolling it into a tight ball. Smooth the loose end over the ball. It will be about the size of a large cotton ball, but will become half the size as fibers eventually mesh. 2. Wet the ball with the soapy water. Toss it back and forth from hand to hand over the bowl while occasionally dipping it in the soapy water. (The soap changes the pH of the wool, and helps the fibers to open. The hotter the water, the faster it felts.) Be gentle, and

and pepper. Cover and let marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to meld and permeate the ingredients. 2. Place 1/2 cup of the salad on each avocado half. Sprinkle with apple cider vinegar. Serve chilled or at room temperature. Serves 4.
