Is another grocery store in the area’s future? By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrITer cab1hp@gmail.com
Could yet another grocery chain be coming to the Jamestown area? It’s been learned that the Greensboro and High Point city councils will hold a joint meeting Nov. 21 at 12:30 p.m. to consider an economic development project. The meeting will be held at the Guilford Technical Community College Center for Advanced Manufac-
turing, 6012 W. Gate City Blvd., just behind Sheetz. The public is invited to attend. The Greensboro City Council is considering offering an incentive to the Fresh Market for the creation of 53 new jobs. The incentive is not to exceed $301,000. This will also help the company retain the existing jobs and will include a capital investment by the Fresh Market of approximately $2 million. It is not clear whether High Point will also offer
an economic development incentive. The Fresh Market began in Greensboro in 1982 and has expanded to 160 stores in 22 states along the East Coast, including the two Greensboro locations and one in WinstonSalem. High Point’s Fresh Market closed several years ago. The company is looking to expand their Guilford County stores. When development was announced on the Grandover Village Shopping Center, speculation arose
that either the Fresh Market or Trader Joe’s would locate there, however Publix opened in the shopping center last week. It is believed that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners will hold a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. on the same day at the Old County Courthouse. No agenda was available at press time but the commissioners are expected to vote on the incentive package, which would see $106,000 in county funds going to the Fresh Market.

Some people might call food served at Arlene’s Restaurant comfort food – food that brings back warm memories of family gathered around the dinner table. Others would choose to label it soul food – cuisine associated with the African-American culture, especially in the southeastern United States. Arlene Clark, owner of Arlene’s Restaurant, simply calls it “Food for the Soul.” With such dishes as macaroni and cheese, pinto beans, collard greens, meat loaf and mashed potatoes – to name a few – as well as a signature dish of collard greens, pulled turkey and special spices in an egg roll, the food has comfort, soul and good taste written all over it. “Mac and cheese is one of the most asked-for foods we sell,” Clark said. “Everything we serve is made fresh.” Clark has been in the restaurant business for 42 years, beginning as a youth working with the fast-food industry. “All the women in my family enjoy cooking,” Clark said. “I love people and consider working with them a ministry. It was natural to combine my love of cooking and serving others. “You need to have a passion for it to make it work. I love what I do.” Clark owned Arlene’s Kitchen in Greensboro, but opted to close it so she could expand her business. In addition to her new restaurant at 5002-F High Point Road in the Hunt Village Shopping Center, she is opening an event center called Arlene’s Place two doors away, which will feature live entertainment such as comedy, music and open-mic night. “It is not a club, but a place where local entertainers can have the opportunity to showcase their talent,” Clark said. “The restaurant will cater food to the customers at the event center. There is also a large room that can be used for business or other types of meetings.” Gregory Matthews, the head chef at Clark’s other location will be joining her at Arlene’s Restaurant. “He does most of the cooking,” Clark acknowledged. “I enjoy cooking breakfast the most.” The restaurant seats about 25, but much of Clark’s business is handled through carryout. She is connected with Uber Eats, Grubhub, Postmates and DoorDash, companies that pickup up food orders and deliver. Arlene’s Restaurant will be open Monday-Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about Arlene’s Restaurant or Arlene’s Place, call 336-285-8081.
At that location, deputies found a female deceased, having sustained traumatic injuries in an apparent homicide. The names of those involved have not been released. The investigation is ongoing and no further information was available at press time.

“Instead of offering a myriad of brands in every category, our stores offer carefully curated selections that are top-quality and best prices. So your precious time is not spent sifting through endless versions of products you don’t want. “We’re also continuing the Lidl tradition of offering new favorites from all over the world, keeping you looking forward to what you’ll find next.” Fresh produce and flowers greet customers when entering, just before delicious smells waft out of the bakery section. Lidl has many private label brands, from organic, to gluten free, to a preferred section of global
specialties. Approximately 90 percent of the stock consists of private label items. Lidl stores offer more than traditional grocery items. Shoppers can find appliances, tools, Christmas decorations and wrapping paper, bathing suits, yoga mats and more during each season. Bring your own bags
when shopping at Lidl or you can purchase bags in the store. This helps keep the company’s costs down. This is the German company’s fifth store in the area. It will be open 8 a.m.10 p.m. seven days a week. It announced in May that it plans to open 25 new stores on the East Coast by next spring. The name is pronounced “LEE-dul.”

Jobs and careers for military spouses By FREddy gROVES VeTerANS POST If you are debating whether to re-up and one of your concerns is your spouse’s employment opportunities, perhaps the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) program will help you decide. There are currently 350,000 job listings for military spouses on the MSEP website. In a partnership with 390 employers, the Department of Veterans Affairs has expanded opportunities as part of its Department of Defense MSEP program. Those employers have committed to hire, promote, recruit and retain military spouses in portable jobs. At this point they have hired over 134,000 military spouses. Portable means you can
take your skills with you, possibly to one of the many other employers in the program, should you need to relocate. There are big names in the list, but not just retailers or convenience stores. Also included are organizations with community networks that provide career resources and mentoring, and federal agency partners. The program is part of the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program that aims to reduce the horrible 25% wage gap that military spouses face. It offers career guidance, education, resources, tools, training, licensing and more. LIFeSTYLeS Place card puzzles add to Thanksgiving fun By dONNA ERICKSON DONNA’S DAY: CreATIVe FAMILY FUN Place cards are an indispensable addition to a Thanksgiving meal. They’re a little like croutons on a favorite soup, because they add style and pizzazz. They can even be whimsical! This year, let the kids’ inspirations for artful place cards enhance your Thanksgiving table decor. Long after you’ve ladled the gravy over the mashed potatoes for seconds and then thirds, your kids will remember the special contribution they made to the festivities. Here are two ideas: Simple Place Cards Homemade place cards can be as easy as cutting strips of nice paper or cardstock into 1-1/2-by-1-inch strips and writing out each person’s name with a special pen. Decorate by drawing a simple portrait of the person to the side of the name, or add Thanksgiving-themed stickers. Set them on each plate over a folded napkin, or insert them in standard place-card stands. (Tip: Larger index cards give young children more space to write and draw.) Puzzle Place Cards Make each puzzle place card out of cardboard, construction paper or craft foam sheets. Draw and cut out the shape of an object with a Thanksgiving theme, such as a pilgrim hat, an ear of corn or a pumpkin pie. Paint or color the shape with markers if you wish. Make a different Thanksgiving design or symbol for each place setting.
Moments In Time By THE HISTORy CHANNEL * On Dec. 4, 1783, George Washington, commanding general of the Continental Army, informs his officers that he will be resigning his commission and returning to civilian life. In 1789, he was coaxed out of retirement and elected as the first president of the United States.
* On Dec. 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers take off from Florida on a routine three-hour training mission near the Bahamas. Two hours later, the planes disappeared. Mariner aircraft, sent to locate the planes, also disappeared. No trace of the men or aircraft were ever found.
Cut out a portion of the shape, which will be a puzzle piece. The cutout could be obvious, such as a feather on a turkey, or more complicated, like a random wavy shape typical of a traditional puzzle. Set the Thanksgiving table with a place card at each setting, minus the cutout. When guests arrive, put children in charge of giving a missing place-card piece to each guest. When they meet Grandfather at the door, they’ll be bursting with excitement. Will he find his place at the table? Kids love to know a special secret that grown-ups have to figure out! Family feud over dog may ruin Thanksgiving By Sam mazzotta paw’s corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year at Thanksgiving dinner, my dog “Aker” nipped at one of my sister-in-law’s children as they played in the living room. They had opened the door to my room and let Aker out without my knowledge, and when she got caught between a couple of roughhousing kids and hurt, she reacted the way any dog would. Now my sister-in-law is refusing to bring her family to dinner this year unless I get rid of Aker. What would you do? — Janice, Lansing, Michigan DEAR JANICE: I’d enjoy a quiet dinner with no kids around to torture my dog. Getting rid of Aker is an absolute no-go. If you still want your sister-inlaw and her kids to come to dinner, then let her know that you have ground rules about interacting with Aker. The children are not to let Aker out of your
room, where you have put her so she won’t be stressed out by all the activity and strange people in the house. Further, it is your sister-in-law’s responsibility to make sure her kids behave. If they can’t behave, then they shouldn’t be allowed over. The holidays are a stressful time for pets: Parties, dinners and visits from strangers all contribute to heightened anxiety. Add lots of rich, tempting food on the countertop — some of which can make pets very sick, like chocolate desserts, guacamole or grapes -– and a home can be downright dangerous. Aker shouldn’t suffer or be abandoned just to make one family member happy. I’m very serious about this. If this family tiff can’t be resolved in a way that protects your dog from being hassled, then inform the in-laws that they will need to make other plans. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
Democrats shouldn't blame Latin By Rich lowry If the impeachment effort isn’t taking the nation by storm, the Democrats have an answer — blame it on Latin. The use of a Latin term, quid pro quo, is now thought to be a damper on the impeachment cause because it sounds complex and technical. Latin is one of the great legacies of the Roman Empire, influencing languages across Europe and giving us scientific, medical and legal terms that heretofore had been thought perfectly fitting. That was before Democrats felt they needed a more emotive phrase to characterize President Donald Trump’s conduct in the Ukraine controversy, and especially one that denotes a more grave offense. Democratic Rep. Jim Himes, from Connecticut, made the case on “Meet the Press”: “When you’re trying to persuade the American people of something that is really pretty simple, which is that the president acted criminally and extorted, in the way a mob boss would extort somebody, a vulnerable foreign country, it’s probably best not to use Latin words to explain it.” There’s a lot to unpack here. The first problem is that Ukraine is not nearly as simple, or as dramatic, as Democrats first hoped. It doesn’t have something memorable and inherently attention-grabbing at its heart, like the Watergate break-in or the Clinton-Lewinsky affair. It involved a pressure campaign on the Ukrainians that — once examined closely — was complicated, ambiguous and highly contested within the administration. No matter what word is applied to it — even the plainest, non-Latinate English word — this isn’t going to change. Another problem is that it wasn’t criminal. Impeachment doesn’t require a crime, but it helps. The best card that Republicans had against Bill Clinton in their impeach-
ment push in the 1990s was that he had flagrantly violated the law by perjuring himself repeatedly. Democrats wish they had Trump on similar violations. In their absence, they are attempting to create the impression of rank criminality, via metaphor. This is why they want to shift to the terms “extortion” or “bribery” — and throw in references to mob bosses. It can’t be that squeezing a foreign power is a criminal act, though, or every American president would be guilty of crimes in the course of the horse-trading of routine statecraft. What makes the Ukraine matter different, and blameworthy, is that he wanted an investigation that touched on Joe and Hunter Biden. This was improper because it involved a mingling of presidential powers and U.S. resources with a goal that was, largely, personal and political in nature. Once we are talking about an improper use of lawful powers, then things are less lurid and more complicated than a mafialand crime. And once you factor in that the Ukrainians ultimately got their funding without investigating anyone or announcing an investigation into anyone, the picture is even less clear. Impeachment and removal of a president requires a national consensus to get the two-thirds vote to convict in the Senate. This is why the Democrats need more than wrong and troubling and worthy of congressional investigation, a standard they’ve amply met; they need shocking to the conscience, which they aren’t going to meet on anything like the current universe of facts. This is the political reality — in English, Latin or any other language. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. ©2019 by King Features Synd., Inc.

Strange But True By SAMANTHA WEAVER * It was 19th-century German poet Johann Peter Eckermann who made the following sage observation: “Invention requires an excited mind; execution, a calm one.” * Those who study such things say that if you want to know if someone is likely to keep your secrets, you should look at their birth order in the family. First-born children tend to be better at keeping secrets than kids born later.
* You may be familiar with the famous scene from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” in which the title character picks up the skull of an erstwhile acquaintance and declares, “Alas, poor Yorick!” It’s an icon of the stage — and the screen, with more than 50 known film versions of the play. Of course, it’s also been published too many times to count, and in too many different formats. One in particular stands out, though; in 2009, Czech bookbinders and artists Jan and Jarmila Soboda created their own unique edition. It’s a tiny script tucked inside a plastic skull housed in a small metal casket with a hinged lid.

Healthy Living Daughter got measles despite vaccination By KEITH ROACH, M.d. TO YOUr GOOD HeALTH
Healthy holiday fare By ANgELA SHELF MEdEARIS KITCHeN DIVA November is traditionally about family, friends, food, feasting and abundance. While it may seem almost impossible to maintain healthy habits during the holiday season, the Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter has come up with some simple steps on ways to enjoy the festivities without putting on weight. Choose healthy habits this holiday season and do without the regrets later!
What’s for Dessert? Tufts does not suggest skipping dessert, but offers some ways to make a wise choice. For example, instead of three different pies, have just one favorite and serve it with a fresh fruit salad. To make it more festive, make the fruit into a parfait. Strawberry and kiwi slices layered with low-fat yogurt make a delicious and decorative finale to any meal.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is 4 years old and has, in the past five days, developed measles. She was vaccinated at 9 months and has been treated with antibiotics, Tylenol and vitamin A supplements. What concerns me is that she is now experiencing seizures, even without a fever. They are not grand mal seizures, but simple ones. They have me worried. What can I do? — G.A. DEAR G.A.: Measles remains a serious disease in many parts of the world, with 90,000 deaths reported in 2016. Even in industrialized nations, there have been outbreaks involving tens of thousands of people infected. Vitamin A supplementation may be of value in those who are deficient, and Tylenol can help keep the fever down, reducing the risk of febrile seizures. The antiviral drug ribavirin sometimes is used, though without clear evidence of effectiveness. Otherwise, there are no effective antibiotics or other treatments for measles. When seizures occur in a child with measles in absence of fever, it can indicate a complication called encephalitis — inflammation of the brain. Children also may experience nausea and vomiting, and they usually have a headache. Confusion and sleepiness are other common symptoms. The diagnosis can be confirmed by an evaluation of the fluid around the brain, the cerebrospinal fluid, which is sampled via a needle inserted into the lower back. Confirmed encephalitis with measles is treated with steroids. This reduces the risk of permanent brain damage from the infection. Even so, 25% of children may be left with some impairment, including epilepsy. Unfortunately, vaccination at 9 months is not adequate protection. Children’s immune systems may not be able to fully respond to the vaccine so early. Children are recommended to have the measles vaccine at 12-15 months and again at 4 to 6 years in the United States. In countries where risk of measles mortality remains high, children are vaccinated at 9 months, then again at 15-18 months. During an outbreak, a dose may be given as early as 6 months old, in addition to the other two doses. DEAR DR. ROACH: I get horrible fever blisters when I go on any tropical vacation and am exposed to lasting sun. These blisters develop on my lower lip. I have tried sunscreen, but nothing has worked. On my most recent trip, the blisters appeared on the final day and took nearly three weeks to heal. It’s painful and horribly embarrassing. Is there anything I can do? Should I see my dermatologist? — S.A. DEAR S.A.: The sun can cause many kinds of skin reactions. In some people, the light itself causes the problem (these reactions are called photodermatoses). In others, the sun causes a reaction in combination with exposure to a particular substance. Sometimes, it’s a fruit, especially limes. In people with blisters around the mouth, I think of mangoes, especially if you are enjoying them in the tropics. Some skin diseases just get worse in the sun: Lupus is the classic example, but there are many others (my textbook lists about 50, some quite rare). A dermatologist is indeed the person to see. In the meantime, wear sun-protective clothing on your next tropical vacation, and consider a blocking sunscreen like zinc oxide in the areas where the blistering has occurred in the past. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
