Annexation decision postponed Although it was on the agenda, there was no vote by the Jamestown Town Council on Nov. 16 regarding D.R. Horton’s request for annexation of the property known locally as the Johnson farm. “It is not ripe for discussion,” Planning Director Matthew Johnson told the Council before asking that the public hearing be continued. The reason is that
the potential rezoning of that property has not come before the Council. “As a landowner, you have a lot riding on it and you don’t want annexation to occur [first],” Johnson told the Jamestown News the following morning. The Planning Board approved rezoning from Agricultural (AG) to Planned Unit Development (PUD) for the property Nov. 8. D.R. Horton, the current owner, asked for a development agreement before any work begins,
New fire truck dedicated in push-in ceremony by carol brooks FreelanCe Writer cab1hp@gmail.com Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department will hold a traditional “push-in” ceremony for a new fire truck at the Jamestown station on Nov. 30. “This is a traditional ceremony,” said Chief Derek Carson. “Many of our firefighters and members, as well as elected officials will be in attendance. This is no small feat because a fire truck could weigh from 19-30 tons when full. “When we place a new truck into service, we push the fire truck in to the bay for the first time. This is a tradition that dates back over 100 years to a time before fire trucks were motorized. In those days, fire departments operated
with horse-drawn equipment. After returning from a call, firefighters would have to push the equipment back in to the fire station after disconnecting it.” The horses could not easily back the equipment into the station. Some volunteer fire departments also have a “wet down” where the new truck is sprayed with water from other departments or from the truck that was being replaced. This tradition apparently stems from the late 1800s when fire equipment was washed down following a fire, making it ready for the next call. The dedication and pushin ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. at the station on Guilford Road behind Town Hall. The public is invited to attend, including children.

including annexation. (See Jamestown News, Nov. 17, “Board approves rezoning to PUD”.) Johnson said crafting a development agreement is a tremendous amount of work, involving not only the Town of Jamestown staff, but also D.R. Horton representatives, Jamestown’s Land Use Attorney Tom Terrell, Town Attorney Beth Koonce and others. It could take several months. With the holidays fast approaching and people out of town, Johnson does
not believe this is a good time to present the rezoning issue to the Council. “We will work together to make sure Jamestown gets the best we can,” Johnson said. Interim Town Manager Dave Treme told the Planning Board, “We tell the developer what we want.” Several people spoke during the public hearing, but Photo courtesy Town of Jamestown the annexation petition was bob Gerken, local aarP representative, presents the continued until the Dec. certificate signifying Jamestown is now a member 21 Town Council meeting. of the aarP network of age-Friendly states and communities. councilmember rebecca rayborn, see PosTPoned, PaGe 2 right, leads the committee.
Meeting needs in the community by norMa b. dennis FreelanCe Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com Many people have probably heard of “paint by numbers” but the Jamestown Rotary Club starts each meeting “singing by numbers.” “Let’s sing number 27,” said Martin Senell who leads the group in it opening song feast. There are no books or printed words, only old familiar ditties and the smiling Rotarians readily join in. Fellowship is a large part of the weekly meetings, but members take the Rotarian four-way test of all they say and do seriously: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Club members also are serious about helping the community. To do this, Jamestown Rotary sponsors two major fundraisers – an annual horse show they have hosted for 60

Drug lab found in Adams farm apartment by carol brooks FreelanCe Writer cab1hp@gmail.com Adams Farm Parkway was blocked by police for several hours Nov. 17 as Greensboro Police officers responded to a report of an “unknown material” outside an apartment unit. A resident of the Advenir at Adams Farm, a gated community, contacted the department earlier in the day. Police arrived around 8:45 a.m. and the road was shut down between Hilltop Road and Autumn Woods Drive around 2:30 p.m. The resident also reported strange odors coming from one apartment, resulting in the arrival of a Hazmat team. Police discovered what they termed “a clandestine laboratory” to make drugs. Greensboro Police did not

scouts care for flags used on graves of veterans by norMa b. dennis FreelanCe Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com For years the Jamestown Veterans Association, with help from Boy Scout Troop 17 have placed flags on the graves of veterans at Guilford Memorial Park for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. This November, the Ragsdale High School JROTC also participated in the project.
Placing 3,000 flags on the graves of veterans throughout the Park is a bit more complicated than it might first appear. On the weekend of Nov. 6 the three groups put the flags on the graves, then collected each a week later. The weather can take a toll on the flags, however, and to make sure they can be stored properly for the next occasion all 3,000 flags must be completely dried before being boxed and put away.
“We use screen wire installed below the deck at our house to hold them for a few days until they are dry,” explained Danny Priddy, whose son Edwin is a member of the Boy Scout troop. “The project is really a good history lesson for the boys as they see the graves of people who have served in the military at different times and in different places. I think the boys get more out of doing the project than they give.”

With the inevitable development of the former Johnson property, now owned by D.R. Horton Co., many people were concerned about fire protection for that area. The Town Council questioned whether Station 46 in Jamestown on Guilford Road should move closer to that area. Station 23 is on Mackay Road, slightly closer to the property than Station 46. Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department, which operates Station 46, teamed with Beacon GIS for a study to determine if the station should move. The answer was the “current station locations can serve the Johnson property adequately.” Jamestown’s Station 46 is approximately 1.25 miles from the property and Station 23 is approximately threefourths of a mile. PSFD has a response time of four minutes and these distances fall within that window. Several other stations, including those of High Point and Greensboro, could also serve the area. Beacon GIS studied the impact on both stations, workload, response capability, ISO insurance rating and possible relocation. Strangely, if Station 46 should move, Beacon GIS suggested the best place would be on East Main Street – near the underpass. Response from that location

The next step is to plan for expansions at the current locations. Station 46 in Jamestown was constructed for a smaller staff than now serves the station. The Jamestown and Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Departments merged in 2003 and PSFD currently operates out of five stations covering 52 sq. miles, with a population of 27,000.

ContinueD From Front any donation can be combined with others to provide as much food as possible. “You can specify a family you would like it to go to or we will find one,” Long said. “We are partnering with local organizations and police departments to identify families in need. If you cannot buy a box, but know of someone who needs one, you can tell us about that.” Orders for Blessing Boxes to be delivered for Christmas should be made by Dec. 17. Call 336-781-0044 or email longlifemealprep@gmail.com. Because the project has increased in size, volunteers also are needed to deliver the Blessing Boxes.
The Long Life Nutrition kitchen where all the food is prepared is located at 707 W. Main St. in the stand-alone building in the front of Jamestown Center. Because the business has been so successful, the office, cooling facility and shipping area was moved to the back building into Suite B and the company is in the process of expanding that area. “I could never imagine we would be where we are today,” Long said. “We have been highly blessed and want to give back. What we have to give is food.”

Twist, shape and bake healthy bread bears By donna erickson Donna's Day: Creative Family Fun Baking bread is just plain fun when your preschoolers shape prepared dough into adorable bear shapes. Toss in simple math along the way too, as your pintsize bakers divide the dough into halves, fourths and even sixths to form the bear’s arms, legs and snout. They’ll watch the dough rise before their eyes, and they’ll love “painting” the bears with an egg wash before you pop them in the oven. Serve them warm, drizzled with some honey from a little pot for a memorable afternoon treat.
