Sedgefield’s Adamsleigh finally sells By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Those attending the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club are always distracted from play on the 14th hole. The reason is the imposing, and partially hidden, mansion off Alamance Road, roughly surrounded by holes 12-14 along Alamance Road and the tee on No. 15. The house itself looked to be in good shape, but the outbuildings and grounds left a lot to be desired because the property had been unoccupied and for sale since before the tournament returned to Sedgefield Country Club in 2008. But the 2019 tournament goers will see an entirely different side of the site because Furnitureland South’s Jason Harris and his wife Jennifer are the new owners of Adamsleigh. “I think I’m a little crazy,” Harris said last week.

The family, which includes five children, have lived in the same home in High Point for 25 years and had been looking for something different. Harris and his brother Jeff had looked at Adamsleigh as an investment for several years, but something changed in Jason’s mind this year and he made an offer himself, at $2.4 million, quite lower than the asking price that has been as high as $6 million. “I had heard that the grandkids who now own the property were really wanting to sell it so I made an offer. I was really surprised they accepted,” Harris said. “I think they were ready for someone else to take it on. “It’s just a beautiful piece of land and property. It’s a great location.” The sale went trough in early November and Harris has spent that time hiring workers to remove a half-mile of chain link fence and clear the vegetation, in the process uncovering a stream, pond, waterfall and see Adamsleigh, page 3

Holiday vacation begins retirement for Greensboro Beautiful director By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com

The Cedarwood Garden Club Holiday Decorations

The Cedarwood Garden Club has selected the Holiday Decoration Awards for the community. Our neighbors go to great lengths decorating for the holidays and it is always difficult to choose winners. (Top left) The Best Decorated Door is awarded to Selena Rogers, 106 Crest Hill Rd. (Top right) The Holiday Mailbox to Misty and Preston Burnette, 503 Fairidge Drive. (Bottom left) Meredith and Ron Chandler, 108 Sagewood Road win the Best Christmas Display Award. (Bottom left) Congratulations to Allison and Cam Tally, 106 Cottonwood Drive for being chosen for the Best Traditional Decorations.

As the holidays are winding down, many people throughout the Triad are preparing to return to work. Kathy Cates has no such plans however. After 30 years as executive directive of Greensboro Beautiful Inc., Cates has officially retired. “It is time,” the Jamestown resident said as she anticipated Dec. 21 – her last day on the job. Cates, who has a degree in non-profit management from Salem College, had worked with several nonprofit organizations, including the Eastern Music Festival, before getting the position of City Beautiful Director with the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. The opportunity to network, a review of the past year’s events, a preview of 2019 possibilities and good food were all part of the agenda at the Jamestown Business Association’s annual Christmas luncheon Dec. 14. Representatives from local businesses met in the Jamestown Town Hall community room for a relaxing, but informative meeting to conclude a year filled with activity. Some of the main events JBA sponsored for the community in 2018 were “Movie Nights in the Park.” It also held fundraisers for non-profits and supported events held by other organizations and the town. Most recently, JBA volunteers assisted the Jamestown Rotary Club with its annual Christmas parade. For the first time in the history of the parade, recognition for the Best Float and Best Car were presented to participants. Jamestown Mayor Lynn Montgomery and council members, who lead the parade, took time to review all the parade entries and select the winners. Best float was presented to Mitchell Grove United Methodist Church, and Best Car to Seniors Helping Seniors. These

An invitation from North Carolina’s coast BY NC PReSS ASSOCIATION

The holidays are a special time for families in North Carolina to gather and look ahead to the New Year with anticipation and enthusiasm. It’s also a time when we reflect on the past year including memorable highlights and challenges. As North Carolinians we have much to be thankful for, but many of our families, neighbors and communities in the paths of Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael were severely impacted this fall. Collectively, we say thank you to so many of you for your support. North Carolinians are resilient. From the beautiful coastline in the East to the towering mountains in the West, North Carolinians are known for strong comebacks and moving forward. As leaders of the travel industry along the coast, we want to assure you that significant progress has been made to make sure visitors can return to the coastal places they love. Our out-of-state visitors are special guests to us all, but many of them who heard the national news during the storms are unaware of how far we’ve come since.

We’ve learned from recent research conducted by Visit North Carolina that only 14 percent of potential out-of-state visitors believe North Carolina’s coast is back to normal. Even some North Carolinians are unaware of how far we’ve come. In most instances, our hotels, vacation rentals, attractions, recreational outfitters, restau-

rants, retail shops, golf courses and more are already welcoming visitors back, and others will certainly be back to normal in time for the popular spring and summer travel seasons. We recognize many North Carolinians dedicate a portion of their time together during the holidays to begin planning fam-

ily vacations for the coming year. The tourism economy is vital to our region, our citizens and the quality of life we all cherish. The speed of our recovery is largely dependent on the pace with which travelers return to visit our communities throughout the state. We encourage you to plan a visit to North Carolina’s beautiful and distinctive barrier island coastline to enjoy what many families make an annual tradition. And with our state’s rich diversity of landscapes, history, culture and activities, please consider exploring North Carolina first for all your leisure travel. We look forward to welcoming you soon. Snow globe holds memories of 2018

BY DONNA eRICKSON doNNa’S daY: creatiVe familY fuN

There’s something magical about a snow globe. Who can resist shaking a liquid-filled decoration to watch it “snow”? I know families that collect them on their summer vacations, and on occasion they give them a good shake, turn them upright and then smile with the memories. Now you can make your own to commemorate something special you did in 2018. Reminisce with your kids about activities your family enjoyed this past year, and then make a memory snow globe using a small waterproof object to represent the activity or event. Here’s how: First, you want to have a vision for your scene and how it will be contained. Will you need a little jar, fat jar or skinny jar? A tall jam jar might accommodate that plastic bear figure as a reminder of a camping trip at a national park. A

Hanes

baby-food jar would make a perfect home for a little rubber starfish to represent the sea life you observed at an aquarium. It’s all up to you and your imagination. Step 1: Fill the jar with water and shake to test the lid for tightness. Pour the water out, remove the paper label and let it dry completely. Step 2: Choose a clean waterproof toy, game piece, travel souvenir or trinket to inhabit the imaginary world. Place it temporarily inside the lid and lower the jar down over it, just to make sure it fits and allows enough space for the “snow” to fall when complete. An adult should glue the object on the inside of the lid with water-resistant glue, such as aquarium sealant from your local pet store. Let dry 24 hours. Step 3: Fill the jar almost to the top with baby oil, or use distilled water with a few drops of glycerin added to the water. Sprinkle glitter or waterproof

LINEBERRY -Since 1919

confetti into the liquid. An adult should apply waterresistant glue to the outside grooves of the jar rim and carefully screw on the lid. Stand the jar with lid end up to dry for 24 hours. Gather your kids around and shake your 2018 memory globe. Then hold still and watch. Grandparent Tip: Enjoy a “crafting fest” with your grandchildren and let each one make a memory globe with objects that represent something you did together, such as a fishing trip, a book you read, a movie you saw or a recipe you cooked up. Talk about the memory as you create. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. GUILFORD MEMORIAL PARK

DEAR DR. ROACH: I wonder why you never talk about holistic measures to prevent illnesses, such as cancer. I just read an article by an oncologist who said there are certain anti-cancer supplements that work, including vitamin D, magnolia extract and artichoke extract, all of which have been shown in laboratory studies to kill a variety of cancer cells, including colon, breast and liver cancers, and leukemia. Artichoke extract also contains cynarin, which decreases inflammation. Other compounds that can reduce cancer growth are black cumin seed oil and bee propolis, which is rich in caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), chrysin and cinnamic acid — compounds that affect cancer genes. Studies show that they reduce the growth of many cancers, including colon, prostate and kidney. I’ve also read about the powerful effects that simple seasonings have on cancer cells: black pepper, sage and oregano. My question to you is: Why isn’t this blasted all over the news media, and why don’t physicians who can access this information tell it to their patients? — V.A. DEAR V.A.: The therapies you mention are termed “complementary” or “alternative” treatments, specifically “herbal treatments.” Holistic medicine, on the other hand, aims to treat the entire person — physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Holistic medicine ought to be a goal for all providers, since health consists of much more than mere absence of physical disease. While a physician can help with some of these aspects, it is difficult or impossible for one person to be expert in helping a person meet all goals of wellness, which is why collaborative care is so important. With respect to the herbal treatments you mention, and others like them, it is my opinion that these have potential to

help treat some kinds of cancer. However, I am quite convinced, after reading many studies, that none of them is completely effective at preventing or curing cancer. Compounds can be very effective at killing cancer cells in a laboratory, but that is very different from killing cancer cells in a person at a level that’s achievable without toxicity. That’s why they aren’t on the news media — they aren’t a cure, and haven’t been proven definitively helpful. If that changes, I will be among the first to spread the news. Where I believe alternative therapies have the most potential in cancer is in combination with traditional therapies: helping people feel better through chemotherapy and radiation. Some herbals, like turmeric, have solid data showing benefit in combination with chemotherapy in treating some cancers. However, finding an oncologist who has expertise in alternative treatment might not be easy. Similarly, finding an alternative medicine provider who knows enough about cancer and chemotherapy to be of value to both the patient and the oncologist isn’t easy. There are some centers where both traditional and complementary therapies are used, and where the patient’s entire care team is aware of all the treatments a patient is getting. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Council hears bids for bridge construction By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

While December is a busy month for many, the Jamestown Town Council slows down a bit to enjoy the season. Business is still conducted, however, as was evidenced in the Council’s Dec. 18 meeting. The item was listed under “old business” but the information presented on the East Fork Bridge project was definitely new business. After months of bid requests, delays and re-bid requests, Public Services Director Paul Blanchard presented construction bids from four companies, North State Environmental Inc., Eagle Wood Inc, Crowder Construction Company, and Smith-Rowe LLC. North State was the low bidder at $1,488.226. “The bids were higher than the estimated cost of $1,316,030 and higher than the currently available funding of $1,200,000,” Blanchard said. “Based on the low bid, the project has a funding deficit of $288,226.” Blanchard outlined a few options for available funding sources, including a federal grant of $960,000 and a previous NCDOT grant of $240,000. He then told the Council he has a verbal commitment from NCDOT to fund the

remaining $288,226. He is waiting for a written commitment before moving forward and believes that will happen soon. The Council praised Blanchard for receiving the verbal commitment from NCDOT and will consider a resolution awarding the contract to North State Environmental and contracts for approval at the Jan. 15 meeting. The initial bids for the longanticipated project came in more than 10 percent over the engineer’s estimates in September. Consultation with the N.C. Department of Transportation took a while to iron out details regarding closing East Fork Road for a short period of time. During discussions, however, Blanchard was able to negotiate some cost-saving design changes. Blanchard said the Lydia/East Main Street sidewalk project is also in the plans for 2019 and it is possible both projects could be constructed concurrently. He does not have a timetable in place for construction to begin, however. The Council unanimously approved a new Water Shortage Response Plan following a public hearing in which no one spoke for or against the proposal. Blanchard said this is an update to a previous plan and some of the changes reflect using the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority facil-

ities as the primarily source of water. Some enforcement items will now be controlled by PTRWA lake levels instead of City of High Point capacities. Should the water level at the reservoirs reach critical levels or other emergencies arise, Jamestown’s town manager has the authority to implement temporary emergency procedures. In other business, the Council recognized Kevin Hege upon his retirement as Director of Sports for the Jamestown Youth League after 17 of years. The resolution noted that Hege “has had a positive impact on children involved in JYL by encouraging them to participate in physical activity, utilizing team building, and promoting social opportunities.” Mayor Lynn Montgomery thanked Jeff Greeson, operations manager, for the hard work his staff did clearing the streets following the snow storm. Greeson said they worked 24 hours straight. Blanchard stated that 800 of the town’s 1,300 new recycling carts have been delivered. There have been a few glitches in the citizens’ use of the carts, however, with some being used for regular household garbage and not recycling. Staff believes these problems will be resolved soon. November revenue at James-

This is a result of eight more bad weather days this year for a total of 14. Rounds played were down 228, which led to $2,797 less revenue. Golf shop inventory sales were up $313, however. Expenses were up 30 percent. The main reason was that the town switched from weekly to bi-weekly payrolls Jan.

Adamsleigh continued from front overgrown structures like a gazebo and boathouse. He’s not certain exactly how he wants to develop the 13-acre property and hasn’t ruled out demolition of the buildings, renovate the house, building a new home for himself or even subdividing the property. He might even turn part of it into an entertainment venue or bed and breakfast. “I’m almost certain it’s not in the cards for us to renovate that home and move in it,” Harris said. “It’s just not the style we would want to live in. “Another option is to try to preserve a lot of the features of the home and integrate them into a new home.” Now that the vegetation has been cleared, Harris said people stop their car and look in. The house is visible now. “It’s been nice to see the reaction,” he said. “People are fascinated with this. I’ve never had so many people contact me,” Some are even interested in purchasing part of the property if the family decides to subdivide. Others want to see inside the house. “Lots of people have a lot of appreciation and respect for the history that’s there and the uniqueness in the com-

munity. That’s not something that was really front and center for me when we made the purchase but I want to make sure that whatever we do, we’re respectful of the history and the architecture that’s there.” Harris and his family are planning on taking their time and decide just what is right for them to do with Adamsleigh. The 1930 15,000-square-foot Renaissance-inspired English Tudor house – with 33 rooms, 11 bedrooms and 11 full baths – was built for High Point’s John Hampton Adams, known as Hamp and co-founder of AdamsMillis Hosiery. It features a spiral staircase, sunken bathtub, marble fireplaces and ornate water fountains along with what was new to 1930s buildings, an intercom and elevator. Architect Luther Lashmit of Winston-Salem, designed the mansion as well as Graylyn, home of Bowman Gray, the president of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem. Little has changed on the estate since the 1930s with many features in the mansion no longer a part of modernday construction. Included on the grounds are two

A porte-cochere greets guests and the curved stairway to the second floor is within a turret. Adams also owned the land where the Adams Farm subdivision is located today and another Adams home in High Point is now the J.H. Adams Inn on North Main Street. The movie “The Disappointments Room,” a psychological thriller starring Kate Beckinsale, was filmed at Adamsleigh in 2014.

As of 2018, the City of Greensboro and Greensboro Beautiful have shared a partnership for 50 years. “The city provides labor, staff and equipment to support Greensboro beautification and landscaping projects on public property,” Cates explained. “Greensboro Beautiful raises private dollars to fund those efforts. One hundred percent of donations to Greensboro Beautiful goes toward its projects.” Greensboro Beautiful raises about $150,000 annually in private contributions. Volunteers also provide thousands of hours to support the work of the organization. Greensboro Beautiful sponsors four key programs: • Clean Community Programs and Recycling – Volunteers pick up between one-two tons of liter each year. • Landscapes Public Thoroughfares – The first one was a brick welcome sign at the corner of Florida Street and Gate City Boulevard, where Gateway Gardens now stands. • Conducts Community Tree Plantings and Urban Forestry programs – Since 1982, 101,554 trees have been given to the City

A good portion of trees would not be here without that organization.” Cates noted there were several factors that kept her working as City Beautiful Director all these years including the volunteers and other people she has been privileged to work with and seeing the visual results that make Greensboro such a great place to live, work and raise a family. “I can look back over the years and see the impact made by Greensboro Beautiful, the tangible difference it has made to the community,” she said. Cates views her retirement as a new chapter in her life. “I will miss my team members (at the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department) and others I see on a daily bases, but I look forward to spending more time with my family and grandkids,” she said.

Foundations should rescue Bennett

The Piedmont Triad is replete with agencies, organizations, churches, and businesses, who routinely help those in need. We have food banks, homeless shelters, criBy jim longworth sis centers, and Longworth at Large free clinics. Our taxes go to help neighbors who lose their home to a natural disaster, and to those who lose their job through no fault of their own. We choose to lend a hand when necessary because that’s what communities do, and we do it without asking for collateral. One of our neighbors, Bennett College, could use a hand right about now. That’s because the clock is running out on Bennett, which must raise $5 million dollars by Feb. 1, in order to regain their accreditation from SACS, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. I won’t go off on a tangent about SACS, but suffice to say that organizations like that can’t always see the forest for the trees. Bennett College is and always has been academically sound, and has contributed greatly to the community and to the nation. Earlier this year, I was reminded

by Rev. Jesse Jackson that it was Bennett women who sustained the Greensboro lunch counter protest in 1960. Without them, the movement for equal access might have died. Bennett has also strengthened our nation by turning out strong women leaders. On those two counts alone, I’d say Bennett has plenty of collateral and plenty of credibility, and that’s why we owe it to Bennett, and to ourselves to keep the doors open at 900 E. Washington St. I know what you’re thinking. Hey Jim, why can’t Bennett alum come up with the $5 million? First of all, Bennett’s alumni base is small, and second, unlike most every other college in America, Bennett doesn’t have a cash-cow athletic program and a bunch of millionaire football boosters who can raise funds for a stadium expansion in a few hours. Money doesn’t grow on trees at Bennett because they’re not in the money business; they’re in the learning and leadership business. SACS doesn’t care about that because they have a cookie-cutter formula for how much money a college should have on hand, and to hell with what that college means and has meant to its students, to the community

ness foundations to come to the rescue. True, every foundation has its own specific mission, but that mission never operates in a bubble. UNCG, High Point University, GTCC, NC A&T, Guilford College, the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, and others are all about improving quality of life and strengthening the community they serve, so, theoretically they could pledge enough funds to Bennett to keep the “accreditors” at bay. Once that’s done, Bennett would have some time to develop a long-term strategy for meeting and sustaining fiduciary requirements set by SACS. Black History Month is just around the corner. So is the 59th anniversary of the lunch counter sit-in. Let’s mark those commemorations by supporting Bennett College, and contributing to the legacy at large, and to the nation. of the young women who answered the call I’d like to think that, given time, individ- when America needed them. We all owe uals and groups in our area would send in Bennett a debt of gratitude that’s worth enough donations to bail Bennett out. But a lot more than $5 million. It’s payback time is what Bennett doesn’t have. time, folks. So what’s the solution? And, as shelters increasingly support each other, a well-funded local shelter means that it can support other shelters in the area when needed. This type of interdependence has proved its worth: After Hurricane Harvey, thousands of strays and lost pets were saved and kept in safe conditions throughout Texas and surrounding states, thanks to planning and coordina-

tion between animal welfare organizations. Whether you decide to donate to a national organization or a specific shelter, try to find out as much as you can ahead of time about how your donation will be used — how much of the money goes directly to animal care, and how much to administration? Sites like Charity Navigator can provide information about larger organizations, and often you can find that information on a local shelter’s website, or by emailing or calling them.

The office of the presidency is known for wearing down the mere mortals who hold it. At the very least, it prematurely ages its occupants. Often, it humiliates them, forcing them to rehabilitate their reputations later (George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter). In the worst case, it chews them up and spits them out (Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon). It is a journalistic trope that this is happening to Donald Trump before our eyes. The media constantly write stories about how the president is panicked and cornered, barely able to handle his duties, as the walls perpetually “close in.” But as far as any outside observer can tell, he’s as ebullient and combative as ever, and has never blinked no matter how intense the pressure of any given controversy. Far from getting crushed by the weight of the office, Trump doesn’t seem to feel it at all. Never has any president been as outwardly unfazed by the majesty of the presidency, or made less accommodation to its trappings and norms. President Trump still acts like he’s Celebrity Trump fighting a vicious flame war with Rosie O’Donnell, except his targets now might be another head of state, or his own attorney general, or losing members of his own party. The idea that he’s a representative of the nation apparently makes very little impression on him. He never stops to think that any given gibe might be unworthy of the office, or maybe that he, blessed with more power and showered with more attention than anyone on the planet, has an obligation to be elevating and restrained, even if no one else is. One of the attractions of the presidency

to him appears to be that he can continue to punch down — but do it from a higher altitude than ever before. Even after two years, he hasn’t lost his capacity to surprise. Did the president of the United States really render the last name of the incoming chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, as an expletive? Did he call that TV anchor “low IQ”? Did he call his former secretary of state dumb? Of course he did. Much of this is ephemera, but collectively and over time it creates a lasting impression. A major factor in the drubbing that Republicans suffered in the suburbs in November was a reaction against Trump’s persona, as underlined by his own conduct and tweets. If he cares about keeping the presidency — and he surely does — he should care a little more about respecting the dignity of the office. The great advantage of the presidency is that it is naturally set up to invest people elected to it with a certain grandeur, via the White House, saluting Marines, Air Force One, “Hail to the Chief” and ceremonial events large and small. All it requires is showing up and, very often, reading from a script. Rather than simply pocketing this benefit, Trump tends to undercut it 280 characters at a time. If he’s ever brought low, it’s less likely to be from the pressures of his responsibilities than his cussed inability or unwillingness to make a minimal effort to conform to his role.

Healthy Living

A healthy New Year to you!

By Angela shelf medearis kitchen diva

Most Americans typically start each New Year determined to make changes in their lives for the better. For many of us, it means taking charge of our health and creating a healthy eating plan. By the end of January, those good intentions have melted away and a flood of bad habits have returned. This New Year, you may want to make small changes in your eating plan, and then persevere until those choices become a healthy habit. The basis for a healthy eating plan should be fruits and vegetables; whole grains; low-fat or fat-free milk products; lean meats, poultry, fish; and beans, lentils and other legumes. Some foods stand out as superstars with many nutrients to enhance health and prevent disease. Here are some smart food choices to make every day:

such as stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato juice can be found any time of year. The red color of tomatoes comes from lycopene, a phytochemical the body absorbs better from processed tomato products. Lycopene can help prevent prostate cancer and may improve bone health. Tomatoes also contain vitamins A and C, both of which are antioxidants. Add cherry tomatoes to a salad or eat them as a snack, or add a can of stewed tomatoes to chili. Carrots — Bugs Bunny probably has great eyesight, thanks to the beta carotene that gives carrots their orange color. Beta carotene helps protect against some cancers and cardiovascular (heart) disease. In addition, carrots contain vitamin C, vitamin K, fiber and potassium. Add carrots to soups and salads or enjoy as a side dish. Black beans — All beans can promote health, but black beans contain anthocyanidins, the same antioxidant in blueberries. Black beans contain soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol. Beans contain protein as well, making them a good substitution for other protein foods that may be high in fat. Beans are also low in calories, low in fat and inexpensive. Mix black beans with corn and salsa for an easy side dish that is delicious and nutritious.

Yogurt — Low-fat or fat-free yogurt can serve as a snack or even as part of dessert. Yogurt has live cultures and good bacteria that may promote health, boost immunity and increase bone health. Some of the nutrients in yogurt include calcium and potassium, which are important for good bone health. Plus, yogurt contains protein, which helps you stay full longer. Top yogurt with blueberries and walnuts for a nutritious snack or breakfast. Yogurt can Sweet potatoes — Sweet potaalso serve as the base for creamy toes are a rich source of fiber as dips, toppings or dressings. well as containing a good array of vitamins and minerals including Tomatoes — Fresh tomatoes iron, calcium and selenium, and may not be available year-round, they’re a good source of most of but processed tomato products our B vitamins and vitamin C.

One of the key nutritional benefits of sweet potato is that they’re high in the antioxidant known as beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A once consumed. This recipe for Spicy Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili is an easy and delicious way to add several of these foods to your healthy-eating meal plan and enjoy the many health benefits from these nutritional all-stars!
