Candlelight Tour returns to Homeplace Mendenhall Homeplace will again be ablaze with light as the Candlelight Tour returns Dec. 3 and 4. The event runs from 6-8 p.m. each night. The High Point Christian Academy Choir is scheduled to sing carols on Saturday night. The Candlelight Tour has become a tradition in Jamestown since it began in 2016. Due to Covid-19 last year, the event was scaled down to an Open House in

conjunction with the Jamestown Business Association’s Christmas on Main. This year’s tour again will be shortened somewhat due to the lingering pandemic. However, the entire downstairs of the Richard Mendenhall House will be decorated. The Mendenhall family were Quakers and historically that religion, also called Friends, did not celebrate holidays, believing no day, especially Christmas, was more holy than any other. The practice began to change in the latter half of the 19th century. Christmas was celebrated,

sister Lucy Hennessy watches as workers add items representing the current status of Pennybyrn to the facility’s time capsule. COMPILed By nORMa B. dennIs HISTORY MOVES FORWARD On Nov. 16, 1947, a Congregation of Catholic Sisters (known as the Poor Servants of the Mother of God) traveled from England and Ireland with the dream of building a hospital in the small community of High Point, N.C. Due to various setbacks, it was determined by the Sisters that instead of a hospital, they would build and operate a convalescent home, which is located at the corner of Penny and Greensboro roads. Staff and residents recently celebrated this monumental occasion by updating a time capsule that dates to 1947 with items from 2021. Pennybyrn at Maryfield has evolved from its humble beginning to today’s 71-acre campus-style community. Items selected for the time capsule reflect the facility’s growth and the staff’s commitment to service. “Over the years, the one constant that remains is to continue to serve all with dignity and respect, in a spirit of joy and kindness,” said Sister Lucy Hennessy, Pennybyrn mission leader. “The commitment of the SMG Sisters and Pennybyrn has remained unchanged, but the way that we deliver care continues to grow.”

but on a lower key than many people observe it. Whether the Mendenhall family actually celebrated the holiday or not, they certainly used candles to light their home. That is the basis of the Candlelight Tour. A visit to the Candlelight Tour gives many their first opportunity to learn something about the founding family of Jamestown. “There will be educational materials available for those waiting for the next tour to start so we see TOUR, PAGe 6

First fire truck joins parade lineup By nORMa B. dennIs FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Anyone who has lived in the Jamestown area for very long and had the pleasure of attending its annual Christmas Parade will understand that half the enjoyment is seeing so many people you know in the parade and so many you know standing with you to watch it. This year’s parade on Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. should be no exception. It is especially anticipated because last year the parade had to be cancelled due to Covid. The parade is sponsored by the Jamestown Rotary Club and co-sponsored by the Mary Perry Ragsdale Family YMCA and Jamestown Business Association. “We have a very diverse group of entries this year,” said Rotarian Cliff Paddock,

Local author pens book about soul By CaROL BROOks FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com At one time or another, everyone has probably had an “aha” moment. It could be the answer to a problem or finally learning how to do something. The Oxford Languages Dictionary defines it as “a moment of sudden insight or discovery.” Word Hippo defines it as “mental enlightenment of a problem or mystery, epiphany, revelation, inspiration.” Charleen Fischer had that aha moment in 2017. She had returned to the area with no job after living for a year in Hawaii and asked God what she should do next. All of a sudden it came to her — the plot for a book. In the modern world of computers, Fischer said the experience was “like it was downloaded to me.”

A+: A Lesson About Soul is the result, a 44-page book for all ages. “I originally said it was for 9-12 yearolds,” Fischer said, “but many adults said they benefited from reading it. “It’s for three kinds of people: parents like to share information about the afterlife, death and dying, facing the fear of death, and question about how computers might pass us in the future; kids who ask challenging questions; and adults who like illustrated books.” The main character in the book, Andrew, is an android, a creation that can do almost anything. Grandma Edna, however, is near the end of her life. How these two teach the two children about death is thought provoking. Y receives grant for safety Around Water program By nORMa B. dennIs FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com The YMCA of Greensboro Association recently received a grant from POOLCORP for $125,000 to conduct a Safety Around Water program in 2022. POOLCORP is one of the world’s largest wholesale distributors of swimming pool supplies, equipment and related leisure products. When Rachael Jonas, executive director of aquatics at the YMCA of Greater New Orleans contacted Justine Intiso, the aquatics director at Ragsdale Family YMCA, to see if she would be interested in learning more about an opportunity to receive funding for such a program, Intiso’s reaction was a resounding yes. “I told her the YMCA of GreensPhoto by Norma B. expenditures top revenues for golf course By CaROL BROOks FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The total revenue for the Jamestown Golf Course for October was $117,028 and operating expenditures were $154,092. This indicates a net operating loss of $37,064 for the month. There was also an operating loss in October 2020 of $31,606. The difference is due to an increase in number of employees, as well as more inventory purchases of golf merchandise and food and higher prices, especially for fuel. On the other hand, there were more rounds played in October this year compared to the same month in 2020, 3,117 rounds played to 3,046 rounds. Year-to-date, rounds are down 1,000 rounds. The grill had a net loss

Last year’s figures reflect time the course was closed during Covid-19. Greens fees revenue this year were up 9.25 percent in October and 17.11 percent for the fiscal year. Golf shop inventory sales were up 63.18 percent in October and 1.27 percent for the fiscal year. Overall, total golf course revenue was up 4.53 percent for the fiscal year. Total expenditures were up 15.3 percent. October food and beverage sales were up $2,400 compared to the previous year. October 2021 profits were $9,859 and 2020 profits were $7,471.

Jamestown purchased the 1928 American LaFrance pumper fire truck from the city of High Point in 1948 to use in its first fire department. The truck, which was retired as a working engine in 1968, was sold to Willard Moore, founder of Yester-

Thomas, chief fire marshal of the PinecroftSedgefield Fire Department, will be riding on Jamestown’s first fire truck during the upcoming Christmas parade on Dec. 5. year in Motion, and became part of his collection of old mechanical objects. It was later sold to John Jenkins, a Greensboro businessman, and then to Joe Smith, a former employee of Jenkins. When Smith decided to liquidate his collection of fire equipment memorabilia, he offered to sell the old engine to the PinecroftSedgefield Fire Department. “The fire department decided it could not buy it,” Thomas said. “I talked to Jamestown about purchasing the engine since it played a big part in the town’s history.” The Town Council approved the acquisition in February 2017. In June of that year the engine came full circle back to Jamestown where it has been restored by Thomas, Bruce Dillon and Art Wise. Working within a budget for parts, Dillon, Wise and Thomas volunteered countless hours returning the old engine to the look of its glory days. Although the men, along with some volunteer assistance from Knight, donated their time to the project, some work on the old engine

Safety Around Water skills typically taught in stages 1-3 of the swim lesson continuum,” Intiso said. “We will be focusing mainly on ages 3-14 for the program, but would love to involve ages 15-18 as well.” The YMCA of Greensboro Association offers swim lessons year-round at all its locations. The Safety Around Water program will be held at the Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA, Kathleen Price Bryan Family YMCA and Alex W. Spears III YMCA, all in Greensboro; Mary Perry Ragsdale Family YMCA in Jamestown; Reidsville Family YMCA in Reidsville; and Eden Family YMCA in Eden. “Each branch has a set number to serve,” Intiso said. “The Ragsdale Y will look to serve 450 of the 1,000 youth. We will be working with some schools in our area, possibly the city of Greensboro, and looking to partner with other outside organizations, as well as kids in our community that we know need the program.” All registration information will be sent out in the early spring of 2022 and plans are to start the program in April.

continued from front ma does, and her soul will live on. The “plus” factor is having soul. Grandma Edna has visions of the afterlife that she relates to the family. “Grandma sees the future and helps her grandson learn,” Fischer said. “If young people can get the idea they don’t have to fear dying, that’s a gift. “I’m encouraged by people who tell me they’ve learned from the book.” Although Fischer had the plot, she didn’t have an illustrator. She interviewed several artists and decided her granddaughter’s friend Victoria Reynolds fit the bill after seeing her illustra-

tion of Andrew. “I absolutely fell in love,” Fischer said of the humanlooking android illustration. “Androids are getting to look pretty human.” With the plot and illustrator in place, the search began for a publisher. “I decided to self-publish after trying several publishing houses,” she said. “People say it’s easy, but I ended up hiring a book coach. It was something I felt called to do.” Actually launching the book in October was an ordeal in itself, especially the marketing. “There are well over one million books self-pub-

lished on Amazon every year. How do you get yours noticed?” Fischer asked. “I had to follow through with it. I couldn’t drop it.” Is there another book in Fischer’s future? “It would take a strong message from the Divine to do it,” she said with a laugh. A retired teacher who loved giving out pluses to her students, Fischer lives in Kernersville and is a member of the board of directors for the Historic Jamestown Society. A+: A Lesson About Soul is available on Amazon in paperback or Kindle e-book.

had to be outsourced. A company in Archdale painted the truck and another one in Tennessee refinished the chrome pieces. “We had to have some parts especially made for the engine,” Wise noted. “We managed to come in slightly under budget,” Dillon said. Now that the engine is finished and mobile, it will live at the Jamestown Fire Station, Pinecroft-Sedgefield Station 46, and be used in parades and for special occasions. On Nov. 30, it was included in a traditional “push-in” ceremony along with the newest fire truck purchased for the Jamestown station. When a new truck is placed in service, it is pushed into the bay for the first time, a tradition that dates back over 100 years to a time before fire trucks were motorized. Although the original Jamestown fire truck may be one of the newest additions to the longtime Christmas parade, the traditional entries, colorful decorations and excitement of the season is sure to put smiles on the faces of those who attend this special event.

tion and I informed her if we got the grant we could serve 1,000 youths.” Last year POOLCORP partnered with the New Orleans YMCA, but this year has expanded its donation to eight YMCAs across the country. Following a meeting with Jonas and considering her recommendation, POOLCORP selected the Greensboro YMCA Association as one of the recipients for funding of the 2022 water safety program. “This grant is so meaningful to our YMCAs because it will allow us to reach more youth with the Safety Around Water program,” Intiso said. “We have this amazing opportunity to serve more than we normally would be able to.” The Safety Around Water program focuses on key water safety skills that are designed to teach kids and adults how to be safe in the water. It teaches skills like swim-float-swim, a sequence of skills that allows persons to calmly keep themselves safe in water above their heads. It teaches how to swim, take a break to float, and continue swimming to safety. “The base of the program will be the

How to host a fun and easy cookie exchange By patti diamond divas on a dime ‘Tis the week after Thanksgiving and holiday baking is officially in season. As we gear up for all the hoopla and fa la la la la-ing, who has time to bake cookies? You can kill two partridges with one pear tree and share the cookie duties with friends by hosting a cookie exchange party! You’ll all save money and time, get a great variety of cookies, and have a low-effort, high-return holiday gathering. Here’s ho, ho how: Your invitation should state clearly that you are having a cookie exchange and that each guest is expected to arrive with cookies and that they will be taking cookies home. Each person bakes and brings the same number of one kind of cookie to share. I find that if everyone brings four dozen cookies, that works nicely. Ask each guest to bring one dozen on a plate to enjoy at the party and three dozen to divide and send home. This way, no matter how many people attend, everyone goes home with three dozen cookies and a sugar coma. Ask each invitee to let you know what cookie they plan to bring. This avoids duplications (and a potential showdown throwdown, or is that just my friends?). Ask them to print the recipe to share, noting any common allergens, and put their name

(If you mix by hand, you deserve an extra cookie.) 3. If you’re making round cookies, you can take walnut-sized pieces of dough and roll them into balls, then flatten slightly. Place them on the baking sheet 3 inches apart, as the cookies will spread. 4. If you want to roll and cut out cookies, refrigerate dough for 1 hour to firm up. Roll dough 1/4-inch thick on a surface dusted with flour. Cut into desired shape and place on prepared baking sheets. 5. continued from front can keep groups small and more personal,” said Rachel Orio, one of the organizers. “Tours should run about 20 minutes, so no group will be waiting too long.” The tour begins in the Hall Room, part of the original 1811-12 home of the Richard Mendenhall family. This is where the family welcomed guests. It is decorated simply with local greenery and candles. The New Parlor is part of the circa-1820s addition. This room is decorated in the Victorian style with many

pieces of furniture donated from Mendenhall descendants. Be certain to take a look at the huge tree. Thy Store will be open in the Gathering Room for the purchase of souvenirs. Please follow local guidelines regarding Covid-19 protocols. The Candlelight Tour is free this year, but donations are gratefully accepted as the tour is normally a major fund-raising effort for Historic Jamestown Society. All proceeds benefit the work of the HJS. Maintain-

ing and operating Mendenhall Homeplace comes at a cost to provide educational opportunities for school groups and interpret Jamestown’s early history for visitors from around this country and abroad. The Mendenhall Homeplace is located at 603 W. Main St., across from City Lake Park. Parking is available on-site.
