Jamestown United is more than talk What started as a Facebook group to discuss concerns about the development of the former Johnson property at the corner of Guilford College and Mackey roads in Jamestown has turned into more of a community forum. “People post things happening in town and locally,” said Katie Schoenfelder Gumerson, one of the Facebook organizers. “In general it has turned into a community focus group. “I have made a lot of friends participating. It is nice for Jamestown and the surrounding area.” Members of the forum, called Jamestown United, decided in November to take their concern for the community one step further by adopting a local family in need for the upcoming holiday. Through the school Gumer-

son’s daughter attends, the group found a single mother with two young children who was struggling. Jamestown United not only made sure the family had a nice Thanksgiving meal, but helped stock their pantry as well. “We asked what their needs were and for Christmas bought clothes and other household essentials and provided haircuts and toys,” Gumerson said. “The children also received bikes and helmets. “Carol Mehl agreed to wrap everything,” Gumerson added. “My son counted over 50 presents.” About 75 people participated in the project so donations for the family added up quickly. “People have been great,” Gumerson said. “I think lots of people want to help others but do not know how. We set up Amazon links or had things dropped off at my house to make it easy

Gifts for the seniors

included such items as pajamas or nightgowns, puzzles, books, nail files and polish or other fun things that would provide pleasure. Several children drew cards for the residents. Jamestown United organizers plan to keep the forum going in the future.

Holiday Traditions

This time of year often brings a flurry of activities, but there is also joy in sitting for a spell, sipping a cup of coffee or tea and thinking about holiday traditions and what they mean.

Some say it came from a pagan custom in Europe of bringing “good spirits” into the home during dark winter days (or was it to ward off bad spirits?). He brought it into his home and decked it with candles to share beauty with his children. When I was growing up our family always had a Submitted photo Christmas tree. Christmas pickle ornament could be a fraud BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com There are many traditions of the holiday season but one is not only quite odd, but its origins are controversial. I’m talking about the Christmas pickle ornament. Tradition goes that the pickle ornament is the last one placed on the tree but if you were the first child to find it on Christmas morning, you would either receive an extra present, get to pick [no pun intended] the first present or be awarded the job of handing out the presents. You would also

receive good luck for the entire upcoming year. “There are a lot of people who care about what is happening in town and ask questions,” Gumerson said. “This is a great source of information. But we definitely want to do more for local children and seniors too. We are already talking about projects for Valentine’s Day.”

Board approves variance BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com After testimony from the applicant and several minutes of discussion, the Jamestown Board of Adjustment unanimously approved a variance request for 118 Brookberry Dr. at its Dec. 13 meeting. The request made by Bradley Arledge of Greensboro for construction of a new home in the Forestdale East development would reduce the front setback from 40 feet to 18 feet. Arledge states

in his request that due to constraints caused by the current setbacks and a 50-foot barrier due to a stream on the southern side of the property, he would like an exception to matching neighboring setbacks. He also requests the house face Edwards Lane. Articles 8.4-2(F) and 9.22(3) of the Land Development Ordinance require a minimum front setback of 15 feet in the Single-Family Residential Zoning district. However, Article 9.2-2 states that along existing streets in SEE BOARD, PAGE 2

New laws go into effect Jan. 1 BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com Several new North Carolina laws will become effective Jan. 1. Here are just some of the new laws of which the public should be aware. Senate Bill 103 is an act to reduce unnecessary regulatory constraints for children with autism and applied behavior analysis. Senate Bill 248 will provide additional health benefit plan information on insurance cards.

House Bill 734 makes revision to laws pertaining to the Department of Health and Human Services. These laws protect N.C. citizens from the unlicensed operation of mental health facilities and from programs providing services requiring a license according to the General Statutes of the state. The bill also modifies the Consumer and Family Advisory committees. House Bill 366 provides additional regulatory relief to state residents. SEE LAWS, PAGE 2

Council interviews manager candidates BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com Jamestown’s Town Council held special called closed session meetings on Dec. 16 and 17 regarding the hiring of a new town manager. “Yes, we are interviewing,” said Mayor Lynn Montgomery via email. She declined to offer additional information on the candidate selection process. The Town Council has

The meeting was “to consider the qualifications, competence, performance, character, fitness, conditions of appointment or conditions of initial employment of an individual public officer or employee or prospective public officer or employee; or to hear or investigate a complaint, charge, or grievance by or against an individual public officer or employee under N.C.G.S. 143-318.11 (6),” according to a press release.

BOARD

CONTINUED FROM FRONT existing neighborhoods, new buildings shall be situated to meet the average setbacks of existing buildings within a 400 feet radius. This would mean that the applicant would need to meet a front setback of approximately 40 feet. Brookberry Drive deadends along the eastern property line. The property is currently undeveloped. The southern portion of the property is wooded. Houses exist to the west on O’Neill Drive, north across the street on Brookberry Drive, and east across the street on Edwards Lane. “I love this community and really hope to build a house here,” Arledge said. “I

plan to put a beautiful home there and believe it will add to the community.” He admitted difficulty in finding a house plan that would fit on the lot with a steam on it. The Jamestown Planning Department believe Arledge’s request is a hardship request due to the stream and buffering laws making the required setback difficult and therefore suggests approval of the variance. The Board had four criteria to guide them in the decision: the hardship did not result from actions taken by the applicant or property owner; the hardship results from the strict application of the ordinance; the hard-

ship results from conditions peculiar to the property, such as topography; and that the requested variance is consistent with the spirit, purpose and intent of the ordinance, such that public safety is secured and substantial justice is achieved.. Tadd W. Meyn of Winston-Salem is the current property owner. Arledge is a potential buyer and has Meyn’s permission to request the variance. Several years ago, the Board of Adjustment was made a part of the Planning Board, with the same members serving on both boards. Residents of the town and its Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) are members.

LAWS

CONTINUED FROM FRONT HB 489 2-21 makes various building code and development regulatory reforms. SB 308 provides amendments to the state Building Code to prevent delays in issuing a temporary certificate of occupancy, to clarify electric wiring requirement references and to modify one- or two-family dwelling residential development fire apparatus access road requirements. SB 693 Amends various abuse, neglect and dependency laws to ensure the safety of children in out-of-home placements and speeds up permanency planning hearing for children who have been removed from the home, among other things. HB 436 requires psychological screenings of law enforcement officers prior to certification or employment. It requires education on maintaining good mental health and gives information to law enforcement officers on available mental health resources. The bill also creates a physical fitness study. SB 300 looks at criminal justice reform by increasing protections, training and oversight for all state and local law enforcement officers. It requires use of the Federal

Bureau of Investigation’s Next Generation identification system and Rap Back Service, and other items. HP 27 requires all magistrates to receive the proper education to perform the duty of magistrate. HB 403 revises and clarifies laws governing new motor vehicle dealer franchises. HB 890 makes changes to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission laws. SB 542 allows the North Carolina State Health Plan for Teachers and State Employees to adopt a program to give plan members an incentive to report activities such as fraud, waste and abuse by health care providers who provide services to plan members. HB 685 amends the Consumer Finance Act to allow the recovery of electronic transaction fees imposed by third parties and amends the Retail Installment Sales Act to clarify the definition of official fees. SB 270 revised the obligations of an insurer and its agent relating to rate evasion fraud. It creates a civil penalty for the fraudulent preparation, issuance, requesting or requirement of a certificate of insurance.

HOLIDAY

CONTINUED FROM FRONT to another down each pew, was not likely to be held this year due to precautions incurred by the pandemic. I failed however to take into account the ingenuity of our church leaders who took this time-honored tradition and made it work in a new way. As people entered the sanctuary, they were given a small red paper bag containing a bulletin with words to

Christmas songs the congregation would sing, a candle for the candlelight service to follow and a bun packed carefully in a sandwich bag. There was even a napkin to hold the bun as it was eaten. Servers then passed throughout the congregation handing each person a red paper cup of the sweetened coffee. Jourdan Howell, a former

music director at Conrad, sang songs of praise as the “feast” proceeded. Although the Love Feast looked quite different from that of years past, it held all the significance of the season. It also showed that Christians could and would find ways to worship whatever the circumstance. The realization blessed me as never before.

in the Midwest. The German settlement of Berrien Springs, Mich., is known as the Christmas Pickle Capital of the World and holds an annual Christmas Pickle Festival. Santa Claus hands out fresh pickles, not candy or presents. Several possible origins of the Christmas pickle ornament can be found on the Internet. In one tale, a mean innkeeper killed two Spanish boys and trapped them in a pickle barrel. Saint Nicholas set them free and brought them back to life. Another story tells of a German immigrant who became a soldier in the American Civil War and was held captive in Georgia. Starving, he begged for and was given a pickle, which ended up sustaining him.

Undoubtedly the original ornament was a real pickle – if there really was an original ornament, but perhaps the most logical explanation could very well have been just a marking scheme. It is known that in the 1840s, German glassblowers made ornaments shaped like fruit and nuts, so pickles also might have been a possibility. By the 1880s, five-and-dime store giant F. W. Woolworth Co. started importing them to sell and perhaps concocted a story of its origin. So, do you have a pickle on your Christmas tree? It’s supposed to bring good luck for the entire upcoming year so it might not be a bad idea – no matter what the origin.

Find last-minute gifts on Candy Cane Lane 4. Let cool and break into pieces.

BY PATTI DIAMOND DIVAS ON A DIME If there’s an official flavor of the season it has to be peppermint. And if you’ve waited to the last minute to make holiday treats for your friends, don’t fret! Peppermint has got you covered. There’s a general rule of thumb that makes holiday gift giving much easier: When in doubt, go the foodie gift route. That said, here are some favorite recipes starring the red and white cane. They’re easy, fun to prepare, inexpensive and make great gifts. The hardest part is getting the stupid plastic wrap off the candy canes. CANDY CANE VODKA 6 full sized candy canes 750 ml vodka First, don’t waste the good stuff. Buy inexpensive vodka. Use a food processor (or go medieval with a mallet) to render the candy canes into a chunky powder. Pour off a couple ounces of the vodka and reserve. Add the peppermint powder to the vodka and top off with reserved vodka to fill the bottle. Let it sit about an hour, shaking occasionally, until the candy canes are dissolved in the vodka. Admire the lovely pink color. Chill and serve. Easy peasy! So what do you do with the peppermint infused vodka? You can sip it over ice, use it to adulterate hot chocolate or eggnog, make peppermint mochas with a kick, or make a martini.

CANDY CANE POPCORN 1/2 cup popcorn kernels (approximately 10 cups popped) 1 1/2 cups (12 ounces) vanilla candy melts or vanilla almond bark 1/2 cup candy canes, finely crushed 1 tablespoon decorative sprinkles (optional)

It was somewhere between a Norman Rockwell painting and a Hallmark Moment. Our extended family had just gathered for Christmas last year at our cozy cabin nestled in Northern California’s coastal redwood forest. The kids were busy chopping wood in the misty, foggy air, and my husband was stoking the fire in the sturdy Norwegian stove, while I arranged fresh pine and eucalyptus down the center of our family’s century-old dining-room table. Then, just as Grandma Dolly cracked the last egg for her traditional Swedish rice pudding, we heard a knock at the front door. Beaming from ear to ear, our friend from down the road stepped inside to present us with a delectable plate of his mom’s homemade treats. From crunchy peanut brittle to light coconut meringue, the gift assortment was the exclamation point to a perfect afternoon.
