Oldest, newest trucks now housed at fire station By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Jamestown’s Pinecroft Sedgefield Fire Station No. 46 placed a new fire engine into service for the first time Nov. 30. A large crowd attended the 6 p.m. celebration, including many children, Mayor Lynn Montgomery, Town Council members, most Town staff, retired firefighters and volunteers, and Larry Lain, retired fire chief of the Jamestown station. “When we place a new truck into service, we push the fire truck in to the bay for the first time,” said PSFD Chief Derek Carson. “This is a tradition that dates back over 100 years to a time before fire trucks were motorized. In those days, fire departments operated with horsedrawn equipment. After returning from a call, firefighters would have to push the equipment back

compiled By NORMA B. DENNIS Christmas on Main continues to ring in the season To celebrate the spirit of Christmas in Jamestown and support local businesses, Christmas on Main has been scheduled for every Wednesday in December – including the 1, 8, 15 and 22 – from 5-8 p.m. In case you have missed the start of this seasonal event, there is still time to participate in the fun. A trolley will be available to transport people from one end of town to the other, ending at Jamestown Center on West Main. Hot chocolate will be served at the Town Hall and new this year is a Dewey’s Bakery located for the season at Kisses for Kate in Jamestown Center. Many participating businesses will have cards that patrons may get stamped as they visit each location on the list. You may get them stamped anytime throughout the coming weeks, during the stores’ regular business hours or on the Christmas on Main event nights. The filled cards must be turned in by Dec. 22. A drawing will be held Dec. 23 for two gift baskets featuring goods from the businesses. For everyone’s safety, masks are required on the trolley and in the shops. A display has been placed at the stage area at Wrenn Miller Park, which creates a special place to make Christmas selfies or family photos. On Dec. 8 and 15 a professional photographer will be on hand to made pictures with the display as a backdrop. Food Drive To assist those in need, Jamestown United Methodist Church will sponsor a drive-thru collection of food items Dec. 11 from 1-3 p.m.

years to come,” Carson said. “This truck is state-of-the-art, with advanced technology that will notify motorists by mapping apps when they are approaching a fire or emergency scene, carries 1,000 gallons of water, has the latest LED lights 360 degrees around the truck, and all the safety features inside the cab to keep our firefighters as safe as possible whether responding to or leaving incident scenes,” he added. The new truck looks to be more than twice the size of the other “new” engine at Sta. 46 – the town’s first fire truck, a 1929 American LaFrance engine. According to social media, Ted Womack and Brian Faircloth drug it out of Willard Moore’s barn, got it running, and drove it up and down Dillon Road when Moore owned it. Today, thanks to Bruce Dillon, Art Wise, Jonathan Knight, Steven Thomas and other volunteers, the restored engine is on display

Both will be housed in Jamestown, but the 1929 engine will no longer answer calls. at Sta. 46. It made an appearance in the Jamestown Christmas Parade this past Sunday, but will not respond to calls. “We really are excited about this [latest] fire truck and have all the faith in the world in the PSFD,” said Montgomery. “On behalf of the Town, the staff and

New business helps draw customers uptown By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Jamestown’s newest retail store, Guilford & Main, should be easy to locate. It is housed in the old Pinnacle Bank building, where a left turn from Main Street leads directly to Guilford Road. If people’s interest in the business since it opened on Black Friday is any indication, however, it will soon be recognized more for its content than it location. The store features fashion – ranging from clothing in sizes 0-20 to jewelry to home décor. Hand-painted pillows in almost any design imaginable and custom jackets, cups, jewelry and more representing High Point University will also be available for sale. “We have a few pieces of furniture now, but the large room at the back of the building will eventually become a furniture gallery,” said owner Lisa Perdue. Guilford & Main is the third store Perdue and her husband Alan, a current Guilford County commissioner, have founded. When determining where to open it, the Perdues knew they wanted to buy a building instead of rent or lease. They felt the demographics of Jamestown fit their plans and the former bank, which had been vacant for over a year, seemed a good location. “Jamestown has opened its arms to us,” Perdue said. “It feels right to be here. It feels like home.” Perdue’s love of fashion

Bradley Arldege has requested a variance for 118 Brookberry Dr., shown above, to construct a new residence facing Edwards Lane. (View is looking north.)

In January 2021, when the City of High Point conducted a Jamestown Bypass Land Use Assessment, Karen Small’s family property on Bales Chapel Road could have been rezoned to allow high-density development. At the time, she said her family doesn’t plan to sell to developers and are in the process of making certain their land is protected. That process is on the Guilford County Planning Board and, this time, the Small family is behind it, filing a rezoning application in late October.

And they tell me they’re going to push it into the station!” exclaimed Jamestown Mayor Lynn Montgomery to the crowd. “I did some research and found it was built in Appleton, Wis., famous for being the homeplace of Harry Houdini. So, Chief Carson, I’m hoping they brought a little magic in this truck to help you get it into the station.” Now that trucks are much larger, motorized and have a reverse gear, the push-in is symbolic, with the engine running, a firefighter inside guiding, and others “pushing” outside. Firefighters and staff of the department started planning and designing the new engine 12 months ago. “Many hours were spent to assure our firefighters would have the best fire truck possible to serve this community for many

Local attraction Park features christmas wonderland By CHAnel dAViS

Triad residents have the opportunity to return to a local entertainment attraction, this time to partake in Christmas cheer. Kersey Valley Attractions has added “Lights, Santa, Action!” to its list of annual events this year. Labeled as a “one-stop, year-round adventure park” in the High Point/Jamestown area, Kersey Valley staff has worked to create a winter wonderland with all the perks. A feat that Tony Wohlgemuth, owner of Kersey Valley Attractions, said the attraction has had in the making for the past few years. “We had been planning and planning, so finally it was time to execute. It was well thought out. We even have a farm map that we hand people that shows where all the activities are,” he said with excitement in his voice. “When you approach the farm, you are looking through layers and layers of lights. When you walk through the farm, you’ll find that there are different themes, and it’s designed to create magical moments. We wanted to create bonding experiences. We thought of every little thing we could think of to make it really stand out.” The seasonal event began November 26 and will run on weekends until December

17, when it will begin running daily until December 23. Attendees will have a chance to ride the Kersey Valley Express Train through Wild West Christmas, a Christmas Wagon ride around the farm, Santa’s workshop, kiddie zip lines, pedal carts, trampolines, singing reindeer, fire pits for s’mores, pictures with Santa, and The Grinch. “The train goes around the property to view the lights, and we have hay wagons that have lights and music for Christmas caroling. There’s so many things to do, but it’s all included in one price with no extra add-ons other than food, and there is unlimited access to these activities,” he said. Visitors will also have a chance to experience the farm covered in one million LED lights. Wohlgemuth said that they began placing the lights during the fall and during the park’s biggest season of the year, when it’s a Corn Maize during the day and Spookywoods during the evening. “Around November 6, we mowed down the large corn maze and started installing the infrastructure for the lights and worked on that diligently. While SpookyWoods was in operation, we started putting up Christmas lights at the back of the property,” Wohlgemuth said. “It’s overwhelming Graphic courtesy of Town of Jamestown

Water Authority to switch disinfection method By CARol BRookS freelaNce writer cab1hp@gmail.com Area residents may have noticed a temporary taste and odor of chlorine in their water recently as the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority began switching its water disinfection method. The process is projected to take until mid-April of next year. The temporary change switches the water disinfecting method from chloramines to free chlorine. While chloramine disinfection is the preferred method of water treatment, it is a weaker disinfectant. PTRWA will follow the recommendation to switch back to free chlorine for approximately five months

in order to reduce the likelihood of bacteria growing in the water system. While the taste and odor may be unpleasant, it will not affect water quality. The taste and odor of chlorine will disappear at the conclusion of the maintenance process when chloramines are resumed. PTRWA uses surface water from the Randleman Regional Reservoir as its source of drinking water. The man-made reservoir holds approximately 18.3 billion gallons of water and is capable of providing up to 48 million gallons of treated water a day. During the process of disinfecting the water coming from the reservoir, chlorine is added to kill bacteria and other microorganisms

that may be in the water before water is stored and distributed to our partners. Fluoride is also added to the water at this stage to establish a baseline fluoride residual that provides additional dental health benefits. As the water is sent to the distribution system, ammonia is added to create chloramines, which help to maintain a stable disinfectant residual in the system while minimizing the production of disinfection byproducts. PTRWA members are Jamestown, Greensboro, High Point, Reidsville, Archdale, Randolph County and Burlington. Jamestown customers who have questions may contact the Town at 336454-1138.

how much we have put into and thought out every little detail to make magical moments for the families as they explore the farm.” One attraction that Wohlgemuth is excited about is the Mega Slide. The 200-foot snow-tubing slide has been a hit, according to the park’s owner. The dual allows for racing, whether that’s against friends, family, or parental units. “It’s really fast and can take your breath away, but people get right back in line and do it again,” he said. “I hear that people ride it multiple times, even the parents. That’s a hit.” Admission to the park is $25.63 for ages four and up, $15.56 for seniors 65 and up,

and $19.22 for groups of 20 or more. Children three and under are free, but children must be at least four to participate in some of the attractions activities. The event has had much success since kicking off. So much so that Wohlgemuth recommends making reservations early to ensure entry. “The feedback has been so amazing. People are blown away at how we’ve transformed the farm rather quickly,” he said. “It’s amazing to see people’s faces when they come in, and it’s amazing to see at night.” For more information on ticket prices, the park, or admission, visit www. kerseyvalleychristmas.com.

SWG Basketball @ HPC The Cowboys hit the road to open up the 20212022 regular season. These two teams squared off last year in what was a challenging season for most teams in the area. How would the new look Cowboys fare against the familiar city foe? The bison came into tonight’s contest having lost a tough battle to High Point Andrews while this was the Cowboys’ first game action on the season. Could the Cowboys shake off the rust or would the bison be able to lasso in Southwest? The opening frame was back and forth as both teams struggled to find any sort of rhythm or flow. The visiting squad managed just a handful more positive plays to hold a slim 13-8 lead at the close of the first stanza. The second quarter had the hosting bison play a sharper brand of ball and outplayed Southwest to cut the margin going into the break at 23-19 to end the discombobulated half. The third frame was when the visitors finally seemed to show some glimpses of basketball acumen as the pressure and pace helped control the segment. The Cowboys converted turnovers into points at a much greater rate than the first half which allowed them to put the margin into double digits. Central would not quit nor let them run away with it as the frame ended with Southwest leading 38-28. The final frame was an intense battle. Like a game of peekaboo with your toddler, the Cowboys’ intensity seemed to have vanished. The bison came roaring back, taking advantage of miscues, and a lack of focus by Southwest. The bison’s furious flurry tied the ball game with timely shooting at 45-45 with under a minute to play. The teams traded empty trips, and the Cowboys called a timeout. out of the time out, the visitors

managed to execute the play call and made a clutch corner three under 20 seconds to play. Some solid team defense and timely rebounds helped the visiting Cowboys to their first win of the season as they win 50-45. High Point Central were led by Tre Hill with 12 points. The Cowboys were paced by Amarya Huggins with (17, 5 Rebs, 4 Asts), and Mason Drabik with (10, 2 Rebs). An all around team effort for the Cowboys to start the 2021-2022 campaign. The Cowboys will hit the road to face off a very good Mount Tabor team Tuesday, november 7. HPC Southwest

from the front High Point Museum plans Scottish Faire in the historical park press release HIGH POINT (Nov. 29, 2021) — The High Point Museum will host a Scottish Faire on Saturday, Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Historical Park. Join early North Carolina Scots families as they prepare to celebrate and enjoy festive Scottish traditions for New Year’s Eve (Hogmanay) and the Yule season. Get ready for the end-ofyear festivities by coming in costume while observing traditional Hogmanay dishes being made over an open fire. Experience the Scottish festivities with demonstrations and activities throughout the day. Watch historic beer brewer Frank McMahon demonstrate his 18th-century craft, and Kristin Toler and Sarah Moore knit and weave pieces of Scottish clothing. Hear Celtic band the Syllabub Trio and the Jamestown Pipe and Drums play Scottish melodies and listen to traditional Gaelic folktales told by Dr. Michael Newtons. Learn some new moves with Scottish dancing lessons and enjoy the smell of venison roasting over an open fire. “These Scottish traditions would have been familiar to many early

Scots-Irish settlers in the Triad,” said Museum Director Edith Brady. “We are excited to share the history, food and crafts of the New Year’s celebration.” In addition to the Scottish Faire, there will be a craft project in Little Red Schoolhouse from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees can decorate and make their very own set of bagpipes to play. The High Point Museum, a division of the High Point Public Library, shares Greater High Point’s history, provides perspective for current issues,

and strengthens the sense of community. The City of High Point aims to serve as the catalyst for bringing together the community’s human, economic and civic resources for the purpose of creating the single most livable, safe and prosperous community in America. continued from front new home would reduce the front setback from 40 feet to 18 feet Arledge states in his request that he would like to match neighboring setbacks, due to constraints caused by the current setbacks and a 50 feet barrier due to a stream on the property. He also requests the house face Edwards Lane. Brookberry Drive dead-ends in the middle of the eastern property line. The property is currently undeveloped. Articles 8.4-2(F) and 9.2-2(3) of the Land Development Ordinance require a minimum front setback of 15 feet in the Single-Family Residential Zoning district. However, Article 9.2-2 states that along existing streets in existing neighborhoods, new buildings shall be situated to meet the average setbacks of existing

buildings within a 400 feet radius. This would mean that the applicant would need to meet a front setback of approximately 40 feet The property currently is owned by Tadd W. Meyn of Winston-Salem. Arledge is a potential buyer and has Meyn’s permission to request the variance. The Jamestown Planning Department believe Arledge’s request is a hardship request due to the stream and buffering laws making the required setback difficult and therefore suggests approval of the variance. Several years ago, the Board of Adjustment was made a part of the Planning Board, with the same members serving on both boards. Residents of the town and its Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) are members. The Board of Adjustment meeting

is a quasi-judicial hearing. According to Wikipedia, “a quasi-judicial body is a non-judicial body which can interpret law. It is an entity such as an arbitrator or tribunal board, generally of a public administrative agency, which has powers and procedures resembling those of a court of law or judge, and which is obliged to objectively determine facts and draw conclusions from them so as to provide the basis of an official action. … Decisions of a quasi-judicial body are often legally enforceable under the laws of a jurisdiction. They can be challenged in a court of law, which is the final decisive authority.” The Board of Adjustment meeting will be held in the Civic Center at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.

continued from front The Dec. 8 meeting will hear a proposal to rezone 927, 929, 1007-ZZ 1013, 1103 Bales Chapel Road, located in the Jamestown Township but just outside the town limits in High Point’s Extraterritorial Jurisdiction, from RS-40 Single-Family Residential to Agricultural (AG). The property is owned by Brian Timothy Small and Karen Spangler Small and Christopher Douglas Small and comprises approximately 20.45 acres. The area borders the new Jamestown bypass to the north and is surrounded by undeveloped, agricultural and single-family properties. According to the Board’s agenda packet, “The requested change will reduce the amount of residential development permitted on these parcels.” The proposed rezoning is consistent with the recommendation of the Southwest Area Plan of Residential Single-Family Land Use. The Planning Department has recommended approval. “The requested action is reasonable and in the public interest because it is adjacent to the Marie Poteat Voluntary Agricultural District to the east,” the packet states. The property in question was the subject of discussion in the first three months of this year when the City of High Point conducted a Jamestown Bypass Land Use Assessment. At that time, Karen Small and Poteat protested the plan, which called for low- to medium-density zoning. “The proposed plan calls for much higher density zoning along Dillon and calls for a long-term plan for annexation of the land bound east-to-west by Dillon and Harvey and north-to-south from Bales Chapel to the Jamestown line,” said Small, who lives on Bales Chapel Road, in January. “The amount of allowable development they are asking for plus whatever happens at the Johnson property will alter our lives in ways that I can’t even imagine.” There is already a 76-unit residential development going up on Bales Chapel Road, next to Bales Memorial Wesleyan Church. Poteat pointed out that once an area is developed high-density, the property is no longer recognizable due to clear-cutting and grading. “They change everything that was there,” Poteat said of developers. “They come in and plan roads for the maximum housing and then put in non-native plants. Whatever benefit was there for people and animals is gone.” Small cited the need to upgrade existing roadways to handle high-density traffic, the potential for increased flooding, and pollution to Deep River due to increased runoff. Since the January meeting, proposed plans for 82 acres of the area in question – that closest to the Jamestown town limits – were modified, with medium-density residential cut approximately in half and eliminating just over half of the proposed development along Bales Chapel Road. It no longer abuts Jamestown town limits and removes the property of the Small family and Poteat. The Guilford County Planning Board will meet at 6 p.m. Dec. 8 at the N.C. Cooperative ExtensionAgricultural Center, 3309 Burlington Road, Greensboro. The public is invited to attend.

Rosemary cashews for holiday snacking

Good Housekeeping Chocolate-Hazelnut Pinwheels These rich, crisp cookies are filled with a creamy chocolate-hazelnut spread (available at most supermarkets) and folded into a pretty pinwheel shape.

By donna erickson Donna's Day: Creative Family Fun I’m nuts about nuts. All year-round. I try to keep a bowl of fresh, shelled California almonds replenished and within easy reach on the kitchen counter for a grab and go snack. And thanks to my Georgia-raised friend, I have a stash of tasty pecans for tossing on salads and desserts. For the holidays, our tastes shift to cashews, and this easy recipe that makes them, well, more festive. The addition of fresh rosemary and cayenne pepper is unexpected and always gets raves. Here’s our family version, which calls for your kids’ assistance. Let them take charge of pulling the fresh rosemary leaves off the stems before you mince the fragrant herb with a sharp knife. Heat up the nuts in the oven and the remaining steps come together in minutes. Double the recipe for holiday giftgiving. Instead of filling cellophane food bags, use recycled clear-glass jars. Your kids might want to make it whimsical and reminiscent of a snow globe scene by layering the seasoned cashews in the bottom third and adding a cute foil-covered chocolate snowman or ornament on top of the cashews. Anchor sprigs of rosemary upright to mimic pine trees, screw on the lid and add a tag. For an extra gift, tie a spoon to the jar for scooping up the flavorful treat. Let’s get cooking ... ROSEMARY CASHEWS 3 cups roasted, unsalted cashews

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup sugar 6 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup prepared chocolate-hazelnut spread 1. On a sheet of waxed paper, stir flour, baking powder and salt. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat sugar with butter until creamy. At low speed, beat in egg and vanilla until mixed. Gradually beat in flour mixture just until combined. 2. Divide dough in half; shape each half into a disk. Wrap each disk with plastic wrap and refrigerate about 1 hour or until firm enough to roll. (Or place dough in freezer 30 minutes.) 3. Preheat oven to 375 F. On floured surface with floured rolling pin, roll 1 disk of dough into 10-inch by 7 1/2-inch rectangle. With pastry wheel or knife, cut rectangle lengthwise into 4 strips, then cut each strip crosswise into 3 squares. Place squares, 1 inch apart, on large ungreased cookie sheet. With knife, make 1 1/2-inch cut from each corner toward center (do not cut all the way to center). Spoon 1/2 teaspoon chocolate-hazelnut spread in center of each square. Fold every other tip in to center to form pinwheel. Repeat with remaining squares. 4. Bake cookies 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool. 5. Repeat with remaining dough. Store cookies in tightly covered container up to 2 weeks. Makes 24 cookies.
