COMPILEd By NORMA B. dENNIS BACKYARD BIRDING For 24 years, the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology have sponsored a joint venture known as the Great Backyard Bird Count. This citizen-science project collects data on wild birds. Currently, more than 160,000 people worldwide, including all ages and walks of life, join the four-day count each February to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds. Participants count birds for as little as 15 minutes or as long as they wish on one or more days of the event and report their sightings online. Although this year’s count, which took place Feb. 12-15, has ended, observing the number and types of birds that appear in your yard or community can become a fascinating hobby. The Jamestown Public Library has several books about bird watching, including Birds of the Carolinas by Eloise Potter and Peregrine Spring: A Master Falconer’s Extraordinary Life with Birds of Prey by Nancy Cowen. Check out the local library to see what you can find about bird watching or other hobbies of interest.
Celebrate Recovery addresses hurts, hang-ups and habits By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com In 1991, John Baker, a recovering alcoholic, crafted a 13-page, single-spaced letter detailing a recovery program he felt was God given. He shared the letter and its vision with his pastor, Rick Warren of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., and the pastor obviously saw its value. “Great, John – go do it,” he is recorded as saying. Beginning with 43 people and four share groups, Celebrate Recovery was born. The Christ–centered program is for anyone struggling with hurt, pain or addiction of any kind. It offers a safe place to find hope and healing. Today the program is offered in approximately 35,000 churches worldwide and also can be found in recovery houses, rescue missions, universities and prisons. Locally, Celebrate Recovery is held each Friday night at Triad Church in

The program covers more than problems with substance abuse or co-dependency. It also addresses fear, anxiety, eating disorders and much more. “Everything from A to Z, we have it covered,” said Pastor Todd Howerton, Triad Church outreach pastor and ministry leader
of the program. “It addresses hurts, hangups and habits – which includes everyone. “Rather than focus on the problem, Celebrate Recovery focuses on the solution.” The program is based on eight principles Jesus shared in the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5 and on 12 Biblically based steps. High Point to hold public hearing on bypass development The City of High Point will hold a public hearing on Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. regarding what the City could do with its portion of the Jamestown Bypass. The City held a virtual meeting Jan. 12 at which several Jamestown residents stated opposition to a proposed zoning change from low-density residential to medium-density for Areas 7 and 8 of the Land Use Assessment, an area of approximately 132 acres along Dillon and Bales Chapel roads. These areas are in the High Point Extraterritorial Jurisdiction and abut the Jamestown town limits. At the January meeting, Karen Small, who lives on Bales Chapel Road and whose family is one of the two largest landowners in Area 8, voiced her opposition of the possible rezoning. “They call it medium density, but to us it’s highdensity,” Small said, pointing to the area’s current rural setting. One of the goals of High Point’s Land Use Plan is to “Ensure that development
respects the natural environment.” Bringing medium- to high-density development would destroy the natural environment, Small believes. A 76-unit residential development is currently being constructed on Bales Chapel Road, next to Bales Memorial Wesleyan Church. An available area twice that size on Dillon Road could bring another 152 units if sold. The City’s policy document does not force residents to sell their property but did suggest a developer might be interested in purchasing the land. Some residents of Areas 7 and 8 are concerned with possible annexation by High Point, but since there are no water or sewer connections in these two areas, there would not be annexation until a developer requested it. Annexation would be required for residents to receive these connections. Small said her family has been approached about annexation in the past but believes that if 60 percent of the residents do not want it the area would not be annexed. The Jamestown Bypass is a roadway project that has
been in transportation plans for more than 30 years. Currently under construction, it is proposed to open in 2022. The purpose of the new roadway is to enhance connectivity from High Point to Greensboro by connecting I-74 and I-73. The project will be a multi-lane divided road with a median and mostly controlled access. The section of the new roadway that is within High Point’s planning area is approximately 2 miles long. Because this road is on a new alignment, new areas will be opened for potential development and redevelopment. The City of High Point has conducted a land use assessment of a 1.4 square mile area along the Greensboro Road and Jamestown Bypass corridors from Montlieu Avenue in High Point to the Jamestown town limits at the Deep River. The “Jamestown Land Use Assessment Document” issued by the City of High Point is available at www.highpointnc.gov/landuseassessments. Comp Plan committee looks again at vision statement By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee for Jamestown will meet Feb. 22 for the first time since October. This meeting will be a continuation of a discussion about the vision statement that will be included in the update to the Comprehensive Plan. Prior to the October meeting, Vagn Hansen of Benchmark Consulting, asked the Steering Committee to submit suggestions for the vision statement. “The current statement was adopted in 2016 but it is very long,” Hansen said. A vision statement conveys the Town’s hopes for the future. It is intended as a
guide to help the Town make decisions that align with its declared set of values and governing principles. It can be thought of as a roadmap to where the Town wants to be within a certain timeframe. The statement sets the foundation and provides direction for the Comprehensive Plan. It will form a basis for the goals and objectives, as well as more detailed topics that will be developed later in the process. Vision statements are future-oriented, concise, clear, challenging, inspiring and specific to the Town. In October, many of the committee members said the vision statement must reflect the small-town feel it has enjoyed SEE PLAN, PAGe 6

railroad continued from front “Their role in this Underground Railroad was critical.” Israel said newspapers ran ads by owners searching for fugitive slaves. Many of these ads mention New Garden “as a likely place the fugitives were headed where they could get help from friends and from free blacks.” New Garden is now part of the western side of Greensboro and was home to New Garden Boarding School, now Guilford College, a school founded by Quakers, or Friends. Quakers were known to be antislavery, having come into existence following a civil war in England. Many relocated to the American colonies. Carter said even as far back as 1688, Quakers in Germantown, Penn., were concerned that their members owned slaves. Most of these Quakers who had escaped persecution in Europe felt it odd that Quakers in the colonies would be involved “in such a terrible institution.” In 1688 they signed the Germantown Remonstrance, which basically stated as Christians they should embody the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”(Matthew 7:12) “If you don’t want to be slaves yourselves, why enslave others,” Carter said. He added that those Quakers who owned slaves resisted the Remonstrance, citing how economically enriching it was to have slaves.

“They had a lot invested in this money producing, wealth-producing institution of slavery,” Carter said. By the early 1700s, more Quakers became involved in the anti-slavery movement. The Yearly Meeting of the Organization of Quakers in North Carolina became anti-slavery by 1778. This began the migration of antislavery Quakers from Pennsylvania into the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The Mendenhall, Starbuck and Coffin families of the Jamestown area were part of this migration. There was a problem, however. It was against the law to manumit, or free, an enslaved person. To get around the law, those who owned slaves handed over the title of their slaves to the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends, which at one time had over 1,000 titles of enslaved persons who were allowed to be free, or Quaker Free Negroes. These persons were allowed to live and work as freedmen. “By the early 1800s, Friends were engaged in illegal activities,” Carter said. “The Underground Railroad.” By 1810 Quakers were involved in manumission societies, in which owners freed their slaves. Vestal Coffin helped establish the first manumission society in Guilford County. Jamestown’s Richard Mendenhall was a charter member in 1816 and was later state president but there is no

This is only one of two remaining falsebottom wagons in existence from this time period. The other one is at the Levi Coffin House in Fountain City, Ind., which became known as the Grand Central Station of the Underground, as it served as a safe haven for more than 1,000 freedom seekers. While the Mendenhalls believed in anti-slavery, some of them still owned slaves. George C. Mendenhall, brother to Richard, was one of the largest slave owners in Guilford County, but George C. inherited many slaves when he married Eliza Dunn in 1824. He was subsequently disowned by his Quaker meeting for owning slaves. But freeing slaves could
be difficult. It was George’s second marriage to Delphina Gardner, a well-regarded anti-slavery Quaker minister, that changed the course of his life. The couple went about legally procuring their freedom. It’s known that George personally took 28 of his slaves to Ohio. Many of the Mendenhall slaves learned trades before they were freed. Some people called free Black people “free slaves,” indicating their status was basically no different from that of a slave. “It varied from place to place but certainly in Guilford County there were a small number of [free] people, but a significant number, and they operated with fairly ease of movement,” Israel said. “They could move from place to place. They could own property. They were respected and the law respected them so that if you posed as a free
Black person it was definitely a threat to the slave system.” She added that fugitives often disguised themselves as free and used false court documents declaring they had been freed, whether born free or manumitted by the court. These papers had to be on their person at all times. This and other videos and programs are available on the High Point Museum YouTube channel www.youtube.com/c/ HighPointMuseum. recovery continued from front “It is not taken from man’s wisdom,” Howerton said. “All the answers are in the scripture and have been there all along. “People are seeing more than ever that we need one another. God uses others to help keep us on the road to recovery. In the New Testament alone there are 59 ‘one-another’ commandments, and we cannot do ‘one-another’ without ‘each other.’” Howerton says he was an alcoholic and drug addict for years, but was set free by the grace of God. He noted that the Lord also used Celebrate Recovery to restore his marriage. “That is one reason my wife Dana and I are partial to the ministry,” he said. The couple began serving in Celebrate Recovery at other churches in 2005. They did not feel led to hold the program at their own church, rather referred those interested to nearby locations.

“Two years ago, when some of those programs closed, we felt like the Lord was saying it was time to start CR at Triad Church,” Howerton said. “Our church has five pastors that serve as a team and I cannot say enough about the support the other pastors and the congregation have given the program. This is not an easy ministry, but everything we do is to glorify God.” Individuals do not have to be a member of Triad Church or even a Christian to attend. “We say you do not have to believe what we do, but we believe it unashamedly,” Howerton said. “In a nutshell, we believe Jesus came to set us free. “We have some who attend the meetings who claim to be atheists, but they keep coming back. To see real peace and freedom is attractive. I think they feel the love here. They think it is

us, but it is really God. He wants us to love and honor Him and one another and bring hope to the hopeless. We have a place open where all can feel loved.” Celebrate Recovery meetings at Triad Church begin at 7 p.m. with a large, general group service, which includes worshipful singing, followed on alternate weeks by a personal testimony about recovery or a lesson. People then break into small open-share groups for discussion. These groups are gender and issue specific. Guidelines are strictly observed to safeguard confidentiality. “We try to provide an environment where people feel free to share,” Howerton said. Triad Church is located at 705 Sunshine Way, Greensboro. To learn more about Celebrate Recovery, contact Howerton at 336-662-9905 or email celebraterecovery@Triad-Church.com.

proof that the Mendenhall Homeplace on West Main Street was ever used as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Levi Coffin, Vestal’s cousin, lived in the New Garden community and, as a child, discovered fugitive slaves hiding in the woods on what is now the Guilford College campus. This discovery stayed with him and as a young man he began working in the anti-slavery movement. In 1819 he helped set up the first long-distance route of escape for slaves, going from North Carolina to Indiana. Vestal Coffin was the first conductor and John Demery the first passenger. It took six weeks on foot to reach Richmond, Ind. Levi Coffin was given the nickname “ President of the Underground Railroad” for helping so many slaves to freedom. Coffin and others left memoirs and both talk of how they worked with free Black people and enslaved people in this region. But some of the “leaders” got in trouble with the law for their actions. Israel mentioned Joshua Stanley, a trustee of New Garden Boarding School. Stanley and his wife were taken to court, accused of working with Deep River Friends Meeting in High Point and with free Blacks to manumit slaves. The outcome is not known. Casseroles are one-dish wonders
By angela shelf medearis the kitchen diva
I was looking for a baking pan in the back of a cupboard and inadvertently discovered I have quite a collection of casserole dishes. I started thinking about all the casserole recipes I’ve collected over the years. When I was a newlywed and novice cook almost 46 years ago, preparing a casserole was my “go-to” dinner recipe. I decided to do some research on the origin of the casserole, and I discovered a photo of an ancient casserole dish in a museum in Athens, Greece. Casseroles, both the dish and various recipes, have had a long and interesting culinary history. There’s some debate about the origin of the term “casserole” but most culinary historians think it’s from the French word for “saucepan.” Casseroles come in a variety of styles, but what they all have in common is that they are typically a large, deep dish used both in the oven and as a serving vessel. The word casserole also is used for the food cooked and served in the dish. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America provides detailed information about casseroles: “Casserole cookery has been around since prehistoric times, when it was discovered that cooking food slowly in a tightly covered clay vessel softened fibrous meats and blended succulent juices. With the addition or subtractions of leftovers or inexpensive cuts of meat, the casserole is flexible and economical in terms of both ingredients and effort. The classic casserole, a
French dish, was originally made with a mound of cooked rice. Fannie Meritt Farmer’s Boston Cooking School Cook Book (1896) had one casserole recipe, for Casserole of Rice and Meat, to be steamed for 45 minutes and served with tomato sauce. “In the 20th century, casseroles took on a distinctive American identity. During the depression of the 1890s, the economic casserole provided a welcome way to stretch meat, fish and poultry. Certain items also were scarce during World War I, and leftovers were turned into casserole meals. The same was true during the Great Depression of the 1930s.” The casseroles we know today became popular in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Typically, casseroles are composed of a meat, starch, creamy sauce (after 1934, it was usually a creamed soup from a can) and a vegetable. Casseroles are an economical, one-pot meal, and can be prepared in advance for breakfast, lunch or dinner. During the 1950s-’70s, casseroles became an easy way for a busy cook, and a modern workforce composed of women, to prepare the family meal ahead of time. Today, casseroles have been updated to include a variety of ingredients from lobster and tofu to made-from-scratch sauces and locally grown vegetables. The shape, size and construction materials of casserole dishes have also changed over its centuries-old history. However, the purpose of the casserole is still the same, to bring a familiar container of comfort food to the ones we love. Bring a little comfort to your

continued from front for years and include the historic character of the town. “Growth is going to happen and we need to figure out a way that makes sense for the town and not grow for growth’s sake,” said Cory Rayborn. “You have to figure out how to make [growth] fit into the whole and not be something that sticks out.” “You all said the same thing in different ways,” Hansen said of the group. “There is not a drastic change in the direction Jamestown should go.” He provided eight bullet points of visions to consider: maintain small-town charm, preserve historic character, protect natural and cultural resources, promote small businesses, be inclusive and allow planned growth, provide recreation and education, connect neighborhoods and be friendly and healthy. The virtual Zoom meeting for the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee will be held at 4 p.m. and streamed on the Town of Jamestown’s YouTube page at www. youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC.
The current Jamestown vision statement, adopted in 2016, reads: “Jamestown will maintain its historic heritage and neighborly atmosphere while actively managing growth associated with being located next to larger neighboring cities. Jamestown will maintain a small-town environment with a vital Main Street, residential neighborhoods, and its historical character as its focus. Jamestown will continue its commitment to recreation and community wellness by maintaining our walkways, Jamestown Park & Golf Course and the Wrenn Miller Park. Jamestown will be attractive to both young and old with a variety of housing choices and price ranges. Jamestown neighborhoods, schools, businesses, historic districts and parks are key building blocks for Jamestown. We will reserve areas for each type of use while buffering each from the other as possible. We seek an attractive town that benefits from its historic sense of place and is well-landscaped and accessible to pedestrians. We will create a favorable atmosphere for compatible commerce, ones which are clean and provide good job opportunities for our residents.”
