Golf figures increased last three months By caroL Brooks FreelaNCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Despite 41 bad weather days and four days of closing for aerification or holidays, the Jamestown Park Golf course showed a profit in the first six months of the fiscal year 2019-20 compared to the previous year. “Green fee revenue was up 10.5 percent and cart and range revenue was up 14 percent,” said Ross Sanderlin, Golf and Recreation Director for Jamestown. “Rounds of golf were up 13 percent. That’s 1,700 more rounds than the previous period.” He added that food and beverage purchases were up 7.5 percent. Finance Director Judy Gallman agreed and provided figures for December 2019. “For the month of December 2019 in comparison to December 2018, revenues were up approximately 39 percent. There were 16 bad weather days in December 2019 as opposed to 22 days in December 2018. “Golf rounds for December 2019 were 1,027 while golf rounds for December 2018 were 709, an increase of approximately 45 percent.” However, she noted expenditures were up in December 2019 by approximately 9.5 percent in comparison to December 2018 expenditures. “The resulting net operating loss for the golf course for the month of December 2019, before capital outlay, amounts to minus $56,568, while the net operating loss in December 2018 before capital outlay

was minus $58,142,” Gallman said. “Grill operations net loss was minus $1,535 in December 2019 as opposed to minus $2,648 net loss in December 2018.” So while the overall golf course operating figures show a loss, it is less than in 2018. Cold weather accounts for some of the bad weather days the course experiences. The course closes during very cold temperatures and maintenance crews cover the greens with tarps to protect them. The grill is closed as well. “Clubhouse rentals were up and we have had several requests already for the Spring,” Sanderlin said. He added that some groups use the clubhouse several times a week. Even though the greens have been covered several times recently, the area has also experienced unseasonably warm weather, drawing golfers to the course.

“The weather is crazy,” said John Crowe, golf maintenance superintendent. “Bermuda grass is growing now. It’s a warm season grass.” He added that his crew monitors soil and air temperatures periodically to help predict when covers should be placed over the greens. “Covering greens when temperatures fall below 25 degrees or lower for an extended period of time is another tool that helps us endure the winter months,” Crow said. “2017-2018 was a very harsh winter where we covered for 13 days straight and a total of 27 days through the winter.” The maintenance crew has been watering and fertilizing throughout the winter. They have also targeted trees to remove around greens that do not get enough sunlight for the grass to grow.

Members of the Jamestown Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee met for the first time Jan. 25 to hear a project overview and timeline by Jason Epley of Benchmark Planning in Charlotte. “The plan serves as the primary policy guide over the next decade and beyond for land use, development, capital investments and growth management decisions,” Epley said. “The plan will include clearly stated strategies for development that prioritize key projects for implementation by both the public and private sectors.” Benchmark has already begun background research on the project and plans to hold several meetings in February with what the company calls “stakeholders” [business and civic leaders, police, fire, churches, town officials, schools] to get their opinions on the future of Jamestown. Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department’s Division Chief Derek Carson presented the yearly report at the Jamestown Town Council Meeting on Jan. 21. “PSFD responded to 3,568 calls last year (July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019),” said Carson. That figure reflected an increase of 172 from the previous year. Of

Capt. Matt Holder of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office Jamestown office (District 3) gave an annual report of crime in Jamestown at the January Town Council meeting. There were 40 Part One crimes (murder and non-negligent homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny/theft a n d arson) reported in 2019 in District 3. They included 21 larcenies and 10 burglaries. There were also three motor vehicle thefts, one robbery, three aggravated assaults and two rapes. The figures indicate a decrease

of 19 total crimes from the previous year and a decrease of 29 crimes from 2018. A five-year comparison of Part One crimes indicates that recent statistics have been holding steady to previous years. Capt. Holder, Lt. N.Z. Wiseman and Det. Sgt. C.A. Rogers lead the Jamestown division of the Guilford County Sheriff’s office, located at 211 Hillstone Drive. Holder said the division has four squads, which cover different zones. He was proud that his division had more officer-initiated responses than dispatch-initiated responses last year, 8,920 versus 8,373, meaning his officers are not see JaMestoWn, Page 2

CRIME REPORT

CoNtINued FroM FroNt of the town will take place over the course of 2020 and the committee considered surveys and social media engagement so everyone in the town could have their voice heard. Tentative plans call for an “Envision Jamestown Workshop” in May, a “Placemaking and Community Design Workshop” in June, and “Managing Growth in the Face of Change” session in July or August. More information on these meetings will be published when available. The 12-member Steering Committee’s role is to review and discuss information, ideas, and recommendations prior to public presentation and assist with public outreach and engagement. They are charged with identifying issues and concerns of the town and residents, with developing a vision for the plan and setting new goals

and objectives. The committee will give final recommendation to the plan prior to it advancing to the Planning Board and, then, the Town Council. Jamestown’s first comprehensive plan, then called the Land Development Plan, was published in 1964. It must have worked fine for the town, because there wasn’t an update until December 2007, 43 years after the original. “The Comprehensive Plan is the guiding document that community leaders refer to when making decisions about zoning and other laws that guide how our town will develop in the future,” said Matthew Johnson, Jamestown planning director. “The Land Development Ordinances are the rules.” “It’s really not about the future,” remarked committee member Rich Salyards. Companies like Bench-

mark lead committees in forming such plans, but acknowledge that each community is different. “We don’t want a cookie cutter Comprehensive Plan,” said Martha Wolfe, who is representing the

Town Council on the committee. “We want questions about Jamestown.” A website, www.EnvisionJamestown.com, will be available soon so residents can keep up with the progress of the committee.

HAVE YOUR SAY As part of the initial phase of creating a new Comprehensive Plan, there will be a series of listening sessions on Feb. 11 and 12. These listening sessions are intended to help identify issues, ideas and information that will help guide the consulting team as they conduct background research for the planning process. Stakeholders in Jamestown [business and civic leaders, police, fire, churches, town officials, schools] are invited to attend but anyone is welcome to the sessions. Feedback is valued. The Town would appreciate the participation in the listening sessions of anyone who is available on either day. The meetings will be in 50-minute time blocks scheduled each day at: 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to participate should respond to Johnson at mjohnson@jamestown-nc.gov or 336-4547386 with the days (Feb. 11 and/or 12) and the time blocks that you would be available to attend a session at Jamestown Town Hall.

CoNtINued FroM FroNt that number, 2,034 were medical incidents, 254 were fire-related, 313 were motor vehicle accidents and 667 were service or good intent incidents. The Jamestown station #46 is staffed by one lieutenant, two firefighters and several resident firefighters. There are 15 firefighters each day broken up into three shifts, making certain a firefighter is on duty 24 hours a day. It continues to be the second-busiest station within the PinecroftSedgefield Fire Department, behind Mackay Road, with 767 calls in 2018-19, an increase of 26 calls. Of those calls, the 507 medical incidents greatly outnumbered any other calls, typical of most departments, but accounting for 70 percent in Jamestown. Many of those calls were to Shannon Gray Rehabilitation and Recovery Center. The Jamestown station responded to 39 fire-

related incidents, 30 motor vehicle accidents and 87 service/good intent incidents. There were also 104 fire alarm events. Responding to calls is not the only duty of the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department. Fire prevention and education is important. The department held many educational programs for the public during the year. Some of those events were held at Station 46 in Jamestown. A total of 3,323 adults and children participated in the 34 programs in Jamestown. Additionally, local firefighters installed 25 smoke alarms. Carson urged homeowners to contact the station to have smoke alarms installed. The year’s insurance inspection resulted in a class rating of 2 in Jamestown and 3 in the rest of the department, the same as the previous year. The lower the rating is, the better. Very few fire departments in the state have the Class 2 rating. In Jamestown, property value exposed to fire was $10,175,640 but property value lost from fire

was $11,400, meaning $10,164,240 in property value was saved from fire in 2018-19. Carson was proud that the reaction time for the Jamestown station had gone from 2.13 minutes to 1.52 minutes in 2018-19 but since then has dropped to 1.42 minutes. Travel time dropped from 5.53 minutes to 5.43 minutes in 2018-19 but has now dropped to 4.48 minutes, meaning Station #46 is not only reacting to the alarms faster, but are getting to the sites quicker. He added that with the closing of East Fork Road, the High Point Fire Department would respond to calls on the west side of the roadblock. According to the PSFD website, “In the fall of 1951 there were several bad house fires in the Pinecroft-Sedgefield vicinity. Several residents of the area decided to call a meeting at the Guilford Courthouse to organize a fire department. Robert Neely, a lawyer and resident of the district, made the application for incorporation. A meeting was held in his office on March

The new pumper was put into service on Jan. 28, 1953. The truck was housed in the rear of the Gate City Truck Stop on High Point Road, which was leased for $1 per year from Frank Joyce. The Jamestown station houses three engines and a Guilford County Emergency Services vehicle. The total operating budget for PSFD for fiscal year 2018-19 is $3.95 million, with $527,590 supplied by the Town of Jamestown.

He urged residents to lock their vehicles and to use Crimestoppers and NextDoor to report crimes.

When will it be too late to get her fixed? — Jessica C., Asbury Park, New Jersey DEAR JESSICA: It’s never too late to spay or neuter a pet, but the veterinarian will recommend that the procedure be done soon. Shelter pups are often neutered as young as eight weeks, but with dogs already in a home, vets sometimes prefer to wait a few months until they’ve developed more. This helps prevent potential problems of early spaying like urinary

incontinence, hip dysplasia and even cancer when a dog is older. You should take Tara into the vet as soon as possible anyway. She needs to start getting some key vaccinations that will keep her healthy as she grows up. She shouldn’t be around other puppies until she’s had her first few rounds of shots. Some of those vaccinations are required by your city and state, and she will need to be licensed — all of which the vet can get you set up with. If you’re worried about the cost, check around with different veterinary practices to see if they have introductory specials for new pet owners that include a checkup, core vaccinations and the spaying procedure. Trump removal would be insane By rich LoWry It’s easy to forget what the Senate impeachment trial is supposed to be about. It’s not a fight over whether the Senate will call a couple of witnesses that the House couldn’t, or didn’t bother to, obtain on its own. The underlying question is whether the United States Senate will impose the most severe sanction it has ever inflicted on any chief executive, voting to remove a president for the first time in the history of the country and doing it about 10 months from his reelection bid. This is a truly radical step that, if it ever came about, would do more damage to the legitimacy of our political system than President Donald Trump’s underlying offense. If Trump were actually convicted, the 2020 election would proceed under a cloud of illegitimacy. Tens of millions of Trump voters wouldn’t accept the result. They’d see it as an inside job to deny the incumbent president a chance to run for reelection, without a single voter having a direct say. The GOP would be brought to its knees by internal bloodletting, a prospect that Democrats surely would welcome, especially given that it would deliver them the presidency. Republicans would be out for revenge, and instead of a halcyon return to normalcy, our politics would be even more poisonous than before. Democrats argue that Trump can’t stay in office because he’s such a threat to the integrity of our elections. But the portrayal of Trump’s Ukraine scheme as “election interference,” as the Democrats always say, is tendentious and inapt. If the Ukrainians had complied with the Trump team’s pressure to announce an investigation of the

energy company Burisma, it wouldn’t have changed one vote in 2020, even if former Vice President Joe Biden eventually is the Democratic nominee. The fact is that impeachment, as my colleague Ramesh Ponnuru points out, is a weak check on the presidency. It requires a supermajority of the country to remove a president and one of the political parties being willing to nullify the choice of its own voters for president and an election he won. Both the Trump and Clinton impeachments show that this is a hateful prospect for the president’s party. The best case for what the Democrats are doing now is that Republicans impeached Clinton in the 1990s with little or no hope for conviction in the Senate, and turnabout is fair play. But it’s time to conclude that this is a failed model of impeachment. It depends on a process that diverts the time and energy of the nation’s political institutions as if the survival of a presidency is at stake, even when everyone knows it isn’t. Congress can hold hearings on a president’s conduct, subpoena witnesses and documents and fight the executive with full force if they aren’t produced, hold officials in contempt, withhold funding, deny the executive traditional forms of interbranch comity and, if it wants to put down a longlasting marker, censure the president. But it needn’t drag the country through a melodrama based on the fiction that any president who hasn’t crashed to, say, a 25% approval rating is going to be removed by his own party — in other words, exactly what Adam Schiff and his managers are doing now. Sneezing can provoke this unusual vertigo By keith roach, M.D. to your good health DEAR DR. ROACH: After many years of various treatments, including allergy shots, food studies and an ear tube, I was recently diagnosed with “semicircular canal dehiscence.” Can you explain what this is and the treatment (besides surgery) to relieve the symptoms of inner ear pressure, dizziness and pressure and pulsation in the head? Are there any medications? — J.D.W. DEAR J.D.W.: Semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is an unusual cause of vertigo. Vertigo is sometimes referred to as dizziness, but “dizziness” may refer to both unsteadiness (a feeling that you are going to pass out, which medically is referred to as “presyncope”) or

true vertigo (a sensation of movement when the person is actually still). The vertigo in semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is different from most other causes of vertigo because it can be provoked by loud noises, coughing or sneezing. It is caused by abnormally thin bone in the semicircular canals, part of the organ of balance in the inner ear. The diagnosis is confirmed by a CT scan of the temporal bone. The only treatment I have read that consistently is effective is surgery. An ear tube is sometimes tried in people who have symptoms with pressure changes. Medications used in some cases of vertigo, such as meclizine (Antivert), usually will make SCDS symptoms worse in the long term. Anti-nausea medications like ondansetron (Zofran) may help if nausea is severe, but

or authorized representative of either the Trustee or the holder of the note make any representation or warranty relating to the title or any physical, environmental, health or safety conditions existing in, on, at or relating to the property being offered for sale, and any and all responsibilities or liabilities arising out of or in any way relating to any such condition are expressly disclaimed. The purchaser will have no further remedy. ROACH: My father is 72 years old. This year he was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate. For now, the doctor has inserted a catheter. My question is: What process or what treatment is best at his age? We are in the Philippines. — M.M.C. DEAR M.M.C.: Enlargement of the prostate gland is a common problem for men in their 70s and older. Sometimes it gets so bad that a man cannot urinate at all or the pressure in the bladder is at risk of damaging the kidney. In those cases, a catheter often is used as a temporizing measure. Unfortu-

nately, a catheter causes inflammation, so it may actually worsen the prostate problem temporarily while still protecting the kidneys. Because of this, the catheter usually needs to be kept in only for about one to two weeks. During this time, medication usually is started to try to reduce prostate size. For most men, a benign (not cancerous) enlarged prostate can be treated with medication — an alpha blocker, like tamsulosin, sometimes with a second medicine, like finasteride. If that doesn’t work, there are several surgical options. His doctor needs to be sure that the enlarged prostate isn’t cancer. A physical exam and blood tests may answer that question; other times, a biopsy is needed. There is no best treatment for

everyone. It depends on how large his prostate is, any other medical problems he may have and the expertise of the doctor treating him. In the United States, the options include a traditional surgery, called a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP); laser-based treatments; other heat-based treatments (microwave, water vapor ablation and radiowave); and even more newer treatments that are less wellstudied. In general, medical therapy is worth a try for most men before considering surgery.

Rotary Club recognizes parade volunteers By norMa B. dennis FreelaNCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com For members of the Jamestown Rotary Club and their guests, the first meeting of 2020 was a time to relax over dinner and celebrate. The Jan. 28 event focused on recognizing the many volunteers who helped make Jamestown Christmas Parade a success. The meeting began as usual with Martin Senell enthusiastically leading songs to get people on their feet and smiling. Following a recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test by the group, club president Geoff Swan introduced special Rotary District 7690 guests – District Governor Randy and Reida Perkins and past District Governor Dave McCoy. In addition to the Jamestown Rotary Club, other groups recognized for assisting with the parade included the Ragsdale YMCA, Jamestown Business Association, the Rotaract Club from Guilford Technical Community College and the Town of Jamestown. “The town pays a large percent of the parade costs,” acknowledged parade chair Cliff Paddock. “Also, a lot of its staff are actively involved on parade day and after the parade. That is the reason we can have it.” Organization for the parade begins during the summer. The 2019 Christmas parade included 98 entries. Since rain had washed away chalked lineup guides in the past, Paddock made special cones to mark the spot for parade entries. At the dinner, individuals from each organization that helped with the parade made introductions of some volunteers from their group. They were Stevra Hudson of the YMCA, Deborah Palmer president of the Jamestown Business Association, Michael Greth with the GTCC Rotaract Club and Mayor Lynn Montgomery for the town. Montgomery presented Jeff Greeson, recently retired Jamestown Public Works director, with a gift for all the work he had done with the parade throughout the years.

(Below) 5376 cub scouts from Bsa Pack 17, which meets at Jamestown United Methodist church, won first place for the Best decorated Float. “Everyone recognized tonight is a volunteer and gives their time to serve others,” Montgomery said. “I want to challenge everybody to engage in small acts of service in the community all the time. It can be as simple as picking up a piece of paper from the sidewalk or holding open these heavy doors at the post office for someone.” The highlight of the evening was Palmer’s presentation of the JBA parade awards. The Best Decorated Float went to Cub Scouts from BSA Pack 17 for their decorated canoe. Shannon Arnold designed the float, but the Cub Scouts helped paint it. “It was a group effort,” Arnold said. The Best Decorated Car was awarded to Michael Greth of Seniors Helping Seniors. The car was a replica of a 1934 British Morgan three-wheeler driven by Burke Ivey. “I get so much joy out of the Christmas parade,” Greth said. “I like seeing kids and young families enjoy the parade. It is important to me.” This is the second year a car belonging to Greth received an award for Best Decorated.

Honorable Mention went to a Christian motorcycle club, which was a hit among parade attendees with a dog riding in a sidecar. The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self” and Jamestown club members are already planning another service project, their third annual fundraiser golf tournament. It will be held at the Jamestown Park Golf Course on June 5. Proceeds from the tournament will be presented

to Southern Roots restaurant owner Lisa Hawley, founder of Feeding Lisa’s Kids. “Last year we gave her $4,800 dollars,” Paddock said. “This year we would like to double the amount if possible. But we need golfers and sponsors to participate in the event.” To learn more about becoming part of the golf tournament, contact chair Russ Jacks at jrjlbj@aol.com.
