Jamestown wells Fargo closing

Wells Fargo has announced its latest round of branch closings, including the Jamestown location at 124 E. Main St. This “branch will permanently close June 7, 2023,” according to a letter sent to customers.

The closing is part of the current plan to close 17 branches nationwide, according to its latest disclosure to the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. At least 54 Wells Fargo branches have closed in North Carolina since July 2020 and more than 6,600 have closed since Wells Fargo took over Wachovia in 2009.

Other Wells Fargo braches that will remain open are located at 2613 Eastchester Dr. and 1700 N. Main St., both in High Point.

Southwest Elementary has been collecting boxes of cereal for A Simple Gesture, a non-profit that provides food for those facing shortages.

Students were challenged to collect 700 (100 per grade level) and, if they reached their goal, staff promised to line the boxes up like dominoes and allow the children to watch. So far students have collected 773 boxes. Setup was scheduled for Feb. 28.

council holds busy February meeting

Erin Wynia and Jordan Cansler of the North Carolina League of Municipalities updated the Town Council on the League’s responsibility to represent the Town’s views before the N.C. General Assembly, U.S. Congress and administrative rule-making authorities.

“Each year at the N.C. General Assembly, a number of bills are filed that would have major and often damaging effects on municipal authority,” said Town Manager Matthew Johnson. “NCLM staff and members typically spend substantial time each session working to stop or lessen the effects of these legislative proposals, or others which have major impact on municipalities but do not fall under the subject matter areas approved as a part of NCLM’s Legislative Goals. Often, these pieces of legislation instead run contrary to the League’s Core

a

Municipal Principles.”

Councilmember Martha Wolfe mentioned that the General Assembly is considering taking all zoning authority away from cities. She believes this would be dangerous to the municipalities. Wynia was aware of this and the League is looking into what it can do.

to

The subject of short-term rentals came up as well, with the City of Greensboro recently considering permit requirements for rental companies such as Airbnb. The Jamestown Council had discussed this several years ago but made no decisions. Wynia said this was part of the League’s agenda as well.

Board to review park, golf course strategic plan

The strategic plan for the Jamestown Park and Golf Course will be revealed to the Jamestown Planning Board at its March 6 meeting.

The plan is based on information collected by the National Golf Foundation, Inc. (NFG). According to the executive summary, “The Town required a strategic review of the golf facility as part of its ongoing plan to improve the golf course and maintain the facility for future generations.”

Other findings state, “The facility is in mostly good condition, although some areas of concern were noted by NGF consultants like damaged cart paths, inefficient irrigation, a few spots of inadequate drainage and all bunkers in need of repair. The NGF team also found a dedicated staff of professionals working to present an outstanding golf course to the public, but also facing economic challenges that limit their ability to succeed.

“Jamestown Park GC produced total topline revenue of just over $1.14 million in FY2022, an amount that represented a recent peak in performance. On average, JPGC is generating $37.89 per round in 2022, only slightly lower than the national standard of $40.45 per round.

“With total direct operating expenses totaling around $1.5 million, it is clear that Jamestown Park GC is not able to cover its operating requirements nor provide any funding to make investments for the future of the property. As a result, the Town is subsidizing the golf operation with over $350,000 in support in each of the last five years. This current financial condition is

not unique in municipal golf, as most public-sector golf facilities in the U.S. also require outside support. However, the size and proportion of this support in Jamestown seems much higher than normal due mostly to a small revenue profile as opposed to high expenses. Going forward, the Town will have to make some changes to this operation to help improve the revenue collected and help reduce the loss on this golf operation.

“In 2022, the NGF found a golf course facility being operated as a public accommodation rather than a golf course business. As a result, the quality of maintenance, customer service and marketing/promotion of the facility all need considerable improvement.”

High-priority items are the cart paths, trees, drainage, bunkers and irrigation repairs with an estimate of $868,000-$1,1 million. Clubhouse enhancement is another $800,000-$1 million, bringing the total cost of capital projects to $1.6 million-$2.1 million.

Jamestown Park and the 18-hole golf course were constructed in 1974 and is owned and operated by the Town. Extensive renovations to the golf course were made around 2011 and to the clubhouse during 2015.

The 85-page plan is within the Parks & Recreation Committee March 6 packet available at https://www.jamestown-nc. gov/event/view/parks-recreation-committee-meeting-march-6th.

Scott Coakley, parks superintendent, will update the committee on the Accessibility for Parks Grant and general parks and recreation updates.

The public is invited to attend the 6 p.m. meeting in the Civic Center.

Capt. Yousef Sansour of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, District 3, gave the crime report for 2022. There were 943 total calls for service in Jamestown. Of these, 210 were citations and of the 225 reports, one was a breaking and entering, nine were assaults and six were for shoplifting.

“The numbers are low,” Sansour said. “It’s the nature of Jamestown. There was not a rash of crime.”

He added that the Sheriff’s Office is looking at what he called “hot spots” that have large numbers of crimes. Deputies are asking businesses to make certain their parking lots are lit at night and that businesses have alarms. They are also looking at how to lessen porch piracy. Wolfe questioned the effectiveness of the popular Ring doorbells and Sansour believes they are a deterrent. Deputies may ask homeowners for access to the camera footage if a crime has been committed in the neighborhood.

He noted that they were recent-

Council learns of ARPA funding projects

In the fall of 2021, the Town of Jamestown was awarded $1,430,000 as part of the American Rescue Plan Act. Half of the payment was sent in July 2021 and the remainder the following July. The ARPA is a way to ease the country’s recovery from the economic and health effects of Covid-19. Some of the uses include infrastructure, services and programs to contain and lessen the spread of Covid-19, capital investments in public facilities, broadband improvements and investments in housing and neighborhoods. Municipalities have until 2024 to fully plan how they will use the funds but have until 2026 to spend them.

There have been several revisions to the guidelines as to how the funds can be spent. This has delayed many municipalities from taking advantage of the windfall as of yet.

At its Feb. 21 meeting, the Jamestown Town Council learned of three contracts for their approval for projects using the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds Agreement between Guilford County and Town of Jamestown.

The ARPA funds from the county will be used for the following projects in Jamestown:

• partF and accessibility for parks (aFp) project – $315,000. These funds will be used for the PARTF grant match and the AFP grant match. Funding will be used to improve Jamestown Park with two new shelters, a dog park for large and small dogs, relocating the sand volleyball area, developing a natural play area and trail, renovating the basketball court and sidewalks.

PTA plans recipe for fun

Mix a cup of running with a tablespoon of walking, add in some lively games and a dash of community spirit, blend well with student participation and you have the recipe for a fun-filled morning at Jamestown Elementary School.

Officially called the Tiger Trot, the event will be held March 25 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the

school and adjacent neighborhood. It will open with a patriotic focus led by a student and include a 5K and Fun Walk, bounce house, food trucks, face painting, music, visit by local firefighters with their truck and an auction of creative artwork by JES students.

“In the past we relied on the aid of a fundraising company to organize and conduct the event,” said Christy Gomez, treasurer of the Jamestown Elementary PTA. “But they would

only come during the school day and we felt that did not give working parents or the community an opportunity to participate.

The PTA officers decided to organize this year’s fundraiser. It has proven to be a huge task, but I think it will be worth the effort.

“This way, all the money we raise from participants, sponsors and pledges will directly benefit the school.”

Several members of Mary Browning’s family attended to receive a resolution honoring the late historian, who passed away in January. Browning was an early member of the Historic Jamestown Society and wrote several books on the history of the town as well as worked with genealogy.

The Council unanimously approved awarding a contract for renovations at the Town Hall to DreamBuilt Construction, lnc., in the amount of $381,468. DreamBuilt Construction, Inc., was the lowest responsive responsible bidder.

Waugh Asphalt, Inc., was awarded the contract for $108,220 for paving of the driveway at the Public Services Facility. The road has always been rough on

other officers include Zaira Bullins, president; Aubrey Canniff-Kesecker, vice president; and Adonya Douglas, secretary.

The fun run is free for JES students and $2 for family or community members, who are invited to walk with the students. Students can ask for pledges from others to earn rewards or a T-shirt. The walk will include laps on a course beside the school. Students in grades K-2 will begin at 10:15 a.m. and those in grades 3-5 begin the course at 10:45 a.m.

Registration for the 5K begins at 8:30 a.m. and the run starts at 9 a.m. The course begins and ends at the car loop beside the school. It includes one lap around the fun run track and winds through streets in the original Forestdale neighborhood.

vehicles and requires frequent maintenance. Paving the surface should provide a durable surface that will be more accessible in all types of weather and it should reduce wear and tear on vehicles.

Council also unanimously approved awarding a contract to Republic Services for recycling

“There will be volunteers at intersections to monitor traffic,” Gomez said. “Also water stations at PTA members’ houses along the way.”

The cost to participate in the 5K is $25. For an extra $10 each person can receive a Tiger Trot T-shirt. Fleet Feet Sports in High Point is providing prizes for the top three males and females in the event.

The Tiger Trot is open to the community. Those who do not wish to run or walk may support the students by purchasing tickets for the bounce house or face painting or by biding on their artwork. Donations also will be welcomed. Proceeds will be used to fund a computer software reading program for all grades. It includes stories to read and games to play that support reading and

processing. The Town will change to blue recycling toters the week of April 10. Full details about the recycling program, including a change in pickup dates, will be sent to residents and an article will also be in an upcoming Jamestown News. Further information is available at www.jamestowncando-nc.gov.

In his manager’s report, Johnson announced that bids for bathrooms at Wrenn Miller Park came in over budgeted amounts and the project has been put on hold and will be placed back into the 202324 budget.

The Council will hold special budget meetings at 9 a.m. March 23 and April 14 in the Civic Center. These will be the second and third such meetings this year. The public is invited to attend.

• stormwater infrastructure project – $210,000. Funding will replace a crucial stormwater infrastructure feature at Jamestown Park Golf Course. The stormwater project will prevent failure of a small dam adjacent to a major water supply lake.

• sidewalk projects – $2,294,795. The Town will construct almost a mile of sidewalks on the following streets and roads: East Main Street from Vickery Chapel Road to Millis Road (.52 miles), Ragsdale Road near West Main Street (0.14 miles) Gannaway Street near East Main Street (0.03 miles) and West Main Street from Oakdale Road to Dillon Road (.15 miles). Since the funds are on a reimbursable basis with the County, the Finance Department will present a budget amendment to address these reimbursed funds from Guilford County at the March Town Council Meeting. Guilford County Commissioners planned to seek approval of these contracts at their Feb. 23 Board meeting. No further information was available.

Reasons of such inability to convey include, but are not limited to, the filing of a bankruptcy petition prior to the confirmation of the sale and reinstatement of the loan without the knowledge of the trustee.

If the validity of the sale is challenged by any party, the trustee, in their sole discretion, if they believe the challenge to have merit, may request the court to declare the sale to be void and return the deposit. The purchaser will have no further remedy.

Foods to Stockpile to reduce Grocery Spending

Whenever you read about frugality, you’ll find a lot about what not to buy. Well, I’m going to tell you what you should buy. These are the items to stockpile when they go on sale.

With prices skyrocketing, it’s important to know the prices of items you buy regularly so you know if you’re getting a good deal.

I seriously recommend keeping notes when you

shop to record the prices of any items you purchase regularly.

Here are some of the goodies no pantry should be without:

Peanut butter: This pantry staple keeps a long time and is always handy. Stored in a cool, dry area, it’ll last at least two years.

Salad dressings: Especially Italian, Greek and Balsamic. Besides dressing salads, they make great marinades for meat, poultry and fish. You also use them to dress pasta, potatoes or

steamed vegetables.

Condiments and sauces: Items like soy, teriyaki, barbecue, mustard and ketchup keep for a very long time and help with inspiration when it comes to meal planning.

Spices: Stored properly, avoiding light, heat and moisture, dried spices and herbs last one to two years.

Pasta: Watch for coupons and wait for sales. Properly stored, unopened packages last up to three years, so stock up!

Pasta sauce: The canned stuff still goes on sale for around a dollar. If you’re like me, you usually add stuff to it anyway — a little onion, garlic and sausage. You know. There’s your last-minute meal, ready and waiting.

Canned tomatoes: They come in lots of varieties, and store brands are terrific. Lycopene, the antioxidant found in tomatoes, is in its cell walls. Cooking tomatoes releases lycopene to do its work, so canned is healthier than fresh. They keep for about a year.

Dried and canned beans: Dried are most economical and remain at best quality two years or longer.

Canned are ready immediately for quick meals.

Canned soups: Keep a few cream soups on hand for quick meal fixes and a few main dish soups on hand for emergency meals. Collect coupons for quality brands then wait for sales.

Frozen vegetables: When the price goes under the price per pound of the fresh veggies, it’s time to pick some up. Kept frozen, they remain at peak quality up to 12 months.

Frozen meat and poultry: Again, watch for sales and put a few aside. Chubs and vacuum-packed ground meats freeze beautifully and take up minimum space.

Here’s a quick and easy chili recipe made with pantry ingredients. This makes a base for meals like burritos, tacos or taco salad. Serve over baked potatoes, rice or pasta; make chili mac; or use as filling for omelets; or just eat it with tortilla chips.

Photo courtesy of www.JasonCoblentz.com make this quick and easy chili with pantry ingredients.

10 minute pantry chili yield: 4 servings

total time: 10 minutes

what you’ll need:

1 pound ground beef, pork or turkey

1 1/2 cups onion, chopped

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 tablespoon cumin

1 tablespoon dried minced garlic

1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce

1 (15-ounce) can red kidney beans

salt & pepper to taste

here’s how:

Heat skillet to medium-

high. Place hamburger and onion in the skillet, stirring occasionally. While the hamburger cooks, open the

beans and tomato sauce and rinse the beans. Set aside.

When the meat is nearly done, drain the excess fat from the skillet. Add the chili powder, cumin, garlic, tomato sauce and beans. Stir to combine. Add salt and pepper to taste. If you can budget a few dollars each month for stocking up on sale items, it will save you a bundle in the long run.
