Virtual programs highlight Jamestown By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Want to know more about the history of Jamestown? Two upcoming virtual programs featuring Shawn Rogers, director of Mendenhall Homeplace, can help. “Mendenhall Family and Their Involvement in the N.C. Abolitionist Movement” will be presented by The High Point Preservation Society and High Point Museum on March 17 at 10 a.m. Rogers will lead the discussion. An abolitionist was someone who wanted an end to a practice or institution, in this case, slavery. Guilford County – and its
large anti-slavery Quaker population – played a large part in freeing slaves. Jamestown’s Mendenhall family, and especially Richard Mendenhall, worked to free slaves. Mendenhall was a charter member of the local manumission society and was later state president. His home still stands on West Main Street and is owned and operated by the Historic Jamestown Society. During his research, Rogers uncovered some stories that have never been told about the Mendenhall family, both in North Carolina and in other states. “I discovered a lot of new [information] that changed my thinking,” Rogers said. Rogers will also be the speaker at Preservation
Greensboro’s virtual program spotlighting Jamestown on March 18. The program is part of a yearlong celebration of Guilford County’s 250th anniversary.
Jamestown is older than both Greensboro and High Point. Quakers settled the area in 1752 and established grist and saw mills along the forks of the Deep River. The North Carolina Railroad arrived in 1856. “This will be a general history of early Jamestown, its growth and development,” Rogers said, “and I will be weaving in some architectural information.” The Zoom program will be available at https:// us02web.zoom.us/j/8909 4379708?pwd=YjVhenZ zOElzUi9rY2sxT2hSaDBkdz09 or enter through the Preservation Greensboro website, preservationgreensboro.org/event/ guilford-at-250-the-townof-jamestown. The pass-
code is GSO250. A recent virtual program on the part Guilford County played in the Underground Railroad can be found at www.highpointnc. gov/2350/UndergroundRailroad-History. The Historic Jamestown Society was established in 1974, and interprets local history. It owns and operates Mendenhall Homeplace, a museum of Quaker history of the nineteenth century located at 603 West Main Street in Jamestown. To learn more about the Mendenhall family and Jamestown history, visit the Homeplace on West Main Street or www.mendenhallhomeplace.com. Tours are available.
council to discuss Rotary club joins Senior Resources to help meal recipients park plan In August of last year, the Jamestown Town Council indefinitely tabled the proposed master plan for Jamestown Park and Golf Course. At that time, discussion was underway concerning development of the Johnson property along Guilford College and Mackay roads. Diamondback Investment Group, the developer, offered to construct ball fields on the site as part of its plans for development. With that offer pending, the ball fields were
removed from the Park’s master plan. However, councilmembers were not pleased the fields were removed from Jamestown Park and requested an alternative plan. That plan is expected to be presented and discussed at the 6 p.m. March 16 Town Council meeting. “The option of moving [the fields] to the Johnson property came up after the recreation plan study began,” Johnson told the Council. “Diamondback would build on the town’s specs and then give the fields to the town.” SEE COUNCIL, PAGe 2
Board approves tree removal, relocation By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Jamestown’s Tree Board met via Zoom on March 1 to discuss tree placement at the new Transitional Care facility at Pennybyrn. Article 11.8-4-F of the town’s Land Development Ordinance authorizes the Tree Board to issue waivers to allow a reduction in landscape buffer yards or to waive the buffer requirements to allow for a greater tree conservation area in another area. The purpose of the tree conservation area is to encourage the preservation of healthy trees that are four inches or greater in diameter at breast height.
Due to a right of way setback problem on one of the properties along Penny Road, the new building had to be slightly repositioned on the site, resulting in the removal of more trees on the back portion of the site than was anticipated. Alex Toye, an architect with Action Pact Design Group, LLC, representing Pennybyrn, said removal of approximately five trees and 47 shrubs from the original landscaping plan was needed. Those trees and 25-30 of the shrubs would be relocated to the rear of the completed building. These plants would provide more privacy and tranquility for the therapy SEE TREE, PAGe 2
By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com It is easy to see how Covid-19 has affected businesses, schools, churches and other organizations. But Meals on Wheels, a long-established program that provides food to seniors 60 and older who have no one to prepare them daily lunches, has also felt the impact. Instead of meals delivered to their doors each weekday, clients now receive a box containing five frozen meals and a bag of breakfast items. “We want to keep everybody safe, our clients and our volunteers,” said Mikayla Tate, nutrition services director at Senior Resources of Guilford. “That is why we started delivering only once a week. We want our clients to be fed, and want them to be healthy. The pandemic is also why we began including breakfast items in our deliveries.” Steve Owen, a board member of Seniors Resources of Guilford, shared the need to include breakfast packets to Meals on Wheels clients with the Jamestown Rotary Club, of which he is also a member. The group decided paying for the breakfast items and making food deliveries every other week should be their newest project. “Each year our club receives matching grants from our district depending on donations we have made to Rotary International,” said Geoff Swan, who wrote the grant request. “The amount we get varies from year to year. This year we received a $609 grant. The matching funds our club gave came from proceeds earned at our annual horse show.” Helping eliminate food insecurity is a major concern of Rotary International, so the project the Jamestown club has undertaken fits right into its agenda. “Food insecurity has long been

weekly delivers until our funds run out,” Swan said. “It is possible we may do this again in the future. It is a local project and we can see where our money is going to help others.” Although Meals on Wheels clients have continued to receive the food they need during the pandemic, they are missing the contact from daily visits. Tate emphasized that the clients are not forgotten, however. “We have wellness volunteers who call the clients regularly to see how they are doing,” she said.

continued from front garden. Approximately 17-22 of the original 47 shrubs would be lost. The removal/relocation of the trees and shrubs is necessary in order to continue the decorative fencing along Penny Road that surrounds the majority of the Pennybyrn property. There were no questions from Tree Board members and was unanimously approved. The new building will be an approximately 23,000 sq. ft., 24-bed, single-story, short-term stay facility with parking facing Penny Road. The Pennybyrn at Maryfield continuing care retirement community appears to be located in High Point, just outside the Jamestown limits. But the organization owns several properties along the west side of Penny Road that are actually in Jamestown. It is on five of these properties that the facility is planned. In September 2019, representatives from Pennybyrn addressed the town’s Planning Board to request that property at 111, 113, 115, 121 Penny Road and a portion of parcel No. 176232 be rezoned from Single Family Residential to Conditional ZoningCivic. CZ-CIV zoning permits a “skilled care nursing facility with in-patient
and out-patience therapy services associated with a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) and it’s accessory uses.” Planning Director Matthew Johnson noted that “Pennybyrn is a CCRC retirement community configured as a single unified campus that includes independent living dwellings, assisted living facilities, and skilled nurs-
ing facilities that provides a continuum of care to residents of the community.” Before the short meeting adjourned, Planning Director Matthew Johnson announced there is a second option being prepared for the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The Town Council indefinitely tabled the original plan in August 2020.
What is a Tree Board?
Even though Jamestown has been known as a Tree City USA community for more than 12 years, many people may be surprised to learn that Jamestown has a Tree Board. It was created several years ago and is generally the same as the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. Article 4.4-4 of the Land Development Ordinance states some of the duties of the Tree Board as: • study and develop and/or update annually, specifications for the care, conservation, pruning, planting and replanting of publically owned trees and shrubs in parks, along streets, and in other public areas; • develop and maintain arboricultural specifications for tree care and replacement; • provide guidance for tree and landscaping programs and policy; • evaluate and monitor current regulations for effectiveness and recommend appropriate changes regarding the Tree Preservation Ordinance and the Landscape/Buffering standards; • conduct educational programs with respect to tree preservation; • review and provide recommendations regarding long term tree management and maintenance plans for the Town; • review appeals, orders, requirements, decisions, and/interpretations made by Town staff charged with enforcing the Tree Preservation Ordinance; • make recommendations to the Board of Adjustment with reference to variances relating to provisions of the Tree Preservation Ordinance and the Landscape/Buffering standards; and • approve minor modifications to the Tree Preservation Ordinance and the Landscape/Buffering standards that provide equal or better compliance.

continued from front Any plans for Jamestown Park – excluding the golf course – is contingent on the Town receiving Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant funding. However, PARTF will not fund renovations, which is what it would take to upgrade the existing ball fields. The Council is also expected to appoint Robert Coon as an Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) alter-
nate member of the Planning Board. It will consider approval of a bid for a street resurfacing contract as well as lease agreements with PNC. Due to Covid-19 social gathering restrictions, public access to the March meeting is limited. Anyone wishing to address the Council is asked to line up outside of the Civic Center before 6 p.m. Those in line will be allowed to enter the meeting
one at a time. Anyone who would not feel comfortable being physically present at the meeting is asked to email kweiner@jamestown-nc. gov and the comments will be distributed to Council. The meeting will be streamed live on the Town of Jamestown’s YouTube page. The link is www.youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC. The video will also be available for viewing after the meeting.

Fingerpaint a shamrock shape on bathroom mirrors to surprise the rest of the family when they wake up. * Set out large sheets of white paper for your kids and let them print St. Patrick’s Day shamrock designs for festive placemats using a green pepper for a stamp! Stamp on paper napkins, too. In preparation for the craft, choose a firm green pepper at the market that has similar contours as the shape of a shamrock. An adult should slice it in half crosswise, remove the seeds and pat dry. Dip the cut end of the pepper in green poster or acrylic paint, then press the pepper firmly on the paper to make shamrock-like prints from the natural stamp.

Paint stems freehand on the shamrock to complete the design. (If there is a long stem on the pepper, it makes a nice handle for a young child to hold while stamping.) Save and slice the remaining half of the green pepper into several shamrock-shaped slices to add to a salad. * At dinnertime, listen to traditional Irish music. Talk about names and surnames that are typically Irish, such as Sean, Megan, Shannon and O’Brien. Ask your kids if any of their friends have Irish names. Share stories about any Irish ancestors in your family tree. * For dessert, set small paper shamrock cutouts on
serving plates. Sift cocoa over each entire plate and remove cutouts to reveal shamrock shapes. Serve a scoop of mint-chocolatechip ice cream in the center. * Visit your neighborhood public library with your preschoolers before St. Patrick’s Day and ask for books of tales from or about Ireland. At bedtime, nothing will delight your “wee ones” more than imagining a world of little people smaller than they are! Find more recipes and family fun at www.donnaerickson. com. My first love is culinary history. Researching, reading and writing about the history of food and recipes is what fuels my passion to share what I’ve learned in my cookbooks and the articles that I write for newspapers, blogs and magazines. When I was asked to write a column about St. Patrick’s Day, I discovered the fascinating history of Irish potatoes. The people of Ireland embraced the potato around 1780. The crop rapidly became the primary source of food for most of the population. Potatoes are nourishing and filling, and contain most of the vitamins needed in our daily diet. The crop also is a popular food source around the world because it only requires an acre of land and will grow under almost any conditions. An Irish potato is covered with an offwhite or cream-colored skin. The flesh is creamy white. Black flecks or marks often mottle the flesh of the potato, but have no impact on the flavor. An Irish potato is waxy, which makes it hold its shape when boiled, a common cooking technique in Ireland. The potatoes also are delicious when fried, roasted or broiled. However, the potato’s waxy texture makes it gluey and dense when mashed, so select another variety like a Russet or Yukon gold for this purpose. In the mid-1800s, a disease caused by a fungus infested potato crops throughout Europe, causing a devastating famine in Ireland. This time period is called the Great Famine or Gorta Mor, meaning “the great hunger.” Mass emigration coupled with widespread deaths from starvation caused the Irish population to drop by 20% to 25%. Many Irish families immigrated to America to escape the hardships in Ireland and to start a new life. By 1850, the Irish made up a quarter of the population in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore. After years of suffering in Ireland, in 1883, the French botanist Alexandre Millardet discovered an effective fungicide to combat the potato blight. Today, potatoes are the world’s fourth largest food crop, following rice, wheat and maize. Here’s a link to a fascinating animated history about the Irish potato: https://ed.ted.com/ lessons/history-through-the-eyes-of-thepotato. My recipe for Irish Sheet Pan Potatoes, Sausage and Cabbage Bake is an easy way to incorporate the flavor components of a traditional, long-simmering Irish stew in half the time. It also provides the perfect showcase for Irish potatoes while creating a warm and comforting family meal for a St. Patrick’s Day or any day of the week.
IRISH SHEET PAN POTATOES, SAUSAGE AND CABBAGE BAKE 3 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil, divided 2 pounds Irish potatoes, quartered 1/2 head green cabbage, sliced into chunks 1 bulb fennel or 3 stalks celery, thinly sliced 1 yellow onion, peeled and roughly chopped 6 cloves garlic, peeled and diced 1 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 6 links (about 3-ounces each) Irish banger sausage links, Kielbasa or Bratwurst links
1. Preheat the oven to 400 F. 2. Lightly coat a rimmed, 9-by-13 or 18-by-13 baking sheet with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, or spray until lightly coated with cooking oil spray. 3. Place the Irish potatoes, cabbage, fennel or celery, onion and garlic on the sheet pan. Drizzle the olive oil over the vegetable mixture. Sprinkle the poultry seasoning, salt, pepper and allspice over the mixture. Combine the mixture with the seasonings with your clean hands or a spoon or spatula. 4. Spread the mixture evenly around the baking sheet and press the ingredients into the bottom of the pan so that everything cooks uniformly. Place the sausages evenly on top of the vegetable mixture. 5. Cook for 20 minutes, stir, press the vegetable mixture into the bottom of the pan so that it is evenly distributed, and turn the sausages over to cook on the other side. Then cook for an additional 20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Serve with thick slices of hot crusty bread and butter. Serves 6.
