If that headline has a familiar ring, this is not the first time a driver in Jamestown has not cleared the railroad tracks before being hit by a train. On Feb. 21, just after 5 p.m., Frederick Paul Carr, 23, of Baton Rouge, La., turned right out of the driveway from Hood Container and Teknor Apex onto Dillon Road and drove across the railroad tracks toward West Main Street. He did not make it across before the crossing arms came down, one hitting the back end of his empty trailer. With no where to go due to traffic already waiting at the light, Carr blew his horn to clear a path, but an Amtrak passenger train in route to Charlotte was faster, hitting the trailer and slicing it in half. The train stopped about a quarter-mile west of the collision.

The cab and front part of the trailer ended up on the railroad tracks at dillon Road while the back part of the tractor trailer flew south. Debris from the truck. slid approximately 200 feet south on Dillon Road and hit a black van driven by Erica Holzman. Her 7-year-old son was a passenger in the van. “I didn’t have time to think,” Holzman said in an interview with the Jamestown News. “I thought, ‘Oh, no. I have to save my boy. I screamed for him to duck.’”
Holzman said the warning lights were flashing but the gates had not come down when Carr pulled out in front of her van, which was stopped at the pavement marking south of the tracks. Carr proceeded toward Main Street. A video provided by Amtrak showed the truck failed to stop at the flashing lights. “I don’t believe I’m going to see that

Social media has been abuzz. Renovation of the space began in November but, like everything else affected by Covid, work has been slow. “You name it, everything is taking more time,” said Keith Henning, one of the owners of the new business. As expected, it will be a restaurant, but The Miller’s Market is not just a sit-down place to eat. In fact, that is not the main attraction of the business. With a motto of “Eat, Drink, Shop,” the eatery will feature fresh local foods for dine-in or grab-andgo take-out. “We thought that [concept] might be good because we’re limited in space, limited in what we can do, so we turned it into more of a market with a coffee shop and a small menu,” Henning said. “People can just come here on the weekend, grab
I’m going to see,” Holzman said when she realized what was happening. “I don’t ever want to go through or see that again in my life.” Carr jumped from the truck’s cab before the crash. Neither Holzman nor her son were injured. “He was shaken up, but he never cried,” she said. “He said, ‘Mom, I’ve never seen anything like that in my life!’ ‘I haven’t either, I said.’ He’ll have a big story to tell in school.” She spoke with Carr just after the accident happened and he apologized for it. He was charged with failure to yield at a crossing. The damage to the van appeared to be minimal – just a broken headlight – but Holzman now says there might be damage to the undercarriage and front bumper. “We’re very fortunate it didn’t go see COLLIsIOn, PAGe 2

The menu includes chicken salad, pasta, quinoa bowls and more, which patrons can grab-and-go for lunch or
dinner. Craft beer is also available. Mike Swanson is the new manager, but he is also a chef and his specialty is bread. He will create freshly-baked bread and create pastries and desserts daily. The American Heart Association is working with UnitedHealthcare and Bank of America to improve heart health among the Triad’s most at-risk populations. Part of these health initiatives include a call for minigrant applications from organizations or community partners working to improve health in Guilford and Forsyth counties. Community partners are encouraged to apply for mini-grants ranging from $2,500 - $10,000 to support heart healthy policies and environments with a specific focus on health equity and nutrition security. Cardiovascular diseases are the world’s leading causes of death, impacting people of all races, ethnicities, genders, religions, ages, sexual orientations, and abilities. Health equity is a state that would exist if everyone had a just opportunity to be healthy, with no one disadvantaged from achieving their potential because of race, social position, or any other socially defined circumstance. The American Heart Association is working to identify and remove barriers to health, including social determinants of health. One in 10 people in America are not getting enough food or nutrients they need. There are 47 food
deserts in the Triad, with over 150,000 individuals living with food insecurity every day. COVID-19 has amplified this need by making it harder for many to afford or access healthy foods.Some people living in disproportionately affected communities may live in areas without convenient access to a grocery store or have to take multiple buses to go to the nearest grocery store. This makes eating healthy extremely inconvenient, if not impossible. Community members, including individuals, churches, senior centers, community health centers, housing authorities, historically black colleges and universities, community colleges, city and county governments, hospitals, employers, and others are welcome to apply for minigrants focused on community health needs. Organizations or community groups that submitted mini-grant applications in the past but were unfunded, are welcome to reapply. Past community health mini-grant awardees are also invited to submit applications focused on a different program. To apply and for more information, interested partners should complete the application. The community health mini-grant application deadline is March 31, 2022.
honoring others can be a beautiful thing For several years, black steel benches have been popping up around Jamestown, providing walkers in the community, or those who just want to rest and watch the world go by, an opportunity to relax along the way. The benches, which began as part of a downtown beautification plan, are donated by individuals or groups in honor or memory of friends and loved ones. Each bench bears a commemorative plaque
naming the person honored. “The sponsorship efforts began in earnest around 2011 when the Town began working on plans for Wrenn Miller Park,” said Town Manager Matthew Johnson. “The Town pays for roughly half or a little more of the actual cost and we also contribute the manpower to assemble and set the sponsored items in place.” As funds are available for matching, the Town Council accepts all such gifts donated in the order they are received. In the event a donor wishes to assume all of the cost, the Town will accept the full donation.
“We try to work very closely with the sponsor to find a suitable location for each item,” Johnson added. When Sheryl Miller decided to place a bench in downtown Jamestown in memory of her husband Kenneth, she opted to have it as close to Potent Potables as possible. The location available was in front of the Blue House Bakery, which is beside that business. “Ken loved downtown Jamestown and was a frequent customer at PoPos, Southern Roots and The Deck,” she said. “The bench was a surprise for our daughters, Sarah, 24, and
Audrey, 20. Ken’s brother, Tom Miller, came down from Richmond and met us in front of the bakery to unveil the bench to the girls.” The Jamestown Civitans have placed two benches at the entrance sign between Yorkleigh Lane and Vickrey Chapel Road in memory of former club members Terry Wyrick and Frank Weaver. “We are a very active group and they were key members,” said club president Keith Volz. None of the 57 passengers on the train were injured but Carr sustained minor injuries when he apparently hit his head jumping out of the truck before the crash. He was not transported to the hospital. The maximum speed of trains between Greensboro and Charlotte is 79 mph. Not the first accident The February accident was not the first at the railroad crossing at Dillon Road near West Main Street. In August 2012, an Amtrak train traveling from Charlotte to Raleigh hit a tractor-trailer carrying 40,000 pounds of agricultural lime at the same intersection around 1:28 p.m. The trailer was sliced in half and white lime powder, which had been in 50-pound bags, scattered for over 100 yards east of the road. The powder covered a portion of the trailer, as well as the engine that was pulling five cars. The train did not derail but the back half of the trailer was across the tracks from the front half and cab. Three passengers from the train, including the engineer, were transported to area hospitals. None appeared to have life-threatening injuries. Witnesses said the flashing signals came on at the crossing and

The truck stopped on the tracks behind traffic already waiting for the light to change and was between the crossing gates. Officials believe the crossing signals were functioning normally. that stretch of Dillon Road are operated by the City of High Point for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The Town of Jamestown refers issues about the signals to High Point. The maximum speed of trains between Greensboro and Charlotte is 79 mph. North Carolina General Statute 20-142.5 prohibits motorists from driving onto any highway-rail unless there is adequate space on the other side of the crossing to accommodate their vehicle without obstructing the passage of other vehicles, pedestrians or trains, even if there is a traffic signal indicating it is safe to proceed. One block east in March 2007 an Amtrak train hit a car at the Oakdale Road crossing. The driver of the car drove around the crossing gates then realized she couldn’t get across. When she backed up, she put her car into the path of an oncoming train. The train hit the back right quarter panel of the car, spinning it around. The driver was not injured.
