Horton decision again continued Town awaits developer responses

As expected, the Jamestown Town Council again continued the public hearings regarding annexation and rezoning from D.R. Horton for the former Johnson property at the corner of Guilford College and Mackay roads. The public hearing on the related development agreement was also continued. All hearings are now scheduled for April 19. Mayor Lynn Montgomery read the following statement from the Council regarding the continuations:

“Our Council noted from the beginning of this process that the development of these tracts will impact the character and function of our historic town forever. “We decided that development would proceed in two ways. First, with meaningful input from our town’s citizen’s under the guidance of one of the country’s leading urban planners. This was accomplished last fall. Second we decided that this project would be guided by a tightly written, highly specific and well-prepared development agreement that went far beyond the details and regulations in our zoning ordinance. Our town staff and legal counsel

prepared an extensive document that touches on everything from street standards, sidewalk design, signage, architectural specifications, utility requirements, and fire and public protection, to name a few. “These documents are not drafted overnight, but through discussion and negotiation. “Our staff and legal counsel have done their part and met the agreed-upon schedule. We continue to wait for timely responses from the developer. When we do, we will have a document for you Photo courtesy Town of Jamestown to review. Our attorneys advise us Mayor Lynn Montgomery, right, and the Town Council honored Nancy Avery who has been acting as interim town clerk while see horton, page 2 Katie Weiner was on maternity leave.

Drawers of HOPE provides positive outlook

Honoring Vietnam veterans Veteran’s Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald has defined March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day. To honor those who served on active duty at any time during military operations by the United States in Vietnam, a flag raising will be held on that day at 11 a.m. at Wrenn Miller Park. The community is invited to attend. Mayor Lynn Montgomery also will read a proclamation to honor those who served from North Carolina.

By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com The drawers of life are often filled with negativity — fear, doubt, depression, hunger, feelings of unworthiness, etc. But when the drawers are open, hope can creep in and take over. Pool to remain closed another year By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com For the third year in a row, the pool at the High Point City Lake Park will remain closed. City officials have said renovations to the pool and gymnasium will not be finished until too late in the summer to make opening worthwhile. The delay is caused by construction and supply chain problems. The pool closed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Planned renovations began in 2021, forcing closing that year. The original goal was to open by Memorial Day this summer. “The age of the pool and deferred maintenance necessitated the renovations,” Lee Tillery, High Point Parks and Recreation director, said in 2021. “The pool liner and maintenance system are old.” The biggest change to the pool will be at the southern end near West Main Street. Samet Construction Co. removed that section of the pool and made it ground

level, creating a “zero-barrier entrance lifestyle pool” which will include a lazy river. The original stone shower will remain. The gymnasium building also is undergoing major renovation as the gym goes away, transforming the building into a community center with assembly room and offices. “There will be two multi-purpose big rooms and additional restrooms,” Tillery said. Locker rooms will be remodeled and entrances to the locker rooms and new community center will have a major facelift. The City of High Point approved a $9.5 million bond referendum for the renovations in November 2019. Other park amenities, like shelters, fishing, marina and playground with rides remain open. The City Lake Park Renovation project plan can be found at www. highpointnc.gov.2483/High-PointCity-Lake-Park-Construction but note that the completion date has not been updated.

Board approves LDO amendment It took the Jamestown Planning Board less than 15 minutes to go through the agenda for its March 14 meeting. There was only one piece of new business to cover. Following a public hearing, the Board unanimously approved an amendment to the Land Development Ordinance. The amendment clarifies the definition of planning director in Article III Definitions by noting the town manager or designee may act in the place of planning director. The amendment went before the Town Council the following evening and the Council scheduled a public hearing on the matter at its April 19 meeting.

Fraud workshop scheduled By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com What would you do if you learned you were a victim of fraud? What if it happened to a senior citizen? AARP might have a solution. Jamestown’s AARP Livable Communities Committee and the Town of Jamestown will host three AARP workshops in the coming weeks. “Fraud Watch Network” will be presented March 31. During this program, participants will learn how to protect themselves from scammers and learn how to identify, avoid and report fraud. The latest data on fraud trends will also be covered. Learn how to spot and avoid the newest scams (and their variations) that con artists are using. Staying current about the red flags of today’s scams can help you and your loved ones avoid engaging with them to begin with. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently reported that consumer fraud losses hit a record $5.8 billion in 2021. The amount

of money lost to scams increases as victims age, with those 80 and over the biggest targets, almost twice as many as the next highest age group. “Living Longer, Living Smarter” will be presented April 28. Learn how to create a long-term plan with financial, health, home/community and legal considerations in mind. “Home Fit” is the final workshop on May 25. At this presentation, learn solutions for making your home comfortable, safe and a good fit. This program helps people stay in their own home. “These are fabulous workshops,” said Councilmember Rebecca Rayborn, who is leading the AARP Livable Communities Committee. “These are based on programs AARP is already doing.” She noted Town Planner Anna Hawryluk has worked with Bob Gerken, a local N.C. AARP Triad Region Leadership Team representative, to arrange these meetings. In Jamestown, 29.5 percent of

the residents are age 60 or older. That number is expected to rise by 2035, when the number of adults older than 65 will be greater than the number of children under 18. These days, one quarter of all Americans age 65 or older live in small towns like Jamestown and rural communities. But being an AARP Livable Community does not apply just to those people. It’s a method of making towns attractive to anyone wanting to move there, whether as a couple, alone or as part of an extended family. Seniors are urged to attend these workshops but anyone may attend. All workshops are free and will be held from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon via Zoom and streamed on the Town’s YouTube channel. The workshops will also be shown in the Civic Center at Town Hall. Registration is required but AARP membership is not required. continued from front is currently working toward a master’s degree in education. But she understands atrisk children in a way some may not. Graham grew up in a single parent home, lived in public housing and had the experience of going to an alternative school to learn to manage her anger in a positive way. In September 2021, Graham received the Pillar of Fame award from the Housing Authority of the City of High Point. It honors those who have been successful in spite of adversity. “I want to show children that they, too, can make it — that where you come from

does not define who you are,” she said. Graham noted she has always had a desire to help people. One reason for establishing Drawers of HOPE was to keep children off the streets and out of gangs. “I kept seeing death rates from gang-related activities and knew I had to do something,” she said. “Children need a safe place to go. I thank God that He has given me the gift to help.” The programs at Drawers of HOPE are offered to any child. They are free and funded by donations. As a 501(c)(3), donations to the organization are tax

deductible. Because it is a 100 percent volunteer-based organization, all donations go directly to meet the needs of the community. Graham would like to find a larger facility in the same area so she can help more children. She also is looking for a grant writer who can help find funding for the programs. Most of all, the organization needs children and parents/guardians to be aware of what is available to them. All that is required is a simple application to attend. To learn more about Drawers of HOPE see www. DrawersofHopeRC.org or call 336-875-4348.

Once we have meaningful responses from the developer, we will move to the next stage. “We appreciate your patience with this process.” In other business: • Since former Assistant Town Manager Matthew Johnson was hired as Town Manager, Town Clerk Katie Weiner has been appointed assistant town manager, effective immediately. In a statement, Johnson said, “Katie will assist in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Town and will assist in directing the Town’s staff in the implementation of the Town Council’s Strategic Plan. Additionally, she will be working directly with the town council and town manager to develop and implement strategies that will propel Jamestown into the future.” Weiner was hired in 2017 and has a bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s degree in public administration. She will continue to serve as town clerk. • The Council voted three to one to approve new golf course rates at Jamestown Park, effective March 28. Councilmember Lawrence Straughn cast the nay vote.

jury that he was faking mental illness. They thought he was using the skills and knowledge of a sane physician to try to act mentally disturbed and avoid responsibility for a brutal murder. From his study of Vince’s situation, Benjamin believed that Vince had multiple conditions that could have caused his mental illness. Most important to him was a finding that Vince suffered from Huntington’s Disease, an inherited condition that ravages its victims and causes bizarre conduct. If Vince’s condition had been known at the time of his trial, Benjamin believed that he would have, at worst, been found not guilty by reason of insanity. Rather than petition for a new trial which would have taken years, Benjamin and his advisors and volunteer professionals asked Virginia governors for clemency. First, they petitioned Governor Terry McAuliffe, hoping he would act before he left office in January 2018. He did not. So Benjamin’s volunteer legal helpers pointed to McAuliffe’s successor, Ralph Northam, a physician and

a neurologist. They thought he would be understanding. The book ends on a sad note. As his term ended in January 2022, Northam rejected the clemency petition for Vince. At the end of his book, Benjamin writes, “It is difficult not to react to this latest setback with anger and disillusionment... I am filled with fury and sadness--for Vince, his family, for all the mentally ill people in prison just like him.” A sad ending for this book. But there is more to the story. Somehow, Governor Northam got and read a pre-publication copy of “The Other Dr. Gilmer” and was convinced to grant Vince clemency, just in time. Others who read this fine book will, like Northam, be transformed.

behind the commercial real estate company WeWork, you’re in for a treat with this new miniseries. Based on a podcast of the same name, WeCrashed tells the story of how Adam Neumann, his wife, Rebekah, and Miguel McKelvey team up to create a first-of-its-kind office experience called WeWork. The startup’s main goal is to sell workspaces to other companies, but WeWork’s success skyrockets it in a way no one could have predicted, as do its founders, their greed and their consequences. Academy Award winners Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway star as the eerily obsessive couple, with America Ferrera and Kyle Marvin making up the rest of the main cast. Scout out freezer aisle to save time, money By pAtti diAMond DiVaS ON a DiMe Life moves fast, and frozen foods have become indispensable for preparing healthy, quick and easy meals. It’s possible to equate “quick and easy” with “bad for you” in the freezer aisle because there are many unhealthy options there. But as with all foods, use your common sense and read the nutrition labels, and you’ll find healthy, nutritious food. To be clear: I’m advocating for buying frozen ingredients to make meals rather than processed, ready-to-heat-and-eat meals in boxes. But I don’t judge, I always have a frozen lasagna stashed in case of emergency. Freezing vegetables, fruits, grains, lean meats and seafood preserves their peak nutrition for a long time. According to the Food and Drug Administration, frozen foods are safe to eat indefinitely. The taste may diminish, but the food will remain safe to eat if it stays frozen. The best thing about frozen food is it saves you money and time. Many items are simply cheaper to buy frozen than fresh. Compared with their fresh counterparts, they’re picked and pro-

cessed at the height of ripeness, then frozen at their peak, sealing in nutrients and flavor. The shelf life is longer, and availability is year-round. Plus, you must factor in your time. Many items are prewashed, pre-cut and ready to cook. Here are the best bargains in the frozen-food section: Fruits — Peak season for most fruit is fleeting. They’re fragile in transport, then go bad quickly when you get them home. You can skip all that with frozen fruit, which can be used in smoothies, cobblers, muffins and more. Peaches stay summertime fresh, cherries and berries are available year-round, and mangos are cut and ready to eat.

frequently cost less than fresh. Plus, they’re washed and pre-cut. Difficult to prepare veggies — like butternut squash, artichoke hearts or riced cauliflower — are a breeze when pre-cut. Frozen can be healthier, too. For instance, fresh corn is often genetically modified, while many frozen varieties are non-GMO certified. But skip the veggies with sauce or cheese, as they’re highly processed and loaded with calories.

seafood — We’re supposed to eat more fish, but fresh fish is expensive. Fish that’s flash frozen immediately after it’s caught is economical. It can actually taste fresher than fish at the seafood counter (which likely was preJuice concentrates — Look viously frozen anyway). Frozen at your carton of orange juice or shrimp is a bargain, as are mussels lemonade; it probably says “from and scallops. concentrate.” Just buy that concentrate frozen for a fraction of Vegetables — Comparing the cost, mix it with water and you price per pound, frozen veggies have the same thing, just cheaper!

puff pastry — Here’s the secret to a frugal and fabulous gourmet dessert anytime. Puff pastry takes expertise and hours to make, but the frozen stuff bakes up beautifully and makes you look like a rock star. Use it to make flaky tarts, turnovers or fancy desserts. Puff pastry also is great for savory dishes like hors d’oeuvres, cheese puffs or topping a chicken pot pie. potato products — The king of side dishes, frozen potatoes are a versatile, quick and easy way to add a wholesome foundation to so many meals. While fresh potatoes are even less expensive than frozen, turning them into dishes like hash browns and French fries

is time-consuming. Fries make a sandwich into a meal, and hash browns make breakfast a special occasion. Why make tater tots from scratch when they’re so inexpensive to buy?

So, let’s chill out while we enjoy the convenience and savings of frozen food.

april Fools’ Day Fun By donnA eRiCkSon DONNa'S DaY: creatiVe faMilY fUN Have you ever had a crazy, mixed-up day where life feels upside down, backward and inside out? With April Fools’ Day around the corner, start planning some capers and silly surprises to create such an off-kilter day for your family. You’ll be making memories the kids will never forget. Here are some ideas to get the wacky side of your brain stimulated for April 1st: — Come to the breakfast table wearing clothes inside out and backward. — Say common phrases backward, such as “Fools April Happy.” — Make school sandwiches inside out, with bread on the inside and cold cuts and mustard on the outside. — Write a lunchbox note with letters reversed in each word. — Walk to the bus stop backward, or if you carpool, sing a round, such as “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” backward. — Serve dinner with dessert first and make it an ice-cream sundae. Upside down of course. Here’s how: Set a maraschino cherry, which would normally be at the top of the sundae, at the bottom of a parfait glass. Wedge a round cookie to fit snuggly near the bottom just above the cherry. Carefully break off the outer edge to fit if necessary. Add big dollops of whipped cream on the cookie. Finally, add ice-cream scoops. Set spoon upside down in the ice cream and

serve the upside-down sundae. — At bedtime, read a backward fairy tale to your kids. Have you ever cheated and read the last page of a book first, just to see how it all comes out? Maybe that is why “The End” by David LaRochelle is so delightful, because he does it for you — no guilt. The book starts at the end of the story and cleverly explains why the book ends — or begins — the way it does. Confused? Your child will find it great fun, but please don’t read the last page first. Start from the beginning, which is the end — I think.
