Women’s clubs learn plight of refugees It was business as usual for members of the Sedgefield Woman’s Club at the start of their Feb. 26 meeting. But the program for the morning was so special that members of the Greensboro Woman’s Club and Woman’s Club of Southwest Guilford were invited to attend. “Several women in our club have interacted with women in their clubs by working together at the district level and by sharing ideas about fundraising,” said Cindy Baggett, SWC president. “We thought this program was going to be valuable to our community and we wanted to share that with sister clubs.” “Our clubs are all about women’s issues, locally,

nationally and globally, said Joan Aydelette, chair of the SWC arts and culture committee. “Our committee decided to take a cultural aspect for this program and address the issue of Afghan refugees and how we can help them assimilate to the United States and also keep their own culture.” One of the SWC members is a friend of Susan Sassman, who is participating in two refugee sponsorships. “I am a community activist,” Sassman said. “My family moved to the United States from Canada when I was 11 and I have lived in Greensboro since the ’70s. Greensboro is a Sanctuary City and I wanted to personally help the refugees who are coming here.” Sassman assisted in getting guest speakers for the

program. They included Zuhal Atmar, an Afghan refugee; Tamana Jamalzai, refugee; Vicki Dithane, community sponsorship developer with North Carolina African Services Coalition; and Lynn Thompson, community engagement director with New Arrivals Institute. Atmar was one of the many refugees forced to leave Afghanistan during its rapid takeover by the Taliban in August 2021. Before leaving, she was an established entrepreneur who founded a recycling company that turned waste paper products into toilet paper. She has received awards for her business endeavors. “It was not easy to leave,” Atmar said. “There was not a lot of time to get out. The first priority was men who had worked with the

military. Many others from different parts of Afghanistan wanted to leave due to fear. We rushed to the gate at the airport to try to get a flight. Many died or were turned back. “Most refugees do not know the (English) lan-

guage and it is hard to adjust. There is a lot to learn in a new country.” After living in a refugee camp for several months, Atmar learned she would be coming to North Carosee ReFUgees, PAGe 2

Lord Cornwallis camped here By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com On March 13, 1781, George and Judith Mendenhall opened their front door along Deep River to find that Lord Charles Cornwallis, commander of the British Forces in the Revolutionary War, was nearby. Cornwallis and his troops were on their way to Guilford Courthouse about 11 miles away and were tired and hungry. With their supply depot all the way in Wilmington, they were pillaging the country and taking what they wanted, wherever they wanted. After setting up camp at Deep River Friends Meeting, at what is now the Penny Road/Wendover Avenue/Hwy. 68 area, several British soldiers were dispatched to Mendenhall’s Mill, about two miles away to secure grain and other supplies. The dispatch read, “A party of one officer and fifty privates from the Brigade of the Guards to parade immediately and march to Mendenhall’s Mill. A guard will attend from headquarters.” The mill was built in the 1750s by James Mendenhall and was then run by his son, George. The site is covered today by the High Point City Lake but at the time, Deep River ran along the property. (Ruins of the mill can be seen near the bridge over the lake on Penny Road when the water level is down.) Earlier in the day, Cornwallis’ soldiers had crossed Deep River near the present bridge on W. Main Street in Jamestown. A plaque was erected in 1934 at the spot in High Point City Lake Park. On March 14, the troops left the mill and plundered the grain and food — and possibly the family’s last milk cow. Several tales exist that say Judith Mendenhall demanded that the cow be saved, and it was.

By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Jamestown does not have its own police force, but relies on the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement. Division 3 has an office in Jamestown. Capt. Yousef Sansour presented an annual report of crime statistics in Jamestown for 2021 at the February Town Council meeting, stating, “The good thing about Jamestown — it’s quiet.” District 3 handled 221 total offenses in 2021, ranging from 23 thefts of property and vehicle parts or accessories to one each

This marker was placed near the West Main street bridge in 1934 by the alexander Martin Chapter, daughters of the american Revolution, marking the spot Cornwallis forded deep River. It is doubtful, however, that Cornwallis himself, nor all 2,400 British soldiers noted, forded the river here but some of his troops probably did.

George C. Mendenhall, son of George and Judith, wrote of his brother Nathan’s remembrance of the time: “He distinctly remembered seeing, when some 5 years old, Lord Cornwallis with his staff of officers, encamped on Deep River on the hill within site of his father’s mill and dwelling house …” The next day, March 15, Cornwallis and his troops marched to New Garden Friends Meeting, now Guilford College, and battled the Continental Army. Later that day, there was another encounter at nearby Guilford Courthouse. There, after a battle of about two hours, the British defeated the Continental Army, commanded by General Nathanael Greene.

Although they won the battle, 93 British soldiers were killed, 413 were wounded, and 26 were missing, totals representing about 25 percent of the British force. The Continental army lost about 6 percent. The forces were so depleted that seven see CORnWaLLIs, PAGe 2

By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com March 15 will mark the fifth time the Jamestown Council is scheduled to hold several public hearings. All have been continued until the following meetings. The three public hearings relate to the property owned by D.R. Horton along Guilford College and Mackay roads. The delay has been caused by continued work on a development agreement for the property. D.R. Horton requested the agreement and is working with the town staff, town attorney and Tom Terrell, land use attorney, on the plan. An incomplete draft was available in the January Council packet. The three continued public hearings were for a request for annexation, one for rezoning and the development agreement. The annexation public hearing began Nov. 21 of last year and has been continued each month since without resolution. It is not known at this time if these meetings will be continued or the issues resolved. Under new business, the Council is expected to make appointments to the Bicycle-Pedestrian Plan Committee. The Town currently is working on a bicycle-pedestrian plan. Ross Sanderlin, director of golf, will present a proposal for a rate change at Jamestown Park and Golf Course. The Council will meet March. 15 at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center at Town Hall. The meeting may also be viewed live at www.youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC.

Jamestown is well-protected by Sheriff of 19 offenses of various description, including trespassing, nonphysical assault, computer hacking fraud, threat to a school, counterfeiting, motorcycle theft, embezzlement, rape, robbery and runaway. There were only four burglaries, compared to 17 the previous year. There were no robberies, but 11 cases of theft of motor vehicle parts or accessories, compared to eight the previous year. Perhaps oddly, there were seven dead body investigations. There were also six simple physical assaults as well as six shoplifting incidents and six driving while impaired offenses.

Jamestown District officers investigated only four motor vehicle thefts and three weapons offenses. Some of the above offenses are Part One crimes, including murder and non-negligent homicide,

rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny/theft and arson. The top 10 calls of service were 410 traffic stops, 298 unknown 911 cellular calls, 208 burglar alarms, 80 suspicious activity, 79 suspicious vehicle, 63 disorderly subject or crowd, 62 law enforcement assistance needed, 54 suspicious subject, 52 check of premises and 46 welfare or assist family checks. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday were the busiest days of the week for District 3, with Sunday be the least busy. A total of more than 400 calls were handled in 2021 during these days. The busi-

refugees continued from front lina, a fact that frightened her to tears. She had never heard of this state and did not want to come here. She was welcomed at the airport with a kiss by Dithane and was impressed at how welcoming the people in this area were. “I soon decided I wanted to stay in Greensboro,” Zuhal said with a smile. “I want to be like everyone else – have a life, not have to move. I still worry I will have to leave my home. “My first impression of the United States is peace. I have never felt peace in my life. Peace cannot be found everywhere. I want to be part of that.” Just as Atmar did not know what to expect from people in the U.S. she says the people of Afghanistan are not as they are portrayed on the news. “Tell your children our people are a beautiful people with a beautiful mindset. They, also, are very welcoming,” she said. Dithane, who has helped Atmar become established in the community, has helped organize sponsor teams for 50 families, but acknowledges there are still refugees waiting for sponsors and housing. “Refugees who have sponsors do so much better,” Dithane said. “People who come to the United States are very motivated, but they need someone they can reach out to who will be a friend.” Lynn Thompson works with New Arrivals Institute, which began 24 years ago as Lutheran Family Services. The organization realized that refugee mothers were not coming to meetings to learn English and about the American culture because they had no one to look after their children. “They asked GTCC if they would teach English while the church provid-

ed childcare,” Thompson said. “In 2010, the New Arrival Institute formed to take the place of Lutheran Family Services. I say it is a 24-year-old program and a 12-year-old non-profit. Today we conduct classes at Peace United Church of Christ. We also partner with many other nonprofits.” The program presented for the local Woman’s clubs had a big impact with their members. One group has already decided to sponsor a family. Emails about employment opportunities have been shared and talks of a job fair have been discussed. The SWC club held a special meeting this week to discuss ways its members can get involved and the next steps to take in helping the refugees. “We have been motivat-

Additional support includes ESL tutoring, job leads and mental health counseling, as well as rides to mosque, stores, doctors and social outings. Providing aid to refugees

Guilford County is home to North Carolina’s largest and most diverse refugee population. According to the Center for New North Carolinians, Guilford County becomes home to an average of nearly 700 new refugees each year. These people come from a variety of countries and ethnic backgrounds. • North Carolina African Services Coalition (NCASC) is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to empowering refugees and immigrants of the Triad through direct social services and employment programs. It serves as a one-stop information source for refugees and immigrant communities to help them become selfsufficient and independent. Originally founded in 1990 as a community support organization for Greensboro’s African community, NCASC has since become a full-fledged refugee resettlement agency. The 501(c)(3) non-profit organization provides services to refugees, those seeking asylum, and human trafficking victims who settle in Greensboro. It helps find housing, offers services that lead to employment and provides information on resettlement and the working of American life. • The New Arrivals Institute was established in 2010 to replace Lutheran Family Services. The plan was to establish a non-profit that would have the flexibility to not only apply for grants but be able to quickly develop and implement programs to meet the needs of refugees and immigrants. New Arrivals Institute is not only a resource for and educational service provider to refugees and immigrants, but also serves as a resource to the community at large about refugees and immigrants and their issues. NAI sponsors English classes at four levels, which are provided by instructors from Guilford Technical Community College on Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 12:30 year round at Peace United Church of Christ in Greensboro. The group provides free childcare during the lessons.

months later, Cornwallis and the British surrendered at Yorktown, Va., ending the Revolutionary War. It might be noted that Gen. Greene had planned to attack Lord Cornwallis at the camp on Deep River. Green’s own writings say so, according to remarks made several years ago by Tom Baker, then staff historian at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. Cornwallis moved on to the Courthouse before Greene had a chance to attack. While researching this article, several interesting stories were found. Whether these are substantiated, or just folk tales, they make for interesting companion pieces to the story of Cornwallis in Jamestown. One article tells of “A large tree which stood in Jamestown for many years was called the Cornwallis tree because legend has it that it grew from a switch carried by Cornwallis to use in switching his horse. A re-enactment of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse is held each March. The previous two events were canceled due to Covid, but it returns this year March 12-13 at Country Park, 3905 Nathanael Green Dr. in Greensboro. Reenactor camps will be open to the public from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday. The battle re-enactment will take place at 2 p.m. both days. Re-enactors dressed in period uniforms and carrying weapons stage the battle. Other reenactors set up military encampments, hold firearms demonstra-

While standing talking to some men he absent-mindedly stuck the switch in the ground and it grew into a large shade tree.” Another states that “A physician from Lord Cornwallis’ camp ministered to a sick child of the Mendenhalls and a beautiful holly tree was planted in a (unreadable) of cedars which marked Cornwallis’ camp to commemorate the occasion.” Still another report has two of Greene’s Continental soldiers climbing trees in front of a Methodist church located on Scientific Street. They supposedly could see Cornwallis’ camp from there and determined that the British force wasn’t as large as earlier reported. Stories abound at Deep River Friends that British soldiers are buried around the cemetery, but not inside. British soldiers may also be buried at the cemetery at the old Jamestown Friends Meeting in High Point City Lake Park.

tions, perform music of the area and more. Parking for the event is at the Jaycee parking lot located at 3802 Jaycee Park Dr. Shuttles will be available to the event site. The Battle of Guilford Courthouse played a major role in the American Revolution. It was fought on March 15, 1781, between the American forces under Greensboro’s namesake, Nathanael Greene, and British Commander Lord Charles Cornwallis. Various parts of the battle took place on portions of land scattered along a path from Lawndale Drive eastward along

what is now New Garden Road. Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, located at 2332 New Garden Road, will be open both days with limited programs due to staff shortages. It was the first Revolutionary War battlefield preserved by Congress. Mark St. Paddy’s Day with a very Irish Stew By PaTTI dIaMOnd DIVAS ON A DIMe There are few things more universally comforting than a melt-in-your-mouth beef stew. The world is full of regional variations. France has Boeuf a la bourguignonne. Hungary has Goulash. Ireland has Guinness Beef Stew. What sets Ireland’s stew apart is the addition of stout beer, namely Guinness. Made in Dublin since 1759, when we think of Guinness we think of Ireland. In this stew, the alcohol evaporates, leaving a rich and robust depth of flavor that complements the succulent beef, hearty potatoes and sweet carrots. When choosing your beef for this (or any) stew, don’t buy pre-cut meat labeled “stew beef.” You’re paying a premium for someone to cut your food for you. Plus, you have little control over what cut of meat you’re getting. Don’t waste a tender cut on a stew that’s going to simmer low and slow because the lean meat will cook to the point of drying out. Choose a tougher cut with plenty of connective tissue, collagen and fat, such as chuck, short rib or point cut brisket. Those cuts become tender, juicy and flavorful when slowly simmered in liquid, giving stew that velvety mouthfeel. GUINNESS BEEF STEW Yield: 12 servings Prep: 20 minutes Cook: 2 hours 4 slices bacon — chopped 2-3 pounds stew beef (see text above) 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Vegetable oil 2 medium yellow onions, chopped 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste 1 bottle (11.2 ounce) Guinness Extra Stout 1 can (14.5 oz. or 1 1/2 cups) beef broth 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 pound carrots, peeled and chopped 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, chopped 2 cups water 1 1/2 cup peas 1. Prepare the meats by chopping the bacon and cutting the beef into big bitesized chunks. Chop up all the veggies. In a large soup pot or Dutch oven on medium heat, cook bacon until crisp, remove with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pan. 2. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, mix the flour, garlic, salt and pepper, and toss the beef cubes to coat. Working in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan, brown the beef in the bacon drippings on all sides. Add cooking oil if the pan gets dry. Set aside. (By now you’ll have lovely brown bits on the bottom of the pan. Don’t burn this! Lower the heat to low.) 3. Add the onions, stirring frequently, adding oil, if necessary, until just softened. Add the tomato paste, stirring into the onions to evenly coat. Add the Guinness and bring it to a simmer, scraping up the browned bits, deglazing the bottom of the pot. Add the beef broth and Worcestershire. Boil for 2 minutes.

stout beer sets Ireland’s stew apart. 4. Return the bacon and beef to the pot along with the carrots and potatoes. Add water and stir to combine. (At this point you can throw everything into a slow cooker if you wish. Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours.) 5. To continue cooking on the stovetop, bring the stew to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. In the final 10 minutes, add the peas. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. When you host your St. Patrick’s gathering, take a cue from classic Irish pub

grub, and serve big mugs of stew, with soda bread slathered with butter and a pint of beer on the side. Should you have any leftovers, they’ll freeze beautifully. Erin go Bragh!
