TOWN
COMPILEd By NORMA B. dENNIS SpRING lIttER SWEEp The Town of Jamestown will hold its annual Spring Litter Sweep April 24 from 9-11 a.m. Individuals interested in participating should meet at the Jamestown Food Lion parking lot at the corner of Main Street and Ragsdale Road. RSVP to 336-454-1138. Plan to wear long-sleeve shirts and high-top shoes to protect against unforeseen hazards. FIRE HyDRANt tEStING The Pinecroft Sedgefield Fire District has begun its semi-annual fire hydrant testing and will continue this operation throughout the month of April. This testing includes all hydrants in the Town of Jamestown. Hydrants are tested to ensure they are operating properly and are able to produce the required water pressure when needed. Opening hydrants can sometimes cause a temporary discoloration of water in nearby homes. The discoloration is not harmful and can be cleared up by running the water for a few minutes. The testing not only ensures the protection of citizens, but also is an evaluation indicator used by the NC Response Rating System, which evaluates the fire district according to the protection they offer.
P&R approves new Park Master Plan By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Parks and Recreation Steering Committee unanimously approved an additional plan for the ball fields at Jamestown Park at its April 5 meeting. This is the fourth concept design and calls for two ages 12-and-undersize baseball fields and one regulation-size soccer field on the site of the current fields. Soccer is one of the biggest uses of the activity fields at the Park. Synthetic turf would be used instead of grass and the new
soccer field would overlap both baseball fields. The estimated cost of the new plan would be just over $6.1 million, higher than the $4.8 million in the first proposal. In August, the Town Council tabled a vote on the third design, which the P&R committee had approved in June, because the ball fields had been removed from the proposed Parks & Recreation Master Plan. “I don’t want to approve something that I’m not totally Graphic submitted in support of, with the idea The additional plan for Jamestown Park remains unchanged from the earlier plan other than reinstating the ball fields, SEE PARk, PAGe 2 left, and adding a soccer field in the same area.

By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Have you ever wanted to learn to paint? Have you ever wanted to visit or revisit Mendenhall Homeplace? On April 24 you will have the chance to do both as Wine and Design holds a “Painting the Past” event at the Richard Mendenhall Homeplace, 603 W. Main St. in Jamestown. “The event is being held at the Homeplace to give Wine and Design guests a unique location to visit for their painting session and a more visual understanding of where the inspiration came from for the paintings,” said Rachel Orio, secretary and program chair of the Historic Jamestown Society. Caitlin Antwine of Wine and Design has created three templates from which participants can select, all containing pottery. “We felt pottery would be a great representation of the Homeplace,” Orio said. “One of Richard Mendenhall’s trades was pottery and pottery is significant in many stories in the history of the Homeplace. “Caitlin selected specific pieces from
our collection as well as colors and other elements to capture the history of life at the Homeplace.” Wine & Design stresses that no artistic talent is needed, just the desire to have fun. Antwine will take the time to guide painters step by step to complete their very own take-home masterpiece. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Mendenhall Homeplace. Tours will be available afterwards. The Homeplace is open from 1-4 on Saturdays. “Painting the Past” will be held April 24 from noon to 2 p.m. Weather permitting, the class will take place outdoors. In case of rain, the class will move inside the historic Bank Barn. Alcohol is not permitted on the property for this event, but guests can bring other drinks and food. Masks are required. For tickets for the $40 event, visit www. wineanddesign.com/calendar/jamestownnc/event/painting-at-mendenhall-homeplace. catalogs) to donate to local charities. The food items will be delivered to the David Wilson Food Pantry at the Lutheran Church of Our Father. Council to see preliminary budget By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Town Council has a full agenda for April 20, perhaps foremost being the presentation of the preliminary budget and Capital Improvement Plan for fiscal year 2021-2022. A vote on the budget and plan will probably come in May. The Council will also have the opportunity to approve the updated Jamestown Park and Golf Course Master Plan. In August, the Council tabled discussion of the initial plan

Also under consideration is approval of phases 1 and 2 of the Code Enforcement proposal and accompanying budget amendment. Lindsey Lengyel, Water Resources Manager with Blue Stream Environmental, will give a presentation on stormwater utilities and an upcoming audit. Ross Sanderlin, golf course manager, and Jamey Claybrook, golf course superintendent, will present reports.

‘Painting the Past’ at the Homeplace
It is no secret there are bad people out there just waiting for the opportunity to get personal information they can use to steal what is rightfully yours. To help eliminate some of that problem, the Sedgefield Woman’s Club is resuming a past project by sponsoring a free community event where people can have their confidential documents and papers shredded to make them and the community safer. It will be held April 17 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Harris Teeter parking lot in the Adams Farm Shopping Center. “Our usual fundraising efforts have looked different this past year due to the pandemic,” said Patti Mor-

Area Deaths & Funerals William “Brian” Flinchum William “Brian” Flinchum, 50, of Thomasville, went to his Heavenly Home Tuesday April 6, 2021. He was born on May 26, 1970 in Guilford County, the youngest of three children of Russell and Sonja Flinchum. He was raised in Jamestown and graduated from Ragsdale High in 1988, and was employed as Human Resources Manager at Tarheel Paper and Supply Co, where he has worked for 30 years. Brian loved to fish at the Outer Banks, was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed traveling; especially going on cruises and to the beach with his wife, Sandra. His favorite college basketball team was North Carolina Tarheels; but his true love and passion was spending time with his family; “his children and grandchildren were his pride and joy”. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, papaw, and friend to all that knew him, and will be dearly missed. A celebration of Brian’s life will be held on Sunday afternoon, at 3 pm., in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, with Pastor Jonathan Robbins officiating. His family will receive friends Sunday, from 1:00 until 2:45 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials in Brian’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 7029, Albert Pick Road, Suite 200, Greensboro, NC 27409. Online condolences may be made on Brian’s tribute page at www.cumbyfuneral.com. Services are in the care of Cumby Family Funeral Service of Archdale.

continued from front that I’m going to change it in a month or two,” said Councilmember Martha Wolfe in August. “I think it is important to have Plan B or another plan, keeping the ball fields located in Jamestown Park.” At that time, the Planning Board was deep into discussions regarding a proposed development on the Johnson property on Guilford College and Mackay roads. The developer, Diamondback Investment Group, had offered to construct fields on the site and turn them over to the town upon completion, thus eliminating the need for duplication at Jamestown Park. With Diamondback’s proposal denied by both the Planning Board and Town Council, that option appears to be off the table. “It is too early to speculate on any new ball fields or
any potential developments including recreation amenities for the public,” said Planning Director Matthew Johnson. “Those topics will need to be discussed once a new proposal is received [from Diamondback].” Johnson believes the Jamestown Park upgrades would be phased in, with the ball fields being last. “The field sizes could vary a little, just depending on the need of the community as we get closer,” said Scott Coakley, parks superintendent. “We would reevaluate before construction to better determine what the community needs are that time.” Prior to creating the first Master Plan, McAdams Company surveyed residents of Jamestown to learn what they would like to see at Jamestown Park.
Honoring life & Caring For You & Your Family... it’s what we do.
“A lot of the community input we received called for an open lawn area [where the ball fields are] where people can just hang out, throw a Frisbee, and a small stage area,” Johnson said, noting residents believe the fields are not used much. The Town Council disagreed, as did residents who did not understand where their fields went. “There are some issues [with the fields], mostly with the drainage,” Johnson said. The lack of lighting is one reason the fields are not fully used. The alternative plan would include six new stadium lights for the fields. Lighting alone would cost $450,000. It’s possible the Town could rent the lighting rather than purchasing it outright and pay for use only.

two additional shelters and a natural area. A net would be erected between the fields and golf course since many errant golf balls end up on the ball fields. The parking lot between the playground and the fields will be repaved. Any plans for Jamestown Park – excluding the golf course – is contingent on the Town receiving Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant funding. However, PARTF will not fund renovations, which is what it would take to upgrade the existing ball fields.
Nick Lowe, of McAdams, said the Land and Water Conservation Fund from the Department of the Interior currently offers funding that could be used for the fields. The Town Council will review the Parks and Recreation Master Plan with the new alternative plan at its April 20 meeting. At that time, the Council will not be required to choose which plan they prefer for the current ball fields. The plan will contain both ball field concepts and one will be chosen in the future when it comes time to do the work.

“Having synthetic turf is low maintenance and would eliminate some of the field maintenance issues,” Johnson said, “plus it would allow people to play even if it had rained recently.” “This is a more efficient use of the land,” said Bob Wilson, chair of the P&R Committee, of the alternative plan, “even though it’s more expensive.” Other items included in the Jamestown Park Master Plan call for two dog parks, an inclusive playground area for all ages and abilities, a renovated basketball court, relocated volleyball court,

By donna erickson Donna's Day: Creative Family Fun This spring, as we near Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, the thought hits me how I’m actually very grateful for recycling and the way my family, the neighborhood and our city has embraced it. It was so difficult when we started out, wasn’t it? But now, we do it as second nature. I’m not sure if the world turns a little easier because I no longer toss soup cans, pickle jars and newspapers into the garbage bin. But the idea of recycling makes sense, because it causes each of us, as members of families and the larger community, to be responsible for what we consume. When we’re not sorting the recycled items for curbside pickup, we’re scrubbing them out to be reused and repurposed. If it’s a plastic deli tub, it may end up in a lunch bag as a veggie container. A half-gallon milk carton is easily transformed into a bird feeder, and cardboard egg cups are perfect compartments for growing seedlings that will be transplanted into the summer garden. And then there are all those clear plastic bottles that juice, peanuts and flavored waters come in. Peel off the labels, wash them inside and out, and
