Media specialists create fabric books It seems natural for media specialists (once known as librarians) to be interested in writing books. After all, they are constantly exposed to the creativity within their pages. But Vicki Misenheimer and Mylena Kelly, Haynes-Inman Education Center media specialist and assistant media specialist, respectively, are taking storytelling to another level. They not only are writing stories that students at their school could enjoy, they are creating the books of fabric. “I actually started one about four years ago,” Misenheimer said. “I had all the fabric donated and thought a fabric book was something I could do. I told my niece what I was thinking and she suggested I do one about coffee. “When I showed Mylena what I had started, she encouraged me to continue.” The result is a children’s picture book called Kaldi and the Three
Goats – The Story of Coffee. It is being written and crafted with the special needs population in mind. Misenheimer felt the texture of the book would make it perfect for H-I students, many of whom enjoy the sensation of touch. Later, Vicki Simmons, adapted physical education teacher at Haynes-Inman, showed Misenheimer a book titled What Can a Small Bird Be, written and illustrated by Susie Wilde. The book was originally made with fabric, then photographed to create a paper book. This added the possibility of multiple copies made from the original fabric book. Misenheimer’s story might be considered historical fiction. She adapted an old folk tale about the discovery of coffee and created three goats as the main characters. Kelly later gave them names to enhance their personalities. Using upholstery fabric, Misenheimer sewed background panels, then began filling the fabric pages with characters that convey the SEE FABRIC, PAGe 2

Deadly disease once treated in Jamestown By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Most of us in the United States have not lived through a pandemic, at least not one that caused such widespread ramifications as CoVID-19. Websites differ as to whether the following were pandemics or epidemics, but they were serious, nonetheless: Swine Flu 2009-10, HIV/ AIDS 2005-12, Avian Flu in 1968, Asian Flu 1956-58, Spanish Flu 1918-20 and Cholera 1910-11, to name a few. Although you’d never know it by looking at the campus now, at one time, the land where Guilford Technical Community College now sits was home to a sanatorium that treated tuberculosis, the leading cause of death at the turn of the 20th century. Also called consumption, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the best treatment was thought to be rest and fresh air, often in a rural setting. Patients were often away from their families for years. According to the TB Alliance, the problem is still with us and is classified as a pandemic: “TB is the leading infectious cause of death in the world, killing 1.5 million each year.” With the rural setting in mind, several Greensboro citizens, including Cesar Cone – who himself was diagnosed with TB – created the Guilford County Tuberculosis Sanatorium on High Point Road (now East Main Street) on property once owned by the Iddings family. The first cottage sanatorium opened in 1920. Reports show that 125 people in Guilford County died of tuberculosis in 1920. on Dec. 20, 1921 voters passed a $100,000 bond issue to finance the sanatorium. According to a report by Mrs. Annette Sloan Tinsley, dated oct. 31, 1923, “the medical society passed a resolution whereby every case of tuberculosis coming under their observation shall be reported to the county hospital. This makes the hospital a clearing house for all tuberculosis work.” “The Guilford County Tuberculosis Sanatorium is the first institution built under the act of 1917, which authorized any county to build and maintain a tuberculosis hospital by bond issue Photo courtesy GTCC archives

Spruill, the sanatorium’s first superintendent. “The object of this institution is to have a place where the tuberculosis patients of Guilford County can go to be cured, and not a place where people go to die.” The new brick sanatorium opened in January 1924. Reports at the time called it “one of the most modern and best equipped institutions of its kind in the South.” Cost with furnishings was $165,000. The first floor of the main building housed a waiting room, business office, X-ray rooms, exam rooms, dining room, kitchen, and staff dining room. The second floor contained physician’ and nurses’ quarters. There were 60 beds, all situated on porches. According to an area newspaper at the time, the “wards were light and pleasant with views of Guilford County. Each ward is screened, faces the south and affords plenty of sunlight, something needed in the treatment of the disease. The beds will be kept on the porch at all times except when there is a blizzard, or exceedingly stormy weather, making it necessary to move them inside.” Patients were charged $1 per day which included everything but personal laundry. no patient was turned away for inability to pay, however. Staying connected to loved ones during COViD-19 By dENNIS TOMAN CertIFIeD eLDer LAW AttOrNeY, GreeNSBOrO CoVID-19 has changed our daily lives. From how we work to how we communicate, we are all trying to navigate change and find our new normal. For families with loved ones in nursing and assisted living homes, this has been a particularly challenging time. Finding new ways to stay connected and continuing to provide love, care and safety takes an emotional toll—both on the caregiver and their loved one. Recently, I stood outside a nursing facility’s front door to assist a resident with the notarization of a document. Her daughter stood beside me. It was the first time mother and daughter had seen each other in weeks. After fond goodbyes, the door closed, and I remained outside with the daughter to notarize additional documents. I glimpsed at the window behind me and discovered mom, looking at her daughter with love and longing. Instead of returning to her room, she lingered to see her daughter a few more minutes. This brief and bittersweet interaction was the highlight of their day, and it touched me deeply, too. now more than ever, staying connected to the people we love is critical. Across the country, and in our own community, visitor restrictions and social distancing protocols have been put in place to protect the health of this population. Adults ages 65 and older are among the most vulnerable populations at high risk for contracting CoVID-19. According to the CDC, 8 out of 10 deaths reported in the U.S. have been in adults age 65 old and older. That statistic alone is enough to cause worry. It’s natural to be concerned for the older adults in your family. Social isolation can lead to a greater increase in symptoms of depression and anxiety. And the sad reality is that individuals of all ages are dying from this disease. However, there are several actions you can take to ensure your loved one is protected and cared for—and manage your own worry—during these challenging times.
ADVERTISE IN THE JAMESTOWN NEWS! We offer great, affordable packages to fit any budget. Call 336-316-1231.
Make sure estate plans and living wills are up to date This is especially imperative for not only your loved one but also your own estate plan and living will if your health is compromised and you can no longer care for your loved one or pass away. Health care and financial powers of attorney are particularly important. Who will make medical or financial decisions for you if you cannot? And who is the backup if your agent is unavailable due to their own health problems or need to self-quarantine?
Video Chat If your loved one has access to a mobile phone, tablet or computer, they can benefit from seeing you and hearing your voice. Platforms such as FaceTime, Zoom and Skype are popular and easy to use. Check with staff at the care community for their availability to assist your loved one.
Create a Care Package Drop off a care package for your loved including some of their favorite things. Avoid homemade food as everything needs to be wiped off at the door.
Engage Their Minds Provide your loved one with puzzles, Sudoku, crosswords, word searches, adult coloring books, playing cards, magazine subscriptions, and craft supplies to keep their minds engaged.
Show Your Love Send flowers. Send cards. Write sidewalk chalk messages outside their facility. Visit them at their window. Music for the Soul Load some of your loved one’s favorite music on an MP3 player, share a playlist through iTunes or Spotify, or drop off some CDs.
Acts of Kindness Show your appreciation for the staff at your loved one’s facility. Donate cleaning supplies. Drop off goody bags. Send a card or wrapped candy bars. Buy lunch. Above all, hang in there! This is a new path on the elder care journey, and one that can be successfully navigated through creativity, kindness and perseverance.

story. The goats discover coffee berries and after eating them are energized to dance. They share the berries with a boy, Kaldi, and everyone enjoys the delicious treat. When Pumpkin’s Story, a book about a pony that gets braces for her deformed legs, showed up at the school’s book fair, Misenheimer and Kelly also decided to create a textile book about her using a condensed version of the story. “We are adapting the story for our students,” Misenheimer explained. “Adapting is what we are all about at Haynes-Inman. We started with a patchworkfabric pony that had been glued to paper by a former student.”
“I put braces on her legs to develop the character farther,” Kelly said, “then made several similar Pumpkin ponies and started working on the fabric backgrounds. The mother pony in the story has a mane and tail made from the actual mane of one of our custodian’s horse.” Although taking the lead in most of the work, the goal of the two women is to allow students to collaborate on the book, doing some of it during media classes. “I think the kids will get more out of helping to create the book than just reading it,” Kelly said. Misenheimer and Kelly plan to get in touch with The Dodo, an animal advocacy group that made a video about Pumpkin, and the
Twist of Fate Farm & Sanctuary, which took Pumpkin in, to let them know they were inspired by Pumpkin’s story and what they are doing to share it. To learn more about textile books and ways to publish them, Misenheimer contacted Marguerite (Peg) Gignoux, a textile artist and educator who uses fabric, paper, thread, dye and ink as common ingredients in her artwork. “As a textile artist, I reside firmly in the realm of collage in which there are infinite possibilities to add and subtract shapes, colors, textures and patterns,” Gignoux explained in her bio. “I grew up decoding my world through cloth.” Misenheimer invited her
to visit Haynes-Inman to familiarize her with the students and the project. After her visit to the school, Gignoux was able to make specific suggestions about moving forward with the fabric books. “Peg’s visit to HaynesInman was certainly inspirational,” Kelly said. “It’s important for us to explore different ways to tell a story or communicate literacy to our students. Using fabric/ textiles as a palette is new and exciting.” The Haynes-Inman media staff would like to get grants to allow Gignoux to collaborate with them on the books and to possibly pay to get them published in a way that could be used beyond their own school.

continued from front with Dr. Spruill, succeeded him in 1934. Bonner served until the hospital closed. Many patients were ambulatory and often did crafts, walked on a track, read, exercised, and sat in the sun. They received nutritious meals and regular medications. With the development of drugs to treat the disease, the number of cases in Guilford County dropped and the sanatorium closed
Christmas Eve 1955. Remaining patients were moved to a state sanatorium in Moore County. The Industrial Educational Center (now GTCC) opened at the location in 1958 as a vocational training center to supplement the public school system. The sanatorium buildings were used for over ten years before being replaced with modern classroom buildings.
