Ball fields could move from park

If the Jamestown Town Council approves the Planned Use Development (PUD) amendment to the Land Development Ordinance on May 16, and if Diamondback Investment Group honors their offer, the ball fields at Jamestown Park could be a matter of history.
Diamondback’s second plan, proposed in March, for the Johnson property along Guilford College and Mackay Roads includes three ball fields (two baseball, one softball) and parking, constructed at their expense. Once completed, these areas will be donated to the Town of Jamestown. The move was in response to citizen reaction to Diamondback’s initial development plans, unveiled in February.
The Parks and Recreation Steering Committee learned of this option during a nearly one-hour virtual meeting on May 5 as McAdams Company representatives, the consultant working on the plan, presented two concepts for Jamestown Park, specifically the playground and ball fields section, an area of approximately 10 acres. Both concepts included a splash pad, something

However, the Steering Committee was not in favor of the splash pad, citing the need for constant supervision and the need for increased liability. The committee was in favor of the changes to the current ball fields area, with fitness/exercise spaces, landscaping, dog park, multi-use pavilion, new picnic shelters
and a walking trail connecting to the entrance to the Greenway across East Fork Road. Other options include a community garden and farmers’ market space. The playground area would be inclusive, meaning all ages and abilities would feel at home. “It’s really great to see the number of items to get kids involved,” said Steve Owen, committee member.
“There are a lot for adults and some for middle-aged children. This will bring in the smaller ones and have more of a draw for them. “Good work. But residents of the health care center at Pennybyrn certainly enjoyed the special parade held on its campus May 10. “It was absolutely amazing,” said Pamela Olson, transitional services coordinator. “Approximately 100 cars participated, as well as the High Point police and fire departments. People came from near and far and in between. Even Pennybyrn staff members not working and volunteers participated. “There were people holding signs in the backs of trucks and hanging out the sunroofs of their cars.
When we planned this, we never anticipated the response we got.” Because COVID-19 had restricted visitors from the health care center, the staff at Pennybyrn discussed ways to help make a personal connection between residents and their family and friends. Since Mother’s Day was just a few days away and with the promise of good weather, the situation seemed to shout for a parade. “People came from across the state to have that glimpse of their loved ones,” Olson said. “It was great. There were a lot of happy tears shed. You could just feel the love that was there. Cedarwood Garden Club Yard & Mailbox of the Month
It looks like the Jamestown Town Council will finally make a decision on the Planned Unit Development (PUD) amendment to the Land Development Ordinance. At the May 19 virtual meeting at 6:30 p.m., the Council will hold a public hearing to consider the text amendment, which will add a new zoning district to the LDO. The Council will also hold a public hearing to consider an amendment to the Code of Ordinances regarding the operation of the water and wastewater system. Under new business, GTCC’s new president, Dr. Anthony Clarke, will discuss the 2020 Bond Referendum the school has requested for renovations to the campus.
Also, Finance Director Judy Gallman will present the preliminary budget and Capital Improvement Plan for 2020-2021. She will request a date for a special Council meeting to adopt the budget and CIP, which will go into affect July 1. The Council had to cancel the annual budget retreat in March because of COVID19 virus precautions. The Council will consider a new lease agreement to the Jamestown Public Library. The meeting will be available live to the public on the Town’s YouTube Channel, https://www.youtube.com/ channel/UCmi_MH3cM_ DfOvhsLO9ZC6w, and also will be available after the meeting. The Council held a closed session May 13 to discuss the annual performance evaluation of the town manager. This meeting was not available on the YouTube channel.

It was spontaneous and magical.” The parade started at the facility’s entrance from Greensboro Road, wound through the back of the healthcare campus and out again. Residents were lined up 6 feet apart to view the procession. Although held on Mother’s Day, the parade was not just for mothers. People also came to see their dads, aunts, uncles and friends. “We have never done anything like this before, because we have never had to close our gates before,” Olson said. “But the parade was everything we anticipated and more. A lot of people have already asked when we could do it again. “Our mission at Pennybyrn is to demonstrate God’s love to all we touch. I think we knocked it out of the park with the parade.”

That is what I miss the most during these uncertain times. COVID-19 finds me coping not only on a personal level, but on a professional one as well. They still have stories to tell, but the lines of communication have been broken, or at least crimped. These items are the result of a survey conducted by McAdams last year to learn what the town was looking for in the way of park amenities. The top four facilities/amenities were: dog park, fitness walking loops, senior center and community gardens. “These [suggestions] focused on the top ten items [in the survey],” said Lowe, noting that a splash pad was one of the top suggestions. Scott Coakley, Jamestown’s Parks Superintendent, said the basketball court is one of the most used features of the park, even though it did not rate high on the survey. One of the concept drawings has
removed them but some committee members hope it can be retained. “I think anything with exercising and the walking trails and, of course, the basketball, all those features would be key,” Coakley said. Jared Roxberry, president of the Jamestown Youth League, which uses the ball fields, noticed that the plans omit the fields. Assistant Town Manager/Planning Director Matthew Johnson said if the Johnson property development comes to fruition, the plan is to move the fields there. “Our intent is to have better baseball facilities, just not at this location,” Johnson said. “We just do not have the room for that currently. ing some part of the golf course. “It’s not a done deal, obviously. We’re waiting to see where that all pans out. We’re just at the planning stages.” There are currently two fields at Jamestown Park so Diamondback’s offer would increase the number of fields available. Lowe mentioned that the typography around the fields is eroding and causing a maintenance problem. McAdams will review the committee’s suggestions and bring a third concept to the next meeting on May 15. Johnson wants to present the concept to the Town Council at its June 16 meeting. Once the Council voices approval, the Town can begin the process of applying for a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant from the state. This is not a fast process. John Capes, the Council’s representative on the P&R Committee, said it could take years. “Nothing happens quickly,” Johnson said about the grant process. “It moves at the speed of government. At a minimum, it’s a 3-5 year plan to get funding.”
