Food Trucks to invade City Lake Park By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com It’s back! High Point’s 2nd Annual One Stop Food Truck Rally will be held at High Point City Lake Park on May 18 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. At press time, eight food trucks have signed up to offer their creations at the rally: Porter House, Roadway Dawgs, Fresh Catch Seafood, Home Slice, Smitty’s, Zekos 2 Go, Cherry on Top and Taste Jamaica. Several vendors also will be on hand, including Paparazzi Jewelry. The Parks & Recreation Department will have a table set up so those attending can learn of upcoming events in the city. The Brothas Band will perform live during event. This is the first year the rally will be held at City Lake Park. Last year’s event was at the High Point Athletic Complex. “We felt like the natural beauty of that setting [at the Park] would be a treat for people who want to come and enjoy the food trucks and music,” said Paige Moné, marketing coordinator for the City of High Point Parks & Recreation. “High Point City Lake Park is such a treasure. We think having it there will just add to the experience.” Amusements at the park
will be open during the event and are open weekends only through June 10, when they will be open on weekdays. The pool, however, will not open until Memorial Day. Through June 9 the pool will be open weekends only but beginning June 10, it will be open weekdays and weekends 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday-Friday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays and holidays. High Point City Lake Park is located at 602 W. Main St., Jamestown.

The May 21 Jamestown Town Council meeting agenda is full of items that will affect the citizens of the town. At the top of the list is a consideration to amend the town charter to allow for staggered terms for Town Council. The Council held a public hearing in April but received little input from residents. Currently, members are elected every two years. The proposal is to change to four-year staggered terms beginning with this year’s election. If approved, in November, the two candidates who receive the highest number of votes would be elected for four-year terms and the two candidates with the next highest votes will serve two-year terms. At the municipal election in 2021 and every four years from then on, two members of the Council will be elected for four-year terms. In other words, only half of the Council would be elected every two years, rather than the election of a totally new Council. The position of mayor would become a four-year term. Also on the agenda is the presentation of the 2019-20 recommended budget and Capital Improvement Plan. The Council will hear citizen input regarding the CIP and hold a public hearing to consider both the budget and CIP. The vote to approve both plans will take place at the June 18 Council meeting and go into effect July 1. At the March meeting, Town Attorney Beth Koonce presented the offer of a 2.78-acre property donation from the City of High Point at 107-115 Kingsdale Court that lies within the Cedarwood neighborhood. Since the property is unbuildable and Jamestown sewer lines run through it, High Point is offering it to Jamestown at no cost. In April, Koonce asked for the matter to be tabled until May, until such time as a troublesome clause could be resolved. Public Services Director Paul Blanchard is scheduled to present an update on the East Main Street (Lydia) sidewalk project. Several proclamations will be read, committee members appointed and a discussion held regarding condemnation of 301 Lee Street. Following the open session, the Council will go into closed session for a job evaluation discussion. The Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend. Comment on the proposed budget and Capital Improvement Plan is encouraged.
Band director honored by peers One of the highest honors in any profession is recognition by your peers for a job well done. Andy Oldham, music director at Ragsdale High School, has experienced such an honor. He was recently named 2019-2020 Band Director of the Year for the Central District Bandmasters Association. Each May, members select a band director for the award from among all those in the 14 counties that comprise the association. “I was surprised by the recognition,” Oldham said. “Drew Leib, a former music assistant at Ragsdale nominated me. All the
directors (in the association) are superstars.” Oldham will receive a plaque recognizing the honor in January 2020 during the Central District All-District Clinic. Oldham has spent his entire 20-year career as a band director at Ragsdale High School, coming there straight out of college. At that time, he was the only band director of the high school and neighboring Jamestown Middle School. “Our high school kids had band at the end of the day and the students would leave here to go to the middle school to do peer tutoring of band students there,” Oldham recalls. Today, the music program at Ragsdale includes marching band, concert band, orchestra, honors
orchestra, Jazz band, pep band for basketball, percussion ensemble, honors percussion ensemble and honors wind ensemble. Some of the groups meet during class time and many practice after school. There are approximately 120 students who participate in the various music programs. “Christopher Henry gets students started off in sixth grade at Jamestown Middle and Justin Johnson works at both schools,” Oldham said. “During marching season, both come over after school to help here. Having three directors is due to the support of the community, teachers and administration at Ragsdale.” see band, page 10

Oak Ridge Military Institute BY LINDA WILLARD JameStowN frieNdS meetiNg Quakers (the Religious Society of Friends) are well known as one of the peace churches. Quakers have always encouraged their young men to be Conscientious Objectors during wartime and find alternative service. So why did members of a peace church build a military institute? Keep reading and you will find the answer! On April 7, 1850 (4th month, 7th 1850) forty-three members of the Oak Ridge, North Carolina community contributed a total of $629.00 and appointed five trustees to form the Oak Ridge Institute. Among those persons who wanted a better educational opportunity for young men in the community of Oak Ridge, North Carolina, other parts of the state, and other states as well, were members of the Benbow family of Oak Ridge, North Carolina. Both Jesse and C.R. Benbow were founding members of Oak Ridge Institute. Several generations of the Benbow family were educated at Oak Ridge Institute both as a Quaker school and later as a military school. The Quakers founded the school as a “finishing school” or preparatory school for young men. Oak Ridge Institute opened its doors on March 3, 1853
William Daniel Stewart
(3rd month, 3rd, 1853). The school offered a classical curriculum of eighteen courses. The student body consisted of sixty-three students. The charter issued by the state of North Carolina states that the trustees are to “create a body politic and corporate for the purpose of maintaining a school of high grade at or near Oak Ridge, Guilford County, for the intellectual and moral training of the youth of the county of the white race
under the name and style of “Oak Ridge Institute,” The Civil War brought devastation to the school. In 1862 the entire student body volunteered for service in the Confederate army. This and financial difficulties brought about by the war caused the school to close. This also ended the involvement by the Quakers. While Oak Ridge Institute was a Quaker school, it was never a military school. The name was changed to Oak Ridge
Military Institute when the school was able to reopen after the Civil War. Despite the fact that Oak Ridge Military Institute is not a Quaker school, it does have one last Quaker connection. In 1914, George Williamson “Will” Armfield, Jr., a Greensboro architect from an old Guilford County, North Carolina Quaker family, designed the Alumni Hall at Oak Ridge Military Institute. His son, Joseph, a builder, joined his father in this project.

membership) by her Quaker meeting. Prior to the Civil War, a series of religious revivals swept the state of North Carolina. These revivals apparently struck a chord with Chipman. Chipman began attending Methodist religious services. On June 25, 1832, it was recorded that almost all of the members of Friedland Moravian Church in Winston Salem, North Carolina, went to Waughtown to hear Chipman preach. At this time, Chipman had joined the Reformed Methodist church. Chipman’s early Quaker training caused her a great deal of anxiety in her new denomination. Chipman thought that singing was not an acceptable worship in the Devine sight. At this time, Quakers did not approve of or use any type of music during their worship service. Chipman once wrote that “On one occasion, going to church all alone and meditating, these words came into my mind, with such weight and distinctness, that at the first impulse, I thought some one had spoken to me: ‘Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice
Hanes
like a trumpet, and show my people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins.” Chipman recorded that she stopped instantly, and a most solemn feeling came over her. She reasoned with herself as to whether she should go to church or turn back home again. She stated that she felt an awful weight at church, and that she should become a reproach to the cause of truth. After some time, her mind became calm and she went on to the church service. Shortly after this event, Chipman began writing her first book. The book did not appear in print for several years after this event. In 1852, the Methodist conference provided the funds to publish her book, Earnest Entreaties and Appeals to the Unconverted with Persuasions of Religious Duties. The book contained eighteen chapters which were really just very cleverly written sermons. On July 7, 1870, Chipman requested membership in Deep River Friends Meeting in present day High Point, North Carolina. Deep River Friends granted her request and Chipman

was once again a Quaker. In 1877, twenty-five years after the publication of her first book, Chipman published a second book. The title of this book was, A Wonderful Revelation of Heaven by an Angel Sent from God to Luzene Chipman. In this book, Chipman recounts how in April of 1877, she was “taken sick.” After about two weeks, Chipman apparently lapsed into a coma and believed that she had died. After she had been laid out for her wake, she regained consciousness Chipman believed that she had been taken to Heaven by an angel. The angel guided Chipman through the gates of Heaven and for a brief time showed her the New Jerusalem. Chipman was eventually told that she must return to earth and tell what she had seen. Chipman died on November 22, 1886, four months after the death of her husband, Joel on July 11, 1886. Luzene and Joel Chipman are both buried in the cemetery at Deep River Friends Meeting in High Point, North Carolina. It isn’t known if Joel Chipman joined the Quaker church.

coNtiNued from froNt the Richard Mendenhall Homeplace. Everyone is invited to attend. There are several nominations this year, including Alan Johnson and the Old Jamestown School Association. Johnson is a long-time resident of Jamestown and has contributed time and talent to not only helping save the old school, but to preserving Jamestown history. He was instrumental in having an historical marker erected at the site of his ancestors’ shoe factory on Oakdale Road. The Old Jamestown School Association was founded in 1986 and contains archives from the Jamestown Public School. These archives include items such as school yearbooks and newspapers, band uniforms, the antique school bell, original photographs and other special collections. Last year the award went to Jane Wade, a former schoolteacher and the first editor of the Jamestown News. She has been a member of the Historic Jamestown Society for many years and currently serves as vice president. She also edits
the Society’s quarterly newsletter, The Farmer’s Advocate. The Mary A. Browning Preservation Award recognizes excellence in the preservation, interpretation or research of Jamestown history in the categories of archeology, education or outreach, lifetime achievement, heritage interpretation, citizen activism/advocacy, structural preservation/restoration, archive activities, or other. The award honors Browning, a well-known local historian and genealogist. She has used census records and the National Archives as well as research in the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College, local libraries and newspaper archives to compile her ever-expanding notes on the area. Browning has almost single-handedly undertaken the responsibility of documenting the town’s history in five books, multiple newspaper articles as well as video. As a professional genealogist, she also uses her knowledge to help families research their roots.

Local ministry, a worthy cause, an international reach
In September 2001, as our country was faced with the horrible effects of 911, ZMI Family Ministries International was born in the heart of local wife and mom, Brenda Lancaster. She shares, “At the time everyone was worried, scared, and uncertain about the future. Women’s hearts were more focused on home and family that ever before. Little did I know that a prayer I offered 25 years earlier, during a time of stress we had with raising 3 boys, would birth a new ministry that would reach women and foster family restoration in ten countries around the world. Our story just goes to show that when God plants his idea in someone’s heart, He will establish their plans and minister hope and healing into the hearts of those who hear his message” “Make no mistake about it”, she says. “God is the one who birthed this ministry and carried it from Jamestown where it began
at Life Community Church, and then into the nations. I am certain of that because I never asked to go anywhere. Invitations came to us in a way that only God could have orchestrated – from the U.S., Brazil, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic, Honduras, El Salvador, and countries in the far east and Africa.” Many of the stories over the last 18 years are so dramatic that she is in the process of writing a book to recount the true stories that she and Tom, her husband of 51 years, and many others have witnessed. Over the years literally thousands of women, men and whole families have experienced restoration. She shares, “God created the family to be the foundation of society, and when the family falls apart, the society around it falls apart. We see this happening in our country and all around the world. Every family, including ours, has been affected. But there is a way to bring restoration to the
hearts of those already affected by it, and those hoping to build families that last a lifetime from this day forward.” Through the years ZMI curriculum has been written and is now offered in five languages. Classes have been established in homes, churches, and in the workplace that teach, mentor, and multiply at the end of each semester. In addition to teaching, humanitarian aid has been given in the poorest areas of the nations they serve. In Solidaridad, Nicaragua, on the edge of the largest landfill in Central America, generous supporters helped ZMI build a church and school. Families were mostly single moms without any opportunity to support their family. The church grew so much that most services are now held outside. The school now serves 34 students from K4-7th grade who could not afford the uniforms, books and supplies required to
attend public school. They also have 12 adult students in classes for reading, sewing, baking, jewelry making, hair cutting, and vegetable gardening as opportunities to support their families. The number of students will grow to the building capacity of 120 as soon as funds are raised to support them. ZMI is a 501c3 non-profit ministry supported entirely by donations from individuals, churches and two official fundraisers annually. Brenda clarifies, “We are not in ministry to make money, we are in ministry to serve people.” 98% of their workers are volunteers with only two part-time employees. Bryson Industries Inc., located in Thomasville and owned by their son David Lancaster, donates all their office and warehouse space, utilities, and much of their overhead so that every dime possible is used for ministry.” The ZMI Family Ministries
International Golf tournament, held in Jamestown Park, is one of the ministry’s two fundraisers. Sponsors and golfers can be guaranteed that their donations are used for actual ministry to the people. Brenda says, “We are deeply appreciative of the support the Jamestown community offers to ZMI.” They invite all golfers and everyone to come out to the park on May 16th, with tee-off at 1:00pm. A BBQ dinner and awards ceremony will be held at 6:00 or immediately upon completion of the tournament. Golfers can register online at www.zmiinternational.org, or contact Tournament Chairman Chris Cline at Christophermcline@gmail.com or 336-6896618. You may also contact Tom Lancaster at TomLancaster6@ gmail.com or 336-382-6825. Non-golfers may purchase BBQ dinner and Awards Ceremony tickets online at www.zmiinternational.org.

The banquet was held at the Family Life Center of the Rehoboth United Methodist Church in Greensboro with N.C. A&T head coach Sam Washington as the guest speaker. Each player will receive a $1,000 scholarship to use at the college of their choice. The top award winner reached a scholarship in memory of Bradley Faircloth, a former ACC association commissioner and supervisor of football officials. A award was also given in memory of Rich Brenner, former Fox8 sports anchor. Recipients were chosen by their high schools for their excellence on the field, in the community and in the classroom. The Corrigan-Faircloth Chapter has given $724,000 to 687 scholarship winners in the last 28 years. The winners from Guilford County Schools pictured are Cameron Blizard from Ragsdale and Graylon King from Southwest Guilford.

We’ve heard enough from Robert Mueller BY RICH LOWRY The last thing the world needs is more of Robert Mueller’s commentary, but Congress is determined to have him hold forth at a public hearing. It’s not as though we don’t already have the special counsel’s version of events. He mustered enormous investigate resources and took two years to write a 400-page report that is available to the public and presumably carefully written (although not necessarily carefully thought through). That should be enough for Mueller to stand on, and enough for Congress to make a decision to impeach or not impeach, or otherwise dispose of the matter as it sees fit. Instead, Mueller is going to be asked to expand on his already-expansive report that not only blew through Justice Department regulations, but inverted the long-standing burden of proof in the Anglo-American legal tradition. As a prosecutor, Mueller’s job — his sole job, really — was to decide whether or not the president was guilty of a crime. He declined to do this, choosing instead to write a nearly 200-page volume on obstruction cataloging what he found in the course of not making the only decision he was supposed to make. The relevant regulations say that at the conclusion of the special counsel’s work he or she “shall provide the Attorney General with a confidential report explaining the prosecution or declination decisions reached by the Special Counsel.” On obstruction, Mueller reached no such decision, and he didn’t write a confidential report, either — his report was clearly meant for public consumption. Besides that, he’s a stickler for the rules. Worse, as Trump’s special counsel Emmet Flood set out in an excoriating
letter, by stipulating that the evidence prevented him “from conclusively determining that no criminal conduct occurred,” Mueller stood the presumption of innocence on its head. By Mueller’s standard, the prosecutor doesn’t have to prove guilt — the target has to prove innocence. And if the target doesn’t, he will be disparaged in a longform quasi-indictment spelling out why he’s not exonerated. If anyone not named Donald J. Trump were subjected to this new prosecutorial standard, it would occasion widespread comment and — one hopes — consternation. Now, Congress wants Mueller to compound the offense by speaking publicly. It doesn’t want facts from him. They are already in the report. It wants opinions and sound bites, especially any embarrassing to the president. Congress wants him to spend a couple of high-profile hours further “not exonerating” the president. If Mueller had a proper understanding of his role, he would decline the congressional invitation. But the fact is that Mueller and Congress have a symbiotic relationship. For two years, Mueller was acting as, in effect, the lead counsel for an impeachment inquiry — bizarrely housed within the executive branch — while Congress wants to use his moral authority as a crutch at a time when it is vulnerable to charges of partisan overreaching. This, too, is not supposed to be how the system works. But we are long beyond anyone caring. For a swath of the political world and much of the media, all that matters is that Mueller “not exonerate” Trump, and the more, the better, in whatever format or forum. Give CBD to pets? Jury is still out BY SAM MAZZOTTA Paw’S corNer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is your take on using CBD oil on cats or dogs? A friend told me that giving it as a supplement could ease my dog’s separation anxiety. — Gary F., Tallahassee, Florida DEAR GARY: While there is no solid scientific proof indicating that CBD (cannabinoid), a nonintoxicating part of the marijuana plant, has an effect on pets, you can find quite a bit of anecdotal evidence from pet owners. Most are very confident that the supplement helps calm their dog or cat. I’ve spoken with a few pet owners who have had positive experiences supplementing their pet’s diet with CDB, which can be obtained legally over the counter in several states. For example, a friend was struggling with anxiety-induced aggression in one of her dogs –- during thunderstorms, he would begin snarling and snapping at
her other male dog. Daily supplementation with CBD oil has reduced the aggression, she says. Now, CBD oil isn’t a cure-all to treat every health or behavioral issue affecting a pet. It can help with anxiety. Its effects seem to be very subtle, on par with Bach’s Rescue Remedy, a daily homeopathic supplement. But it’s not a substitute for behavioral training and regular outdoor exercise — both of which can have a profound effect on a dog’s behavior. CBD supplements like oil or chews can be given daily at feeding time. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the package. The key seems to be making the supplements a daily routine, and increasing the dose may not work. But for owners trying to improve their dog’s well-being, it may be a supplement worth trying. Couch Theatre BY AMY ANDeRSON “Fighting With My Family” (PG-13) — When dad Ricky Knight (Nick Frost) catches siblings Raya (Florence Pugh) and Zak (Jack Lowden) fighting, instead of breaking the kids up, he offers pointers on Zak’s headlock. The Knights are a wrestling family. The kids step in the ring on the local circuit and eventually get a tryout for a professional spot with WWE, but only Raya is accepted. She is whisked off to Florida to train, an ocean away from her family, in the care of an obnoxious trainer played by Vince Vaughn and feeling that she’s not like the other girls. I went in
expecting it to be a little bit “girl power” — it’s based on the real-life story of WWE’s Paige, the youngest Diva Champion — but I left feeling like it’s more about becoming comfortable with your own strengths, a message that applies to Raya and her brother. “Happy Death Day 2U” (PG-13) — In this surprisingly infectious sequel to 2017’s “Happy Death Day,” Jessica Rothe returns as the perpetually perishing Tree Gelbman, who finally made it to Tuesday (in the original, she kept dying and returning to wake up again on Monday morning, a la “Groundhog Day”). But then her pal
Universal Pictures
Jessica Rothe in “Happy Death Day 2U” Ryan (Phi Vu) announces that HE is reliving the same day over again, and Tree jumps in with an assist. It had to be tremendously tricky to find a legitimate follow-up story, but producer Jason Blum and writer/ director Christopher Landon managed to hit just the right time loop, coming up with a
sequel that’s still irreverent and self-deprecating, funny and somehow novel, despite the fact that it’s a repetitive remake of itself. “Cold Pursuit” (R) — Liam Neeson headlines as Nels Coxsman, a snowplow driver in a Colorado ski town. He’s a nice fellow,
the hokey kinda guy whose fellow townsfolk would name “Citizen of the Year.” But then his son turns up dead of an overdose under some very suspicious circumstances (according to his brother with a criminal past), and ol’ Nels decides to go after the local drug kingpin, named The Viking. Is he a stone-hearted killer? Nope, just a guy with a death vendetta, a snowplow, a can-do attitude and lots of places to hide bodies. “Apollo 11” (G) — Director Todd Douglas Miller takes advantage of a previously undiscovered archive of footage and audio recordings surrounding
Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s voyage to the moon and back in the documentary “Apollo 11.” It covers preflight training, preparations and interviews and continues all the way through the actual moonwalk and return flight. Featuring voice-overs from Walter Cronkite, and painstakingly restored and scanned film, you’ll find new background on key players. While its commanding scale is best viewed in large-format IMAX, it’s still worthwhile as a rental, particularly if you have an interest in the space program. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

One Day Without Shoes
Millis Road Elementary held their seventh annual One Day without Shoes event on May 3. Students and staff spent the day without shoes to understand and empathize with the worldwide problem of shoelessness. Students played games, experienced a rocky walking path, and used their feet to paint grade level murals as part of the day. Specialists teachers, Tammy Larrick, Ashley Dunford, Gina Franco, and Nate Reeser led this whole-school service learning project. Ragsdale High School volunteer, Aubrey Peoples, also pitched in to facilitate the day. In addition to the event, students, staff, and the community collect new or gently used shoes of all sizes to give to those without shoes. This year marks the fifth year the school will send their shoe collection to the Democratic Republic of Congo through the Ntibonera Foundation. Shoes will be collected through May 24. Please contact larrict@gcsnc.com for more information.

I would go home and practice all the time. After that there was no option but to continue with music.” Oldham enjoys the variety offered throughout the day by working with so many musical groups.
“I like different parts of each of them,” he said. “Sometimes students joke that I like orchestra better. It is sort of like the old comedy routine, ‘Mom likes you best.’ “This job is so encompassing of your life it is hard to find time for anything else,” he added. Some days I think about retiring, but I don’t know what I would do. I am entrenched in this.” Two of his students hope to become band directors and have taken honors classes and concert band

to learn a second instrument. Each will conduct a piece at the spring concert to get them used to that part of the music program. Oldham noted, however, that the goal of the music program at Ragsdale is not to make music majors of all the students, but to have a nice community of those with like interests. “It is different than sports, but similar,” he said. “For students to be successful in music, they must work together. The product they are putting out at any moment must match their peers. They must be aware of what others are thinking and feeling.” Oldham sees all types of personalities in his classes, from those who need the written music to do well to those who like to improvise. “Each is so different, but all offer something to the program,” he said. “I love this school. Jamestown is such an interesting community and the school is so diverse with students from different backgrounds and with different ideas. Every day here is interesting. I just want to keep doing the same thing at the same place.”
