Town learns of bicycle-pedestrian needs • Connectivity to local businesses, schools, West Main Street, other bike/ped routes. • Bike racks. • More emphasis on crosswalk safety. • Sidewalks on both sides of Main Street. • Remote in nature but still safe and away from traffic. • Bike lanes. • 25 mph speed limit, traffic circles. • Walkable/cycling = atmosphere, welcoming business, quality of life.
These are just a few of the wishes expressed by those who attended the April 25 open house presented by the Bicycle-Pedestrian Committee of Jamestown. Visitors had a chance to speak with members of Toole Design of Raleigh THAT is working with the Town to refine the wants and needs of citizens. The purpose is to propose ways Jamestown can better serve residents by identifying potential bicycle and pedestrian projects. Teacher gives students pleasure and purpose by creating quilts BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Naming inanimate objects is nothing new. Consider all the people who name their cars or homesteads. But Mike Gipp, vocational education teacher at Haynes-Inman Education Center, makes sure that each quilt he, volunteer Becky McGlothlin and his students create has a name. The latest quilt is named Illusions. A couple of others have been called Endless Possibilities and Resilience. The name of the quilt and school and the year it was made are embroidered on a patch, which is stitched to the back of the quilt. “The name is something that sort of matches the quilt,” Gipp explained. It’s about a feeling the quilt provides.”

In 1966, singer Norma Tanega had a hit with “Walking My Cat Named Dog.” Tanega used an oxymoron and said she always wanted a dog but when she got a cat, it seemed the right thing to do to name it “Dog.” A similar situation is in place at Jamestown Park Golf Course where there is a cat named Birdie. For you non-golfers, a birdie is a golf term meaning one under par. Brad Coleman, assistant to Ross Sanderlin, golf and recreation director, said Birdie “was excited to know that he will soon be a local celebrity,” but the 13-14-year-old pale orange and white kitty declined a person-to-cat interview. “Birdie made his first appearance around the golf course around 2008 or 2009. He was discovered by local golf legend Larry Boswell who used to work at the course. He first noticed Birdie under a bush one morning. When he approached Birdie, the cat bolted for the
woods,” Coleman said. “As days passed, Birdie started to come around more often and Larry started putting food out for him. Not long after that, Birdie made the cart barn his home.” Coleman added that Birdie works the night shift and looks after the carts. “He will sit on a cart and hang out, but as soon as that cart begins to move he wants no part of it. Sometimes he’ll run alongside the cart while it’s being driven. One might think at times he is part dog.” (Tanega, are you reading this?) SEE BIRDIE, PAGE 2

Eligibility rules are simple: Candidates are not required to be Jamestown citizens and nominations for posthumous awards will be considered. The contributions of all nominees must be directly related to the preservation, interpretation or research of Jamestown history. Selection will be based on significance, quality, leadership, impact, performance and dedication. Categories include Archeology, Education and Outreach, Lifetime Achievement, Heritage Interpretation, Research, Documentation/Survey Work, Activism/Advocacy, Structural Preservation/Restoration, Archival Activities, or other. Past recipients have included Jack Perdue, the Jamestown Veterans Committee, Mr. and Mrs. William G. Ragsdale Jr., Quentin (Wimpy) Hodgin, Jane Wade, Old Jamestown School Association and Richard Hay. Established by the Historic Jamestown Society in 2013, the Browning award honors well-known local historian and genealogist Mary Browning, who was also the first recipient of the award. She has used census records and the National Archives as well as research in the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College, local libraries and newspaper archives to compile her ever-expanding notes on the area. Browning has almost single-handedly undertaken the responsibility of documenting the town’s history in five books, multiple newspaper articles and video. As a professional genealogist, she also used her knowledge to help families research their roots. The Mary A. Browning Historic Preservation Award will be presented Sunday, May 22, at 3 p.m. at Shelter No. 5 Camp Ann at High Point City Lake Park. The public is invited to attend to learn some of Jamestown’s history and to become involved in the Historic Jamestown Society.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT funds for the project from the NCDOT last fall. The Town’s share is 10 percent of that amount. NCDOT engineers will be involved in the work of the committee and results will be compiled into a new Bicycle-Pedestrian Plan. The Town already has a Comprehensive Pedestrian Transportation Plan created in 2010. That plan called for “a pedestrian transportation system that is safe, welcoming and accessible. Greenway connectivity to neighboring Greensboro and High Point encourage walking for exercise and travel. Trail and sidewalk circuits connect downtown shops and stores with parks, rivers, community centers, medical facilities, residential areas, the elementary, middle and high school, Guilford Technical Community College and the YMCA.” It also envisioned major truck traffic using alternative routes around Jamestown, making walking safer. On April 25, attendees were asked to place dots on a board noting their top three
of six stated goals for bicycle and pedestrian travel. Safety was the No. 1 goal, followed by connectivity and community (people-oriented streets). A close fourth was accessibility for people of all ages and abilities. Those who attended had the opportunity to draw suggested pedestrian and bicycle routes on a map. Several people suggested the same routes. Town officials were pleased with the response and plan to have a display at Music in the Park May 6 at Wrenn Miller Park. Surveys will be available during the event. There will be other public open houses on the plan tentatively scheduled for May, June and July. The final plan is currently scheduled to be revealed in September or October. A survey is available at https://www. jamestown-nc.gov/pages/view/JamestownBikePedestrian. It will remain open until May 20.

BIRDIE CONTINUED FROM FRONT As the official course cat, Birdie works the night shift as security. There have been very little issue with rodents since Birdie has been on duty. He doesn’t bother the geese that plague the course, leaving their chasing up to Golf Maintenance Superintendent Jamie Claybrook’s Weimaraner. Some cats are naturally friendly, others very standoffish. Coleman said Birdie has gotten friendlier as he gets older but will keep his distance with strangers. “Some mornings he likes to sit at the entrance and greet golfers as they come in. Just don’t invade his personal space. “He goes out on the course late in the evenings sometimes, but as he has gotten
older he doesn’t typically venture off too far from the cart barn,” Coleman added. “He has good golf etiquette and knows to never interrupt play. Golfers who are here early in the mornings see him often.” Birdie is well taken care of by those who work at the course, taking him to the vet annually to get check-ups and shots. There is a Birdie Vet Fund jar in the golf shop for anyone to help pay for the visits. Everyone takes care of the cat’s food. “We all chip in. Our staff of retired part-time guys here at the course are the real softies though, they spoil him and always make sure he has food and treats,” Coleman said. Golfers love birdies and Birdie the kitty appears to love Jamestown Park Golf Course and his friends.

Although Gipp had never sewed anything in the past, four years ago when McGlothlin called him about helping the students make quilts he was open to the idea. “Becky has taught me what I needed to know and helps with each project,” Gipp said. “The kids enjoy it so much and I continue to hone my sewing skills. Now, I can’t not do it. “Students are 100 percent engaged in everything that is being done with a quilt. They help select the colors and designs for each quilt

and get to see it all come together.” Gipp has two high school students at a time in the classroom while sewing. He sews the quilts since his students are not able to handle the machine, but they are the ones who keep the machine going by continually hitting a switch that provides powder to it. Each time the switch is pressed it allows 90 seconds of sewing time before the machine cuts off. Students learn to focus and hit the switch to keep the machine in operation. “Some students have to be prompted several times to hit it,” Gipp said. “A few do it more quickly and one student rarely allows a second of down time before pressing the switch.”

Gipp says it takes approximately two months to complete a quilt depending on its size. Most are lap quilts, but some would fit a double bed and this year’s quilt was queen size. “We needed to make it that big to get the 3-D depth perception that was needed for its design,” Gipp said. When schools were closed during the pandemic, Gipp had to be creative with his lessons plans. With parental permission, he went to students’ homes to allow them to participate in making a quilt. That required taking the material, his sewing machine, extension cord and computer to video the activity. The videos were part of his lesson plans that were aired on the school’s campus pages so all the kids could see the progress being made. “During the 2020-2021 school year we made a second quilt,” Gipp said. “It was similar to the first one but slightly different. I called it a fraternal twin.” Quilts are usually made in the fall and auctioned at the school’s fall festival

with proceeds used for the school. When no festival was held due to Covid, a quilt was auctioned online, and the funds raised went toward Gipp’s classes. Because the latest Illusions quilt was so large it was not finished in time for this year’s fall festival. Gipp displayed a portion of the quilt and the winner was gracious to allow extra time for it to be completed. Gipp and McGlothlin have already begun to brainstorm about possibilities for next year’s quilt design. They have considered incorporating leftover fabric from past quilts. But the final design will be up to the students. “We let them vote on a couple of choices,” Gipp said. Gipp is really pleased with his new sewing and quilting skills, but says the classroom projects are not about him. “They are about the process and the students who have worked on them,” he said. “I am just lucky to get to be part of it.”

Hodgin is sponsoring a hole in honor of his friend Pete Thompson. Club members all work toward getting various sponsors and players. The tournament is a four-person Captain’s Choice with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. It is limited to the first 100 golfers. “If you do not have a team, we will try to put you on one,” Hodgin said. The cost to play is $150 but charitable donations beyond that will be gratefully accepted. Participation includes greens fee, cart rental, practice balls to use before play begins, Chick-fil-A breakfast and lunch, complimentary beverage cart offerings and one ball-drop ticket. Additional tickets may be purchased for $10 each. D.H. Griffin provides a lift, which is used to drop numbered balls onto the practice green. Tickets with numbers matching ones closet to the spike are winners. There is a cash prize of $10,000 for the first hole-inone on holes 8 and 17. Other prizes, for the longest drive and closest to the pin on selected holes are possible. Team prizes are divided among the team’s members. In 12-inch skillet, heat 1-inch water to boiling on high. Add broccoli florets; cook 3 minutes or until tender. Drain; sprinkle with salt. 2. In skillet, melt butter on medium.
