Virus takes toll on golf course
By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com
While other courses in the area, including Grandover, Sedgefield, Oak Hollow and Blair Park remain open – although several are experiencing limited hours – Jamestown Park Golf Course closed March 27 due to COVID-19. As a result, revenue was down approximately 9.6 percent in March 2020 compared to March 2019. However, expenditures
were up approximately 7 percent in March 2020 compared to the same month last year. The net operating costs for the golf course for March 2020 before capital outlay was a loss of $23,654 while net operating costs for March 2019 before capital outlay was a loss of $11,934. Golf rounds March 2020 were 646 compared to 1,979 in March 2019, a decrease of approximately 200 percent. Grill operations showed a net loss of $392 compared
to a profit of $215 in March 2019. Year-to-date figures, however, show some positive numbers for the course. There was an increase of 4.85 percent in revenue within the fiscal year 20192020, or a profit of $25,976 over fiscal year 2018-2019. Clubhouse rentals were also up year-to-date, showing a 17.43 percent increase. Rounds of golf played during the 2019-2020 fiscal year were 15,955 compared to 16,143 the previous fiscal year, down only 188 rounds.
On the whole, the course has experienced revenue on the plus side for greens fees, $291,114 compared to $275,853, an increase of 5.53 percent, as well as cart rentals, $147,000 compared to $136,458, an increase of 7.73 percent. The fortunes of the Jamestown Park Golf Course should change later this week. The Town of Jamestown announced on May 1 that the course will re-open May 8 and tee times could be scheduled by phone or online beginning May 4.

Woman’s Club helps children and families in need By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com “Feeding our community has been our focus,” said Cathy Hicks, treasurer of the Woman’s Club of Southwest Guilford. Hicks and several other members of the organization dropped by Southern Roots in Jamestown recently to give owner Lisa Hawley a check for her non-profit, Feeding Lisa’s Kids. It is the third year WCSWG has donated funds to the cause. “She is right in our community, feeding children that live in our community,” said Melissa Moore, the woman’s club president. “She is doing good work and we appreciate what she does.” Hawley began providing food to children after she noticed some of them wrapping part of their school

It certainly was not the kind of celebratory ending to their secondary education that Ragsdale seniors expected when they began their final year of high school last fall. But nevertheless, seniors were treated to an informal recognition of the completion of high school as they drove through the circle in front of the school April 29. Speed bumps and crosswalks were painted to add flair to the event. Teachers and administrators greeted students with balloons, posters, noisemakers and plenty of well wishes as they received their coveted royal-blue graduation cap and gown. “We tried to make the occasion as festive as we could while wearing face masks and gloves,” said Ragsdale Principal James Gibson. “The kids stayed in their cars and we took pictures of each one.” A large decorated Styrofoam frame provided the perfect border to highlight each photo. Some seniors even took time to don their caps for the picture. Gibson estimated that approximately 200 cars representing two-thirds of the class came through during the three-hour event. “Some kids came Submitted photos by themselves, some Passing out caps and gowns to seniors in their cars could not equate to a graduwere with parents and ation ceremony, but it was recognition for all the hard work seniors have done some had more than to complete their high school education. Feeding Lisa’s Kids collects monetary donations that Hawley uses to purchase as much food as possible through her restaurant vendors. With the help of volunteers, it is packed and distributed to those in need. “I would like to try doing this every two weeks,” Hawley said. “As long as the sun rises, I will be feeding kids.” Two days later, members of the Woman’s Club of Southwest Guilford showed up in the parking lot of BackPack Beginnings on Alliance Drive in Greensboro. They presented another large check to that group, along with food from an April food drive. SEE CLUB, PAGe 2

funded the building in its entirety. Carr made a fortune in tobacco and textiles. In politics he actively championed “the cause of white supremacy.” Other campus buildings are named for important university figures who were also slaveholders or white supremacists. Joseph Gregoire de Roulhac Hamilton chaired the history department from 1908 until 1930. Hamilton Hall is named for him. He was “an avowed white supremacist” and defended “Ku Klux Klan violence and Jim Crow segregation.” Hamilton energetically collected family and business records all over the South. These papers became the foundation of the Southern Historical Collection housed at the university’s library. Interestingly, some of the book’s most important information was available only because of Hamilton’s efforts. His records are “the primary sources that a younger generation of historians would use to challenge and eventually discredit the work of Hamilton and other Confederate apologists.” “A to Z” drips with the irony that some of the university’s most progressive strengths are built on foundations of the contributions of slaveholders and white supremacists. “A to Z” is a book, not just for Carolina loyalists, but also for everyone who wants to understand the complex mix of attributes of our first state university.

GCS hits milestone in COVID-19 response Guilford County Schools has hit a milestone in its COVID-19 response. As of this week, the district has served 1,032,677 meals since schools were closed on March 14. The district averages between 33,500 and 34,000 meals served per day at more than 100 school and neighborhood sites. May 1 was School Lunch Hero Day, and the GCS staff joins the community in saying thank you to school nutrition workers for keeping students healthy and full during the school closure.
Since the closure began, GCS has distributed 15,835 devices for online learning. Families who have not received a device should contact their child’s school. As of last week, 95 percent of the district’s student population, or 69,039 unique students, have logged in to Canvas since the start of online learning. About 85 percent of the student population remains actively engaged. Remote learning will continue through the end of the school year.

continued from front The mission of BackPack Beginnings is to provide services that feed, comfort and clothe children in need. To round out its spring giving, WCSWG also donated funds to Family Service of the Piedmont. Of course, the ability to help others comes through lots of effort on the part of club members. “Our women are very service oriented,” Laura Gulledge, chairperson of the group’s fall and spring flower sales, said. “Many do not enjoy selling, but they know this helps the community. “Our flower sales have grown each year. People get used to the quality and realize their purchase provides a donation that goes back to the community. We have lots of repeat customers.” A&A Plants from Browns Summit supplies the plants used in the sale. In the fall, WCSWG members offer a variety of pansies and in the spring they have annuals, including geraniums and a variety of flowers in flats and baskets. “We are so thankful we were able to complete our spring sale,”

Club members presented a donation of money and food to BackPack Beginnings. From left are Melissa Moore, president, Parker White, BackPack Beginnings founder and executive director, and Lynn Harmon, club hospitality chair and BPB volunteer. (Not pictured was Katie Dale, club treasurer-elect.) Gulledge said. “When all the cancelations happened because of the virus, we moved the distribution up three weeks. We set up in a neighborhood in Jamesford Meadows and people just pulled up in their cars to get their plants.” The local club is part of the North Carolina Fed-
eration of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Since it began in 2013, members have tunneled more than $20,000 back to the community. In addition to monetary donations to non-profits, members also participate in many hands-on service projects.

Breakfast in bed will make Mom’s Day By donna erickson Donna's Day: Creative Family Fun
It’s morning. You’ve opened the newspaper, or you are reading it online. Wouldn’t a fluffy, crisp waffle taste good right now? Keep that thought, and now think about Mother’s Day, coming up on Sunday, May 10. Mom would no doubt be delighted with breakfast-in-bed waffles smothered with her favorite toppings. Dollops of whipped cream and strawberries on top, or real maple syrup flooding the plate. I could go for that! Here are two ways to celebrate Mom with delicious waffles and more on her plate.
or pop in your toaster and top with her favorites. For a creative presentation on Mom’s breakfast plate, use clean scissors to cut three toaster waffles into letters to spell “MOM” before you bake them. For the “M,” make an M letter template with an index card to fit the size of one waffle. Set on top of the waffle and snip into shape with the scissors. Your child will discover that the little square pocket designs (like a honeycomb) are a handy guide. For the “O,” do the same, or if you are using a round toaster waffle, simply cut out and remove an inner circle shape 1/2 inch from the outside edge. After completing the letters, place on a baking tray and bake in toaster or regular oven. Set the plate on a tray with a beverage, a flower and a homemade Mother’s Day card created by the kids. (You may wish to use the empty “O” space to fill with berries or a small pitcher of warm syrup).
BREAKFAST IN BED If your children aren’t old enough to make homemade waffles for Mom’s special day, just pick up good frozen waffles. Hopefully you’ll be able to find organic frozen toaster waffles in boxes for a variety FAMILY WAFFLE BAR of tastes and dietary requirements, If Mother’s Day brunch with famincluding gluten free and grain free, in the freezer section of your grocery ily is more your style, plan a casual store. Simply heat them in the oven, and scrumptious waffle bar mid-
morning. Set up a stack of plates and silverware at one end of your kitchen counter or buffet where the waffles from your favorite recipe come out of the waffle iron, steaming hot and delicious. Family members can add their favorite toppings and sides. Here are some ideas for toppings and sides: — melted butter — pure maple syrup, warm — fresh blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and cut up seasonal fruit — whipped cream — lemon curd — granola — peanut butter — Nutella — cooked bacon and sausage.
