GWEN program stepped up with series at HPU After successfully hosting GWEN programs at Guilford Technical Community College, the Housing Authority of the City of High Point, the YWCA of High Point and YMCA in Jamestown in 2018, Women in Motion is prepared to take the program a step higher.

“In the past, meetings have been in controlled settings and the venue has helped recruit participants,” said Sherri Scott, co-chair of the Women in Motion governance committee and director of donor services and administration of the High Point Community Foundation. “This time we wanted to make sure the program was very inclusive and attracted women at different levels of their

careers and personal lives.” GWEN stands for Gathering Women for Education and Nurturing. The name also honors the late Gwen Brayton whose family established Women in Motion to help women enhance their professional and personal lifestyle skills. “We believe when we help women we help whole Submitted photos families,” said Lisa Bray- Presenters of the GWEN program series at High Point University include, left to right, Michelle Cole, MA, and Lisa Lopez, MPA, co-owners of Development by see GWEN, page 3 Design Consulting Co., and Sylvia Burgess, PhD, owner of One Step At a Time.

Mayor enjoys making miniatures By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com They’re everywhere – in the office, in the conference room, hallway and even the lamps in the guest bedroom. Most are so small that you might not even notice if you stepped on part of one. And unless you had high-powered magnifiers on, you might never find a piece you dropped. We’re talking miniatures. Not miniature horses or dogs, but miniature scenes and houses so lifelike you feel you could walk right up to

the market stall hot dog stand and grab a wiener. But it is only about 1/2” long. A miniature is defined as a replica of something on a much smaller scale than normal. A perfect example is the familiar dollhouse little girls enjoyed. That’s what got Jamestown Mayor Lynn Montgomery interested in the hobby that has consumed her. “I was fascinated with small things many, many years before I actually did miniatures,” Montgomery said. “It started in the first grade. When the sixth grade, studying civics, created a city of cardboard boxes lit from the inside, we walked into that

room and there was this whole town. It was absolutely fascinating. That’s the first time it was, like, ‘Wow!’” In college she created scale-model projects for class. “My first degree is in design, but by age 30 I went into a miniature shop and got involved in building scale models that were more accurate.” She now estimates she has made hundreds of miniature creations. Add to that, if she does a building, there are often multiple rooms to design. But more of Montgomery’s work consists of single rooms, scenes and even something that could be described as a booth, like at a carnival. Like model trains, miniatures can be made in several different scales, Montgomery likes the ¼-inch scale but said 1-inch is easier. The smaller size, however, obviously takes up less space. She admitted the smallest thing she has made was 1/44inch scale that is a spool of thread with two rooms in it. That makes it the size of a dollhouse within a dollhouse. “You spend a lot of time sitting back, looking at it, and thinking,” she said. She declined to say what was the most she paid for an item, but research shows pieces can range from $2 to $2,400 each. Some items come in kits or are already painted, but Montgomery does a lot of the painting herself. She uses a lot of beads of various sizes in her creations. “Technology has really been a friend to us,” she said. “Laser printsee Mayor, page 10

With approval by commissioners, Gateway slated for repairs By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Call it skepticism. Call it cautiously optimistic. Whatever you call it, former Gateway principal Dale Metz and former teacher Lori Buck are looking at possible repairs to Gateway Education Center with a wait-and-see attitude. At the Guilford County Schools Board of Education budget meeting April 17, Superintendent Sharon Contreras had intended to recommend Gateway be closed and students be dispersed among other schools in the county that serve students with special needs, including Haynes-Inman and CJ Greene education centers in Jamestown. Gateway was built in 1983 for students with physical and intellectual disabilities. The school also houses four infant/toddler classrooms that are supported by the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Association. Contreras sited concerns about the facility’s disrepair and the affect the school’s air quality could have on medically fragile students as the reason for closing it. Parents of Gateway students were notified by phone April 12-13 that the school would close at the end of the school year. Parents and other supporters of the school showed up in mass at the budget meeting. Many carried signs asking that the school be fixed so the special needs of this student population could continue to be addressed in the most effective manner. The future of the school was left in the hands of the County Commissioners, who had reserved school bond money at their dis-

posal. Contreras has hoped that money would be used to fund six career and technology academies across the county. Commissioners tossed the responsibility of how the money would be used back to the School Board. At its regular meeting on April 30, the board voted 7-2 to reallocate $1.89 million to replace the roof and repair windows and gutters at Gateway. Member Byron Gladden noted that Gateway would not close but get the needed repairs with the commissioners’ approval. The above is simply a condensed version of the situation. It does not take into account the stress of parents fighting to save the very school they feel has contributed to improvements in their children with special needs, or the stories by the crowd of Gateway supporters who pleaded to keep the school open. So, it appears the ball has once more been thrown into the court of the commissioners and many – like Metz and Buck – are waiting to see the outcome. “If they are going to follow through, I hope it will be this summer,” said Metz, a Jamestown resident who served as Gateway’s principal for 21 years. “That would be wonderful. But until repairs are underway, I am a little skeptical. “Had things been done all along we would not be here now. I understand priorities, but it should not have been left to go this long. I am grateful it seems that repairs are going to proceed. I will be watching.” Metz said he was blown away by the size of the crowd at the school board see Gateway, page 3

Women in Motion presents first annual grant BY NORMA B. DeNNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com April 30 was an exciting date in the history of Women in Motion of High Point. The first annual grant given by the organization was presented during a membership meeting that evening. Family Service of the Piedmont received $21,500 to help support the SELFStart Program: Survivor Empowerment Leading to Financial Stability, for victims of domestic abuse or human trafficking. “We appreciate the confidence shown to us and promise to be good stewards of the funds,” said Tom Campbell, president and CEO of Family Service. Any non-profit or charitable organization that serves women could apply for the grant, but the group must have a track

record of successfully serving women in the community for at least one year. “When considering applications, we wanted to be sure the funds were not being used for a duplicate program already established,” explained Sherri Scott, cochair of the Women in Motion governance committee and director of donor services and administration of the High Point Community Foundation. “It would be good, but not mandatory, if the program included more than one of our group’s main focuses (education/training, mentoring, networking, resources and wellness), and it was important that we could track the impact of the program to a measureable outcome. Mostly, it needed to be inclusive for all women. That was the hard part.” Unique to Women in Motion is the fact See WOMeN, PAgE 10

Guilty or not guilty? James Romulus Saunders Chipman, was one of three children of Luzene Chipman, a Quaker and later a Methodist preacher, and Joel Chipman, a well to do and successful farmer in the Deep River community of Guilford County, North Carolina. In 1852, Chipman was an honor graduate of Oak Ridge Institute, in Oak Ridge, North Carolina. He also atended Trinity College (present-day Duke University) before beginning the study of medicine. At the time of the murder, Rom, as he was known, was reading medicine with Dr. Shubal Coffin of Jamestown, North Carolina. Chipman may have also been boarding in Dr. Coffin’s home. In 1856, Chipman was convicted of the murder of Martha Pennix. The surname is sometimes spelled Pinix. Pinix is the spelling on the grave marker for Martha Pinix. Pennix was a young lady working in

the Chipman home. Pennix left the Chipman family in about March of 1856 to work for Erasmus Stewart. Pennix probably went missing on Saturday, October 18, 1856. Her body wasn’t found until the following Monday. The body was discovered lying in woods between her last known location, possibly the Stewart home and where ever her intended destination was. Her throat had been cut and she had received a shotgun blast to her head. The autopsy revealed that Pennix was six months pregnant at the time of her death. Chipman’s roommate reported that Chipman had received a letter from Pennix the day before the murder. In her letter Pen-

nix supposedly stated that she had information that could disgrace Chipman. What the information was has never been determined. Chipman borrowed a horse from Coffin and rode off with a shotgun. Chipman returned to Jamestown, North Carolina about three hours later. Based on this and other circumstantial evidence, Chipman was arrested for the murder of Pennix. At Chipman’s trial, the jury took about an hour to find Chipman guilty of the murder. He was sentenced to death. The sentence was to be carried out on May 15, 1856. Chipman’s lawyer filed an appeal. While awaiting the outcome of the appeal, Chipman managed to escaped on horseback. He escaped to Mexico where he became a successful entrepreneur. He changed his name to Santiago Saunders. He combined the common Spanish name for Saint James, Santiago. He also used the Spanish custom of taking the surname of the mother. Saunders was the surname of his paternal

grandmother. Saunders married a Mexican Catholic woman. All of their children were raised in the Catholic church. As far as it’s known, Saunders never returned to the United States, however, he sent all of his children to the United States to be educated. Seven years after the murder, Paris C. Stewart, a cousin to Chipman, told his brother. Temple, that he had killed Pennix. He stated that he had promised to marry her, but changed his mind. He further stated that he never intended to kill her. According to his affidavit, he stated “Temple, I am the boy that killed Martha Pinnix.” “Romulus did not do it. He is as clear of it as you are.” Unfortunately, Paris Stewart was killed shortly after making the confession to his brother. It would be another ten years before the Chipman family would finally hear about the confession. In 1877, affidavits were sent to Governor Zebulon B. Vance regarding the confession. Vance granted a pardon to Chipman. This created nearly as much sensation as the original murder conviction. Martha Penix is buried at the Sandy Ridge Methodist church. At one time there wasn’t a stone to commemorate her burial, however a stone has since been placed on her grave.

ton, Gwen’s daughter. She is a member of the Women in Motion leadership committee and chair of the GWEN program. “Women are the nurturers of the family.” The next GWEN program is scheduled for May 14, 21 and 28 at the Webb Conference Center on the campus of High Point University. “We want all women to feel welcome and included,” Scott said. “Anyone who wants to improve her life may attend.” Each class builds on the previous one, but participants can obtain helpful information from any of the classes. On May 14, Michelle Cole and Lisa Lopez will conduct a program called “Goal Setting to Advance in Life and Career.” The two women own and operate Development by Design Consulting Company. They also will conduct the meeting “Goal Achieved” on May 21. Sylvia Burgess of One Step at a Time will end the series May 28 with the program “Resiliency When Your Goals Are Challenged.” A light snack will be provided at each meeting. Research conducted by Gramercy Research Group of Winston-Salem showed education and mentoring were two things, among several, that women felt could be most helpful to their success. Considering input from a variety of women, Women in Motion is focusing on five areas – education/training, mentoring, grant-making, resources, wellness and networking. “All our programs and events are centered around these,” Scott said. “We are building a network of facilitators to offer new curriculum each year. All the programs are a source of networking.” To register for the upcoming GWEN classes go to https://www.womeninmotionhp.org/gwen/. meeting and the extent of their knowledge and caring. The group not only included parents of current students, but former parents and staff and a couple of former students. Some parents whose children attended Gateway but have since passed away spoke of the improved quality of life the school had provided their children. “The whole idea of Gateway was to give students with special needs a school of their own that would meet their occupational, speech and physical requirements,” Metz said. “A fulltime nurse would be on site and parents could get medical counseling. “That is why we have been so successful – all the services available in one place. Some people have moved from other states to attend this school. It has to be doing something right and it needs to continue.” Buck, who taught at Gateway for 25 years and retired from a position at Haynes-Inman Education Center, remains unsure of the outcome for Gateway. “The school had a leaky roof and windows when I was there,” Buck said. “Guilford County has let us down. “Gateway scored higher than some other schools (on its facility assessment), but parents from that school were the only ones who got last-minute calls about their school closing.” Buck explained that the recent school board meeting was four and a half hours long and entailed much back-and-forth discussion. “But the whole time parents and other supporters were speaking, Superintendent Contreras never once looked at us. I also know that some of the Gateway staff has been threatened with their jobs if they talk with the media. I have heard that parents will still be offered the opportunity to stay at Gateway or transfer. I am afraid they will try to get parents to transfer their students so the school will look empty.” Buck says there are well over 100 kids that would need to transfer if the school closes. Also, five pre-school classes at

Gateway education Center Haynes-Inman would have to go elsewhere to make room for Gateway students. Supplemental staff, such as cafeteria workers and custodians, would be affected by the closing as well. “Closing Gateway will impact everybody in the county,” Buck said. “I think that is not being addressed.” Buck has seen some Gateway students go to other schools and come back because the teachers were not able to deal with their special needs. “But we also have seen how well everything works when they receive therapy every day and families get the support they need,” she said. Haynes-Inman was built so students with special needs on the west side of the county would not have such long bus rides. Closing Gateway could add the same issue of long bus rides to students in Eastern Guilford County. Buck has heard rumors that someone is looking at the land on which Gateway sets. She also has heard whispers about doing away with special schools. “When she first came here, the superintendent told me that were she came from they did not have separate schools for students with special needs,” Buck said. “I thought, ‘Oh no, she is not receptive to us.’ “I am afraid that kids with special needs could be put into basement classrooms as they once were and never seen again

– tucked away from everyone with no interaction or therapy. I feel like we are going backwards. “Some parents are relived by what they heard at the school board meeting, but some are still very nervous.” Metz appreciates all the community support Gateway has received. “I hope that people will continue to support it and all other self-contained schools for students with special needs,” he said. Buck plans to attend the County Commissioners meeting on May 16. For now, the situation at Gateway remains a waiting game.

Other schools need updates to their facilities Another example of Guilford County schools that need repairs or updating is Page High School. During the recent GCS School Board meeting, parents whose students attend Page also addressed facility problems at that school. The small cafeteria makes it impossible for all students to go through the line to buy food during their allotted lunch period. Students who bring their lunch from home often eat it while sitting in a hallway, or outside at picnic tables even if the weather is cold.

The greatest show on earth BY RICH LOWRY No one enjoys getting impeached, and if it happens to him, Donald J. Trump will be no exception. On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine any potential target of impeachment in Anglo-American history relishing the fight more than Trump. He’d rather be done with the Mueller investigation in all its permutations, but there’s no one better suited to being at the center of a harshly partisan, deeply personal political and legal donnybrook that will ultimately be just for show. Trump famously told top aides at the beginning of his administration that he wanted them to view each day as a TV episode. Impeachment would be a helluva season, matching a momentous process of American government with low political melodrama. This may feel like a devolution from the buttoned-up Mueller probe, but the House should have been the locus of the Trump investigation in the first place. Because Justice Department policy says a president can’t be indicted, Robert Mueller was never going to reach a legal conclusion about alleged obstruction. The question was whether the president’s conduct constituted an abuse of power that Congress would deem impeachable; in other words, it was a political question. Congress, then, was always the most appropriate venue for the investigation and disposition of this matter, not the office of the special counsel, where instead of being out in the open, it was behind closed doors. Instead of being nakedly political, it was clothed in thick legal analysis. Instead of being a struggle between the branches, it was a struggle within the executive branch. Now, the battle is truly joined. The body

that is going to make the ultimate decision of what to do about Trump’s conduct, if anything, is on the hook. It has to decide what goes too far and not far enough. Should it subpoena Trump’s children? How much time should it devote to investigations as opposed to its policy agenda? And, of course, should it impeach? For his part, Trump is liberated to fight like a caged animal, asserting executive prerogatives vis-a-vis the legislature and engaging in flat-out partisan combat. Trump would prefer a world in which he’s universally praised, but short of that, this is his element. He’s handled every controversy or fight — no matter how personal or treacherous — with the same straight-ahead aggression. Trump is almost certainly better prepared and temperamentally suited for thermonuclear war with a Democratic House than he was to get substantive achievements out of a Republican House. He obviously hadn’t thought through an actionable populist-conservative policy synthesis, but he has a lifetime’s experience resisting and belittling enemies and extemporizing his way from one crisis to the next. It may be impossible for him to stop impeachment, certainly not if Nancy Pelosi supports it. But he’ll be the focus of a historic drama that will rate — or at least be remembered and analyzed — for a very long time. He will have succeeded in making the Democratic House majority all about him, and, if not getting convicted by the Senate counts as a victory, he will win in the end. The post-trial tweetstorm will be something to behold. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. ©2019 by King Features Synd., Inc.

Therapy dog flunks training test BY SAM MAZZOTTA PAW’S CoRNER DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My friend’s Golden Retriever, “Janey,” was training to be a therapy dog, but flunked an important test and needs more training to qualify. What does she mean? I wasn’t aware that emotional support dogs needed extra training — they’re not service dogs. — Barron L., Birmingham, Alabama DEAR BARRON: It’s true that no training or certification is needed for an owner to declare their pet a companion or emotional support pet. However, the growing need for therapy dogs who provide temporary emotional support to humans going through a crisis or an emotionally difficult time has led to calls for more standardized training in these roles. The American Kennel Club is perhaps the most prominent organization to approve therapy dog certification organizations under specific criteria. Therapy dogs frequently visit hospitals, nursing homes, classrooms, shelters

and even courtrooms to provide comfort to people of all ages. Because of their unique role in working with many different people over the course of a day, these dogs need to be even-tempered and well-socialized, and respond instantly to commands from their handler. Handlers need to pass a background check, because the pair will be working with vulnerable populations. Some certification groups such as the Alliance of Therapy Dogs will test and observe a potential therapy animal. Their instructor/observer will give the owner advice and guidance during this process. If the dog needs more training or doesn’t have the right temperament, then it won’t be recommended for certification. It sounds like Janey has the right temperament but needs more behavioral training. I hope her owner goes forward with it, because the world could use more of these wonderful dogs. Lynn Montgomery, center, in her home workshop with friends and co-miniaturists, l-r, Sandi Coble and Jean Monk. ers, 3-D printers, laser cutters can cut things out completely accurate in teenytiny scale.” She makes greatlyreduced photocopies of labels, patterns and photographs to the proper size needed for miniature wine bottles, wallpaper and family photos. And if you look closely, you’ll see some type of animal in each scene. Montgomery’s workshop is in her basement and is packed with drawers of dif-

ferent objects and tools of her craft, like very, very small lights that can be used as candles or lamps or to create the look of outdoors. She buys items from model train stores or trades with other miniaturists but has also found everyday items useful in her hobby. Caps off medicine bottles can be farmer’s sinks, planters, stools, steps or troughs. Dish scrubbies can be pulled apart to make wisteria vines. Separated medicine capsules

can be wine glasses. Acorn caps become salad bowls. Toothbrush bristles become straws. Even those irritating plastic ties that hold tags to new clothing can be used in several ways, including tiny wine glasses. “There’s a lot of things you can create out of nothing,” Montgomery said. “It doesn’t end its life the way it started.” When it’s not tax season, Montgomery, a CPA, often travels to conventions where

she has chaired committees and participated in classes in techniques for making miniatures. At many of these conventions, participants all do the same project – but add their own touches. “While we start out with the same material, the projects become totally different, as you can imagine,” she said. The Hamilton-Turner House in Savannah is her favorite creation. It comprises 12 rooms and could take someone hours to look at it closely. It took Montgomery three years to finish and she admits to taking some artistic license as to colors. “I created everything in there and I can sit back and

look at it and enjoy different aspects of it. “It’s an illness.” Several of Montgomery’s miniatures were featured during the 2018 Candlelight Tour at Mendenhall Homeplace. The artist herself was on hand to discuss her work. “The children were the most fun. They would look at the Hamilton-Turner House and say, ‘Which room do you want to stay in?’ “Children are absolutely fascinated. They will look at and see the sleeping cat under the table, or the mouse. Adults don’t see as much detail. “I do what I like,” Montgomery said. “I never know

what’s going to hit me next. You have to have imagination and patience. “It’s a hobby. If I was doing it to make money, that’s one thing, but it’s a hobby. I do them for total enjoyment.” Montgomery is glad to talk to those interested in miniatures and also suggests investigating the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts, of which she is a member, at https://miniatures.org. October is International Dollhouse and Miniature Month and Montgomery plans to have an exhibit at the Jamestown Public Library, as she has done in the past.

Miniatures have been around for years Any picture of a Victorian home in England is certain to include a dollhouse, but they also have been found Egyptian tombs from nearly 5,000 years ago. Made of wood, carvings of boats, pets, furnishings, etc. were placed in the Pyramids and scholars speculate they were religious in nature. Most of the dollhouses we are familiar with could only be afforded by the wealthy and, often, children were not allowed to play with them. They were only for show – and to show off wealth and social status. According to the Financial Times, Albert V, duke of Bavaria in 1557, owned the earliest known dollhouse. Some German dollhouses were designed to teach young girls how to set up and maintain a proper home. In the 18th century, “baby houses” were constructed as exact miniatures of an existing house, again boasting of the owner’s wealth and social status. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that

children began to play with dollhouses and they became very popular when they were mass-produced in America after World War II. Scenes in war movies often depict strategists surround a large map with toy soldiers symbolizing troops. These toy soldiers, or miniatures, were once a staple of children. Most British houses had a hinged front that opened to reveal the rooms but in the United States, the backs are open to see inside. Miniatures, on the other hand, did not become popular until the 20th century and, while many are technically dollhouses, they are not meant to be used for play. They are a hobby now, not a symbol of wealth and social status. The High Point Museum has a display of 30 miniature scenes owned and created by Meredith Slane Michener. Promotional material states, “Dollhouses are made to be played with while miniature rooms are made for visual enjoyment.”

Cedarwood Garden Club awards for May

The Cedarwood Garden Club has selected the monthly garden awards for the month of May. The Yard of the Month is 107 Bramble Drive, the home of Carrie and Mark Vickner. The lovely rolling hills in the front yard along with the lush lawn make this a great choice. The property is “topped off” with a flag at the porch entrance. The Mailbox of the Month is awarded to Janice and Gary Snider, 121 Sagewood Rd. The purple irises and orange daisies make this rabbit feel right at home landscaped in a brick enclosure. Congratulations to our Cedarwood home owners.

its membership has the final vote for grant recipients. According to The Status of Women in Guilford County, N.C., as determined by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, women still face disproportionate challenges in our community across all demographics, including income, age and ethnicity. Women in Motion was established in 2017 with an endowment from the Paul Brayton family to help women achieve economic security and enable them to pursue their dreams and achieve their full potential. It serves women living in the High Point, Archdale, Thomasville, Trinity and Jamestown areas. Members of the group, which include both women and men, have the opportunity to experience the value of philanthropy, as well as nonprofit leadership. The membership fee is $100 annually. During the recent membership meeting, membership chair Myrna Wigley announced that the group has grown to more than 200 individuals and reminded those present to seek renewal of their membership in July. “This first grant, which we are celebrating tonight, would not have been happened without our donors and membership,” Wigley said. “As much as we have done, there is more to do,” she added. Leadership team member Virginia McDermott interviewed featured speaker Jennifer W. Martineau, who along with Portia R. Mount, authored the book Kick Some Glass. Martineau encouraged women to kick through the glass ceiling that is keeping them from becoming all they can be. “At least once a year, you should take stock to see where you are,” she said. “Revisit your purpose in life, where you want to be in five years and what you will do to get there. “We don’t demand enough of ourselves.” To learn more about Women in Motion of High Point or how to become a member, check the website www.hpcommunityfoundation.org/women-in-motion.
