Bike-pedestrian suggestions growing By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Although the Jamestown Bicycle-Pedestrian Steering Committee has held only two meetings, a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes. Toole Design of Raleigh is working with the committee to present ideas and receive community response and suggestions. In April, the group held an open house where participants could note not only where they think bicycle and pedestrian routes should exist, but also their top three goals.

There is an online survey on the Town’s website (https://survey.alchemer. com/s3/6833873/Jamestown-Open-House) that will stay open until June 10. The survey will be available at Music in the Park June 3. Toole took all the responses and presented them to the Steering Committee on May 19. Sarah Johnson, project designer with Toole, said the results indicate safety is the No. 1 concern. There are bottlenecks in Jamestown and crosswalks are not enough. Some crosswalks are blind, that is, cannot be seen until a motorist is upon them.

Aesthetics of the pathways is important because walking and cycling are social activities and the sport of cycling is growing. “You can’t go down Main Street or Guilford Road without seeing someone walking, running or biking,” said Josie Cothren, a committee member. Several problem areas are obvious — the railroad, cul-de-sacs and the High Point City Lake. Several roads used by cyclists like Oakdale, Harvey and Vickrey Chapel are narrow and hilly. The committee had the opportunity to create a vision for the future, using

four templates provided by Toole. They also set several goals: safety for walkers and cyclists, connectivity to destinations, accessibility for all ages and abilities, visibility of the network and community by having people-oriented streets. It was pointed out that there is no ordinance in the town allowing bicycles on sidewalks. Bicycles are to stay in the roadways. Toole offered several options for bicycle traffic, including buffered or separated bike lanes painted on the streets, sidepaths (similar to a sidewalk but for bikes) and more green-

Haworth wins Preservation Award By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com It came as no surprise that Shirley Haworth was selected as the winner of the 8th annual Mary A. Browning Historic Preservation Award. It was a well-deserved honor as Haworth has worked with the Historic Jamestown Society for many years, serving as board member and secretary several times and president five times. She also served on the Jamestown Library board for several years. “As a lifetime member of the Historic Jamestown Society, Shirley strongly believes in and supports the mission of HJS to preserve the invaluable history of our community,” said Sandra McGee in her nomination letter. “She works tirelessly to help citizens understand and appreciate the vibrant

human rights heritage that has been a foundation of our community, beginning with its early Quaker settlers who actively opposed slavery, promoted universal education and labored to create a life of peace and simplicity in the midst of troubled times. “Shirley takes great pride in working to make historic Jamestown and the Mendenhall Homeplace visible to others by donating her time, knowledge and material resources on many committees and projects.” “The award honors the many people around our extended area who make sure our rich history stayed alive and was available to be appreciated by people who visited us and for those of us Photo by Carol Brooks who were here to gain new shirley Haworth is the winner of the eighth annual insight as new research came Mary a. Charles Kuralt’s lover’s Montana land Would you be interested in a new privately published memoir by a Bozeman Montana lawyer, titled “Tilting at Montana’s Windmills for 50 Years”? No? But what if he were my law school classmate? Still, no? But what if I told you my classmate-author had been the lawyer for Charles Kuralt’s longtime extramarital lover in her effort, after Kuralt’s death, to secure a valuable tract of land in Montana that Kuralt had promised her before he died? Does that get you interested? Kuralt was beloved by people all over the country, but especially in his native North Carolina, for his human-interest stories on CBS TV’s On-the-Road and Sunday Morning programs. His warm, authoritative voice with perfectly pitched rhythms was irresistibly convincing. Kuralt was married for many years to his second wife, Petie, and they lived together in New York City. Only a few people knew about Kuralt’s dual life and his long-term friendship and financial support for Patricia Shannon. My Yale Law School classmate, Jim Goetz, is a hero in Montana for his work saving creeks and rivers. In his memoir, Goetz writes that Kuralt, “who fished in Montana, particularly in September,

By d.g. martin One on one purchased land located on the Big Hole River.” Kuralt and Shannon had planned for him to convey this property to her in the fall of 1997 when Kuralt would be in Montana to fish. Earlier, however, Kuralt became very ill, suffering from lupus. To reassure Shannon about his intention to convey the parcel of Montana land on which she was living Kuralt wrote the following: “June 18, 1997 Dear Pat - Something is terribly wrong with me and they can’t figure out what. After cat-scans and a variety of cardiograms, they agree it’s not lung cancer or heart trouble or blood clot. So they’re putting me in the hospital today to concentrate on infectious diseases. I am getting worse, barely able to get out of bed, but still have high hopes for recovery... if only I can get a diagnosis! Curiouser and curious-

against Goetz and Shannon. But after four appeals to the Montana Supreme Court, “the first in 1999, the fourth in 2003,” they won. Shannon was awarded the property. Goetz acknowledges, “Although we won, most estate lawyers I’ve talked to think the result was wrong. Nevertheless, the case is discussed routinely in many courses in law schools around the country, probably because of Charles Kuralt’s celebrity status.” Goetz does not have a high opinion of Kuralt. He writes, “My impression, by the way, is that Kuralt, although a very warm public personality, had a dark, depressive streak. Rumor was around Dillon [Montana] that he and Shannon were heavy drinkers.” Goetz is a good friend and is entitled to his opinion, but if he ever comes to visit, after I thank him for his fascinating book about lawyering for good causes in Montana, I will remind him that for me and most others in this state, Kuralt will always be one of North Carolina’s great heroes. D.G. Martin, a lawyer, served as UNC-System’s Vice President for Public Affairs and hosted PBSNC’s North Carolina Bookwatch.

Although it was clear from the handwritten letter that Kuralt intended to give the land to Shannon, Goetz writes that the sole issue is whether the language or the letter “is sufficient to establish Kuralt’s intent to devise that property to Shannon.” Goetz writes that most of the estate lawyers he talked to thought that the language was “well short” of what is required to constitute a valid will. Maintenance expenses for April 2022 were $65,208, compared to $59,813 the previous year. Putting greens were aerated early in May and are growing well. Several limbs and dead

trees around the course caused the department to rent a wood chipper. The mulch created is used to help condition soil on the course and help smooth out bumpy areas for golf carts. Irrigation leaks are in check with only seven leaks detected now. forward,” Haworth said at the previous ceremony. “The annual award is in recognition of people who worked to preserve and maintain the history, tradition and stories of this area.” Other nominees for the award were Gary Haynes for his work as architect of the renovation of the old Jamestown Public School into the Public Library, Elizabeth Greeson for her work with Oakdale Methodist Church, the late Alan Johnson for his work in saving the school for the library and Carol Brooks for her historical articles in the Jamestown News and her work with HJS. The award, given by the Historic Jamestown Society, honors Browning, a well-known local historian and genealogist. She has used census records and the National Archives as well as research in the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College, local libraries and newspaper archives to compile her ever-expanding notes on the area. “It’s been a pleasure to participate in this award program since it began,” Browning said last year. She was unable to attend this year’s award presentation. The award is presented in May, which is Preservation Month nationally. Prior to the award presentation, Shawn Rogers, director of the Mendenhall Homeplace, shared some history of Tilghman Vestal, grandson of the Homeplace’s original owner, Richard Mendenhall. During the Civil War, Quakers were allowed to pay a fee of $500 to avoid serving in the Confederacy during forced conscription. Many Quakers took advantage of this option, but not Vestal, who said his money would go to purchasing arms and munitions for the soldiers, contrary to Quaker beliefs. He refused to pay and was conscripted into the Confederate army. Refusing to fight, even with guns tied to his hands, Vestal was sent to the Salisbury prison where things became really bad for him. He was punished to the extent of being strung up by his thumbs, stuck with bayonets, beaten and kept in unsanitary conditions. “They used him as an example to deter other people from taking the same track he had,” Rogers said. Family members sent letters to people like Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, lobbying for Vestal’s release. They even offered to pay the $500 exemption fee but Vestal refused to have it paid on his behalf. His aunts, Judith and Delfina Mendenhall managed to find alternate service for their nephew and Vestal finally was granted release from the army, thanks to the efforts of his aunts and other Quakers.

CONtINUeD FrOM FrONt tains and other Triad Honor Flight volunteer staff. It costs $125,000 to put each flight together. Veterans fly for free and each receives a special shirt, jacket and hat. Donations from business sponsors, organizations and individuals help cover expenses for the veterans. All other participants on the flight pay $600. Darrell Freeman of Jamestown flew on the April 27 Honor Flight to Washington. Although Freeman, an Army veteran, had not considered going on such a flight, he was familiar with them. His wife Deana had served as a guardian for three WWII veterans 11 years ago. Local flights had stopped for a while, but when they continued Deana enrolled her husband for a trip. “It was special to have my daughter Kim serve as my guardian,” Freeman said. “I went to Vietnam in 1968 when my wife was seven months pregnant. I did not get to see her until she was 10 months old, and now 54 years later she was able to go with me on this trip.” The Triad Honor Flight leaves the Piedmont Triad International airport early in the morning and returns later that night. Once in Washington, participants board luxury buses with a bus captain and tour guide. A police escort takes them from one memorial to another. Included in the tour are the Iwo Jima Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, as well as the Air Force, WWII, Korean and Vietnam memorials. “Our group had the unique opportunity to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery,” Freeman said. “Not everyone gets to do that.” The beginning The Honor Flight program began shortly after the National World War II Memorial opened in 2004. Earl Morse, a retired Air Force Captain working as a physician assistant in Springfield, Ohio, heard patients who served during that era talking about the memorial. He knew many would never see it due to their age, health conditions or finances. In 2005, Morse used his own plane to fly several veterans to see the memorial. He soon recruited 11 other pilots to do the same and the Honor Flight program began. By 2006, a waiting list of veterans wishing to make the trip was so long the organization began using commercial airlines. “In our area, Rotary Club District 7690 helped sponsor

veterans and between 2009 and 2011, 1,300 Triad-based WWII veterans were able to participate in the trip,” said Jackie Kohler, vice president of the board for the Triad Honor Flight. “Due to a lack of volunteers, no local flights were made for several years.” Local Honor Flight revived In 2019, Alison Huber met her dad who had flown with her brother on an Honor Flight from Ohio to the nation’s capital. She was so moved by the events of the day she came back to the Triad ready to start a local organization once more. After contacting the National Flight Network, volunteers spent months working toward that goal and in 2020 the group got its 501(c)(3) status and was sanctioned as one of 130 Honor Flight hubs in the United States. Huber now serves as executive director for the local hub. The newly formed Triad Honor Flight flew its first mission to Washington on Nov. 11, 2021. The second flight was made in April of this year and one is scheduled for Oct. 12. Trips from this area are made in one day, while those from other parts of the country may take as much as three days. The program is managed by an all-volunteer staff. Kohler, perhaps more than some, understands what it means to give back to those who have faithfully served in the military because she has seen it from both sides. She served for four years as a military police officer in the Army. Her mother, father, brothers and husband were in various branches of the military. Both her sons are 100 percent retired on medical disability from wounds sustained in combat and a grandson is on active duty in the coast guard. “It is important to give back in any way we can to those who have given so much for us,” she said. “Volunteering with the Honor Flight is my way of giving back.” Any veteran over age 65 may apply online to go on a Triad Honor Flight. Veterans are selected according to age, starting with the oldest until the plane is filled. Veterans in line move to a spreadsheet for the next flight. Sometimes younger veterans serve as guardians for older ones. Lewis Pleasants of Boonville took his first flight 11 years ago as a guardian for three WWII veterans. In November of last year he returned to Washington on an Honor Flight as a veteran and in April went again

Mail Call on the flight home was especially meaningful to Freeman. as a bus captain. Pleasants, who served in the Navy and Marines, calls the Honor Flights a bucket-list item. “It is the trip of a lifetime, a wonderful experience,” he said. “I would like to go back again. I was impressed with how well organized the trips are.” Mail Call One aspect of the trip that was especially meaningful was the mail call held on the plane after leaving Washington. All veterans received a packet filled with letters, notes and cards from “back home.” “When I was in the service, mail call was always a special part of the day,” Freeman said. “We did not have cell phones and Internet to use for communication. But Deana wrote to me most every day.” Before the trip, guardians notified friends and relatives and requested they write

something to the veteran that could be read on the way home. Drawings and messages from school children were also included. Welcome Home For Pleasants and Freeman, both Vietnam veterans, one of the best things about the trip was the wonderful reception they received upon coming home from the flight. When the group disembarked at the Greensboro airport, they were placed in line in order of age. As they started a processional to the front of the building they could hear cheering and see small flags being waved to welcome them. “It was wonderful to see the sincerity of the community as they gathered there to honor those who have served our country,” Pleasants said. “When we returned from Vietnam we were not welcomed very

nicely. The honor flight has been a healing experience for me.” “I got emotional seeing all that,” Freeman noted. “It was overwhelming. This welcome home made up for all those years. It gave me a sense of pride to realize that people do care. The entire Honor Flight was a Crown Jewel. It was an honor and privilege to be part of it.” Guardians speak out “I can’t say enough for the way each of the veterans were treated with dignity, respect and honor during the entire trip,” Kim Freeman said. “Ordinary men and women were made to feel extraordinary by all the support provided by the Triad Honor Flight.” “I served as a guardian as a tribute to my dad who passed away in August of 2021,” said Jerry Brett. “He served in Korea for two years.”

Brett was guardian for two veterans on the April flight – Ross Winchester, who served in Korea and Winchester’s friend Steve Rockwood, a Vietnam veteran. “I was especially impressed at the tribute the veterans got,” Brett said. “People were clapping and cheering at both ends of the flight. When they arrived back home, I imagine there were about 2,000 people waiting to greet them. As Ross was walking down the line a little girl gave him a long-stemmed rose and he bent down to thank her.” Brett noted it was especially touching to see the Vietnam guys receive a hero’s welcome that they did not get after the war. “It was a good day to be an American,” he added.
