Students’ Covid project displayed at H.P. Museum By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com There is no doubt the Covid-19 pandemic touched the lives of young and old alike. That is why Jamie Shields, a fourth grade teacher at Millis Road Elementary School wanted to give her students an opportunity to express themselves about the changes they experienced during the upheaval of school closings. “Looking around at my students, I was interested in hearing their perspective of the situation,” Shields said. “I wanted to give them time to reflect on what has been going on and to voice their feelings about it. “I taught these students in third grade and moved up to fourth grade with them. I was with them when school closed in the spring of 2020 and when it opened in the spring of 2021. I cannot believe how well all of them handled this.” Shields started a project in March after students returned to in-person learning. She shared with them pictures of children
during the polio era listening to their lessons on the radio. As today’s students were learning a bit of history, they realized they also had been making it. Shields had students write narratives of their experience and take pictures that represented their lives during the pandemic. Art teacher Tammy Larrick had the students draw self-portraits that included a mask at their neck, which could be folded up to cover the bottom half of their face. She got the idea from an art teacher in Tennessee who had posted it on the internet. Larrick used the project as an opportunity to guide students in the fundamentals of drawing faces. Ashley Dunford, Millis Road music teacher, created a special song to the tune of “This Little Light of Mine,” which students learned as part of their project. Shields discussed the completed project with her mother, Teresa Loflin, a former employee of the High Point Museum. The Photos by Norma B. Sedgefield Country Club had good news and bad news on the same day last week as a man was struck in the head by a bullet at the club. Just hours earlier, Mark Brazil and the Wyndham Championship announced ticket sales would begin June 16 for the Aug. 11-15 tournament. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 7 p.m. June 8 stating a 57-year-old man had been injured by a

Quilt exhibit planned for mendenhall homeplace By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Years ago, when our forefathers and foremothers needed warm coverings on their beds, they didn’t go to a big-box store for a blanket, much less today’s weighted blankets. They made their own coverings, or quilts, often from things they had around the house, like old clothing, scraps from making clothing 0r even feed sacks. But it wasn’t just the poor who quilted because they could not afford store-bought bed coverings. All social classes made and used quilts. According to Wikipedia, Colonial-era quilts were decorative creations that showed the needle-working skill of the maker. Many of us have a quilt or two handed down for generations. This writer has two quilt tops machinestitched by her grandmother probably near the beginning of the 20th century. Quilting is still popular today and many contemporary as well as historical quilts will be on exhibit at the

stray bullet while dining on the patio at the club. The wound was a superficial grazing and the victim declined treatment by emergency medical personnel. The Sheriff’s Office believes the bullet was possibly shot from some distance and the man, who has not been named, was not a target but the victim of an accidental shooting. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff’s District 3 Office at 336-641-6691.
Barbecue: True and Faux Why would John Shelton Reed write another book about barbecue? After all, he is a co-author of the recently revised classic, “Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue” and in 2016, author of “Barbecue” in the UNC Press’s “Savor the South” Cookbook series. The retired Kenan professor of sociology at UNC-Chapel Hill is the author of more than 20 books. He likes to write books and articles and other commentary that connect readers to their culture. His new book, “On Barbecue,” is a compilation of writings about barbecue. Barbecue means different things to different people. Just remember how many ways the term is spelled: barbecue, barbeque, barb-que, and so on. Reed

She finally found him. After a life-long search, Elke Weber found her father. And although the end of her journey is somewhat bittersweet, the Jamestown resident couldn’t be happier with her newfound family. “I’ve met cousins, wives and husbands, and children,” said Weber. “It just like I’ve known them all my life. They are the sweetest people.” Yet she will never meet the father she longed for – John Pochinchuk died in 1991. “We moved (to the United States from Germany) in 1981,” said Weber. “I could have had 10 years with him if I’d only known.” Weber is a war baby born in 1946 to a German mother and an American father, a World War II occupying forces soldier. For the first years of her life, she lived with a foster family and later with her maternal grandparents. She was 11 years old when she met her mother for the first time and their relationship has been difficult. Her moth-

explains how the term probably came about. He writes, “the word came into English only some 500 years ago. In the first decades of the 1500s Spanish explorers in the Caribbean found the locals using frameworks of sticks to support meat cooking over fires. They did this SEE BBq, PAGe 4

continued from page front will feel more comfortable,” said Sandra McGee, one of the organizers. “The theme is ‘Every Quilt Tells A Story’ so it will accent the fact that the quilts here and the quilts others are sharing will tell some of the history of homesteads such as this.” The quilts will be displayed on the porches of the Richard Mendenhall and the Madison Lindsay houses on the grounds as well as inside the bank barn. Several local quilters and quilt guilds will be present to answer questions and offer insights about the stories, symbolism and crafting techniques of their quilts. There are many different quilting patterns. Some exhibitors are expected to demonstrate their craft. Each of the quilt guilds is expected to sell tickets for raffles for one of their handmade quilts, with winners to be announced at a later date. Also on display are quilts belonging to members of the Mendenhall family, including Judith Jemima Mendenhall who grew up in the house, and Oriana Mendenhall, wife of Nereus Mendenhall, Judith’s brother. These quilts
were probably made between the 1840s-1880s. Since these quilts are over 100 years old, they will be displayed inside the Homeplace, just off the porch. The quilt show is just one of several programs scheduled by the Historic Jamestown Society to showcase the rich history of Jamestown and items that can be viewed at the Mendenhall Homeplace. Quilts were originally made by piecing fabric together by hand, a tedious process for an intricate pattern. The invention of the sewing machine around 1830 sped up the process. Local quilter Bobbie Huggins – who did a lot a quilting during the pandemic – prefers to quilt by hand, not machine, as do many people these days. “When I say I hand-quilt mine, people look at me and say, ‘What?’” Huggins said. Huggins doesn’t have a favorite pattern when she quilts – in fact she refuses to use the same pattern more than once – but just lets the mood take her. “I start with something in the middle and it tells me what to do,”
she said. She will be displaying a quilt featuring the Jamestown Public Library in the center. She used fabric she had around her house. Some people believe quilts were used to direct slaves to freedom during the Underground Railroad. “That idea was debunked many years ago,” said Shawn Rogers, director of the Mendenhall Homeplace. “It was a way for people to tell the stories of what did happen, to keep memories alive. They were basically memory quilts.” Evidence of quilting has been found as far back as 3400 BC as indicated in drawings. A carved ivory figure of an Egyptian pharaoh in the British Museum appears to be wearing a quilted jacket. Quilts are said to represent the love of the maker, tradition or history, and friendship. The word comes from the Latin “culcita,” meaning mattress or bolster.

Shields gave all the project pieces to Marian Inabinett, curator of collections at the museum. She crafted them into double-sided triangle signboards featuring pull quotes, likes and dislikes, photos and the selfportraits.

“There was so much to choose from, it was hard to edit it down, Inabinett admitted. “I tried to use a variety of thoughts and feelings and pick some that were unique representations. I found that what the kids expressed was similar to what others thought and felt.” “The students thought it was the coolest thing ever to have their work highlighted at the museum,” Shields said. “Not only did they have a voice, but they were surprised their work was important enough to be on display. masks. She was glad when she could go back to class at school. Sam Morton also liked the writing element of the project. The worst part of the pandemic for him was being home all the time. “You think you would like it,” he said, “but after a while you hate it. I was glad to be back in school and sad it is over.” All the students’ work premiered at the museum June 5 and will be on display each Saturday until the beginning of the fall semester in August. The signboards will be presented to Millis Road Elementary, where other students at the school, staff and parents can enjoy seeing the former fourth graders creative efforts.

continued from page front er provided very little information about Weber’s father, but she took those tidbits and started searching. Filling the gaps in her personal history has been challenging and she wanted to give up many times. Five years ago she had a DNA profile done and still no concrete information was revealed. Three years ago, Weber contacted a DNA detective and, in 2019, a first cousin was discovered. “I wrote to him and I never heard anything back,” said Weber. “That is when, last year in August, I said I’m giving up. I’m not interested anymore. There’s no way I can find anything.” Yet, in February, another first cousin popped up on Weber’s DNA report. This additional family connection was enough to allow the DNA detective to dig deeper. Within two days, Weber learned her grandparents immigrated to the United States in 1910. Her father, John Pochinchuk, was born in Massachusetts in 1918. During his WWII military service, he was stationed in the village where Weber’s mother lived. She also had a phone number for her first cousin, Michael Carroll. Unfortunately, Carroll had passed away. However, Weber connected with his widow, Roxanne. After many conversations and much texting, Weber and her husband, Walter, traveled to Connecticut and Massachusetts this spring to visit her newfound family.

In addition to meeting her relatives, Weber visited the house where her father lived and his grave. She learned he was much loved by his family and well respected in his community. He had no other biological children, but did marry and was a stepfather. After the visit, they continued to New York to see Weber’s 96-year-old mother. Although she suffers from dementia, when Weber showed her a picture of Pochinchuk, she quickly identified him. “She said ‘that’s your father’,” said Weber. “She told me all about him. She was so clear and it was wonderful, just

He describes the world championship barbecue cooking contest in Memphis where barbecue is defined as “pork meat only... prepared on a wood or charcoal fire.” He recognizes that many socalled barbecue restaurants “serve slow roasted meat untouched by even the bottled kind of woodsmoke and call it barbecue.” Reed asserts this product is not barbecue and calls it instead “faux ‘que.” “You see the problem. We start with barbecue cooked in a pit over live coals, or with heat and smoke from a stick burning firebox, and we end up with a Boston butt in a crock pot. Somewhere along the way we’ve crossed the line between True ‘Cue and faux ‘que. We do not intend to draw that line, just to point out that there is a hierarchy here, and the purveyors of faux ‘que are at the bottom of it.” “Why do we care? Because we believe that real barbecue is rooted in three things increasingly lacking in today’s world: taste, tradition, and a sense of place. Because we think the world will be a better place with more real barbecue in it.” You do not have to agree with Reed’s hardline stance about the necessity of cooking with wood coals to learn from and enjoy his great storytelling gifts about one of our favorite foods—true or faux.
D.G. Martin hosts “North Carolina Bookwatch,” Sunday 3:30 pm and Tuesday at 5:00 pm on PBS North Carolina (formerly UNC-TV). The program also airs on the North Carolina Channel Tuesday at 8:00 pm and other times.

like it was meant to be.” More phone calls, texts and, hopefully, more visits with family are certainly in Weber’s future. After all the years of searching, always wondering, she now has answers about her past. “I sometimes would go to bed and think I never had a father, I never really had a mother,” said Weber. “People who have not gone through this don’t understand. I’m so relieved and so happy.”
either to slow-cook it or to cure it and preserve it (as we do with country hams and jerky today.”. This apparatus was called something that the Spaniards heard as barbacoa, which soon became a Spanish word and then an English word that referred to the cooking device or method, not the resulting cooked meat. Only in the 1800s did the term begin to be used to mean the cooked meat. As late as 1894, when the Statesville Landmark wrote about barbecue being served at an event, “the paper put the noun in quotation marks, suggesting that the usage remained colloquial. Still, by then, everyone seems to have known that it meant something you could put on a plate or in a sandwich. Once that was understood, Southerners began the eternal argument about what barbecue is.” Reed writes, “whole hog in eastern North Carolina, mustard sauce in parts of South Carolina, mutton in Owensboro, Ky., ‘dry ribs’ in Memphis, beef brisket in Texas and so forth.” Reed celebrates these differences, writing that he would order Memphis ribs in Memphis, but would pass it by if it were offered in North Carolina or elsewhere. He mourns the development of “mass barbecue” chains that he calls “IHOB” or International House of Barbecue with menus, “where you can pile Texas brisket, Memphis ribs, and Carolina chopped pork all on one plate.” However, Reed has no doubt. “All understand that cooking with hardwood makes the difference between barbecue and roast meat.”

Deep-fried chicken is finger lickin’ good By ANGELA SHELF MEdEARIS tHe KItCHeN DIVA I don’t know why fried chicken tastes better when it’s served on a picnic table. The beauty of deep-fried yard bird is that if it’s cooked properly, you don’t need silverware, a plate or a napkin. Licking one’s fingers after taking an extra-large bite of beautifully fried, crispy chicken is the highest complaint a cook can receive. This recipe for Finger Lickin’ Chicken is a combination of my mother’s, my friends’ and my own fried-chicken recipe. Cook up a batch, whip up some side dishes, grab your family and friends, and find a picnic table. It’s the perfect summertime meal. FINGER-LICKIN’ CHICKEN The brining and chicken prep steps shouldn’t be skipped for the most flavorful chicken and the best results. These steps can be done a day in advance or before leaving for the day, if you want fried chicken for dinner.
spices thoroughly. Add 3 3/4 cups of the buttermilk into the bag, reserving 1/4 cup. Stir or shake with the bag sealed until the salt is completely dissolved. 2. Immerse the chicken in the mixture. Place the bag of chicken pieces in a large baking pan to prevent leaks. Refrigerate 1 hour or up to 8 hours to allow the pieces to become fully seasoned. To Prepare the Chicken: Remove the chicken from the buttermilk brine and shake off excess. Place the pieces in single layer on large wire rack set over a rimmed baking sheet. This step will dry the skin slightly to allow it to become crispy when frying. Refrigerate, uncovered, for 2 hours. (After 2 hours, the chicken can be covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated up to 6 hours longer, if needed).
Coating and Frying the Chicken: 1. Mix together the flour, poultry seasoning, baking powder, salt, black pepper, paprika and cayenne pepper in a large, shallow dish. Stir in the remaining 1/4 cup buttermilk. Combine the ingredients with your fingertips. The buttermilk will make the flour mixture thick and slightly lumpy. Working in batches of 3, drop the chicken pieces in the flour. Press both sides of the chicken pieces into the flour and lumpy pieces to coat. Gently shake excess flour from each piece. 2. Adjust oven rack to middle position, set second wire rack over second rimmed baking sheet, and place on oven rack. Heat the oven to 200 F to keep chicken warm while frying in batches. Line a large plate with double layer of paper towels to drain To Make the Brining Mixture: the fried chicken pieces on after removing 1. Continue cooking for another 4 to 6 minutes, until the chicken is golden brown. 5.
