Ford wins AJGA Invitational at Sedgefield By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com
David Ford, a rising high school senior from Peachtree Corners, Ga., is the winner of the 19th Annual AJGA Invitational held at Sedgefield Country Club June 9-12. Ford’s 8-under 272 edged out Maxwell Moldovan and Wells Williams who tied for second with a 6-under 274. Moldovan is ranked No. 1 in the Rolex AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) rankings and Ford is ranked No. 28, a ranking that could change when updated June 16. Ford took the lead after the second round on Wednesday and never gave it up during the remaining 36 holes. “It was kind of a rough putting day,” Ford said. “I knew how well I was rolling it, just nothing went in. Everything was pure on the greens, but I just didn’t make a whole lot until 17.” This is his first AJGA Invitational
title but he has won two AJGA tournaments and the 2019 Rolex Junior AllAmerican. “I’ve put myself in pretty good position my last four or five tournaments,” Ford said. “I had the lead going into today, and to finish it off, it means a lot. I’ve been working for this for awhile.” Ford has verbally committed to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. This was the first AJGA tournament since February.
A tournament like this traditionally has fewer spectators than a PGA tour event, usually just family, friends and coaches. There were even fewer this year due to the coronavirus. New guidelines were put in place to protect the health and safety of not only players, but parents, spectators, college coaches, AJGA staff, Sedgefield staff and volunteers. As expected all players had to maintain social distances. Only one family member or guardian per player was allowed. Players and spectators were required to have a mask and to put it on if social distancing was not possible. Health screening questions were daily requirements and anyone showing symptoms would be asked to leave Sedgefield immediately and return home. Players were not allowed to touch or remove the flagstick. Bunker rakes were removed and players were SEE FORd, PAGe 2

A new name for Fort Bragg?
Should Fort Bragg keep on being Fort Bragg? Or do we need another name for North Carolina’s largest military base? I got my first lesson about that question in the summer of 1961 at ROTC summer camp at Fort Bragg. A lieutenant colonel, who was the commander over several hundred cadets, welcomed us. He explained the background By d.g. MARTIN and basic rules of our upcoming ONe ON ONe training. ”Fort Bragg,” he said matter-of-factly, “was named for Gen. Braxton Bragg, one of the highest ranking officers on the Confederate side of the Civil War who fought bravely for the cause he believed in.” I thought it was interesting that our commander, who was black, was giving a tribute to an officer in an army that, if it had been victorious, would have assured the continued bondage of the lieutenant colonel’s ancestors. In 1948 President Harry Truman’s executive order desegregated our nation’s armed forces. In 1961, only 13 years later, the Army’s culture and composition was still predominantly white and southern. Even though the ROTC camp was integrated, most of us cadets came from colleges that were either almost all SEE BRAgg, PAGe 2

Recipients of this year’s Lane Pleasants Scholarship were surprised recently when members of the selection committee showed up on their porch with huge checks representing the amount of their scholarship award. Included in the group were Tatiana Frontera, Madison Underwood and Lanie Van dorp.
Graduates receive scholarships during front porch presentation By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Knock, knock. “Could you step out here? . . . You are a winner.” No, it was not the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes, but it was a special event. On June 12, three high school seniors from Jamestown Presbyterian Church received $2,000 each to use toward their college education. Normally presented during Graduation Sunday at the church, due to the coronavirus, this year’s recipients of the Lane Pleasants Scholarship were notified of the awards at their homes. Members of the selection committee, including Ricki Hall, Brian Stroud, Bill and Clarajo Pleasants and Pastor Jay Smith, showed up on the students’ doorsteps to present them with checks. Committee member Charles Stanfield was unable to participate in the front porch presentations. The Pleasants family and the JPC Session established the scholarship from memorial contributions made by church members, friends, family and business associates following Lane’s death on Jan. 29, 1999, due to complications from a lung transplant. It recognizes one or more high school seniors who is a member of Jamestown Presbyterian Church and exhibits exemplary academic achievement, leadership qualities, and participation in church, school and community activities. This year, the committee selected three scholarship
recipients, all of whom more that fulfilled the criteria. They were Tatiana Frontera, daughter of Carlos and Mabel Frontera; Madison Underwood, daughter of Matt and Amy Underwood; and Lanie VanDorp, daughter of Bud and Amy VanDorp. “I had been looking forward to the presentations and they actually turned out to be very exciting and the highlight of my day,” said Stroud, JPC Youth Director. “It was very different (from the usual presentations in church) to ring the door bell and see the surprise on the faces of the students as well as their parents.” “I have never seen so many big smiles in one afternoon along with a few tears,” Clarajo Pleasants added. Tatiana Frontera graduated from Weaver Academy where she was an active member of the National Honor Society. She plans to attend North Carolina State University. “I am interested in a number of subjects including environmental science, interior and fashion design or business and entrepreneurship,” Frontra said. “So I have applied as undeclared for my major. I hope to be able to study abroad for a semester.” Madison Underwood graduated from Southwest Guil-

As of June 10, Guilford County has 1,806 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 81 deaths. Broader testing is critical to managing COVID-19. Currently ongoing and running through July 31, a Mobile Testing Unit will make several stops at various locations in Greensboro and High Point, North Carolina providing free COVID-19 testing to local residents who fall into high risk categories for COVID-19. Triad Adult and Pediatric Medicine (TAPM), Guilford County Division of Public Health, UnitedHealthcare of North Carolina, Greensboro Housing Authority, High Point Housing Authority Guilford County Emergency Management, LabCorp, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) have partnered to bring the Mobile Unit to underserved communities to increase COVID-19 testing access and capacity in the community and keep

continued from front white or almost all black. My college, Davidson, did not admit a black student until after I graduated. For nearly all of us, the ROTC camp was to be our first experience with “massive integration.” I wondered then, and still wonder, what was going through our lieutenant colonel’s mind when he introduced us to Braxton Bragg and explained, or tried to, why this base, our home for the next six weeks, was named for a Confederate General. Throughout the summer I admired his quiet demeanor and professional manner in dealing with the challenges of managing so many potential young officers and his staff of white officers. He did it all without fanfare. That summer was my first experience with a black person directing white subordinates. It accustomed me to the

possibility that the coming integration of our country, and especially our region, would be a great positive, at least for me. A couple of years later, I returned to Fort Bragg as a green second lieutenant, very green. Another black soldier, First Lieutenant Woodrow Wilson Barbee came to my rescue. He and I were participants in a Special Forces mission from Fort Bragg to the Kuskokwim River region in southwestern Alaska for training with National Guard troops. Barbee reached out to me and became my teacher and friend. He showed the Eskimo soldiers and the rest of us how to operate with weapons, communications equipment, and the importance of cooperating with other units. Later, in maneuvers in Alaska’s Big Delta region, with temperatures dropping to 40 below, gasoline for our stoves was a precious commodity. But, when a call came out from another unit that had an emergency need for fuel, Barbee insisted that we give up a share of our precious fuel. Barbee’s example helped me become a better soldier. I admired him especially as he helped me put aside
our shared Carolinas codes of racial segregation and separation. Sadly, after retiring as a major, he died in 1999 and is buried in Durham, his hometown. All this is to say that my connection to Fort Bragg is an important part of my lifelong effort to overcome the racist background that my region imposed upon me. It has done the same for many others. If the time has come to change Fort Bragg’s name, I wish we could choose a name that recognizes the role of the armed forces, and especially Fort Bragg, in the on-going process of helping our country move beyond its racist past. Maybe name it after someone like the lieutenant colonel who commanded my group at ROTC camp, if only I could remember his name. Or how about Fort Woodrow Wilson Barbee? D.G. She also participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Wiley’s Warriors and was a student council representative. Underwood plans to attend East Carolina University where she will major in physical therapy and exercise science. Lanie VanDorp graduated from Southwest Guilford High School. She had a wide range of interests while in school including sports and the arts. She was a member of the soccer and tennis teams. In middle school, she participated in concert band and was a member of her high school marching band. She has used her artistic ability to begin a pet portrait business. While attending the North Carolina State College of Design, she will be studying in the industrial design program. Each scholarship recipient appreciates
the help the award will be to her future education. “I have always felt loved and supported by my church family and I cherish my memories growing up in JPC,” VanDorp said. Over the past 20 years, $61,000 has been awarded to deserving seniors. Lane, in whose memory the scholarship was established, was a lifelong resident of Jamestown and a member of JPC. She graduated from Southwest Guilford High School and attended the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She worked part time for Fossil Watcher and for the After School Program at JPC. The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The Sedgefield tournament was boys only, ages 12-19. The AJGA first hosted an event in Greensboro in 1988 for boys and girls, while the AJGA Invitational at Sedgefield was created as a boys-only Major event (in most years) opposite a girls counterpart in the Rolex Girls Junior Championship, created in 1992. This is the 11th year Sedgefield has hosted an AJGA tournament. Many AJGA alumni who participated in tournaments as junior golfers went on to PGA Tour success, including fourtime Major winner Brooks Koepka; 2015 Masters, U.S. Open and FedExCup champion and 2017 The Open Championship winner Jordan Spieth; 2011 Wyndham Championship, 2012 U.S. Open and 2018 The Players Championship winner Webb
Simpson; 2013 Wyndham Championship and 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed (who beat Jordan Spieth in a playoff at the Wyndham in 2013); 2015 The Players Championship winner Rickie Fowler; Five-time PGA Tour champion Billy Horschel; and 2009 AJGA Invitational at Sedgefield champion, 2017 FedExCup champion and 2018 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas. Mark Brazil, director of the Wyndham Championship, has a long history with the AJGA. Brazil worked with the AJGA from 1993 to 2001 in tournament administration and development as executive vice president of development. In 2005, he joined the Board of Directors of the AJGA, working with the organization’s charitable foundation, which oversees financial aid and leadership programming for junior golfers and an internship in sports. In 2019, Brazil won the AJGA Digger Smith award for his contributions to junior golf. The award, which started in 1991, is given to a supporter devoted to the group’s mission of developing young women and men through competitive golf. The award is named for J.R. “Digger” Smith, AJGA chairman of the board, who has been a part of the AJGA for more than 30 years. Next for Sedgefield Country Club is the Wyndham Championship, which was moved later one week to Aug. 11-16.

A special meal for a special man By angela shelf medearis the kitchen diva During stressful times like these, I’ve grown to have an added appreciation for the two men who have been pillars of love and support in my life, my dad, Howard, and my husband, Michael. I was blessed to be raised in a home with my diligent, bookloving father and my wonderful mother. My husband also was a wonderful daddy for our daughter, and lovingly filled the father role for my granddaughter and numerous other children when he worked as a tutor and substitute teacher. There are many other men who are “fathers of the heart,” if not actual fathers, and they also should be celebrated on Father’s Day. If you’ve ever wondered how Father’s Day got its start, we have Sonora Louise Smart Dodd to thank. When Sonora was 16 years old, her father became a widower and was left to raise Dodd and her five younger brothers alone. In 1909, Dodd was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church when she realized the need for a day to celebrate fathers, especially her own. Sonora started a petition to celebrate the first Father’s Day in early June to coincide with her father’s birthday. Unfortunately, only two people signed up. Finally, after moving to a date later in the month, Sonora was able to convince several churches to participate. The first Father’s Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington. Families honored fathers by wearing roses -- red for those still alive, and white for those who were deceased. The city’s mayor and even the state’s governor issued Father’s Day proclamations to commemorate the occasion. Not satisfied with just a local celebration, Sonora spent decades traveling around the United States to campaign for a national holiday. Despite Sonora’s enthusiastic efforts, Father’s Day wasn’t nationally recognized until 1972.
In 1970, Congress finally passed Joint Resolution 187, which called on citizens to “offer public and private expressions of such day to the abiding love and gratitude which they bear for their fathers.” President Richard Nixon signed the resolution into law two years later. There isn’t enough money in the world to show my father and my husband how much I appreciate the love and care that they’ve given to me and our family. And while they don’t really need anything in the way of gifts, they both love meatloaf dearly. I know that serving a well-seasoned meatloaf covered with a flavorful tomato sauce, a mound of creamy mashed potatoes and a crisp green salad will make my father and my husband happy on Father’s Day, or any day of the year. Have a wonderful Father’s Day! MEATLOAF WITH SPICY TOMATO SAUCE 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1/3 cup milk 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons ground black pepper 1/4 cup olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely grated 1 tablespoon thyme leaves, chopped; or 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1/2 cup ketchup 1/4 cup mild to medium salsa 2 pounds 80/20 ground beef chuck 1/2 cup panko 1 tablespoon steak sauce 1. Arrange a rack in the center of the oven and heat to 450 F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil. 2. Whisk the eggs, milk, Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon each of the salt and pepper in a large bowl until completely combined. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, thyme or poultry seasoning and 1/2
teaspoon each of salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are tender and lightly golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Add 2 tablespoons of the ketchup and 1 tablespoon of the salsa and cook until most of the moisture has evaporated and the mixture is thick and brick-red colored, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the onions cool slightly. Then add them to the beaten eggs and mix to combine. 4. Add the beef to the egg and onion mixture. Break up the meat with a fork or wooden spoon, and then mix to thoroughly combine; you don’t want to see any clumps of beef. Add the panko and gently mix to combine. Stir the meat vigorously with a wooden spoon for about 7 seconds; it will become more homogenous and tackier. 5. Transfer the meat to the prepared baking sheet and shape into a 9-by-5-inch loaf.
Mix the remaining ketchup and salsa, the remaining salt and pepper, and the steak sauce together. Smooth sauce mixture over the top of the meatloaf. 6. Bake for 5 minutes, and then reduce the oven temperature to 350 F. Continue to bake until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of the loaf registers 150 F, about 30 to 35 minutes. Allow the meatloaf to rest for 20 minutes before slicing. Serves 6.
