Residents request silence of train horns at night By CaROL BROOKs freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

“Toooot! Toooot!” To many who live in Jamestown, the sound of trains coming through is a pleasant, if not soothing, sound. But to a number of people, the sound is troublesome and upsets sleep patterns. At the June 2018 Town Council meeting, Sheila Friedt, who lives in the Lennox Square Condominiums on West Main Street, addressed the issue that the train horns are disrupting her sleep. She stated that she knew the Town could not do anything about the noise from the trains because they have to blow their horns at the intersection but she asked if there was anything that could be done to prevent them from blowing their horn down

from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Lennox Square is adjacent to the train tracks, the closest building being approximately 85 yards from the center of the tracks. Federal regulation requires that locomotive horns begin sounding 15-20 seconds before entering a public railway/highway crossing and no more than one-quarter of a mile in advance. Since Friedt was speaking during a public comment period, the Town Council was not required to comment but could consider the information for a future meeting. The following month, Robert Frederick, who lives three-fourths of a mile from the tracks, took up Friedt’s complaint and asked the Council to work towards silencing the trains. He said that many communities in the United States had banned

the sound of train horns at night. Frederick noted that there was a noise ordinance in Jamestown that prevented establishments from having live music past a certain time at night, but the train was much louder than the music. He also stated that there was research that indicated negative impacts of loud noises on health. Again, since this was during a public comment period, the Council did not comment. Frederick renewed his appeal at the April 2019 Council meeting. “I’m here to say it’s past time to silence the train,” Frederick said. “In July 2018, I came before Council giving you all information from the federal government about how we can silence the train.” Frederick suggested implementing “quiet zones” at railway crossings where

train operators cannot routinely sound the horn when the train is approaching, but only blow the horn when there is an emergency or if the power is off at a crossing. He cited Apex, Asheville, New Bern, Rocky Mount, Salisbury and Kannapolis as North Carolina cities that have instituted quiet zones and noted that Fayetteville will soon have a quiet zone. More than 800 quiet zones have been established in the United States. Frederick believes quiet zones are “higher in priority over several short sidewalk projects such as one along Scientific Street that’s listed as a could-do [on the Town’s 2019-2020 Capital Improvement Plan] that would allow folks to get to their grocery store. Let’s make a couple of quiet Photo Courtesy Robert Frederick zones here at the intersec- Robert Frederick poses at a sign in sun City West, ariz., indicating a “quiet zone” where trains should see HORns, PaGe 2 not blow their horns.

It’s big. Really big. You can’t miss it. But the new mural that covers part of the exterior wall at The Soap Lady is one step in helping to beautify the downtown area of Jamestown by breaking up large areas of blank white wall space. “At first I was going to do something very historic,” said Susan Stringer, the Soap Lady. “A train or something. But my daughter said, ‘You’re a soap store. Why are you putting a train on the wall?’ My granddaughters said to do a mermaid. I have five granddaughters and they’re all into mermaids.” “We’re not a beach store. We’re a soap store. She’s taking a bath.” Stringer approached building owner Ed Stafford who was all for it and with Stafford’s consent, Stringer contacted Jamestown artist John Firesheets who took the idea from there. “The early ideas and proposals were much simpler and less ornate,” Stafford said. “We thought we had one of the prettiest buildings on Main Street so we really hesitated on having anything done. “But John is a talented artist and did an admirable job on that rough textured wall. As long as Susan is there, it is OK with us. Many towns have murals on old buildings and now, so do we!” Stringer moved her business across the parking lot to the larger

John Milton Worth By LInda WILLaRd JameStown friendS meetinG John Milton Worth, the son of Quaker parents David Worth and his wife Abigail Gardner Worth, was born near Centre Friends Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina on June 28, 1811. The Worth family were probably members of Centre Friends Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina. Worth’s father, David, was a physician who had studied medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and practiced in Guilford County, North Carolina. Worth was the brother of Civil War era North Carolina Governor Jonathan Worth and a first cousin to Reverend Daniel Worth, a Methodist minister and noted abolitionist. In 1832, Worth married Sarah Dicks. Dicks was probably also a Quaker from Randolph County, North Carolina. Worth and his wife were the parents of five children, three sons

and two daughters. Their son Shubal Gardner Worth, was killed during the Civil War by a sharp shooter near Richmond, Virginia on May 11, 1864. Worth received his early education in the local schools in Guilford County, North Carolina. He studied medicine at Transylvania University (present-day Transylvania College) in Lexington, Kentucky. Worth practiced medicine briefly in Guilford County, North Carolina. After abandoning his medical practice, Worth became a farmer, a gold miner, and a store owner in Montgomery County, North Carolina. From 1842-1844, Worth represented Montgomery

dr. John milton Worth June 28, 1811 – april 5, 1900 and Moore Counties, North Carolina in the state Senate. Worth was also a colonel in the Sixty-third Militia Regiment; however, he resigned his commission on December 20, 1861 in order to give his full attention to the position of Salt Commissioner. In 1864, Worth became a colonel of the Seventy-sixth North Carolina Regiment. This regiment was known as the Sixth, or Senior Reserve. It appears that his primary duty in the Senior Reserve was appending deserters and draft dodgers. In 1870, Worth was

elected to represent Randolph and Moore Counties, North Carolina in the state senate. Worth voted to impeach Governor William Woods Holden. Holden was impeached and then removed from office by white supremacist politicians in the state legislature who opposed his efforts to imprison members of the Ku Klux Klan. Worth served as North Carolina state treasurer from 1876 – 1885. Worth’s term in office led to the settlement of the state’s debts and the revision of the North Carolina tax laws. After retiring, Worth became president of the Bank of Randolph, the Southern Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and the head of the Worth Manufacturing Company. The Worth Manufacturing Company had large cotton mills at Worthville and Central Falls in Randolph County, North Carolina. Worth died on April 5, 1900 and is buried in the Asheboro City Cemetery in Asheboro, North Carolina.

Point, North Carolina. Blair delivered milk for the family dairy and during the Depression was known to leave milk at homes where there were children and the parents could not afford to buy milk. Blair also had a second “job.” He delivered “cough medicine!” The cough medicine was better known as moonshine, white lightening, or illegal liquor. Blair’s second job caused him to spend Christmas Eve night as a “guest” in the Martinsville, Virginia jail. Blair was caught delivering 125 gallons of “cough medicine” back to North Carolina. Hopefully Santa was able to find him there. Blair’s father once remarked that his son was “born to be hung.” He was a gearhead, moonshiner, and a pool shark. He was also a “genius at the wheel.” Blair’s first love was stock car racing. He watched as the High Point Speedway was being built across the road from the family dairy farm. Blair entered his 1941 Mercury

Blair built this track not with the purse from his races but with “cough medicine” money. World War II closed all of the race tracks. Before the race tracks were closed, Blair ran three races at the High Point Speedway. During World War II, Blair worked in the Baltimore, Maryland shipyards building battleships.

Blair is considered to be a true pioneer of Stock Car Racing. In 1947, a meeting of drivers, mechanics, team owners, and other interested parties led to the official creation of NCSCC, it was later renamed NASCAR. Blair also ran in the first NASCAR races at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Martinsville, Virginia, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and the initial Southern 500. During his racing career, Blair won three Grand National Races. Blair retired from racing and delivering “cough medicine’ in 1956. During his retirement, Blair’s many Depression-era acts of kindness were not forgotten. People often dropped off fresh vegetables, fish, and other small gifts to repay his kindness. Blair died on November 2, 1995 at the age of 84. He is buried in the Lebanon United Methodist Cemetery in High Point, North Carolina.

tions in Jamestown. We already have the crossing guards in place so it won’t cost very much.” If implemented, the zones would only be for Dillon and Oakdale roads crossings, less than a half-mile apart. Frederick hopes High Point and Greensboro will follow suit and establish quiet zones at Scientific Street and Mackay Road respectively, a distance of approximately 4 miles. In May, Frederick, who has lived in Jamestown for five years, presented a petition to the Town Council signed by about 200 residents from all parts of Jamestown requesting the Town act to silence the train’s horn at night. “Because we had the needed number of signatures, we didn’t even get to Oakdale, a neighborhood that would be profoundly affected by this,” Frederick said. Silencing the horn at night would be a “partial quiet zone” and normal horn operation could continue during the day. Federal regulations say the horn must blow during school hours. Frederick sited the recent death of a man who was struck by a train and conjectured that perhaps the man, who lived in Courtyard Commons near the tracks, had become so used to the horn that he ignored it. Silencing the horn at certain times would make it more relevant when it was blown. “When they do hear it, they will think, ‘You know what? That’s an emergency. I need to pay attention to what’s going on,’” Frederick said. He added that a train’s horn blows in four different directions at levels between 96 and 110 decibels. Yet again, since this was during a public comment period, the Council did not comment. Frederick said unlike High Point and Greensboro, in Jamestown the Council is not required to act on a petition. Should the Council decide to pursue the matter, it would come at a cost to the Town, which would be required to pay an annual maintenance fee for upkeep of the signal boxes at each crossing. Costs would be at least $10,000 year. Quiet zones are at least one-half mile in length. Horns may be sounded in emergencies, get animals off the track or to comply with other railroad or federal rules even within a quiet zone. If a quiet zone, or partial quiet zone, is established, each crossing must be equipped with active warning devices like flashing lights, gates, warning devices and power out indicators. Frederick can live with either a total quiet zone or a partial one. “I would love it to be nighttime at least, but it’s whatever the federal regulators decide is possible,” he said. “Once we know what is possible, then we can talk about day or night. “I’ve talked to some people in other towns that have done this and they love it.

Residents differ on the train horn noise By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

If it weren’t for the train, Jamestown as we know it today would not exist. Founding fathers originally established the town west of Deep River, around the Mendenhall Homeplace and what is now High Point City Lake Park. But when talk of a new railroad line nearby arose, many didn’t want it so close to their homes, even though commerce and travel were the mainstays of the railroad at the time, more so than today. Dr. Shubal Coffin wanted the train to come closer to “old” Jamestown but the tracks ran farther away. So, Coffin moved and built a new house in “new” James-

town east of Deep River, reportedly turning his back on “old” Jamestown, west of the river, which had voted against having the new railroad tracks come close to town. Built in 1855, the home was constructed overlooking the railroad tracks that had recently arrived in Jamestown “to enjoy the improved access and visibility afforded by train travel.” Coffin’s house, now known familiarly as the “yellow house,” actually faces the train tracks. One can only imagine the care he had to take when treating patients as the train came rumbling through. “New” Jamestown, currently the downtown area, grew as a result of the train. Richard and Sheila Freidt have lived in Lennox Square Condominiums since 2016.

The closest Lennox Square building is 84.8 yards from the middle of the tracks. The Freidts knew about the train tracks behind them when they moved in, but since the second track was added in 2009, the volume of traffic has increased and trees which created a buffer were removed. Richard said he has counted 31 trains a day coming by but a friend said there were 62. “The daytime trains aren’t that bad, but at night, my doctor tells me to get eight hours of sleep and I can’t,” he said. “I don’t understand how they can blow horns unnecessarily. We’ve got children who have to go to school. There are 24 units in our buildings and most of them are elderly and they like to have a little more sleep, too.”

“It’s irritating. Very much. If I had known any of that I would have never moved in. I think I might sell out, but I don’t know who would want to buy it,” he said. There are two buildings at Lennox Square but several more concrete pads have been poured for several years. Friedt thinks the train noise may be holding up construction of more buildings. Slightly more than a football field away from Lennox Square is BL Stained Glass on Wade Street. The company designs stained glass windows and other glass products. The back door – which is sometimes open – is only 31.5 yards from the center of the tracks. “You can’t get much

closer than we are at the shop,” said Karen Walls, whose family owns the business, “and we do perform precision work. It has not bothered us at all. In fact, we don’t even notice it. “I have been on the phone and had people say, ‘what’s that?’ and realized that the whistle was blowing and I didn’t even notice.” Walls lives in the Yorkshire development near the underpass and said the horn noise doesn’t bother her there either. “In fact, I find it kind of appealing.,” she said. “Makes me want to hop on a train and go somewhere. We are taking a family trip on the train [soon], and I do hope they blow the whistle appropriately through all the towns. Safety first!”

Wade Gabel, owner of The Deck in Jamestown, brought shirts for the Scouts to wear while picking up litter along Main Street. He also furnished gloves and trash bags.

troop, he provided those who helped pick up trash with bright orange shirts as a safety measure, gloves and large trash bags. Eight Scouts and three leaders gathered at The Deck on the morning of June 1 to begin their task. They canvased Main Street from Potter Drive to Jamestown United Methodist Church, Gannaway Street and Oakdale Road from Main to the railroad crossing. Before meeting with the Scouts to begin the cleanup endeavor, Gabel rode through town and tossed out 10 of his business cards. “I hated doing it, but I grew up as a sales guy and know how incentives can drive people to work harder,” Gabel said. “I told the boys I could give them $10 for every care they found. This was above and beyond the donation to the troop. I got back every card.” Unfortunately, since June 1, Gabel has already seen the litter begin to build up. “I think businesses should be held accountable to help keep the town looking good,” Gabel said. “They need to keep their grass maintained and trash in front of their businesses picked up. I have seen other small towns that look so much nicer than ours. It is easy to talk about, but it starts with action.” Gabel envisions the town creating a standard for the appearance of businesses and if it is not kept, the town could send someone to do it and invoice the owner.

Friedt says sometimes the train operators blow the horn at the Scientific Street crossing and hold it down until Oakdale road, a distance of slightly less than one mile. It is the faster trains that blow it longer. Other times the horn begins to sound just on the other side of Lennox Square and holds it down. “There are four horns on each one of those engines, blowing in four directions. It’s unbearable,” Friedt said. He added that sometimes the trains stop at their buildings and blow the horn about 10 times when they get ready to start up again. “There’s a law that they have to blow their horn at an intersection but, by golly, wait until you get there, or close by.

scouts

continued from front Meanwhile, Scouts in Troop 68 plan to continue helping with Main Street clean up every four to six months. “Getting a donation from Mr. Gabel and working to help pick up litter in town was a perfect marriage,” said Scoutmaster John Yoakum. “We liked everything about the arrangement. We did not realize there was such a need for this, but boy did we find out there was. “My son was disappointed that his bag was not filled, but when I looked in it he must have had 300 cigarette butts. Smokers are sometimes some of the biggest litterers.” All the Scouts were frustrated to find so much litter scattered throughout the town. One of the Boy Scout principals is “Leave No Trace.” For every adventure activity in which Scouts participate, they do a police watch to make sure the location they leave is as good or better than they

found it. Filmount is a good example of this. “Filmount is a pristine wilderness and most Scouts consider it the pinnacle of their Scouting experience to go there,” Yoakum said. “More than 25,000 Scouts go through Filmount each year, but they leave no trace to having been there.” The Scouts were disappointed to find so much litter and trash in town and were glad to combine one of their creeds of “simple service” with a fundraiser for their troop. They plan to come back as a troop to continue cleaning as a service project. “This is a good way to serve the Jamestown community,” Yoakum said. Gabel is equally pleased. “In the past, I have paid my employees to come in an hour early and we would ‘spend quality time’ walking around together to pick up trash within view of The Deck,” he said with a smile. “This frees them to do the jobs I hired them to do.”

week, so with the cold winter we experienced, there were times when Firesheets was prevented from working. He tried to warm up the surface with a heat gun, but the thick paint would “run like water.” “It all has to be warm enough to paint or it will fall off,” Firesheets said. “There were things I didn’t want to start to do because I felt a responsibility to Susan and to the artwork to try to do it under the best conditions.” He began painting in August of last year but believes that he was only able to work about 90 days on the mural. Swat-A-Litterbug The N.C Department of Transportation’s Swat-ALitterbug Program encourages the public to report people who litter in an effort to help make North Carolina roadways cleaner. The public can report those who litter to NCDOT’s Litter Management Section by filling out an online form or calling NCDOT Customer Service Office at 877-368-4968. Upon receipt of the reported information, NCDOT will mail the registered owner of the vehicle that was reported a formal notification, signed by the N.C. Safely show off your new puppy By sam maZZOTTa Paw’S corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our puppy “Clyde” is about four months old, and we can’t wait to show him off this summer. We have several outings to the park planned, as well as a group camping trip. Is there anything we should be wary of when taking him out to meet his adoring public? — Jesse and Tom in White Plains, New York DEAR JESSE AND TOM: Congratulations on your new puppy! Taking Clyde out to meet people is a fine idea, and it sounds like you’re planning ahead to cover any contingencies. He’s at just the right age to do so: older than four months, so that he’s developed enough to interact with other dogs and people, and his immune system is strong enough to fight off most threats (as long as he’s had his shots on schedule). He’s following commands and

learning to walk on a leash. Here’s a few more things to do: * Give Clyde some early socialization by scheduling play dates with dogs you already know well. These don’t have to be very long; meeting for a few minutes during a walk, for example. * Plan a few trial runs to the dog park and the people park; schedule them during off-peak hours in the early morning so you have more control over Clyde’s interactions. * Avoid taking him out on very hot or humid days; aim for early morning or late evening at the height of summer. Bring plenty of cold water just for Clyde to drink. * Watch Clyde for signs of being overwhelmed if he’s around crowds of people or dogs. Take him to a less crowded area if he seems stressed out. CeOs for Abortion By RICH LOWRy Clarity of thought and expression about moral issues is not a core competency of CEOs. If anyone had any doubt, look no further than the “historic” pro-abortion statement by nearly 200 CEOs that ran in a fullpage ad in The New York Times. It is a festival of absurdity and euphemism, an exercise in perverse virtue-signaling to a progressive audience that believes that maintaining one of the most permissive pro-abortion regimes in the developed world is a virtue. The CEOs define abortion as “equality” (“Don’t Ban Equality”) and, of course, refer to it as “comprehensive reproductive care,” the ubiquitous phrase that has the advantage of sounding like the opposite of what it’s describing. The CEOs contend that abortion is central to their businesses, which might be true if all of their companies had the same business model as Planned Parenthood. But Bloomberg L.P., Amalgamated Bank and H&M, to name three of the companies whose CEOs signed the ad, are hardly dependent on abortion to thrive. The old saw was, “What’s good for General Motors is good for America.” Now, according to top CEOs, what’s good for abortion is good for American business. They seem to consider abortion a crucial component of GDP just like personal consumption, business investment, government spending and net exports. They argue that “equality in the workplace” is an important business issue, and it is impossible to achieve without unrestricted access to abortion. Any restriction “threatens the health, independence and economic stability of our employees and customers.”

The idea that abortion is necessary for the health of women is one of the most misleading pro-abortion cliches. Comprehensive data from Florida last year shows that only a small percentage involve a threat to the mother’s life or health, and pro-life laws account for such cases — even the sweeping Alabama law has a health exception. The contention that restrictions put “the economy at risk” is nonsensical. Are we supposed to believe that the reduction of the abortion rate in the U.S. from its high in 1980 of 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age to its post-Roe v. Wade low of 14.6 as of 2014 has been a calamity for corporate America? By this standard, Utah must be a terrible place to do business since its abortion rate is so low, and the District of Columbia an enticing place to do business since its abortion rate is so high. (To the contrary, Forbes ranks Utah as the second-best state for business in the country.) The implication is that these CEOs prefer that their employees and customers not become mothers, or if they are mothers, not have more children. It apparently hasn’t occurred to them that unborn children will grow up to buy their products or perhaps work for their firms one day. The CEO ad is another sign that the debate over abortion has entered a new phase. It isn’t enough anymore to say that abortion should be safe, legal and rare, the old Bill Clinton formulation, because that implies a moral disapproval. Now, abortion is a positive good. Pro-life laws will have to prevail against this inflamed pro-abortion sentiment — and the swath of big business that shares it. Abby Larrick earns Girl Scouts' highest honor

Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont is pleased to announce that Abby Larrick, Jamestown, earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. Larrick, daughter of Andy and Tammy Larrick and member of Girl Scout Troop 40658, started a before-school club for 4th grades students to teach them the basics of photography. Using donated digital cameras, the students studied photographic inspiration, composition, rule of thirds, light and mood, shape, line, portraiture, landscapes and how to critique work. By earning the Girl Scout

Gold Award, Larrick has become a community leader. Her accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart. “Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award designation is truly a remarkable achievement, and this young woman exemplifies leadership in all its forms,” said Lane Cook, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont. “She saw a need in her community and took action. Her extraordinary dedication, perseverance and leadership, is making the world a better place." The Gold Award represents the highest achieve-

ment in Girl Scouting; it recognizes girls in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects. After the minimum requirements are completed, the Gold Award project is the culmination of a girl's demonstration of self-discipline, leadership ability, time management, creativity, initiative and a significant mastery of skills. Each girl must dedicate a minimum of 80 hours to planning and implementing her project, which must benefit the community and have long lasting impact. Since 1916, girls have successfully answered the call

to go gold, an act that indelibly marks them as accomplished members of their communities and the world. Some universities and colleges offer scholarships unique to Gold Award recipients, and girls who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces may receive advanced rank in recognition of their achievements.
