Dogs rescued from Morris Farm address PLANNING BOARD TO DISCUSS AUMAN REZONING The Jamestown Planning Board will hold a public hearing June 13 at 6 p.m. to consider an amendment to the Land Development Ordinance changing the zoning of 4718 Harvey Road from Agricultural (AG) to Conditional Zoning-Bypass (CZ-B). The parcel, known as the Auman property, is approximately 31.4 acres and is near Jamestown Middle School, HaynesInman School and the Jamestown Bypass, currently under construction. The meeting will be held in the Civic Center at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend. SENIOR HIGHLIGHTS Superintendent Sharon Contreras discussed some of the accomplishments of the Class of 2022 and highlighted 13 of its outstanding seniors June 2 during a media briefing. Among those recognized were Christian Atwater and Abigail Repko. Atwater, a student at Ragsdale High School, is a mentor to young women in the Leadership LINKS program, helps Nigerian refugees through fundraisers and food drives and serves as the captain of the Ragsdale Women’s basketball team. She plans to study sports management at college in the fall. Repko, a student at Southwest Guilford High School, has been on the honor roll since her freshman year, and is a member of the National Honor Society, Students Against Violence Everywhere and was president of the Beta Club. This year, she was also cocaptain of both the volleyball and softball teams, and All-Conference in softball. She earned the Service-Learning Diploma by completing at least 187 hours of service to the community. This fall, she will study criminal justice at Appalachian State. CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS SENDS FOOD TO LOCAL FOOD PANTRY The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently delivered 24 pallets of food, each weighing around 1,500 pounds, for a total of 40,000 pounds, to the food pantry at Renaissance Church on Harvey Road in Jamestown. This is the third truckload the Church has sent to the Triad for distribution to pantries and people in the area. Church-owned farms and production facilities grow and produce millions of pounds of food each year through the help of thousands of volunteers. The food is distributed to those in need through 124 “bishops’ storehouses” located around the world. There is one in High Point, but the largest storehouse is in Salt Lake City, Utah. Paula Boast is an associate pastor and director of the food pantry at Renaissance Church. RETREAT AT SEDGEFIELD SELLS FOR $52.33 MILLION The new upscale apartments at the Retreat at Sedgefield have a new owner. Developer Berkley Properties of Greensboro has reportedly sold the community to New York investment group Stonecutter Capital Management for $52.33 million. The apartment community, which opened last year, is on 16.8 acres of the former Pilot Life Insurance headquarters across the street from the Sedgefield area. It backs up to West Gate City Boulevard.

More than 34 small black dogs, presumably Miniature Pinschers, were found in the back yard of a home in the 3200 block of Morris Farm Road on May 23 after neighbors complained of non-stop barking. The location is the listed address for a registered nonprofit named Garnet’s Min Pin Rescue, according to state records.

High Point and Guilford County Animal Control along with High Point Police responded. Initial reports indicated two of the dogs were dead and being eaten by the others but none were found. When officials responded, a neighbor said the owner had not been home since the previous Friday. Animal Control was able to remove all dogs on May 24 and SEE DOGS, PAGE 2

Abigail Salthouse, left, the 2018 Lane Pleasants Scholarship recipient, served as presenter to this year’s recipient, Ava Johnson.

Sibling continues scholarship tradition BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com On June 5, Ava Johnson received the Lane Pleasants Scholarship during Senior Sunday at Jamestown Presbyterian Church. She was the second Johnson to receive this award, following her sister Sophia who was a 2019 scholarship winner. In fact, during the 23 years the scholarships have been given to deserving seniors in the church, six sets of siblings have received the honor. Others include Abigail and Haley Salthouse (2018, 2021); Katherine and Kelly McGill (2000, 2004); Leigh Ann, Tayla and Savannah Tally (2003, 2005, 2009); Elizabeth and Catherine Minor (2007, 2015); and Charles and Kevin Stanfield (2010, 2012). The siblings are among 34 scholarship recipients to date. A total of $69,000 has been distributed to help the youth continue their education at the colleges of their choice. “The recipients of this scholarship have and will always be a rep-

Lane Pleasants resentation of Lane Pleasants,” said Brian Stroud, a former scholarship recipient. “They demonstrate to the committee that they hold the same spirit and light that Lane had in her daily life.” The daughter of Jamestown residents Bill and Clarajo Pleasants, Lane lost her life in 1999 following a lung transplant in a courageous fight against cystic fibrosis. She was a life-long resident of Jamestown and active member of the community and Jamestown Presbyterian Church. SEE SIBLING, PAGE 2

Do you know what modifications and improvements you can have done to make your home safer as well as more comfortable? The recent HomeFit workshop offered by the Jamestown AARP Livable Communities Committee presented many solutions to upfit your home so you can stay in it as long as possible. Many of the tips offered are good safety suggestions that anyone can use, no matter their age or physical ability. Bob Gerken, a local AARP representative and member of the Jamestown AARP Livable Communities Committee, presented the third of three workshops offered by the committee. “Whatever you do, keep that four-letter word ‘safe’

in your plans,” Gerken said. He began by pointing out the high costs of alternatives to living at home, including assisted living facilities, nursing homes and adult day care. Even private duty home health care can make a large monthly hole in the finances. “Compare these costs to the cost of modifying your home,” Gerken suggested. He also pointed out the need to make certain your home is accessible to those who visit, a term he called “visitability”. A good place to start is modifying existing entrances, making them wide enough for wheelchairs, adding ramps, making certain steps are safe for walkers. Exterior lighting could be motionactivated to guide visitors to the door. Video doorbells are also a good product. “Remember, this is your home,” Gerken said. “You need to incorporate those items that will make it safer for you to live and SEE HOMEFIT, PAGE 6

DOGS

CONTINUED FROM FRONT the owner has agreed to surrender them to other animal rescue organizations. The Guilford County Animal Services issued the following statement on May 26: On May 24, at approx. 10 a.m. the City of High Point Animal Control obtained a search warrant to remove all animals located at Morris Farm Drive. Guilford County Animal Services’ Emergency Response team aided the City of High Point Animal Control Department with the removal of 34 small breed dogs from the residence. All dogs are currently being held at the Guilford County Animal Resource Center where they are being provided with daily care. The N.C. Department of Agriculture is looking into the problem and will decide whether to take civil action for misuse of an animal rescue. Records indicate the homeowner is Mary McCormick, who is

also the registered agent for the nonprofit. The Morris Farm development has a Jamestown address but is not within the town limits and is just outside the town’s extra-territorial jurisdiction. Wikipedia describes the Miniature Pinscher, also known as the Zwergpinscher, and Min Pin, is a small breed of dog originating in Germany. Miniature Pinschers are for experienced dog owners. Many people underestimate the care, time, and effort needed in order to raise a Miniature Pinscher. The Miniature Pinscher is an assertive, outgoing, active, and independent breed. Miniature pinschers are energetic and need a fenced yard to run in. They are good watchdogs, as they are alert and wary of strangers. Miniature Pinschers are a stubborn breed when it comes to training, but once trained they will obey commands well.

SIBLING

CONTINUED FROM FRONT Following her death, the Pleasants family and Jamestown Presbyterian Church Session established a scholarship from memorial contributions. Abigail Salthouse, a former recipient and recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, presented this year’s award. “I was honored to present this scholarship as it provides an opportunity for members of our church to achieve their goals and dreams,” Salthouse said. “This scholarship allowed me to do just that, along with joining the other esteemed men and women who have come before me. I was thrilled to be able to pass along this amazing opportunity.” Johnson, the daughter of Christopher and Karen Johnson, recently graduated from Ragsdale High School. While at Ragsdale she was an honor student and served as chief junior marshal in 2021. She was a member of the varsity volleyball team where she was senior captain and was awarded All-Conference player twice. She was an assistant athletic trainer. Johnson also served on the student council, was president of the Peer Tutoring Club and Latin Club, National Honor

Society member, Certified Nursing Assistant and member of the Health Occupations Students of American. Active in a variety of projects through the church’s youth group, Johnson especially enjoyed the ones that allowed her to talk to and see the expressions of those impacted. “(Helping others) has produced a deep sense of gratitude within me and a stronger calling to spend my life helping others,” Johnson said. She plans to attend Wake Forest University in the fall and pursue a major in the health science field. “As someone who has always had a passion for the medical field and helping others, I am beyond excited to see what other exciting opportunities wait for me at Wake Forest,” she said. For additional information about the Lane Pleasants Memorial Scholarship, contact the church at 336-454-3718. Contributions to the scholarship can be made by check to the Jamestown Presbyterian Church, earmarked for the Pleasants Memorial Fund. Mail to the church at 1804 Guilford College Road, Jamestown NC 27282.
