Council has shorter agenda for July By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Those expecting to learn of yet another round of public hearings regarding D.R. Horton and the development agreement will have to wait until September. In June, the Jamestown Town Council voted to give the company three more months to agree to an acceptable development agreement. Instead of a 4-hour meeting like the June meeting, the July 19 meeting does not appear to be as long. The Council is expected to consider several proposals. One is the adoption of the Americans with Disabilities Act Plan. This was first discussed in June, but several councilmembers had questions as the plan was presented. The plan went back to Withers Ravenel, a civil and environmental engineer-

ing firm, for revision or clarification. The 641-page document outlines how the Town handles residents and visitors with disabilities. There are some problem areas that are barriers such as sidewalks, curb ramps, signage, pedestrian signals, accessible parking and crosswalks, among others. Things that are rarely considered by many would be location of paper towel dispensers and hand dryers in restrooms, missing grab bars, how doors swing, maneuverable spaces. Some areas, like the Jamestown Public Library, do not have to be ADA compliant because they are of historic significance. Finance Director Judy gallman will present for approval a Capital Project Ordinance for the Penny Road sidewalk. The Council will consider approval of a special event

permit for the Jamestown Rotary Christmas Parade. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has offered a donation of property at 6007 West gate City Boulevard. This approximately 3.44-acre property is vacant and was once the location of Sedgefield Baptist Church. It is across from guilford Memorial Park and west of both the Villas at Sedgefield and grandover Village Shopping Center. The Council will discuss accepting the donation. Following the regular session, the Council will go into closed session to discuss a personnel matter. The Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center at Town Hall. It may be viewed live at www.youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC and also will be available after the meeting. Planning Board again discusses auman rezoning By CaROL BROOKs FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com What, if anything, will happen to the Auman property on Harvey Road? Will the property become a townhome community? The Jamestown Planning Board will consider this at their July 18 meeting. The meeting is a public hearing that was continued from June 13 for an amendment to the Land Development Ordinance changing the zoning of 4718 Harvey Road from Agricultural (Ag) to Conditional ZoningBypass (CZ-B). The parcel, known as the Auman property, is approximately 31.4 acres and is across the street from the entrance to Jamestown Middle and HaynesInman schools. The Jamestown Bypass, currently under construction, abuts the northern side of the property. Windsor Homes Land Acquisition and Development Services, LLC, made the request for the property owners, Sherril and Kitsie Auman, who live in Dallas, Texas. Windsor is proposing 86 townhomes with attached two-car garages and the potential for an approximately 2.5-acre commercial portion fronting Harvey Road. All but six of the townhomes would be on a new road to be constructed west of Harvey Road, between Hethwood Drive and Haynes Road on the eastern side. Since the southern portion of the property is a watershed area with an unnamed tributary, there will be no construction here. Therefore, more than double the number of trees will remain than is required in the Land Development Ordinance. see PLannIng, PAGe 2

Former resident takes Frisbee to new level at World Games

When Claire Chastain first learned about Ultimate Frisbee she thought it was not a sport at all. She soon found it was not only a sport, but a highly athletic one as well. growing up participating in Little League softball and soccer, she later played lacrosse at Ragsdale High School where she graduated in 2008. She first started playing Ultimate Frisbee as a freshman at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

“My lacrosse team meant so much to me in high school, I thought nothing could compare to that,” she said. “Even though my sister, Morgan, played ultimate at her college, I just wrote it off.” After seeing a flyer about Ultimate Frisbee in her dorm and learning a hall mate was going to participate, Chastain decided she would try it also. “I am a pretty good athlete, but Ultimate Frisbee is so technically challenging,” Chastain said. “The challenge is what captured my interest. I like everything about ultimate — throwing, running, moving

quickly, keeping the defense on its toes.” During her senior year, Chastain received the Callahan Award, presented annually to the most valuable male and female players in college ultimate, not only for their skill and sportsmanship, but also for their leadership and dedication to the sport. Dedication could be considered a byword when it comes to Chastain’s complete change of opinion about Ultimate Frisbee. She played several club seasons with the Raleigh see gaMes, PAGe 6

Junior Home Run Derby champ seeks travel funds for team Ryan Hendricks is on a roll – and he hopes to continue his success. Hendricks has qualified to participate in Major League Baseball’s Junior Home Run Derby on July 16 in Los Angeles, one of eight chosen in the 14U age range. The event will take place during the 2022 AllStar game weekend at Dodger Stadium. “The prize for winning was an allexpenses-paid trip to L.A. for him and a guardian to participate in nationals and see the MLB Home Run Derby in person,” his mother Amanda said recently. There’s one problem, however. “Because it’s such an expensive trip, we are unable to take the rest of the family,” Amanda said.

Ryan’s baseball team, which plays at Johnson Street Park, is the 13U High Point Pony recreational little league baseball team that is through High Point Parks & Recreation. The team set up a fundraiser to send not only Ryan’s family, but the entire club to the Home Run Derby. (See sidebar.) “His baseball team is trying to raise funds to attend with us and to cheer him on,” Amanda said. “His baseball team has been vital in shaping the player and man he is becoming. It’s worth noting Ryan has no men in his life and these coaches have gone above and beyond to be the male figures he needs in every regard.” “I said, ‘are we crazy’ or ‘we are crazy’ for thinking we can work out going to support Ryan as a team,” said Coach Phillip Merritt. “Yes, we are just enough crazy see deRBy, PAGe 2

The Junior Home Run Derby will be held July 18, the day before the MLB All-Star Game and the team is rushing to raise funds for plane tickets. The High Point Pony Baseball Club originally estimated about $24,000 was needed in order for family and teammates to attend, but has reduced the figure to $12,000. Some funding came from the High Point Pony, Inc. non-profit league. To make a donation, visit https://go.rallyup. com/highpointpony13umlballstartrip or highpointpony.com and click on the donations link. You may also contact Shawn Hosier, president of High Point Pony, at 336-847-5581 or president. hppony@gmail.com; or Phillip Merritt, head coach of the 13-and-under club, at 336-416-5280 or apanelessperfection@gmail.com.

continued from front to try to send nine more boys and three coaches to Los Angeles for the trip of a lifetime. Honestly, these kids need a special trip and a break unlike no other and we are trying our best to make this happen for them.” The 13-year-old rising eighth-grader from Jamestown is homeschooled and began playing T-ball at age 4 or 5. He played other sports but baseball has claimed his heart. Merritt has coached Ryan for several years and says he has natural gifts with hand-eye coordination, timing and power that are unique at his age. “Most importantly, he has a calmness and confidence in the most challenging situ-

ations and that pays dividends when the game is on the line,” Merritt said. “He bats clean-up for me and mostly pitches and catches. Ryan won the local qualifier recently at the Greensboro Grasshoppers’ stadium, then went on to win the regional June 25 at the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers’ stadium. “We are all of course super-excited and proud,” said High Point Pony president Shawn Hosier. “This player will be representing High Point Pony and High Point at this MLB/ESPN event. I cannot be more proud of him. “Ryan is an excellent example to put forth for our league. He is a humble

young man who loves baseball.” During the Junior Home Run Derby, participants swing at balls thrown from a pitching machine. The outfield fence depth varies according to age. Youngsters are not expected to hit to a professional baseball outfield fence. Each batter is given 25 swings or 3 minutes to hit as many home runs as possible. Ryan’s best is 14 home runs in three minutes. “We are so appreciative and excited for the prize,” Amanda said and she hopes other family members and teammates can attend the Derby to see him go for the chance to be crowned the home run king.

planning continued from front If a commercial section is added, it would be limited to a post office, medical-type office, professional office, financial institution, florist/gift shop or hardware store. Fast-food businesses are not allowed. Members of the public who spoke at the June meeting cited that Harvey Road is already congested during school drop-off and pick-up hours at Jamestown Middle and Haynes-Inman schools. It might be noted that Harvey Road is also traveled by Ragsdale High School parents and students. Since the development is targeted toward empty nesters, it is believed those people will not be going into traffic at peak school hours. However, there is no guarantee that only empty nesters will be the occupants. The term “empty nester” does not necessarily apply to retirees and some may still be using Harvey Road to get to jobs. Although town staff has recommended the rezoning, there was much discussion

among Planning Board members who also were concerned about the traffic. Members could not make a decision in June and asked for the public hearing continuation. “There are nearly 4,000 daily trips along Harvey Road,” said Anna Hawryluk, town planner, of the area between Vickrey Chapel and Oakdale roads. “This project is expected to add 500 trips if it is residential and up to 843 if there is a commercial component.” Since the result would be over 4,000 daily trips, the North Carolina Department of Transportation requires a traffic impact analysis. If the rezoning request passes, the Town Council will also hear an annexation request for the property. A sewer easement will be required. The Planning Board will meet in the Civic Center at Town hall July 18 at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

continued from front Phoenix team and after graduating from college she moved to Colorado where she is captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team Denver Molly Brown. Chastain plays point offense, a position called handler. She also coaches ultimate at the University of Colorado and her team, Quandry, has the longest winning streak, going to College Nationals each year. Since college graduation, she has represented the United States four times on various National teams. She is ranked second of the top 10 players worldwide and is currently participating with a mixed team of men and women on Team USA in the World Games in Birmingham, Ala. The opening ceremony for the eight teams participating was held July 7. “I got chills watching it,” said Shanna Moore, Chastain’s mother. “It was a demonstration of the potential for this becoming an Olympic sport.” Moore and her older daughter have since joined Chastain in person in Birmingham to enjoy the World Games. “I like the camaraderie of the team members and the sportsmanship,” Moore said. “The sport is exciting.” The history of ultimate dates back to the late 1960s and early ’70s. Before that time similar games called Frisbee football were played using a flying disc. In 1966, Jared Kass and fellow Amherst students began to

play games that would be called ultimate. Kass taught his game at a summer camp and one camper, Joel Silver, brought the idea for the game — somewhat as a joke — to students at Columbia High School in New Jersey. The first game was played between the student council and the school newspaper staff. By 1970, the first set of written rules and the name Ultimate Frisbee was documented. New Jersey high school graduates begin organizing and promoting games of ultimate at their respective universities. Leagues began to form throughout the United States and Canada and in 1983 the first World Ultimate Championship was held in Gothenburg, Sweden. The sport continued to grow and in 2015, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) granted full recognition to the World Flying Disc Federation. The sport is eligible for the Olympics in 2028.* What began as camp recreation and a high school anti-sports joke turned into a popular sport that today has worldwide recognition and participation. Chastain is passionate about the sport and about gender equality. As a middle school special education teacher, she can see a correlation between giving opportunities to everyone for sports and for education. Her goal is to continue to promote Ultimate Frisbee, providing meaning playing opportunities for girls and

to make sure there are also equal opportunities in education for her students. “It is important to level the playing field, no matter what you are involved in,” she said. Although Chastain prefers to play on a woman’s ultimate team she is excited about participating on the mixed team at the World Games as she has done in the past. “There are usually mixed teams at the higher levels,” Chastain explained. “I have found men usually have a high respect for women on the team. “It is not about who is the tallest, can run the fastest or jump the highest. islature to modify the centuries-old definition of nuisance retroactively to prevent the lawsuits from ever reaching a jury. Notwithstanding these headwinds, Mona and her cocounsel persisted, bringing five cases to trial and winning five plaintiffs’ verdicts.” Of course, Wallace could not have done the whole thing by herself. Lawyers and paralegals interviewed people who had been impacted by the hog farming, mostly people whose homes were nearby, mostly in Duplin, Bladen, Pender, and Sampson Counties. They did the research and drafted motions and briefs. And Wallace engaged a talented and energetic co-counsel, Mike Kaeske, a Texas lawyer with working class roots. Kaeske handled the trial witness presentations, cross examinations and, most important, opening and closing arguments, for which he spent hundreds of hours in preparation and practice. All the work paid off in trials in a Federal District Court, but the defendant appealed the verdict to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Although one judge dissented, the panel of three judges, including conservative J. Harvie Wilkinson, voted to assure Smithfield’s loss. Addison noted that Wilkinson, in a concurring opinion, wrote “with Mosaic thunder,” saying that the Smithfield group’s “interference with their quiet enjoyment of their properties was unreasonable. It was willful, and it was wanton.” For Smithfield, Addison writes, the ruling was a devastating blow. Its public relations team launched a preemptive strike in an attempt to stanch the bleeding. Its press release “then regurgitates the same warmed-over pablum that the hog barons have served up for more than a generation--that no one understands the industry, that all the negative media and lawsuits and jury verdicts are biased and unfair, that Smithfield cares about farmers, and that it is committed to feeding the world.” But writes Addison, “The press release, however, is not just propagandistic. It contains a nugget of news: ‘We have resolved these cases through a settlement that will take into account the divided decision of the court. Information about the terms of the settlement will not be disclosed.’” Unfortunately, the book ends on this note, leaving the reader to guess how much more Smithfield had to pay to each plaintiff and whether the settlement will significantly change Smithfield’s methods. Still, the book has gained national attention, including a detailed review in the July 10 edition of The New York Times Book Review. Stay tuned. The hog wars are not over.

play like the men, we play like women, but we show that women have the skills needed too. It takes lots of athleticism. “I play how I know the game should be played — with respect,” she added. Chastain would love to see interest in Ultimate Frisbee grow. Including clubs, ultimate can pretty much be a year-round sport. “It is gaining in popularity, and is getting bigger in the Triangle areas,” she said. “That is exciting, but I would also like to see it in smaller areas and high schools.” (*Much of the history timeline is courtesy of discsportshistory.com.)

Rules of the game

The field size is officially 70 yards by 40 yards, with end zones 25 yards deep. Although smaller than a football or soccer field, it is a fairly large. Points are scored by getting the disc to one of your players in the end zone by passing it through the air. Games are won when a certain number of points are reached or when a team has the most points within a set time, whichever comes first. Play starts by a “pull,” where one side throws-off to the other. Players cannot run with the disc and must stop as soon as they receive it, although they may pivot on one leg. A player in possession has 10 seconds in which to pass the disc or they loose possession to the opposition. The defender makes the count. If a pass hits the ground, is intercepted or is caught out of bounds possession goes to the other side. Substitutions can only be made after a goal has been scored and before the throw-off, to replace an injured player or after periods of play. Physical contact is not allowed between players, and this includes picks or screens. Defenders may only stand within three meters of the disc-holder. When contact is made a foul occurs. The player who is fouled is responsible for calling it. This is done by shouting “foul” to alert the players on the field. If there are disputes, they must be resolved by the players themselves (or occasionally by an official “observer”). Because ultimate is self-officiating, Spirit of the Game — sportsmanship and fair play — is the most important rule. Competitive play is never at the expense of following the rules, respecting other players, and having fun.
