Creative art transfers to income BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com When someone thinks of mosaic it is likely as an artistic technique that uses tiny parts to create a whole image or object. But Mosaic: A Lifespan Studio encompasses much more. This studio allows local individuals with special needs – called resident artists – to participate in craft sessions several times a week under the guidance of artists and assistants. “The main criteria is that a person loves art and wants to do it,” said Dawn Ashby Caldwell, senior director of art and entertainment for Lifespan in Guilford County. “They come to the studio two or three days a week from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. to create art projects of their choice, including such
things as pottery, painting, jewelry and mosaic artwork.” Participants, who range in age from about 19 to 60, can pick and choose to work on what they do best and what they most enjoy doing. Pottery seems to be a favorite art form for many, who often craft seasonal items. Their art is sold in a variety of venues including gift shops and galleries in 10 area loca-

Jamestown Finance Director Gallman has received an award for financial reporting achievement for the Finance Department for the Town. She has received this award numerous times in the past. To show the appreciation of the Council, Councilmember Martha Wolfe presented Gallman with a trophy recognizing her as “World’s Greatest Financial Director 2021 and Beyond.”
Challengers speak out on why they want to serve Jamestown Challengers to the mayoral and Town Council seats in Jamestown offer their views on why they are running. Responses from the incumbents appeared in the July 21 Jamestown News. Robert Frederick, 48, mayoral candidate I’m running for mayor of Jamestown because I want to tap into our community’s expertise, capacity and wisdom so that “we” can govern ourselves extremeRobert Frederick ly well. I believe Jamestown’s mayor’s role requires understanding what’s going on throughout our community, so that “We the People” are not only well-represented by our at-large Council members but that the mayor can help Council prioritize what “we” the people need and want. If elected mayor, I will: – Identify, encourage, and help community members present their ideas directly
to Council of what they need and/or want to do to improve their lives in Jamestown; – Identify, encourage and help local business owners and employees present their ideas directly to Council of what they need and/or want to do to improve their business opportunities in Jamestown; – Run public hearings so that they are truly about hearing from the public, meaning not calling for Council to vote about any matter on the same day as a public hearing … so that Council shows up to public hearings ready to listen rather than ready to vote; – Highlight to Council the issues and ideas from people of “all” of Jamestown’s neighborhoods and surrounding community until Council addresses them, including long-neglected issues such as smart and sustainable growth and development plans, the disrupted sleep of many hundreds of our town’s citizens and community members by regular noise issues that can be silenced, long-promised sidewalks connecting all people from all neighborhoods to the town’s center so people do not have to walk in the streets to get to the grocery store, water runoff issues that swamp yards and cause basement issues for those in older houses around new developments, the travel of industrial trucks and speeding cars through neighborhoods despite signs banning trucks and posted speeding limits, etc. …;
– Call on Council to reduce property taxes; – Solicit community involvement in the further development of a vision for Jamestown that is inclusive and beneficial to all people in our community. I aim to do my best to enable We the People to rule in Jamestown, too, and will as mayor encourage our at-large Council members to do their best to represent all of our people’s interests. Michael Young, mayoral candidate (Mr. Young did not respond.)
Dave Cohan, Town Council candidate I’ve lived in Jamestown for 23 years now enjoying all this beautiful town has to offer. It’s time I give something back – my time, experience, educaDave Cohan tion – to help keep Jamestown one of the most livable places in North Carolina. I’d like to see a change in the budgeting process so that the budget reflects actual expenses and does not result in a continu-

ing surplus. This would allow for a reduction in at least the Jamestown portion of our property tax burden. I’d like the Town to have a plan in place for the growth it would like to see (or not see) especially in the Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction areas such as the Johnson Farm property. This would let potential developers know what is deemed acceptable to the Town before proposing zoning changes. I’d also like to see a plan to attract more visitors to the downtown area, which would include expanding available parking, advertising, and incentivizing new businesses to move into vacant properties.
Darren Myers, 51, Town Council candidate Though I got my B.A. in political science, I’ve never had an interest in running for elected office until now. I feel like Jamestown is at an inflection point Darren Myers and I would like to offer a new voice and fresh perspective in shaping the town for the future. SPEAK
CONTINUED FROM FRONT of the answers (or even know all of the questions for that matter) but I want to do whatever I can now to help Jamestown continue to be a great place to live, work and for kids to grow up as we enter this era of what is likely to be exponential growth. I’d like to think I’m a pretty good listener, enjoy the collaborative process and am a creative problem solver – all of which I think will be assets to the town council. My candidacy is really more driven by my concern for and interest in the future of Jamestown. If there’s anything I’ve learned over the last 18 months or so it is that there’s a great deal of interest in and opportunity for growth in and around Jamestown. I believe how that growth is managed and implemented is crucial and I don’t feel like I should stand by and not get involved. I’ve worked in technology for the past 25 years or so and I’ve seen and been involved in using data to identify trends, new insights and improve efficiency within a variety of different organizations. I’d
like to offer some of that experience to the Town of Jamestown as I believe there’s always room for improvement. I want to also make sure that the Town of Jamestown is able to attract and retain all of the skilled, talented and committed employee/public servants as possible – you can never have too many good people. I also think we can find better ways to communicate, interact, improve transparency and get more people involved – be that through technology or just devoting time to sit down and talk. Not every issue (in fact, I believe most) can be summed up in 280 characters or less. I generally believe that the more informed and involved people are in self-government the better. We have to find a way to address the school overcrowding in the Jamestown schools (even though it’s not technically the town’s responsibility). Guilford County Schools has made it abundantly clear (at least in my mind) that they don’t have a plan that’s going to substantively
address the problem for any of the kids currently enrolled in the Jamestown schools. I think the town needs to explore some options that might be a little bit out of the box while continuing to work with GCS. My wife and I used to be avid cyclists – fundraising for the MS Society and riding in the Tour to Tanglewood for a number of years – and I’d like to find some ways to make the town more bike- (and pedestrian-) friendly. Between the amount of traffic and the epidemic of distracted driving, I am very concerned about the safety of anyone riding a bike on the main roads in town. As someone who loves history, I’d love to be involved in the expansion of historic designations and revitalization of Oakdale Mill and Village and have some experience with what “good” looks like in this regard. We have a great downtown with enormous potential and I’d like to find some ways to make it more attractive for local businesses and for ways to draw people to come and experience it.
Al Stewart, 70, Town Council candidate Jamestown is a great example of a quiet, friendly place to live and raise a family. I would like to preserve all that is good about Jamestown and promote conAl Stewart trolled growth and economic development. I am a novice in politics and there are others who know a great deal more about Jamestown than I, however there is always a need for fresh eyes and ideas. I participated in the Jamestown walkaround event a couple of years ago and heard a lot of ideas for the future. I would like to see some of these suggestions implemented. Jamestown needs to capitalize on the wonderful history and make the age and history of the town a calling card.
MONEY
CONTINUED FROM FRONT ed $25,500, for a total of $49,045. However, the Town’s recreation programs budget is only $25,000. “We recommend that we contract for recreation services in the amount budgeted ($25,500) and allocated between JYL and the YMCA based on the percentage that was paid out in fiscal year 2020-21,” said Gallman. “Thus, JYL would receive $10,710 (42 percent) and the YMCA would
receive $14,790 (58 percent). Half of these amounts would be paid in advance and, based on number of Jamestown participants, the remainder could be paid out upon documentation of participation by Jamestown residents.” Gallman added that the Jamestown Public Library has requested $54,000 for library services for the 2021-22 fiscal year. review changes resulting from new planning laws in Chapter 160D of the North Carolina General Statutes. Treme hopes to hire a community planning firm with experience in architecture and design to work as an advocate for the citizens of Jamestown and the Council in matters relating to future development, especially the Johnson property along Guilford College and Mackay roads. With the anticipated growth of the town, Treme has approved a request from the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department to contribute 50 percent, or $2,897.50, for the preparation of a fire district location plan. “We’re not waiting for [growth] to happen, then figure it out,” Treme said. As to a possible re-location of the Jamestown fire station based on growth, Treme added, “It might be right where it is now. It could be somewhere else.” Fire Chief Derek Carson
added this would be a twothree month study. Treme noted that he hopes to be able to open the bidding for the planned Recreation Maintenance Facility on the site of the old fairgrounds on East Fork Road in September. Treme reported that the Town of Jamestown would again be a pacesetter for the United Way campaign this year. He added that by seeking competitive quotes, the Town has saved nearly $50,000 on workers compensation insurance by changing to the North Carolina League of Municipalities plan. Following the regular session, the Council went into closed session to discuss matters related to personnel and attorney-client privilege regarding Lori Herron (2216 Guilford College Road) vs. Town of Jamestown. No further business was conducted when the Council returned to regular session.

Couch Theatre BY RACHEL ROSE Dragging the Classics: The Brady Bunch — When producers randomly pull actor names and potential situations out of a hat and mash them together, here is the result. Three original cast members of the classic 1970s sitcom teamed up with drag queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race to precisely re-create a “Brady Bunch” episode. Yes, it’s corny. Yes, the actors are long in the tooth to be playing teenagers, and their acting is a little stiff. But for lifelong “Bunch” fans, this is guilty pleasure. Costumes are accurate, set design is perfect, and drag queens Kylie Sonique Love and Kandy Muse provide hilarious yet sincere perspectives to playing Jan and Cindy Brady. (Paramount+)
The Artist (PG-13) — New this week to Hulu’s current offerings is the 2012 Academy Awardwinner for Best Picture. Starring Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo, this French comedy-drama is a tribute to the magic of the silent-film era of Hollywood. Set from 1927-1932, the plot revolves around an older silent-film star who has a chance meeting with an upand-coming starlet whose career he then helps propel. Filmed in black-and-white, and largely silent except for the musical score, The Artist also won Oscars for costume design and original score. It is a throwback to an almost forgotten style of movie, and a welcome change from the modern. (Hulu)

Grieving cats unite after losing brothers BY SAM MAZZOTTA PAW'S CORNER DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to share a tale of two cats. One is “Bean,” a chocolate Burmese. Bean had a brother, “Coco.” I purchased the two of them when they were kittens. Sadly, Coco passed away at age 3 from cancer. Bean grieved for a very long time. A few months ago, I met someone in an online group who also had two Burmese cats, and one of them passed away. The surviving cat, “Storm,” was inconsolable. Like Bean, she roamed her house day and night, meowing for her brother to reappear. Storm’s owner had health issues and was looking to place her in a new home. I had a feeling that together we could help both of these grieving cats. But cats, especially adult cats, often do not get along — especially when one is introduced into the other’s home. However, both cats were fixed, which
helps reduce territorialism and aggression, among other problems. We both agreed to a two-week trial; if the cats were too stressed out or fought, then it was a no-go. Fortunately, after a cautious sniffing-out period during their introduction, Bean and Storm snuggled right up together. They have been buddies ever since. Neither of them goes meowing around at night. Bean and Storm are a new family, and they couldn’t be happier. Thought I would share! — Dana A., via email DEAR DANA: Thank you for a heartwarming story! You did the right thing by setting up a trial period, because cats that don’t like each other may escalate aggression with each encounter, and the trauma is bad for both. But it sounds like Bean and Storm have settled in nicely. Congratulations! Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. ©2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Caldwell, who has a degree in fine arts and psychology, and her assistant Shantae Mann help the artists with their creative process. “We find out where they are starting and work toward getting them where they want to be,” Caldwell said. Before Covid closed the facility, approximately 20 artists participated in the program. Caldwell hopes to have the art studio, which is part of Lifespan, open again in September.
