Council wants ball fields to remain The Jamestown Town Council received the proposed $45 million Jamestown Park and Golf Course Master Plan at the June 16 meeting. After having a month to review the plan, a vote was expected at the July 21 meeting. However, there was one portion of the plan the Council was unanimous in its dislike –

removal of the ball fields. But the fields would not leave Jamestown completely. Diamondback Investment Group offered to construct ball fields as part of their development of the Johnson property on Guilford College and Mackay roads. Diamondback has not submitted plans for the development yet so Council requested an alternative to the proposed Master Plan that leaves the ball fields on the East Fork Road site.

In-person comp plan meetings scheduled By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Like many things, initial plans for determining what Jamestown residents want in the new comprehensive plan have been derailed due to COVID-19. But the Steering Committee has come up with a way so some in-person groups could meet – using social distancing, of course. Benchmark Consulting will hold in-person small group community discussions at Town Hall on Aug. 8 and 12. There is also an online option available Aug. 11 and 13. Each session will be approximately 50 minutes long, and will focus on receiving direct input from the community about the future of Jamestown. Each group will be limited to six participants and seating will be arranged in the meeting rooms to maximize distance between participants while allowing for conversation and an exchange of ideas. To sign up, visit https://www.envisionjamestown.com. The information gathered in these meetings will be used in conjunction with that received in a survey earlier this year. The document will act as a guide for land use, development, capital investments and growth management decisions for the next decade and beyond.

Board approves variance By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com It only took the Jamestown Board of Adjustment 17 minutes to approve a variance request for 213 Knollwood Dr. The applicant, Matt Lothakoun, requested a reduction of the setback from 25 ft. to 10 ft. to add an 8 ft.-deep deck spanning the back of his house. The town’s Land Development ordinance normally requires a minimum rear setback of 25 ft. According to the plot plan, the existing house already encroaches into the required setback by 7 feet. However, the house was built around 1955, nine years before the earliest zoning ordinances for the Town. According to Planning Director Matthew Johnson, a variance remedy exists to permit owners the right to vary from the strict application of the ordinance when it is believed that health, safety and welfare would not be adversely affected. He believes neither health, safety nor welfare would be adversely affected and that this variance would be consistent with the spirit, purpose and intent of the ordinance. The shallow lot abuts Arnold Koonce City Lake. Lothakoun was the only person to speak during the public comment portion of the meeting. Board member Eddie Oakley voted in favor of the variance, stating it could only help the property and surrounding property. The vote was unanimous.

“It’s not logical to leave them out now,” said Councilmember Martha Wolfe who, as mayor pro tem, presided in the absence of Mayor Lynn Montgomery. “I’m concerned about taking ball fields out altogether,” added Councilmember Rebecca Rayborn. “There’s no way I’d be for anything that would take away a ball field,” agreed Councilmember Lawrence Straughn. “We could work on the drainage problem and

replace the lights [on the existing fields].” “So much is up in the air,” said Councilmember John Capes regarding not knowing Diamondback’s plans. “The option of moving [the fields] to the Johnson property came up after the recreation plan study began,” said Planning Director Matthew Johnson. “Diamondback would build on the town’s specs and then give the fields to the town.” Johnson said renovation

of the existing fields is possible but the main reason for the plan is to receive Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant funding. However, PARTF will not fund renovations. He added that once the Master Plan is approved, no work would begin for probably a year or more and the work would be done in pieces, not all at once. With the added amenities, the Town could need to establish a Parks and

Recreation Department. The Jamestown Youth League uses the fields for practice but plays games elsewhere due to the condition of the fields and the lack of lighting. “We’ve dropped the ball and let the fields go,” Straughn said. Rayborn asked if there was a way in the plan to show that the ball fields could be a possibility. SEE FIELdS, PAGe 2

Replacement for lost pin equally special By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Since 2008, no matter what Donna Turner was wearing, she adorned it with the same small pin. Of course, it was not any ordinary pin, but a President’s Volunteer Service Award she had received from President George W. Bush. He presented it to her for volunteering more than 25,000 hours with Hospice of the Piedmont. When President Bush landed at Piedmont Triad International Airport, he met Turner as she rolled out to the tarmac in her wheelchair and stood to greet him. Afterwards Turner noted that it was an honor to meet the President and to receive the award. A story about the occasion appeared in a local paper. Turner started her Hospice work in 1983. She began by working on mailings for the group. She later made sure all patient files were updated, helped organize a Ladies’ PGA Tournament fundraiser and sought donations through telephone solicitations. “When Mom met someone they became a friend,” said her daughter Terri Koontz. “She also had lots of professional relationships and did not mind seeking donations from them for Hospice. She continued to volunteer for Hospice after she received her pin and even made phone calls for the group for two years after she moved to Pen-

nybyrn in 2010. However the pin, which Turner received for her volunteer efforts and that meant so much to her, was misplaced earlier this year. After an intensive search of Turner’s room, the backing was found, but never the pin. It was concluded that after years of use the pin came off the backing and was inadvertently discarded. “Mom was devastated,” Koontz said. “Her sitters told us she could not sleep for worrying about the pin.” Turner’s son, Craig, called the White House to explain the situation and see if his mother could get a replacement. Craig was given the number of the President’s Volunteer Service Award department in Atlanta, Ga. Not only was a pin mailed to Koontz, who lives locally, but a medallion was included in the package for her mother. Because of restrictions due to COVID-19, none of Turner’s children, which also include daughter Nancy Draughan, were able to see her get the pin. “But I gave it to a sitter right away so Mom could have it,” Koontz said. “Mom was on cloud nice for several days. I gave the medallion to Vonda Hollingsworth (vice president at Pennybyrn) and she offered to make sure Mom received it at a special celebration. Since family members could not be present, Jennifer

donna Turner, above, shows the medallion she received along with a replacement pin, which recognized 25,000 hours volunteer service. Although her volunteer work was not done for recognition, the pin Turner received for doing it is especially meaningful to her. The Sweet Shop Bakery in High Point created a cake featuring the same design as Turner’s pin.

Poston anxious to defend at Sedgefield By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com It was a different kind of Wyndham Championship media day on July 21. Normally, the day starts with a round of golf for those who wanted to play Sedgefield Country Club, followed by lunch in the clubhouse. Then, Tournament Director Mark Brazil would say a few words before he and the media interviewed a guest PGA player – often the defending champion. This year there was no golf and no lunch. Brazil still spoke, but from his home, as did last year’s winner J.T. Poston. Media were able to ask questions via Zoom. Earlier, the PGA Tour announced the SEE SEdgEFIELd, PAGe 2

Good Housekeeping Strawberry Ice Cream Making your own ice cream is easier than you think — especially when it doesn’t require a fancy machine. This delectable four-ingredient treat whips up in 10 minutes flat and freezes into scoopable sweetness in an hour. With a mere 70 calories per serving and less than 1/2 gram of saturated fat, go ahead: Spoon up some more.

3. Cover and freeze about 1 hour, until firm but not hard. Garnish with strawberries. Yields 7 (1/2-cup) servings. TIP: You can substitute plain low-fat yogurt for the Greek yogurt. We found both worked well, but we preferred Greek yogurt’s creamier texture. Freezing time may vary depending on freezer make and model. Begin checking your ice cream at 1 hour, and continue freezing if you prefer a firmer texture.

sedgefield continued from front Wyndham would be played without spectators, as would the remaining PGA and FedEx Cup playoff season. This year’s tournament will not allow family members to accompany the players. “It’s been heartbreaking,” said Brazil on media day, “but it’s better than not having live golf. “It’s going to be extremely odd walking around with no fans.” Brazil was disappointed fans would not be able to see the new short game practice area that is being installed beside the clubhouse. He said the area would be ready come tournament time. Poston’s 22-under bogey-free victory in 2019 just edged out 2011 champion Webb Simpson, who shot 21-under. His final round 62 tied the lowest final round score set by Davis Love III in 1992 and since equaled by seven other players. Poston joined a long line of players whose first professional win came at the Wyndham Championship. His best finish this year came at the RBC Heritage where he tied for eighth. The 27-year old Western Carolina graduate is currently 64th in the world ranking and 53 in the FedEx Cup rank. He is looking forward to his first time defending a title, but with no family and friends to support him this year, he wants to win again so he can experience defending next year.

“Last year I had a lot of family and friends cheering me on,” he said. “I definitely feel I feed off that energy.” His name was added to wall of champions outside the clubhouse, behind the 9th green. “It feels awesome,” Poston said of the honor. “One of the first things I’ll do when I get back [is look for it]. It will be there for the rest of history. “It’s a bummer not having fans out there, but once you start, there’s not much difference.” All PGA Tour players undergo COVID19 testing each week on Monday and players are not allowed to leave their hotel when not playing. “The golf course feels like the safest place you can be on earth,” Poston said. Brazil believes some big names will be attending the tournament, including former winners J.T. Poston (2019) Webb Simpson (2011), Brandt Snedeker (2007 and 2018), Arjun Atwal (2010) and Carl Pettersson, who won in 2008 the first year the tournament returned to Sedgefield. Along with Poston, who was born in Hickory, several other North Carolinians are expected to play. The Wyndham Championship will be held Aug. 13-16 at Sedgefield Country Club. It can be viewed on the Golf Channel Thursday-Sunday and on CBS Saturday and Sunday.

continued from front Balance, Pennybyrn’s life enhancement coordinator, arranged for Turner’s peers to be part of the occasion on July 10. Practicing social distancing did not keep everyone from enjoying the surprise, including a cake from the Sweet Shop Bakery and hors d’oeuvres compliments of Pennybyrn’s dining team. “Donna was the last to come into the room,” Balance said. “I explained to everyone about the pin she had received for her volunteer work with Hospice, its loss and replace-

ment. I told them Donna also had participated in the Meals on Wheels program through First United Methodist Church in High Point. “When we gave Donna the medallion, she was speechless, but her eyes sparkled.” “Obviously I was very surprised and grateful to be recognized,” Turner acknowledged. “I was just thrilled to get my pin back and the medallion was something new. I know it meant so much to my family, too.” When the celebration

concluded, Turner told Balance that she would never forget the day. “To hear her tell me that was so rewarding,” Balance said. Turner later asked Koontz what she planned to do with the pin when she passed away and Koontz posed the question right back to her mother. “Mom said she did not want to be buried with it. She decided it should go back to Hospice so it could inspire others. Volunteers make a difference. My mother is a special person.”

In the other direction, along Guilford Road, the one-mile route would be called the Arms Factory route, ending near the Confederate Arms Factory marker. Scott has spoken with Johnson and Recreation Supervisor Scott Coakley about the project and received their approval. No funds from the Town are needed because Scott is soliciting donations. The double-sized bricks have been ordered and should be installed by the end of August or early September. • The Council is considering changing the meeting time from 6:30 to 6 p.m. To do this, the Code of Ordinances and Rules of Procedure must be amended. A public hearing is scheduled for the Aug. 18 Town Council meeting. • The Council approved a budget amendment for rental of a sound system for July and August to be used for Council and other meetings as well as the purchase of a sound system. If ordered in July, the new system would be available for meetings in September.

“We need to show alternative uses and have a plan that includes ball fields,” said Capes. “We don’t have to do it immediately.” Johnson said he would contact McAdams Company to get another plan that would include the ball fields, as well as get a cost estimate for the work. The Council voted to continue the discussion at the August 18 meeting. In other business: • The Council saw a presentation of funding for library, recreation, and cultural and historical services. In previous years, non-profits requested funding, but now the Town must decide which organizations to provide services that the Town could provide if it had the resources. This year’s amount was the same as last year, with $52,000 going to the library, $25,250 to the YMCA and JYL (recreation), and $10,500 to the Historic Jamestown Society (cultural, historical). The Council unanimously approved the library amount and will vote on the remaining amounts at the August meeting. • Art Wise was honored for his service on the Planning Board from August 2010 to August 2020, serving as chair from 2015 to 2019. Dennis Sholl was appointed to fill the Planning Board vacancy once Wise retires and Jane Payne was appointed to serve as alternate. • Win Scott proposed his Eagle Scout project of adding mileage markers on the brick sidewalks for walkers, joggers and bikers. Overcome ‘fear of fish’ with this easy dish

(or a combination of both) 1 tablespoon orange juice or lemon juice

By angela shelf medearis the kitchen diva

I’ve found during my years of teaching adults how to cook that the thing they fear most (and ruin most often) is fish. My favorite fish recipe for novice cooks is Italian-Style Salmon cooked in the microwave. The microwave is the perfect way to cook seafood because it cooks food from the inside out and also creates steam, which keeps the fish moist. Salmon can be prepared in the microwave in just five minutes! If you’ve been afraid to venture out into the deep, start your voyage with salmon. It’s flavorful, versatile, easy to cook and a healthy source of protein. Salmon is low in mercury and high in omega-3 fatty acids. Eating two to three servings per week of foods rich in omega-3 is a healthy choice. While 80% of all of the salmon sold is farm-raised, wild salmon is the best option. A 4-ounce serving of wild salmon provides a full day’s requirement of vitamin D, and more than half of the necessary B-12, niacin and selenium. It’s an excellent source of B-6 and magnesium, too. Omega-3 fats also have been found to help slow cognitive problems such as Alzheimer’s disease and age-related mental decline, and reduce incidences of depression and aggression. Canned salmon has almost the same health benefits as fresh, and it’s inexpensive. Canned salmon is typically wild Alaskan salmon that is processed and packaged immediately onsite. Canned salmon also contains large amounts of calcium (due to the bones of

the fish, which are soft and easily digestible). Canned salmon is ready to eat and can be used in a variety of dishes from soups to stir-fry. Fresh salmon can be baked, broiled, grilled or pan-fried in 10 minutes or less. This recipe for Italian-Style Microwave Salmon is the perfect dish to conquer your “fear of fish.” Eat more salmon and ride the “wave” this summer by using your microwave to get in and out of the kitchen in record time! ITALIAN-STYLE MICROWAVE SALMON You can vary the flavor of this recipe by changing the type of olive oil-based salad dressing you use. Try substituting an Asian, citrus-flavored or honey-mustardbased oil dressing for the Italian dressing to create a flavorful new fish dish! 3 pounds salmon fillets with skin, thawed, washed and patted dry 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 cup Italian salad dressing 1/4 cup diced green or red bell peppers

1. Season both sides of the fillets with the poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Place the fillets in a shallow microwave-safe baking dish. Fold and tuck the narrow ends of the filets under to make the pieces uniform in shape. This will help the fish to cook evenly. Place the thickest pieces near the edge of the dish. 2. Using a small bowl, mix together the Italian dressing, bell peppers and orange or lemon juice. Pour dressing mixture over the fillets. Cover with microwavesafe plastic wrap. Fold back a small (1-inch) section of the plastic wrap in the corner of the dish to allow steam to vent. 3. Place a small, microwavesafe saucer, upside down, on the turntable in the microwave. Place the dish containing the fillets on top of the saucer to elevate the dish and ensure that the fish cooks evenly. Microwave for 4 to 5 minutes on High. Fish should be moist and flake easily. Serve immediately. Serves 6. Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian, and the author of seven cookbooks. Hammer natural prints with garden leaves By donna erickson Donna's Day: Creative Family Fun Green leaves just don’t get the attention they deserve. Usually, we “ooh” and “aah” in the fall at the emerging splashy colors of crimson and golden leaves on trees and bushes. But there is infinite variety in the green and the gray of those leaves on trees, vegetable plants and bushes that continually grow, shade and add a natural umbrella in gardens and parks in the hottest of summer days. Pick a handful of fresh leaves and sprouting greens from your trees, shrubs and vegetable garden, and look at them with your kids through a magnifying glass. Observe their intricate patterns and delicate design, and then print them onto fabric with a zany technique using a hammer from the toolbox and your child’s muscle and energy. First, collect the fresh green leaves. Ferns from an indoor floral bouquet also work well. Then, decide what you would like to print, such as a plain white or cream-colored cotton fabric T-shirt, an apron, potholder or library book bag. Cover a hard, flat surface such as a picnic table or wooden breadboard with plain paper bags. Set the fabric to be printed on top. If using a T-shirt or tote bag, place a sheet of wax paper or cardboard inside the shirt or bag. Arrange a leaf or fern on the fabric (secure it in place with small pieces of masking tape, if you wish), and cover with a sheet of wax paper. Hammer over the

wax-paper-covered leaf until its color has been absorbed into the fabric. It’s important that you hit every part of the leaf to release the natural pigments. Remove the leaf or fern and wax paper to reveal the natural image. Colors vary in intensity, so you may wish to test several varieties on a piece of scrap fabric first. Repeat the process with additional leaves. Try it with a few flowers, too, and see how the beautiful colors from nature appear. Label each print with the name of the tree, plant or flower using a permanent marker. Note: The natural pigments may eventually fade. Wash fabric in cold water. Extra Idea: You also may use paper instead of fabric to create lovely stationery, gift tags or bookmarks.
