Kim takes command at Wyndham for victory by carol brooKs FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com

Joo-hyung Kim found a new way to win a golf tournament this past weekend, but it’s not something that is recommended for everyone. On his very first hole of the 83rd Wyndham Championship on Thursday, Kim, who likes to go by Tom, had a quadruple bogey. That’s four shots over par. But he got the jitters out of the way and coasted to a Sunday victory, 20 under par and five shots better than his nearest competitors. In an interview following his victory, Kim said, “I can’t really believe it. I didn’t realize golf was so stressful before. I stayed very patient this week. After that quad I just laughed and let it go.” Let it go he did, needing only 27 shots on the front nine, tying two-time Wyndham champion Brandt Snedeker. This also ties the second-lowest nine-hole score in PGA Tour history.

Even veteran golf announcer Jim Nance was surprised. “You give away 4 shots on the first hole and you end up 4 shots in the lead,” Nance said, prior to Kim’s final birdie. He is only the second golfer to win on Tour in the last 40 years after making a quadruple bogey. Phil Mickelson did it in route to winning the 2009 Tour Championship. The 20-year-old South Korean’s victory makes him the first PGA Tour player born in this century. He becomes the second youngest winner on Tour after Jordan Spieth since 1931 and the youngest winner of this tournament, beating out 1978 champion Seve Ballesteros by one month. Not only did he earn PGA membership just last week, but with this victory, he earned a place in the FedEx Cup playoffs, which begin later this week. While the top of the leaderboard was bunched up most of the weekend, the outcome was less tense than last year’s Wyndham Championship, which ended in a sixman playoff, only the second in history.

Kevin Kisner came away with that victory but did not make the cut this year. It would not be the Wyndham Championship without at least one rain delay. This year saw three, two on Friday and one on Saturday, the latter leaving 68 of the 80 players still on the course. Several players, including Kim, had to finish the third round early this morning before they could begin the final round. As usual, Sedgefield Country Club received much praise for how the tournament was handled and the condition of the course. “The greens are perfect. Not a mark on them,” said announcer Trevor Immelman. “A shout out to Golf Course Superintendent Chad Comer.” “This [course] still remains more of a shot-maker’s golf course with a lot of blind tee shots, and shorter and tougher angles,” said 2009 champion Ryan Moore. “The Photo courtesy PGA Tour fairways are harder to hit at times, and you Joo-hyung Kim holds the sam snead can’t just send it down there as far as you cup after his victory in sunday’s possibly can every single hole.” Wyndham championship.

OPEN HOUSES AND OTHER SCHOOL NEWS On Aug. 29, more than 68,000 students on the traditional calendar will enter Guilford County schools and classrooms ready to begin the new school year. Before students return to class parents and families will have the opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and learn more about the upcoming year when they attend their school’s open house. The schedule is as follows: • High schools — Monday, Aug. 22 • Middle schools — Tuesday, Aug. 23 • Elementary schools — Wednesday, Aug. 24 Schools on non-traditional calendars that span multiple grade levels or serve special needs students may not follow this schedule. Parents should check with the individual schools for open house dates and times in those cases. GCS continues its ongoing work on security enhancements. Students attending the district’s comprehensive high schools will enter their school through touchless security scanners. Other safety enhancements will be added throughout the 20222023 school year. The federal program covering the costs of school meals has ended. Families will now need to apply online to receive free meals by visiting www.lunchapplication.com. The Here Comes the Bus app will go live on Aug. 29. 7TH AND 12TH GRADERS REQUIRED TO HAVE VACCINES The Guilford County Department of Public Health has scheduled several immunization clinics for students. State law requires 7th graders to have one dose of the Tdap and MCV vaccine, and 12th graders are required to have a booster dose of the MCV vaccine. If students do not show proof of the required vaccinations by the 30th day of school, they will risk being excluded from class. Vaccines and boosters are available at: • Greensboro Health Department, 1100 E. Wendover Avenue, Greensboro, 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, 22-25, 29 and Sept. 1. • High Point Health Department, 501 E. Green Drive, High Point, 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Aug. 11, 16, 22-25, 29 and Sept. 1. Regular clinic appointments are available from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (Monday through Friday). Call 336641-3245 to schedule. Students may also receive the proper immunizations by visiting their health care provider. GRANDOVER NOW PART OF WYNDHAM Grandover Resort and Spa is now a Wyndham Grand Hotel, part of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. The AAA Four-Diamond award-winning golf resort announced the union Aug. 2, prior to the start of the Wyndham Championship played at nearby Sedgefield Country Club. As a Wyndham Grand Hotel, Grandover joins nearly 70 upper-upscale hotels around the world. The resort features two 18-hole championship golf courses, spa, tennis courts, fitness center, fine dining and meeting space. Grandover Resort and Spa was developed and is managed by Koury Corporation.

Jamestown has yet another reason to make the area a destination location. As of June 28, a new restaurant opened at 727 W. Main Street (originally Penny’s Restaurant). Namaste Lumbini Restaurant & Bar specializes in authentic Indian, Napoli and Indo-Chinese cuisine. When thinking of a name for the restaurant, the staff wanted something that fit the type of food served. Namaste is a greeting in Nepal, much as Americans see cuisine, PAGE 2

Council to meet Aug. 18 by carol brooKs FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Council will hold its Aug. 18 meeting at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center at Town Hall. Agenda items include consideration of approval of a contract for services with both the Jamestown Public Library and the Historic Jamestown Society. The Town formerly considered

these contracts as non-profit grants. Since the Town Council changed the procedure for funding local organizations several years ago, essentially turning them into contractors — typically the Ragsdale YMCA, Jamestown Youth League, Jamestown Public Library and Historic Jamestown Society — the accounting method has become more strict, especially with the Y

and JYL. The Council now requests documentation as to the number of Jamestown participants in these programs and a low number of Jamestown participants could result in less-thanrequested funding. The Council expects to see contract requests from the YMCA and JYL in upcoming months. Also for consideration is a contract from Republic Waste for acceptance of

solid waste at their transfer station. Town Planner Anna Hawryluk will present a draft of the Comprehensive Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The meeting is open to the public and may also be viewed at www.youtube.com/c/ TownofJamestownNC. The Council will also meet Aug. 18 in a closed session to discuss a personnel matter.

tire store wins rezoning, gsO annexation by carol brooKs FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com

It looks like the Adams Farm area will be getting a tire store — and Greensboro getting more property — after the Greensboro City Council unanimously approved a Mavis Tire Supply, LLC, application for rezoning and annexation. The Council took less than five minutes to make their decision on both requests. In June, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the rezoning request. The annexation request only goes before the City Council. Mavis Discount Tire applied for the approximately 1.6-acre property at 5701 W. Gate City Blvd. to be rezoned from County Residential Single-Family to City Conditional District — Commercial Medium. Before the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, the company added several Photo courtesy Guilford Information Service (GIS) conditions to their original applica- rezoning and annexation of 5701 W. From the Front

Wyndham odds and ends by carol brooKs FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com

• 2022 Wyndham champion Joo-hyung Kim nicknamed himself “Tom” after his love for Thomas the Tank Engine as a child. His second choice would have been Buzz Lightyear from “Toy Story.” • Three-time champion Davis Love III made his 25th appearance in this year’s Wyndham Championship, but missed the cut. He has the third-most appearances in tourney history behind Sam Snead, an eight-time winner, who made 34 starts and Fuzzy Zoeller, who has 26 starts. • 2011 champion Webb Simpson withdrew Friday during the weather delay, knowing he would not make the cut. • Of the six golfers in

the playoff last year, only Adam Scott and Si Woo Kim made the cut. Winner Kevin Kisner withdrew after the second round and did not make the cut, nor did Roger Sloan. Branden Grace and Kevin Na did not play this year. • Will Zalatoris was the highest ranked player in the field at No. 14 in the Official World Golf Rankings. He fired his caddy after the second round. He placed second in the 2021 Masters and 2022 PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Wake Forest University alumnus Zalatoris played Sedgefield several times in the American Junior Golf Association. • Chapel Hill resident Ben Griffin, who plays on the Korn Ferry Tour, finished fourth at 14 under par. • Alex Smalley, a mem-

ber at Sedgefield, finished tied for 13 at minus 10. • The total purse at the Wyndham Championship this year was $7.3 million, rising to $7.6 million next year. • Next year the PGA Tour will reduce the size of the playoff field from 125 to 70. That means the 2023 Wyndham Championship, the final regularseason event, will be more important as the last chance for players to make it into the playoffs. • In recognition of his contribution to golf both as a player and announcer, Sir Nick Faldo was honored with a plaque on the wall of champions behind the ninth hole. Faldo’s first PGA Tour event was in 1979 at the Greater Greensboro Open and this was his final event in the broadcast booth.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT might say hello, and Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha. “We are not a franchise business,” said co-owner Shiva Bista. “We use organic food when available and everything is made fresh when ordered.” Executive chef Janak Oli is assisted in the kitchen by Lekhnath Oli and Lal Oli, who also helps serve. Prashraya Neupane works as a host and waiter for the restaurant. The menu offers food to suit every taste bud from mild to spicy and in between. Protein dishes include chicken, lamb, goat and seafood, but there are plenty of vegetarian options and unique desserts to tempt the palate.

Bista and the other coowners were pleased to find the former restaurant, which had served Mexican fare after Penny’s closed and needed minimum customization in order to open. “We thought the location between High Point University and Guilford Technical Community College was a good place to be,” Bista said. “The park that is close can also help draw customers. There is no other restaurant like it anywhere nearby.” Bista understands business. He managed a franchise sub restaurant in the north before moving to this area to handle gas stations. He is especially happy, however, to be a part of Nasmaste Lumbini.

LINEBERRY -Since 1919

“I enjoy restaurant work so much more because of the interaction with customers,” he acknowledged. “We like to hear from our customers and get their reviews. In the future we hope to open Namaste Lumbini at other locations.” The Namaste Lumbini Restaurant & Bar in Jamestown is open seven days a week from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. A full menu for the restaurant can be found at its website www. namastelumbininc.com. If you are not able to come to the restaurant you can still enjoy its food. Uber Eats, Grubhub and Doordash will bring the food to you.

Watermelon, Family-style by donna ericKson DONNA'S DAY

It has been a watermelon summer! The luscious, juicy treat has made a regular appearance in our soups, salads, grilled sides, as well as sliced up on large platters for the perfect al fresco big-crowd dessert. Summer days are going by too quickly, so grab a fresh melon today and let it quench your thirst, satisfy your sweet tooth and provide lots of “good-for-you” vitamins, like A, B-6 and C. Here are some creative ideas for serving local watermelon during this peak season: WATERMELON CHECKERBOARD SALAD (For 2 servings) 10 chunks of ripe watermelon and 8 chunks of ripe honeydew melon cut into 3/4-inch cubes 1/4 cup feta cheese 2 fresh mint leaves chopped 2 basil leaves chopped (optional) Olive oil and white balsamic vinegar, or your favorite vinaigrette dressing

CONTINUED FROM FRONT tion, including orienting the garage bay doors toward West Gate City Boulevard, no access from Anson Road, addition of a minimum 6-foot high fence or wall between the parking lot and the adjacent residential property at 5705 Anson Road, installation of an evergreen landscape buffer adjacent to the Anson Road residence, a vegetative buffer between the buildings and parking areas and Anson Road, and, finally, business hours for the tire company to be between 8 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Three additional conditions were added by the applicant prior to the Council’s vote, namely, to prohibit convenience stores with gas pumps, sexually-oriented businesses, and funeral homes and crematoriums. The property is across the street from Adams Farm Shopping Center. The site is

at the corner of Anson Road and is considered to be on the edge of the Sedgefield community. Although no one spoke during the public hearing session, it is believed Sedgefield residents were not happy with the rezoning. Councilmember Tammi Thurm praised the applicant and its land use attorney, Marc Isaacson, for working closely with the neighbors and adding extra conditions to the original application. “This is definitely the kind of partnership we like having come into our community,” Thurm said. Mavis Discount Tire has several locations in the High Point/Greensboro area. It specializes in tires, brakes, alignment, shocks, struts, oil change, batteries and state inspections.
