Candidates attend information session All candidates for public office in Jamestown – including incumbents – are theoretically now on the same page as to their knowledge of how the Town operates following a two-hour Candidate Information Session on Aug. 2. This was the first time the Town had offered such an event and all present were treated as candidates for office, not as someone already in office, and new as well as sitting candidates were in staggered seating. All staff and department heads reported, as did the town clerk, town attorney, fire department chief and sheriff’s office captain. To keep newcomers in the loop, Dave Treme, interim town manager announced

from now until the election, all candidates would be advised on events regarding the Town. Any questions and answers will be forwarded to the all candidates, not just councilmembers. “I thought [the session] was very helpful and really appreciate everyone taking the time out of their evening to share this information with us,” said Darren Myers, Council candidate. “There are so many things that the town’s staff does that I personally don’t regularly think about or overlook as I go about a normal day. It was also nice to be able to put names and faces together.” “I learned how tough both staff and council members think the Council’s job is, particularly surrounding the votes and decisions council make,” said Robert Fredsee session, page 2

Council undergoes visioning exercises By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com When is a Town Council meeting not a Town Council meeting? When it’s a special meeting with no legislation but, rather, one to clarify the mission, vision and values of the town. On July 15, the Jamestown Town Council, along with staff, met in such a meeting. Led by Warren Miller of meeting planning company FountainWorks, the Council spent three hours creating vision boards, determining themes prevalent in the town, discussing what made the keeps a lot of the crazitown special, and imaginness out but also stunts us ing where they see Jamesa little bit,” said Straughn. town in 2030. Food hobby leads to business endeavor By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com When Gary Boyles decided to try duplicating the tartar sauce from one of his favorite local seafood restaurants, little did he know it would lead to a unique business endeavor. But that is exactly what happened. “I kept experimenting to get the flavor right and ended up with a product that was totally different but good,” Boyles said. “I gave it to family members and friends and found out they were using it on their sandwiches, hamburgers, tacos and pizza in place of mayonnaise. People kept telling me I ought to sell it, but I felt I could never charge money for it. “After a while I told my friends my hobby was getting expensive. I knew I had to stop making it or start to charge.”

Selling his product became a series of miracles, according to Boyles. After moving to Caswell County, he looked up grocery stores in the phone book and bravely approached the owner of Steve’s Garden Market to introduce his dip and asked if the store would sell it. Steve requested 500 cartons of Boyles’ special dip for an upcoming anniversary sale. “I was used to making two or three cups at a time,” Boyles said with a smile. “Using my recipe, my whole family helped make what we needed and to my surprise, it all sold.” Boyles was still hesitant about starting a new business. He had owned a hardware store in Greensboro for 27 years and after selling it in 1994 was looking forward to sitting on the porch of his log cabin with his dogs. However, an invitation by a pastor to see food, page 6

Council plans short August meeting By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com There will be no new business discussed at the Aug. 17 Jamestown Town Council meeting, according to agenda. Several items of business postponed from the July meeting are scheduled to be heard in August, namely the consideration of approval of an amendment to the Interlocal Agreement with Guilford County regarding funding for the Jamestown Public Library as well as approval of the Interlocal Agreement with Guilford

County for the Animal Shelter and control services. Another item continued from July is discussion about a Non-Profit Contract with the Historic Jamestown Society and funding for services. Katherine Stamey will be recognized for her work on the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee. The Council will meet in the Civic Center at 6 p.m. and the public is invited to attend, as of this writing. With Covid 19 Delta variant cases on the rise, however, the public may safely watch the meeting live at www. youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC.

Jim Herman took home the Sam Snead trophy after his victory at the 2020 Wyndham Championship.

Herman relished opportunity to defend at Sedgefield By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The 82nd Wyndham Championship is only one week away and preparations are in the final stages. Jim Herman, last year’s champion, is preparing to return as well. Herman, 43, was below everyone’s radar at the start of the 2020 tournament. He barely made the Friday cut, but a career-low round of 61 in the third round, followed by a 63 in the final round, put him in a tie for the lowest weekend score by a winner in PGA Tour history. With the victory, he jumped from 192nd to 54th in the race for the 125 playoff spots, earning his way into the FedExCup Playoffs. He advanced to the BMW Championship and finished the season with 64 FedExCup points. He hopes to do as well

this year. His current FedEx Cup rank was projected at 171 as of this writing so a good showing again this year is needed to make the playoffs. Herman spoke to media via Zoom on July 25. “I love Sedgefield,” Herman said. “I’ve had some good success there. Rather than a driver, he said he uses a 3-wood on many holes. He first played the tournament in 2011, when he tied for 59th, his worst result on the course, other than being cut in 2014. The year 2013 saw him tied for 11 and he tied for 18th in 2015. He spoke about playing the Bermuda rough in the South in August. “You have to get in the fairway. You’re just playing for par if you drive it into the rough,” Herman said. “There are certain holes, 10 see defend, page 2

and 11, where you need to be in the fairway, that are tough for me. [Bermuda] is so wiry, it’s unpredictable. Sometimes we guess right and sometimes we look foolish.” He’s looking forward to having fans back this year at the Wyndham. “You get instant gratification on shots, a thumbs-up. That was the biggest thing [last year] coming into 18. It was into the setting sun and we didn’t have the grandstands blocking it.” His FedEx rankings last year were so low that he felt no pressure during the tournament, thinking he had nothing to lose. But as defending champion, he believes he will feel added pressure.

Herman is a friend of former President Donald Trump. “[He is] one of my biggest fans,” Herman said last year. “Whenever I play with him, I usually have some good finishes. [My] last two wins, I had played with him either the week or two weeks before. Maybe three weeks is still within the reach of his, I guess, little bit of good luck for me.” The Wyndham Championship is Aug. 12-15 at Sedgefield Country Club.

Covid Update

Tickets

With the surge of Covid-19 cases and the Delta variant, the PGA Tour has updated its mask policies. Unvaccinated individuals should wear masks in crowded outdoor areas. Fully-vaccinated people are not required to wear masks outdoors but masks are preferred in crowds such as around tees and greens. Masks are required for everyone in any indoor or fully-enclosed space, including, but not limited to: the clubhouse and other permanent structures; fully-enclosed structures/venues including hospitality, merchandise and concessions; and buses, shuttles and other transportation. Social distancing is advised. Hand sanitizer will be available at stations around the course.

Fans wanting to attend must purchase a digital ticket in advance. No tickets will be sold on site. Your phone is your ticket and entry to the tournament grounds will be contactless, which will help everyone move through the gate more quickly. Do not print out your ticket and screenshots are not valid. To purchase your tickets, visit wyndhamchampionship.com/spectators/tickets. Free admission is offered to youth 15 and under, Piedmont Triad teachers, first responders, current military and veterans. A current identification card is required to receive a complimentary admission wristband for themselves and a guest. Members of the military (active duty, reservists and veterans) may receive up to two complimentary tickets for any one day of the tournament. Tickets can only be claimed at VetTix.org.

here,” offered Mayor Lynn Montgomery, noting the possibility of loft apartments, elegant dining and meeting spaces. “(These are) things we can build on that will offer new options that will fit in with what we have.” The Council did not want the town to be forgotten and buildings torn down from disuse or to make way for more modern styles. Socalled big box stores and chains are not what the Council foresees for 2030. “We should retain the small, independent business,” Wolfe said. The Council then set their sights on crafting a vision statement. They divided into two groups to come up with a concept, then learned that each group had the same basic vision: “A thriving community with strong roots in our history. One dedicated to a high quality of life for residents of all ages, including recreation, education and supporting businesses. A community of clean, beautiful and safe surroundings and welcoming neighborhoods where everyone can feel at home.”

Setting a mission statement was next to determine why they had the vision. “A mission is, “this is what we do” and “this is how we do it. It is about why we exist,” Miller said. “Organizations that are clear on their “why” are successful. It’s why you exist as a town. Why the government exists.” Several very brief mission statement ideas came out of the meeting and brief was what Miller was looking for. “Home,” said Rayborn. “Community,” said Montgomery. “To serve our citizens and make it a great place to live,” said Wolfe. Miller then combined responses into a working draft: “Providing highquality services that anticipate the needs of citizens to make Jamestown a safe and welcoming community.” Determining the values, or best assets, of the town was next on the agenda. Several participants noted they hear stories from residents about how well the staff works for the citizens. “This is a team of servant leaders,” said Interim Man-

ager Dave Treme. “It’s a sense of ownership,” Capes said. Town planner Anna Hawryluk remarked the staff love their work and that one of the sanitation workers often hands out toys to the children. “[That’s having] joy in your work,” Miller said. “If you like what you do, you’ll do it well,” Straughn said. Other values adjectives included fairness, consistency, compassion, accountability, stable, reliable, listening, open-mindedness, making a positive difference, enthusiasm, passion and integrity. “We’re able to do this because we’re small,” Straughn said. The vision and mission statements still have some fine-tuning ahead of them. Having the Council go through the exercises was a method of bringing them closer together as a governing body, a method of being on the same page. As it turns out, it appears the mayor and councilmembers were more unified in their visioning than expected.

year,” said current Councilmember Rebecca Rayborn. “Although the information wasn’t new to me, having it all presented in one session by the people in charge of each department was a good reminder of what capable and high-quality staff members we have – both town employees and those with whom we have contracts.” “I do wish that each challenger could spend a ‘day in the life’ with different departments and local leaders for a better understanding that there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes than just a 2-3 hour meeting once a month where issues are presented to the Council and then they vote on it,”

Capes said. “That doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what we do. “I hope that community members will watch the session on the town’s YouTube channel [www.youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC] because it really is a great primer on how town government works,” Rayborn said. Mayoral candidates Frederick and Michael Young were unable to attend the information session but, like the public, had the opportunity to view it on YouTube. Young and Council candidates Dave Cohen and Al Stewart, as well as Mayor Lynn Montgomery did not comment on the session.

session

continued from front erick, mayoral candidate. “I believe members of the public are hard on council members when the reasoning for Council’s decisions is not clear, or when a Council’s decision appears to be uninformed by the thoughts and opinions of the public. “With improved transparency and restructured public hearings, members of the public would have easier access to government information.” Even sitting councilmembers gleaned information from the meeting. “I didn’t realize until I sat through the meeting how useful the session would have been for me personally when I first ran,” said current Councilmember John Capes. “I hope the challengers take the time to go through the packet that was provided because it lays the framework of our local government quite well. Regardless of if I am re-elected or not, it is my sincere hope that this information session provid-

ed insight on some level to everyone involved. There is a lot of work that lies ahead in the next term and should any of the challengers win, they will not have the luxury of a honeymoon period to learn the job. “It is important that the challengers are armed with a better understanding of how our town runs. I applaud the Town Manager, staff and all of the department heads for making this happen.” “I did think it was helpful and important,” current Councilmember Lawrence Straughn said. “In the past, there have been candidates that have made comments about certain procedures within Jamestown’s government operations which were uninformed. Now each of the candidates are on a level playing field with current information. “The new candidates who haven’t attended meetings or didn’t know where to find information now have been personally presented their

keys to Jamestown’s vault of knowledge, which I would add, has always been open to anyone who wanted to look.” “The Candidate Information Session was very helpful,” said current Councilmember Martha Wolfe. “This was a great opportunity to meet each other and for all the candidates to receive the same information at the same time. It is always great to have a refresher session on Municipal Government. “I was extremely pleased with the information session sponsored by the town staff and associated contractors,” offered current Mayor Lynn Montgomery. “The information they shared will benefit all candidates and citizens who watch the video.” Each candidate received a packet of 360 pages of information outlining how the Town operates, rules of procedure, initiatives, Strategic Plan, finance, golf course and parks, legal representation, and how the Town works with public services

Strange But True By lUCie winBoRne ∙ In a practice called sexual death feigning, female dragonflies play dead to avoid sex. Why? A scientist at the University of Zurich observed that, when faced with aggressive males, female moorland hawker dragonflies will freeze in mid-air, fall to the ground and lie motionless in an attempt to avoid injury and sometimes even death that can result from being coerced into mating. Dorm drama, new friendships and life away from home were typical storylines, but the show often tackled relevant social issues from race relations to date assault and homelessness. With a smartly written script and a range of likable characters, the cast included future Academy Award-winner Marisa Tomei, a teenaged Jada Pinkett and Kadeem Hardison. attend his church in Burlington changed the course of Boyles’ retirement plans. The pastor told Boyles his face would be in grocery stores – that he must pursue selling his dip because it had been prophesized. “When I objected that I did not have a state approved kitchen he offered to let me use the church kitchen,” Boyles said. “My wife’s cousin works for a food service and donated the equipment I needed, but I still did not want to do it.” Boyles’ next excuse was he did not have labels for his product and they cost a lot of money. The cousin’s neighbor offered to design a label, all he needed was a picture of Boyles. Boyles did not want his name or his picture associ-

Grilled chicken slathered with Alabama White Sauce 3. Let the chicken come to room temperature while you preheat the grill to medium-high (approximately 400 F). Prepare the grill for indirect heat by either turning off burners on one side or moving coals to one side. 4. Place chicken on the grill, skin side down, over the indirect heat area. Baste the underside with the white sauce. Cook for 7 to 10 minutes, then turn the chicken and baste the skin side. Continue turning and basting until the chicken registers 160 F using your meat thermometer. The temperature will continue to rise as it rests. 5. Tent chicken for 10 minutes before serving. Any sauce that has been contaminated by raw meat should be discarded. Serve extra sauce on the side.

There’s nothing more satisfying than having people rave about your barbeque and being able to tell them you made the sauce from scratch. Sharing good food with the people you love is precious. As the late chef and author Anthony Bourdain said, “Barbeque may not be the road to world peace, but it’s a start.” Let’s walk this road together with extra napkins. Bon appetit, friends.

continued from front ated with the dip, but his grandchildren convinced him people would relate to that. “We were gathered around the computer when the proof came and it looked so good, we all cried,” Boyles said. “I told my wife Snow that I was not the most religious person, but I thought God was trying to tell us something.” Encouraged by his wife, Brother Gary’s Dip became official and the pastor’s prediction that Boyles’ face would be seen in grocery stores was fulfilled. “From the very first carton, it has been a blessing to everyone, especial to the stores who sold it,” Boyles noted. “I took the road less traveled and put it into Mom & Pop stores. I wanted to

keep it fun as a hobby. I was the only employee and that is how I wanted it.” Boyles was selling two types of dip, plain and mild jalapeno, when Sam Ammons, the owner of Town & Country Grocery Store on Vandalia Road in Greensboro, asked if he could design a line of pimento cheeses. Boyles spent several months of trial and error perfecting a cheese product with a certain, look, aroma, color, taste and texture. “The next thing I know I had 43 stores and was turning down big grocery chains,” Boyles said. “Groupon wanted to take it nationwide. But I was still working in the church kitchen and everything was made by hand. Although I had hired

former prisoners and veterans, there was no way to fill that many orders. “This was a ministry for me. It is great to be part of something that is not about you. To this day, I am just trying to be a good steward of the business until I can pass it on.” Another miracle for Boyles was meeting Sarah Van Dyke, owner of Produce Box, who bought and sold produce, using housewives to make deliveries like a paper route. They began selling his dips and cheeses and told Boyles he had a large fan base. Van Dyke is the one who encouraged him to make vegan products. “But the way I was doing business was hard and I was thinking about quitting,” Boyles said. After 13 years, I cut back to supplying seven stores.” Even with only seven stores, sales continued to climb and Boyles found he had outgrown the church kitchen. He discussed a business plan that involved changing locations and adding computer sales with his grand-

son, Carter Boyles. Carter decided to quit college and focus on his grandfather’s business. At the time Carter was working toward degrees in music industry and business studies. “Growing up I always wanted to be like my grandfather,” Carter said. “Pawpaw was a well-known drummer and all us boys wanted to be the type of musician he was. “But my aunt had just passed away and I knew my family needed me. I prayed about it and God said to listen to my heart. I think it is a blessing to work with Pawpaw. He has been my best friend ever since I was a kid. I had helped him in the church kitchen since I was 12.” About a month ago, Boyles and Carter moved the business to 4809 W. Gate City Boulevard in Greensboro, a building Boyles already owned. It enables them to handle walk-in customers as well as online sales. Brother Gary’s Gourmet Dips & Pimento Cheeses now lists 18 products in their brochure including vegan and non-dairy options.

“I am not a chef or a cook and have always felt inadequate in this business,” Boyles said. “But when people taste the product, they are sold on it. It is something they cannot get anywhere else. Millions of people will never taste my stuff, but the ones who do will remember it. “Now, I am learning to let go and let Carter have his vision for the business. He can see the future clearer than I can.” “I know we have a good product and you can do anything you believe in,” Carter said. “If you have a dream you can do it.” Boyles’ dream has shifted just a bit, however. “I want to build a house one day for a wounded warrior and his family. That is a lot of pimento cheese to sell.” Brother Gary’s Gourmet Dips & Pimento Cheeses is open Wednesday from 12-4 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 12-6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. To learn more about the business look for it at www. brothergraysdips.com or call 336-763-0735.
